Thank you to the person who picked up our afternoon tab at Longhorn Steakhouse on Tuesday, Feb. 4th in Victor. You left the restaurant before we had the chance to thank you. It may be possible that you heard me ask about them offering a military discount. We appreciate your generosity
Thank you to the clerks at Five Below, Brockport, NY. I was shopping before Christmas 2024 in a couple of places and on the way home discovered I had lost one of my rings. Not just any ring, one that my parents gave to my Aunt many years ago and I received after my Mother passed. Black Onyx with a small diamond in center. One of the clerks found it and kept it up front. On a whim a couple days later I asked the cashier if they had found a ring. YES! she pulled it out. I was so thankful. I wanted to reward them but they said they couldn’t accept anything. You really deserve to be held in high esteem. Thank you so much for being so good.
By Keith Roach, M.D.
Why do employers care so much more about profitability than taking care of their employees? I may sound like a senior, but I am far from it, old enough to know a time when my boss/es valued me, my time, my work, and young enough to not understand why current employers don’t care that inflation raises costs of absolutely everything in our lives, and yet they do not give raises. Put your money where your mouth is and help us care about the company we work for. To be told outright that they value our work, to see consistently increased prices charged to customers/clients, to see the bosses take extravagant vacations and/or drive new vehicles, buy or build new homes, but to be told “We don’t give raises”?! No wonder employees are becoming more and more disenfranchised and apathetic toward their companies/ employers/jobs in general. What is this world coming to if half of a company’s small employee base is forced to take on second jobs to make ends meet?! Do better.
Shopping centers, please stop kids from “joyriding” around your stores on the electric handicap carts. When it’s obvious they’re playing and don’t need it, security or management need to intervene. Then legitimate handicap people can use them.
Q.
DEAR DR. ROACH: Is 18 years a record for living without a stomach? A family member had stomach cancer when he was 70 and had his stomach removed. He consulted with a dietician and has been able to eat small but frequent meals. He can also take enzymes, vitamins and other things, but slowly he has lost weight.
Now at 88, he is down to 84 pounds, and his muscles are also affected. He used to play racquetball regularly, but this came to an end during COVID and wasn’t picked back up after the pandemic. He can no longer walk without assistance. They are putting a feeding tube into his small intestine to supplement what he usually eats. Are you familiar with this type of thing? What else can be done, or is this the end? Will he starve to death? -- Y.F.
ANSWER: I have seen many patients with stomach cancer and have never seen this degree of weight loss, but weight loss is very common after removing the stomach. This degree of weight loss is very disturbing and usually results in a worse outcome, so effective treatment is overdue. A feeding tube, which isn’t often the appropriate treatment for weight loss, seems to be an important short-term treatment. I assume that he has had extensive evaluations for the recurrence of diseases, including CT scans. You mention that he has been getting vitamins; B12 and vitamin D levels are often profoundly low after gastrectomy (removal of the stomach),so these should be checked, even if he has been on replacements. If no other cause is found, it might be worth a try to use an appetite stimulant. In addition,I would formally measure his total calorie input in a day to see whether the problem really is that he isn’t getting enough calories. I would be worried that he isn’t absorbing all of them.
There is no reason for him to starve to death. In the very worst case, nutrition can be given intravenously while they figure out why he is losing so much weight.
Q.
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an 84-year-old male in amazingly good health and have great physical abilities, but after running about 3 miles, I noticed some minor chest discomfort. After a calcium score test and stress test, my doctor wanted to place stents in my coronary arteries.
I read a National Institue of Health study from 2020 regarding stent outcomes versus medication and lifestyle changes, and it showed no difference in the outcomes. So, I decided not to do the stents.
I no longer do any distance running, but I do weight training and a stationary bike exercise for 10 minutes without any chest issues. I now take statin drugs, blood pressure medicines, and baby aspirin.
Areyoufamiliarwiththisstudy, andamIdoingareasonable thing by not having the stents inserted? -- T.E.
ANSWER: Whether stents are beneficial in people with stable coronary artery disease remains somewhat controversial. Although stents in combination with a healthy diet, exercise and medication may improve symptoms better than lifestyle changes and medication alone, there is no data to show an improvement in lifespan or in preventing heart attacks.
A.
Your cardiologist wanted to reduce your symptoms, but if you aren’t having any now, then stenting isn’t indicated. If you had to reduce your running because of chest discomfort, then stenting might possibly allow you to do more exercise without having these symptoms.

