Road trips are a tradition for many people. Excursions to see the scenery can be aw e-inspiring, but drivers must make sure their vehicles can handle such jaunts. Tire inspections are essential before hitting the o pen road. Resale value may not be foremost on the minds of new car ow ners, but the earlier buyers begin to factor resale value into their carcare routines, the more they w ill benefit dow n the road.
CORBY’S COLLISION proudly servicing the area for 78 years. “We work with the insurance company, making the repair process easier”
To serve and safeguard our community, we are taking all necessary precautions to clean and disinfect your vehicles in this most critical time. We are here for your trusted repairs, and deeply care for the health of you and your family.
Extend the life of your vehicle: Scale back on short trips. The toll cold starts take on a vehicle can add up over time. When a car is started, condensation builds up in the vehicle’s exhaust system. On longer trips, that condensation will gradually evaporate. However, on short trips, that condensation often does not have enough time to evaporate, and over time too many short trips will lead to an accumulation of water in the muffler that can lead to rust and rust holes on the muffler. Short trips also can negatively affect gas mileage. When possible, leave your car at home on trips into town when you can just as easily walk or ride a bicycle. Over time, reducing the amount of short trips you take in your car will greatly reduce wear and tear on your vehicle and improve your fuel efficiency as well.

OTHER STAY COOL THIS SUMMER WHILE LIMITING ENERGY CONSUMPTION
HOME SERVICES
Embrace strategic landscaping. The landscaping outside of a home can contribute to cooler climates inside the home. Deciduous trees shed their leaves annually, and when planted on the western and southern sides of a home, these trees can block the sun from entering the home during the hottest times of day, reducing the need to lower the thermostat on air conditioners. Of course, when these trees shed their leaves in late fall, sunlight can then make its way into the home, potentially reducing heating costs.

Every day may not be good, but there is something good in every day THANK YOU, AMAN ROOFING! When I phoned to ask for an estimate to fix the soffit at my dad’s house, James was prompt in getting there and very courteous. After looking at the soffit, James noticed my dad’s VFW hat, and since my dad is a war veteran, James called me to tell me that they give discounts to veterans. Since the fix was small, he indicated they BRIGHT LIGHTS! Our neighbors on (local) lake across from (local homes) have been shinning huge bright lights across the lake. They started with one and are now up to three. These lights are so bright that it takes the joy out of sitting on our balconies in the evening, even in our living rooms. Very annoying! There doesn’t seem to be any reason for shinning them. Please be courteous and turn them off. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! Every single morning, as the sun is coming up, lasting a few hours, your dog barks nonstop. If your decision is to keep your dog in a chicken coop 24/7, 365 days a year, in a village neighborhood, maybe you should think about moving to the country. PLEASE BE POLITE I work in retail at a local grocery store. Ever since this GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

diamond that broke off my necklace. It was a gift from my late husband and means the world to me. We totally blocked the entrance to the store while everyone looked for it, but no one complained. Thank you so much!
THANK YOU SO MUCH! THANK YOU FOR I want to thank the staff BEING KIND and customers at Mahan’s Thank you so much to all Liquor Store in Brockport of those who are sharing for helping me find my little love, support, and tolerance all started, I’ve noticed an uptick in customers being rude, unfriendly, or downright hostile toward us. Please understand that we’re working longer, more hectic hours, and all for around minimum wage since this whole pandemic started. If your cashier is slow, they’re probably exhausted. If we don’t have anything in stock, it’s not the stockers’ fault. If corporate raised prices, there’s nothing those of us working in the store can do. It costs nothing to be polite and not kick up a fuss. I’m sad that I have to feel anxious about going to work because I fully expect someone to insult or harass me over things beyond my control. If your shopping experience is bad, think of what working here must be like.
and realize that the people who do these are using their time, talent, and money to try and brighten someone’s day. Instead, you find reason to complain. They are creating random gifts, not trash. If you don’t like them, then simply look away. It’s not like it is a huge eyesore blocking your whole path. Try to find some beauty and happiness in this walk we call life instead of complaining and nitpicking at every single little item. You will find much more comfort. It takes fewer muscles to smile than to frown. Try it!
INCONSIDERATE ATVS I would like to thank all the inconsiderate people who buy 4-wheel vehicles and speed up and down our roads illegally at all hours of the day & night. Some of these people are as young as PAINTED ROCKS NOT TRASH! 10 years old. If you look up DMV For the people complaining laws in New York you will see about the painted rocks: Stop that you are supposed to license

