Today’s auto manufac turers understand that maximized cargo space is a feature many buyers w ant in their new vehicles. But even the most spacious car or SUV may not alw ays provide the right amount of space drivers need to haul large items. In such instanc es, roof rac ks are an asset, especially to avid travelers or outdoor enthusiasts. Roof racks benefit travelers and everyday motorists in numerous w ays. Racks make it easy to transport cargo that does not fit the shape or size of a car trunk or cargo area of an SUV. Also, roof racks enable drivers to free up interior space and keep sight lines open, contributing to driver safety. By boosting a vehicle’s storage space, roof racks essentially transform the top of a car or truck into a second trunk. M oving items up and outside of the car can free up additional legroom and give passengers greater comfort on longer trips. Plus, roof racks provide a sturdy surface on w hich to store kayaks, mountain bikes, furniture, surfboards, and more w ithout damaging the paint and finish of the vehicle. Roof racks are sold in a variety of styles and applications. Roof boxes and bags also c an be purchased, if you have items that need to be protected from the elements. M any auto manufacturers offer roof racks as an option on new vehicles, or they can be installed after-market by a qualified professional. W hen purchasing roof racks, drivers should consider their needs and the size of the items they’re most likely to store.
REDUCE DISTRACTIONS BEHIND THE WHEEL Store loose gear and other items that can roll around away from the driver’s seat so you are not tempted to reach for them.

Enjoy dining out w it h k ids Practice : Daniel Post Senning, the great-grandson of etiquette expert Emily Post and co-author of “ Emily Post’s Etiquette, 18th edition,” says parents can practice dining out by replicating the experience (as much as possible) at home. Ask the children to use inside voices and exhibit proper behavior at the dinner table. Remove children from the table if they misbehave and try again another time. Parents also can acclimate their youngsters to dining out by gradually w orking their w ay up to more formal restaurants. Start by dining out at a place w here table behavior or noise may be more tolerable, such as a fast-food restaurant, before moving on to a casual restaurant and then a nicer restaurant w hen kids can handle it.

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM The Purina Pet Care Center found that overweight pets may live two years less than ideal weight pets. Reduced life span is not the only problem, as carrying extra pounds can contribute to various maladies. These include osteoarthritis and poor joint health, type 2 diabetes, ligament injuries, heart and respiratory disease, kidney disease, and cancer.

Hello! My name is
Oliver, Olibear is what I'm usually called by, and I am a very chubby kitty. I am about 7 years old and weigh exactly 13 pounds. My hobbies include eating, sleeping, and slapping up the dogs (when I don't get food). Before I was adopted, I got thrown out of a car window and attacked by other cats. My life now has gotten so much better and I'm glad that I have such loving owners! Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Hometown Hero Banners Rise for 7th Year By Amanda Dudek
S
ome people say life is all about being in the right place at the right time. This was certainly true for Edward (Ed) O’Brien in 2012. He was working on a job in Brockport when he noticed the banners being displayed around the town. These banners, honoring local military heroes, deeply inspired O’Brien, so he reached out to a police officer he knew for the city to ask about them. The officer explained how the Hometown Hero Banners program worked, and O’Brien quickly started his own Hometown Hero Banners program for Honeoye Falls, Lima and Mendon. “I geared it around the school system,” said Ed. “We honor current active service members of the U.S. Military who have graduated from Honeoye Falls-Lima Central School District or whose families reside in Honeoye Falls, Lima or Mendon.” O’Brien decided focus on the young men and women currently serving. Hometown Hero Banners is free to participating families and is funded through donations. “I do it the old-fashioned, hard way,” Ed stated. “I go around knocking on doors, so to speak, but it has been working because I have lasted since 2012!” Families with active military members who either reside in the three local communities or graduated from the school system are eligible to have a banner honoring their loved one displayed in town, starting around Memorial Day and ending around Veteran’s Day each year. “They fill out an application,” Ed explained. “I ask for a reasonable size photograph because I have to enlarge it for that 6’ banner.” O’Brien also negotiated with Honeoye Falls, Lima and Mendon so that it would not impact the town financially. “The towns agreed to put them up around Memorial Day because that is when they take their own banners down and do maintenance on them,” he said. “As the cold weather moves in around Veteran’s Day or so, they take the Hometown Hero Banners down as they put up whatever they like for that season. They all agreed to do it right away.” O’Brien feels this is a way to serve the people and the community for which he cares so much. Having moved to the Rochester area in the 70’s, O’Brien and his family have lived in the Village of Honeoye Falls for nearly 40 years. “We have been here a while,” said Ed. “I prefer the small-town, countrylike setting here.” For a great portion of his life, Ed O’Brien worked as a fire alarm life safety technician. He retired when he suddenly Shaun P. O’Brien, SGT. US Marines received a cancer diagnosis four years ago. “There was no warning sign,” Ed recalled. “It just happened. I am two years into remission now, and I feel good.” However, O’Brien traces his inspiration to bring back Hometown Hero Banners to his own family. “My two sons, Shaun and Kade, joined the Marines in 2004,” Ed said. “They were in Iraq very early, and Kade was stationed at Fallujah which was just a terrible place. At the same time, I joined the Patriot Guard Riders, escorting military funerals on our motorcycles. I think these two things pushed me in to start Hometown Hero Banners here for the younger men and women.”

