Avon American Legion Honors WWII Veteran Euphemia Blye By Amanda Dudek

Active Living 50+ ____________________24 Auctions & Antiques ____________________22 Faye Blye displays her award from the Avon American Legion, (l-r) Bill Blye, Faye Blye and Pam Blye

Automotive _____________________3

On Tuesday, July 16th, 2019, Marjorie A. Martin and other members of the Joseph Gallipeau Avon American Legion Post & American Auxiliary Unit #294 honored WWII Veteran Mrs. Euphemia “Faye” Blye, an Avon resident for over 20 years. The Legion members visited Faye Blye, recently of Harpers Park, to present her with an award recognizing her service. From 19441946, the now nearly 96-year-old Blye served in the Airforce as a PFC E-3 and was a part of the Women’s Army Corp, dissolved in 1976.

Body & Mind ____________________20 Classifieds ____________________33 Employment ____________________29 Garage Sales _____________________9

Faye Blye’s story of the first time she met her husband highlights her tough, feisty nature. “I was at a USO on base,” she began. “I went to play a song from the jukebox, and this man said, ‘Play number 5.” Her eyes twinkle as she continues. “I said, “Play it yourself! You have all those stripes; you make more money than me!’”

Give & Take ____________________12 Home Services ____________________16

The man, young Sergeant Kenneth “Ken” O. Blye, asked her to the movies, and she agreed. During the movie, however, she suddenly felt Ken Blye’s head fall to her shoulder. He was asleep and snoring so loudly people were staring. Spirited Faye pushed him away and moved, but the date wasn’t over yet. As Ken Blye took her home, it started to rain. “He gave her a poncho to hold over her head because the roof leaked!” Faye Blye’s youngest son, Bill Blye, said. After that, the two were inseparable.

Hometown Events ____________________26 Kidz Korner ____________________15 Pet Place ____________________23

“They were so cute- all of them,” Faye Blye recalled. “They were the nicest kids you’d ever want to meet. I loved them all, every one of them. They are all gone now.” Some of Blye’s loved ones have passed away-her husband Ken over 31 years ago and her oldest son Ken “Kip” Blye in a tragic car accident 11 years ago, but her family remains very close. Bill and Pam Blye live only minutes away, and her middle son Jim Blye and his wife Mary visit frequently. She also has several grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Bill and Pam Blye’s oldest son, Billy, is uniquely close to his grandmother. “Billy joined the Marines right out of high school,” said Bill Blye. “My mom gave him his grandfather’s dog tags for good luck, and he cherishes them to this day.” Recent years have held honors for Blye. Robert, the son of the French farmer who rescued Ken Blye, wrote a book about the experience. Nearly seven years ago, he invited Blye to visit his hometown. Accompanied by Jim and Mary Blye, she boarded a plane for the first time and flew to France. “They had big celebrations and gave her a key to the city,” shared Bill Blye. “She was in two newspapers. To them, my father was a hero because he came to liberate them.” “He was a hero,” affirmed Faye Blye. Last year, Blye participated in an Honor Flight accompanied by her daughter-in-law, Mary Blye. “That was wonderful,” she recalled. When asked how she felt when the Avon American Legion told her they would like to give her an award, Faye Blye replied with characteristic humility. “I thought, What for?,” she said. “But I appreciated it.” “We want her to know she is not forgotten,” said Marjorie A. Martin, adding that anyone wishing to send Faye Blye cards or letters may send them care of the Avon American Legion.

“My father was a radio gunner and was over France when the tail was shot off his B-17 Bomber,” said Bill Blye. “When he jumped out, the door slammed shut on his chute. He said, ‘Oh God, help me!’ and the door flew open. He was the last one out alive.” Fortunately, a French farmer retrieved Ken Blye and concealed him in a small room for about three weeks. Finally, he was smuggled out to the English by the French Underground.

