ACCLIMATING TO A NEW NEIGHBORHOOD For a number of people, this may be the year they relocate to a new home or apartment. The moving rate in the United States has remained steady since 2008, with roughly 12 percent of the population relocating each year according to reports from the U.S. Census Bureau. Movement to the suburbs continues to be high, and renters tend to move more frequently than others. People who move cite a new job or a job transfer as one of the primary motivators to relocate. Acclimating to a new home and neighborhood after a move can be challenging. Even after boxes have been unpacked and items put away, some people still feel unsettled. It could be because one of the most important parts of being in a new house is feeling at home. That involves meeting neighbors, having friends over for dinner and knowing all of the local haunts that help solidify a homeowner as a true member of his or her new neighborhood. It can take time to establish feeings of belonging.
After moving, getting acclimated to a new neighborhood and making new friends is one way to feel at home.

LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY Crowd control: Local restaurants tend to be smaller and more intimate than many chain restaurants. This can translate into a calm dining experience. When crowds are small, the noise level inside the restaurant may be muted and service may be fast because there aren’t as many tables to serve. Furthermore, local establishments, although concerned about making a profit, may be less worried about table turnover rate, preferring to let diners linger if it means repeat business. When the weather warms, many people take to the outdoors to enjoy the sunshine and rising temperatures. Summer road trips or vacations are the norm, but it is important to realize that hot weather can take its toll even on a new, well-maintained vehicle. High temperatures can cause all sorts of damage to a vehicle, from zapping battery power to overtaxing the cooling system. Protect Your M obile Devices - and Your Identity (Family Features) M obile devices have become an indispensable tool for many people - and the thought of losing one of those devices, or having it stolen, is disco ncerting, to say the least. But it happens every day. It’s estimated that lost or stolen phones alone could cost U.S. users $30 billion in 2012. W hen a phone or tablet goes missing, so does a lot of personal information. And that can lead to m ore than just some inconvenience - it can lead to a stolen identity. The Federal Trade Commission estimates that as many as 9 million Americans have their identities s tolen each year. W hile identity thieves still resort to old-fashioned methods of information gathering, like go ing through trash and stealing w allets and purses, they can also get the personal information you store on your mobile device.

from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County Where is a good place to buy milkweed seeds? – Bonnie Milkweed seeds may be purchased most readily from online sources including Prairie Moon Nursery, where I have been satisfied with my purchases. There are several varieties of milkweed native to the northeast. I would recommend butterfly weed (ASCLEPIAS TUBEROSA) as most appropriate for a home garden. Some people grow common field milkweed (ASCLEPIAS SYRIACA), but it has deep rhizomes (roots) that will spread over a large area.
I would like to plant some native flowers to attract butterflies and birds. Where do I get a list of such plants that are good for this area? – Bonnie There are so many interesting and beautiful native plants to choose from. The Finger Lakes Native Plant Society, website flnps.org, has an
exhaustive list of native plants in a 25-page printable list entitled “Native Plants Suitable for Wildflower Gardens & Meadows or Traditional Gardens in the NY Finger Lakes.” It is divided into 5 categories – 1. Herbaceous Plants-Annuals, Biennials, Perennials; 2. Ferns & Fern Allies; 3. Grasses, Sedges, Rushes; 4. Vines; 5. Shrubs & Trees.
Amanda’s Garden, Native Perennial Nursery. It is located in Sparta, NY (Dansville mailing address), at a beautiful site on Story Rd south of Hemlock Lake. The website is amandasnativeplants.com and contains an “Our Plants” section which includes images of native plants with brief descriptions. You can also sign up for their newsletter in which Anyone in our area interested they cover many aspects of native in native plants should know about perennial gardening.