Sadly, in 2011, Ed O’Brien’s younger son, Kade, was killed in a tragic accident when a vehicle made a left-turn in front of his motorcycle. “Kade is a very big, driving factor in this,” Ed said. “It made a big impact on my life, changed my whole thinking. He survived Fallujah and that horrible situation with people shooting at him, trying to kill him, and he died here when he went out for a motorcycle ride.” O’Brien explained that his wife, Deb Milne-O’Brien, started The Kade Project in their son’s memory. The Kade Project helps gather care package donations and send them to deployed troops, and it also helps people in need locally. “We do not have that big name out there,” added Ed. “We are a little bit more local.” O’Brien’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. “The families generally appreciate it,” Ed shared. “They really like to see their son or daughter being represented in this way.” O’Brien added that every year, people ask after the banners, how they are coming along and when they will be going up. When a hometown hero completes military service, their families receive their - Edward O’Brien, loved one’s banner as a gift from the community. Founder
Families really like to see their sons and daughters being represented in this way.
The banners are catching on in other communities, as well. “We have assisted the communities of Avon, Dansville, Middlesex and Rush in creating similar programs,” Ed said. “People passing through see them and contact me. A lady from a larger Pennsylvania community even contacted me to start one there.” For Ed O’Brien, however, the cause will always be much closer to home. INFLUENTIAL JAZZ MUSICIANS 18
Miles Davis (1926-1991): Compared to other jazz legends, Illinois-born Miles Davis was introduced to music rather late. It wasn’t until Davis was 13 years old that his father introduced him to the trumpet, an introduction that would dramatically alter the course of jazz music. Under the tutelage of local music school director Elwood Buchanan, Davis learned to play the trumpet without vibrato, which Biography.com notes marked a departure from the style of trumpet-playing popular at the time. A true pioneer, Davis is considered one of the most influential figures in the history of jazz and 20th century music.

Hollenhorst plaque. I have a “blue cloud” in the corner of my left eye at all times. My doctors’ only instructions were to notify them of any changes. I am scared. Am I going to have a stroke in the near future? When I asked one of my doctors, he said to “just keep an eye on it.” -- D.D.M. ANSWER: A Hollenhorst plaque is a cholesterol crystal that is seen in the blood vessels of the retina. In most cases, the cholesterol plaque had broken off from the carotid artery, the main blood vessel providing blood to the brain. While I understand your concern about its effect on your stroke risk, it seems to be fairly small -- in one study of 130 patients with Hollenhorst plaques, none of them had a stroke in the two years or so that they were followed in the study. However, all of the patients studied had some degree of blockages in the carotid artery, and your doctor should consider looking for blockages in yours if he hasn’t already. In most cases, carotid blockages are treated with medication, especially a statin medication. Aspirin might be appropriate for some people, but that is a discussion you should be having with an expert, such as your internist or cardiologist. Warfarin should not be used to treat cholesterol plaques. The manufacturers of warfarin recommend stopping warfarin if a cholesterol plaque is found, as warfarin can increase the risk of further events. However, there might be some situations in which anticoagulants must be used, such as in the case of a pulmonary embolism. ***

