Quality time with your loved ones is crucia l.
Ironically, this non-romantic occasion started by promoting a romantic film on October 14, 2015. The director of a It’s a day to appreciate our families Filipino romantic drama film posted the hashtag #EverydayILoveYou, causing local and friends, as well as anyone you thrill. Those in charge of the marketing hold dear. campaign rode the wave, launching the hashtag on Twitter and appealing for widespread support, which eventually inspired another hashtag which is the title of this day.
This day extends beyond just couples.

MOMENTS IN TIME
Understanding food labels is a great first step toward eating healthy.
The History Channel * On Oct. 8, 1869, future auto inventor and mechanic Frank Duryea is born. In 1893, his Duryea Motor Wagon made its first successful trip, 600 yards down his street in Springfield, Massachusetts, before the transmission blew.
PAW’S CORNER
* On Oct. 9, 1936, harnessing the power of the Colorado River, the Hoover Dam begins sending electricity over transmission lines spanning 266 miles to Los Angeles. The dam was built for the collection, preservation and distribution of that most precious of all Western commodities, water.
Cat and Dog Can Coexist
* On Oct. 10, 1973, Spiro Agnew becomes the first U.S. vice president to resign in disgrace. He pleaded no contest to a charge of income-tax evasion in exchange for dropping charges of political corruption, which included accepting bribes even while vice president.
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I periodically dog-sit for a neighbor, keeping her small Beagle, Downy, at my house while she travels. The problem is my cat, Sparks. He is absolutely infuriated when I bring Downy home, even though Downy doesn’t bark at him. Sparks will yowl and glare at the dog every time they’re in the same room. And now, Sparks is peeing on the rug next to my bed the entire time that Downy visits. What can I do about this? -- Cheryl J., Reno, Nevada DEAR CHERYL: Ouch! Cats are notoriously territorial, not just with dogs but with other cats, too. And Sparks does not seem to be settling in to the notion that Downy is an OK guest to have. It’s clear that you’ll have to keep the two of them separate when Downy is visiting. But by leaving a mess on your bedroom rug, Sparks is signaling that separation may not be enough. The situation is really stressing him out. He’s drawing the line by marking your rug, a clear statement: This is my territory! The quickest way to resolve the issue, of course, is to stop dog-sitting for your friend -- or dog-sit by periodically visiting her home throughout the day to spend time with Downy and make sure he has food and water. But if that’s not possible, and you intend to keep Downy at your house instead, you’ve got only a few options. • Keep a clear separation between Downy and the cat. Place their food bowls in separate rooms with the door closed between them. • Change out the rug in your bedroom for a new one, and spray it with cat pheromone (available at pet stores) to try to stop Sparks from peeing on it. • Consider giving Sparks an anti-anxiety medication (available from the veterinarian) to reduce his stress. Best of luck. Be patient with both pets; they may never be comfortable around each other, but you may be able to keep them both from being too anxious.

WAYS TO REPURPOSE DRESSERS One of the benefits to becoming a skilled do-it-yourselfer is the chance to embrace projects that can breathe new life into objects that others might designate for the trash or donation pile. Renovating such items can save money and provide an entirely different purpose for the object. After upgrading design styles or moving, there’s a good chance the average homeowner has a spare dresser or chest of drawers he or she may no longer use. Repurposing such furniture can make for an enjoyable weekend DIY project. With a change of color, removal of drawers or a few minor modifications, dressers can be transformed in many different ways. Before discarding an old dresser, think of all the ways it can be transformed into another useful piece of furniture.

