The m any benef it s of aut om ot ive roof rack s Today’s auto manufac turers understand that maximized cargo space is a feature many buyers w ant in their new vehicles. But even the most spacious car or SUV may not alw ays provide the right amount of space drivers need to haul large items. In such instanc es, roof rac ks are an asset, especially to avid travelers or outdoor enthusiasts. Roof racks benefit travelers and everyday motorists in numerous w ays. Racks make it easy to transport cargo that does not fit the shape or size of a car trunk or cargo area of an SUV. Also, roof racks enable drivers to free up interior space and keep sight lines open, contributing to driver safety. By boosting a vehicle’s storage space, roof racks essentially transform the top of a car or truck into a second trunk. M oving items up and outside of the car can free up additional legroom and give passengers greater comfort on longer trips. Plus, roof racks provide a sturdy surface on w hich to store kayaks, mountain bikes, furniture, surfboards, and more w ithout damaging the paint and finish of the vehicle. Roof racks are sold in a variety of styles and applications. Roof boxes and bags also c an be purchased, if you have items that need to be protected from the elements. M any auto manufacturers offer roof racks as an option on new vehicles, or they can be installed after-market by a qualified professional. W hen purchasing roof racks, drivers should consider their needs and the size of the items they’re most likely to store.

Don’t just replace but upgrade your headlight bulbs. Bulbs that have started to dim need to be repla ced, but auto enthusiasts or maintenance-savvy drivers know they can upgrade their bulbs w hen replacing them. Indu stry experts recommend replacing headlamp bulbs every tw o years, and replacing them in pairs to make sure the vehicle’s lighting is equally balanced. But rather than sticking w ith the bulbs provided by the car maker, look for a bulb that makes it easier to see at night and during hazardous conditions. These headlights put more light on the road, helping to make up for poor w eather, dimly lit roads, aging headlights, and even the loss of n ight vision many drivers experience as they age. Capable of providing up to 100 percent more light than the stan dard halogen bulbs found on the majority of vehicles today, special headlights create a better beam patte rn that is dramatically longer than the standard bulbs, vastly improving driver vision and safety.

HOST A SUCCESSFUL YARD SALE Price things reasonably It’s tempting to overprice items, but a good rule of thumb is to mark things for one-half to one-third of the original value. Be open to negotiation, but try to haggle with a “buy one get one” approach, rather than marking down the price considerably. After all, the goal is to get rid of as many items as possible, with financial gain a distant second.

I seem to have a knack for growing plants where they don’t belong. I am trying to grow date palms in containers and have three date palms ranging from 3” to 6” tall. With winter fast approaching, how should I keep them warm enough to survive and thrive? - Josiah C. Date Palms originate from North Africa and Asia and can tolerate some cooler temperatures. In our
climate in winter, however, they will need protection from a hard freeze which could kill them. Bring them in when temperatures fall into the 40’s at night, and find a bright, sunny window inside with room temperatures of 65-75 degrees. Water them sparingly in winter, letting the soil dry out between waterings. Make sure to provide good drainage. If they stand in water for long periods (a day or more), the roots can be damaged, and the tree could die.
While you should fertilize the trees about once per month in spring through fall, do not fertilize at all in winter. Avoid cold drafts near your young palm trees, and they should winter well and be ready to set out next spring and continue to grow and thrive.

Be mindful of permits. Some home improvement projects require permits, and these permits often have expiration dates. Homeowners must keep permits in mind when projects start to stall, recognizing that they may need to reapply for permits if projects go unfinished for especially long periods of time.

Help plants survive sizzling summer heat Move plants when possible. Plant location can affect their chances of surviving summer heat. Driveways lined with flowers or other plants may look nice, but driveways exposed to the sun can radiate heat at temperatures that exceed the temperatures noted on the thermometer. If possible, move plants to locations on your property that are less exposed to the heat and/or less likely to be affected by the heat. Move container plants beneath trees on hot days, and consider summer heat waves before planting new flower beds.

MAINTAIN SPARKLING CLEAR POOL WATER For cleanliness, water circulation and filtration is essential. This helps spread the chemicals to all areas of the pool and also helps to remove debris. Filters come in different types, including sand, diatomaceous earth, or DE, and cartridge. Each has its pros and cons. How long to run the filter depends on water temperature, gallons of water in the pool and the estimated water turnover rate of the filter. Pool owners can start with longer filter run times and gradually cut down until they find the right rate based on water appearance, according to popular pool forum Trouble Free Pools.

