BENEFITS OF HIRING PROFESSIONAL CONTRACTORS Experience: A trial and error approach can work with various projects and problems. But applying such an approach to home improvement projects is risky and potentially dangerous, not to mention costly. Experienced professional contractors with strong track records (seek recommendations from friends or neighbors) won’t have to go through trial and error and are therefore more likely than DIYers to complete a project on time and on budget.

CONTROL CRABGRASS BEFORE IT APPEARS Crabgrass is a common problem that appears in summer. According to Lowes, crabgrass plants produce thousands of seeds between midsummer and early fall. While the first frosts of late-fall or early winter kill the crabgrass plants, the seeds produced by the plants remain dormant throughout winter and then begin to grow as the ground temperature warms up with the spring and summer thaw. As a result, controlling germination, which is the development of a plant from a seed or spore after a period of dormancy, is the key to preventing crabgrass from becoming an unsightly blemish that can harm your lawn in summer. Aesthetic appeal is one of the most sought-after benefits of gardening. However, many homeowners put in so much effort planting for one particular season that they may not give thought to ensuring the garden looks vibrant no matter the time of year. Gardeners can research planting zones to find plants that will blossom at different times of the year so they can enjoy impressive, aesthetically appealing gardens year-round. Spring bulbs can bloom early on, while annual and perennial summer favorites will thrive under the summer sun. Beautyberry and caryopteris will fill out in the autumn, while holly or mahonia can look lovely in the winter.

In fact, his speeches at the House of Commons were so boring, many MPs left the building once he stood up. * While Jackie Robinson was laid up for two weeks in 1948 with a hamstring injury, the Dodgers secretly replaced him with Herschel Morowitz, a white man in black face. * Drinking seawater will cause rapid dehydration and, if enough is consumed, eventually death. Frozen seawater is a much safer alternative, since it contains only a tenth as much salt as the liquid form, due to the fact that the salt is separated from the water when freezing as it does not fit into the crystalline structure of ice. Vax “Rules” First of all, there are no “rules” within a community when it comes to vaccinating. Secondly, you have some nerve telling people to go into seclusion because of their choice to not take a vaccine that is not FDA approved and is only in its trial stages. If you’re vaccinated, then what are you afraid of? Supposedly, you are protected from the virus, so those of us who are unvaccinated should not be a threat to you. That was a very arrogant statement you made there.

S E V RA Kindness I want to thank the nice lady who helped my mother who is on a walker and myself on a cane, to get a beautiful fuchsia plant down at [local store] off [local road]. Neither myself or the young girl working in that department could reach the plant. This kind lady got it down for us, and we told her we wanted it to attract hummingbirds. It is nice to know that there are still kind and wonderful people out there to help others. Thank you so very much. And to the lady behind us in line complaining that we were slowing her up because she only wanted to pay for mulch: Maybe someday you will get older, and it will take you time to get your money out. I hope someone just like you is behind you in line! Maybe you should also apologize to your husband who you screamed at about us. Why can’t everyone be kind like the other lady was? Hats off to Nick! Hats off to Nick at UR Urgent Care in Spencerport! On Thursday night, I called the Urgent Care for my husband. Unfortunately, they were not opened. I left a message, and they said that someone would call back. With the holiday weekend approaching, I never really expected to hear back from anyone. I was quite surprised when the next morning, I received a call from Nick at Urgent Care. He called up to see what was going on and how he could help. He was kind, concerned, and very pleasant. I was impressed! In fact, after the initial call, he called again to ask me if I wanted to speak to a provider. In the stressfilled world we find ourselves in, sometimes people can unintentionally overlook things. This can be especially true with those in high profile occupations such as those in the medical environment. So, Nick making sure that he contacted me after hearing my message was quite a relief and truly appreciated by my family and I.

Vaccine Seclusion Vaccines have never been a part of any rules for living in a community. You must be living on Animal Farm where you come from. It appears as though the coronavirus hysterics are still alive and well. I’m not vaccinated. What are you going to do about that? I have not worn a mask nor social distanced since this whole pandemic kicked off, and I never once got sick. Boy, the petty, irrelevant garbage that people will concern themselves with never ceases to amaze me.

Whether to vaccinate Yes, it’s your body and your choice, but when you get infected, you risk the lives of all of those around you. I’m sure you’ll expect medical personnel to risk their lives and well-being to care for you. So, don’t get vaccinated, but please stay home when you become ill. No masks at the grocery store? I’ve read the statistics and know half the population is not vaccinated. Why then is no one wearing a mask in this heavily-trafficked public place? If you haven’t gotten your vaccine make the right choice and wear your mask!

By Lucie Winborne * Sigurd the Mighty, a ninth-century Norse earl of Orkney, was killed by an enemy he had beheaded several hours earlier. He’d tied the man’s head to his horse’s saddle, but while riding home one of its protruding teeth grazed his leg, causing an infection from which the unlucky Sigurd died.