Paying It Forward, One Onion At A Time I was dining at my favorite local restaurant, enjoying my usual: the famous garbage plate. Now, as we all know, the portion sizes of these beasts could feed a small army! So I always bring snack size baggies with me to save small portions for later, as well as the extra toppings. I had bagged up all of my leftovers and was walking to my car when I saw an older gal struggling under the weight of a hefty garbage plate. The mighty plate proved to be too much and clattered to the ground, spilling some of its precious contents! I sprang into action as quickly as I could (I ain’t no spring chicken myself!) and saved what I could for this hungry patron. As I helped wrangle her meal, I noticed her plate was lacking the integral diced onions. How serendipitous! I promptly pulled my snack size baggie of diced onions from my pocket and handed it to her with a slight bow. She departed, bounty in tow, off to enjoy her sumptuous GP with diced onions. It made my day to make her day. Bon appetit! Thank you! I’d like to thank the parents of TE for raising an honest young man. Last week I lost my purse while running errands. I went home and couldn’t find it, so I went to the last place I remember stopping - my local dollar store. When I went back, T was the first person to greet me with my purse - what a relief! There was an older gentleman who said, “Lady, you’re lucky to get your purse back!” and he was right. I was so thankful, not for the $10 left in it but my license, DPA, credit cards, pictures, and more were all there. I’m 88 years old and the only thing I could remember was that I lost my bag. This is a tip for older ones: make a list of everything in your wallet and leave it in a safe place at home. Then if you lose it, you’ll be able to know what exactly you’re missing. T - it would be a better world if everyone was honest like you. Thank you!

SHARE WITH US Junk and More I cannot believe how the village is OK with a business using a historical area for junk/storage. This has been brought up to the village office and code enforcement. It seems like they are more concerned about a single vehicle in a remote location than the center of the village. Why? It makes me wonder about the special privileges some people/owners receive. It wasn’t that long ago the village was all over a business in the same area to clean up, so why does this place get a free pass? I know NOTHING was said because MORE junk is being piled up. Boats, vehicles, trailers, vans, lawn mowers, appliances, plows, A-Verdi boxes, lawn furniture, toys, etc. Visitors are seeing this area and the village should be ashamed. STOP THE SMOKERS Please stop the people taking over some of the senior apartment buildings by smoking inside every day for years. It is putting others’ health at risk. Get them out! They do it because they can. What are you afraid of? You’re not very good at your job. Do your job or find another one that you’re good at. You don’t take away one’s right and give it to another. Prepare Your Garden for Winter’s Onslaught Remove spent plants Decomposing organic material is the basis for compost and other fertilizers. However, vegetable plants that are left to sit can lead to decay in the garden. Decaying plants can serve as hosts for pest populations and diseases. Rotting vegetables also can drop unwanted seeds into the soil, which eventually can strip nutrients that normally would go to next year’s crops. Ornamental plants and perennials can be cut back in fall. Cut down stalks and remove leaves. Plant a cover crop A cover crop protects the soil and can return nutrients to it. When the soil is bare during winter, weed seeds can easily blow in and lie in wait, ultimately becoming a problem during the ensuing year. Cover crops can include clover or field peas, which will increase the levels of available nitrogen. Amend the soil Fall is a perfect time to add soil amendments, such as manure and compost. These fertilizers will add nutrients and break down gradually, enriching the soil over the winter.
INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT FALL The colors of fall foliage are actually present year-round. Fall is known for its colorful foliage. But the pigments responsible for those colors are actually present year-round. According to the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, green, yellow and orange pigments are present year-round. However, during spring and summer, the leaves serve as factories where many foods necessary to help the tree grow are manufactured. That process takes place in the leaf in cells containing chlorophyll, which gives the leaves their green color. This process ceases as hours of daylight decrease and temperatures drop. As a result, chlorophyll breaks down, the green color disappears and the vivid colors of fall foliage begin to appear.
Divide bulbs Divide plant bulbs and plant them where you want flowers like daffodils and tulips to grow in the spring. Prune dormant plants Wait until plants are dormant to prune them and adjust their shape. Most shrubs and trees should be pruned in late winter, right before new growth. Move potted plants Bring delicate plants into a sheltered area, such as a greenhouse or indoor garage, so they can continue to thrive during the winter.

