TECH TO TAKE ALONG ON YOUR NEXT ROAD TRIP Chargers: Many people feel their devices are extensions of themselves, but such devices won’t be of much help if they are routinely running out of power. Bring along several chargers that can be plugged into your car so you and your passengers can keep your smartphones and other devices running throughout the trip. Though the idea of going off the grid might seem enticing, leaving the world behind is less romantic when you need roadside assistance or are in search of a restroom or a place to pull over and grab a meal. If you want to disconnect from the world, you can always switch your phone to airplane mode. But keeping the phone charged can help in case of emergency.

AUTO SECTION

Family size : The size and potential size of the family also must be considered before buying a new car. Kids grow up and get bigger, and parents w ho w ant to have more children dow n the road should consider just how big they w ant their family to be before buying a new car. Look for a car that not only suits your family now, but one that w ill cater to your family’s needs dow n the road as w ell. Overlooking this important factor now may force you to replace the car you ultimately buy sooner than you had hoped.

LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY Crowd control: Local restaurants tend to be smaller and more intimate than many chain restaurants. This can translate into a calm dining experience. When crowds are small, the noise level inside the restaurant may be muted and service may be fast because there aren’t as many tables to serve. Furthermore, local establishments, although concerned about making a profit, may be less worried about table turnover rate, preferring to let diners linger if it means repeat business.

Mouth-Watering Stuffed Mushrooms Prep Time: 45 min Servings: 6 12 whole fresh mushrooms, washed 1 T. vegetable oil 1 T. garlic, minced 1 (8 oz.) pkg. cream cheese, softened 1/4 c. grated Parmesan cheese 1/4 t. ground black pepper 1/4 t. onion powder 1/4 t. ground cayenne pepper Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Carefully break off mushroom stems and chop until extremely fine. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add mushroom stems and garlic and fry until no moisture remains, taking care not to burn garlic. Set aside to cool. Combine cream cheese, Parmesan cheese, black pepper, onion powder and cayenne pepper. Stuff each mushroom cap with cheese mixture and arrange on a greased cookie sheet. Bake for 20 minutes, or until mushrooms are piping hot and liquid starts to form under caps. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Five Ways To A Better Move (NAPS)—The next time you’re among the estimated 40 million Americans a year who move into a new home, heeding these five hints can help you stress less: 1. Know what’s happening when. Make a list of everything you need to do and when you need to do it. It should include budgeting, decluttering, hiring movers, buying supplies, and updating medical and financial records. 2. Keep all your critical move-related names, phone numbers and addresses in one document. You may want to store them in your smartphone and have a hard copy. Be sure you can easily access your moving contract, real estate and mortgage documents, as well as information you may need about utilities, banks and schools. 3. Have a first-night box. Once you’re in your new home, you don’t want to have to hunt for such things as box cutters, tools, device chargers, bed linens, shower curtains, toiletries—and the coffeepot. 4. Stay connected to what matters most—family, friends, Internet, Wi-Fi and TV. Arrange your services in advance of your move at CableMover.com. 5. Get help. For a one-stop, customizable way to stay organized, there’s the Moving Guide from CableMover, downloadable at www.cablemover.com.

It was heart wrenching and inspiring to watch the two of you as you treated her with compassion and dignity. God bless you, as I am sure you have many difficult days.

To the woman at the local ENT office on Monday, September 9th. You sat totally attentive as an older woman (your mom?) who obviously lives with dementia read you a story that any 5 or 6-year-old would have loved. The lady interacted with you as if you were a young child.

It was a not a theft but a mistake, and we’d really like them back. If someone brought home picnic benches and said they were free on the side of the road - older but nicely varnished - it was not the case! We understand the mistake, please be kind and return them.

To the person complaining about places that offer parking to parents of small children and pregnant women: please focus on something better to take the time to complain about. “Too lazy” is not the reason the spots exist. First, congratulations that you trucked your three kids through a parking lot, walking long distances. Second, those spots exist for people who may be on bed rest but must take the kids to the store because that’s what us mothers must do. Maybe it is for the women who just gave birth Those that feel entitled four days ago and have not to demand respect and honor, when they have none even recovered enough to themselves and lack integrity, be walking long distances. As for drive up groceries and grocery delivery, get with the times! Where is our local village public works dept? They are MIA. I haven’t seen or heard anything of the trucks or big frontend loader that they overuse for small piles of brush. Brush has laid on the lawn for over 1 week, killing the grass, but if it’s put out late, the police give you warnings about fines. Poor service and high taxes. Your complaint is that a lawn was being mowed in the late evening, when you had seen the resident’s car in the driveway all day. This is just to make you aware that some people work from home. Just because their car is in their driveway doesn’t

Page 9

mean that they have the whole day to tend to yard work. Furthermore, some people work from home during the day and then work 40 minutes from home in the evening. So, it is very difficult to find time to mow the lawn during “acceptable” times. My town has a noise ordinance that does not begin until 11pm; therefore, mowing the lawn at 9:30pm is within those guidelines. Please consider other possible situations before ranting to the public, or perhaps approach that neighbor to share your concern. They may be able to explain.

