ADDRESS WINDSHIELD DAMAGE PROMPTLY Windshields are designed to protect drivers and their vehicles from wind and other natural elements while the cars are in motion. Windshields are made from tempered glass, which is processed by controlled thermal or chemical treatments to increase its strength compared to normal glass. While relatively strong for a pieces of glass, windshields are not impervious to damage. All it takes is a single rock or piece of road debris to be kicked up from the roadway and hit the windshield to cause a problem. Every day, motorists encounter pebbles or other small missiles that bounce up from the road and come in contact with their windshields. Many deflect with no problem, but under high speeds, debris can cause chips, dings, and even cracks in the windshield. Cracks easily spread from road vibration and heat and can compromise the integrity of the windshield. If your car’s windshield is cracked and it shatters during a collision, you and your passengers are at great risk of injury. In addition, police officers can write tickets if windshields appear to be unsafe. So it’s in drivers’ best interests to repair damaged windshields promptly. Drivers may be able to repair small dings themselves with a do-it-yourself windshield kit available at automotive retailers. If a crack is less than six to 12 inches long, it can probably be repaired as well. However, more significant damage will require that the entire windshield be replaced.

Extend the life of your vehicle: Scale back on short trips. The toll cold starts take on a vehicle can add up over time. When a car is started, condensation builds up in the vehicle’s exhaust system. On longer trips, that condensation will gradually evaporate. However, on short trips, that condensation often does not have enough time to evaporate, and over time too many short trips will lead to an accumulation of water in the muffler that can lead to rust and rust holes on the muffler. Short trips also can negatively affect gas mileage. When possible, leave your car at home on trips into town when you can just as easily walk or ride a bicycle. Over time, reducing the amount of short trips you take in your car will greatly reduce wear and tear on your vehicle and improve your fuel efficiency as well.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Forward Thinking Helps Pets in Natural Disasters DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Why do people leave their pets behind when a hurricane or forest fire approaches? And what happens to the pets that survive a disaster? -- Kerry in Cincinnati DEAR KERRY: Pet owners don’t intend to abandon pets to approaching danger, but it happens all too frequently: Pets get left behind when a disaster strikes. Sometimes an owner has to leave the pet behind -- rescue services prioritize human life over pets when a situation is dire. Sometimes, in the panic and confusion of gathering up things to evacuate, a pet will dart out the door. And sometimes, pets get abandoned because evacuation centers won’t allow pets inside. After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, when more than 100,000 pets were left to fend for themselves during and after the storm (www. louisianaspca.org/about-us/hurricane-katrina/animal-rescue-facts/), pet shelters radically changed the way they manage intake and care of animals. They became more proactive. They built bigger, stronger networks with other shelters locally and nationwide, and coordinated their efforts with emergency responders. (www.sierraclub. org/sierra/what-happens-animals-during-natural-disasters). They got better at reuniting rescued pets with owners. Pet owners can play a direct role in helping pet rescue efforts by being proactive well before a disaster strikes. Microchip your pets and keep contact info up to date. Keep up with your pet’s vaccinations and health checks. Most importantly, have your own evacuation plan that includes a “go” bag for you and for your pet. A pet’s “go” bag should include an extra leash and collar, a copy of their medical and registration records, pet food, waste pickup bags or pee pads, and extra medication if they take any. Know where to evacuate and which shelters allow pets. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County Why did my hydrangea not flower? Usually, it is because of poor pruning by humans or by Mother Nature. I have learned it is best to ask for more information before I give a complete answer. “Did you receive this hydrangea as a gift for Easter or Mother’s Day? Did it have pretty plastic or foil paper around the pot?” If so, the plant may be a florist hydrangea, and it is simply not hardy enough for our area. Mother Nature freezes the flower buds each year destroying the future flower.

