DID YOU KNOW? Men and women often make an effort to lose weight before special events such as weddings or vacations. While many people do so in healthy ways, others take their weight loss efforts to the extreme. For example, many brides-to-be aspire to shed excess weight before their weddings so they can look as slim as possibly in their wedding gowns. The New York Times even reported in 2012 on a bride who spent eight days on a feeding tube to strictly limit calories so she could fit into her wedding dress. Such efforts are dangerous and could put individuals’ long-term health in serious jeopardy. Healthy weight loss for any occasion requires a long lead time, so that individuals can safely shed between one and two pounds per week with a healthy mix of diet and exercise, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Trimming between 500 and 1,000 calories per day from their diets can help individuals lose weight safely.

Flesh-Eating Bacteria Is a Rare Condition
Convenient Brighton location 200 White Spruce Blvd • Suite 128 • Rochester
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: What do you know about flesh-eating bacteria? After going to a hospital to get a mole checked, I developed an itchy rash that won’t go away. I am worried. -- H.W. ANSWER: Let me reassure you that this isn’t flesh-eating bacteria. Itchy rash around a mole can be due to eczema, or it might be a fungal infection or one of several other benign skin conditions. A dermatologist can help figure out which. But, since you asked ... The term “flesh-eating bacteria” is misleading since it’s a disease, not a particular bacteria species. The term refers to a condition called “necrotizing fasciitis” (“necrotizing” means that the infection kills cells, and “fasciitis” references the connective tissue in the body that the infection proceeds along). However terrifying, it is fortunately a rare condition. There are only about 1-3 cases per 100,000 people. It may occur in people who are otherwise healthy and who happen to get an injury that penetrates the skin. But it is more common in people who have a diminished immune system due to chronic illness (diabetes, kidney or liver disease, cancer, heavy alcohol use). In most cases, in people with chronic disease, it is a combination of bacteria that cause the infection. In previously healthy people, the bacteria most associated are group A streptococcus. This bacteria strain has enzymes that damage the body and has the ability to evade the immune system. It can grow very rapidly, and early treatment is paramount to stopping the infection before permanent damage is done. In some cases, amputation is necessary; in others, no treatment is effective. The disease has a high mortality rate. The particular bacteria in a person with this diagnosis are very dangerous, and there are cases of person-to-person transmission of the bacteria, leading to additional cases, so caregivers and family need personal protective equipment. Effective treatment starts with recognition of the diagnosis. That can be hard; initial signs, such as redness, swelling and fever, can be nonspecific. Skin lesions, like blisters or bruising, can be misleading. However, a very high fever and more pain than expected are big clues to the diagnosis. Treatment is primarily surgical. Antibiotics alone are ineffective.

