Yard sales are popular ways to make money and clear homes of unwanted items.
Enjoyable Escape • Buy the right bikes. Take time to research different brands of bicycles and what they offer. Some bikes are ideal for streets or paved trails, while others are better for rustic roads and trails. A qualified bike retailer can help shoppers find the right bike for them and their families, ensuring everyone in the family is riding the right size bike and the one commensurate with their skill level. • Limit the distance. Children won’t be able to put in as many miles as their parents or older
Make for easy browsing Arrange goods for sale into categories and pay attention to presentation. You may generate more sales if items are easy to see and browsing is made easy. Put items you expect to draw the most attention popular near the end of the driveway to entice passers-by. A neat and inviting appearance also may convey that you’ve taken care of your home and your belongings. Play some music and offer light refreshments to create a convivial atmosphere.
Going for a bike ride is one of the best ways for people to exercise in fresh air. Cycling is not only earth-conscious and convenient, but it also is a fun & popular activity that families can enjoy.
siblings. Limit cycling excursions to a reasonable amount of time so youngsters’ health is not compromised. • Focus on fun. Consider what kids will get out of the trip and gear the afternoon around that. Choose a path that circles a scenic lake or leads to an ice cream stand. Make your cycling excursion more of an afternoon out than a marathon biking session. • Take frequent breaks. Little legs may not be able to keep up, and adults will need to
anticipate stopping along the way. • Know the terrain. Stick to routes you have ridden before. Leave the more intense courses that include extreme climbs and dips for those times when kids are not in tow. Stick to lightly trafficked routes, or travel during off-peak hours. Consult with trail guides and read reviews as well. Cycling as a family can be an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon & get some exercise.
STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * If you had to pick a “standard” pencil color, you’d probably think of a yellow-gold shade -- and that’s no accident. When pencils went into mass production in the 1890s, the finest available graphite fillings came from China. Manufacturers wanted everyone to know that they used only the best Chinese graphite, so they painted their pencils yellow, the traditional color of Chinese royalty. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

American Hotel of Lima Celebrates 101 Years BY SCOTT WURTZEL
T
he importance of the American Hotel of Lima is felt immediately when walking up to it; it is almost as though the building refuses to be ignored. Walking into the hotel is almost like walking back in time. From the dining room, to the taproom, and back to the front office, one can feel the amount of care put into the hotel. The front office is a host to many historical items: a pre-civil war desk from 1840, a cash register from 1894, and paintings on the wall gifted to the family in 1908. The hotel is owned and run by Pat Reynolds, who took over from his parents in 1992. The business has continuously operated since 1920 when it was started by Reynold’s grandfather. Last year, in the midst of COVID, the American Hotel celebrated its centennial anniversary. One may wonder what has changed since Pat Reynolds took over nearly 30 years ago. “Quite a bit,” stated Reynolds. “The menu has changed. We do a lot more soups, and we have added a number of items that we didn’t have on the menu before. The clientele is an older crowd compared to people in their 20’s or 30’s.” The American Hotel does have rooms available, but its main focus has been its food. “We came into our own with the soups in the 80’s, when my sister, Rose, joined the crew. Before that, historically, my grandfather served three meals a day, breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Then in the 40’s, we switched to just lunches. Finally, in the 70’s and 80’s, we started serving lunch and dinner.” Since the pandemic started, the American Hotel has still been able to operate. “My favorite thing to tell is that we have been here 101 years, so since 1920, we have seen prohibition, depression, WWI, Spanish flu, WWII, Vietnam, 9/11. We have been through a lot of things, so when COVID hit, we looked American Hotel Owner, at what we needed to do,” Pat Reynolds, stands behind the Reynolds explained. “We desk in his office! basically furloughed our staff, and my sister and I kept it going with takeout service for the first 10 weeks of COVID.” How did the community respond? “We had a lot of support from loyal customers,” said Reynolds. “My favorite story was that the first day we were open for just takeout only, a gentleman came in from the community and bought a hundred-dollar gift certificate. Curiously, we asked him who would be the benefactor of the gift certificate, and he said, “Oh I don’t know yet.” That told me that he basically gave us a hundred dollars to keep us going, whether it’s ever used or not.