Look for this weekly column! Your questions answered by the local Cornell experts.
Usually, these plants are big-leaf hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla). Most varieties bloom on old wood, i.e., wood that grew and produced flower buds during the previous year. Therefore, early, or late freezes or bitter winters may damage the flower buds. The other reason is pruning at the wrong time. If you cut back a hydrangea between the fall and early spring, you have trimmed off the future flower because it blooms on old wood. For further information, go to http://ccelivingstoncounty.org/

TREE SERVICES
SIMPLE WAYS TO WINTERIZE YOUR HOME Autumn days, particularly late autumn days, can be gusty, and strong winds can cause branches to fall off trees. Branches big and small can cause damage to cars, siding and roofs, and smaller branches can get clogged in gutters, potentially causing gutters to back up and leading to leaky roofs that damage a home’s interior. Take a walk around your property at least once per week during the fall, clearing any fallen limbs and trimming branches that appear one strong gust away from falling off of trees. Remove any branches that are hanging over your home and driveway so they don’t pose a threat to your house or vehicles.
HOME HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING
GUIDE TO PROPER TREE PRUNING Trees may require pruning for a variety reasons. Storms may have damaged branches, necessitating a pruning. In other instances, trees may have outgrown their yards, overpowering the landscape. Autumn and winter, when trees largely go dormant and fallen leaves make it easier to see the branches beneath, may be prime times to prune. Pruning during the dormant period also minimizes sap loss and stress to the tree, and can help cut down on the growth of fungi. In addition, insects are less likely to be problematic during the colder months of the year.

You also can use it to reduce noise from vibrations. For instance, I used it in my car to keep the carpet lying flat in the trunk.” -- J.T. via e-mail * “To soften butter without melting it, warm a bowl that is bigger than the butter stick and invert it over the butter on a plate. It’s nice before a meal because it makes a hard stick of butter easier to spread on bread rolls, but not so soft that you use too much.” -- T.G. in Indiana * “That time of the year is almost here. You know, the time when running the heater gives the whole house the zaps. To keep our carpets from giving us static shock, we fill a water spray bottle with 1 part laundry softener and 4 parts water. Give the air and carpet a spritz, and it kills the zaps.” -- A.O. in Canada * “Hard-water stains in the toilet are no match for denture tablets. Simply drop one in the toilet and let sit overnight. A quick scrub and a flush in the morning should do it.” -- P.S. in Washington

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Husband Is Always Tired ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband is tired all the time. He functions, but frequently has to sit to recoup his energy, even after a shower. He is diabetic and has been for over 10 years. He does not take insulin and manages to keep his A1C within 7.1 to 6.9. He weighs 207 pounds, and he’s 6 feet, 1 inch tall and 75 years old. His bloodwork always comes back normal, and a nuclear stress test came back negative. We have discussed this chronic fatigue with our family doctor. His only explanation is possibly low testosterone (the low end of normal). We know that some if not all of his medications list fatigue as a side effect, but we cannot persuade our doctor to do further tests. My husband does have an appointment with a cardiologist in May for a consultation and any suggestions, and also a checkup in six months with our family doctor. My concern is his medications and the fact that they are generic. I have read many stories about generic drugs and problems with their effectiveness. -- J.C. ANSWER: Fatigue, which is the sensation of feeling tired, is a nonspecific symptom and a complaint that’s commonly heard by general doctors. It can be related to many diseases, as disparate as multiple sclerosis to heart failure, anemia to depression, and chronic infection to sleep disturbances. However, your husband notes a severe intolerance to exertion, which makes me suspect systemic exertion intolerance disorder, also called myalgic encephalomyelitis or chronic fatigue syndrome. Poor sleep, difficulty thinking or concentrating, and having worse symptoms with standing also go along with this diagnosis. There is yet no lab test for confirmation. The diagnosis is made after considering other causes, and testing for those that make sense after a careful history and exam. Diabetes, when not well controlled, may lead to chronic fatigue. I’m not so concerned with generic medications as I am about too many or the wrong ones, so a careful review of medications is appropriate. I have previously recommended a graded exercise program for this condition; however, the study that led to this recommendation had several significant issues; many people will actually have worsening of their post-exercise fatigue, so exercise must be used very cautiously and on an individualized basis. Cognitive behavioral therapy has had some benefit, but we desperately need better treatments. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2021 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

