Generation Two Partners with The Strong National Museum of Play to Support Social and Emotional Health in Children During Pandemic By Ashley Cross, EdD

T

he COVID-19 pandemic is causing children to miss valuable social and emotional learning opportunities that come from school, camps, and other activities. To address this growing concern, Generation Two (G2), is adapting the program they bring to local schools to support children and parents as they stay home and practice social distancing. The Please Play Campaign will help families address child development needs. “During the pandemic, children and parents had to quickly adapt to home learning. Everyone is doing the best they can, but it’s impossible to replicate the social bonds and extra support young children are used to receiving from teachers, counselors, social workers, and G2 buddies,” explained G2 Executive Director Ashley Cross, EdD. “We developed the Please Play Campaign to help address a need many local families are feeling right now.” The Please Play Campaign will connect children and families with resources to strengthen interpersonal connections and build social-emotional strength through child-directed play. The Strong National Museum of Play will have an integral role in the campaign, helping to create video, written content, and webinar events. “Play is an investment in children’s social-emotional strength and resiliency, providing joy and personal connection,” explained Bruce Gilberg, Ph.D., founder of G2. “Children have lost the connection with so many adults they are used to seeing regularly. However, right now, we can work to strengthen the relationships children have at home, helping to restore feelings of control and emotional security.” The child-directed play model is the foundation of the original program G2 has been bringing to local schools for 17 years. The original G2 model brings volunteers (called G2 buddies) to schools for one-on-one child-directed play. While that concept is not an option during the pandemic, the Please Play Campaign is an opportunity to help children and parents cope while feeling reassured and nurtured.

• More information about future events and resources through the Please Play Campaign. Organizations interested in partnering with Generation Two or providing G2 Please Play Workshops at their agencies can contact Ashley Cross by email at Ashley.Cross@g2rochester. org. About Generation Two (G2) Generation Two dynamically links civic engagement, child-directed, intergenerational friendships within elementary schools, and child advocacy to strengthen the young child’s social and emotional life. Generation Two was developed at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government by psychologist Dr. Bruce Gilberg. Since its founding, G2 has brought more than 1,500 volunteers to local school districts, including Fairport, East Rochester, and the Rochester City School District. Learn more at G2rochester.org.

Enjoy this article? Check out this week’s other great stories online at www.gvpennysaver.com:

“Play calms children and results in less stress for them and their parents,” Gilberg continued. “That’s especially critical during this time of extraordinary anxiety. Play is a powerful coping strategy that helps both kids and adults.” The Please Play Campaign’s online resources are now available to everyone at PleasePlay.org free of charge. On the site, parents will find: • Access to videos and guidance to use child-directed play to nurture development and build social-emotional strength. • Handouts that provide simple “tips” for child-directed play.

HOMETOWN

BANISH MOSQUITOES FROM YOUR YARD Inspect property for hidden pockets of water. While bird baths, pet bowls and kiddie pools are easy to find, homeowners may be unknowingly hosting mosquito breeding grounds elsewhere on their properties. For example, tarps used to cover pools, automobiles or grills that are not tightly secured can fold up, creating pockets where rain water can collect and give mosquitoes somewhere to breed. Mosquitoes also may use gutters to breed, so homeowners should routinely inspect and clean their gutters during spring and summer.

While many people visit yard sales looking for antiques or other unique items that likely can’t be found at traditional retailers, yard sale shoppers should know that their efforts can be great for the environment. Shoppers can browse through gently used items that no longer serve utility for the seller but may be just what buyers are looking for. Rather than throwing out belongings that get little use, people who organize a sale are reducing their contributions to nearby landfills.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We were camping this weekend, and on our last day in the woods my dog “Jumper” had a run-in with a skunk. He is really rank. I tried washing him off in the lake, but it didn’t seem to help the smell at all. We had to drive home with this incredibly bad smell permeating the car. Jumper smells almost as bad today as he did on Sunday. How can I get rid of the odor? -- Rick in Burlington, Vermont DEAR RICK: That odor really lingers! Good job trying to wash Jumper’s coat in the lake as soon as possible; that may have helped a little bit. You’ll have to use a bit of chemistry to remove the oily skunk spray. Tomato juice is recommended by many people, and it does have some effect because it’s a little bit acidic and can break up some of the oils. Its aroma also helps mask the skunk scent, at least temporarily. Another cleaning recipe, found on American Kennel Club’s website (www.AKC. org), mixes baking soda with mild detergent and household hydrogen peroxide (3% strength). The foaming mixture can be worked into your dog’s coat, left on for about five minutes and then rinsed away. With any solution or recipe you use, be careful to not let it get into Jumper’s eyes, ears or nose. Many of the ingredients are irritants that can cause a lot of discomfort. Deodorizing your car will take some extra effort. You can gently clean the upholstery, floor mats and headliner with a cloth dipped in a solution of water and baking soda. The baking soda will dry to a haze and needs to be vacuumed off. Follow up with a shampoo formulated for car interiors.