EXPLORING THE ORIGINS OF LABOR DAY Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summertime fun and a day when thousands of people gather across the country for their final big barbecue blowouts. Labor Day has evolved into a holiday about relaxing with friends and family, and that has led to its origins getting somewhat lost in the celebratory shuffle. Created by the labor movement in the late 19th century, Labor Day was established to highlight the achievements of American workers, both from a social and an economic perspective. Labor Day highlights one of the main benefits of being a citizen of the United States, the ability to have professional freedom and contribute to the prosperity and strength of the country through gainful employment. Labor Day became a federal holiday in 1894. Celebrated annually on the first Monday of September, it is believed that Labor Day was first promoted by the Central Labor Union and the Knights of Labor, which also organized the first labor-related parade in New York City. Although the true fathers of Labor Day remain a topic of debate, some historians maintain that Peter J. McGuire of the American Federation of Labor put forward the first Labor Day proposal in May 1882 after witnessing a labor festival in Toronto, Canada. Labor Day was largely celebrated in the past with parades, speeches and a day off of work for the country’s workers. Similar festivities occur to this day, with the gradual introduction of other events that mark the unofficial end of summer. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta Is a Cat Enclosure Inhumane? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My neighbor, when she’s doing yardwork, routinely puts her cat into something that looks like a chicken coop. It has a screen enclosure and a little wooden house. I’m very worried that the cat is too hot sitting in the enclosure and will get injured. Should I tell her to keep her cat inside? -- Worried Neighbor in Wichita DEAR WORRIED: Your neighbor is probably putting the cat inside a cat enclosure -- or maybe a repurposed chicken coop. Cat enclosures are getting very popular, especially in the cities and suburbs. These are a good way for an indoor cat to spend some time outdoors without the risk of running away, getting lost or being attacked by another animal. It can reduce exposure to fleas and ticks, too. If the cat has a shady place to hide from the sun while inside the shelter, and a bowl of fresh water, it is just fine to be in there for short periods (an hour or two). Since your neighbor is outside and within sight of the cat, it’s clear that she is keeping an eye on it. If you want to have a conversation about it, be polite. “That’s a neat enclosure; what a great way for your cat to get outside for a while!” is perhaps the best icebreaker in this case. Otherwise, if the cat does not appear distressed and is sitting or lying calm and alert, then there’s nothing to worry about, especially if your neighbor brings the cat inside after finishing the yardwork. If you have serious concerns (the cat is in the enclosure 24/7, looks very distressed or unhealthy), consider striking up a conversation or, if you’re uncomfortable doing that, contacting animal control. Send your tips, comments andquestions to ask@pawscorner. com.