***
DEAR DR. ROACH: A recent column on sinusitis argued against routine antibiotics. Your advice, while sound, does not apply to all of us. I am an MDS patient with compromised immunity. When I get sick, it takes three times as long to recover. I feel the rules may apply to “normal” people, but not all of us. What would you recommend for someone like me? -- B.F. ANSWER: My answers certainly do not apply to all situations, and immunocompromised individuals are an excellent example. In the case of sinus infections, it depends on the person’s exact type of immune problem. Immunocompromised individuals certainly are more likely to be prescribed antibiotics, and are more likely to be subject to diagnostic testing when things don’t go as expected. Some kinds of immune system disease predispose people to unusual infections, which require specific treatments. Taking care of anyone requires judgment and experience, and physicians who have known their patients a long time are in a better position to judge who needs antibiotic treatment for sinus infection and who does well with supportive treatment. In the case of someone with immune system disease, that is even more important. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Try using that Aries charm to warm up the usual set of workplace naysayers, and then back it up with a solid block of facts and figures to sell your idea to your colleagues. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) While nothing can deter a determined Bovine from following a course you believe in, it helps to have some supporting data and statements by trusted colleagues to make your case. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Take advantage of new information that could help make your career transition easier. The weekend is a good time to re-establish relationships with people you haven’t seen in a while. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Personal matters demand your attention as oncestable situations begin to shift. Quick action to shore things up is called for in order to avoid more problems down the line. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Although your financial picture begins to brighten, “thrift” and “caution” are still the watchwords for fiscally astute Leos and Leonas to live by. Expect news about a family matter. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Before you try to blame a colleague for a workplace problem, make sure you have the proof to back you up. Make some quiet inquiries on your own to try to solicit more information. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Trying to cheer up a depressed friend or downcast family member can be difficult. But keep at it, and your efforts should soon pay off in ways you might have never expected. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Taking a new look at an old and frequently recurring problem might lead you to consider making some surprising changes in the way you had been handling it up till now. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Despite what the naysayers might say, setting your sights on a new goal could be one of the smartest things the typically sagacious Sagittarian has done in a long time. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Rebuilding an unraveling relationship won’t be easy. But you can do it, if you really want to. Just remember to keep the lines of communication open between the two of you. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A new friendship could develop into a close relationship. Meanwhile, reassure an old friend who might be feeling neglected that he or she is still an important part of your life. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You might be feeling that you’re still in over your head as you continue trying to adjust to your new situation. But the pressures ease by week’s end, giving you time to come up for air. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a gift for sensing the feelings of others. You might consider a career in some aspect of counseling.

Start off on solid financial footing. It’s important that homeowners who want to upgrade their homes enter the home improvement process with a realistic grasp of their finances. Many home improvement projects stall when homeowners run out of money. Homeowners can avoid such unfortunate situations by only beginning a project they know they can afford. Whether funding a project with a loan or savings or a combination of both, homeowners should make an honest assessment of what they can afford to commit to a given project. If the amount of money available does not add up to the estimated cost of the project, delay the project now or you might be facing a stalled project down the road.

PROBLEMS THAT CAN LEAD TO LAWN DAMAGE Foot traffic: Lawns can take a pounding from foot traffic, leading to compaction and spots of dead lawn. Try to redirect the traffic elsewhere to give worn down areas a break. Aeration can relieve soil compaction. If a certain area has become the de facto pathway, install a paver, gravel or concrete walkway in that spot.
Wear solid shoes that provide considerable traction during home improvements. A firm, reinforced toe is helpful as well. Should any items fall, they’ll be less likely to cause injury if your foot is encased in a protective boot or sturdy shoe. Soles that grip surfaces will help safeguard against slips and falls.

MILLWORK CAN ADD APPEAL & A CLASSIC FEEL Homeowners are discovering that architectural accents can go a long way toward improving both the look and value of their homes. When renovating a space, the term “millwork” may be mentioned by designers and contractors. While it might be a mystery to some, millwork can give rooms unique looks. Millwork refers to items traditionally made from raw lumber in a sawmill. Examples of millwork include crown molding, base trims, door frames, window casings, chair rails, and paneling. Cabinets may also classify as millwork.

When deciding how much to prune, less is usually more. All pruning can put some level of stress on the tree and increase its vulnerability to disease and insect infestation. A good rule of thumb is to never prune more than 25 percent of the crown. According to experts at TreeHelp.com, living branches should comprise at least two-thirds the height of the tree. In some instances, the rules may need to be bent if trees are interfering with utility lines or to meet community laws. However, always prune minimally to avoid damaging the tree.

I waited and passed legally, and when I did, what did she do, she sped up. I barely got passed her and had to jerk over due to running out of passing lane as I reached the crest of the hill. I couldn’t slow and get back behind her because the truck then tailgated her. Why isn’t this a criminal act? It appeared to be intentional on both their parts. I now have a dash cam and will take it to the police station if need be. Funny, after I got over, she turned left. Kudos to Joanna Aguglia, St. Christopher’s Church, and Gates To Recovery. An open panel presentation/discussion was brought to our Church on May 20th. The topics were drug addiction, suicide/overdose statistics,
toxic vaping and how Gates To Recovery is there to help, 24/7. Over 75 people attended, and it was open to the public, very informative. The epidemics are real Stigmas must be erased in order for us and our loved ones to be understood and respected. These concerning issues are very, very active in our communities. Thank you again for taking time to do this for our local residents.