during these difficult times. It is so beautiful to see people encouraging each other to be mindful of what another person may be going through. Thank you to the many, many people who care more about the well-being of their neighbors than about fighting to establish a point-of-view. Thank you to those who remind us all to be kind, always.
these vehicles, and unless you have a street posted that allows ATV’s to travel on them, you are not legal! You also need to be licensed to travel these roads with license plates. We value our rural life and have free range animals, horseback riders, bicycle riders that are near or use our roads, and unlicensed, uninsured ATV’s pose problems. These vehicles also travel in fields without our permission. What happens if there are accidents, no one is liable? Use some common sense and obey the law! You will be reported to the local authorities.

KITCHEN DESIGN WITH HEALTH AND ERGONOMICS IN MIND (NAPSI)—Whether you’re among the 50 million Americans over 65 (90 percent of whom hope to continue to age at home), the 60 percent of families with children at home, have other ability issues or safety concerns or think you could someday, incorporating ergonomic elements that promote a seamless experience in the kitchen can make it a more comfortable place for everyone for many years to come. Smart Sinks Given the amount of time spent in front of the sink, selecting one that considers your lifestyle and how you cook should be a priority. Details such as the durability and hygienic qualities of a sink’s material along with its style and size can impact efficiency and comfort. For example, the latest sink from BLANCO, a manufacturer of finely crafted sinks, is designed to enhance workflow and accommodate all users. A first of its kind, the IKON® 33” Apron 1 3/4 Bowl with Low Divide sink is made with the brand’s exclusive SILGRANIT granite composite material. Easy to clean and scratch resistant, patented SILGRANIT material is a repellent, nonporous surface that eliminates the need to use harsh chemicals when cleaning. The IKON sink also has a convenient low divide that sits just 5 1/2” from the sink bottom, making it easier to handle large pots and baking sheets while still dividing the sink into cleaning and prepping bowls. The apron front or farmhouse design, minimizes the need to lean over as much and so helps reduce strain. Optional accessories further enhance comfort and workflow. A floating grid provides an extra level within the sink so handling hot and heavy pots can be safer and easier. A Floating Cutting Board that fits right on top of the sink instantly creates another workspace beyond the countertop. Faucets Semi-professional and pull-down faucet models help make clean-up more efficient with their easy-to-maneuver design and powerful dual spray features. To make washing hands, food and dishes easier, consider a faucet with sensor technology such as the BLANCO SOLENTA™ Senso Semi-Professional Kitchen Faucet that lets you turn on the water with a wave of your hand. You don’t have to touch the faucet with your hands to get them clean—or if they’re full. Other ways to enhance the ergonomics in your kitchen include: • Use drawers instead of cabinets for storage so there’s less reaching • Install different countertop heights to accommodate various users • Raise the height of the dishwasher and oven if you can • Select nonporous counter materials like quartz that are easy to keep clean • Use LED lights for more brightness from less energy and that are cool to the touch • Consider an easy-to-clean induction cooking surface—it can reduce energy costs, too Learn More: For further facts about sinks and faucets that can make your kitchen safer, more efficient and even better looking, visit blancoamerica.com.