Discover Reforestation and Rewilding at 100 Acres By Janet Chaize and Carol Barnett
I
n 2018, the Rush Recreation and Park Association (Rush RPA), a non-profit and tax-exempt organization, was formed by a group of Rush residents to protect green space and public land in Rush. Consisting of a group of residents who volunteer their time to preserve and enhance the wild nature of Rush while helping others to enjoy its wild spaces, the Rush RPA held a series of forums from 2018-2019 on such topics as pollinators, birds, forest bathing, the importance of protecting forests, organic farming and community green space. “This month, we are inviting everyone to join at the 100 Acres of the Rush Riverside Refuge for our next event, “Reforestation and Re-Wilding Solutions for any Outdoor Space,” on Saturday, July 27th, 9am-noon,” said Rush RPA board member, Janet Chaize. The rain date is set for Sunday, July 28th. The Hundred Acres is located at 250 Rush Scottsville Rd. (Route 251), west of the intersection with East River Road, on the north side of 251, and was donated to the town to be used as a green space. “30% of the 100 acres are in fields that have been farmed,” explained Chaize. “Our foundation, designed to help our municipality, has been working with the town to transform it.” Reforestation participants will gather just west of the entrance to the Railroad Museum. Guests may park on the side of the road or on a large grassy area opposite the Railroad Museum. “Be careful crossing the road if you use that option,” advised Rush RPA board member Carol Barnett. “Dress for changeable weather and to avoid ticks in any grassy areas.” Guests will examine nature’s way of re-wilding fields, using proven principles and methods from permaculture. These solutions can be applied to outdoor spaces of any type and size, from homesurban and suburban-to municipalities and outlying farms, fields and forests. Guests are invited to explore ways in which forests regenerate water, produce food and restore the eco system.
A view of the Genesee River along part of the 100 acres property.
The fields, if returned to nature, could become a mix of meadow and forest very appealing to wildlife and birds.” “A walk among trees is rejuvenating, nourishing and healing,” Barnett observed. “Trees and forests are essential to all living things, and there is a lot going on in the forests that we can’t see.” Trees absorb CO2 from the atmosphere and release oxygen. They prevent or reduce soil erosion and water contamination while their roots serve as natural nets spreading extensively into the ground to hold the soil in place. As soil runoff is prevented, essential nutrients are retained, and the soil remain fertile. Trees add compost to the soil from falling leaves and dried branches. Old growth forests, in particular, help trees have resilience in dealing with disease, drought and overly wet conditions. New research has also discovered trees’ incredible underground root system which allows trees to communicate with and support each other. “Trees send messages to each other to determine which trees need what nutrients,” said Chaize. “Research in Canada showed that birch trees sent carbon to fir trees when fir trees were shaded, and in the winter, when the birch were leafless, the firs sent carbon to the birch trees!” “We hope to transform 100 Acres into something beautiful, adding more trails to benefit those in Monroe County, Livingston County and beyond,” said Chaize. “We are also hoping that to engage colleges like RIT and SUNY Brockport which are concerned with the Genesee River.” The Rush RPA is also interested in grants to further its efforts. Those interested in - Janet Chaize hiking, bird watching, wildlife identification, reforestation, pollinators, “Eastern prairies,” composting and other nature-based pursuits are encouraged join the Rush RPA and attend its events. Sign up for the 100 Acres event is requested but not required. There is no cost, but donations for presenter Kay Megorden-Staten will be gratefully accepted. To learn more, read our mission or become a charter member, visit rushrpa.org.
We have the opportunity to create something really special.
An aerial shot of the field portion of the 100 acres.
“Our presenter, Kay Megorden-Staten, is certified in Permaculture Design and is a Teacher, Herbalist, Artisan, Consultant and Designer,” said Chaize. “With her, we will discuss an ecosystem’s water, soil, wind, sun, contour, polycultures, invasive species, biomass, plants and habitats. We will also identify natural patterns in the landscape that will be used to guide our decisions for restoring a resilient landscape with multi-functions.” The special beauty of the Hundred Acres of the Rush Riverside Refuge already includes old growth forest, diverse flora and fauna, and views of the Genesee River. 100 Acres, which extends for a mile along the Genesee River and contains about 50 acres of forest, much of which is old growth and 50 acres of a mix of fields, hedgerows and trees, plays a delicate role in the region’s ecosystem and is part of the Lake Ontario watershed. “We have the opportunity to create something really special right here in Monroe County,” explained Chaize. “Experts from Cornell have confirmed that some old growth trees are over 100 years old.

HOW TO KEEP GRILLED FOODS WARM Create a tin foil tent and place foods inside. The tent can then be placed on a less hot area of the grill or placed into an oven that’s not on. Avoid tenting foods that are meant to have crispy skins, as tenting can moisten the skin.

