Driving is a multisensory experience that requires careful coordination and mastery of a wide array of skills. Understanding the rules of the road and having sufficient practice are only part of the equation. Being able to see the road and react to obstacles, signage and more is crucial. Drivers should not downplay the importance of visual acuity when they turn their ignition keys. Acceptable vision is involved in all components of driving. Motor vehicle operators need to have clear vision to read gauges and operate the controls of the car. Distance vision also is essential to identifying road hazards and seeing other cars on the road. The health resource All About Vision says aging and visual changes at any age can affect a person’s ability to see moving objects while one is in motion - as is the case while driving a car or truck. In addition, changes in peripheral vision can increase blind spots while driving and affect reaction time. Many motor vehicle agency vision tests do not take into consideration all of the factors that can impact vision while driving. Seeking care for visual problems and changing driving habits when necessary can help people stay safe on the road.

Keep Halloween Candy Away From Pets DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Halloween is upon us again, and while the tricks and treats are fun for kids, they can be dangerous for our pets. Please remind your readers that the candies and chocolates in a trick-or-treat bag or sitting by the door are hazardous because many of the ingredients are toxic to dogs and cats. -- Cheryl T., Lansing, Michigan DEAR CHERYL: You’re absolutely right! Dogs especially are at risk from ingesting Halloween candy, but any pet in the house can be at risk from not just these foods but some popular decorations as well. Chocolate is toxic to dogs. Sugar-free candies can be toxic as well, especially if they contain xylitol. Keep all candy, chocolate and gum out of pets’ reach during the festivities. Afterward, store leftover candy up out of their reach. Make sure children don’t hide bags of candy where a pet can get at them, such as under the bed. Help them find a location that they can access but the dog can’t. Decorations may be a hazard as well, not just to your pets but to wildlife. That stretchy material used to create fake spiderwebs outdoors can trap birds and insects. Cats may ingest the strands if they are fascinated with the texture. Avoid burning real candles as they may get knocked over by a pet. If your pet does get into the candy bowl or eats a decoration, contact the veterinarian right away. They’ll advise you whether to bring your pet in right away for treatment, or to watch for signs of illness (such as constant drooling, vomiting, lethargy or changes in personality).

COMMON CONDITIONS THAT CAN AFFECT DOGS Fleas: Fleas are parasitic blood-suckers that reside on the coats of pets. Scratching, hot spots, hair loss, and tapeworms (which are carried by fleas) can be symptomatic of flea infestation. Some people may notice actual fleas on their dogs, while others may identify the flea dirt against a dog’s skin. Flea prevention medicines and medicated shampoos can help keep fleas at bay.

HAUNTED BERGEN HOUSE HOMEOWNER, CATHY HEGLUND, TALKS SOUNDS, SPIRITS & THE SUPERNATURAL BY ELAHA HASHMATULLAH
I
t’s Halloween, the season when horror movies come to life... or do they? A holiday originating from the Celts, early practices included bonfires and costumes, typically made of animal heads and skins, to ward off ghosts or spirits of the other world. Halloween, properly known as All Hollow’s Eve, came to the United States in the 1840s. Today, it is a celebration where people dress up as their favorite characters, go trick or treating, visit haunted houses, and have fun by telling (and watching) horror stories. The haunted houses they explore are not actually haunted, but what if truly haunted houses did exist…complete with real ghosts? Welcome to the Bergen. Local homeowner Cathy Heglund believes that her Bergen home is truly haunted. Mysterious activities in and around her house have caused many to wonder if ghosts really do exist. In fact, her home has become known as the Haunted Bergen House. Cathy Heglund shared some of the very spine-chilling and spooky stories of her experience in this house. A family home, Heglund’s parents purchased the house in the 1950s. Originally built in 1815, the farmhouse sat empty for a while before her parents purchased it. Heglund has given tours of the house to the local community, as well as to paranormal investigators and even a few television shows. Heglund’s own paranormal history with the house goes back to when she was only three years old. On a rainy day years ago, three-year-old Heglund was outside her home playing in a mud puddle with a stick. Heglund’s mother, who was also outside, told her to move away so she didn’t get wet; however, Heglund was having too much fun and didn’t listen. Seconds later, she felt a boom underneath her feet and realized that the swirls she was making started flowing the opposite direction. Leaning forward to look into the puddle, she felt an arm around her stomach and a person’s chest against her back.
I n s t i n c t i v e l y, Heglund touched the arm around her, and what she said next is surprising: the arm around her felt warm. She could tell it was a man’s arm, but there had been no one outside This unassuming family home in Bergen is the site of beside her mother many unexplained phenomena! and herself. Turning around, Heglund found herself eye to eye with what appeared to be the spirit of a Native American man. He was smiling and nodding towards Heglund’s mother. “Go mind your mother,” he said. She turned

