AUTOMOTIVE

Inspect t ires bef ore road t rips Give tires the eye test. The eye test can be an effective and quick w ay to detect tire damage. Uneve n w ear may be indicative of insufficient tire pressure or an alignment problem. Uneven w ear also may indicate t he vehicle is experiencing problems w ith its steering or suspension. But many times uneven w ear can be remedied by a simple tire rotation, so take your vehicle to your mechanic if you notice uneven w ear. ADDRESS WINDSHIELD DAMAGE PROMPTLY Windshields are designed to protect drivers and their vehicles from wind and other natural elements while the cars are in motion. Windshields are made from tempered glass, which is processed by controlled thermal or chemical treatments to increase its strength compared to normal glass. While relatively strong for a pieces of glass, windshields are not impervious to damage. All it takes is a single rock or piece of road debris to be kicked up from the roadway and hit the windshield to cause a problem. Every day, motorists encounter pebbles or other small missiles that bounce up from the road and come in contact with their windshields. Many deflect with no problem, but under high speeds, debris can cause chips, dings, and even cracks in the windshield. Cracks easily spread from road vibration and heat and can compromise the integrity of the windshield. If your car’s windshield is cracked and it shatters during a collision, you and your passengers are at great risk of injury. In addition, police officers can write tickets if windshields appear to be unsafe. So it’s in drivers’ best interests to repair damaged windshields promptly. Drivers may be able to repair small dings themselves with a do-it-yourself windshield kit available at automotive retailers. If a crack is less than six to 12 inches long, it can probably be repaired as well. However, more significant damage will require that the entire windshield be replaced.

How t o prot ect your car’s resale value Periodically examine the vehicle history report. Today’s preow ned c ar buyers know to ask for a vehicle history report before buying a c ar. If your vehic le history report c ontains any suspic ious or inac c urate information, you may be forced to sell the car for less than it’s w orth or delay selling until you can have any issues corrected. That w on’t necessarily happen overnight, but you can avoid dealing w ith a host of issues all at onc e by periodically examining the vehicle history report. Any discrepancies on the report can be brought to the attention of your insurance company, w ho can then w ork w ith you to correct the issues and restore your vehicle’s reputation.

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * A tip from our good friend A.S.M.: “When buying berries packed in a basket, check the bottom to see if there’s a juice stain. This means that the strawberries at the bottom are crushed.” * “Here’s a great tip for use at bath time with baby: I have a sippy cup that changes color when the drink is hot. Oddly enough, it changes at the perfect temperature for baby’s bath. So, I fill the tub and toss in the cup. When the cup starts to change back to its original color (blue), I know the bathwater is not too hot. I always swish the water around and check with my wrist also, but it is a good visual clue to check.” -- P.B. in Idaho * “To remove muffins or rolls from a pan, set it on an old, damp towel for a minute. The steam must loosen the bottoms because they just slide right out. I thank my mom for this tip.” -J.R. via e-mail * When heating milk in a pan, “seal” the pan with unsalted butter to keep the milk from filming and sticking to the sides. Lightly coat all sides of the pan with butter, and the milk is sure to not leave scum, which can take away from the rich flavor of the milk. * Do you find yourself throwing away unused and spoiled fruits and veggies at the end of the week? Try setting aside time after you come home from the grocery store for prepping fruits and vegetables. Pre-bag snack sizes of carrots, celery, strawberries, grapes, cantaloupe and apples. Pre-cut veggies for meals to make later in the week. Slice tomatoes and onions for sandwiches, and tear and separate lettuce for salads. They all make great, healthy treats, and having them ready to go makes it easier to get that five a day! GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Maggie Dempsey of Avon is Crowned as the 2020 International United Miss Teen By Stephanie Dempsey