Another way to help the planet when spending time outdoors this summer is to vacation locally. People who vacation close to home typically do not fly, and that’s a significant benefit to the planet. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change notes that aviation emissions release black carbon, nitrous oxide and sulphur oxide, which contribute to the greenhouse gas effect. And while the EIA notes that automobiles and airplanes produce relatively similar amounts of carbon dioxide per gallon, airplanes burn considerably more fuel than cars, thanks in large part to the considerable amount of fuel planes burn on the runway. By vacationing locally, outdoor enthusiasts can reduce their reliance on airplanes, thereby reducing the effects those airplanes have on the environment. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

The entryway to a home is the first thing guests experience when coming inside. It also can be the first place residents drop their belongings after long days at school or work. As a result, entryways can quickly be consumed by clutter. Taming such messes takes a mixture of ingenuity and planning. Homeowners hoping to clear their entryways of clutter must first decide what they want to get out of the space. Will it simply be a decorative spot with photos and other home decor on display? Or is functionality the primary goal? Once that decision has been made, take inventory of which items, such as shoes, keys, umbrellas or coats, need to be in the area, which don’t (i.e., old mail). To make things more organized, rearrange the former while removing the latter. Next it is time to assess storage needs and what’s already available. User-friendly storage items may need to be purchased to make the room as functional as possible.
ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your honesty is, as always, admirable. But you might want to be more tactful in discussing a sensitive issue with a family member. Remember: You can give advice without giving offense. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) An unexpected workplace snag should be handled quickly and efficiently so that it leaves you time for family get-togethers. Also, you might soon get that long-sought apology. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Aspects favor family matters, especially where children might be involved. Spending time with loved ones helps restore some much-needed balance to your typically busy schedule. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) That seemingly clear-cut agreement might not be quite so straightforward after all. Recheck for language that could make you liable for hidden costs and other unpleasant surprises. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Careful, Kitty. Better to deal with someone with proven reliability than with a big talker who promises much but can’t confirm that he or she will deliver. Your social life really zings this weekend. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your matchmaking skills are at peak performance levels both in helping to staff workplace teams for upcoming projects and for bringing people together on a more personal basis. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You’re finally seeing some progress with your new venture. But be prepared for it to continue at a slower pace than you’re used to. Meanwhile, a loved one could be preparing a surprise. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A family member’s success pulls you into the spotlight as well. Enjoy it, but don’t let it overshadow or otherwise obstruct what you’re doing with your own creative projects. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Using what you already know might not be quite enough to get a proposed project off the ground. Look for any new information that might help tilt the scales in your favor. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Good news: While a changing workplace environment can be daunting for some, it could be the challenge you’ve been hoping for. If so, confront it with confidence and move on. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) It’s a good time to recheck travel arrangements for any changes that could work to your advantage. Aspects also favor strengthening and restoring old, fraying relationships. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Using your intuitive reasoning helps you cut right through the double-talk and go straight to what’s really going on around you. Stay the course until all your questions are answered. BORN THIS WEEK: You radiate light and warmth, and others love being close to you. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

Spring and summer are synonymous with increased hours of sunlight, warm temperatures and, oftentimes, an increased reliance on water to feed recreational pursuits and lawn and garden needs. The Water Information Program states that 3.9 trillion gallons of water are consumed in the United States each month and the average person uses 176 gallons of water per day. Water conservation may be essential when the risk for weather-related drought looms. Practicing year-round conservation efforts can help ensure smart usage of local watersheds, lakes and reservoirs and help maintain these water sources for years to come. It also helps the average person reduce his or her carbon footprint while saving people a little money along the way.

COMPOSITE DECKING CAN BE A SMART CHOICE Decks add character and functionality to a home, increasing outdoor entertaining space and oftentimes improving the resale value of a home. Homeowners have various options when choosing decking materials, but one such option, composite decking, is growing in popularity. Decks used to primarily be made from pressure-treated lumber. While lumber remains a popular material, more and more homeowners are opting for composite decking products. As anyone who has pressure-washed, stained and sealed wood decks can attest, such spaces require lots of upkeep to look new year after year. Composite decks require much less maintenance, making them highly attractive to homeowners who would rather spend time using their decks instead of maintaining them.

JB Hart Enterprise Inc. DID YOU KNOW? According to a survey of its users, the home improvement resource HomeAdvisor found that the average kitchen remodeling project took six weeks to complete. While some homeowners might be turned off by the prospect of having little or no access to their kitchens for more than a month, HomeAdvisor warns that the length of time it takes to complete a kitchen remodeling project depends on a host of factors, including the scope of the project. Some homeowners reported to HomeAdvisor that their projects lasted for several months, though those projects required extensive work, including moving walls and rearranging plumbing. Others who only replaced the flooring and countertops in their kitchens were back in business in just three weeks. Homeowners should always receive a projected completion date when soliciting estimates from contractors. But it’s also important that homeowners plan for unforeseen problems that may arise during the project, thereby extending the length of time necessary to complete it.