To the person who cried censorship because a local movie theater isn’t showing a certain movie: If a government official prevents a movie from being shown, that is censorship. Movie theaters, however, can and do refuse to show movies all the time. It’s how private business works. A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On June 2, 1924, with Congress’ passage of the Indian Citizenship Act, the United States confers citizenship on all Native Americans born within its territorial limits. Before the Civil War, citizenship was often limited to Native Americans of one-half or less Indian blood. * On May 31, 1930, actor Clint Eastwood, best known for his role as San Francisco Police Inspector “Dirty” Harry Callahan, is born in California. Eastwood got his start playing Rowdy Yates in the popular TV Western series “Rawhide.”

Five Tips For Financial Stability In Retirement Years (NAPS)—Most people have a vision of their golden years that includes a comfortable retirement in which they can spend their time doing the things they enjoy. That dream doesn’t require a substantial amount of wealth, but it is a lot more attainable if you have some financial stability. Unfortunately, just 17 percent of older Americans are “financially healthy” and four in five low- and moderate-income Americans over the age of 50 are struggling with at least some aspect of their financial lives, according to a 2019 study funded by AARP Foundation. Here are five tips for increasing financial stability during your retirement years: 1. Stay out of debt. Debt can be destabilizing because it robs seniors of some of their free cash flow and reduces the amount of money they can spend each month. Credit card spending is especially dangerous for retirees, so consider a pay-as-you-go habit for new purchases. 2. Be a smart investor. Whether you have a small retirement savings or a large investment portfolio, a diversified low-cost investment strategy can deliver additional income for spending and help you stay ahead of inflation. Choose a mix of stocks, bonds and cash that helps you sleep soundly at night, according to The Vanguard Group. 3. Consider downsizing. Many retirees are hesitant to move out of the home where they raised their children, which is understandable for both emotional and practical reasons. But it might improve your financial stability to sell your current home and buy a less expensive one for retirement, pocketing the difference and investing it wisely. 4. Delay Social Security. For retirees who have not yet signed up to collect their Social Security benefits, it may be advisable to delay that start date as long as possible. This may sound counterintuitive if you are searching for financial stability, but research has found that most seniors will benefit from the higher payouts they will receive by deferring to age 70, if possible. 5. Increase cash flow. One way to raise the amount of cash available for funding your retirement is to work part-time, an option that is more available to seniors than ever before. Another possibility is to unlock cash tied up in assets that you might not even realize can be sold. For example, a life insurance policy is considered your personal property and—as such— you have the right to sell that policy anytime you like. When a consumer sells a policy in a “life settlement” transaction, the policy owner gets a cash payment and the purchaser of the policy assumes all future premium payments, then receives the death benefit when the original policyholder passes away. Candidates for life settlements are typically aged 70 years or older, with a life insurance policy that has a death benefit of at least $100,000. A comfortable retirement is possible without an enormous nest egg, but it is very difficult without at least some degree of financial stability. By staying out of debt, practicing smart personal finance and maximizing cash flow, the vision you had of your golden years could be within reach.