M

aggie Dempsey was crowned the 2020 International United Miss Teen on July 17, 2020 at the Seaview Resort in Galloway, New Jersey. Maggie competed in the week-long event with young ladies from across the country in the areas of evening gown, personal introduction, personal interview and high fashion runway. Maggie was also the overall winner for the Top Model and Casual Wear awards in the Teen division. Maggie was a 2019 recipient of the E. Philip Saunders Endowed Business Scholarship at the Rochester Institute of Technology where she is currently a sophomore majoring in supply chain management. Maggie is a member of the business fraternity Delta Sigma Pi and the American Cancer Society on Campus Club. Maggie is also actively involved in her Glow-Getter movement, #growingwhilegrowing , where she encourages others to work hard to achieve Goals, to constantly Grow and to keep Glowing from the inside out. International United Miss (IUM) is a scholarshipstyle pageant system dedicated to the girls and women who represent it. They pride themselves in recognizing the incredible accomplishments of their Queens and competitors, achieved both on and off the pageant stage. The experience directors (who together have over 35 years of dedication to the pageant community) along with their staff, have worked diligently to create a pageant organization focused on the competition aspects that really work the best and that delegates enjoy the most. Beauty is not only on the outside, but the inside as well, which is why they have based their system around the aspects of personal judge’s interview, community service and involvement, as well as poise Maggie Dempsey, and personality during 2020 International United Miss on-stage competitions. The Dempsey family have lived in Avon for 18 years. At one time they had owned a small farm in Avon where they raised chickens and a rare breed of sheep called Hog Island Sheep. Maggie has one brother, Sean, who recently returned home from serving with the National Guard in

* Realizing that surgical antiseptics were marketable to just a small group of professionals, the makers of Listerine began to market the product as a floor cleaner -- as well as a cure for gonorrhea. While we won’t necessarily vouch for the latter, in a pinch, just add a capful for every gallon of water and mop away. Other uses include dandruff elimination, deodorant, a numbing agent for toothache pain and tick removal. * A 1938 issue of “Mademoiselle” magazine had a handy bit of advice for college gals seeking suitors: have your mom send you some flowers to trick all the boys into thinking they have competition. SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles

Getting Through the Day Some random thoughts for getting through the day. Have you heard of custom puzzles? They’re available at a number of places online. (Read the reviews before you order and look for U.S. companies.) Select a favorite vacation or family photo, decide on the size of the puzzle and the number of pieces, send in your order and you’ll get back all the pieces to create a puzzle of that image. Call the company first to be sure of the details. Buy stamps by mail and stay out of the post office. Ask the local post office to have your mail carrier bring out a stamp order form and envelope. Check off the ones you want, write a check payable to Postmaster and slide it into the envelope. Leave it in your outgoing mail and within a few days your stamps will be delivered to you. If you miss playing chess with others, you can play online. See www.chess.com/play/computer and play against the computer. Better yet, play against a pal using an old-school method: set up a board on each end and send your moves to each other via email. On the other hand, too many people are trying to cut their own hair nowadays since too many salons and barber shops are closed. If you think you want to cut your own hair, don’t. If you really insist you need to cut your hair and haven’t done it before, go online to YouTube and watch a few dozen how-to videos about cutting hair. Then rethink your plan again. Whatever you do, don’t use regular kitchen or paper scissors. If you have to do this, invest in proper haircutting shears.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

D id You Know ? If you have psoriasis, an autoimmune skin condition marked by red, flaky patches on the body, you also could be at risk for a certain type of arthritis. Psoriatic arthritis, w hich causes stiffness, sw elling and pain in and around the joints, affects up to 30 percent of people w ith psoriasis, says the National Psoriasis Foundation. W hile psoriatic arthritis can develop at any time, it is most common in people betw een the ages of 30 and 50. This type of arthritis can develop slow ly or come on quickly and be severe. Just like psoriasis itself, psoriatic arthritis tends to go through periods of flare-up and remission. Typically, the skin condition precedes the joint disease in 85 percent of patients. Keep in mind that a severe case of psoriasis w ill not necessarly translate into a severe case of arthritis. Psoriatic arthritis may be treated like other forms of arthritis. Doctors may prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs, antirheumatic drugs, exercise, and complementary therapies. Those w ho have psoriasis and have begun to experience joint pain and stiffness should talk to a doctor about potential therapies.

Do not set air conditioner thermostats at lower than normal temperatures when turning them on. The DOE notes that setting thermostats at lower than normal temperatures when turning air conditioners on will not cool homes any faster than setting them at typical temperatures. Such a strategy will only lead to excessive energy consumption and higher energy bills.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR DURING ROOF INSPECTIONS Gutters and downspouts should be in good condition. A roof is the sum of its parts, and that includes downspouts and gutters. If the gutters are clogged or damaged, they cannot direct water away from the house properly. Snow, leaves and other debris needs to be cleared from gutters to help them function at optimal capacity.

WHAT’S YOUR ADVANCE CARE PLAN?

Roof Leaks?