THANK YOU, DOUG! While driving down Latta Road, in Greece, last Wednesday afternoon, I drove over a muffler in the roadway. It was wedged under my car. I immediately pulled over in the median. Very soon after, a loader type vehicle was coming along. I gestured to the driver, Doug, a Town of Greece employee. He stopped to help. After jacking the car up slightly, he was able to pull the muffler out. Thank you so much ONE LAST CHANCE The July 20/27th (double issue) of Time Magazine had numerous features on just how dire our planet’s environment is, at this point in its life. The writing was exceptional as many topics were covered. Certainly, the COVID 19 is at the top of our list in terms of catastrophes, but the heartbeat of our earth is racing toward life support and is a dangerously close second to the COVID. Do yourself a favor and find this important issue and take the time to come up to speed on what we need to do to save our planet! One redeeming aspect of this terrible pandemic is that it has made us stop (pause), access and alter our lifestyles for the greater good. We so desperately need to do the same for Mother Earth! SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles
Future Generations Are Counting on You The designation "senior" covers a long stretch of ages, some of us much older or younger than others. It's the older ones who perhaps have the biggest lesson to learn ... that time does not stretch forward indefinitely. I learned that lesson today when I received word that one of my oldest relatives had passed away. His name was Henry, and I never met him. I hooked up with him and his lovely wife many years ago when I started my genealogy hunt. We came together like family, which we were. Christmas cards, newsy letters, new genealogy tidbits, just as though we'd always known each other. I would visit someday, I always told myself, not only Henry and his wife, but all my other newly found relatives in their area. Time and physical distance can't change DNA, and I suspect that should I walk through their small town, I would be easily identified as one of them. All the questions I had, I told myself, could wait until I visited. I waited too long. We owe it to the family generations that come after us to leave them as much information as possible. But where do we start? We start with the family members that are ahead of us in age. We ask questions, we take notes, we write things down. Depending how "senior" we are, we might have parents still living, or if we're younger and have lucky DNA, we might even have a grandparent or two. Type up your information, save the file and print it out. Make copies and hand them out to as many of your relatives as you can. You might look at the generations after you and think they won't be interested in their ancestry. You'll probably be wrong. One of them, maybe years from now, will start to wonder ... and your information will be there. Don't wait. (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Do Homework First on Clinical Trials --DEAR DR. ROACH: My wife has had dementia for over two years. There is an ad in our local paper for an Alzheimer’s disease study. It says, “This study will assess how safe and effective an investigational drug is at slowing the progression of early (prodromal) or mild Alzheimer’s disease.” Is this protocol legit? I don’t trust this type of ad not coming from a hospital. I couldn’t find any information about the sponsors of the research. -- J.N. ANSWER: I was able to find the trial, called the Graduate II trial, which is sponsored by the manufacturer of the drug being tested, called gantenerumab. This drug is designed to reduce the size of the amyloid protein plaques in the brain, which are suspected of being the underlying cause of Alzheimer’s disease, and to prevent new ones from forming. It is indeed a legitimate trial. The best place to find out about these is on the clinicaltrials.gov website. The trial is in phase III. The drug has passed both phase I trials, which are designed to look at safety, and phase II, which look at both safety and effectiveness. Now the investigators are studying the effectiveness of the drug in a larger population, usually for a longer period of time. Drugs that do well in phase III clinical trials may be approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Alzheimer’s drug trials are difficult, because the disease often progresses slowly, and large, time-consuming trials are necessary. In general, I encourage people to consider participating in clinical trials, as they are essential for clinical advances. For gantenerumab in particular, phase I and II trials did show that the drug is effective at reducing the amount of amyloid plaque in the brain; however, clinical trials did not show improvement in memory and brain function. The new trial is using a higher dose and recruiting patients with earlier stage illness. I don’t have enough information to answer whether your wife, having had symptoms for two years, might be eligible for this trial, but I would certainly encourage you to find out more about it. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have recently started transitioning to a plant-based diet for preventative health reasons. While discussing the benefits of nuts and seeds with a dietitian, they had a disclaimer that flax seed can interfere with medications and to eat them two hours before or one hour after taking medications. I would not sit down and eat a handful of flax seeds, but now I am afraid to use them in the meals I prepare at all. Can you help me make a good decision? -- J.E. ANSWER: For people eating reasonable amounts (like a handful or two) of flax seeds as part of a meal, it is unlikely that they would interfere with medications enough to cause any significant problem, for most medications. There are two situations that might merit concern: In powerful anti-clotting agents, such as clopidogrel, flax seeds might prompt increased activity. Secondly, flax seeds may lower blood sugar a small amount. In combination with insulin or oral diabetes drugs, the blood sugar could possibly dip lower than expected. I doubt either of these interactions is likely to cause harm, but it is reasonable to discuss with your doctor if you are on one of the classes of medications mentioned. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Quality Sleep To help you feel your best and sleep more soundly, try the following tips: Take a shower – About 90 minutes before bedtime, take a hot bath or shower. This will help to reduce muscle tension & accelerate sleep onset. Create an electronics curfew – The blue light from your favorite electronic devices interrupts your ability to relax and fall asleep. Don’t use your smartphone, tablet and other digital devices for one hour before bed. Stretch to relax – Stretching for 10-15 minutes before bed will help reduce muscle tension. Turn down noises and do some gentle stretches to relax the muscles and mind. Set a wake-up schedule – Try to wake up at the same time each morning, even on the weekends. This will help keep your internal clock ticking correctly so you can fall asleep more quickly and sleep deeply. Embrace natural light – About 15 minutes of sunlight each morning will help reset your circadian rhythm so you can rise more naturally and then sleep better in the evenings.