PAW'S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Dog is freeking out over face masks DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Every time I put on a medical face mask, my dog “Artie” starts barking like mad. When I speak to him, he will stop barking, but he looks restless and whines. He doesn’t bark at strangers that we pass on our walks -- just me and my husband. What is going on? -Sarah S., Burlington, Vermont DEAR SARAH: Artie is freaking out because he is familiar with you and your husband’s faces, and suddenly, without warning, those faces are gone! He may rely on your faces for visual cues, like a smile or frown. The sudden change is unnerving him. Taking off the mask isn’t an option right now, especially in areas that mandate face mask use whenever you’re outside due to the pandemic. Instead, the American Kennel Club recommends both desensitizing dogs to the face mask and helping them associate positive things with it. Before putting on the mask, show it to Artie and let him sniff it. Carry a mask around the house, but don’t wear it; let it hang off of one ear, or wear it under your chin, so that Artie sees you with it regularly. The AKC even suggests taping a mask on the wall next to Artie’s food bowl, although if he shows signs of stress having it there, take it down and try something else. Try using hand signals that correspond to the command or praise you want to give. This can help redirect his attention from your face and help him make the connection that you are still there and providing guidance. Make sure that Artie is in a comfortable state before training sessions. Ease off if he begins to act concerned or stressed. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner. com.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles
Coronavirus Scammers Scammers have come up with even more ways to defraud us, this time using the coronavirus. Contact tracers are people who make calls when someone you know has tested positive for the coronavirus. Their job is to trace the possible path the virus has taken from person to person. They only need health information and the places you’ve been, not financial or personal information. If someone calls you who insists on knowing additional information as part of the contact tracing, hang up. If you get emails or calls from someone saying they have a cure for the virus, or a sure-fire method of being certain you don’t get it, hang up. Their next questions will likely be to ask for your personal or financial information, or a credit card number so you can pay for shipping. Don’t fall for it. There are no approved test kits or cures that can be handed out to the general public. If you get email that’s supposedly from the government asking about where to send your stimulus relief check, ignore it. The government is not going to contact you about that. They’ll send your check (if you’re eligible for one) in the mail or they’ll deposit it directly into your account, the same one where they deposit your Social Security benefit. Scammers also will pretend to be people from your bank. If you get suspicious email that looks like it might be from the government with information about coronavirus, don’t open it, and especially don’t click on any links. Those can put a virus or tracer on your computer. To stay up on the news about the virus, use a legitimate source: www.ftc.gov/coronavirus. On that site you’ll find more information about avoiding coronavirus scams. Beware ... and stay safe.

Sherry Sabo Shares Advice for Schooling at Home BY AMANDA DUDEK
Teaching children at home has been a valid educational option for many years; however, the COVID-19 pandemic has prompted many parents to seriously consider homeschooling their children for the first time. A number of families are in districts which will hold virtual classes this fall, while others are looking to lead their children’s education themselves. Sherry and Lou Sabo of North Winton Village have led one of New York’s 17 LEAH (Loving Education At Home) chapters for 17 of the 18 years they homeschooled. Today, they continue to volunteer as Rochester-Finger Lakes Regional Representatives for Homeschool New York/ LEAH. The Sabos understand the challenge of balancing work and family. They are local businesses owners, have successfully raised and homeschooled their three children, now ages 26, 28 & 29, and are expecting their first grandchild. A leader for LEAH, a faith-based homeschooling organization which has supported area homeschoolers for more than 35 years, Sherry Sabo shares advice, encouragement and practical tips both for those homeschooling their children and for those whose children will attend virtual classes at home.