Mourning became a mainstream societal measure for almost everyone that lost a loved one. Women, however, became the leading figures in mourning as they followed strict rituals and rules, especially when their husbands died. From Black dresses to black veils which made women sick, mourning has become a fascination of the past.” Admission is free and coffee and donuts will be served. RochesterB YCity Music Teacher Zachary Arenz SUZIE W ELLS Named New York State Teacher of the Year BY SUZIE WELLS Zachary Arenz, music teacher at Rochester City School 54, Flower City School, has been named New York State Teacher of the Year for 2024. His passion toward his craft overflows as he talks about his teaching journey. Arenz says his mom was a teacher, his sister is a teacher, so it seemed to be in his blood. He says, “Teaching was the only job I really knew I wanted to do.” When his mom went back to school to train as a teacher herself, Arenz, only ten at the time, saw her passion ignite, and that inspired him to pursue the craft himself. “It was never a negotiation,” he says; he just knew he would teach. And when he was in high school, he solidified his interest in teaching music. He says he loved participating in the arts. A Long Island native, Arenz completed his Bachelor’s and Masters degrees in Music Education at SUNY Fredonia. Fresh out of grad school, Arenz spent a year teaching 7th-9th grade music students in a bilingual school in Sweden, and then came back to the States to teach in the City of Rochester and has been there ever since. Recognized as Teacher of the Year in the Rochester City School District in 2014 and 2021, and a finalist for 2023 NYS Teacher of the Year, Arenz says, “It’s an incredible honor” to receive the award. It provides increased opportunities for Arenz to continue learning, opening new lines of professional development he didn’t know existed. He is excited to use his platform to share his colleagues’ experiences and share the needs for development within the Rochester City School District. Arenz loves teaching music because he says it gives him the opportunity to connect with the students and make a difference with them. He says, “When my students are connected to a lesson, they’ll work for it. The more you connect, the more they open up.” He says breaking down barriers with the kids is paramount to their success in and outside the classroom. Arenz says he’s had a growing network supporting him since the day he started in Rochester ten years ago. He particularly describes the impact of now-Assistant Principal Alison Schmitt throughout the years. After the Rochester CSD mentor process, Arenz continued working with Schmitt through the school’s Peer Review option, gaining valuable feedback on strategies and best practices. He says “it’s quite serendipitous” that Schmitt is now the school’s well-placed Assistant Principal.
A bassoonist with the Genesee Valley Wind Ensemble outside school, Arenz says he devotes his skills almost exclusively to RCSD students. Arenz says his goals are to give his students the tools needed to become lifelong musicians – not necessarily becoming expert performers, but proficient participants in the world of music, perhaps taking in live shows, appreciating the hard work musicians put into the craft to produce concerts and such. He aims to teach his students enough skills to keep learning through life. And he adds lightheartedly, “Hey, it’d be cool if a student gave a shoutout at the Grammy’s, but ya know.” Most importantly, he hopes he imparts to students the importance of being kind, of being good human beings. He explains, “When something traumatic happens, they still show up to school tomorrow. I can’t expect them to come to school fine like nothing happened. The only way we’re going to tackle that is for me to know who they are. If they know that when they cross the threshold into my classroom, they can talk about what happened, a weight lifts.” Arenz says “Everyone has a backpack they carry – our kids’ backpacks tend to be heavier than many, or heavier than we hope they’d carry by adulthood, but really everyone has a backpack, and we need to be aware of that weight. We need to understand the students, connect with the students, and know the students, so they can feel comfortable in the safe space that is our classrooms.” Arenz’s passion for teaching and compassion toward his students overflows, and it’s no wonder he received the NYS Teacher of the Year Award. To current and aspiring teachers, Arenz cheers, “We got this. Teaching’s hard. We know that. We will find success when we are all supporting each other, and our success will translate to student success.” RCSD Superintendent Carmine Peluso says Arenz’ “commitment to his profession and dedication to his students is inspiring. He is a natural leader and a fantastic representative for teachers across the state.” NYSUT President Melinda Person says Arenz “exemplifies the lifechanging work our teachers do every day … guiding children and families through restorative practices, turning his classroom into a refuge where students feel supported… proof that emphasizing the whole child is key to healthy students, public schools, and communities.”

THE BENEFITS TO JOINING A LOCAL GYM Resolving to get healthy is a worthy goal. A healthy lifestyle that includes a nutritious diet and routine exercise can improve quality of life and decrease a person’s risk for various ailments, including diabetes and cardiovascular disease. In an effort to exercise more, many men and women choose to join local gyms. Such a decision can have a profound impact on efforts to get healthier, benefitting men and women in myriad ways. Gym members exercise more than non-members. It’s long been assumed that joining a gym motivates people to exercise more often, as few people want to pay monthly membership fees for facilities they don’t use. But researchers at Iowa State University backed up that assumption in a study of 405 relatively healthy adults. Half of the study participants had belonged to a gym for at least 30 days, while half had not been gym members for at least three months. Participants who belonged to a gym exercised an average of 484 minutes per week, greatly exceeding the 150-minutes-per-week minimum recommended by the Department of Health and Human Services. Non-members exercised an average of just 137 minutes per week, with only 18 percent meeting the recommended weekly exercise guidelines. Joining a gym improves overall health. While common sense suggests joining a gym improves overall health, the Iowa State study actually proved that to be true. The study found that, compared to non-members, gymgoers tended to have lower resting heart rates, higher cardiorespiratory fitness and smaller waist circumferences. Researchers found that those benefits were especially prevalent among participants who had kept their gym memberships for a year or more.