Puzzle Answers ____________________21 Real Estate _____________________6 Sip & Dine _____________________4

Stateside, Faye Blye’s duties included checking men out to, and in from, service overseas. “It was hard,” she confided. “The people who came back were in such different condition. You felt so sorry for them all the time. We would go and stay with them for a couple of hours, you know? They were just so happy to have people around them.”

Vibes & Rants ____________________10

Then, Faye and Ken Blye left the service, married and moved to Massachusetts where Ken Blye had grown up, the third of fifteen children. “When they went to his house, lots of kids were playing outside,” said Bill Blye’s wife Pam. “She said, ‘Which of these are your brothers and sisters?’ He said, ‘All of them.’ The living room was filled with children. She said, ‘Which

of these are your brothers and sisters?’ He said, ‘All of them,’ and on it went.”

It is easy for motorists to take their tires for granted w hen everything is w orking correctly. W heels and suspension systems bear the w eight of cars and trucks and must bear the brunt of rough roads, pot holes and any additional obstacles, so some w ear and tear is to be expected. M any drivers know to monitor their tire pressure, but it’s also important to check for w orn treads and inspect tires for punctures or damage. Proper tire alignment and balance also is essential for a comfortable and smooth ride.

RIDESHARING SAFETY TIPS Confirm vehicle maintenance and inspections. Private individuals and some smaller ridesharing services drive fewer hours per week than many taxi companies. That means personal vehicles may be in better shape than taxis. Drivers must maintain their vehicles and have them inspected according to local regulations. Passengers can ask to see service records and should only accept rides in vehicles that appear to be in good repair.

Plus, your party may lead to reciprocation from others.

REAL ESTATE SECTION

DID YOU KNOW? Prospective real estate investors who hope to buy, hold and rent out their investment properties should first interview potential property managers before buying homes. While it’s possible to find property managers willing to manage single-family homes or duplexes, the financial resource Bankrate.com notes that many property managers prefer to manage large apartment complexes instead. Managing properties is hard work, and without skilled property managers on their side, real estate investors may become overwhelmed by the responsibilities of taking care of their real estate investments while simultaneously trying to maintain their own residences. Before buying investment properties, prospective real estate investors should interview various local property managers or property management firms, inquiring about their fees and what is included in those fees. If the cost of hiring property managers drastically cuts into the profits investors hoped to make off their investment properties, they might be better off looking to invest their money in areas other than real estate. Prospective investors can compare the potential return on investment after the cost of property managers has been factored in to the return they might get from more traditional investments to determine if investing in real estate is a sound financial decision.

But others know the truth, and they can be expected to step forward when the time comes. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You should be well on your way to finally making that important decision. Having the support of loved ones will help when crunch time comes. Keep a positive attitude. The week’s end brings an answer to an old mystery. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) There might be time to make a change. But be honest with yourself: Is it what you really want, or one you feel pressured into making? Your answer should determine your next move. I very often bring items to the [local] store in [local town], as many people do. Everything sold there is donated, so I can’t get over how most things are marked. Most everything is marked high. BENEFITS OF HIRING PROFESSIONAL CONTRACTORS Cost: Conventional wisdom suggests it’s less expensive to do something yourself than to hire someone else to do it for you, but that’s not necessarily true of home improvement projects. Labor costs typically account for a substantial amount of professionally contracted projects, but homeowners can cut those costs by volunteering to do some of the simpler tasks themselves. In addition, contractors often purchase materials at a much lower cost than individual homeowners because contractors buy in bulk. So while labor costs might be lower on DIY projects, the cost of materials can offset those savings.

Hand tools and gardening tools usually can be cleaned with rags. If these tools are especially dirty, give them a wash with soap and water. Just be sure to dry the tools thoroughly after washing them. LifeHacker advises wiping down wooden handles on tools with linseed oil to keep them in good repair. Power tools may benefit from compressed air being blown into smaller crevices to dislodge sawdust and other debris. Lubricate any moving parts with a product recommended by the manufacturer. Keeping tools clean and in good repair goes a long way toward safer, more efficient home improvement projects.

