* Have your carpets cleaned. Hightraffic areas may require cleaning as often as every three or four months, but bedrooms can go as long as 18 months. Use runners and area rugs to safeguard spots that may be vulnerable, like under a vanity or by your sofas. * “I had some residue on my bathroom ceiling from hard water condensation. I happened to have a set of crutches lying around. I used a hair elastic to secure a hand towel to the arm rest of one crutch. Then I sprayed it with water and used it to scrub the ceiling. It worked really well. I was done in no time.” -- A.A. in Florida * Two ways to remove a bandage: Rub a little baby oil or vegetable oil over it. The oil will soak in and make it easier to remove. Or -- and this works especially well with kids -- have them soak in the bath and use baby shampoo to soften the sticky edges. * A baking soda and water mix is great for tile floors if you want a quick mop up. If a lot of your floors are tile, do yourself a favor and invest in a steam mop. They clean and sanitize, leaving your floors brilliant. * Be sure you use a trivet or other protectant when placing flowerpots on wood floors. Also, purchase felt pads for the bottoms of furniture. This will eliminate divots or other kinds of depressions or scratches in the floor. * “Tiny tears in your window screen can be secured with clear nail polish. I dab the spot, then use tweezers to line up the tiny wires, then dab again. Just make sure the window is open, or the screen might stick to the windowpane.” -- T.T. in Indiana

HOMETOWN LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY High-quality food: Many local establishments have complete control over their suppliers and menus. As a result, they can be picky with regard to the vendors they use and the produce, meats, dairy, and other ingredients that they select. Many small, independently owned restaurants team up with local organic farmers and distributors to supply a farm-to-table experience that many diners now enjoy. Around and around the house the leaves fall thick—but never fast, for they come circling down with a dead lightness that is sombre and slow. Let the gardener sweep and sweep the turf as he will, and press the leaves into full barrows, and wheel them off, still they lie ankle-deep. ~Charles Dickens, Bleak House

Pick your destination Anywhere with deciduous trees provides the opportunity to witness blazing autumn color. During leaf-peeping season, travelers can go coast to coast and see awesome vistas. Some regions are particularly known for their leaf displays. New York’s Catskill and Adirondack regions are prime spots for visitors in the autumn. Those who live further north will find that leaves in Vermont are such an attraction that routes are published indicating where to enjoy the best views. Further south, Central and Eastern Virginia peak in late October. And don’t forget the shores of the Great Lakes, which are awash in reds, oranges and yellows by mid-September. The travel resource Frommer’s offers more leaf-peeping locales to visit. Page 6

T
wenty-five years is quite the accomplishment for an event, especially considering some of the conflicts that arose due to the pandemic these last two years. We are excited to share that the 25th annual Cupboard Craft Sale will be a two-day event, taking place on Saturday, October 9th from 9am to 5pm, as well as on Sunday, October 10th from 9am to 3pm. Thanks to the Henrietta Recreation Center, located at 605 Calkins Road in Henrietta, this event has a secure location in which to continue their many years of community service. The Cupboard Craft Sale is important because it supports the RHAFT (Rush-Henrietta Area Food Terminal). The RHAFT has been the community’s emergency food cupboard since 1979. RHAFT receives calls from people facing an emergency, who need help providing food for their families. Donations to RHAFT stay local, helping residents living within the Rush-Henrietta Central School District. After an interview, RHAFT volunteers package and deliver emergency food for a specific number of days to those who qualify for assistance. It is more important now than ever to pay attention to those in need, especially with the crisis our world has endured over the last couple of years. Even the area’s younger neighbors are taking part. The Youth Asset Team, under the Henrietta Recreation Department, is a group of young Rush-Henrietta area volunteers who participate in this yearly event, along with middle and high school students from the area. “This gives area youth a true sense of community service by helping the vendors load and unload their equipment and merchandise for the sale,” said Donna McGovern, one of the event organizers. This year, McGovern expects that about 20 youth will be there to help with the event. Over the years, more than $110,000 and almost 3,000 boxes of nonperishable groceries have gone to RHAFT from the Cupboard Craft Sale. All application fees from the more than 50 vendors go directly to RHAFT as a donation, along with any cash donations given by the members of the community. For admission, attendees are kindly asked to bring any nonperishable groceries, which will be collected at the door for RHAFT. Anyone who forgets groceries can make a cash donation which also goes to RHAFT, so that perishable groceries‚ such as bread, milk, and eggs‚ can be purchased when needed. This year’s Cupboard Craft Sale is possible thanks to the hard work of co-organizers, Donna McGovern and Sandy Junge, and the donation of the venue by the Henrietta Recreation Department. Expected finds include crafts from local vendors ranging from jewelry and metal work to bird houses and baby blankets. All are invited to stop by and check out the many wonderful, handmade items for sale on October 9th and 10th! - Donna McGovern

