I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green. ~Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mosses from and Old Manse

Plants depend on insects to transfer pollen as they forage, and many insects are quite beneficial to have around. While some pollinate, others are predators of other pests. • Antlion: A foe of ants, they’ll help eat and control ant populations and pollinate flowers. They pose no threat to humans, either. • Big dipper firefly: These colorful insects feast on earthworms, slugs and snails during the larval stage. Fireflies add drama to evening gardens with their twinkling lights. • Garden spiders: Although some spiders can be venomous, many are quite handy to have around the garden. They’ll help control pest populations that can damage plants and crops. • Dragonflies: These arial artists that zip around the yard are consuming smaller insects that would otherwise pester plants and humans. • Blue-winged wasp: This wasp attacks the larvae of Japanese beetles, helping to control beetle populations. • Bees and butterflies: Butterflies and bees are some of the best pollinators out there, and each can add whimsy to gardens. Autumn is the season of change. ~Taoist proverb

Storms may have damaged branches, necessitating a pruning. In other instances, trees may have outgrown their yards, overpowering the landscape. Autumn and winter, when trees largely go dormant and fallen leaves make it easier to see the branches beneath, may be prime times to prune. Pruning during the dormant period also minimizes sap loss and stress to the tree, and can help cut down on the growth of fungi. In addition, insects are less likely to be problematic during the colder months of the year.

It was one of those perfect English autumnal days which occur more frequently in memory than in life. The rich colours of grass and earth were intensified by the mellow light of a sun almost warm enough for spring... ~P.D. James, A Taste for Death

Q &A with the

Autumn! sad, sighing, yet most lovely Autumn, again art thou here; and again with feelings “pleasant but mournful to my soul,” do I greet thy return. And the strangest feelings of mingled pleasure and pain are awakened at thy approach, though thou excitest emotions less rapturous and fancies less playful, yet hath thy presence for me a solace and a spell unfelt amid the greener verdure, brighter sunbeams and more fragrant flowers of Summer. Dearer to me than the clustering roses of June, are they withered stalk and falling leaf.... And for the heart, the busy, changeful human heart, thou hast a thousand stirring chords, whose vibrations awaken with an electric influence its slumbering sensibilities, and whose sympathetic music responds with all the truth of an echo. ~Elizabeth J. Eames, “An Autumn Reverie,” October 1840

Master

Gardeners My sweet corn, when a couple feet tall, produces 1-3 suckers off the base of the main stalk; why? Dave P. So-called “suckers” in this case are tillers. Corn tiller development is a normal part of corn physiology with variation by variety. Tillers generally indicate favorable

from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County growing conditions which may mean plants are spaced too far apart with abundant moisture and excess fertility. Recommended spacing is with rows 30 to 36 inches apart with a spacing of 8 to 12 inches between plants within a row. Adverse weather

conditions such as hail and frost that damage the growing point in the stalk in early development can also cause tiller development. There is little effect from

tillers on the corn crop, and their presence is considered neutral, although there are some reports of positive and negative results.

And of course, they love to climb up on you to get your attention. * “While my family is still participating in virtual learning, it’s important that we recognize some structure. This means preparing -- or at least planning -- lunch meals ahead of time. Our house is small, and one of us is near the kitchen. This saves us two to three periods of someone banging around in the kitchen being disruptive.” -- E. in Florida * “Want to be more organized in your home cleaning? It seems many people want to have a cleaner, more organized home but get overwhelmed when putting it into practice. Start by creating a cleaning schedule that breaks down jobs into a list incorporating tasks to be done daily, weekly and even monthly or quarterly. It takes the ‘if I can’t do everything I’ll just do nothing’ factor out of play.” -- J.M. in Pennsylvania * A bathroom squeegee can help eliminate water spots before they form on your shower doors. Hang one in your shower. * If you haven’t worn an item in six months (of its seasonality), it’s time to let it go. That’s been the Golden Rule for as long as I can remember. I was asked recently, Does it apply this year? I think now, like always, is a good time to look critically at your overall summer wardrobe, but I would add “opportunity” to the caveats. Meaning, if you haven’t worn it because you have not had an opportunity you otherwise would have had, save it. Those work clothes will be important again! -- JoAnn