Many people experiment with fireworks on their own, but that can be dangerous. According to the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission, thousands of people are injured by fireworks in the United States each year. Whether purchased legally or on the black market, fireworks pose a considerable threat. Fireworks purchased on the black market may be especially dangerous, as they likely were not subjected to government regulations and inspections. While summer might be the season of fireworks, it’s important that people who intend to incorporate fireworks into their summer festivities keep safety in mind at all times. The following are a handful of ways to ensure this summer is both fun and safe. •

Attend a municipal firework display rather than hosting your own. Professionals follow certain safety protocols that private citizens are unfamiliar with, and there is often a considerable distance between audiences and professional fireworks displays.

Exercise caution if fireworks are legal where you live. Maintain a safe distance from fireworks at all times and never allow children to handle fireworks.

Read and strictly adhere to manufacturer’s instructions.

Light only one firework at a time, and never attempt to re-ignite a firework that doesn’t light the first time around.

Do not carry fireworks in your pocket.

Do not shoot fireworks out of metal or glass containers.

Always wear safety glasses when lighting fireworks, and keep water or a fire extinguisher around for emergencies.

Simplify vacations and savor the fun Keep your itinerary flexible. Scheduling right down to the minute can remove the fun of the trip. Leave opportunities to just sit and enjoy your surroundings. Perhaps other members of the family or traveling party have their own ideas for entertainment. A rigid timeline can make the vacation seem more like a commitment rather than an opportunity to let loose and stop watching the clock.

EQUAL HOUSING OPPORTUNITY

CREATE A SALE-WORTHY SHOWPLACE The sentiment “don’t judge a book by its cover” can be applied to many situations. When it comes to selling their homes, homeowners should remember this adage as they prepare their homes for prospective buyers. Homeowners who want to make their properties stand out can take the following steps.

Open House

De-personalize the home. Homeowners fill their spaces with family photos, heirlooms, personal interests, and other conversation pieces. Prospective buyers may not be able to see past personal belongings and may even be distracted by them. For example, buyers who have strong beliefs about animal welfare may not buy a home displaying hunting trophies. Remove personalized items where possible, replacing them with generic items.

August 8 & 9th • 1-4pm

Improve the exterior. HGTV says that curb appeal is crucial to making a strong first impression. A messy or lackluster landscape can turn buyers away even before they reach the front door. Mow the lawn and make sure shrubbery has been trimmed. Seasonal potted flowers and plants can help make the house look polished. Repair cracks or damaged walkways, and consider a fresh coat of paint on trim around windows and doors. Pressure-wash siding if necessary.

For Sale by Owner

Put things in storage. Rent a storage unit to house items that can make a home appear cluttered. Clean out closets and cabinets, so that when buyers “snoop” during appointments or open houses they see orderly storage areas. If closets are brimming with stuff, buyers may assume the house doesn’t have enough storage space and move on.

Make it light and bright. Open up all of the drapes and blinds, and turn on overhead lights so the house is well-lit. Add table lamps or other fixtures to especially dim rooms. Create a hotel experience. Forbes suggests making bathrooms look like a spa. Stack a few pretty washcloths tied with ribbon, add some scented candles and faux plants and buy bathmats and towels in coordinating tones. Remove extraneous items from kitchen counters and replace them with vases of flowers. In addition, set up dining spaces as if one were sitting down to a meal, and ensure appliances are sparkling clean. Use common ‘scents.’ Skip the fish, bacon or other aromatic meals for a few days, as such foods can leave lingering aromas. Baked goods, vanilla and cinnamon might make for more appealing scents. Making a home sell fast involves preparation and the knowledge that buyers are often greatly influenced by their first impressions.