HOBBIES FOR DIFFERENT PERSONALITY TYPES Men and women who have experienced great success in the world of business can pursue a host of low-stress opportunities with a goal of sharing their experiences with the next generation of business leaders. Teaching a course at a local college or university is one such avenue, and executives can even offer to work with high school students interested in pursuing careers in business. Teaching and mentoring might be less traditional hobbies than crocheting or woodworking, but they still provide a way for adults to pursue their passions away from the constraints of the office.

I am writing this letter to convey my most deep and sincere appreciation for the incredibly supportive help I received during an emergency at my home in early June. Words cannot express my gratitude to Mike Kellogg, my neighbor who was there for me and went above and beyond to ensure my safety as well To those who are defending flying the Confederate flag: It is the 21st century, not the 19th. Regardless of your reasons for flying the flag, it has come to represent white supremacy. By flying it you are self-identifying as and aligning yourself with these terrorist groups, intentionally or not. It’s like flying a swastika and claiming you are not a Nazi sympathizer. Good luck with that. Then there is the issue of the Civil War ending over 150 years ago as did the Confederacy, so what’s your point? It’s time to let it go and move on. It’s not like you were around then and had a personal investment in the Southern cause. There is no place for the Confederate flag in the 21st century, save for in history museums. as to the First Responders whose determination to assist me helped save my life that day. Mike, your continued support and selfless acts of kindness to make things easier for me has not gone unnoticed; I am forever in your debt. To my family of 47 years at Graham Manufacturing, thank you for your love and kindness and inquiries, you are all unsung heroes in my book. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart. Sincerely, Lance Frens On the evening of June 12, 2019, my cat Kitten got hit by a car on Black Street Rd. in LeRoy. I would like to thank the lady kids could not play on a privately-owned, church playground: Empathy has nothing to do with it. That play equipment belongs to the church. I expect they are not in a position to maintain it for public use nor take on any liability for misuse. You probably should have stopped, but I get it, you may be a high school kid and were scared. My neighbors have regularly let the dog roam our neighborhood for years. Their previous dogs as well. REFRESH YOUR SMILE!
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Is ‘Beaver Fever’ Cause of Digestive Trouble?
Make your appointment today! (585) 424-5710 Convenient Brighton location 200 White Spruce Blvd • Suite 128 • Rochester
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: Last summer I went camping and ran out of clean water. I had to boil water and drink it without any treatment tablets. That evening, I had painful cramps in my stomach, and in my upper abdomen, under my ribcage. Since then, my digestion has been horrific. I have constant rank gas and bloating when eating foods I’ve never had a problem with before, even fruits and vegetables. I have been a big eater of probiotic foods, with no digestive disturbances. However, since this incident, any form of probiotic, whether from capsule or natural foods like sauerkraut or kimchi, gives me the worst gas and bloating I’ve ever had. I had parasite and bacterial stool testing done with my doctor, and I came up clear. I feel like I need antibiotics or something to clear whatever is going on with my digestive system, but I’m hesitant because I have had four rounds of antibiotics in 2017 from surgeries. I am worried about “beaver fever.” What do you recommend? -- A.L. ANSWER: There are several infections one can get from drinking unprocessed water while camping. “Beaver fever” is a name for infection from the parasite Giardia lamblia, which is found in water where animals (especially beavers) are found. It’s a reasonable thought -- it’s one of the few waterborne infections that can persist for months. However, I think Giardia is unlikely. Symptoms from Giardia normally begin one to two weeks after exposure, and the parasites are killed very rapidly by boiling water. Your symptoms are very much like irritable bowel syndrome, and I do wonder if it might have been triggered by some event that day you were camping. Usually, three sets of cultures for parasites are done to make sure there isn’t an unwelcome guest in your intestine causing symptoms. A gastroenterologist would be a good choice to help you track down an identifiable cause and to get some symptomatic relief. Antibiotics are not recommended without knowing what you are treating.