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Badly Behaved Dogs Need Basic Commands DEAR PAW’S CORNER:

Every time I read an article about a badly behaved dog, the trainer says that the dog needs to relearn basic commands like sit, stay and lie down. Why would unrelated commands solve a behavior problem? -- Edward in Albany, New York DEAR EDWARD: Every dog should be trained to respond to five basic commands: come, heel, sit, stay and lie down. Dogs need to obey their owner the first time and every time a command is issued. That may sound a little harsh, but a dog that can’t be controlled is a dog in danger. Owners need to be able to recall a dog that has slipped its leash before it runs into traffic. They need to make sure their dog will walk beside them and will sit calmly on command, especially when another dog approaches. Their dog needs to stay in position when told to do so -- whether sitting or lying down. Dogs aren’t robots, though. Like us, their discipline and training will slip if not regularly reinforced. Think about how often you and I give in to temptation and take that second cookie (or third or fourth or fifth). Just as we humans sometimes need reinforcement of good habits, our dogs need regular reinforcement of basic commands. When owners spend more time working one-on-one with their dogs, they frequently report that undesirable behaviors happen less often. The time and attention that owners give can quickly blunt attention-seeking behaviors. The AKC has a good breakdown of the basic dog commands here: www.akc. org/ expert-advice/training/ and search for “5 basic commands.” Energetic young dogs can be a handful sometimes. If you are having trouble getting your dog to respond to basic commands, enlist the help of a professional trainer.

Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

Help Reduce Animal Overpopulation One of the easiest ways to prevent pet overpopulation is to spay and neuter animals. Cats can reproduce at very fast rates. According to the Cat Rescue, Adoption & Foster Team of Central Oregon, two uncontrolled breeding cats can create the following situation if they have two litters a year at a survival rate of 2.8 kittens per litter: 12 cats in the first year, 66 cats in the second year, and 2,201 cats in the third year. Cats reach puberty between 4 and 12 months of age. Female cats reproduce between January and September, and might come back into “heat” every 14 to 21 days until they have bred or daylight decreases considerably. Cats can give birth 60 days after they have bred.

Does My Cat Need Himalayan Salt? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m thoroughly confused by all the “health advice” for pets that I read online. One site tells me my cats should eat only organic meats and chicken (and nothing else!), while a Facebook page tells me that my pets will do fine on a vegan diet. My granddaughter’s Instagram feed says that cats need a slew of supplements to be healthy, including pink Himalayan salt, which is all the rage. How can I figure out what’s really best for my cats? — Jim H., Manchester, New Hampshire DEAR JIM: I feel your pain. The internet has given us access to all the information we’re looking for — and all the information we weren’t. Companies have sprung up left and right, peddling the latest supplement or dietary recommendation to keep our pets totally healthy, guaranteed. Fad diets can sometimes do harm to pets because key nutrients may be left out. Feeding dogs and cats only meat, and nothing else, can be as bad as feeding them no meat. And while most supplements are safe, you have to read up on what they actually do and know what a safe dose is. Your first and best resource is your pet’s veterinarian, who has years of advanced education in animal care and stays abreast of the latest developments in pet health and wellness. He or she can tell you the best diet or supplements to give your cats, and which info on the internet to pay attention to and which to disregard. Talk to the vet at your cats’ next checkup, and you’ll get a much clearer picture of the best way to keep them healthy and well fed. No trendy salts needed. Send your questions or pet care tips to ask@pawscorner.com. © 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

Cologuard Test Worth Risk of False Positive ---

3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2 Henrietta 20 Finn Road, Suite C