Rocks, really? To the person ranting about the painted rocks: There is so much bashing and hate in this world, and you pick this to rant about? If you don’t like them, pass by and let someone else find them. I love them!
S E V RA Not so finicky A recent rave thanked the Penny Saver carriers for avoiding the delivery tube where a wren was building a nest. The writer was a kind birdwatcher but is misinformed about wrens. Male wrens identify several possible nesting locations and start building a nest in each. Then, when they meet a mate, they bring the female to each nest. She selects the one she likes the best. The nest in the tube wasn’t a sad tale of a female abandoning her work. It was a suitor trying to impress, and she liked one of his other homes better. Watching grass grow Watching grass grow is much more exciting than it sounds when it is your lawn! Thank you so much to the generous volunteers at Habitat for Humanity of Livingston County and to the young SUNY Geneseo college student who came out to prepare, seed, and straw my yard a few weeks ago. The new green grass is looking good! - Grateful Habitat Homeowner Thanks for the stories! I’d like to thank Amanda Dudek for all of her great articles she writes in the Penny Saver. Keep up the great work, Amanda! Patriot Day Thanks Thank you to those responsible for the beautiful 9/11 Ceremony at the Circle in Avon. It was wonderful to see our Veterans, EMTs, Firemen & LEOs, the Patriot Guard, St. Agnes School students and community members all pause and remember. Beautiful rendition of our national anthem too. Thank you. Honesty wins! Last Saturday, we went to the Land of the Legends Raceway in Canandaigua. When we were about to leave, we realized my boyfriend’s driver’s license was missing, so we started looking for it. He went to the booth to see if someone had turned in a driver’s license, and it was there! What a relief! We would like to say thank you so much to the stranger who found the driver’s license and returned it to the booth. We appreciate your honesty!
Going to the dogs I am afraid that my apartment complex is going to the dogs. Maybe they should just turn the place into a daycare center since there are always kids around. Whatever happened to the different activities that used to go on? If the office doesn’t want to be bothered doing anything, then maybe let someone else handle activities. Thank God we have a great maintenance crew! They are always on top of everything when they know about it.
How low can you get? During the last few weeks, our gas has been stolen out of our cars and trucks. You are going around our town and doing this. We aren’t the first. A local roadside stand has fruits and veggies that are being taken, too. Your pictures is being taken, so make sure you smile when you do these things. You need to get a job and a life. Stop doing these bad things. In case you don’t know, the people you are stealing from are retired and handicapped. You may think this is a joke, but it’s not. You will pay the consequences. My advice to you is to get a job and be a human, not a thief. May God have pity on you if you get caught. - Resident of this Little Town

DEAR DR. ROACH: What is the difference between
NATURAL WAYS TO FIGHT FALL ALLERGIES
eccentric LVH and concentric LVH? Which one is more dangerous and needs more attention? My mother was diagnosed with severe eccentric LVH for body surface area with adequate systolic and diastolic functions. What does that mean? -- C.F. ANSWER: The left ventricle is the chamber of the heart that pumps blood to the entire body, except for through the lungs; that is the job of the right ventricle. When the job is too hard, usually because of high blood pressure, the left ventricle hypertrophies, meaning its walls get thicker as a response to the increased workload. That hypertrophy can be symmetrical (concentric) or asymmetrical (eccentric). Early on, the left ventricle can still do its two jobs despite the hypertrophy: It can push out all the blood the body needs (that’s the systolic function), and relax under low pressure (that’s the diastolic function). Your mother has adequate systolic and diastolic function, so she is not in heart failure at this time. If LVH is not treated, it tends to get worse. Usually the diastolic function fails first, and the left ventricle, being thick and stiff, requires higher pressure to relax properly and allow the blood to flow in from the left atrium. The major symptom of diastolic heart failure (now called “heart failure with preserved ejection fraction,” or HF-pEF) is shortness of breath, especially with exertion. Some people may progress to having both systolic and diastolic failure (“heart failure with reduced ejection fraction,” HF-rEF), where fatigue becomes a major symptom. Swelling of the legs and increasing nighttime urination are additional symptoms. It’s not good to have either eccentric or concentric LVH, but cardiac physiologists note that concentric LVH gives the heart less ability to adapt to increased stress and has a worse prognosis. Both situations need to be treated as rapidly as possible to allow the heart to return to a more normal state. Blood pressure reduction -- whether through diet, weight loss, salt restriction, stress management, pharmacologic therapy or a combination -- is the primary treatment. Some blood pressure medications are more effective than others in helping the heart return to a more normal state, and high blood pressure experts often choose agents that are more effective in those people with LVH, especially concentric LCH, on echocardiogram. ACE inhibitors and beta blockers are typically a part of first-line treatment.
Take natural supplements. A study published in the journal Clinical and Experimental Allergy found participants who used tablets of the herb butterbar showed significant allergy relief after only one week. Select herbs from reputable manufacturers who certify them.