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Here’s a great tip when making crème brûlée: Make sure you use a wide, shallow dish. The size is important, because if it’s too deep, the center won’t set, and if it’s too small you won’t get that great cracking top!

Discover The Human Touch In Hearing Technology

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

A Healthy Diet Includes Omega-3 and Omega-6 ---

Lakeville 3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2 Henrietta 20 Finn Road, Suite C

DEAR DR. ROACH: It seems that eating a healthy diet with an emphasis on nuts and seeds, fruits, vegetables and grains is the best choice for anyone. It’s been well-documented that omega-6 is inflammatory, whereas foods containing omega-3 are not. It seems to me that we should be consuming foods that have more omega-3 in them. The only problem is that, from my research, all nuts and seeds with the exception of chia and flaxseeds have a much higher ratio of the omega-6 to the omega-3. This appears to be the case with most foods, no matter which food group they are in. How can any of the healthy foods be beneficial when so much more of the “bad fats” are being ingested? -- Anon. ANSWER: Dietary fats are categorized into four groups: monounsaturated, polyunsaturated, saturated and trans-saturated. It is accepted that monounsaturated fats have a healthy effect, reducing heart disease risk, while trans-saturated fats are clearly harmful. The effect of saturated fats on health is mixed, but those that come from processed meat increase heart disease and diabetes risk. Saturated fat overall has little effect on heart disease risk, but swapping saturated fat with unsaturated fats (both polyunsaturated and monounsaturated) appears to reduce heart disease risk. Polyunsaturated fats are categorized into the omega-3 family and the omega-6 family. I also have read in many places that omega-6 fats are “bad fats,” causing inflammation. The best evidence, a 2014 review of all controlled trials published, showed that omega-6 fats are NOT inflammatory and that they DECREASE risk of heart disease compared with meat-based saturated fats. We should be consuming both omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fats, mostly from plant sources. The data support that nuts and seeds are foods we should be eating more of, but we also should be eating good sources of omega-3, including fatty fish, the chia and flaxseeds you mentioned, as well as walnuts and canola oil. Most people have to work harder to get omega-3 oils but get plenty of omega-6. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have recently started transitioning to a plant-based diet for preventative health reasons. While discussing the benefits of nuts and seeds with a dietitian, they had a disclaimer that flax seed can interfere with medications and to eat them two hours before or one hour after taking medications. I would not sit down and eat a handful of flax seeds, but now I am afraid to use them in the meals I prepare at all. Can you help me make a good decision in using them? -- J.E. ANSWER: For people eating reasonable amounts (like a handful or two) of flax seeds as part of a meal, it is unlikely that they would interfere with medications enough to cause any significant problem, for most medications. There are two situations that might merit concern: In powerful anti-clotting agents, such as clopidogrel, flax seeds might prompt increased activity. Secondly, flax seeds may lower blood sugar a small amount. In combination with insulin or oral diabetes drugs, the blood sugar could possibly dip lower than expected. I doubt either of these interactions is likely to cause harm, but it is reasonable to discuss with your doctor if you are on one of the classes of medications mentioned. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. MINIMIZE DARK CIRCLES UNDER THE EYES Makeup can help counter the look of dark shadows and pigmentation around the eyes. Use a shade that is opposite the color of the circles to camouflage them. For example, use orange-yellow tones to combat blue-purple shading under the eyes. Makeup artists also advise applying concealer in the shape of a triangle. That way a person is creating a light arrow that draws attention to the bright part of her eyes.

ENJOYING THRILLS AT AMUSEMENT PARKS One of the more beloved ways for thrill-seekers to spend a day off is to visit an amusement park. Amusement parks take many shapes. Some may be small, traveling carnivals, while others are large parks that draw visitors from all over the country. Amusement parks typically feature hair-raising rides, games of skill, tasty food, and gift shops. That means there’s something for everyone. Although they may seem like a relatively modern concept, amusement parks, fairs and carnivals actually have storied histories. In fact, historians say that carnivals and local fairs have been around since the Middle Ages. According to History.com, amusement parks, once dubbed “pleasure gardens” and “trolly parks,” sprung up across the United States and Europe in the 19th century.

