PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM

Employment ____________________22

Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green. ~Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mosses from and Old Manse

WHAT SCHOOLS ARE DOING ABOUT CHILDHOOD OBESITY Modifying school lunch offerings: Schools are taking inventory of not only the foods they offer on lunch menus, but also the feel of the cafeteria so that healthy eating is encouraged. This may include removing vending machines that contain unhealthy snacks or providing a greater array of offerings that include fresh fruits, whole grains and lean protein sources. Some schools also are investing in components, such as salad bars, to store, prepare and display healthy foods.

Gardeners Would you kindly tell me why my hydrangeas will not bloom? I have a blue one - it had two flowers this year. I did give them the proper food to turn them blue - and they were blue. I also have a pink and red one. They have not bloomed in a number of years. I do leave the wood until the following spring. I do not trim them back in the fall. My oak leaf hydrangeas bloom beautifully. Any suggestions? They are in the front of the house and face west. Thank you! - Lisa D.

from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County

Your problem with a non-blooming macrophyla (big leaf) hydrangea is common. This plant has hardy roots, but the buds are not very hardy. They get frozen during the winter or are sometimes munched off by deer. Fluctuating temperatures during the winter have made this problem worse. Sometimes, these plants bloom for the first few years then the blooms diminish. You can try surrounding it with a wire cage, then filling it with mulched fall leaves to provide more winter protection. The website Hy-

Mask Makers: COVID’s Everyday Heroes: Part I BY AMANDA DUDEK

T

o wear masks or not to wear masks has become the question lately. No matter where you stand there is no denying the care and selflessness shown by those at home who gave, and continue to give, their time, resources and talents to make masks for those in need. Five of these unsung heroes in Livingston and Ontario Counties open up about their maskmaking journeys. Linda Richards – York When the pandemic resulted in a shutdown, Personal Trainer Linda Richards went from working 16-hour days to having a great deal of free time. “I thought, what do I do Linda Richards (right) made many headbands with my life?” said and masks with lots of help from Linda only half-joking. Linda Nicastro (left)! “I needed to help at a time when I felt helpless.” She began making headbands and straps with buttons to relieve ears from mask straps. “We called it Save the Ears!” she said. Linda’s efforts soon caught on. “I made 25 buttoned headbands to start with,” she recalled. “People found them via Facebook and word-ofmouth and began asking for them.” Almost immediately, a lack of supplies and closed stores became an issue; help came from across state lines. “I had a Facebook friend who reached out and began sending me headbands and other materials from Texas,” shared Linda. “Some people sewed a few, as well.”

These headbands, made by Linda Richards, have buttons sewn on them to relieve ears from mask straps!

Now, Linda, with a lot of help from a friend, has made over 1,000 headbands. She has sent them all over the country and to Puerto Rico. “We have used some unique and unusual buttons, so sometimes, we will see someone wearing a headband we are pretty sure is ours. I also just made headbands for kids who are going back to school. It was fun!”

fabric.” Deborah is continuing to make masks while there is need. “I have connected with different organizations, put some in shops and have people stop by,” she explained. Deborah welcomes anyone in need to reach out to her. Karen Schenk – Naples Across the Livingston-Ontario County line in Naples lives Karen Schenk. When she saw masks being Deborah Wolfanger displays sold for high prices, Karen knew she some of the numerous, had to do something to help people in colorful masks she has made! need, especially those who didn’t have extra money. Her clever solution would help in more ways than one. “A friend encouraged me to make some masks, and it just went viral,” explained Karen. “I posted a picture, and everyone loved them. So, I began giving the masks away for free, and asking people to donate whatever they could for me to give to Naples Angels, an organization which helps those in the community who are struggling to pay their bills.

Karen has raised more than $300 for Naples Angels. Her masks can now be found at Joseph’s Market in Naples with the profits continuing to support the local organization, although they frequently sell out more quickly than she can make them. She plans to continue making them as long as people request them. “It is so rewarding to be able to help people in need, both those who need masks and those who need help paying their One of Karen Schenk’s masks made with bills.” material from Sutton Spoons in Naples!

Deborah Wolfanger – Dansville Quietly, outside the Village of Dansville, Deborah Wolfanger works steadily making masks. She offers them for free of charge to anyone in need and welcomes people to stop by for masks. In fact, she donated over 120 of them to a local hygiene bank. “There was a need,” said Deborah. “The community has been so giving, and those who have received masks have been so thankful.”

Karen Schenk makes masks and sends the donations for them to Naples Angels!

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Cooking a recipe with garlic and onions to start? Invite me to dinner! But first, remember to let the onions cook to nearly translucent before adding the garlic, which cooks much faster. If you put both in at the same time, the garlic will burn before the onions have a chance to deepen their flavor. * Automatic toilets are great for not having to touch the handles, but they can be scary for kids -- and some adults too, if I’m being honest. Try putting a sticky note over the sensor so that it will not flush until you take it off, giving you some control. * “For chores, I write tasks on sticky notes and put them up on our family board. The kids choose the things they want to do, and when they are done to my satisfaction I sign their ticket. At the end of the week, they can bring me the tickets to pay out. This is for extra money, so they don’t have to do it; I don’t have to chase them, and I don’t have to keep track of it either.” -- E.L. in Montana * Every so often, use a very diluted bleach solution to rinse out your reusable water bottles. Put them on a bottle rack to air dry completely before sealing them back up.