VERONICA M. (JOZEFICK)
BATH, NY: Veronica M. (Jozefick) Cummings, age 88, a member of St. John Vianney Parrish, passed away peacefully at Robert Packer Sayre Hospital on February 7, 2025 surrounded by family.
She was born on February 20, 1936 to the late John Jozefick and Mary (Swabick) Jozefick in Snow Shoe, PA.
As a young teenage girl she moved to Hammondsport, NY to help family with babysitting and there is where she met the love of her life Raymond E. Cummings marrying in 1958 and started her family.
Veronica worked for Westinghouse and then Philips Lighting in Bath, New York for over 36 years. Our dear mother was such a blessing to our family, her devotion to us was unending right up her passing into her Eternal Life in heaven. Family was priority to her and her belief in Christ her Savior kept her Catholic spirit alive. Veronica found peace each day by reading her bible and saying her rosary daily. She enjoyed her word search books and of course when baseball season begins you would find her watching her favorite NY Yankee team. Veronica loved to cook and bake for her family and friends and when canning season came around you would find her in the kitchen for hours. She always made enough to keep us all stocked up for winter. We will truly miss the jams and fresh vegetables.
Her belief in the Catholic Church kept her going, she never missed a Sunday mass or Catholic holiday service. She was a devout Catholic and lived her life as such. She raised her children in this same belief.
She was so proud that her youngest son Stephen returned to the Catholic Church and was raising her grandchildren as Catholics and that they all went to church with her. Her proudest moments were seeing her grandsons Julius and Jeremiah serve as Alter boys each Sunday and her youngest granddaughter Reece hand out bulletins to members of the parish as they entered for Sunday service.
In Veronica’s memory, she would be honored to have donations in her name sent to St. John Vianney Parrish in Bath, New York.
She is survived by her children, Owen Cummings, John (Michelle) Cummings, Theresa (Kevin) Smalt, and Stephen (Breona) Cummings; brothers, Frank (Marion) Jozefick, Andrew Jozefick; brother-in-law, Tom Allen; grandchildren, Kari (Josh) Tobias, Kevin (Kelsey) Calkins, Ray (Keri) Cummings, Owen (Brittany) Cummings, Kim (Andy) Cummings, Julius, Jeremiah and Reese Cummings; great grandchildren, Cameron and Tucker Tobias, Kinsey and Natalie Calkins, Mason and Kali Cummings, Jacob, Andrew and Lilliana Paige; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, Veronica was predeceased by sisters, Monica and Marion; brother, John; oldest son, Raymond; and grandchild, Korbie Higgins.
Life as we knew it will never be the same but knowing our mother is in heaven and free of pain we will continue on and honor this amazing woman we called Mom and Gram for the rest of our journey.
Calling hours were observed on Thursday, February 13, 2025 from 9:30AM to 11:30AM at St. Gabriel Church with her Funeral Mass at 11:30AM with Father James Jeager Officiating. Her burial will follow at Pleasant Valley Cemetery Hammondsport, NY.

WHY IT’S IMPORTANT TO FOLLOW AN IMMUNIZATION SCHEDULE
If a dose is missed or a child is behind schedule, that does not require starting all over. A doctor can be consulted and the next shot in a series can be scheduled as soon as possible.
Wouldn’t it be an exhilarating tonic for the soul to take a moment to appreciate the simple, good things in life whicharesobountiful...?