to her mother and back again, but the man was already gone. Heglund believes she came face to face with a ghost that day. Heglund also stated that the house displays activities of different kinds at different times. “Turning around, Several times, this has included Heglund found lights turning on by themselves, doors closing by themselves, the herself eye to television volume rising by itself, eye with what and things being moved around in the house. One of those items, appeared to be [a] Heglund’s doll, even talked and spirit!” move itself around the house. It would seem the Haunted Bergen House is full of enough mysteries to burst through the windows. Another unexplained incident occurred when Heglund was 16 years old. One day while in her room, Heglund kept hearing noises like papers shuffling. The room next door belonged to her younger sister. Suddenly, the door flew open and her younger sister called their mother into her room. Heglund’s sister was looking for her dolls. Heglund entered the room to find everything was open from the closet to her chest of drawers. Her sister was unable find her Russian dolls. Their mother talked to Heglund’s sister for about 15 minutes. Getting aggravated, Heglund walked downstairs to ask her mother to whom she was talking. Their mother had been in the kitchen the entire time but had only heard Heglund’s side of the conversation. Heglund told her mother that she had been talking to her sister, but her mother couldn’t believe it. They both went to Heglund sister’s room. Everything in the room was back to how it should have been; and her sister was nowhere to be seen. As Heglund tried to explain what had happened, her mother pointed out the window and said “Look, there’s your sister’s school bus right now,” as Heglund’s sister exited the bus, having just returned home. Whether or not you believe in ghosts, the Haunted Bergen House and Heglund’s spinetingling tales are enough to send a shiver down anyone’s spine. The Haunted Bergen House certainly holds many secrets. It is sure to delight mystery seekers for decades to come. Enjoy this article? INFLUENTIAL JAZZ MUSICIANS Scott Joplin (c. 1868-1917): Born into a musical family that included his mother, a singer and banjo player, and his father, a violist, Scott Joplin grew up in Texarkana, learning to play the guitar and later the piano at a very young age. By the time Joplin was a teenager, he was working as a traveling musician and eventually became the foremost composer of ragtime jazz. Biography.com notes that Joplin was a true student of music, studying at the George R. Smith College for Negroes in Missouri during the 1890s. Though one of history’s most celebrated jazz musicians, Joplin also composed ballets and operas.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Turkey or Ham? What is Thanksgiving going to look like this year? That’s a big question, and many of us don’t have the answers yet. Part of it depends on whether we’re still the ones cooking the turkey or whether that particular baton was passed years ago. Part of it depends on whether we’re close enough to relatives that they can drive over or whether somebody would be required to board a plane. Part of it depends on whether anyone present has a pre-existing condition that would make getting COVID especially risky. I’ve done an informal poll of those around me and scattered across the country. One person has flatly stated that his family will all be present with the triple garage turned into a big dining room. Another said it will be a repeat of last year with everyone in their own home with online meeting software running during dinner. Another is delivering a turkey dinner to her mother. Yet another is taking his parents out to a fancy buffet. Some say it all depends on whether everyone in the group has been vaccinated. Some don’t want to take the shot. Many refuse to be around those who didn’t take the shot. A few are leery of small children who aren’t eligible for the shot, but who are in school with others whose parents might or might not have gotten vaccinated. Or maybe there’s a teen who’s been released from home prison, as they’re calling it, and might or might not have been socially distancing from pals or wearing a mask, which might or might not work anyway. Then there’s the wee matter of breathing used air on planes and whether we’re sitting next to someone who sneaks off his mask when the stewardesses aren’t looking. It gets complicated, this business of calculating how to handle Thanksgiving. The biggest debate used to be: turkey or ham? (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

BREAST CANCER SCREENING Mammography is the most common screening test for breast cancer. A mammogram is an x-ray of the breast. This test may find tumors that are too small to feel. A mammogram may also find ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). In DCIS, there are abnormal cells in the lining of a breast duct, which may become invasive cancer in some women. Mammograms are less likely to find breast tumors in women younger than 50 years than in older women. This may be because younger women have denser breast tissue that appears white on a mammogram. Because tumors also appear white on a mammogram, they can be harder to find when there is dense breast tissue. The following may affect whether a mammogram is able to detect (find) breast cancer: • The size of the tumor. • How dense the breast tissue is. • The skill of the radiologist. Women aged 40 to 74 years who have screening mammograms have a lower chance of dying from breast cancer than women who do not have screening mammograms.