Joining a gym can increase the chances of getting more well-rounded workouts. DHHS guidelines say adults need at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity and should perform musclestrengthening exercises on two or more days each week. Non-members may be able to meet the guidelines for aerobic activity on their own, but the Iowa State study found that only about 20 percent of Americans meet guidelines for strength training. Gym memberships provide access to weights and strength-training machines that non-members do not necessarily have at home, increasing the chances that gym members will enjoy fuller, more well-rounded workouts. Joining a gym can be a social endeavor. While many people join gyms to get healthy, it’s important that prospective members not overlook the potential social benefits of gym memberships. Exercise classes hosted at local gyms can provide great opportunities to meet like-minded individuals, and such individuals may ultimately become support systems people can lean on to achieve their fitness goals. HOMETOWN TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Seizure-Like Reactions Pose the Question of Epilepsy --DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband experienced seizure-like
episodes without tonic/clonic body movements in high altitude. These episodes occured while he was traveling, being physically active in Colorado and skiing in France. Both episodes happened at least 12 hours after physical activity. Our general physician back home felt that these were not true seizures, instead a reaction to possibly being dehydrated in high altitudes. A vast amount of testing resulted in nothing unusual going on with his cardiovascular system or his brain. But just recently, he had another episode two days after being active, hydrating at sea level and banging his head -- with more body movement this time. I have been researching online, and seizure-like reactions seem to occur due to electrolyte imbalances. It is very hard to get to a neurologist without an excessive wait time. Do you think antiseizure medications are warranted? -- S.S. ANSWER: It’s important to separate a seizure (which anyone can get if there is enough stress to the brain) from epilepsy, a condition where the person is susceptible to recurring seizures. For it to be considered epilepsy, a person generally needs at least two unprovoked seizures (with no unusual stress to the brain) at least 24 hours apart. Only epilepsy is treated with long-term antiseizure medicines. There is indeed a risk of developing seizures while at a high altitude. In addition, there are many other conditions that can provoke a seizure. You mentioned electrolyte imbalance, but sodium (too much or too little) as well as too little amounts of magnesium and calcium are among the most common. Low blood sugar is a frequent cause. Some recreational drugs cause seizures, but withdrawal from drugs, especially alcohol, is more common. Metabolic diseases of the kidney and thyroid are also common. Sleep deprivation, brain injury (especially stroke, but also trauma), brain tumors and brain infections are all common triggers that your husband probably received an evaluation for. Had it only been the first seizure, my advice likely would have been the same as your physician’s, although I probably would have suggested a consultation with an epileptologist (a neurologist with special expertise in seizures). Now that he has had a second -- and unprovoked -- seizure, my suspicion that he has epilepsy is much higher. (In hindsight, it’s clear that the first reaction really was a seizure.) Most people experiencing their first seizure while at a high altitude were eventually found to have epilepsy after further testing, including an electroencephalogram (EEG). The high altitude doesn’t cause the seizure; it just increases the risk of a seizure in a person who has an underlying propensity for it. This may also occur with many medicines, especially those used for depression. Your husband should see an epileptologist as soon as possible. I strongly feel that it’s unwise for nonexperts to prescribe anti-seizure drugs, except as a treatment until a patient can be seen by an expert. I have seen that done many times, and it is done improperly, at least according to the expert a patient eventually sees. Your husband needs a timely and comprehensive reevaluation. Epileptologists recognize that new onset seizures in an adult require a more timely appointment.