that the enamel on the back of my upper teeth, especially the front, is wearing away. He asked me if I experience acid reflux. I said I don’t think so, because isn’t that something I’d notice? He then asked if I feel refreshed after waking up from eight hours of sleep. (I’m a new mother, and babies are next-level exhausting.) He said to try an experiment: Take a Pepcid at night and if I start to feel more refreshed, then I’m probably having acid reflux that prevents me from going into deep, refreshing sleep. Do you recommend this? -- H.C. ANSWER: I admire your dentist for noticing the enamel loss and considering the diagnosis of gastroesophageal reflux disease. Dental enamel can be lost in an acid environment, so it’s a reasonable thought. However, it is normally severe acid reflux accompanied by frequent acid taste in the mouth that leads to tooth damage. There certainly are cases of asymptomatic GERD, but I think tooth damage is unlikely without further symptoms. Repeated vomiting, especially in people with a history of an eating disorder, is a much more common cause of enamel loss than GERD, and that may be a possibility. I would not recommend a medication trial because there are no reliable symptoms. (I agree with you that poor sleep in a new mom is not always due to reflux.) If GERD is really a concern, a diagnostic test, such as a 24-hour pH monitor or an endoscopy, would be my preference before considering a long-term course of treatment. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Shopping locally is a great w ay to benefit your community and, in many instances, your bottom line. Shopping locally is especially important w hen the economy is struggling, as smaller businesses are not alw ays as capable of bearing the brunt of a recession as larger ones. A heart felt THANK YOU is not enough to express our gratitude to all of the Avon, East Avon, Lima and Livingston County emergency responders that came to our rescue this past Sat., 6/8 when our van was violently rear ended on Rt. 15 in front of the J & A Farm Human caused climate change is real, and America isn’t leading the way on this issue. Your children and your grandchildren will be picking up the mess or dying for our failures. Address the issue with the ferocity it deserves. Those that are trying to address it are mocked and called extremists. For the love of your children - do better. It is Southern pride and represents American lives lost. Take down the British flag; they are the ones that brought the slaves here, which makes that flag more of a racist flag than mine. This is a free country, and you have no control over anything but yourself. The KKK had no right to use the rebel flag. Try leaving the state once in a while, GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

have been running as strays for the last three weeks. We couldn’t have done it without folks sharing our posts, reporting sightings, and letting us utilize their properties. Both dogs are onto better lives!
Big thanks last week to everyone in the Springwater area who were involved in helping us safely trap two dogs that and you would see that many people from many backgrounds fly that flag. So, stop watching so much TV, read a book once in a while and stop being racist towards me. Someone wrote about computer scam to “clean up your computer”, add antivirus, etc. for $249.99. I fell for that scam too. Well there’s a follow up scam! I was called stating they were going out of business and wanted to refund my money. The catch was they needed my banking info and I had to have at least a few hundred dollars in the account in order for them to deposit my refund. Needless to say, I told them no thanks and blocked them from contacting me again. I know I avoided

Thank you, Dansville Central School! I am thankful for an awesome group of teachers and administrators who have helped my children so much and to the tutor who has helped my child love learning again and who has become a friend. I see how wonderful people can be in Dansville. They come together to help others when they are in need. They throw benefits and show up to help. The good outweighs in many ways, and it is good to see.
having my checking account emptied!! While we are all beyond impressed by your boys’ accolades on the baseball field, I think the taxpayers would appreciate it if you would save your social media postings for when you are off the taxpayers’ dime. I know you don’t own any property or a home, so you don’t know what it feels like to shell out thousands of dollars in property taxes just to see someone posting on social media during working hours. Thanks. It is sad to see so many Americans who don’t know our own history. The Civil War was not started over slavery. (Most Southern farmers did not have slaves.) That came

later for Lincoln to gather support for the war. When cotton and tobacco became big ticket items especially in Europe, some Northerners did not want a piece of it; they wanted the whole thing. Since they had more power in the government, they had oppressive taxes put on the farmers whom they knew they could not pay. They took over the farms by any means necessary, even murder. To make a long story short, the South seceded to get more representation and to protect the farmers and their families. My wife had ancestors on both sides, So, I honor both sides by flying both flags.

