Old or poorly maintained headlights can be hazardous for a variety of reasons. W hen coupled w ith inc lement w eather, outdated or dirty headlights can make it difficult for drivers to see pedestrians and other vehicles. In addition, drivers w ho struggle to see at night may find their visibility further compromised by olde r headlights that don’t provide the light they need to navigate their vehicles safely once the sun has gone dow n. Beca use headlights can have such a dramatic impact on driver safety, it’s important that motorists take step s to maintain their headlamps.

Honeybees flitting from flower to flower is one of the first signs that warm weather has arrived. Honeybees are a welcome presence in the garden, pollenating plants and contributing to local honey supplies. Despite their importance in the ecosystem, honeybees are in grave danger. In 2014, U.S. President Barack Obama created a task force comprised of various agencies to address the growing issue of rapidly diminishing honeybees and other pollinating insects. This initiative was a response to reports from American beekeepers indicating hive deaths have been on the rise, gravely affecting the honeybee population. Honeybees pollinate many fruit trees, nut plants and vegetables, playing a crucial role for many nations’ food industries. In addition to government involvement and honeybee conservation methods designed by environmental agencies, there are many things that regular citizens and homeowners can do to protect honeybees this summer.

My name is Arlo! I am a 9-monthold Dachshund. Everyone loves my one blue eye, and I like it too because I get a lot of attention from it. I have a ton of energy, but I also give out the best cuddles. I adore going on car rides and long walks. I might be a small dog, but I protect my home and bark whenever someone knocks on the door.

Tipping isn’t even mandatory. I am a hairdresser, and I always tell people to do what they can. People who are on fixed incomes or don’t make a lot occasionally treat themselves. There was time a lady could only afford to give me $2, and I told her, “It’s fine; you do what you can. It’s the thought that counts,” and I depend on tips, too. People are doing the best they can in this world and shouldn’t be shamed for it. If someone is at least leaving a tip, it’s better than nothing.

During a recent visit to the ER, two of the nurses were not kind and not friendly. It is such a shame that they would act in such a manner, particularly in the profession they have chosen. I have been doing it for a few weeks now and lost a few pounds, but it goes against everything I usually eat -- high quantities of red meat, lots of full-fat foods and dairy. Since I am losing some weight and actually feel better and am sleeping better, I like the short-term results, but I cannot see this as a long-term way of life. I am concerned about all that fat going into my body and clogging my arteries. I exercise every day with Zumba, jogging, etc. -- J.P. ANSWER: The ketosis diet favors very large amounts of fat -60% to 80% of calories, with 15% to 20% of calories from protein and 5% or less from carbohydrates. The theory is to cause ketosis, a physiological condition of ketones in the blood as a result of high fat intake. It has been used since the 1920s as a treatment for seizures, but now is used for weight loss. Like every diet, it has both good and bad aspects. On the good side, it is effective at short-term weight loss. However, much of the apparent early weight loss is due to water weight, which is a universal finding on a high-fat diet. Weight gain is likely when stopping the diet. It is highly restrictive. Further, many of the foods that you can’t eat on this diet are those that have been shown to be associated with improved health, especially vegetables and most fruits. Most people will have a substantial increase in cholesterol levels (by as much as 50%). The red meat and saturated fat probably present an independent risk of heart disease and cancer (even apart from its effect on cholesterol), although this remains somewhat controversial. I do not recommend the keto diet for long-term use, at all. It may have some benefit in helping with short-term weight loss, but I think there are much healthier alternatives for most people. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: Your column about the 58-year-old woman who felt like she had oil in her eye reminded me of having a very similar situation. I described it to my optometrist, and he also diagnosed ocular migraine. I wanted another opinion, because the only symptom I had was the oil, no headache or visual disturbances. The ophthalmologist diagnosed blepharitis, or clogged oil glands at the base of my eyelashes. She recommended placing a warm pack of rice in a sock over my eye and then washing the eye area with baby shampoo on a washcloth. I did this for a week or two, and on my visit with her to recheck the eyes, the problem was gone. -- J.P. ANSWER: Thank you for writing. Blepharitis is caused by changes in the meibomian glands, oil glands that are present in both eyelids, often associated with changes in bacteria. I usually see people with this condition noticing red eyes and a gritty sensation. However, you are quite right that it includes blurry vision, and the eye-care professional sometimes can see an oily or foamy film over the eye. The treatment the ophthalmologist recommended works for most people. Gentle lid massage may help get additional oily material out of the glands. However, antibiotics or other treatments are sometimes necessary. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. ROC Rec Fest is coming to Spencerport! – By Simon Devenish