GUIDELINES FOR HOMETOWN EVENTS:

Resolutions regarding personal health are annually among the most popular changes people hope to make at the dawn of a new year. In fact, a quick scan of annual lists citing the most popular resolutions found that pledges to eat healthier and exercise more can be found at or near the top of such lists. Though such lists might not have been compiled using the most scientific of methods, it’s no secret that getting healthier and looking better is a goal many people strive for upon the arrival of January 1. Unfortunately, a 2015 report from U.S. News & World Report suggested that 80 percent of resolutions fail, oftentimes as early as February. For those who don’t just want but need to get healthier, failure to live up to a resolution to exercise more can have potentially devastating consequences. If exercising more is a goal in the year ahead, the following are a few strategies to make that happen. Exercise in the early morning. As the day progresses, unforeseen challenges or forgotten commitments have a way of devouring time initially earmarked for exercise. Exercise first thing in the morning before any commitments to work and family hijack the time you have committed to exercising. Take on less responsibility. Professionals and parents often cite commitments to work and family as the primary reasons they aren’t getting enough exercise. While those are perfectly reasonable excuses to skip a workout, men and women who recognize the long-term benefits of routine exercise may be compelled to take on less responsibility at work while also making an effort to divvy up responsibilities at home more equitably. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, ongoing exercise can reduce risk for cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and some cancers. The CDC also notes that routine exercise strengthens bones and muscles while improving mood. Taking on more responsibility at work might be great for your career, but that may prove a Pyrrhic victory if your long-term health is jeopardized. Parents can discuss with their spouse how to better share responsibilities at home so both moms and dads can get regular exercise. Embrace more efficient exercise routines. Rather than working a single muscle group at a time, which can be both time-consuming and boring, men and women can adapt their workout routines to focus on multimuscle exercises. Work with a personal trainer to make your workout as efficient as possible. Schedule your routine each week. Each week is different, so while it may be ideal to establish a workout routine in which you exercise at the same time each day, that’s not always going to be possible. Failing to exercise on a day you had intended to workout can compromise your motivation to workout in the future, so sit down at the beginning of each week to examine your commitments for the days ahead and schedule times to exercise in the next seven days. This can keep you on track and help you avoid the disappointment of missing a workout because life got in the way. Finding time to exercise is not always so easy, but even the busiest men and women can likely still include workouts in their daily routines.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Patient History More Than Just Medical Facts ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 77 years old. When I go to a new doctor, there is always that past history form to fill out. I know to include current medications, including OTC and allergies, but how far back should I go? Should I include the tonsillectomy when I was in grade school (I don’t recall how old I was)? Or the surgery to remove a benign tumor from my right femur in 1955? The miscarriage in 1961? Or that the last of my five children was born over 40 years ago? I would include the surgery because my right leg is about 3/4 inch shorter than my left. After all these years, it causes a backache after standing too long. -- S.B. ANSWER: In general, doctors want all the information you can give. However, past medical history tends to become less important as people get older. I agree with you that the surgery on your femur is important: Even now, a leglength discrepancy may still benefit from being addressed. A small (half the discrepancy or less) adjustment to the shoe of your shorter right leg may help reduce your backache. If I were your new doctor, it would be important to me to know you had a 40-year-old son (and about the rest of your children), but that would be more to know who you are as a person. I also ask my patients to identify someone in their family who can help make decisions if you are unable to. That should be done formally, through a health care proxy designation, which is complementary to the advance directive that all adults should have. It’s a privilege for me as a primary care doctor to get to know my patients and follow them over years, sometimes many years.

Chicken is generally lower in saturated fat than other animal protein sources. Opt for pasture-raised chicken for the greatest nutritional punch.

AT-HOME NUTRITION AND COOKING WITH KIDS RECIPES FOR FUN: If you’re preparing a meal, it could be a good time to teach children of reading age how to review a recipe. Evaluating ingredients to learn how food transforms from raw to cooked or how a dish is created can help kids learn kitchen skills.

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2021 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved ●

FOOD GROUPS FOCUS: Get kids involved in making dinner by setting a rule that each food group must be represented. Give them a warmup activity by asking which food groups are found in family favorites like chicken soup, lasagna or meatloaf. Asking kids to guess which ingredients are used in these dishes and identifying which food group each ingredient belongs to can help them understand dietary balance.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles What You Can Do About Rising Food Prices According to the Consumer Price Index, food prices from one year ago have gone up 3.3%. It’s not going to stop there. Non-food prices are going up as well, as companies struggle to find the raw materials and manpower they need to produce everything else. Fitness equipment, furniture, lumber, gas, electronics -- it’s all going up. What we have to be concerned with, however, is our most basic need: food. Even if you’ve never felt any urgency before, check into your local food bank. Keep the information handy, just in case you need it later. Look at store brands. Many are even better than the name brands. Make every dollar count. Sign up for a grocery store rewards card, if it’s available. Use a private throwaway email address, the one you use to sign up for things that might generate too much junk mail. You’ll likely get emails about sales with coupons. (At my store, I log in at the checkout and get cash back at the end of each quarter.) Look to your own vegetable garden or farmers markets as ways to save. If you want to do canning this summer, one heads up: Be certain you can get the jars, lids and rings at the same time. They might be in short supply. Freezing meals is another option and ensures that food is always available. Double a stew or soup recipe and buy in bulk when it makes sense to. Shop from a list to the extent you can, knowing that stores can be out of things you want. Consider having breakfast for dinner one night a week, and one meatless dinner. Plan meals around what’s on sale each week. It bears repeating: Find out about your local food bank. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Remembering War Dogs