DEAR DR. ROACH: Seven years ago, I had a stroke. I was immediately put on Lipitor and Plavix. The statin drugs made my arms and shoulders ache, and the doctor tested me and found no reason for it. He said anecdotally that he had many patients who complained of the same thing. He then put me on fenofibrate. The pain stopped immediately. Now he says new research shows that any cholesterol-lowering drug makes the blood tests show lowered cholesterol levels but it does not prevent heart attack or stroke. So he took me off it. I wonder if you know anything about this study that said there was no benefit to taking statins. I did not really understand what he said. -- G.C. ANSWER: It sounds like the message got a bit confused. The evidence that statin drugs reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke in people at high risk, such as those who have had a previous event, is very strong. However, the evidence for fibrate drugs, such as fenofibrate, is much weaker. Statin drugs often cause some muscle aches. Pravastatin and fluvastatin are least likely to cause this problem, so it’s worth a try switching, in my opinion. Some people get relief from muscle aches with a CoQ10 supplement. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel On July 19, 1884, President Chester Arthur issues a proclamation that grants him and the federal government the power to quarantine persons entering the U.S. to avoid the spread of “pestilence” (tuberculosis). On July 17, 1941, New York Yankees center fielder Joe DiMaggio fails to get a hit against the Cleveland Indians, bringing his historic 56-game hitting streak to an end. DiMaggio also lost the $10,000 promised to him by Heinz ketchup for matching the number “57” featured on its labels. On July 21, 1959, Elijah Jerry “Pumpsie” Green makes his Boston Red Sox debut, becoming the first African American ever to play for the Red Sox, the last team in the major leagues to integrate. On July 20, 1972, a two-year study by the U.S. Department of Transportation concludes that 1960-63 Chevrolet Corvairs are at least as safe as comparable models of other cars. In his book “Unsafe at Any Speed,” Ralph Nader had targeted the rear-engined Corvair due to its tendency to roll over.

Health Benefits Of Plant-Based Nutrition (NAPS)—As people continue to look for ways to live healthier lifestyles, the plant-based diet continues to gain momentum. A plant-based diet describes a way of eating in which there is an emphasis on plant foods in the form of colorful fruits and vegetables, legumes and whole grains. Supporting Your Health with Plant-Based Foods Benefits of eating more plant foods are numerous. Plant foods are nutrient dense, which means that they provide an abundance of nutrients relative to their calorie cost. Fruits, veggies, beans and whole grains are terrific sources of vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients and they’re naturally cholesterol-free. Most contribute a fair amount of fiber, too, so they help to fill you up and keep your digestive tract running smoothly. When you include plenty of these nutritious, filling foods in your diet, it leaves less room in your stomach for less healthy fare. That said, as the proportion of U.S. consumers who adhere to a vegan diet grows, so does the desire for these people to get more protein. In fact, a Nielsen HomeScan survey recently found that 39 percent of Americans are actively trying to eat more plant-based foods and 60 percent want to get more protein in their diets. Identifying Sources of Plant-Based Proteins The major sources of plant-based protein include beans, peas and lentils but whole grains are also important. You may think of whole grains as more of a carb than a protein and that’s true—most grains have more carbohydrate calories than protein calories. But whole grains contribute important essential amino acids to the diet. Most vegans know that in order to get the full complement of essential amino acids (the building blocks of proteins in the body), it’s important to consume both legumes (beans, peas, lentils) and whole grains. Soy is one of the few complete plant-based proteins, meaning it contains the nine essential amino acids that your body cannot produce on its own. How Much Protein Is Right For You? Protein is important for maintaining lean body mass. Susan Bowerman, Registered Dietitian and Senior Director of Worldwide Nutrition Education and Training at Herbalife Nutrition says the Institute of Medicine recommends you eat 10 to 35 percent of your total daily calories from protein. You can estimate your protein needs based on your current body weight. Simply, multiply your body weight by 0.7. The number you get is a reasonable target for the amount of protein, in grams, that you should eat each day. For instance, a woman who weighs 140 pounds should aim for about 100g of protein a day. A 220-pound man should shoot for at least 150g of protein. Introducing Other Plant-Based Proteins While most plant-based diets place an emphasis on whole foods, other plant-based foods that are derived from these whole foods can be included. So, in addition to legumes and whole grains (brown or wild rice, oats, quinoa, millet and the like), other sources of plant-based protein include soy milk, soy cheese, soy yogurt, tofu, tempeh, and protein powders made from plant sources such as soy, pea, rice, hemp, oats or quinoa. To help, Herbalife Nutrition’s Formula 1 Select and Protein Drink Mix Select are two new plant-based nutrition mixes specially formulated with a high-quality blend of pea, quinoa and rice proteins. Formula 1 Select is specially formulated to provide an excellent balance of protein and other key nutrients for optimal nutrition, is an easily digestible source of high-quality plant protein and fiber, and contains no artificial flavors or sweeteners. HEALTH BENEFITS OF HONEY Has antibacterial and antifungal properties: According to the Honey Research Unit at the University of Waikato in New Zealand, honey is antibacterial. Honey will not foster growth of these microorganisms because it contains small amounts of hydrogen peroxide. Because of these properties, some people say that honey can help disorders such as ulcers and bacterial gastroenteritis, or other conditions where fungi and bacteria grow unchecked.