TRY A TASTE OF HISPANIC HERITAGE (NAPSI)—National Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to acknowledge the history, culture and contributions of the people of Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America, and Spain. One of the best ways to celebrate, many say, is with food. Making that easy is one restaurant chain that’s having a year-round love affair with Latin and Hispanic cuisine. Long known for its authentic Tex-Mex roots, Church’s Chicken®/Texas Chicken® has spent years championing the commemorative period—which runs from September15 to October 15th—on a global stage. The first Hispanic influence on the company’s menu was the jalapeño pepper—the very first side item ever offered at the restaurant chain. The peppers were added to the menu due to a San Antonio tradition of squeezing their juice over various foods to give them a south-of-theborder style “kick” of heat and spice.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On June 17, 1994, “O.J.” Simpson, a former football player suspected of a double murder, flees along I-405 in Los Angeles in a white Ford Bronco with police in pursuit. News helicopters followed from above, and millions watched on television. Simpson was arrested at home an hour later. * On June 18, 1966, Gen. William Westmoreland, senior U.S. military commander in Vietnam, requests an additional 111,588 troops for the war in 1967, bringing the total to 542,588.
Study Shows Link Between Financial Confidence And Money Talk Why You Should Talk Money With Your Honey (NAPS)—Here’s something to think about the next time you’re with your significant other: money. According to a recent survey by Quicken, maker of personal finance software, dollars and cents can be an important part of your sweet talk. Here are four facts and figures that explain why your table for two should be paired with an open conversation about finances. 1. Talking about money is hard. People report anxiety about the topic and many have a hard time opening up about finances. Nearly a third of survey respondents said that talking about money made them feel anxious and over a quarter said that they avoid checking bank account balances because ignorance is bliss. Another 31 percent said they wished people talked about money less. In fact, the survey revealed that only 43 percent of people tell their partners how much they make.
* On June 19, 1972, the U.S. Supreme Court rules against Curt Flood in Flood v. Kuhn, denying him free agency as a baseball player. He was trying to break the reserve clause that tied players to one team. Three years later an arbitrator ruled in favor of free agency, but it was too late for Flood, who never played baseball again.
2. Talking pays off. People who are most confident in their path to retirement talk about money with their spouse or partner more than any one else in their lives. They even favor chats with their significant other over their financial planners by 20 percent. People who identify as less confident in their path to retirement are 15 percent less likely to talk to their spouse or partner about money matters. 3. Money talk can even be romantic. Over half of millennials say they’ve talked about personal finance on a first date. For Gen X’ers, the number drops by nearly half, and boomers stick to more traditional topics—only 8 percent have talked about money on the first date. 4. Conversations are key. In short, open conversations about your finances—especially with your spouse or partner—are a cornerstone of confidence in your financial future. To help, here are some money talk tips that pair nicely with candlelight: • Don’t avoid the conversation. Discussing and agreeing on spending limits, big purchases, and being equally informed about your finances are vital. • Choose the right time to talk. Try to find a time when you and your partner are more likely to be at your best, rather than when you’re running out the door to work or have just gotten home and may need time to decompress. Many couples have standing monthly dates to review their financial picture together. • Leverage a tool to track your goals together. Using software or apps such as Quicken, provider of the best-selling personal finance software in the U.S., can make setting goals and tracking spending collaborative—and maybe even more enjoyable. Learn More For further facts, tips and insights on taking control of your financial life and liking it, go to www.quicken.com. It makes sense to discuss dollars and cents with your significant other.