The Cornerstone Market of Honeoye Celebrates Five Years By Amanda Dudek
O
n Saturday, May 25th, The Cornerstone Market in Honeoye hosted festivities in honor of five-year anniversary. Established in 2014 by husband and wife Alysha and Ian Baier along with their friend and partner, Peggy Jane O’Neill, the Cornerstone Market carries homemade sandwiches, soups, baked goods and other prepared foods as well as a unique assortment of specialty items and beverages, including craft beers, wines and ciders. The celebration reflected these and more. A blue and white striped canopy tent stretched over a stage, tables and chairs stood in the center of the lawn as local bands played for the crowd. Tastings were offered, including wines and mead from Noble Shepherd Craft Brewery. Samples of homemade foods were carried to guests with more available for purchase. Inside, specialty items, homemade foods and a counter laden with robust and attractive baked goods beckoned guests to linger, explore and sample. Owner Alysha Baier remembers when it all began. “The landlord of the building where I had my studio is also invested in several properties in town,” explained Alysha. “He informed me that a storefront would be opening up and asked if we were interested in doing something with it.” Alysha spoke with her husband, Ian, who has a great deal of background in food service. They had some ideas of their own, and decided to involve their friend, Peggy, who was looking to start a similar business at the time. “We all talked it out and decided to do it,” said Alysha. The Cornerstone Market launched as a specialty grocery store and bakery; however, its focus shifted somewhat after the unexpected loss of partner Peggy in March 2015. “Losing Peggy was very hard,” Alysha said. “We lost our friend and partner within our first year.” Peggy was a vegetarian/vegan with Giant Homemade Cupcake special dietary needs, The Cornerstone Market so originally, such foods were the focus of the store. “We still have a lot of those items as well as tofu options,” said Alysha. “We shifted to prepared food and sandwiches, homemade soups and baked goods, craft beers, specialty items and drinks while minimizing the grocery aspect of our business.” “We also try to source as local as we can,” said Alysha. “We have someone local who grows shitake mushrooms for us, for example. We carry The Soap Hag locally-made soaps as well as The Green Heart of the Finger Lakes products.” Beverages have also been a hit. “We carry Harney & Sons Teas of Millerton, NY. They now make CBD teas which have become quite popular. We carry Saranac and Stewarts sodas, both of New York State. We carry craft beers, ciders and wines from such producers as BlackBird Cider Works, 1911 ciders and also Three Heads Brewery who always participates whenever we do a

tasting.” Alysha and Ian are excited about their recently established relationship with Noble Shepherd Craft Brewery, as well. It hasn’t always been easy. “The past five years have been filled with a lot of challenges, especially the loss of Peggy, but they have also been filled with a lot of amazing and beautiful things,” Alysha recalled. “We have made many friends and become a bigger part of our community. That is what it is really all about, not simply making money.” Alysha explained that many in the community have been very supportive, and that even those who have been more reticent have begun to realize that the market offers something positive and unique to the community. Alysha and Ian are continuing to grow The Cornerstone Market. “We would like our business to become a destination,” said Alysha. “I recently incorporated my pottery into the business, transforming one of our kitchens into my own my own pottery studio where people can come and watch me make pottery. We are also planning to work with We have made Birdhouse Brewing when it many friends opens in September.”
and become a Alysha and Ian hope other businesses consider bigger part of locating to Honeoye, as the community. well. “This town has a lot of potential,” shared Alysha. - Alysha Baier “It is growing and developing, and we believe it is going to get there. The town will be going through some renovations to improve vehicular and pedestrian traffic.” Honeoye already has wonderful hiking trails and the Finger Lakes, two of which are close by, attracting cyclists as well as other visitors. Also, Sandy Bottom Park on Honeoye Lake was just renovated and should be a greater draw. “We never expected to make a million dollars,” added Alysha. “We simply want to do what we love and get by.” Have something interesting you’d like to share with our readers? RÉSUMÉ WRITING RULES TO FOLLOW Be brief yet effective A concise design is key. Many recruiters spend little to no time reviewing the hordes of résumés they receive. In fact, automated résumé bots may initially screen the documents to thin the crowd. According to data from the 12th annual Mystery Job Candidate survey by CareerXRoads, the average recruiter spends six seconds looking at a résumé. If a résumé is lengthy or doesn’t attract attention, it will likely be ignored. Stick to a single-page and make sure wording is brief but meaty.