The stately American Hotel gives visitors a sense of historic grandeur.
Even to those visiting for the first time, it is apparent how important the hotel is to Lima. “In all modesty, I have been told by others that we are kind of an anchor for the community, an attraction to the community,” Reynolds said. “It’s an important part of the community, and since we have been here so long, it adds a lot to it too. We’ve got a good reputation and have kept it all these years.” Reaching 101 years is no easy accomplishment, so what has kept this business going? “It’s our determination,” Reynolds stated. “My grandfather came over from Ireland in the late 1800’s. He was in New York City for 20 years, working at a restaurant there. He worked his way up to a manager in the kitchen. Then, he came here to Lima and bought the hotel.” “I was born and raised here, so it’s a labor of love,” Reynolds concludes. “Also, I think it’s due to the good work ethic that we all have.” Enjoy this article? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I love my two fluffy cats, “Jake” and “Manny,” even though I am allergic to the dander in their fur. Antihistamines help, but not completely. Would an air purifier help keep the air clear? -Jemma G. in Kansas City, Missouri DEAR JEMMA: An allergy to pet dander can be tough to keep under control -- so much so that some pet owners give up their pets. I’m so glad you’ve kept your family together. Pet dander is generally underneath a dog or cat’s coat, near the skin. They shed fluffy bits of fur almost constantly, and dander is carried off with that fluff. Because dander can be tiny -- 75 microns or smaller, which isn’t visible to the naked eye -- it’s hard to isolate and get rid of. An air purifier may help, but only if it’s the right one to trap dander. Get an air purifier with a HEPA filter -- one that can be changed easily. HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filters trap particles as small as 0.5 microns. Avoid “ionizing” air purifiers as these don’t trap as many dander particles; plus they can be expensive. The size depends on how much of your home you’d like the air purifier to work in; for example, desktop-sized units have a range of less than 200 square feet, which makes them ideal for desks or next to your bed. No single strategy will reduce dander or other allergens. Tackle the issue from multiple angles. Dusting and vacuuming the house frequently can reduce dander, and brushing your cats’ hair daily will reduce extra shedding. If these activities trigger allergies, consider wearing a filter mask and goggles to hopefully reduce the reaction.

Commercial Lab Tests vs Genetic Counseling
200 White Spruce Blvd • Suite 128 • Rochester
Patient Focused • Family Friendly Restorative Dentistry
www.JillNikasDDS.com
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a daughter (almost 31 years) who is concerned about Charcot-MarieTooth syndrome. Her maternal grandmother has been diagnosed with that condition. She is interested in seeking out a genetic test for the condition to learn if she is susceptible. She was referred to a commercial, direct-to-consumer laboratory for the test. How likely is it that a lab test for this specific condition would be accurate? Should she be doing all of this through either a particular type of genetics counselor or her private physician (internist) rather than an independent effort? -- R.C. ANSWER: Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease is the eponym given to a family of hereditary motor sensory neuropathies: diseases that affect the nerves that carry the impulses necessary for movement and sensation. The initial symptoms are most commonly weakness and atrophy in the feet, followed by similar problems in the hands and sensory changes. The diagnosis may be made by EMG testing (electromyography, a needle study of the electrical activity of the muscles), but genetic testing is another way of making the diagnosis. If her grandmother has a known mutation, then genetic testing is likely to give her confirmation of her own status. Commercial genetic testing is certainly available, and probably accurate. However, I would still recommend a visit to a genetic counselor. This may require a referral from her primary-care doctor. The correct test to order, and its interpretation, depends on the exact diagnosis of her grandmother’s condition, since there are many genetic variations of Charcot-Marie-Tooth. It is likely that your daughter will have questions after the test results, and the benefit of having an experienced clinician there to answer them would be invaluable.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Fighting Back Against Rising Food Prices This week I scored a grocery discount of $5.21, plus over $6 in free groceries by using the store coupons. Added to that was $12 in free items I took to the local food bank. All of this is because I signed up for another grocery store’s customer loyalty card. It took a few weeks, but eventually the store’s computer figured out my favorite brands and items I routinely purchased, and turned those into discount coupons. It included free items to get me to sample different brands. And then there’s the food bank donation. It feels good, when you’re only a short step from needing that service yourself, to be able to give to those who have even less. The free items offered by the grocery store coupons can help beef up the supplies they have at the food bank, and in some cases might even be treats for those who can’t afford them. I thought about that when I grabbed the mega oversize candy bar offered with a free coupon: Somebody’s kids might not have had sweets in a very long time. And then there are our own pantries. For so long stores couldn’t get certain items. Once those were in stock again, some of us grabbed several extra, just in case. Now some of those items are once again not in stock, but for the most part they are. And now we have extra in our kitchen cabinets. It’s time to look at expiration dates and consider the reality: Will we really use up four boxes of pasta in the next month before they expire? If not, perhaps they could be donated to the food bank. If grocery prices are going to keep rising and rising, this is one way to fight back. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