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 77-year-old man in good health. At my recent annual physical exam, my physician ordered a Cologuard kit to be sent to me to screen for colorectal disease. I have never had symptoms of disease or problems with any part of my gastrointestinal tract. I had two colonoscopies at different times several years ago, the results of which were negative. When I got the kit, I read the patient guidelines and learned that the Cologuard test could result in false positives and that there is an unspecified increase in the risk of false positives for persons over the age of 75. A positive result from the test requires a follow-up colonoscopy, which is also riskier for elderly patients. Since I am in good health with no symptoms of any disease, I decided I did not want to risk a false positive result from the test, which would require a follow-up colonoscopy. Did I make the right decision? -- E.G. ANSWER: Cologuard is a brand of test that looks at DNA in stool for evidence of cancer. Certain DNA mutations are highly suggestive of cancer. In addition, Cologuard does an immunochemical test looking for blood. Because it combines these two techniques, Cologuard is more sensitive than only a test looking for blood. Compared with colonoscopy, Cologuard is about 92% sensitive in finding cancers, meaning it will miss about 8%. With improved sensitivity comes a lack of specificity, which means you could have a false positive result. The Cologuard can say that you have an abnormality when a colonoscopy would indicate normal. For 45% of people with a positive Cologuard test, no abnormalities will be found upon colonoscopy. You are right that false positives are more prevalent in older individuals. There are two reasons that I think the Cologuard is still a reasonable choice, despite the fact that it isn’t as good as colonoscopy. The first is that I continue to recommend a screening test for healthy 77-year-old men, and although colonoscopy is my first choice, a normal Cologuard test prevents a need for colonoscopy, and a false positive would lead to the same colonoscopy you would have gotten anyway (although there probably is more anxiety after a false positive test). The second is that a person with an abnormal Cologuard and a normal colonoscopy may be at risk for an abnormality that wasn’t found on colonoscopy. A study looking at people in this category found a 25% risk of abnormality on follow-up colonoscopy, if the Cologuard was abnormal again one to two years later. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I had lung surgery in 2014. The scar is still red and sore. I got no instructions on how to deal with it. Do you have any suggestions? -- J.S.B. ANSWER: That’s a very long time for the scar to still be red and sore, and I would encourage you to have the surgeon or your regular doctor take a look. For people with redness and soreness in a scar shortly after surgery, I recommend silicone gel (there are many available), as it has been shown to be effective. Many people recommend vitamin E oil, but well-done studies have shown this does not help and may harm the cosmetic appearance. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. HOW TO ENCOURAGE KIDS TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR TEETH Parents of young children know that getting kids to brush their teeth can sometimes feel like pulling teeth. Kids have a long history of disliking dental care, which can frustrate parents who know the importance and long-lasting benefits of proper dental hygiene. While many youngsters may never excitedly run to the bathroom to brush their teeth, parents can try various approaches to get kids to embrace proper dental care. Start early. Parents should not hesitate to begin cleaning kids’ teeth once the first tooth appears. The earlier dental care is part of a child’s routine, the more likely he or she is to accept it as part of everyday life. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends using a softbristled brush with a small head. Ideally, use a toothbrush designed for infants, brushing teeth once per day at bedtime. The AAPD advises taking kids to visit a pediatric dentist when the first tooth appears, or no later than the child’s first birthday. Make it a group effort. Young children love to imitate their parents’ actions and behaviors, and moms and dads can use that adoration to their advantage when trying to get kids to brush their teeth. Brush teeth together as a family, making it seem like an enjoyable twice-daily activity. Get down on kids’ level and show them how to brush. If kids are resistant, engage them in conversation while brushing so they don’t even realize they’re cleaning away. Involve kids in choosing their dental care products. While parents should be mindful of the type of toothbrush their children use, always sticking with products recommended by their child’s pediatric dentist, let youngsters choose their toothbrush and toothpaste. Kids might prefer a particular flavor of toothpaste, and a colorful toothbrush with a favorite film or television character might make kids more enthusiastic and less fussy about brushing. Compliment kids after positive dental appointments. When pediatric dentist appointments go well, compliment children and express your pride in them for taking dental hygiene as seriously as they do.