It’s such a small thing, but makes a big change in look!” -- E.L. in Massachusetts * Instead of using costly brass polish, try a little lemon juice and salt. Another brass polish you probably have right now is ketchup. Apply a thin layer and buff off with a soft rag. * Experts say to always crack your egg on a flat surface, rather than using the edge of a counter or bowl. More egg-tastic advice is to crack eggs into a small bowl instead of directly into ingredients. If you have a sneaky “bad egg” in your dozen, it’s better to find out before you ruin your baking. * “I love to search for recipes online, and I have learned to pay attention to the comments section. You’ll find a lot of explanation and frequently a tweak that many people have found successful. Comments have saved me from oversalting a dish, as well as making necessary adjustments in temperature and cooking time. I have found complicated techniques broken down in ways that were helpful. It pays to check out the comments!” -- W.G. in Missouri * Attention salad eaters: Got a thick dressing that’s high in fat? Rinse lettuce before dressing your salad. Wet or moist lettuce traps less dressing. If your dressing is light, give salad greens an extra spin. Drier lettuce holds on to dressing, making lightly dressed salad more flavorful. * Another great use for baking soda: Add a cup or two to your toilet bowl. Swish and let sit for 1-2 hours. Flush for odor control and shine.

LONG-DISTANCE CAREGIVING (NAPSI)—Chances are, at some point you will be a caregiver to a friend or family member. Providing care and support can be challenging in any circumstance, but caring for a loved one who lives far away presents a unique set of challenges.
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
When providing care for loved ones who do not live nearby, keep the following three tips in mind.
Choosing Not to Treat Prostate Cancer
Plan ahead. Learn your loved one’s medical wishes, contact information for doctors as well as important financial and insurance information.
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: Every year, I used to get a physical, which included a prostate exam as well as blood tests with PSA. When my doctor retired, I had a hard time finding a new one I liked. It has been three or four years since my prostate was checked, but my new doctor doesn’t do the prostate exams (I am 63). He says that recent studies do not recommend them, and I have seen news reports about the unreliability of the PSA test. How do you find out if you have prostate cancer if you don’t look for it? My brother-in-law found out he had it at 52, and it was successfully treated. I don’t really want to wait until I am showing symptoms, and there is no history in my direct family. What do you think about this? -- T.D. ANSWER: Prostate cancer isn’t really one disease. It can be very aggressive -- both with local invasion and spreading to bones quickly -- but it also can be very indolent, hardly growing at all over years. Yearly prostate cancer screening with PSA is more likely to find the slower-growing cancers, since they are around for a long time. The goal of screening is to find aggressive cancers, the fast-growing ones that can go from undetectable to too-late-to-do-anything-about in a very short time. But a downside is that screening may lead to unnecessary treatment of the more-indolent cancers, most of which can be carefully monitored and will not need surgery or radiation, at least not for years. If a man elects to undergo prostate cancer screening, he should understand the benefits (finding prostate cancer early enough it can be cured) and the risks (treatment for prostate cancer causes complications frequently; these can include incontinence and loss of sexual function). Not treating low-risk prostate cancer reduces the risks. Low-risk prostate cancer is defined by a PSA below 10, a very small or non-detectable tumor by palpation or imaging and a low Gleason score, which is based on how the tissue looks to the pathologist. Six or less is low risk. Most men in this situation do not need immediate treatment. Some men have difficulty NOT treating cancer, but treatment does not appear to improve the already good prognosis. Choosing not to treat is hard for some men.
Research community options. Many older adults need a little help to stay healthy and independent. Area Agencies on Aging and other communitybased organizations can connect caregivers to programs that help with transportation, personal care services, nutrition, home modification and repairs, legal services, falls prevention programs and more. Care for yourself. The Eldercare Locator can connect caregivers to local resources that can help, including caregiver support programs that can provide training, and support groups and other resources that help caregivers better support their loved ones—and themselves. The Eldercare Locator can help both care recipients and their longdistance caregivers. Through its website, www.eldercare.acl.gov, and national Call Center at (800) 677-1116, the Eldercare Locator connects long-distance caregivers to resources that can provide assistance where it is needed most—in the care recipient’s own community. The Eldercare Locator is funded by the U.S. Administration for Community Living and is administered by the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging.
NATURAL WAYS TO FIGHT FALL ALLERGIES Take natural supplements. A study published in the journal Clinical and Experimental Allergy found participants who used tablets of the herb butterbar showed significant allergy relief after only one week. Select herbs from reputable manufacturers who certify them.