PEST CONTROL
If you think that the only way to exercise and burn calories involves gym equipment, think again. Yard work can be just as challenging as a thorough aerobics workout at a nearby fitness club. To reap the greatest benefits, gardeners should use as little motorized machinery as possible. Manual tools will get you moving and can burn a substantial amount of calories. Try to vary positions and alternate which hands you use to reduce strain and get an even workout. Fitness experts say that gardening can improve strength, increase endurance and assist with flexibility. According to a report in the UK publication The Telegraph, clearing a pond or weeding can burn some 300 calories in an hour. Forty-five minutes worth of gardening can burn as many calories as 30 minutes of aerobics.

CONTROL CRABGRASS BEFORE IT APPEARS Crabgrass is a common problem that appears in summer. According to Lowes, crabgrass plants produce thousands of seeds between midsummer and early fall. While the first frosts of late-fall or early winter kill the crabgrass plants, the seeds produced by the plants remain dormant throughout winter and then begin to grow as the ground temperature warms up with the spring and summer thaw. As a result, controlling germination, which is the development of a plant from a seed or spore after a period of dormancy, is the key to preventing crabgrass from becoming an unsightly blemish that can harm your lawn in summer. * “Instead of baking soda, I use three or four charcoal briquettes in a bowl to control odor and moisture in my refrigerator. I place the briquettes in a shallow dish, then cover the top of the bowl with a small piece of cheesecloth and secure it with a fat rubber band. The best thing is that I can still use these briquettes on the grill. In the summer, they get changed very regularly.” -- M.L. in Virginia * To ripen a green tomato, wrap it in a sheet of newspaper or place it in a paper bag. On behalf of his firstborn, purchase a few different gifts - those items that he has been interested in buying but has resisted in favor of saving money for new onesies and burp cloths. S E V RA Thank you! We want to give a huge Thank You to the gentleman who paid for our meals at Jo Andy’s on May 25th. We sincerely appreciate your kindness and will do likewise in the near future. May God bless you for your generosity! What a trip! Last Wednesday evening, I was taking my dog for a walk near my home in Corfu. My dog suddenly pulled me, and I tripped over him to avoid stepping on him. I fell off the curb and into the street, severely breaking both my wrist and elbow. A very kind neighbor, who happened to be a nurse, was driving and saw me fall. She stopped, and after assessing the situation, called 911. Before I knew what was happening, more neighbors were there to help as well as the police and ambulance. Someone even took my dog home for me! It’s all pretty much a blur to me, but thank you so very much to all who came to my rescue!
Not a single thank you In response to a recent person looking for incontinence underwear: I did the best I could with what I no longer needed, and I dropped off perhaps a dozen packages to the site specified by the requester in phone calls, after driving dozens of miles in each direction. Later I called the intermediary who had actually posted the request to confirm that the person in need had received the items. Several calls and emails went out without a word in reply. I particularly urged several times that the ultimate recipient make sure they looked through all the open packages. Why? Because in one of the open packages I left an envelope inside with a $100 bill in it so the ultimate recipient could purchase more underwear. No answers at all. Not a single thank you. What to do? I live in a seniors apartment complex. We have a nosy, busybody who, if she hears something good or bad (but mostly the bad) can’t wait to spread it all over. That wouldn’t be so bad, but most of the time, what she is spreading is not true. She is just a mean and disgusting old biddy. What can be done with someone like this? Debt If you include the unfunded liabilities of medicare and social security, our national debt is over $100 trillion. How bad does it have to get before you agree social security, medicare, and medicaid (the biggest debt drivers) need to go away? Not cut, completely go away. Stop calling it “my social security.” It was never yours to begin with. Your grandparents survived just fine before Medicare/Medicaid. Nowhere in the Declaration of Independence nor the Constitution does it guarantee any standard of living or any length of life. Raising prices! I understand that prices are going up at pretty much every restaurant you go to due to the economy, but can these restaurants please update their websites and let people know about the increase! I ordered a pizza special from a local place. It said one price online, but when I picked it up it was actually $10 more! I’m all about helping out our local businesses, but I wasn’t happy about paying so much more than I thought. I probably would have gone somewhere else had I known.