“We have been talking with a lot of people who are considering homeschooling this fall,” says Sherry Sabo. She explains that while some families were already planning on homeschooling, others are feeling forced into it by the COVID-19 pandemic. She encourages these families to think of teaching their children at home as a positive opportunity. “The one-on-one tutorial method of education is a most effective method of learning,” explains Sabo. “That is why we sometimes hire tutors. Individual instruction is a real positive compared to many children getting a small slice of the teacher’s time when possible.” Sabo adds that parents are more able to tailor their curriculum to each child and his or her interests. Curriculum can be developed around those interests while taking into account learning needs and adaptations, special needs, and accelerated learning. “It is wonderful to be able to fine tune their schoolwork to support their interests and needs,” she continues. “You can help them find their passion and supplement their learning to help them follow their dreams, beyond the standard curriculum. She adds that including her family’s faith and values into the learning process was very important to them, as well. Regardless of the materials, each curriculum must meet subject requirements listed in the New York SED homeschool regulations. “It’s important to understand the Homeschool regulations in New York State,” Sabo said. “They are the plumb line for your relationship with the school. They also keep you from trying to do too much, creating anxiety and stress, or from not doing enough.”

FRIDAY, AUGUST 21, 2020
Parents whose children are attending their school’s virtual classes at home may not have to choose their curriculum, but there are plenty of other challenges. “Many parents shared their experience of extreme frustration attempting online classes while juggling one or two devices between their children. It was very frustrating because they felt they couldn’t keep up,” explains Sabo. “They were accountable to several teachers, yet each has a different style and amount of work they expect.” While there will doubtlessly be differences from teacher to teacher, the fall should see some of the other bumps smoothed out. Sabo suggests parents of virtual schoolers and homeschoolers alike limit screen time as much as possible. “Supplement the content with books you read with your children,” suggests Sabo. “Over and over again, reading together has been proven both beneficial and effective, opening up new worlds of imagination and improving the vocabulary.” Several students also struggle with focus, particularly when their environment has changed. While Sabo again highlights the importance of limiting screen time, she also encourages parents to be creative with their setup. She suggests not trying to create a child’s classroom at home. “Don’t try to bring the public-school classroom set up into your home,” she advises. “Let them get used to you being their teacher. Minimize seat time and give them frequent breaks. For example, children in grades K-3 shouldn’t spend more than an hour of seat time total and not all at once, but rather using nonsequential, 15-minute lessons. Meet the requirements;
"If
then let them venture on their own. Let them self-direct their learning and explore their own interests, fostering and protecting their love of learning. This helps create lifelong learners.” Sabo suggests setting a timer for each lesson and making sure breaks include running and other movement-based play. She also recommends allowing each child to spend time doing something that is fun for them at the end of each school day. “It doesn’t have to be a reward every time,” she notes. “But it is fun to throw that in.” The changes and challenges parents are facing this fall can be daunting, but Sabo insists parents can do this. “Do not be afraid,” she exclaims. “You have already taught your child so many other things. Don’t be afraid of some of your weaker areas. If your child is taking classes virtually with their school, the school can offer extra resources and support. If you have decided to homeschool, most curriculums provide excellent teacher guides for each course. If you are nervous about a particular topic, practice the lesson a few times until you feel more confident.” “Enlist the help of others such as grandparents,” continues Sabo. “Share some teaching with a homeschooling neighbor. Join a homeschool co-op to attend one day a week for classes like art, gym, science, and other topics. If there is an outstanding need, there will always be a resource. Seek out friends who are strong in areas with which your child needs help and in which you also struggle. Consider hiring a tutor for concepts which remain challenging."
you are determined, there will always be
creative ways to make it work!" COMMON GRILLING MISTAKES Forgetting to preheat: Preheating the grill ensures that foods will cook quickly and as evenly as possible. Otherwise, meats can lose moisture and even stick to cooler grates. Reader’s Digest suggests preheating to between 350 F and 450 F depending on the food.

ELSIE’S STEWED APPLES Serves 6 to 8 2 to 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 pounds apples, peeled, cored and cut into thick slices 1/2 cup honey, preferably sage honey 1/2 cup white wine Zest of 1 lemon Juice of 1 lemon Fresh sage sprigs for garnish 1. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the apples, turn the heat to high and sauté until they begin to brown on the edges, about 5 minutes. If some are getting too well done, remove them and place on a plate while the rest continue to cook, then return them to the skillet when all are done. 2. Reduce the heat to low and add the honey, wine, lemon zest, lemon juice, and 1/2 cup water. Cover and allow to cook until the apples are tender but still firm; you don’t want them to turn into applesauce. 3. Serve this in a bowl, tuck in a couple sprigs of fresh sage from your garden, and tell your guests all about sage honey.