How physical activity can help in the fight against breast cancer
Breast cancer is a complex disease that affects millions of women across the globe each year. Though the American Cancer Society (ACS) reports that only about 4 percent of women diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States are under age 40, women of all ages can take steps to protect themselves against this deadly disease. Exercise benefits women in a myriad of ways, and that includes lowering their risk for breast cancer. The ACS notes that researchers are increasingly linking exercise to a reduced risk for breast cancer. Though the reasons behind that link remain unclear, some theorize that the positive effects of exercise on body weight, inflammation, hormones, and energy balance could be why regular physical activity helps women reduce their risk of breast cancer. Body weight and breast cancer The National Cancer Institute reports that being obese after menopause can significantly increase a woman’s risk for breast cancer. In addition, the ACS attributes the rise in hormone receptor-positive breast cancers to an increased prevalence of excessive body weight. Routine exercise is a highly effective way to lose weight and keep weight off, which in turn could lower women’s risk for breast cancer.
Does physical activity really reduce breast cancer risk? The human body is complex, and a host of factors, including those like age that women have no control over, can affect cancer risk. However, engaging in routine physical activity seems to be an effective way for women to reduce their risk for breast cancer. In fact, the Breast Cancer Research Foundation estimates that one-third of all breast cancer cases could be prevented with positive lifestyle choices that help women maintain a healthy weight, including exercise.
Routine physical activity can be a significant weapon in women’s arsenal as they continue their efforts to prevent and overcome breast cancer.
Being sedentary and breast cancer Exercise is a not a sedentary activity, and that could be another reason why women who are physically active have a lower risk for breast cancer. The ACS notes that more than one study has linked sitting time to a higher risk of various diseases, including breast cancer. Researchers with the ACS analyzed data from 77,462 women, who they followed for an average of 15.8 years.
GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111
None of the participants had cancer when the study started, but researchers found that women who sat for six or more hours per day during their free time had a 10 percent greater risk for invasive breast cancer than women who sat for less than three hours per day during free time.

BRAIN-HEALTHY HABITS TO EMBRACE Cognitive decline is a condition that is often associated with aging, but even middle-aged people can experience memory loss or cognition issues. The Alzheimer’s Association says that more than five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. By 2050, that number could rise to as high as 16 million people. More than 747,000 Canadians are living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, says the Canadian Alzheimer’s Association. Although there is no definitive way to prevent dementia, living a long, vibrant life may be possible by encouraging some healthy habits for the brain. It is never too late or too early to begin health and lifestyle changes. Exercise: Becoming more active can improve brain volume, reduce risk for dementia and improve thinking and memory skills. The journal Neurology found that older people who vigorously exercise performed better on cognitive tests than others of the same age, placing them at the equivalent of 10 years younger. Increased blood flow that occurs with physical activity may help generate new neurons in the hippocampus, an area of the brain involved with learning and memory. The Harvard Medical School says aerobic exercise may help improve brain tissue by improving blood flow and reducing the chances of injury to the brain from cholesterol buildup in blood vessels. Quit smoking: The Alzheimer’s Association indicates that evidence shows smoking increases the risk of cognitive decline. Smoking can impair blood flow to the brain and cause small strokes that may damage blood vessels. Eat healthy foods: Foods that are good for the heart and blood vessels also are good for the brain. These include fresh fruits and vegetables,
EMPLOYMENT ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111
whole grains, fish-based proteins, unsaturated fats, and foods containing omega-3 fatty acids. Neurologists state that, while research on diet and cognitive function is limited, diets, such as Mediterranean and Mediterranean-DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), may contribute to a lower risk of cognitive issues. Consume caffeine: Caffeine may help boost memory performance and brain health. A Journal of Nutrition study found people ages 70 and older who consumed more caffeine scored better on tests of mental function than those who consumed less caffeine. Caffeine may help improve attention span, cognitive function and feelings of well-being. Information from Psychology Today also indicates caffeine may help in the storage of dopamine, which can reduce feelings of depression and anxiety. In addition, compounds in cocoa and coffee beans may improve vascular health and help repair cellular damage due to high antioxidant levels. Work the brain: Engaging in mentally stimulating activities can create new brain connections and more backup circuits, states Dr. Joel Salinas, a neurologist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. Working the brain through puzzles, reading and participating in social situations can stimulate the release of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a molecule essential for repairing brain cells and creating connections between them. A good way to combine these lifestyle factors is to take an exercise class with friends, mixing the social, stimulation and exercise recommendations together. Cognitive decline can come with aging, but through healthy habits, people can reduce their risk of memory loss and dementia.