A substantial and growing body of evidence indicates that exposures to chemicals commonly found in the environment and many consumer products – and in women’s bodies – are contributing to the rising rates of breast cancer seen in the decades following WWII, paralleling the production of synthetic chemicals. Federal law permits the usage of chemicals such as parabens, phthalates, flame retardants, and pesticides, many of which are endocrine disruptors. You have a right to know if the products you use contain compounds that may increase your risk for disease, including breast cancer. Compiled by the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester

S E V RA Wren lesson congratulations! Thank you and congratulations to the person who was corrected about the nesting habits of wrens. So many today take umbrage and become angry at anyone who doesn't totally agree with them or who finds fault with them. This person's gracious response lightened my day almost as much as watching those creatures who inhabit our environment with us. Thank you, Dr. Krisy, and staff "It's another trip to York Veterinary Clinic for me. I have been paralyzed since January, but now, I am back to 95% walking and running! Dr. Krisy and staff (and my mom) are awseome! Thanks to therapy from Dr. Krisy, I can walk with just a little limp, and I can scratch my ears now with help from mom or dad. At the vet, Dr. Krissy and each tech and staff member called me by name. Their love and kindness made me wag my tail. My mom and I don't have enough words to say thank you for an awesome job. God bless you and keep up the good work! “ - Symon Wren update If you can bear to read one last comment about the birds in the Penny Saver tube: I decided the birds weren't actually going to use the nest, so I removed the twigs and discovered, tucked into the back corner, the sweetest little nest, all woven with fine twigs and feathers. It was, to my mind, a perfect nest but a terrible location (roadside). I hope the lady wren found as nice a nest somewhere to her liking. Livonia Library Book Sale I would like to thank everyone involved in the Livonia Library Book Sale! It was fabulous! Thank you to the beautiful lady who helped carry my purchases to my car. Your sale made my day. The Livonia Library rocks! - Mary
Zero not Hero? For shame! You should be ashamed of yourself, calling hospital and medical workers "zeroes." They have worked countless hours from the very beginning, sacrificing their time with friends, their families, and their own safety without the vaccine. They deserve the same inherent rights as you do, including the right to decide what is best for themselves and their families. Are you aware that even if you are vaccinated, you can still pass the virus on to that child you mentioned? Before you point fingers, why don't you consider that you could just as easily pass it on to someone else? How dare you think you have the right to call out these incredible people who worked throughout this entire pandemic? They need and deserve our support! Instead of telling people to quit and retire from careers they love, why don't you move to someplace [where] they would appreciate your willingness to take away people's rights to their bodies...? RN Zero This is all you need to know. "Evidence suggests the U.S. COVID-19 vaccination program has substantially reduced the burden of disease in the United States by preventing serious illness in fully vaccinated people and interrupting chains of transmission." - CDC. You need a refresher course. Immunity is your own body? No medical professional should put any patient at risk with anything in any way. Thank God you are retired, or I would say to get out of this profession! I know many people who don't want a nurse like you taking care of them, especially with your attitude. Coaching Kids I understand all volunteers are working so hard to give our children wonderful experiences. However, if you sign up for that position, please really want to do it and invest in it. A couple weekends ago, an organization came to our school for a game, and it seemed like there was no adult coach for the juniors team around anywhere. A couple young girls were running the squad. I overheard what sounded just like bullying from the one child helper to another girl in the squad, instead of coaching. The coach was nowhere to be found to intervene. Young girls aren’t ready to be coaches of other young girls yet. They need an adult around. Coach the older girls to be helpers and make sure the young ones are learning but also not being bullied or hurt. Let’s help them to feel safe and want to come back and learn again next year.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.

WORKING PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE Set reasonable goals. Much of the difficulty men and women experience in regard to finding a healthy work-life balance may be a byproduct of working parents spreading themselves too thin. Setting reasonable goals can help avoid that, but doing so requires taking commitments to one’s employer and family into consideration before agreeing to take on new projects or setting deadlines for projects to be completed. This should be applied to both work and home. If a work deadline is unreasonable, professionals should discuss that with their employers, who might change the deadline or arrange for extra persons to work on the project. At home, parents should avoid taking on too many projects, such as chaperoning a child’s dance or coaching a sports team, if doing so will adversely affect the amount of time they get to spend with their families.