Leaves cascading dow n from trees indicate the arrival of autumn. How ever, colorful and aw e-inspiring autumn leaves can be a hazard if left to lie on the ground too long. Fallen leaves form a dense insulator to protect trees’ roots and prevent competing plants from grow ing. Decomposing leaves also provide nutrients for the tree. But w et leaves can be a safety hazard and leaves left on the law n through the w inter can pose a threat to the grass. These are just a couple of reasons w hy so much effort is placed on leaf clean-up in the fall.

CBD Oil Can Interfere With Other Medications

Convenient Brighton location 200 White Spruce Blvd • Suite 128 • Rochester

---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 49-year-old woman who had a massive heart attack in April. My father died of a massive heart attack at 49. I have four stents in three arteries and am on Brilinta, low-dose aspirin, blood pressure medication, etc. I have essential tremor, first noticing the tremors in middle school. The tremor is in my hands, making writing nearly impossible, and I have head bobs. I have an internal tremor that never stops. A previous practitioner prescribed a month’s trial of beta blockers several years ago. I noticed no relief with the tremor but was physically ill for the first 30 minutes of the morning in the first two weeks. Recently, I found an online blog regarding essential tremor and CBD oil. Nearly all of the bloggers found some level of relief using this treatment. If I choose to try CBD oil to assist with my tremor, is there a risk of it interfering with my heart and blood pressure medications? -- M.M. ANSWER: Cannabidiol, or CBD, is a nonpsychoactive substance found in Cannabis, as opposed to tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the best-known psychoactive component. CBD is typically sold as an oil and has been receiving press as a potential treatment for a wide variety of medical issues. Many or most of these claims have no data to support them. Anecdotal reports, such as most blogs, are neither reliable nor scientific (and may or may not be true). There also is an issue with proving the dosage and purity of products said to contain CBD. However, in the case of essential tremor, there is some evidence: Studies in mice have shown benefit with CBD, although a single case report showed effectiveness of THC but not CBD in essential tremor. The issue of drug interactions is a significant one. CBD inhibits two powerful pathways the body uses to detoxify drugs, the CPY3A4 and CYP2D6 systems. This is a serious issue for you. Ticagrelor (Brilinta), an anticoagulant, is metabolized by CYP3A4, as are some of the statin drugs usually prescribed to people with heart blockages. The effect of the anticoagulant could be much higher than expected, leading to bleeding risk. Other commonly used heart medications are metabolized by CYP2D6, and the effect on these medications is unpredictable. I can’t recommend CBD products given the medications you are taking, but would suggest you consider alternative treatments. DEAR DR. ROACH: This question is for my husband. How safe is drinking tea while on warfarin? He has his INR checked monthly, and for the most part it stays between 2 and 3. He watches his vitamin K intake regularly. He has read conflicting stories of how tea interacts with warfarin by making the INR levels high. -- S.J. ANSWER: Tea comes in two major types: black tea, which is fermented, and green tea, which is not. Black tea has no known interactions with warfarin (Coumadin). Green tea contains small amounts of vitamin K, which could make the INR lower and the warfarin less effective. However, the effect is likely to be small. Further, if he drinks a consistent amount per day, his dose can be adjusted to reflect his vitamin K intake. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel

Health screenings men should discuss with their physicians Routine doctor visits are a vital component of a healthy lifestyle. As noted by the U.S. National Library of Medicine, even men who feel healthy and live active lifestyles must make routine visits to their healthcare providers. Such visits can assess risk for future medical problems and offer men the opportunity to update vaccinations. Routine health checkups also give doctors a chance to screen for medical issues. Doctors consider a man’s age and other risk factors to determine when and how frequently he will need certain medical screenings. For example, while men between the ages of 40 and 64 are often advised to get blood pressure screenings at least once per year, those with diabetes, heart disease, kidney problems, and other conditions may need more frequent screenings. No two men have the same medical histories, which only highlights the need for men of all ages to schedule annual physical exams with their physicians. Such exams can reveal potential problems and also make for great opportunities to discuss more specific medical screenings with their physicians. The following are some general screening tests and guidelines recommended for all men between the ages of 40 and 64, courtesy of the USNLM. Prostate cancer - The USNLM notes that most men age 50 or older should discuss screening for prostate cancer with their physicians. Ethnicity and family history are some of the recognized risk factors for prostate cancer. As a result, African American men and men with a family history of prostate cancer in a first degree relative younger than 65 should discuss screenings beginning at age 45. There are pros and cons to prostate cancer screenings, and these should be part of men’s discussions with their physicians. Colorectal cancer - All men between the ages of 50 and 75 should be screened for colorectal cancer. Physicians may recommend colorectal screening for men under age 50 with a family history of colon cancer or polyps. In addition, physicians may consider screenings for men under 50 who have a history of inflammatory bowel disease. Cholesterol - The USNLM advises men to have their cholesterol levels checked every five years. Men with certain conditions, such as diabetes and heart disease, may need to be checked more often. Diabetes - Diabetes screenings are recommended every three years for men age 45 and older. Men who are overweight and younger than 45 should ask their physicians if they should be screened before they reach 45. Osteoporosis - Women are more likely to develop osteoporosis than men, but that doesn’t mean men are immune to this condition marked by a weakening of the bones due to tissue loss. Fractures after age 50, heavy alcohol use, smoking, and low body weight are some risk factors that can make men vulnerable to osteoporosis. Health screenings can catch diseases and other conditions in their early stages when they’re most treatable. Such screenings should be a vital part of men’s health routines. * On Sept. 23, 1969, the trial for eight antiwar activists charged with sparking violent demonstrations at the August 1968 Democratic National Convention opens in Chicago. Most were convicted on criminal charges or contempt of court, but none served time after convictions eventually were overturned on appeal or charges dropped. * On Sept. 24, 1941, the Japanese consul in Hawaii is instructed to divide Pearl Harbor into five zones and calculate the number of battleships in each zone. The United States had intercepted the message, but it was dismissed a month later as being of no great consequence. * On Sept. 27, 1540, in Rome, the Society of Jesus -- a Roman Catholic missionary organization -- receives its charter from Pope Paul III. The Jesuit order succeeded in converting millions around the world to Catholicism.

GENERAL CONTRACTING HOROSCOPE

BENEFITS OF HIRING PROFESSIONAL CONTRACTORS Resale value: Many homeowners renovate their homes with eyes on improving the resale value of those homes. But if homeowners want to showcase a newly remodeled kitchen when selling their homes, they should be prepared for prospective buyers to ask who worked on the project. Fearing potential problems down the road, some buyers might be put off by homes that were remodeled by DIYers and not professional contractors.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Travel plans could be interrupted by the re-emergence of a workplace problem that was never quite fully resolved. Deal with it at once, and then take off on that well-deserved trip. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Aspects favor cultural activities for sensuous Bovines. Attend a concert or an art show. Better yet, create something yourself (a poem, perhaps?), and dedicate it to someone special. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Respect any doubts you might now be feeling about a new situation. They could be reflecting your inner awareness that some essential information might be missing. Check it out. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) It’s important to start the new month with as clean a slate as possible. Either complete all those unfinished tasks or pass them on to others who would be more than happy to take them on. LEO (July 23 to August 22) This is a good time to cut down on expenses and tame that urge to splurge. Applying some financial discipline now could help the Big Cat ride out a possible monetary crunch later on. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Money matters are dominant this week. Recheck your accounts and make sure they’re up-todate. Also, pay more attention to personal issues before they become major problems. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You might be tempted to employ the same tactics as your adversary, but that could backfire. Better to use the same balanced approach that has worked for you before and could again. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A changing workplace environment could stir up confusion as well as apprehension. Best to ignore the rumors and get the facts. You could find that the changes bring positive elements. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Communication is easier this week with people ready and eager to hear what you have to say. Also, check for possible technical problems before you start your new project. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Aspects favor change for the usually traditional Goat. Opening your mind to possibilities you had ignored could lead you to make decisions you once considered improbable. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Making personal as well as professional adjustments to changing conditions might be easier with more information explaining the “hows” and “whys” of the situations in question. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) With a growing tide of positive reactions to buoy your confidence, this could be the right time to put the finishing touches to your new project and get it well and truly launched. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a gift for setting an example of quiet, calm reasoning in the midst of chaotic conditions. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

PROTECT YOUR HOME FROM WINTER’S FREEZE Plumbing Plumbing and pipes may be vulnerable to cold weather. Frozen pipes may burst and cause substantial damage to a home, potentially causing flooding and structural damage. Homeowners should disconnect and drain garden hoses before winter arrives. Water to outdoor hose bibs should be turned off, though the valves on these outdoor faucets should be left open to drain. Also, outdoor faucets can be covered with insulating foam covers. The Red Cross says pipes that freeze most frequently include pipes in unheated areas, such as basements, attics, garages, and crawl spaces. Close vents to the outside in areas like attics and basements to limit the amount of cold air that gets indoors. Think about insulating unheated areas, as well as using pipe sleeves, heat tape or wraps on exposed pipes.