Watermelons provide cooling, juicy refreshment during the warm days of summer. But while they’re most associated with summer, watermelons can typically be found in grocery stores yearround. Watermelons are members of the cucurbitaceae family, which includes other gourds, such as pumpkin, squash and cucumber. Watermelons can be considered a fruit or a vegetable. In some areas of the world, watermelons are considered a fruit used primarily in snacks and desserts. In Russia, watermelon rind is pickled, while some Asian countries stir-fry or stew watermelons. To quench one’s curiosity about watermelons, the following are six facts about this beloved food, courtesy of The Watermelon Board. 1. Washing watermelons before cutting into them will help prevent the transfer of any dirt or bacteria into the fleshy center. 2. An average 15- to 20-pound watermelon offers 90 6-ounce servings. 3. Watermelons grow in warm climates and are harvested from Florida to Guatemala. Residents of the United States who want to enjoy domestically grown watermelons should look for them in June, July and August. 4. Seedless watermelons contain small, white “seeds.” These are actually seed coats that didn’t fully form. Crossing watermelons that are a diploid plant (having two sets of chromosomes) with a tetraploid plant (having four sets of chromosomes) will form a fruit with a triploid seed three sets of chromosomes). It’s the triploid that produces seedless watermelons. 5. Whole watermelons do not necessarily need to be refrigerated. But once cut, any remaining pieces should be refrigerated. 6. Watermelons are 92 percent water, and they’re the perfect carrying case for beverages. Early explorers even used watermelons as canteens.

HOW TO SUPPORT BUSINESSES DURING MANDATORY RESTRICTIONS Recognize that more than food is available for takeout. In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York announced relaxations on laws governing what can and cannot be obtained via takeout, allowing takeout on goods that were previously restricted in regard to takeout. For example, Cuomo announced that the New York State Liquor Authority intended to temporarily relax regulations regarding the takeout and delivery of alcohol. Utilizing such services can be a great way to support local businesses while still adhering to recommendations designed to slow the spread of COVID-19.

Tipping men and women who work in the food service industry is commonplace in the United States and Canada, where citizens typically tip between 15 and 20 percent when dining out at restaurants. But American and Canadian travelers about to depart for overseas destinations may want to familiarize themselves with the practices regarding gratuities before their planes touch down. Some countries automatically add gratuities onto customers’ bills. For example, the government in Dubai mandates that a 10 percent service charge be added to all hotel, restaurant and bar bills. This service charge is then divided by the staff at the establishment, making the charge the equivalent of a tip. Diners in Morocco, where the gratuity is sometimes included in the bill, might be surprised to learn that a 10 percent tip in that country is considered generous. Tips are included in the bill in Costa Rica, where travelers need not feel obligated to leave any additional gratuities. Service is often included in the bill within the United Kingdom as well, though travelers should inspect the bill before assuming gratuity was included. Visitors to Spain should not feel obligated to leave a gratuity larger than 13 percent, and even a tip in the range of 7 percent is considered acceptable.
Page 25
NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Check bagged frozen vegetables with the squeeze test: If it is hard and solid, it has thawed and refrozen, so you should choose another bag. * “My family drink sodas from the plastic bottles. At the beginning of storm season, I fill a dozen or so about three-quarters full and put them in the freezer. They are good in coolers and such, but mostly they fill space, making the freezer not have to work so hard. And if we lose power, they help to keep frozen foods frozen longer.” -- T.R. in Georgia * “My family has always used mayonnaise as a salve on minor burns. I heard you can use toothpaste, too.” -- Sam P. via e-mail * “I love to put photos of family on the fridge. I found that the photos were getting ruined from grease and moisture in the air. To get around that I cleaned and laminated them. Afterward, I hot-glued little magnets to the backs, and now I can move them around to accommodate new photos. There are so many, and it gives me pleasure to look at them.” -- C.R. in Oklahoma. * Use a paper plate as a splatter guard in the microwave. It will not sag down into your food, and will not get dragged off to the side by any rotation.

There is No Place Like Home TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
Are you or your loved one finding it difficult to manage the daily tasks of life at home?
By Keith Roach, M.D.
Husband Makes Frequent Nighttime Bathroom Visits
W offe: Companionship • Transportation • Light Housekeeping • Laundry Meal Preparation • Medication Reminders • Shopping Assistance with Personal Care • Safety Checks • Care Available 24/7
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband, 79 years old, is getting up five or six times at night to urinate. The urgent care doctor said he doesn’t have an infection but doesn’t know what’s going on. He is taking Flomax, but that doesn’t seem to be helping. Who should he see? -- E.L.O. ANSWER: Urinating at nighttime (“nocturia”) is a common problem for men, but if this is a new or suddenly worsened problem, it requires evaluation. The first question is whether he is urinating a lot or a little. A male bladder typically holds about 500 cc (almost a quart), so if his bladder were full every time, he might be making as much as 2.5 liters a night. Nighttime urination is considered high-volume when it constitutes a third or more of total urine output for 24 hours. High-volume nocturia can happen when there is too much of something to get rid of: sugar, in people with mellitus (“sugar diabetes”); salt, in people who eat too much salt at dinner; water, in people who drink a whole lot of water, especially at night; and occasionally in people with congestive heart failure. In heart failure, there is not enough blood flow to the kidneys during the day, so when the person is at rest, the kidneys have enough blood flow to get rid of the fluid that has accumulated during the day (often in the legs and feet). Another cause of high-volume nocturia is diabetes insipidus, a problem with either the kidney or the control center in the brain, causing the kidney to excrete too much water. That control center uses a hormone called anti-diuretic hormone to regulate water excretion. Normally, it is high at night, so there is less urine output at night. Sometimes this normal variation is reversed, leading to excess urine output at night, even without diabetes insipidus. High-volume nocturia is most commonly evaluated by doctors in internal medicine, including kidney and heart specialists. Low-volume nocturia is caused by a problem with the bladder or, in men, the prostate. Urologists are the experts in figuring out where the problem is and the best course of treatment. Many men get treated for prostate problems when the real issue is an overactive bladder. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My blood pressure drug, losartan, was recalled because of contamination issues with NDEA and NDMA; one is used to make liquid rocket fuel and the other is a byproduct in the manufacture of pesticides. How does this happen? Does the drug company share manufacturing facilities with companies that make these other products? -- EG ANSWER: I read some speculation by chemists on how the contamination could have happened, and it seems to me that one company made a new process for making losartan (and the related drugs irbesartan and valsartan) that, although cheaper and more efficient, allowed contaminants to form unrecognized. Although not recognized until 2018, it could have been happening since 2012. Other companies changed their manufacturing as well, unaware of these toxic impurities. This is a real problem, not so much because of this current recall (where the contamination levels are very low), but because it shows the industry lacks enough oversight to quickly identify contamination in generic pharmaceuticals coming from multiple countries. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. TAKE A CUE FROM SUCCESSFUL WOMEN Women had another successful year in 2015. According to the Fortune 500 list, 2015 tied the record set for the highest number of female CEOs in America’s largest companies by revenue. Twenty-four women, including Mary Barra of General Motors, Meg Whitman of Hewlett-Packard and Ginny Rometty of IBM, made the list. Although women make up 45 percent of the labor force and only 5 percent head Fortune 500 companies, women are making greater strides than ever before.