Festival Director Simon Devenish enjoys kayaking on the Erie Canal in Spencerport

Spencerport Depot & Canal Museum

Mark your calendar now for Saturday, September 14th camping, cycling, even caving. Now my wife Laura and I live close to from 10am-4pm. Why? Because you’ll want to bring your the canal in the village and especially enjoy cycling and kayaking,” family and friends to the first ever Rochester Recreation he said. Festival – ROC Rec Fest! Demkos lives in Ogden and grew up in Churchville. He bought Café When Spencerport resident Simon Devenish (Director, Spencerport Canal Museum) and Spencerport businessman Phil Demkos (Owner, Café Macchiato) began exploring ideas to attract people to the west side of Rochester, they focused on what Spencerport has to offer: the canal, the towpath, a great park, two terrific museums and many popular eateries. They felt the obvious direction was to capitalize on recreation opportunities, and the idea of ROC Rec Fest was born. Working to turn that idea into a real event, Devenish and Demkos formed a corporation and are now looking for sponsors, vendors and volunteers. Sponsors may be businesses, groups or individuals providing initial funding. Vendors will be organizations that sell goods or services related to recreation and outdoor activities or promote recreation in their area. Volunteers are needed for a variety of administrative jobs leading up to the event as well as for set up and parking on the day of the festival. “We know we will have to start small,” Devenish said, “but the more people we can involve in this new venture, the sooner we will have another annual event drawing people to our village for recreation, food and entertainment.” If the event is eventually successful enough to generate profits, that money will be put back into the Spencerport community in the form of scholarships and community grants. ROC Rec Fest will have something for everyone! The event, to be held at the Spencerport Firemen’s Field, will include five areas or “zones:” an Activity Zone featuring games and physical challenges; a Vendor Zone featuring products, services and ideas related to outdoor recreation; a Demo Zone where children and adults can be part of tutorials on everything from bicycles to yoga; a Food Zone and a Live Music Zone.

Macchiato at 123 S. Union Steet a year ago and is eager to be a part of efforts that will bring people to Spencerport’s village center. “Obviously, as a local business owner, I have an interest in making Spencerport a destination for people,” said Demkos. “My parents own Riki’s Family Restaurant in Fairport, and they also have to deal with the impact of an extended canal bridge closure. So, while that situation is an immediate concern, I’m also committed to the longterm success of our community and being part of making that happen.” Demkos and his family enjoy horseback riding, mountain biking, hiking and camping, some of the reasons he is a strong advocate for outdoor recreation. “My goal with ROC Rec Fest is to promote community health and wellness with fun, challenging outdoor activities,” Demkos stated. “Our long-term goal is to encourage people of all ages to maintain a healthy lifestyle while taking advantage of the outdoors.” Please contact Devenish and Demkos at info@rocrecfest.com immediately if you are interested in becoming a festival Sponsor or Vendor on Saturday, September 14th. Groups, families and individuals willing to Volunteer should also send a message to info@ rocrecfest.com. If you would like more information about this topic, please contact Festival Director, Simon Devenish on (585) 851-1629 or send an email to info@rocrecfest.com.