BREAST CANCER TREATMENT Most patients with breast cancer have surgery to remove the cancer. Sentinel lymph node biopsy is the removal of the sentinel lymph node during surgery. The sentinel lymph node is the first lymph node to receive lymphatic drainage from a tumor. It is the first lymph node where the cancer is likely to spread. A radioactive substance and/or blue dye is injected near the tumor. The substance or dye flows through the lymph ducts to the lymph nodes. The first lymph node to receive the substance or dye is removed. A pathologist views the tissue under a microscope to look for cancer cells. After the sentinel lymph node biopsy, the surgeon removes the tumor using breast-conserving surgery or mastectomy. If cancer cells were not found in the sentinel lymph node, it may not be necessary to remove more lymph nodes. If cancer cells were found, more lymph nodes will be removed through a separate incision. This is called a lymph node dissection. Types of surgery include the following: • Breast-conserving surgery is an operation to remove the cancer and some normal tissue around it, but not the breast itself. Part of the chest wall lining may also be removed if the cancer is near it. This type of surgery may also be called lumpectomy, partial mastectomy, segmental mastectomy, quadrantectomy, or breast-sparing surgery. • Total mastectomy: Surgery to remove the whole breast that has cancer. This procedure is also called a simple mastectomy. Some of the lymph nodes under the arm may be removed and checked for cancer. This may be done at the same time as the breast surgery or after. This is done through a separate incision. • Modified radical mastectomy: Surgery to remove the whole breast that has cancer, many of the lymph nodes under the arm, the lining over the chest muscles, and sometimes, part of the chest wall muscles. Chemotherapy may be given before surgery to remove the tumor. When given before surgery, chemotherapy will shrink the tumor and reduce the amount of tissue that needs to be removed during surgery. Treatment given before surgery is called preoperative therapy or neoadjuvant therapy. Even if the doctor removes all the cancer that can be seen at the time of the surgery, some patients may be given radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or hormone therapy after surgery, to kill any cancer cells that are left. Treatment given after the surgery, to lower the risk that the cancer will come back, is called postoperative therapy or adjuvant therapy. If a patient is going to have a mastectomy, breast reconstruction (surgery to rebuild a breast’s shape after a mastectomy) may be considered. Breast reconstruction may be done at the time of the mastectomy or at some time after. The reconstructed breast may be made with the patient’s own (nonbreast) tissue or by using implants filled with saline or silicone gel.

Finnegan our 4 year old Golden Doodle has a zest for life and the ability to make sad people quickly feel better. He chases deer but never quite catches them, loves the dog parks and Paws and Claws, and itís really funny when the neighborhood kids ring our bell to ask, “Can Finnegan come out and play?” Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.
DID YOU KNOW? Thought they might be most often associated with dogs, ticks can affect cats as well. According to Blue Cross for Pets, cats are most likely to encounter ticks if they live near areas with lots of deer and sheep or in regions where other wildlife, such as hedgehogs and rabbits, are present. While ticks are active throughout the year, cats are most likely to encounter them between spring and autumn. That’s due in part to the climate during these seasons, which tends to be warmer and therefore more inviting to cats, compelling them to spend more time outdoors than they do in winter. Ticks, which are egg-shaped, are big enough to spot, so cat owners should conduct a careful examination of their cats’ fur each time they come into the house after spending time in the yard. Blue Cross for Pets notes that ticks feel like small bumps on a cat’s skin. Ticks are most likely to attach themselves to particular areas of a cat’s body. These areas include the head, neck, ears, and feet. Routine brushing, especially whenever cats come inside after time spent outdoors, can help cat owners spot and remove ticks from their cats. It’s important to recognize that indoor cats are not invulnerable to ticks, as other pets and humans can track ticks indoors. Periodic inspections and brushing of indoor cats’ can protect them from ticks and the diseases ticks carry.