RÉSUMÉ WRITING RULES TO FOLLOW Be brief yet effective A concise design is key. Many recruiters spend little to no time reviewing the hordes of résumés they receive. In fact, automated résumé bots may initially screen the documents to thin the crowd. According to data from the 12th annual Mystery Job Candidate survey by CareerXRoads, the average recruiter spends six seconds looking at a résumé. If a résumé is lengthy or doesn’t attract attention, it will likely be ignored. Stick to a single-page and make sure wording is brief but meaty.

MAKE MEALTIME MORE ECO-FRIENDLY An eco-friendly lifestyle is anything but selfless, as such a way of life can pay both immediate and long-term dividends, helping men and women in the present day while also contributing to healthier futures for generations to come. As environmentalists and eco-friendly ordinary Joes no doubt already know, there are myriad ways to go green. Even mealtime at home can be made considerably more eco-friendly with relatively little effort. Stop handwashing dishes. Men and women who dread having to hand wash their dishes after a nice meal have an ally in science. A study from researchers in Europe found that people who handwashed place settings for 12 people used as much as 27 gallons of water, while washing the same amount of place settings in a dishwasher required just four gallons of water. So instead of standing over a sink and washing dishes by hand each night, men and women can simply load up the dishwasher, making sure only to run it when it’s full so even less water is wasted. Avoid the stove when possible. Empty nesters, couples without children or single men and women who want to save energy come mealtime can use toaster ovens in lieu of traditional stoves when preparing small meals. According to EnergyStar®, toaster ovens consume between onethird to one-half the amount of energy as conventional electric ovens when cooking small meals, making them a far more eco-friendly option for men and women accustomed who typically cook small meals for one or two people. Shop with reusable shopping bags. Cooks know that great meals begin at the grocery store, so there’s no reason why eco-friendly cooking cannot begin there as well. Estimates suggest that as many as 100 billion plastic bags are used in the United States alone each year. EnvironmentMassachusetts reports that such bags are used for an average of 12 minutes, even though their life expectancy is as high as 1,000 years. By relying on reusable cloth shopping bags instead of single-use plastic bags, shoppers can dramatically reduce the carbon footprint of cooking their own meals. Recycle materials. Glass jars, plastic butter tubs, milk cartons, and other items necessary to prepare meals at home are all recyclable. Many local governments have weekly if not biweekly pickups of recyclable materials, making it easier than ever to ensure these items are given new life after being used. Men and women who reside in areas without such pickups can go it alone, collecting recyclable materials and periodically transporting them to nearby recycling centers. Mealtime provides a host of opportunities for eco-conscious men and women to embrace practices that protect the planet.