Older residents of the Ogden-Spencerport area might find this reminiscent of the beginnings of Canal Days and Christmas by the Canal. Both events began small and grew exponentially over the years as people came from all over Rochester to share in the charm of a small canal town. They hope to follow in those footsteps. Part of the decision to organize this new event now as opposed to a year or two from now, is due to the upcoming extended closure of the Union Street bridge. Devenish and Demkos believe that creating an activity which will draw families to the village will be beneficial for everybody’s business. Another goal of ROC Rec Fest is to promote and encourage outdoor recreation. Devenish, who moved to Spencerport from Perth, Australia, says he has been involved in outdoor recreation all of his life, first with his family, then through the scouting program and now with his wife, Laura. “Growing up, I enjoyed canoeing, kayaking, hiking,

585-802-1544 WATERING 101: HELP YOUR LAWN THRIVE THROUGH THE DOG DAYS OF SUMMER Lean on mulch to retain moisture. Mulch is often considered an aesthetically appealing addition to a landscape, but it serves a practical purpose as well. Mulch retains moisture during the hot summer months, reducing the need to water -- a valuable benefit during a drought restriction. Mulch also makes it difficult for weeds to grow, which can keep homeowners from spending hot summer afternoons pulling weeds out of their gardens and flower beds.

CARE FOR TOOLS PROPERLY Whether garden tools are kept in a shed or inside the home, hang them so they don’t crowd the floor. Moisture can creep up from concrete or dirt floors and eventually compromise the tools. Keep cords neatly wound and secured as well.

WHAT TO DO WHEN A PROJECT STALLS Ask for help. There’s no shame in asking for help to complete a project. Some homeowners may underestimate the scope of a project until it’s too late. Asking family, friends or neighbors for help might be the only way to get a stalled project back on track. Certain home improvement projects may not require advanced skills, and even friends or family with little or no home improvement experience can pitch in to complete such projects. When more advanced projects stall, homeowners may want to hire contractors to complete the work. If budgets have not left much room for hiring a contractor, homeowners can perform some of the labor on their own.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel Ways to Make the World a Better Place for Seniors (Family Features) By 2050, the senior population (adults age 65 and older) will be more than double that of the world’s youngest citizens, and the number of people living beyond age 80 is expected to triple over the next 30 years. As the aging population increases, some 11.3 million seniors are living alone, according to the Institute on Aging. In addition, women are twice as likely as older men to live by themselves. Without proper support, seniors may face a wide range of issues including limited mobility, chronic conditions, improper nutrition and feelings of loneliness. For example, older adults can have problems chewing or may take medications which interfere with their appetites. However, research shows lack of companionship may be the biggest challenge. In fact, an AARP survey found 1 in 5 adults over the age of 40 were “socially disconnected,” which can impact health. People who reportedly experienced loneliness and isolation had lower mental well-being scores, and those who were dissatisfied with their level of social engagement were more likely to report a decline in cognitive function, as well. While anyone can benefit from a kind gesture, seniors are some of the most in-need members in many communities. There is likely a wide range of opportunities to enhance the lives of seniors in your area. Numerous programs and agencies exist to help you determine the best way to make a difference.

On Aug. 9, 1974, Richard Nixon officially resigns as president of the United States, departing in a helicopter from the White House lawn. Minutes later, Vice President Gerald Ford was sworn in. Ford spoke in a television address, declaring, "My fellow Americans, our long national nightmare is over." On Aug. 10, 1937, the electric guitar is recognized by the United States Patent Office with the award of Patent No. 2,089.171 for the Rickenbacker Frying Pan. The guitar used a heavy electromagnet that surrounded the base of the steel strings like a bracelet. On Aug. 11, 1806, explorer Meriwether Lewis is shot in the hip, probably by one of his own men. Private Cruzatte, who was blind in one eye and nearsighted in the other, insisted he had not shot his captain. Lewis, however, had the offending bullet: A .54 caliber slug from a modern U.S. Army rifle, identical to the one carried by Cruzatte.