When the Year from fruitful labor turns to rest... Founts of warmth and comfort in my being flow... ~C.B. Galbreath, “Autumn Afternoon,” This Crimson Flower, In Flanders Field—An Answer, and Other Verse, 1919

DID YOU KNOW? Come autumn, many foods seem to take on a unique flavor exclusive to the season. That’s thanks to the ubiquitous “pumpkin spice,” which each fall is a specially featured ingredient in everything from cream cheese to marshmallows. Naturally, pumpkin spice is also a key ingredient when preparing pumpkin pie. But just what does pumpkin spice contain? Pumpkin spice is a combination of several different ground spices. It typically includes cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and nutmeg. It also may include allspice. Pumpkin spice is the name given to the blend in the United States. In the United Kingdom, pumpkin spice is known as “mixed spice,” which is a similar but not exact blend as that used to create pumpkin spice. Both feature cinnamon as the dominant flavor.

HOW TO SUPPORT BUSINESSES DURING MANDATORY RESTRICTIONS Recognize that more than food is available for takeout. In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York announced relaxations on laws governing what can and cannot be obtained via takeout, allowing takeout on goods that were previously restricted in regard to takeout. For example, Cuomo announced that the New York State Liquor Authority intended to temporarily relax regulations regarding the takeout and delivery of alcohol. Utilizing such services can be a great way to support local businesses while still adhering to recommendations designed to slow the spread of COVID-19.

But most of all, thanks for the care and attention given to me. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart! CAR ACCIDENT ANGEL I was in a bad car accident on Route 247 in Canandaigua on Friday, August 28th, and right after my car was hit I was

so scared and upset, but a very kind woman came to me and held me as I cried. She stayed right by side until the ambulance came. She was my angel, and I am forever grateful and blessed for her act of kindness. I did not get her name, but God bless you, and thank you so very much for being by my side. There are still kind people in this world, and she is definitely one of them! ABOVE AND BEYOND I want to recognize Alden Smith who owns Smith Solutions, our garbage service in Dansville. He is hands down the hardest working, most honest and respectful young man I know. He

goes above and beyond to serve his customers. Thank you for being outstanding in what I can imagine is a thankless job. A LOCAL TREASURE We arranged for a private tour of historic Valentown in Victor with a group of friends and wish to thank our tour guide, Kathryn White, and the other volunteers who made it possible. Valentown has a fascinating history and is a living legacy of the late Sheldon Fischer. It relies upon donations and volunteers to keep it operating. If you have not visited, I encourage you to check it out! THANK YOU!

BARE FEET After I left the store, you asked the cashier why I was allowed to be barefoot. (My son was behind you in line.) Had you asked, I would have been happy to explain US Department of Justice 28 CFR Part 36 (.201 and .302) protects a person’s right to go barefoot due to health, medical or disability reasons. It is a violation to ask why the person is barefoot, just as it would be to ask why a person is in a wheelchair. To educate: I have neuropathy, deadening the feeling in my feet. The greater my points of contact with the ground, the less likely I am to fall. If you pay attention, you will notice there is no longer a sign on any public entity stating no shirt, no shoes, no service due to this law. So, if you see me barefoot, please do not run to get the manager. I am a person with disabilities.

OUT OF SEASON My brother has 30 acres of land and has been watching a large turkey family in the fields eating grasshoppers. Something spooked them and they all flew across the road onto a certain property. This guy grabs his gun and starts shooting! My brother flipped out as he watched this. This person said he wanted a turkey for dinner after he lied about it saying the turkeys scared his horses, claiming he shot over the horses at the turkeys. My brother does not know for sure if he hit one, but if he got the hen, those babies surely won’t make it. I think these people are shooting deer, as well as rabbits and anything they can eat. What makes them special that they can shoot everything that is out of season? If I catch them doing this, I will turn them in.