Rochester Women’s Network:
Supporting Women Today
BY AMANDA DUDEK
W
hen the Rochester Women’s Network (RWN) was founded in 1978, classified ads still specified “hire male” or “hire female.” The fact that many now find this shocking is a testament to the efforts of several groups, including those like the RWN which support professional women. While some things have indeed changed for the better, the RWN continues its critical support of the professional and personal lives of women. As a member-driven, women’s networking organization, RWN’s leadership roles are mostly filled by women in business. “We have a board and committees which provide opportunities for individuals to come and sit in the positions of leadership in our nonprofit,” shared Jennifer Cave, VP of RWN Membership and owner and Chief Operating Officer at Rochester Research Associates. Some things, however, have remained quite the same. “One of the first workshops RWN taught work/life balance and how you find it,” recalled Cave. “Today, it is still one of our hottest issues, and we continue to bring the experts in to talk about it. The wage gap also remains a popular topic.” In fact, the RWN has addressed many topics since its inception at a conference for women and money. Over 300 women met to transform the “old boys” networking concept into a new woman’s specialty. It was the conference planners themselves who became RWN’s founding mothers, holding their first meeting in April 1978 and reaching 383 members by May of that year. Using strong, active words such as “support, empower, inspire, connect, grow, and succeed,” it is perhaps the RWN mantra that is its clearest indicator of what women were and are up against: “We’ll never ask you to sell chocolate bunnies or bake cookies.” The group has been more than true to its word. “We have grown to offer special interest groups with focus on personal, professional and social interests,” shared Cave. “Wine tasting, local restaurants, leadership, business referrals... RWN focuses on the overall picture, helping women personally and professionally, taking a holistic mind, body and soul. We also usually hold two major events: The W Awards at which we recognize women who are doing something outstanding in our community for other women – such as Kitty Van Bortel and Louise Slaughter – and a symposium on topics of professional development.”
RWN members support each other and work hard but never forget to have fun along the way! “We also typically hold a monthly networking event, free to our members. Members can sponsor our monthly networking event to promote their business,” Cave continued. “Finally, as a membership driven organization, we have several committees on which our members can serve, providing them with multiple learning and leadership opportunities in our nonprofit organization.” Naturally, like many other organizations and businesses, RWN has been unable to hold its major events. This has been quite impactful as RWN is funded by donations and membership. “We have been doing online programs and things like that, but our major events bring in thousands of dollars.” Cave explained. “We extended everyone’s membership for 60 days, just the same, and we are hopeful that we will increase our membership and people start jobs again.” Those who join will find a world of support waiting for them. “In RWN, we have many members who are introverts,” said Cave. “We help our members find their confidence. That is one of the best things we can provide: helping women find their voice and inner strength.” Diversity and inclusion have also long been an important piece of RWN. Leadership in RWN, spearheaded by their VP of Diversity and Inclusion address these important pieces at every board meeting. “We pride ourselves on being

Jennifer Cave (far right) with some of her fellow RWN members!
inclusive,” shared Cave. “Still, we constantly challenge our thoughts to see if we might possibly be excluding others in any way.” RWN is currently working to ensure that interpreters are available for any members who are deaf or hard of hearing. “We do not want to leave anyone behind,” Cave added. “We are very open to input.” The support and community at RWN have proven effective. “Two success stories leap immediately to mind,” she shared. “About ten years ago, one member, Lynn, wanted to start her own business. She joined RWN, and when she speaks about it, she is brought to tears when she shares how much growth this organization has brought to her. Another is KC Rossi who joined RWN and within her first year of putting in effort and taking advantage of our opportunities, she was able to add significant revenue to her business.” Personal experience confirms what Cave has witnessed. “I originally joined RWN because I was taking over a business and was looking for networking. I was searching for an insurance agent, an accountant, those things, which I was able to find. At the same time, I was surprised to find that the relationships I have made here have been so much more that I would ever have expected. The members are so caring and supportive, breaking any negative stereotypes.” Cave encourages women to join RWN and fully embrace the opportunities it brings. “If you are involved 100%, you will not regret it,” she said. “Whatever you are looking for at RWN, whether it’s personal growth, professional development, friendships, you will be able to achieve it if you put in your all and participate. If you need support, we are here.”
RWN focuses on the overall picture, helping women personally and professionally, taking a holistic mind, body and soul approach!