Let your youngsters pick their ow n pumpkins and then spend the rest of the day carving them at home. And don’t forget to save those seeds, w hich can be roasted over an open flame to make a delicious snack.

I step outside and the chilly air tightens the skin on my bare arms. Summer has ended all too quickly, and some of the leaves on the trees have already started to burn with the colors of fall. Fall colors.... so bright and intense and beautiful. It’s like nature is trying to fill you up with color, to saturate you so you can stockpile it before winter turns everything muted and dreary. ~Siobhan Vivian, Same Difference GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

CHOOSING AND APPLYING MULCH Homeowners may associate mulch with springtime lawn and garden care, but mulching in fall can benefit a lawn as well. According to the Morton Arboretum in Illinois, mulch protects roots against extreme temperatures, and not just those associated with summer heat waves.
Providing premium service for over 25 years
Mulch is often connected with its ability to help soil retain moisture during especially warm times of the year, when mulch promotes strong roots that can help lawns and plants survive periods of extreme heat. But when applied in the fall, mulch also inhibits freezing and thawing in winter, reducing the likelihood that plants will be injured.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Budget to Stay Busy, Not Bored This Winter This winter is not going to be a repeat of last year, at least not at my house. COVID will no doubt keep raging around the world, limiting our options for activities, canceling plans that were made with fingers crossed. But here at home I’m going to be busy, not bored. I’ve decided to spend a little mental health money that in a normal world I would have used for meals out, a few new outfits and maybe a couple of weekends away at a very nice hotel in the next state. To make up for the disappointments, I’ve renewed my Amazon Prime, not only for the free shipping but for the movies and videos I can watch for free. There are hundreds of documentaries, including ones on travel, giving me great views of places I can’t currently go. There are thousands of movies and television series I can watch with my Roku device. And then there are the books, sent instantly to my Kindle, with font sizes I can change in a moment. If I’m in the mood for British television and movies, Adobe.tv has a big selection (even Australian!), only costing a few dollars per month. BritBox is nearly as good as Adobe, at almost the same price. I’m looking at an inexpensive exercise bike, possibly a recumbent one. These allow all the movements of riding a bicycle, but there is a seat back to lean against and two handles to hold. (If there is no space for a bike, there are pedal machines that can be used while seated in a chair.) And then there are the arts and crafts to fill the long days. I searched online for crafts for adults and found thousands of kits, including several types I’d never tried before. Some of them, if they turn out well, might end up being holiday gifts I won’t have to shop for! (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