What to know about hospice at home e philosophy behind hospice is that people should be able to live as fully and as comfortably as possible through the last days of their lives, surrounded by loved ones and friends. Hospice treats the symptoms of illness rather than trying to be curative. Hospice also does not try to postpone nor accelerate death. e American Cancer Society says hospice care is offered by a team of professionals who work together to manage distress, symptoms and spiritual issues. Services also are offered to family members, including access to counselors and bereavement experts. Hospice workers help family members make decisions and plan care. Hospice is a form of care, rather than a place. Saying a person is going into hospice means he or she will begin to receive this type of palliative care. While hospice can take place in a center that only offers this type of service, a hospice team can work in a variety of settings, including one’s home.
Many people receive hospice care at home. VNS Health provides care in spaces patients call home and says that hospice care can include administration of medications, arrangement of equipment (like beds and oxygen) and visits from a hospice care team. A hospice team may include nurses, social workers, physicians, therapists, and even clergy who come to the home to offer support and care. Home hospice care begins with a team member visiting with a terminally ill person and his or her family. During a visit, needs will be addressed and the hospice team can arrange for desired services.
Members of the hospice staff will visit regularly to check up and make sure that any symptoms are under control. Families are urged to do their homework to find the best program for their needs.

RECOGNIZING
Physical symptoms: Sometimes vision problems may be apparent because you can see there is something amiss. Eyes that don’t line up, eyes that appear crossed, redness in the eyes or rims, or red, inflamed eyes can be symptomatic of a vision problem.
Tonometry measurement: Glaucoma occurs when intraocular pressure is high. Some eye doctors will conduct tests to determine the pressure. One way is with a non-contact tonometry test, which is a puff of air squirted at each eye. With applanation tonometry, the doctor first administers a mild numbing agent to the eye, and then uses a pressure-sensitive instrument to gently tap on the surface of the eye to get a pressure reading. A rebound tonometry test requires a handheld device that makes brief contact to the eye and doesn’t require local anesthesia.
Don’t forget the person who will read your resume. Though ATS software plays an integral role in modern hiring, eventually a human being will see the resume if it gets past the ATS portion of the vetting process. Before submitting a resume, read it several times to ensure it reflects your accomplishments, talents and aspirations and not just the keywords that will get the document seen by human eyeballs. Numerous resumes will get past the ATS software, so it’s imperative that the resume illustrates a candidate’s qualifications and talents.

Manufactured stone veneer: A manufactured stone veneer is a man-made product that appears as if it’s natural stone. Many homeowners prefer manufactured stone veneer to natural stone because of the price, as the former is less expensive and easier to install, which means lower labor costs as well. The comparatively low cost of manufactured stone veneer is perhaps one reason why it averages a roughly 153 percent ROI on an average cost of just more than $11,000.