IMPROVE PRIVACY AND SECURITY AT HOME Privet hedge, arborvitae or Italian cypress are fast-growing evergreens that provide privacy around a home for homeowners who do not want to install traditional fencing. These trees also provide a natural habitat for various yard animals. Layering various plants of different heights and textures also can create a more natural and less imposing look. Fencing remains a viable option to create privacy and stop noise pollution. Privacy fences come in various materials, colors and sizes, enabling homeowners to choose styles that fit their landscapes.

IMPROVE PRIVACY AND SECURITY AT HOME Homeowners who like to entertain outdoors may want to make their outdoor living spaces more private. Pergolas allow light to filter through but obstruct direct view of patio activity, especially when combined with some gauzy draperies hanging on the sides. An enclosed patio or threeseason room can be a worthwhile addition for homeowners who like to enjoy the great outdoors without being in the elements or on display for neighbors. Structures vary from screened-in porches to greenhouses to removable gazebos. Potted plants or trailing vines can soften the structural edges and help the privacy devices blend in with the natural surroundings. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Demolition: Demolition involves more than picking up a sledgehammer and swinging away. Some demolition projects are best left to the pros. For example, any projects that involve exposure to hazardous materials are risky and therefore best left to experienced laborers. However, many homeowners are capable of safely and effectively pulling cabinets from walls, removing flooring or knocking down drywall. Homeowners unsure of how to approach demolition tasks can ask their contractors to demonstrate the proper technique so the demolition is done right and on time.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a snowbird who uses two different cardiologists for my health, and I am devoted to both of them. However, they have conflicting advice. I have coronary artery disease and had three stents placed in New York. I am an active 86-year-old woman who walks at least a mile daily and does light weights. My lab results are all normal. I take a daily baby aspirin and Plavix. I’ve done well with them. My Florida doctor wants me to discontinue the Plavix and take just the aspirin, but my New York doctor thinks I should keep the Plavix forever. I honestly don’t know the right course of action. -- S.T.M. ANSWER: Both aspirin and Plavix (clopidogrel) work by decreasing the activity of platelets, the specialized blood cells that start to form clots. They have been shown to reduce blockages of stents, which hold open blood vessels that have been unblocked via a catheter in the heart. There are several different types of stents, and some of them have medications embedded in them, which release slowly over many months. These “drug-eluting” stents require using both aspirin and clopidogrel for a longer period of time. There is some debate about how long to continue these medications, but I have not read any recommendations to continue them for more than 30 months. A study (the DAPT trial) used exact information about the person and the type of stent to make predictions about balancing risks, and the results of the study showed that in your case, using both aspirin and clopidogrel would reduce heart attack risk slightly, but at an increased risk of bleeding. Nonetheless, some cardiologists will continue both medications in some patients if there are no problems. It sounds like your New York cardiologist may have more knowledge about the stent, as it was performed in New York, so I would try to get the two of them to reach a consensus. There may be something about your particular case that warrants long-term treatment with these medications.

DEAR DR. ROACH: A few years ago, Johns Hopkins produced an article stating that possibly being hard of hearing and doing nothing about it could lead to Alzheimer’s disease. Is that study still valid? -- S.S. ANSWER: It’s been almost 30 years since a link between hearing loss and dementia was first published, and recent research has confirmed this link. It now seems clear that hearing loss increases the rate of decline in brain function by 30% to 40%, independent of other risk factors. Put another way, people with mild hearing loss had double the risk of dementia in 10 years; those with moderate hearing loss, triple the risk; those with severe hearing loss had five times the risk of dementia compared with people of normal hearing and the same age. The brains of people with hearing loss are more likely to atrophy as well. Of course, not everybody with hearing loss develops dementia, and people with normal hearing can. There is some, but not conclusive, evidence that hearing aids protect the brain from dementia in people with hearing loss. However, it is clear that hearing aids can improve social functioning, well-being and some measures of memory. Despite this evidence, many older people with hearing loss do not get it treated.