GET ORGANIZED AND IMPROVE WORKPLACE PRODUCTIVITY Many working professionals aspire to be as productive as possible. In working environments where employees are forced to wear many hats, efficiency can help workers meet their deadlines and get tasks accomplished. Organization can help professionals keep track of their work assignments and stay on schedule. Staying organized does not come naturally to everyone, and those finding it difficult to juggle various assignments at once can try the following strategies to stay organized and increase their productivity. Stop multitasking. While it can seem counterintuitive for people with a lot on their plates to stop multitasking, researchers at the University of Utah found that performance suffers when people try to do more than one thing at a time. While researchers discovered that a small percentage of people they dubbed “supertaskers” were capable of multitasking without adversely affecting their performance, the vast majority of people should avoid trying to tackle more than one task at a time. Professionals can work on different projects throughout the day, but allot time for each project rather than trying to work on several at once. Schedule each day. Establishing a schedule and making it as accessible as possible is another way to stay organized and increase productivity. Professionals can make use of scheduling apps on their tablets or smartphones, even setting alerts so they do not forget about projects or meetings. Routinely check the schedule throughout the day, marking off tasks as they’re completed. Cut back on time spent in meetings. A 2014 survey from AtTask conducted by Harris Poll reported that American workers at companies with 1,000 employees or more spend just 45 percent of their workdays tending to their primary job duties. Survey participants reported spending 40 percent of their time in meetings, tending to administrative tasks and dealing with interruptions. In lieu of in-person meetings, professionals can discuss projects via mass emails, which can be a much more efficient means to organizing and discussing a project than sitting in a room several times per week. Take breaks throughout the workday. Busy professionals may feel as though they don’t have time for breaks during a typical workday. But such breaks can benefit workers in ways they might be unaware. For example, the Association for Psychological Science notes that research has shown that building breaks into a workday helps professionals stay sharp and productive. And when workers take their breaks matters, too. Researchers at Baylor University discovered that mid-morning breaks were more beneficial than late afternoon breaks. Staying organized and increasing productivity at work go hand in hand. Professionals tasked with juggling multiple responsibilities can employ various strategies to be better organized and get more done in less time.

EMPLOYMENT: THE NEXT STEP AFTER GRADUATION Graduation is an exciting time in the lives of students. After years in the classroom preparing for life after school, graduation marks a time when students are finally ready to enter the “real world” and land their first professional job. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics advises that earning a college degree can greatly improve a person’s chance of landing a job. The more education a person receives, the lower his or her prospects of being unemployed become. The BLS said that, as of 2014, individuals with a bachelor’s degree could earn on average $1,101 per week, compared to $668 for persons with high school diplomas. Those with bachelor’s degrees had a 3.5 percent unemployment rate compared to 6 percent for those with only high school diplomas. The National Center for Education Statistics estimates that roughly two million students earn bachelor’s degrees each year. Many others will go on to earn master’s or doctorates before entering the workforce. As the economy continues to improve, job prospects follow suit. According to a job outlook from the National Association of Colleges and Employers, employers had plans to hire 8.3 percent more new college graduates in 2015 than in 2014. The growth of businesses and the rising rate of retiring Baby Boomers has spurred employment prospects. Landing a job post-graduation requires diligence on the part of new grads. EMPLOYMENT

WAYS TO INCREASE PRODUCTIVITY AT WORK Stop multitasking. Psychologists have determined that multitasking can bog down productivity. According to the American Psychological Association, the mind and brain were not designed for heavy-duty multitasking. Individuals think they’re getting more done, but they may not be handling tasks effectively. Instead, focus on one job at a time and only move on once it is completed.