Getting the entire family together can take a little effort. There is no shortage of activities that pull family members apart most days of the week, from work obligations to sports practices to school events. The United Kingdom-based media provider Independent reported in 2023 on a study of 2,000 parents with children at home. The study found families are only spending six hours a week together, which is less than an hour each day. Furthermore, they only eat meals as a household four days out of seven.
Eking out more time for family may be as easy as scheduling activities that everyone can rally behind. Family game nights give everyone an excuse to gather at least once a week. These tips can make family game night a can’t-miss activity.
· Start with simple games and branch out. The first step to a successful family game night is choosing the right game to engage all participants. This can be challenging when there are young children, teenagers, middle-aged adults, and even seniors participating. Visit an independently owned toy and games store and pick the brain of the proprietor. He or she will likely have some suggestions to get you started. As participants become more comfortable, you can branch out with games.
· Make it a recurring event.Set a firm day of the week for the game night. This way participants will block out that date andtime and make every attempt to attend. Treat game night like any other important appointment.
· Consider games with movement. Game night doesn’t have to mean sitting around a board game, which young children who have trouble sitting still may characterize as a “bored” game. Games that get people moving, whether it’s charades, drawing games or a game such as Twister® can be more engaging. Game night also can take activities to a golf driving range or an arcade.
· Gather for the right reasons. Game night should focus on having the entire family together laughing and competing in a good-natured way. It should not be a strict competition where winning is the only goal. Avoid the potential for sore losers who can sour game nights in a flash by letting everyone know that fun is the foremost priority of the night.
· Offer prizes. Encourage participation with the lure of prizes at the end. Prizes will not just go to the overall winner. There can be humorous awards, such as the player who messed up trivia questions the most, or the one who rolled matching pairs of the dice most frequently. You can customize the winning categories depending on the game played so everyone gets a fighting chance at a prize. Keep awards simple, like candy bars or other appealing treats.
· Identify a “game master.” Every game night should feature a game master who presides over the rules of the game. The rules can be the ones strictly off of the information sheet, or the ones you customize for your own fun. The game master’s job is to make sure the rules are enforced, but also to determine when it’s alright to let things slide. Family game nights are a vital way to bring everyone together at least once a week in a manner that is entertaining and fosters solid family relationships.
Starting a business can be an exciting but challenging venture. Those ready to become their own bosses may be excited but also nervous about whether their business has what it takes to survive the business landscape. Data from the Small Business Administration shows that an average of 80 percent of employer businesses survive the first year, and by the 10-year mark, 30 percent survive.
One demographic is increasingly establishing financial independence by becoming business owners. Black individuals continue to grow business opportunities despite the challenges to starting a company. Bankrate says Black-owned businesses increased by 38 percent between February 2020 and August 2021, according to a study by Merchant Maverick. That’s happening as the number of White- and Asian-owned businesses dropped slightly.
The following are five easy ways to help Black-owned businesses thrive.
1. Help increase their visibility. One of the ways to support Black businesses is to help them improve their visibility. That may mean doing interviews, participating in podcasts, sharing social media posts, or simply mentioning them in general conversation.
2. Be intentional with shopping. Research nearby Black-owned businesses, utilizing apps like Nextdoor or community boards on Craigslist. There’s also the Official Black Wall Street directory that offers a comprehensive list to search for products and services.
3. Share positive reviews. Increasingly people do their research online before working with a businesses, whether online or brick-and-mortar. Consumers read online reviews to inform their decisions. ReviewTrackers.com says 88 percent of all reviews are found on Google, Facebook, TripAdvisor, and Yelp. After patronizing Black-owned businesses, leave a positive review at one of the handful of most-viewed review sites.
4. Invest in Black-owned businesses. Finding working capital or startup funding can be difficult for any business owner. People with cash to invest can do so in Black-owned businesses to lend support.
5. Incorporate Black-owned businesses in networking and community events. Chambers of commerce, local publicity groups, schools, churches, and more can invite Blackowned businesses to participate in various events.
Black-owned businesses can use some support to continue to thrive and make an impact on the communities they serve.
ONE HEALTHY SNACK IDEA KIDS WILL LOVE
Overnight oats creations: Let kids take part in building jars or containers of overnight oats with their favorite ingredients. When old fashioned rolled oats are mixed with low-fat milk (or dairy alternatives), raisins, granola, fresh fruit, chia seeds, and even low-fat yogurt and left to sit overnight, the result is a spoonable treat that’s ideal for meals and snacks. Plus the fiber in oatmeal will help keep children feeling fuller longer.

Atrial fibrillation, often referred to as “AFib,” is more common among men than women. Johns Hopkins Medicine notes AFib is caused by extremely fast and irregular beats from the upper chambers of the heart. Males are more likely than women to develop AFib, though that does not mean the condition is not a threat to women. In fact, age is a significant risk factor for AFib, and a report from Henry Ford Health noted that women tend to live longer than men, which could explain why there were more women living with AFib in 2020 than there were men. The condition also manifests differently in men than women. HFH notes that high blood pressure and heart valve disease are more likely to lead to AFib in women, while coronary artery disease and a history of heart attack are most common risk factors for AFib in men.

ALL YOU NEED FOR A MEMORABLE NIGHT OUT
Don’t hype things up: Labeling a night as the “best night ever” or a “party to remember” can quickly tamp down the fun in a flash. It’s best to let the fun develop organically rather than putting a bunch of labels or expectations on the event.
CLASSIC WINE AND FOOD PAIRINGS
Champagne and oysters work because Champagne has a touch of fruity sweetness. This helps it cut through salty foods like oysters or even chips.

Creole/Cajun - Creole and Cajun cooking have similar influences but are not entirely the same. Creole originated in Louisiana and uses cooking techniques from Spain and France, but spices and ingredient combinations passed down from African cultures and Native Americans. Gumbos and bread puddings are popular Creole dishes. Cajun cooking originated when French Canadians migrated to Southern Louisiana in the mid-1700s. Popular Cajun dishes incorporate crawfish, alligator and frog.