* The first webcam was created to check a coffeepot! In 1993, researchers in the University of Cambridge’s computer science department really didn’t like getting up from their chairs to check the coffeepot just to find it empty, so they wired a system that would stream three images per minute from the Trojan Room, where the pot was kept, to the internal computer network. By the end of that year, the stream made it onto the new World Wide Web, endowing the Trojan Room coffeepot with international, if brief, fame. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Diet Is Powerful Tool to Boost Heart Health --DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a strong history of premature heart disease in my family, and I have been having some unpleasant side effects of blood pressure medicine. I decided to try a completely plant-based diet: grains, vegetables, legumes, fruit, seeds and nuts. After about a month on the new diet, my total cholesterol dropped 44 points to 159, and the other numbers went from borderline to normal, as measured by my cardiologist. My blood pressure, which was often high in the mornings (typically 150+/90), was 118/68 this morning. I’ve only lost about 5 pounds in the past couple of months, and I’m probably still 8-10 pounds overweight. I am pleased with the results, but why didn’t any of my doctors recommend this? -- J.S.B. ANSWER: Diet is a powerful tool for improving overall health, especially heart health. I believe it is underemphasized by most physicians. Changing from a meat-based diet to a mostly plant-based diet often prompts improvements in blood pressure, cholesterol and weight. Your results are better than most, but by no means unheard of. You haven’t said how you feel, but many people feel more energetic as well. Many others are able to come off of some (occasionally all) of their medications, which of course reduces side effects. Why don’t physicians recommend it? I think it’s a combination of reasons. Some doctors don’t realize how powerful the effects of dietary change can be. A good deal of patients are highly resistant to making changes, so physicians are used to their dietary advice failing. Also, taking the time to get an accurate diet history is hard, personalizing dietary advice is harder, and writing a prescription is easy. It is not necessary to have a 100% vegan diet like yours to experience a benefit. A mostly plant-based diet has substantial benefits. It’s easier for some people to make incremental changes. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I’ve been taking Viagra for several years with good results for my wife and me. Recently my prescription drug coverage administrator has begun restricting my access to 12 pills every 30 days. I’ve requested an explanation from the company without success. My prescription is written by my heart doctor, and he is not aware of any reason to restrict my access to Viagra. Is there some danger in taking Viagra (sildenafil) on a regular basis? The literature supplied with the prescription, from Pfizer, does not indicate a limit on use. I’d appreciate your feedback on this, as it will affect my wife’s and my happiness. -- J.R. ANSWER: The insurance company isn’t worried about your safety: Sildenafil (Viagra) and similar drugs are safe for daily use in most people, and your cardiologist is certainly the right person to make that determination, not your insurance company. Instead, the drug limits are there to save money for the insurance company. People can make up their own minds about whether that is reasonable or not, but it is a near-universal finding now. One way many patients get around this (if they are taking 25 mg or 50 mg) is to get the larger-size tablet and cut it in half (a pill cutter can do this well), since the limit is on the number of tablets, not the number of milligrams. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Sept. 18, 1793, George Washington lays the cornerstone to the United States Capitol building. It would take nearly a century to complete, as architects came and went, the British set fire to it and it was called into use during the Civil War. * On Sept. 19, 1969, President Richard Nixon announces the cancellation of the draft calls for November and December. He reduced the call-up by 50,000 men as part of his program of turning the war over to the South Vietnamese. * On Sept. 20, 1973, in a highly publicized “Battle of the Sexes” tennis match, top women’s player Billie Jean King, 29, beats Bobby Riggs, 55, a former No. 1 ranked men’s player. Riggs had boasted that women were inferior, and that even at his age he could beat any female player. King beat Riggs 6-4, 6-3, 6-3.

be healing, Rog should be fine. Check the area once a day and reapply antibacterial ointment. If it begins to appear puffy and red, or Rog seems very distressed by it, take him to the vet for further evaluation. Most minor scratches on a dog’s skin and paws can be treated at home using the household first-aid kit. You also can build a pet first-aid kit that is easy to access when you walk into the house. In addition to antibacterial ointment (avoid products with hydrocortisone), it should have antiseptic solution, water-based lubricant like KY (not Vaseline), clean towels, an empty squeeze bottle (like a ketchup bottle), tick-removal tweezers, a muzzle, small scissors and a disposable razor to gently remove fur. (Electric clippers are an even safer option.) To treat a small scratch or cut, fill the squeeze bottle with lukewarm water. Hold your dog securely, placing a muzzle on him to prevent bites if he gets agitated. Trim or shave away hair from the area. Gently clean the wound using the squeeze bottle of water. Pat dry. Dab the antiseptic onto the wound, then apply antibiotic ointment. Cover lightly with a bandage if possible; otherwise, prevent your dog from licking away the ointment for at least 10 minutes. Check and reapply ointment daily as it heals. RUSH-HENRIETTA EDITION

WALGREENS IS THE BEST! Mary Ann is always so nice and kind at the checkout counter. She was one of the main reasons why I started going to Walgreen’s in Brockport. She is very capable when it comes to voiding items that will not be accepted on my insurance card. Not only does she do her job very well, but she is always very pleasant. From what I have experienced since shopping at Walgreens for the past 10 months, they seem to train their employees not only to do an excellent job, but also to treat their customers the way customers should be

treated. Keep up the good work! It does not go unnoticed, and it is very much appreciated, especially during these difficult times. Thank you!

MUSIC My suggestion to the person who hates neighbor playing music is to re-locate in the country where you will not have to contend with anyone and anything. Do dogs barking bother you? How about children in a neighbor’s yard? You should be ashamed of yourself for complaining about such a trivial thing. There are so many more serious issues in this world. Consider yourself blessed if the worst thing your neighbors are doing is playing music. Perhaps if you listen to some music, it will bring you much needed relief for whatever is going on in your mind.