ELECTRICAL THE BENEFITS OF BACKYARD KOI PONDS
TIME IS RUNNING OUT!
Koi ponds can make for beautiful additions to backyards or home gardens. While many people are drawn to koi ponds because of their aesthetic appeal, there are many additional reasons for homeowners to consider installing koi ponds in their backyards. Ponds and water gardens can transform yards rather quickly. Ponds can add appeal to otherwise mundane yards and provide eye-catching, relaxing spots to sit and enjoy the scenery. Koi ponds have recently fallen into a favor with homeowners in North America, but these popular water features date back several centuries to Asia. Centuries ago, Chinese rice farmers began keeping carp in their rice paddies, and that practice eventually caught on in Japan. The fish started to breed and form slight color variations. Koi, often referred to as “Nishikigoi,” are actually descendants of the common carp, though the koi of today are more brightly hued and ornamental fish than carp. Koi can become a lowmaintenance family pet. These fish tend to grow accustomed to having people around, and will often interact with visitors at the surface of the water. It’s not unusual to have koi beg for food or take food from a person’s hand. They also may tolerate some light handling. Koi ponds also provide some psychological benefits. The sound of the water can be soothing and relaxing. Sitting by the pond may help alleviate stress, as unwinding next to a pond and watching the fish swim by can help individuals decompress.
IS IT TIME TO UPDATE YOUR HOME’S ELECTRICAL SYSTEM? The invisible systems in a home often are taken for granted. When such systems are working as expected, daily life moves along smoothly. However, when a system goes awry, it can negatively impact routines and may create a dangerous home environment. This is especially true when something goes wrong with a home’s electrical system. Faulty wiring is a leading cause of residential fires. Many homeowners, particularly those who live in older homes, might be living in properties that have outdated electrical systems. The experts at Lowes ProServices state that having old wiring and/or insufficient amperage in a house can endanger residents. It also may damage appliances and make it difficult to sell a property in the future. It can be difficult to gauge exactly when to overhaul an electrical system. Unless circuits routinely trip or lights often dim, homeowners may put off the work. But degrading wires or overextended circuitry can pose a fire risk, so it is best to address electrical systems promptly. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

GENERAL CONTRACTING
PREP-YOUR-PLACE POINTERS (NAPSI)—Many people may be surprised to learn that fall is actually the most affordable season for home prep and repair projects. There’s less demand, so homeowners enjoy breaks on equipment and services. An easy place to begin is at the window. Cracked and warped windows can often cause heat to escape. “Windows that produce a draft or feel cold on the inside should be replaced,” explains Richard Kasunic, a home repair expert with Window Nation, one of the country’s leading window replacement companies. Modern vinyl windows fit tightly to shield homes from wind, water infiltration and inclement weather overall. With that said, many homeowners have older windows and are often “heating the outside,” adds Kasunic. “On average, homeowners spend 40 percent of their utility expense dollars on heating and cooling,” he says. “But if new windows aren’t in this year’s home budget, you might want to pick up insulated curtains, window and door gap seals, and add draft snakes on windowsills.” He also suggests replacing the weather stripping around doors if you see any light around the edges. For less than $10, you can likely reduce electrical bills throughout the year. Beyond windows and doors, exterior outlets, plumbing and utility access, chimneys and walkways should be sealed for unwanted holes, says Kasunic. And homeowners should have their furnaces and roofs professionally cleaned and inspected. Finally, cover the water heater and change the furnace filter so your furnace doesn’t have to work as hard. If you are thinking of new windows, Kasunic agrees that this is the best time for both availability and price. Learn More: For further facts and advice, go to www.windownation.com. WAYS TO MAKE HOMES SAFER
PEST CONTROL
One of the easiest ways to reduce the risk of falls is to improve lighting around the home. The National Institutes of Health state that adequate lighting is important at entrances to the home, stairways, hallways, and other frequently traversed areas. Make sure lighting fixtures are using the highest wattage light bulb allowed. Artificial lighting sources become even more vital in fall and autumn, when natural light is less abundant in a home. In addition, install lighting outdoors by the front door, over the garage and where garbage pails are stored to facilitate safe passage.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A change of season reinvigorates the Lamb, helping to overcome the effects of a recent slower-paced period. This is a good time to restate your feelings for that certain someone. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You might not like using your authority to correct a workplace situation, but that’s what being placed in charge is all about. Besides, you have people ready to lend support if need be. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your creativity continues to run high and helps guide you to make some fine choices in the work you’re doing. Keep the weekend free for those special people in your life. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Don’t be surprised if you experience a sudden spurt of energy strong enough to pull you out of that recent period of indecision and put you back in charge of your own goals. LEO (July 23 to August 22) This is a good time for Leos and Leonas to set new goals regarding health, educational choices and possible career moves. The plans you make now could be a blueprint for your future. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You might have much to offer a potential employer, but it can all be overwhelmed by too many details. Let the facts about you speak for themselves without any embellishments. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) This is a good week to balance your responsibilities to your work-a-day world with your obligations to the people in your private life. Expect news that could lead to a change in plans. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A changing attitude on the part of a once determined adversary could cause changes down the line. Be prepared to take advantage of an unexpected new opportunity. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You’d be a truly wise Sagittarius to be skeptical about an offer that doesn’t answer all your questions. Even a colleague’s testimonial doesn’t replace facts that aren’t there. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) It’s a good idea to avoid spending on unnecessary purchases this week in order to keep a money reserve against a possible upcoming (but, fortunately, temporary) shortfall. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) More information is what you should demand regarding that workplace situation that recently came to light. Don’t be surprised at who might turn up as one of your supporters. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You might still be in a “treading water” mode, but by midweek, a shift in your aspect favors taking a more active role in pushing for the changes you feel are necessary. Good luck. BORN THIS WEEK: You exude a warm, caring attitude that comforts everyone who comes into your life. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