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson

Hello! My name is

* Add a cinnamon stick or softener sheet to your vacuum bag when you change it. As you clean, you will distribute the good smell throughout your home.

Sunday.

My parents named me after the best day of the week. I am a 4-year-old pit bull mix, with a golden blonde coat and an adorable pink nose. I love to play with my pup brother Sheldon and have snuggle time with my family. My favorite treat is bananas in my breakfast bowl!

* To ripen a green tomato, wrap it in a sheet of newspaper or place it in a paper bag. It can then be left on the counter for several days to ripen.

Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

Lessons, training, good food, water, shelter at all times, NO MUD! Great pastures, groomed trails, clean, dry, 10x12 matted stalls. Outside ring, board + electric fencing. Never left out in bad weather, 20 minutes from Rochester. Full care, gelds.

* “Need to remove fruit or food coloring stains on your hands or your countertop? White vinegar will clean it off. It’s good for so many things.” -- R.N. in Washington * “Instead of baking soda, I use three or four charcoal briquettes in a bowl to control odor and moisture in my refrigerator. I place the briquettes in a shallow dish, then cover the top of the bowl with a small piece of cheesecloth and secure it with a fat rubber band. The best thing is that I can still use these briquettes on the grill. In the summer, they get changed very regularly.” -M.L. in Virginia * Great ways to remove stuck labels: nail polish remover (NOT for use on plastics), WD-40 oil, soaking in hot water, rubbing alcohol. * Have a stained coffee pot, but don’t want to use a harsh chemical cleanser to scrub that stain off? For gritty cleaning power, try using a tablespoon of milk and a tablespoon of salt. The salt gives you scrubbing power, and the milk’s acids help gently dissolve the stains.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: During Memorial Day week, I wanted to bring your readers’ attention to the service and sacrifice of the thousands of dogs who went to war with their soldiers. Many did not come home, because they either died during operations or were left behind. Please take a few minutes this week to remember these four-footed warriors -- Jim W., Chattanooga DEAR JIM: Request received! Thank you for calling attention to the sacrifices of military working dogs. The U.S. armed forces has had a military dog program since World War II. These canine warriors help detect mines and improvised explosive devices (IEDs), provide security on bases and much more. Between 2001 and 2013, over 2,600 “war dogs” were deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq. In that time, at least 92 are known to have died, the majority in combat. However, in all this time, there was no military-wide tracking system of its injured war dogs. How often were they injured or killed? What were their injuries like? How did they fare after their service? Data that would be helpful in treating other injured war dogs was being lost. In January, funding was passed for a Military Working Dogs Trauma Registry (for details, go to www.avma. org and search for “working dogs, combat injuries”). Veterinarians will be able to consult the registry to learn more about war dog combat injuries and better ways to treat them. Injured war dogs will have a better chance of survival. Retired dogs will be able to get more effective treatment for their wounds. This legislation is a huge, active step toward truly honoring the sacrifices of military working dogs and can help even more of them come home. Send your questions, tips or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

However, it is helpful to customize your résumé so that it is geared toward the position for which you are applying. 585-624-1234 IMPROVE ALERTNESS DURING THE WORKDAY Change your workout schedule. Regular exercise improves shortand long-term health while also increasing daily energy levels. Professionals who include exercise in their daily routines yet still suffer from a lack of alertness in the afternoon may need to alter their workout schedules. A 2011 study published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine found that participants who were assigned afternoon exercise programs during work hours reported increased productivity versus those who were not assigned afternoon workouts. If working out in the afternoon is not feasible, avoid working out too late at night, as the National Institutes of Health note that exercising within two to three hours of bedtime can disrupt sleep, ultimately having a negative impact on energy levels the following day.

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A TEAM PLAYER The ability to communicate, interact and work collectively with others is both a professional and personal asset. But in certain ways, the reliance on technology has made working as a team more complicated. People have grown accustomed to spending large quantities of time alone working at computers or on phones and tablets, potentially compromising their ability to work directly with others when the need arises. According to Monster.com, when it comes to choosing a candidate for a new job or promotion, employers consistently say they want a team player. That means it’s advantageous for professionals looking to further their careers to brush up on their team-building and social skills.