Getting to Know Each Other Again at Churchville-Chili Middle School BY AMANDA PULEO
A
fter this past year of semi-isolation, many students are finding that in-person learning and working with classmates feels new and a little intimidating. At the Churchville-Chili Middle School, teachers have designed lessons for the first few weeks of school to help students ease back into building relationships with peers and redeveloping interpersonal skills.
In teacher Racheal Herman’s class, team members worked together to accomplish a goal: building a pyramid of cups without touching them.
Using only string and rubber bands, teams built interpersonal skills they will continue to use throughout their careers.
In teacher Dan Hickey’s fifth-grade class, students learned about the dangers of traumatic brain injury. They broke into small groups to design their own custom gear for protecting delicate eggs (representing brains) from concussion. Team members had to quickly work together to brainstorm solutions and collect building materials. Ultimately, they carefully shielded their eggs in creatively conceived structures that included combinations of towels, bubble wrap, parachutes, balloons and even peanut butter. Each team designated a single member to drop their construction from one of the school’s second story windows, while the rest waited anxiously below to see if their egg survived. The result? No eggs were harmed! Teacher Rachael Herman’s fifth-graders also participated in the egg experiment, and followed it up the next day with another All of the young engineers team building exercise – a Cup successfully protected their eggs
Challenge. Each team of three or four students tried to build a pyramid from plastic cups without ever physically touching their cups. “Students teamed up with peers they hadn’t worked with before,” said Herman. “Each team member was vital and necessary to the success of the group. The skills they practiced – listening, Teacher Dan Hickey’s fifth graders sharing, valuing each share their design for a protective other’s contributions, carrier that includes a parachute made from a shopping bag. collaborating – are all things they will need going forward. Activities like this in the beginning of the year give me a chance to evaluate each student’s skills so we can provide extra help where needed.” Enjoy this article? Going out of his way A thank you to the driver who went out of his way at a hotel I was staying at. When asked if he could drive me to a certain destination, he said he was sorry, and that it was beyond where they were allowed to go with their company van. However, after looking around and determining he wasn’t busy, he said to me, “Let’s go!” We hear all the time about people going the extra mile for their customers. Thanks for doing so!

Kindness matters! I have worked about 27 years in this town where my husband grew up. How happy we all were when my daughter, her husband and their 6-year-old daughter bought a home here! My granddaughter was homeschooled last year and hasn’t played with other kids in a long time. She is very bright, happy, friendly, energetic, kind, and eager without a mean bone in her body. This last weekend, I took her to the park. A little girl and her brother came to play. My granddaughter asked to play with them. They ran away, ignoring her each time she followed. Thinking they did not like her, she cried, heartbroken. So, we went to a neighboring playground, but there, another little girl and her brother kept running away. My granddaughter said, “Little girl, little girl…can I talk to you please? I haven’t had any little kids to play with in a long, long time and I want to know if……” The little girl ran away. “Little girl, can I please talk to you?” No response. I hugged my granddaughter as she started crying, and that little girl laughed at us. The welcome my granddaughter got here makes me cry. She starts school for the first time next week and is so excited to “meet some friends.” I pray she gets a classroom with warm, receptive, friendly children who will befriend this wonderful little girl with a big heart.
Social Security Cap Each week, I see comments regarding Social Security. How many of you realize there is a wage-base cap? According to IRS Topic 751 for earnings in 2021, this base is $142,800. Which means that any earnings over this amount are not subject to Social Security withholdings. If your neighbor earns $250,000, only the first $142,800 is subject to Social Security withholdings. That also means that Jeff Bezos pays on only the first $142,800. Also, Donald Trump, Bill Gates, Lady Gaga, George Clooney, Mark Zuckerberg, and the list goes on, only pay on the first $142,800 of income. The powers that be making the decision on the wage-base cap, I am sure, make considerably more than this cap. I’m certain there is nothing we little people can do to change this unfair practice, but it seems a significant raise in this cap could go a long way to making Social Security self-sustaining for years and years into the future. Hero or villain? It is amazing to watch the people who, just a year ago, praised healthcare workers as heroes be the same who are now condemning them as villains for not wanting the COVID vaccine. There were so many signs that praised them. Now, they are the enemy?

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Holiday Gift Shortages If you will have holiday shopping to do this year, you need to get started on it now. Manufacturers and store owners are saying there will be shortages. There are labor problems, problems with container ships that can’t be offloaded in ports, trucks that can’t deliver the goods, material supply-chain problems ... you get the picture. Here are two suggestions to keep gift-buying simpler this year: toys and books. TOYS -- If you have small children to buy for, shop now. Manufacturers of many of the most popular toys are saying that they’ve seen shortages of required materials on a global scale. Try local toy stores for items they have in stock now. BOOKS -- Call your library and ask for age-appropriate suggestions for young children. Then, list in hand, call your local bookstore. Ask if they have in stock what you need. If you can actually go to the store and pick up the books curbside, you’re ahead of the game. Otherwise try ordering online, but look for things already in stock. For teens and adults, consider buying them a Kindle, an e-book reader available on Amazon. (I’ve had three different versions of Kindle since 2016 and truly appreciate the way I can order a book and have it appear on my e-reader within minutes.) A new Kindle, a $15 case and a $50 gift certificate for e-books would be welcome gifts for readers. Check the delivery dates of the various Kindle colors. Some are available immediately; others aren’t. When it comes to online shopping, experts advise ordering items that are as close to home as possible, not across oceans. Beware of local shipping delays as well. Gone are the days of always receiving boxes in just a few days. If you order something online, track it, and follow up with a phone call if necessary. BREAST CANCER SCREENING MRI is a procedure that uses a magnet, radio waves, and a computer to make a series of detailed pictures of areas inside the body. This procedure is also called nuclear magnetic resonance imaging (NMRI). MRI does not use any x-rays. MRI is used as a screening test for women who have one or more of the following: • Certain gene changes, such as in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes. • A family history (first degree relative, such as a mother, daughter or sister) with breast cancer. • Certain genetic syndromes, such as Li-Fraumeni or Cowden syndrome. MRIs find breast cancer more often than mammograms do, but it is common for MRI results to appear abnormal even when there isn’t any cancer.