Moving Day Rochester, A Walk for Parkinson’s Disease, Raises Funds and Awareness By Kimberly Collins, Revised

T

he Parkinson’s Foundation (PF) will host its annual Moving Day Rochester, A Walk for Parkinson’s, at Monroe Community College on Sunday, September 29, 2019. This year’s goal for the Rochester chapter is $190,000! This is one of more than forty grassroots events taking place across the country this year. Funds raised through Moving Day will support cuttingedge research and community programs to improve the lives of people with Parkinson’s disease and their families. “My husband was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in March of 2008 at the age of 58. He participated in a U of R research study for several months while he was not taking any medication. His primary symptoms were not tremors, and he has never had any tremors. His PD has affected the right side of his body with rigidity, and now he is having mobility and balance issues. I have lost my walking partner, but he is amazing. He goes to the gym every other day and has great will and determination. One of the main changes to both of our lives is that we are no longer able to travel. We went on our last river cruise on the Rhine River in 2010.” - Marilyn C. One million Americans are living with Parkinson’s, with 60,000 people newly diagnosed each year. Moving Day Rochester is a fun and inspiring fundraising event that unites the community in the fight against Parkinson’s. Moving Day events across the country have raised nearly $22 million dollars to improve care and advance research toward a cure. “Moving Day is fun. It is great exercise, and it’s educational,” said Kim Collins, Development Manager for the Parkinson’s Foundation. “But mostly, the support of the community enables us to continue to make meaningful improvements in the lives of those with Parkinson’s.” More than just a walk, Moving Day Rochester is a celebration of

than 145,000 people living with Parkinson’s in the Rochester region, providing free resources and local services for them and their families, and funding cutting-edge research to advance toward a cure. To learn more about Moving Day and how you, your family and friends, and/or your company can get involved, please visit www.movingdayrochester. org. Moving Day is made possible, in part, through the generous support of Boxing at the Movement Pavilion national partners Adamas, Acorda, Right at Home, Amneal, Acadia and Lundbeck, as well as our local sponsors US WorldMeds, Palmers Food Services, Mapco Parking, Pellittiere & Jonsson and Harter Secrest and Emery. About the Parkinson’s Foundation: The Parkinson’s Foundation makes life better for people with Parkinson’s disease by improving care and advancing research toward a cure. In everything we do, we build on the energy, experience and passion of our global Parkinson’s community. For more information, visit www.parkinson.org or call (800) 4PD-INFO (473-4636). About Parkinson’s Disease: Affecting an estimated one million Americans and 10 million worldwide, Parkinson’s disease is the second-most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer’s and is the 14thleading cause of death in the United States. It is associated with a progressive loss of motor control (e.g., shaking or tremor at rest and lack of facial expression), as well as non-motor symptoms (e.g., depression and anxiety). There is no cure for Parkinson’s, and 60,000 new cases are diagnosed each year in the United States alone.

Fred Schwab of Atlanta, NY, who has Parkinson’s, is preparing to participate in this year’s walk with a team. He already completed a triathalon earlier this year and raised more than $4,000. “Living each day with Parkinson’s can be challenging, but better treatments, programs and research make all the difference. Participating in events always gives me hope and reminds me I’m not alone,” said Schwab. On the whole I take it that middle age is a happier period than youth. In the entire circle of the year there are no days so delightful as those of a fine October, when the trees are bare to the mild heavens, and the red leaves bestrew the road, and you can feel the breath of winter morning and evening—no days so calm, so tenderly solemn, and with such a reverent meekness in the air. ~Alexander Smith (1829–1867), “An Essay on an Old Subject”

SHOW ADMINISTRATIVE PROFESSIONALS THEY ARE APPRECIATED Business owners and bosses and high-level executives may have their names on placards or monogrammed stationery, but the most successful businesses tend to be those in which the entire staff, from the company president to administrative professionals and so on, works together. Administrative professionals, sometimes referred to as “admins,” handle everything from spreadsheet generation to PowerPoint presentations to preparing schedules. Admins are often the unsung heroes of the workplace, and while they may not receive much fanfare, without the continued efforts of admins, businesses may grind to a halt. In recognition of the roles they play, administrative professionals have been honored during a special week each April for the past 60 years. Called Secretary’s Day upon its inception in 1952, the holiday was later expanded and the name changed to incorporate all of the employees who play pivotal administrative rolls in companies big and small. Administrative professionals do a lot to keep companies afloat and operating smoothly. Supervisors, managers and other higher-ups can take every opportunity to show their appreciation to these hard, yet often unsung, workers.