585-802-1544 DID YOU KNOW? According to WorldAtlas.com, the largest city park in the world is Bosque de la Primavera in Guadalajara, Mexico. At 74,132 acres, Bosque de la Primavera is more than 14,000 acres larger than the world’s second largest city park, Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa. Bosque de la Primavera features the Rio Caliente, a geothermal river, and is home to a massive nature reserve inhabited by wild animals. The largest city park in the United States and fifth largest such park in the world is the McDowell Sonoran Preserve in Scottsdale, Arizona. The McDowell Sonoran Preserve includes 180 miles of hiking trails within its 27,800 acres. And while it might be one of the most recognizable city parks in the world, New York City’s Central Park is not counted among the world’s 20 largest city parks, despite estimates that it draws more than 40 million visitors each year. However, it is one of the most visited places in the United States. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

POTENTIAL CULPRITS BEHIND THINNING GRASS Leaf spot The Center for Agriculture, Food and the Environment at the University of Massachusetts Amherst notes that leaf spot diseases affect both cool- and warm-season turfgrasses. Various fungi can cause leaf spot. Symptoms and the timing of the appearance of leaf spot will vary depending on which fungi is causing the problem. For example, bipolaris sorokiniana, which affects grasses in warm, wet summer months, produces small spots that are dark purple to black. Dreschslera poae is another fungi that causes leaf spot, and it also produces dark purple to black spots. However, it tends to appear in the spring when the weather is cool and moist. Understanding the different fungi and when they typically strike can help homeowners identify what is causing their grass to thin. In such situations, professional landscapers can be invaluable resources as well.

Spring and summer are synonymous with increased hours of sunlight, warm temperatures and, oftentimes, an increased reliance on water to feed recreational pursuits and lawn and garden needs. The Water Information Program states that 3.9 trillion gallons of water are consumed in the United States each month and the average person uses 176 gallons of water per day. Water conservation may be essential when the risk for weather-related drought looms. Practicing year-round conservation efforts can help ensure smart usage of local watersheds, lakes and reservoirs and help maintain these water sources for years to come. It also helps the average person reduce his or her carbon footprint while saving people a little money along the way.

What is the best product to grow grass? If I remove some tree roots that are poking through the ground will that kill the tree? Laurie O. There are numerous grass seeds and seed blends available in a wide range of prices. A Northeast blend is best for our area. In our northern cool-humid region, lawn grass must be perennial, winter hardy, able to withstand frequent mowing, and relatively disease free. A typical lawn mixture might be something like 65% Kentucky bluegrass, 20% fine leaf fescue, 15% perennial ryegrass. This type of blend is more expensive than seed that is all or primarily ryegrass. Kentucky bluegrass is the predominant high-quality lawn grass for our climate. It is the best species for full sun, it forms good sod because it

spreads with rhizomes (underground lateral stems), and can withstand frequent mowing and foot traffic. It takes about 2 weeks to germinate and 6-8 weeks to produce dense sod. Perennial ryegrass is a popular component of grass seed mixtures because it germinates quickly, often in 2-4 days, providing a uniform lawn in about 2 weeks. Fine-leaf fescues are well adapted to infertile or acidic soil and can tolerate shaded conditions, but cannot withstand heavy traffic. Therefore, a blend provides the best qualities of each variety for an all-purpose lawn grass. Follow directions on the seed bag for seeding process and rates (lbs/1000 sq ft). The hot dry summertime is not the optimum time for grass seeding, but if you must, then mulch with straw and water (sprinkler works best) daily. When you begin mowing, leave clippings on the lawn for the nutrients

they provide. Fertilize in the fall with a sure that the tree remains stable and fertilizer that has a high percentage of healthy before taking out more. The fewer above ground roots you remove, slow release nitrogen. If tree roots are causing disruption in the less likely you are to damage the your lawn, it is okay to prune a few tree. small roots away, but care must be taken not to injure the tree. Do not cut away any root that is more than 2 inches in diameter. A rule of thumb is to measure the diameter of the tree about 4 ft up from the ground and prune out only roots that are 3-5 times that distance away from the trunk (2í trunk diameter, go out 6-10í to take out above ground roots). Never take out more than 20% of the roots showing, then wait a year or two to be

It would be easier and less potentially damaging to mulch. Use a 3-4 inch layer of mulch around such trees with exposed roots that make mowing more difficult. Do not form a “volcano” of mulch which seems to be too popular in the landscape and can do severe damage to the tree.