OVERPOPULATION The only real way to solve the pollution and trashing of the earth’s environment is to have fewer people on the planet. Overpopulation is the source off the problems, and until people stop having more than two kids, the problems are only going to get worse. That is why there are over 8 billion people on earth. Magazines can publish good ideas and suggestions, which is fine, but in the end, it is too many people are the basic problem. RESPONSE TO “RABBLE ROUSERS” I am so sorry if you are having difficulty opening a small business in whatever township you live in. I know that where I live, we had a beautiful hardware store set up business. It was so wonderful to have a place so close to home. They once told us what a difficult

Just want to express my appreciation to the two Ontario County Sheriff’s Deputies who rescued me when I carelessly locked my keys and phone in my truck when I stopped at a veggie stand on 5 and 20 on Sept. 9th. Also, my gratitude to Laura Jo at the stand, who called for help. Thank you all! THANK YOU! I would like to thank the gentleman in the black truck who was in front of me at the McDonald’s drive-thru in Lakeville on Friday, Sept. 11th around 2:30pm for paying for my order. It brightened my day and was greatly appreciated!

time Town Hall gave them when they wanted to open. Yet, we can have a place that brings down the neighborhood. That is fine with Town Hall, which I find odd. The hardware store unfortunately had to close its doors. How sad! I wish you well with your endeavors, but it does seem to be an upward climb for some.

Mask Makers: COVID’s Everyday Heroes: Part II BY AMANDA DUDEK

T

o wear masks or not to wear masks has become the question lately. No matter where you stand, there is no denying the care and selflessness shown by those at home who gave, and continue to give, their time, resources and talents to make masks for those in need. Five of these unsung heroes in Livingston and Ontario Counties open up about their mask-making journeys. Rachel Halbert – Caledonia Caledonia’s Rachel Halbert, a homeschooling mom of four, was inspired to make her first masks for her sister, an essential worker at Strong Hospital. It wasn’t long, however, before people began asking for Rachel’s masks. “I started receiving more and more requests, and I realized, wow, more people need these than I thought,” she shared. “I couldn’t make masks fast enough!”

Showing off Rachel Halbert’s masks!

Rachel started filling a tote with masks of all sizes for men, women, and children, made from the material she had on hand. Some of her friends helped, as well. Rachel offered them at no charge to anyone in need. “The community response has been overwhelming,” she said. “I put a donation jar out front with tote of masks, and I received a huge outpouring of financial support. Material of all kinds was donated along with plants, gift cards, even pizza and food so I wouldn’t have to worry about dinner.” Recently, Rachel began using a new design and has been focusing on children’s masks for the 2020 school year, estimating she has made well over 500 Rachel Halbert’s masks are a great fit! masks total at this point. “It has been so rewarding to hear how my masks blessed others and to see people in my community wearing them,” Rachel confided. “I am thankful I was able to help keep them a little safer.” Elizabeth Hendy – Canandaigua Heading north of Naples, Elizabeth Hendy of Canandaigua also found a way for masks to serve a dual purpose. “I started making masks because we needed a way to start raising money for the Finger Lakes Thoroughbred Adoption Program,” Elizabeth explained. “This agency does a lot of good work

making sure horses find good homes at the end of their racing careers.” Elizabeth knew that those working at Finger Lakes Gaming & Racetrack, as well as others, would be in need of masks to comply with very strict regulations. So, she decided to make her masks with horse-themed patterns. “It makes it a little nicer to wear a Elizabeth Hendy displays her masks mask,” she said. “They are with the help of a five-month-old thoroughbred unofficially known as washable and very Captain, a future race horse! affordable. I provide masks for those who need them, and the money they bring in makes certain these horses are still being fed and taken care of.”

Elizabeth Hendy makes horse-themed masks to support the Finger Lakes Thoroughbred Adoption Program!

Although she has faced difficulties such as a lack of supplies and her sewing machine breaking down, Elizabeth continues to sew masks. “It doesn’t help to make masks which are pretty but not comfortable,” she said. She has made over 200 more comfortable masks so far. To order Elizabeth’s masks, visit the Finger Lakes Thoroughbred Adoption Program Facebook page.