One example is Ready to Care, an initiative from Home Instead Senior Care that challenges people to complete weekly care missions. Each activity guides members through various ways to give to senior-related causes, learn about the aging crisis and issues impacting seniors, and serve seniors through small actions of kindness. Most care missions are simple acts, such as opening a door, learning about Alzheimer’s or helping with a chore. Each week, a new mission is delivered to participants’ phones via text message. Small gestures, like these simple acts of kindness, can go a long way toward improving a senior’s day. Physical assistance: Most seniors are eager to retain their independence, but everyday tasks can pose fall risks or require exposure to harsh weather conditions that can be dangerous to older adults. • Offer to bring in the daily newspaper or mail. • Mow their lawn or offer to help with other yardwork. • Lend a hand in caring for pets, such as taking a dog for a walk or helping clean up waste from the yard. • Offer moral support and a sense of physical safety by volunteering to join them on a walk. Social support: Loneliness is common among seniors, especially those who live alone. Show seniors in your area they have a meaningful place in the community and options for companionship. • Offer a friendly wave and say hello when you see them out. • Invite them to dinner, either at your home or at a restaurant. • Have your children or kids you know in the area draw pictures or write letters. • Make a date for an afternoon or evening of entertainment, such as cards, a movie or board games. Practical solutions: For various reasons, some seniors may be unable to complete everyday tasks. Offer a helping hand in their daily routines when possible. • Lend your time to take them to run errands. • Deliver baked goods or a home-cooked meal to improve access to nourishing foods. • Help arrange for professional assistance and services, such as an audit to ensure homes are safe GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Master

Gardeners I am an avid wild life lover. I feed all the birds and critters. Recently, a hawk has discovered my Bird feeders and stalks it. It has killed numerous birds around my feeders. I have tried plastic owls, pinwheels, next is a scarecrow. I have numerous trees which is a perfect cover for it to swoop in & attack the birds. I have even moved my feeders near and underneath a tree to protect them. But this hawk is a great stalker! Please help! – Anna

from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County vary for this length of time needed so is not absolute. Moving the feeder under a tree makes it more attractive to the hawk since it will watch to see where the birds go. The trees will just shelter the hawk from other birds such as crows which might attack it. Leaving feeders in the open is a better location since it allows the small birds a chance to see and escape the hawk. Obviously at this point, that is not an effective solution.

How do you help flowers withstand heat waves?

• Water at the appropriate times of day. The National Gardening Association notes that it’s best to water in the early morning and evening because less water will be lost to The best thing is to take down the feeders evaporation during these times of day than for a month to give the hawk incentive to during the afternoon, when temperatures look elsewhere for food. Recommendations tend to be at their hottest.

• Choose the right watering method. It’s not just when but also how you water that can affect flowers during summer heat waves. Aboveground sprinklers might be great for lawns, but the NGA notes that such sprinklers can encourage the spread of disease on certain plants, including roses. Many gardening professionals recommend soaker hoses when watering flowers because they promote deep watering that can help the plants withstand the summer heat. If you must use an overheard watering system, set the timer so plants are watered in

early in the morning or evening. • Routinely check the soil moisture. Soil moisture can help gardeners determine if their flowers have enough water to withstand the heat. The NGA advises gardeners to dig a 12-inch deep wedge of soil from their gardens to determine its moisture levels. If the top six inches of the soil is dry, water. If that area is still wet or moist, the plants have enough moisture to withstand the heat. Check these moisture levels more frequently during heat waves than other times of year. - Answer from Metro Creative

Simplify vacations and savor the fun Leave work behind. The United States is one of the few countries that does not guarantee paid days off. The Center for Economic and Policy Research says one in four working Americans do not get paid time off. The employment site Glassdoor notes that among those who do get paid vacations, 75 percent of employees chose not to use all of their time in 2013. By comparison, Canadians get an average of 19 days of vacation time per year. Stress about making up work or falling behind makes some professionals worry about using their vacation time, and those who do travel may stay connected to the office in some shape or form. Splitting time between leisure and work responsibilities on a vacation can be taxing and take away from the time you need to relax and recharge. Cut work ties and immerse yourself in the vacation experience.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A chaotic atmosphere taxes the patience of the Aries Lamb, who prefers to deal with a more orderly environment. Best advice: Stay out of the situation until things settle. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Tension runs high in both personal and workplace relationships. This can make it difficult to get your message across. Best to wait until you have a more receptive audience. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) This is a good time to take a break from your busy schedule to plan for some well-deserved socializing. You could get news about an important personal matter by the week’s end. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) An offer of help could come just when you seem to need it. But be careful about saying yes to anything that might have conditions attached that could cause problems down the line. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Sometimes a workplace colleague can’t be charmed into supporting the Lion’s position. That’s when it’s time to shift tactics and overwhelm the doubter with the facts. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You continue to earn respect for your efforts to help someone close to you stand up to a bully. But be careful that in pushing this matter you don’t start to do some bullying yourself. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Don’t ask others if they think you’re up to a new responsibility. Having faith in your own abilities is the key to dealing with a challenge. P.S.: That “private” matter needs your attention. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) This is a good time to use that Scorpian creativity to come up with something special that will help get your derailed career plans back on track and headed in the right direction. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) While change is favored, it could be a good idea to carefully weigh the possible fallout as well as the benefits of any moves before you make them. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The Goat continues to create a stir by following his or her own path. Just be sure you keep your focus straight and avoid any distractions that could cause you to make a misstep. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A colleague’s demands seem out of line. But before reacting one way or another, talk things out and see how you might resolve the problem and avoid future misunderstandings. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A personal matter appears to be making more demands on your time than you feel you’re ready to give. See if some compromise can be reached before things get too dicey. BORN THIS WEEK: You’re able to communicate feelings better than most people. Have you considered a career in the pulpit or in politics?

How households earn their income has changed dramatically over the last several decades. According to a Pew Research Centeral analysis of the Decennial Census and American Community Surveys integrated Public Use Microdata Sample files, in 1960 only fathers worked in 70 percent of American households. That figure has dropped in each ensuing decade and by 2012 fathers were the sole earners in just 31 percent of American households. While one in four households in American were dual income households in 1960, by 2012 that figure had risen to 60 percent. While those figures represent dramatic changes, the number of households in which mothers are the sole earners has not changed all that much since 1960. In 1960, mothers were the sole earners in just 2 percent of American households. Fifty-two years later 6 percent of American households featured mothers as the sole earners.

GET ORGANIZED AND IMPROVE WORKPLACE PRODUCTIVITY Many working professionals aspire to be as productive as possible. In working environments where employees are forced to wear many hats, efficiency can help workers meet their deadlines and get tasks accomplished. Organization can help professionals keep track of their work assignments and stay on schedule. Staying organized does not come naturally to everyone, and those finding it difficult to juggle various assignments at once can try the following strategies to stay organized and increase their productivity. Stop multitasking. While it can seem counterintuitive for people with a lot on their plates to stop multitasking, researchers at the University of Utah found that performance suffers when people try to do more than one thing at a time. While researchers discovered that a small percentage of people they dubbed “supertaskers” were capable of multitasking without adversely affecting their performance, the vast majority of people should avoid trying to tackle more than one task at a time. Professionals can work on different projects throughout the day, but allot time for each project rather than trying to work on several at once. Schedule each day. Establishing a schedule and making it as accessible as possible is another way to stay organized and increase productivity. Professionals can make use of scheduling apps on their tablets or smartphones, even setting alerts so they do not forget about projects or meetings. Routinely check the schedule throughout the day, marking off tasks as they’re completed. Cut back on time spent in meetings. A 2014 survey from AtTask conducted by Harris Poll reported that American workers at companies with 1,000 employees or more spend just 45 percent of their workdays tending to their primary job duties. Survey participants reported spending 40 percent of their time in meetings, tending to administrative tasks and dealing with interruptions. In lieu of in-person meetings, professionals can discuss projects via mass emails, which can be a much more efficient means to organizing and discussing a project than sitting in a room several times per week. Take breaks throughout the workday. Busy professionals may feel as though they don’t have time for breaks during a typical workday. But such breaks can benefit workers in ways they might be unaware. For example, the Association for Psychological Science notes that research has shown that building breaks into a workday helps professionals stay sharp and productive. And when workers take their breaks matters, too. Researchers at Baylor University discovered that mid-morning breaks were more beneficial than late afternoon breaks. Staying organized and increasing productivity at work go hand in hand. Professionals tasked with juggling multiple responsibilities can employ various strategies to be better organized and get more done in less time.