Add fresh flavor to grilled chicken Backyard barbecues provide the perfect opportunity for grillmasters to experiment with their favorite foods. Those who want to give grilled chicken a tasty twist can whip up this recipe for “Citrus Recado Chicken Breasts” from Eric Treuille and Birgit Erath’s “Grilling” (DK Publishing).
Citrus Recado Chicken Breasts Serves 4 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 teaspoon chili powder 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin 1/2 teaspoon ground coriander 1/2 teaspoon black pepper 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 tablespoon dark brown sugar 2 tablespoons canola oil 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice 1/4 cup orange juice 4 boneless chicken breast halves, slashed (see below) Salt Avocado Mango Salsa (optional) Combine garlic, chili powder, oregano, thyme, cumin, coriander, pepper, cinnamon, sugar, oil, lime juice, and orange juice. Add chicken and toss to coat evenly. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes, turning once. Grill according to instructions below. Sprinkle with salt. Serve hot with avocado mango salsa if you prefer. Outdoor grill: Grill skin-side down over medium-hot coals until skin is crisp, 7 minutes. Turn and continue grilling until chicken is opaque with no trace of pink, another 5 minutes. To slash the chicken breasts: With a sharp knife, cut 3 parallel slashes through the skin, about 1/4-inch deep. Marinate chicken up to 2 hours in advance. No calls please. TAKE A CUE FROM SUCCESSFUL WOMEN Make time for exercise. A sluggish body can make for a sluggish mind. Successful people need to be sharp, and exercise can help them maintain their mental focus. According to John J. Ratey, Ph.D., a clinical associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, muscles send hormones rushing to the brain where they mix with a substance called brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF. BDNF plays a role in brain cell growth and learning. Without it, brains can’t absorb new information or grow and learn. Exercise also helps relieve stress, which can make resolutions easier to see and make tasks less overwhelming.

affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.

THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB Salary: Of course everyone would love to earn more money when changing jobs, but there is more to changing jobs than just improving your bottom line. As you begin your job search, consider how much you currently earn and if that allows you to live a life you love. If so, don’t overemphasize finding a new job that pays considerably more than your currently earn. On the flip side, young professionals who want to start a family in the years ahead should consider the costs associated with such a decision and how the salaries they earn at their next jobs may affect what they want down the road.

RELIEVE STRESS THROUGHOUT THE DAY Stress affects people from all walks of life, and the causes of stress are as varied as the people it afflicts.
• • • • • •
In its 2017 Stress in AmericaTM survey, the American Psychological Association found that the three most common sources of stress were the future of the nation (63 percent), money (62 percent) and work (61 percent). According to the National Institute of Mental Health, routine stress that becomes chronic can result in a host of negative side effects. Such stress can suppress the immune system, disrupt digestion and have an adverse effect on sleep. But men and women who feel stressed at the end of each day need not resign themselves to sleepless nights and/or weakened immune systems. A proactive approach to alleviating stress during the day can help men and women reduce their stress levels and avoid the negative side effects associated with chronic stress.

[L]o! the eventide of the year, the melancholy season of Autumn.... the widowed quail, which is shivering on the fallen tree, utters her plaintive cry, causing a momentary sadness to oppress his heart. The oak rears its head above the plain, but is stripped of its foliage,—naked and alone,—a fit emblem of man in the hour of adversity. We see the leaves floating on the bosom of the river, and we feel that such too will soon be our condition.