Honey is nature’s sweet nectar. While honey certainly can add flavor to various recipes or be enjoyed straight out of the jar, it has many other surprising benefits as well. Used since ancient times as both a food and for medicinal purposes, honey can make for a versatile addition to anyone’s diet.

Gardeners I discovered some strange fungi under a tree in my yard. It has small tan mounds that erupt into long narrow red spearlike structures. Can you tell me anything about it? - Jane The fungus you encountered might be a stinkhorn, as described in this article: http://blogs.ifas.ufl.edu/wakullaco/2019/01/08/the-elegant-stinkhorn-mutinus-elegans/ Without a photo, a definite ID isn’t possible. These fungal structures do not damage plants. Rather, they grow on decaying plant matter. Web search “Stinkhorn” for variations.

from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County Do the milkweed plants in my front perennial bed have any significant impact on monarch butterflies? I am trying to decide if I should keep or remove them. - Joanne Joanne, I understand your angst. The number of monarchs is declining for several reasons, including habitat loss in central Mexico where they over-winter and summer habitat loss in the Midwest. There is a lot of talk about planting milkweed to help them out, but common field milkweed is not a very attractive plant, spreads invasively underground and is difficult to remove.

I wouldn’t want it in my front garden bed. One person’s milkweed plant probably doesn’t make a difference, but if many people plant it, it could make a difference over time.

milkweed in this region including Butterfly Weed (Asclepius Tuberosa), and Swamp Milkweed (Asclepius Incarnata). These two plants are much better suited for home gardens: Common field milkweed (Asclepius they are more attractive and will not Syriaca), serves as both a preferred spread invasively like common milkhost plant (where these butterflies weed. lay their eggs and larva/caterpillars The article from the University of feed) and a nectar source for adults. A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel Health Services And Screenings Every Woman Should Know About (NAPSI)-Eating a healthy diet, exercising, getting a regular Pap smear and mammogram-these are just a few of the many steps women can take to help ensure they live longer, healthier lives. However, it can be tough to figure out what to do, given the mountains of information that are available. So, how can women determine which services and screenings are right for them-and when? You can start by being aware of what the science says about preventing certain health conditions and by having an open and honest conversation with your doctor about your values and preferences. Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) is the number one cause of death for women. Fortunately, you can help prevent CVD by addressing important risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and obesity. Talk to your doctor about your CVD risk and whether a low- or moderate-dose statin may be right for you. Statins are medications that lower your cholesterol, prevent buildup of cholesterol and fats in your arteries, and reduce your chances of having a heart attack or stroke. Depending on your age and risk factors, taking a low-dose aspirin daily can also potentially help prevent CVD. Aspirin can help keep blood clots from happening, lowering your risk. You can reduce your risk of CVD by quitting smoking, eating a healthy diet, and becoming more physically active. Cervical Cancer - Screening for cervical cancer finds the disease when it is most treatable. Unfortunately, 12,000 women in the United States are diagnosed with cervical cancer each year. Most cases of cervical cancer happen in women who have not been regularly screened or appropriately treated. That is why it is critical for women to get screened regularly starting at age 21. There are several effective options for screening, depending on your age and preferences. The Pap test and the human papillomavirus (HPV) test are the most effective ways to screen for cervical cancer and are done during a visit to your doctor’s office. Talk to your doctor about which test is best for you and how often you should be tested. Breast Cancer - Breast cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in women; roughly 237,000 cases are reported in the United States each year. Breast cancer screening aims to find the disease early, when it is easier to treat. Mammograms, which are X-ray pictures of the breasts used by doctors to look for early signs of the disease, are the most effective method of screening for breast cancer. Evidence shows that the benefits of mammograms increase with age, with women aged 60 to 69 most likely to benefit from screening. Still, about one in three women who should get a mammogram regularly do not. If you are between the ages of 50 and 74, talk to your doctor about getting a mammogram regularly. Screening for Osteoporosis - As people age, their bones begin to thin. For some people, their bones become very weak and can break or fracture more easily, a condition known as osteoporosis. Osteoporosis affects one in every four women age 65 or older in the United States. Bone measurement tests can be used to screen for osteoporosis and identify the likelihood of future fractures. For people who have osteoporosis, treatments are available to reduce the risk of a fracture. If you are a woman age 65 or older ask your doctor about being screened for osteoporosis and other ways to improve bone health. On Aug. 5, 1981, President Ronald Reagan begins firing 11,359 air-traffic controllers striking in violation of his order to return to work. Two days earlier almost 13,000 air-traffic controllers went on strike over negotiations to raise their pay. On Aug. 6, 1945, an American B-29 bomber, the Enola Gay, drops the world’s first atom bomb over the city of Hiroshima, Japan. On Aug. 7, 1959, the American satellite Explorer 6 is launched into Earth orbit. The 142-pound spacecraft featured a photocell scanner that transmitted a crude picture of the Earth’s surface from a distance of 17,000 miles. The photo, received in Hawaii, took nearly 40 minutes to transmit. On Aug. 8, 1863, after his defeat at Gettysburg, Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee sends a letter of resignation to Confederate President Jefferson Davis. Davis refused the request.