FINANCING FUNERALS Life insurance is a product few people want to think about. That’s perfectly understandable, as life insurance forces men and women to consider their own mortality. But life insurance is not something adults should avoid, especially if they have dependents. Many people should consider life insurance when estate planning so they can provide security for their loved ones.
MEMORIAL GIFTS HONOR LOVED ONES he loss of a friend or loved one is seldom easy, particularly if a person had been suffering from an illness. Close friends and family honor the memories of their deceased loved ones in different ways. Charitable giving can be a great way to honor a loved one’s memory while helping others. Survivors often find comfort in the knowledge that they can do good in the name of a loved one. Tributes or memorial gifts can be approached in different ways and serve as an ongoing reminder of a deceased loved one. Create a charitable foundation: Those who have the time and resources can establish their own charitable groups in the decedent’s name. This method of charity requires the most time and effort, but can prove to be quite an impactful memorial. Individuals who would like to go this route can consult with financial and tax professionals about the best way to establish a charitable group.
According to Lincoln Heritage Funeral Advantage, the average funeral costs between $7,000 and $10,000. It can be easy to overlook planning for such a large expense, and many people may think their funeral costs will be covered by their life insurance policies. However, that isn’t always the case and certain complications can arise. The funeral planning information guide Funeral Basics states that sometimes insurance policies become invalid if payments have not been made. Policies may have liens on them, or some named beneficiaries may no longer be alive. This can stall the process as issues are worked through. In addition, it can sometimes take between six and eight weeks for beneficiaries to receive life insurance policy payouts. Since many funerals take place within a week of a person’s death, it’s unlikely that surviving family members will be able to finance funerals with life insurance payouts. In addition, some policies may not be assignable, which means the benefits cannot be assigned to go to a third party who will file the claim for you (i.e., the funeral home or an assignment company with which the funeral home partners). It’s important to determine if an existing policy is assignable and to take appropriate measures if it is not. Individuals may want to consider burial insurance or preneed funeral insurance. Another option is to use preplanning services, which allow people to prepay for funeral expenses and make planning decisions regarding the services and burial so that family members will not be tasked with financing and/or planning a funeral during a difficult time in their lives.
Community foundation: Families can focus on something their loved one cared deeply about, such as animal rescue, children, the arts, or even particular places in a community - such as a local park. According to CarePages, a company that produces free patient websites and offers community support for those coping with illness, families can choose to have their donations funneled to specific charities or nonprofit groups. Otherwise, funds can be allocated to a third party community fund that will distribute money to various organizations no matter where they are located. Medical tribute: Memorial gifts that assist medical associations or groups working to find cures or offer treatments for diseases are quite popular. If a loved one passed away due to a specific illness, it is common to ask for donations to a specific organization that specializes in information and services pertaining to that illness. Many such groups have a “donate in memory” option on their websites. Oftentimes families are notified regarding who made memorial donations in their loved ones’ names, but the amount of the donation need not be revealed. Personal intentions: Those who would like to make a donation but cannot think of a charity to associate with their deceased loved one have a host of options at their disposal. Consider donating to a school or library, requesting materials be purchased in the decedent’s name. Otherwise, donate to a general scholarship fund, possibly at the decedent’s alma mater. Finish their work: If the decedent was engaged in a charitable project prior to their death, volunteer to help complete that project. Giving back after the death of a loved one is a great way to keep the memory of that person alive. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS Take more time off. According to the “State of American Vacation 2016” report from Project: Time Off, American workers failed to use 658 million vacation days in 2015. Vacation is not just a time to get away, but a valuable, effective way for workers to recharge. The APA notes that avoiding the negative effects of chronic stress and burnout requires workers to take time away to replenish and return to their pre-stress level of functioning. Taking time off to disconnect from work and avoid thinking about work can be just what workers need to overcome their work-related stress. And plenty of workers have the time to take off; they just need to take it.

GREAT PART-TIME JOBS FOR RETIREES Seasonal work: Seasonal work is another great way for retirees to fill their time and make a little extra money along the way. In warmer months, retirees may find seasonal employment at area beaches, golf courses or parks.
Change your workout schedule. Regular exercise improves shortand long-term health while also increasing daily energy levels. Professionals who include exercise in their daily routines yet still suffer from a lack of alertness in the afternoon may need to alter their workout schedules. A 2011 study published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine found that participants who were assigned afternoon exercise programs during work hours reported increased productivity versus those who were not assigned afternoon workouts. If working out in the afternoon is not feasible, avoid working out too late at night, as the National Institutes of Health note that exercising within two to three hours of bedtime can disrupt sleep, ultimately having a negative impact on energy levels the following day.