VOCATIONAL SCHOOLING CAN PAVE THE WAY TO HIGH-PAYING JOBS Many students believe that the next natural step after graduating from high school is to go off to college. Secondary education has become such a common transition that many parents begin saving for college tuition as soon as their children are born. Although college can be the next chapter in a student’s education, many teenagers still choose to attend trade school. Television personality Mike Rowe says the country is in the midst of a skilled labor shortage because workers lack the necessary training to fill the hundreds of thousands of available jobs. Lack of information may drive the notion that trade jobs are nothing more than a backup plan if college doesn’t pan out. However, by realizing that trade jobs, along with short-term vocational training, is a smart investment - and eventually a lucrative career choice - attitudes about trade schools and laborintensive jobs may shift. A great number of college graduates enter the workforce with degrees that may not help them land jobs. And these students typically carry thousands of dollars in tuition debt. Many college grads are underemployed and working in jobs that aren’t even in their fields of study. Career and technical schools help students develop specialized skills that make graduates immediately marketable in their chosen fields, and trade salaries can be very competitive. EMPLOYMENT

624-7870 BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Squeeze in a midday workout. Numerous studies have shown the many benefits to daily exercise, but professionals may not know that exercise can help improve their productivity at the office. A 2005 study from researchers at the then-named Leeds Metropolitan University in England asked 200 workers to answer questions regarding their productivity on days when they exercised at lunchtime and days when they did not exercise. Sixty percent said their job performance, including their ability to meet deadlines and manage their time, improved by a considerable amount on the days when they exercised.

RELOCATING FOR A NEW JOB Emphasize organization. Much of the stress associated with relocating can be traced to the logistics of uprooting oneself and one’s family. Men and women who are unaccustomed to making lists may want to start, as doing so can help keep track of all the tasks that need to be completed before hitting the road. Various unique tasks, from canceling utilities to changing insurance policies, must be completed before moving, and it’s easy to lose track of what’s been done and what hasn’t. Maintaining a to-do list and checking off tasks as they’re completed can simplify the relocation process. HOW TO NEGOTIATE (AND GET) A SALARY INCREASE Salaries in the workplace have long been a hot-button issue for women. The differences in compensation for males and females continues to draw the attention of politicians and gender equality advocates alike. The United States Department of Labor noted that, in 2015, the median weekly earnings for fulltime male workers increased by 2.2 percent from the year prior. During that same period, female earnings increased by just 0.8 percent. That latest data marks the third consecutive quarter that the increase in males’ earnings doubled that of females. On average, women who work fulltime earn 81.1 cents for every dollar men earn. Women aware of that unfair gap in pay may feel helpless to address it with their bosses out of fear of being seen as unappreciative or selfish. In fact, addressing compensation makes many workers uncomfortable, regardless of their gender. According to a salary survey from PayScale, almost 60 percent of male and female workers do not ask for a raise. Negotiating salary increases requires finesse, timing and being informed. It also requires a certain measure of gumption. EMPLOYMENT