[Celery] is as fresh and clean as a rainy day after a spell of heat. It crackles pleasantly in the mouth.... it should be eaten alone, for it is the only food which one really wants to hear oneself eat. ~A.A. Milne (1882–1956), “A Word for Autumn,” Not That It Matters

HOW EVERYDAY CITIZENS CAN PROTECT LOCAL PARKS Leave nothing behind. Memories are not the only things park visitors should take with them when they leave the park. Estimates suggest that as much as 100 million pounds of garbage are generated at California’s Yosemite National Park each year. Significant damage can result if even a tiny fraction of that garbage is left behind. In addition, park officials forced to expend their limited resources on garbage pickup may not have enough resources left to address other issues, further threatening the park. Whether you’re hiking or camping, make sure everything you take into the park comes with you when you leave. If you have trash, make sure it’s deposited into the appropriate receptacles. DID YOU KNOW? In a survey of 3,500 working professionals, Allied Van Lines found that 17 percent had relocated for a job. Roughly 50 percent of those who relocated did so for career advancement and/or more money, while 8 percent moved to be closer to family or for other relationship reasons. Moving is often characterized as stressful, and 31 percent of survey respondents who moved indicated that finding a home was the most challenging part of relocating for a job. Acclimating to a new community (29 percent), finding services such as utilities and medical care (13 percent) and making friends (12 percent) were also cited as some of the most challenging parts of relocating for a job. As difficult as relocating can be, 64 percent of those who had relocated expressed positive sentiments toward their job relocation, while just 7.5 percent harbored negative feelings about relocating (28 percent were neutral).

EMPLOYMENT: THE NEXT STEP AFTER GRADUATION Graduation is an exciting time in the lives of students. After years in the classroom preparing for life after school, graduation marks a time when students are finally ready to enter the “real world” and land their first professional job. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics advises that earning a college degree can greatly improve a person’s chance of landing a job. The more education a person receives, the lower his or her prospects of being unemployed become. The BLS said that, as of 2014, individuals with a bachelor’s degree could earn on average $1,101 per week, compared to $668 for persons with high school diplomas. Those with bachelor’s degrees had a 3.5 percent unemployment rate compared to 6 percent for those with only high school diplomas. The National Center for Education Statistics estimates that roughly two million students earn bachelor’s degrees each year. Many others will go on to earn master’s or doctorates before entering the workforce. As the economy continues to improve, job prospects follow suit. According to a job outlook from the National Association of Colleges and Employers, employers had plans to hire 8.3 percent more new college graduates in 2015 than in 2014. The growth of businesses and the rising rate of retiring Baby Boomers has spurred employment prospects. Landing a job post-graduation requires diligence on the part of new grads. EMPLOYMENT