(NAPSI) — No matter your stage of life, it’s always a good idea to have a long-range care plan in place. A good way to begin is to talk candidly with your family and friends. By starting the conversation, you can express your views on treatment, relay your care preferences and communicate who will make decisions on your behalf. This process of advance-care planning can help ensure your wishes are carried out and bring peace of mind to those you love.

Discover The Human Touch In Hearing Technology

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Pulmonary Fibrosis Needs Exact Diagnosis ---

Lakeville 3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2 Henrietta 20 Finn Road, Suite C

DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband was recently diagnosed with mild to moderate pulmonary fibrosis. His mother died from pulmonary fibrosis. From what we have read there is no cure, only palliative care. The thought of doing nothing to try to stop the progression is totally unacceptable when there have been such successes with immunotherapy and stem cells. Would he receive more aggressive treatment going to a pulmonary fibrosis care center that has lung disease programs? -- C.D. ANSWER: There are several diseases that may cause fibrosis of the lung, so having an exact diagnosis made by an expert is critical for getting the right treatment. The most common type of pulmonary fibrosis is called “idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis” (it also has been called “usual interstitial pneumonia” and “cryptogenic fibrosing alveolitis”), and I am going to discuss that diagnosis. The cause of IPF is unknown (both “idiopathic” and “cryptogenic” mean “of unknown cause”), but cigarette smoking is a risk factor. It is usually diagnosed in people who are their 50s and 60s, although some familial cases may come on earlier. IPF can run in families. Although it is a rare disease, it seems to be on the rise. The major symptoms are cough and shortness of breath. There is no cure for IPF, but there are treatments available. Two drugs, pirfenidone and nintedanib, are approved for use in the U.S. and Canada. Both of them slow progression of lung disease, reduce exacerbations and have been proven to reduce mortality from the condition, if only slightly. I am concerned that you and your husband apparently haven’t heard of these drugs. I strongly advise you get a referral to a center for lung disease in order to get your husband the best care. I found 35 IPF trials recruiting patients in the U.S. and six in Canada. A clinical trial will help scientists understand this condition as well as determine the best current treatment. You also can find out what centers have expertise on this condition by seeing where the trials are conducted at www.clinicaltrials.gov. The most aggressive treatment isn’t always the best, but you and your husband deserve to hear about all the options. The Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation can help you find experienced centers for treating this condition. You can find them online at www.pulmonaryfibrosis.org. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My niece recently was diagnosed with breast cancer. Radiation was recommended. Her mother said that first she’d have to boost her immune system. Is it possible to actually do that? -- P.P.L. ANSWER: Radiation is a common treatment after breast cancer surgery. It’s done to reduce the risk of recurrence, depending on the exact type of cancer. Boosting the immune system is a new adjunct for many types of cancer. There are several ways to do this: One is to genetically modify the patient’s own immune T-cells, but many other techniques are in trials now. However, if your niece’s mother is talking about supplements, I’d be cautious. Supplements that are promoted to boost the immune system generally are ineffective at doing so. Making sure your niece has proper nutrition, gets good sleep and experiences as little stress as is manageable are ways to prevent stress on the immune system. Everyone could benefit from those deceptively simple steps, but especially a person being treated for cancer. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. HOW TO ENCOURAGE KIDS TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR TEETH Parents of young children know that getting kids to brush their teeth can sometimes feel like pulling teeth. Kids have a long history of disliking dental care, which can frustrate parents who know the importance and long-lasting benefits of proper dental hygiene. While many youngsters may never excitedly run to the bathroom to brush their teeth, parents can try various approaches to get kids to embrace proper dental care. Start early. Parents should not hesitate to begin cleaning kids’ teeth once the first tooth appears. The earlier dental care is part of a child’s routine, the more likely he or she is to accept it as part of everyday life. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends using a softbristled brush with a small head. Ideally, use a toothbrush designed for infants, brushing teeth once per day at bedtime. The AAPD advises taking kids to visit a pediatric dentist when the first tooth appears, or no later than the child’s first birthday. Make it a group effort. Young children love to imitate their parents’ actions and behaviors, and moms and dads can use that adoration to their advantage when trying to get kids to brush their teeth. Brush teeth together as a family, making it seem like an enjoyable twice-daily activity. Get down on kids’ level and show them how to brush. If kids are resistant, engage them in conversation while brushing so they don’t even realize they’re cleaning away. Involve kids in choosing their dental care products. While parents should be mindful of the type of toothbrush their children use, always sticking with products recommended by their child’s pediatric dentist, let youngsters choose their toothbrush and toothpaste. Kids might prefer a particular flavor of toothpaste, and a colorful toothbrush with a favorite film or television character might make kids more enthusiastic and less fussy about brushing. Compliment kids after positive dental appointments. When pediatric dentist appointments go well, compliment children and express your pride in them for taking dental hygiene as seriously as they do.

REASONS TO SHOP FARMERS’ MARKETS Foods at farmers’ markets tend to be limited to in-season offerings. Some nutritionists suggest eating seasonally available foods is better for your body, because humans ate seasonal produce for thousands of years before shipping and refrigeration changed how people received the majority of their foods. In addition, many people feel that fresh, seasonal foods taste better than the alternatives. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

COMMON GRILLING MISTAKES Improper seasoning: Basting food with sugar-laden sauces and marinades too early can cause flare-ups and burning. Quick rubs can help lock in flavor, and then reserve the sauce for the last few minutes of grilling, says cookbook author Dave Martin.

GENESEO 2020 Genesee Valley Hunt Races Canceled Due to Covid-19 Situation: After much thought and deliberation, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 Genesee Valley Hunt Races, which were to take place October 10th. We share the disappointment of many who look forward to the Genesee Valley Hunt Races each year and appreciate that most will understand the necessity to cancel under the unprecedented situation of a global pandemic. Meanwhile, we’ll look forward to reconvening the Genesee Valley Hunt Races next year on October 9, 2021 with an event bigger and better than ever.

Keyboard-Loving Cat Sees Computer as Rival DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Whenever I’m videoconferencing from home, my cat insists on jumping into my lap and pawing at the screen and the keyboard. If I put him outside the room, he will meow loudly and nonstop until I let him back in. Once the call is finished, he quiets down and goes away. To my co-workers, this is just a funny distraction, but I worry that it will have a negative impression on clients. How can I calm him down? -Melanie in Pittsburgh DEAR MELANIE: This is a tough one that many cat owners have faced. And now that so many of us are exclusively working from home, it’s going to continue -- unless you take some proactive steps. Cats jump onto your keyboard because they know it gets your attention. They’re not trying to figure out how to write social media posts. They just want you to pay as much attention to them as you do to the laptop screen. And locking a cat out of the room can trigger separation anxiety or just plain frustration that they can’t get in to be with you. Try this: Before a video call, give your cat 10 to 20 minutes of undivided attention. Pet him, play with his favorite toys, scratch his belly. This may help stop or reduce the number of times he jumps into your lap. Use positive reinforcement to teach your cat to do more of what you want and less of the things you don’t want him to do. To learn more about this training method, go to napahumane.org and search for “cats, positive reinforcement training.” Its basic premise is to reward your cat when he does something right. Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner. com

Every day is a new beginning. Take a deep breath, smile & start again. TOBY LOVES WAG-N-WASH Our long-haired German Shepherd is in love with the staff at Wag-N-Wash in Livonia. Tami and her team do a terrific job every time on “man’s best friend” and quickly too! This last time, Toby brought with him a little ‘ode de skunk’ perfume that they eradicated completely. Thanks!

the road. Later, you took the time to follow up in the parking lot after found them waiting at my car. You even chatted with me a bit while I calmed down. I cannot tell you how much your help meant. Thank you!

mom and dad’s cottage. They acted quickly and decisively to pull him out of the water before calling 911 because my dear friend knew she had to get him out of the water. With help from her son-in-law and others, they brought him back to life and saved my son. We never know when we will witness the hand of God, but He is and was in Honeoye that day and worked a miracle through my friends. Praise God Almighty!

TO THE KIND GENTLEMAN AT THE DEC As I was frantically looking for my pups who took off when I dropped their leash, you stopped to assure me you had not seen them near

HEROES The names of those involved are not important. They know who they are. They are my neighbors and friends I have known a long time. Last week, they were my heroes. My son, Troy, was found THANK YOU FOR face down, not breathing, and YOUR KINDNESS blue in the lake in front of my I want to thank the two ladies

INEFFICIENCY I am 39 years old. I have grown up around dogs, and my dad used to adopt from (local shelter) years ago. (Local shelter) now forces you to make an appointment to even enter the building. I saw two dogs on their website that I wanted to look at, so I made an appointment that put me a week out. By the day of the appointment, the two dogs I was interested in were already adopted. The whole point of making the appointment was to view these dogs. What a completely inefficient way of conducting your operations, and don’t you dare blame it on coronavirus. I don’t appreciate having my time wasted. Am I left to assume I have to make an appointment and hope there happens to be a dog I want at that moment, or else I’m out of luck? You are making adoptions more difficult than they have to be!

ABUSING HOTELS AND MOTELS I manage a hotel in (local town) and want to vent about unacceptable behavior I’ve observed over the last 7 years. Local people, almost exclusively from (local city), will reserve a room by pooling money amongst 6-10 friends to afford the room. Once in the hotel, they play loud music, smoke, come in & out throughout the night, have parties, making excessive noise. They bring many non-guests to the swimming pool, and we’ve needed to shut down our pool on several occasions because of poor water quality. They have absolutely no consideration for our other valued guests. Here’s a suggestion to those trashing our hotels: stay at one of your friends’ houses, smoke, drink and make as much noise as you want. Don’t do it in a hotel!

IN RESPONSE TO NOSY NEIGHBOR Upon reading the post, I don’t feel that the person was nosy or spying. You also stated that the person makes the rules on his property. Well, in the times we live in, I think, in some ways, that is changing. As the Governor stated long ago, no one has the right to make anyone else sick with corona virus. They are enforcing wearing a mask, if you haven’t noticed, also social distancing. I would be disturbed if I saw neighbors, whomever, blatantly disobeying common sense things, such as social distancing, and the wearing of masks. That does not make a person nosy, just alert to what is going on in their surroundings. Disobeying such things as having a large group over your house, without social distancing, nor masks, can potentially be life threatening to the rest of us.

Page 24

that came to my aid after I fell in the parking lot of McDonalds in Dansville on August 5th. They were so kind, helpful and attentive. They got the store employee, blocked incoming traffic until the police and ambulance arrived. When I was placed into the ambulance, my husband went to get their names, and they were already gone. But I will never forget their kindness. As I now recover from a fractured hip and sprained wrist, thinking of them makes me

Smile!

MUSIC This is for “Turn down your music”. You really can’t complain much since it was during day. If it bothered you so much you should have gone over to ask them to turn it down in a nice way. And you have to consider that these days music may help a person deal with all that is going on. I know it does me at times. Also, that person may have a hearing loss you don’t know about. As for taste of music being different, everyone has a different taste of music they like. You can’t change that. That’s for sure. If it goes on into the night, then call the police.

GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS Take more time off. According to the “State of American Vacation 2016” report from Project: Time Off, American workers failed to use 658 million vacation days in 2015. Vacation is not just a time to get away, but a valuable, effective way for workers to recharge. The APA notes that avoiding the negative effects of chronic stress and burnout requires workers to take time away to replenish and return to their pre-stress level of functioning. Taking time off to disconnect from work and avoid thinking about work can be just what workers need to overcome their work-related stress. And plenty of workers have the time to take off; they just need to take it.

Workloads may be hefty on both fronts, and the pursuit of a healthy balance between home and career may seem like an unattainable goal. Stress can build from feelings of being pulled in too many directions. According to Mental Health America, stress can compromise a person’s ability to concentrate, lead to feelings of irritability or depression, negatively affect personal relationships, and weaken immune systems, increasing a person’s susceptibility to a variety of ailments. Research even indicates chronic stress may double a person’s risk of having a heart attack. The desire to have a fulfilling career and a full life at home is a goal shared by millions of people across the globe. But it’s important that one’s pursuit of such goals not come at the expense of personal health. Finding the right balance between work and family requires some maneuvering and practice, but it can be achieved with planning, organization and communication.

RELOCATING FOR A NEW JOB Emphasize organization. Much of the stress associated with relocating can be traced to the logistics of uprooting oneself and one’s family. Men and women who are unaccustomed to making lists may want to start, as doing so can help keep track of all the tasks that need to be completed before hitting the road. Various unique tasks, from canceling utilities to changing insurance policies, must be completed before moving, and it’s easy to lose track of what’s been done and what hasn’t. Maintaining a to-do list and checking off tasks as they’re completed can simplify the relocation process.

Interested person must be customer service-oriented, have an eye for detail, be able to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment, be a team player and good communicator. Appx. 25-30 hours/wk. Must be able to work between the hours of 7am-3pm, Mon., Wed. & Fri. and at least one weekend day. Interested applicant may apply online at www.honeoyefallsmarketplace.com.