Suzanne’s has no paid staff and we do not receive any income from insurance, medicare, etc. Churches, businesses, and individuals have been so generous to us. During this pandemic Suzanne’s has been able to continue our mission and stay open. People have made and donated masks to us so we can continue to follow the required safety procedures. Suzanne’s is very thankful to all of you who have helped us continue our mission! Suzanne’s is looking for caring people to join our Resident Care volunteers. Join us; you won’t regret it. Volunteering feeds the soul. No need for any medical background, just a caring heart! Email Suzanne Schuster at suzannescch@yahoo.com, or call (585) 739-0306

WALKING Just want to say thank you to the kind, considerate, and unselfish drivers who slow down a little bit and move over a little bit as you drive by us while we are walking along the edge of a country road where there are no sidewalks to use. To all the other drivers, it would not kill you to slow down a little bit and move over a little bit When you drive by us walking because it could kill us.

IRRESPONSIBLE Teenagers really need to be more cautious at nighttime, especially around midnight. I’ve been seeing teenagers walking around and riding skateboards at nighttime, especially around 12:30-1 o’clock at night without any reflective gear or flashlights. They are wearing dark clothing, and drivers cannot see them. People who are driving may not see them due to the teenagers’ irresponsibility. Parents shouldn’t be allowing their teenagers to be out this late. Both teenagers and parents should be more responsible. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

HABITAT VOLUNTEERS Thank you to all the volunteers for Habitat for Humanity of Livingston County for coming out last Saturday. You generously gave of your time and talents to build a basement for the home that already means so much to my children and I. We are so incredibly grateful. May God bless you all!

THANK YOU ROCK STARS To the individuals leaving beautiful painted rocks with positive quotes around the local parks. They are so fun to find and to place someplace else for someone else to find.

CEMETERY UPKEEP I cannot believe the way the [local] Cemetery looks. There were not any American flags at the gravesides of service men and women for the Memorial Day holiday. The lawn needs to be mowed and weed wacked, the flowers trash bin needs to be emptied, and the American Flag at the entrance of the cemetery is worn and tattered. It is just sad; it is a beautiful cemetery. I am not sure if there is a group who does this, or is it volunteer? If it is volunteer, then maybe more volunteers are needed, if you did need more volunteers, maybe post something looking for help.

your family and friends to make sure they’re using shades and drapes, fans and AC, are drinking plenty of water, and are not experiencing heat exhaustion. Help people at home stay cool.

HEAT IS ALSO DANGEROUS This hot humid weather is dangerous for aged, disabled, and medically impaired individuals. Due to Covid-19, the cooling libraries, community rooms and restaurants are unavailable. Please check on

WHAT A GIFT!Ê What a generous gift!! Thank you to the woman at Wegmans Geneseo who paid for my son’s groceries when he was short of money...no questions asked.

PAINTED TRASH IS TRASH Painted rocks are trash and litter. If you like them, fine, but keep them in your own yard, not in public places. STOLEN SOLAR HYDRANGEA This is a time when everyone should be thankful for what they have. I work very hard for everything that I have. I enjoy gardening and my yard. I am select when I choose any decorations for my yard. I take great pride in how my yard looks at night. I have many solar lights, that brighten up my yard. I bought an expensive, unique, beautiful purple hydrangea that was solar and had very pretty lights. Why did someone feel the need to steal from my backyard? First of all, who is creeping in my backyard? That is

FEELING FORTUNATE… That we live in a state where our cases of C-19 have decreased, where most people are considerate of the rules that got us to this point, and for the excellent health care system we benefit from in this area. That you to ALL Front-Line Workers!! THANK YOU TEACHERS! Thank you to all the teachers and administrative staff for their hard work and planning for the upcoming school year. my privacy. The lights are for me to enjoy, not you! You are a thief, and you disgust me. I hope you enjoy my light. Don’t forget, karma will get you when you least expect it! WHY LOOK AT COLOR? A person matters because God loves them, and they matter to Him. We just need to acknowledge God more, and each of us will feel like we indeed do matter to Him. It sounds simplistic, but why make it complicated? Have the faith of a child to know God is good and live like God matters to you. Treat others the way you want to be treated. It isn’t about what you look like on the outside, but what your heart looks like on the inside. MISSING POLITICAL SIGN How juvenile and spiteful is the person who took our political sign from our yard in Victor! This is stealing and against the law. This shows the perpetrator has little integrity.