STATISTICS SHOW JUST HOW BIG SMALL BUSINESS IS The U.S. Small Business Administration notes that small businesses make up 99.7 percent of all employers in the United States. Percentages are similar in Canada, where BDC, a bank devoted exclusively to entrepreneurs, notes that 99.8 percent of businesses employ fewer than 499 workers.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Sept. 27, 1854, two ships collide off the coast of Newfoundland, killing 322 people. The wooden-hull Arctic slammed into the iron-hull steamer Vesta and was severely damaged. In trying to beach the ship, the Artic’s captain ran over several lifeboats, causing more people to drown. * On Sept. 28, 1928, a lab accident led Sir Alexander Fleming, a young bacteriologist, to one of the great discoveries of modern medicine. Having left a plate of staphylococcus bacteria uncovered, Fleming noticed that a mold that had fallen on the culture had killed many of the bacteria. He identified the mold as penicillium notatum, similar to the kind found on bread. * On Sept. 29, 1969, the U.S. Army drops murder charges against eight Green Berets accused of killing a Vietnamese national, citing reasons of national security after the CIA refused to release highly classified information.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Why Risk Buying a Pet Overseas? --DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m writing in response to your recent article about pet imports from overseas being banned. Potential pet owners may be frustrated by this rule, but what is their reason for going outside the country? Most likely, they want to purchase a purebred dog at a lower price. Buying a dog overseas is very risky. The countries mentioned in the temporary ban are listed for a reason. Often the breeding is poor, and standards are low. A country’s culture can play a role. They learn what is wanted, they produce, and you buy. The old saying, “You get what you pay for,” applies here. Many owners end up spending more in vet bills than they saved on an overseas dog. The risk is yours. There are many good breeders in the U.S., but they’re not always easy to find. The U.S. is not perfect and has poor breeders too. But certain standards must be met, and it will show in a so-so breeder. Three things to look for are: 1. Sanitary conditions. If the place you visit smells at all, go no further. 2. Do puppies live in the house and not in a kennel? The best of breeders will not replace human contact from birth. 3. Selling too soon. Baby animals need their mothers. A good pup has stayed with its mother ideally for 11 or 12 weeks. Anyone willing to sell under 8 weeks should raise your eyebrow. The American Kennel Club has good representatives taking calls. They are often breeders themselves and can guide you to your choice of breed. Why not get the best and safest dog? It’s important to trust your breeder. Be safe -- buy American! -- Colleen R., via email DEAR COLLEEN: You told them, and I thank you. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

LEAVING A JOB GRACEFULLY Watch out for social media. It’s best to keep resignation plans to yourself and off of social media. You never know who is reading your posts, and bad-mouthing a soon-to-be-former employer can lead to hurt feelings and poor references. Resist the urge to rant about what’s making you unhappy at work or brag about a new position to your social network.

RECOVERING FROM STROKE (NAPSI)—Stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability—in fact, it’s even more disabling than it is fatal. The period following a stroke can be difficult for patients and their loved ones, as they grapple with the uncertainties of recovery. For example, Sabrina Warren-White was a busy professional when a stroke in left her unable to speak or use her right side. She quickly began a rigorous rehabilitation program and can now speak, walk and use her right arm. Doctor’s Advice Once acute medical issues are resolved, focusing on rehabilitation is paramount to helping people build their strength, capabilities and confidence, said Dr. Larry B. Goldstein, the Ruth L. Works Professor and Chairman for the Department of Neurology and Co-director for the Kentucky Neuroscience Institute and KY Clinic at the University of Kentucky. “Most patients will recover to some degree, but a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach to rehabilitation is crucial because it has been shown to result in better outcomes for patients,” Dr. Goldstein added. Access to coordinated and intense therapies after a stroke is important because the greatest amount of recovery tends to occur in the first 30 days, Dr. Goldstein said. “Intensity of rehabilitation therapy matters,” he pointed out. “Patients need access to good rehabilitation services and should continue to work at it, even after that initial recovery period.”
Apple Butter Bacon-Wrapped Shrimp Servings: 10 3/4 cup Apple Butter 1/2 cup maple syrup 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika 10 pieces bacon 10 extra-large shrimp, cleaned and deveined chopped cilantro, for garnish (optional) Heat oven to 400 F. Line rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. In medium-sized skillet over medium heat, add apple butter, maple syrup, red pepper flakes, salt and paprika. Whisk until mixture is thick and cooked down by half, about 10 minutes. Set aside. In large skillet over medium heat, add bacon slices and cook until browned but still flexible. Remove from pan and drain on paper towel-lined plate. Wrap one bacon slice around each shrimp, secure with toothpick and place onto prepared baking sheet. Once all shrimp have been wrapped, baste tops with apple butter mixture. Bake 5 minutes then flip and baste other side of shrimp. Bake another 5 minutes. Continue to flip and baste shrimp (2 minutes each time) until shrimp is fully cooked. Do not overcook as glaze can burn. Sprinkle with cilantro, if desired. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER
