SAFETY IN NUMBERS: WHY IT PAYS TO REPLACE HEADLIGHT BULBS IN PAIRS Why replace bulbs two at a time? In an effort to promote the importance of changing headlight bulbs two at a time, Philips developed the “Change In Pairs” safety campaign, which aims to educate motorists about the dangers of dimming lights while promoting the many reasons that changing bulbs in pairs makes the road safer for all travelers. To support this safety initiative, Philips also packages its Upgrade Headlight Bulbs in pairs. Though replacing two headlight bulbs when only one is dimming may seem unwarranted, maintaining a consistent light output in both headlights makes the road safer for drivers, their passengers and oncoming motorists. When only one bulb is replaced, the resulting light output can be both unbalanced and unpredictable, providing inadequate lighting that can compromise driver visibility. In addition, oncoming motorists may experience difficulty seeing vehicles with just one headlight operating at full capacity, and some may even mistake oncoming cars and trucks for motorcycles, creating positioning issues for drivers on both sides of the yellow line.
PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Readers Sound Off on Letting Cats Outside DEAR READERS: My recent letter from a pet mom who strongly believes cats should be allowed outside really touched a nerve among readers. They sent in some great responses, both for and against. Only a few are published here due to space constraints, but you can read all of them, unedited, at www. pawscorner.com. Here are just a few: DEAR PAWS: I do not have a cat, but I would keep them indoors because of the dangers from and to them. And I do not let my dog run free either. -- Mary Ann C. DEAR PAWS: My current cat thrives on being outdoors, and she loves coming in and being a lap cat, too. I never let my cat stay outside all night, however; definitely more dangers then. -- Carol T., Leicester, New York DEAR PAWS: I think a person who lets any of their pets roam freely outside is uncaring, selfish and inconsiderate. A dictionary says this of a pet: “any domesticated or tame animal that is kept as a companion and cared for affectionately.” -Signed, I love my pet DEAR PAWS: Our pet cats still have an instinct to kill and be wild and free, just like big cats have. About the ticks: Just pull them off, put a little medicine on the bite, and that is that. -- Adrian M. DEAR PAWS: I agree with you. I lost two inside/outside cats when living in Florida. One got killed in the road; one got killed by a neighbor’s dog. After that I kept cats inside. -- Linda K. DEAR PAWS: I just can’t understand someone saying they “love having a cat,” but they certainly don’t seem to love the mess they leave in everyone else’s yards! -- Becky H. What are your thoughts on the issue? Send them, or any pet care questions, to ask@pawscorner.com.

GENESEE-ORLEANS MINISTRY OF CONCERN INC.: HELPING TO BUILD A STRONGER COMMUNITY by Gretta Smith
“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” - Helen Keller
T
o have a thriving community, it is critical to support all community members. Genesee-Orleans Ministry of Concern, Inc., the agency of last resort, which has existed for over 50 years, strives to do just that. It is our mission to help individuals and families going through difficult times, not only with temporary assistance but also rehabilitation and support to get them to a point where they can once again lead a sustainable life on their own. We do this through many programs, including our furniture program, Christmas program, Just Friends Program, financial literacy classes, emergency shelter assistance, utility assistance, and day-to-day client advocacy. These services are made possible with support from our community: from you. This year we are running our annual Christmas Program which helps provide children with gifts for the holiday season. Last year, we were able to provide gifts to 279 children! The amount of donations we received was truly inspiring and admirable. This program helps relieve parents of the stress that can often come with the holiday season and allow children to wake up Christmas morning to presents under the tree. The gratitude from all our families last year was extremely touching, and our communities were able to make that happen. This year, families may fill out one Christmas Wish List per child with all ideas ranging from clothing and winter apparel (so they can build that snowman again this year) to bedsheets (to cozy up in as they wish for a snow day) to books and games (so they can travel in imaginary lands) and art supplies (to draw a land of their own)! Organizations and donors can either choose to adopt children specifically or donate items for our Christmas “Shop.” Our only request is that these be new items only and not electronics.

The families that are not adopted will be able to pick Organizations and doout presents for each of their nors can either choose to children. Depending on the adopt children specifinumber of donations we cally or donate items for receive, we estimate each our Christmas “Shop!” family will be able to choose 3-5 gifts per child. We also ask for donations of wrapping accessories including wrapping paper, bows, ribbons, and Christmas tags that we will be able to send home with the parents. If you would like to sign up for the Christmas Wish Lists, you may fill them out at Genesee-Orleans Ministry of Concern in Albion or (by appointment only) at Catholic Charities in Batavia. You may also call Gretta Smith at the Ministry of Concern at (585) 589-9210 to fill a Wish List out over the phone. Please reach out to Gretta if you would like to donate to this year’s program. Christmas Wish Lists are due by December 3rd and donations are due by December 8th at the Albion office. We were overwhelmed by the support last year and would truly appreciate continued support again this year. We could not do it without you. We could not do it “without community.” Furthermore, please keep in mind our furniture program if you know of anyone who is looking for a place to donate their gently used furniture. Our employees will pick up the furniture and deliver it to a family in need, hopefully on the same day, at no cost to either party. For a list of items we accept, contact us at our Albion office. In addition, if you or anyone you know is in need of any personal care items, furniture, bedding, kitchen appliances, or other household items, please reach out to our agency. For more information about our other programs or ways you can help, please visit our website ministryofconcern.org or call us at (585) 589-9210.

STAY SAFE WHEN STRINGING HOLIDAY LIGHTS Choose a fresh tree. The NFPA recommends celebrants who prefer natural Christmas trees choose ones with fresh, green needles that do not fall off when touched. Dry trees are more likely to catch fire than freshly cut trees. Adding water to the tree stand each day will keep trees fresher longer. When placing the tree, avoid placing it too close to heat sources, making sure it is at least three feet away from fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents, or lights.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT FALL The colors of fall foliage are actually present year-round. Fall is known for its colorful foliage. But the pigments responsible for those colors are actually present year-round. According to the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, green, yellow and orange pigments are present year-round. However, during spring and summer, the leaves serve as factories where many foods necessary to help the tree grow are manufactured. That process takes place in the leaf in cells containing chlorophyll, which gives the leaves their green color. This process ceases as hours of daylight decrease and temperatures drop. As a result, chlorophyll breaks down, the green color disappears and the vivid colors of fall foliage begin to appear.

Data from the United States Department of Justice indicates that partner violence accounted for 20 percent of all violent crime in the U.S. in 2018. The World Health Organization defines intimate partner violence as behavior within an intimate relationship that causes physical, sexual or psychological harm. Such violence can include acts of physical aggression, sexual coercion, psychological abuse, and controlling behaviors. Violence perpetrated by both current and former spouses and partners falls under the umbrella of intimate partner violence. Domestic violence is so prevalent that the National Network to End Domestic Violence reports that it fields more than 19,000 calls on a typical day. Anyone who is a victim of domestic violence or suspects a loved one or acquaintance is being abused is urged to call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 (SAFE) or 1-800-7873224 (TTY) right away.

HIKING: Hiking is a fun activity that can be enjoyed nearly year-round, but it’s especially enjoyable in the fall. That’s because few things in nature are as captivating as a park or forest w hen the fall foliage is in full bloom. Early fall also boasts ideal temperatures for hiking, as the mercury likely w on’t rise enough or sink low enough to produce the kind of extreme temperatures that can compromise a hiker’s afternoon. Instead, fall temperatures tend to be mild and comfortable, allow ing hikers to fully enjoy their often beautiful surroundings.

CAREGIVERS, TAKE CARE: HOW TO KEEP YOUR CAREGIVING DUTIES FROM OVERWHELMING YOU (NAPSI)—Caregiving for a loved one can be a fulfilling, yet overwhelming experience. Forty million Americans provide care for their aging loved one each year, and spend an average of 24.4 hours per week doing so. Try as one may to create a balanced lifestyle, it’s a role that easily crowds out other important areas of life, including personal and professional relationships, and generates high levels of stress that could lead to serious health problems long-term if not managed. Caregivers should feel empowered to adopt the following tactics to lighten the burden, and achieve a renewed sense of control: Remember your own health: It’s important to not lose sight of your physical and mental health during particularly stressful times. Improve your energy level with smart eating choices: plan easy, healthy recipes that take less than 30 minutes, schedule grocery deliveries, or subscribe to meal kits. And, committing to just 10 minutes a day of moving your body will help you feel energized, while boosting your mental health. Exercise is also a good way to engage with your loved one—join them for a walk or even a water aerobics class. Be transparent with your employer about your role as a caregiver: Burning the midnight oil to meet your caregiver and professional responsibilities doesn’t do you, your loved one, or your career any favors. Speaking candidly about the pressures you face as a caregiver with your employer can help relieve stress in the long run. Discuss options such as flexible work hours or working remotely, and set realistic expectations for yourself. Leverage technology: Utilize tools that offer you visibility into your loved one’s health status and simplify the complexities of coordinating care. These solutions allow you to refocus your attention on the key moments that matter most with your loved ones, while offering the peace of mind of knowing your loved one will have 24/7 access to help. For example, Philips Cares is a mobile application that enables you to easily form and activate a care circle of trusted family and friends, access meaningful insights into your loved one’s wellbeing, and manage your Philips Lifeline personal alert service. It helps you and your care circle be there for your aging loved ones, easing and enriching their aging journey. S E V RA Good Samaritans I wish to give a huge thank you to two good Samaritans who helped retrieve my Golden Retriever on Friday, October 22nd, who was going back and forth in the middle of Main Street in Springwater. I am very grateful also to all of the traffic which stopped from both directions and showed such patience until my beloved pet was safe. It was just a clear reminder that there are a lot of wonderful, caring people in the world! - Truly grateful, Carol R. Rochester Philharmonic What a treat to listen to the RPO this past Saturday as they performed the score of Alfred Hitchcock's PSYCHO. And to watch the movie on the big screen as the music was played live was a great experience. The shower scene was especially hair-raising! We're so lucky to have such talent in our area!
Better spent I love football, but the owners of the Buffalo Bills are working on a plan to build a new stadium at the cost of over 1 billion dollars. To do this, they are asking taxpayers to help pay the bill. Then we have multi-millionaires paying even wealthier multi-billionaires for a 10 minute thrill ride into space. My question is this: what has happened to our humanity? What has happened to our value system? Each night on the news, we are witness to poverty and famine beyond belief in many countries - not to mention our own. Let’s re-evaluate our priorities. How many starving children could we feed and provide medical care for with the money spent on frivolity? What an idiot! Joe Manchin is holding this country hostage because of his personal interests in coal mining! The President of the United States went to Glasgow for the all-important COP26 meeting without a legislative commitment thanks to Senator Joe Manchin from West Virginia! The earth is burning up, and we all need to act fast if we want an environment that is safe to live in, especially for our children. Manchin should be the first senator impeached! Boo to you! I would like to say to the person who stole part of my trailer hitch in the [local town] area, you must have some guts. As you were stealing my trailer hitch, you must have seen my license plate that says “Disabled Veteran.” This was a very costly hitch. I hope you are proud of yourself. I use this hitch for hauling dirt and other things for our home. That is why it is a tri-ball hitch. I hope you feel good about yourself.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF VEGETARIAN DIETS
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
COPD Lung Function Can’t be Restored ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I read your recent column on pulmonary fibrosis. I especially appreciate knowing that there are medications known to slow the progression of lung disease, reduce exacerbations and reduce mortality. With a 20-year-old diagnosis of COPD and having been prescribed medications to reduce exacerbations, you might imagine my interest in your article. I’m wondering how pulmonary fibrosis differs from COPD and if the two medications that you mention (pirfenidone and nintedanib) might be helpful in slowing the progression of lung disease in patients such as myself. Have any studies been completed using these medications on patients with COPD? -- S.A. ANSWER: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease -- its two main forms are emphysema and chronic bronchitis -- usually, but not invariably, is a result of long-term exposure to lung toxins, especially smoke. In the most common case of COPD, due to cigarette smoking (at least, that’s the most common in North America and Europe: cooking fires are still a common cause in less developed countries), stopping the exposure will dramatically slow down further damage. Unfortunately, there are no established treatments that can restore lung function in people with moderate to advanced COPD. Pulmonary fibrosis is, by contrast, a rare disease; about 30,000 people in the U.S. are diagnosed each year (compare that with the 9 million people in the U.S. diagnosed with chronic bronchitis last year). The exact mechanism of action of pirfenidone and nintedanib is not known, but they are not thought to be effective in COPD. Surprisingly, I did not find a published trial looking at whether these drugs might be effective. The need for new therapies to treat COPD is so great that I would have thought some researcher might have tried it, despite the long odds.
Many people change their lifestyles in an effort to improve their overall health. Changing the foods one eats is one of the more common ways people try to get healthy, and many people find adopting a vegetarian diet helps them realize their goals. Adopting a vegetarian diet can be a great way to improve personal health. Vegetarians may now find it easier to maintain their lifestyles than ever before thanks to the year-round availability of a variety of fresh produce and more vegetarian dining options offered at restaurants. Even premade vegetarian foods are more widely available at markets and grocery stores. Approximately six to eight million adults in the United States eat no meat, fish or poultry, according to a Harris Interactive poll commissioned by the Vegetarian Resource Group, a nonprofit organization that disseminates information about vegetarianism. Many more avoid red meat while still eating fish and poultry. Although studies into vegetarianism long pointed out the potential nutritional deficiencies of such a diet, the tides have shifted, and many nutrition experts now note how eating plant-based foods offers sufficient nutrition and can reduce the risk for chronic illnesses. A vegetarian diet may offer protection against cardiovascular disease, some cancers, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. Data published in the Proceedings of the Nutrition Society found vegetarian diets are high in carbohydrates, dietary fiber, essential vitamins and minerals; offer an abundance of antioxidants; and are very low in saturated fat. However, switching to a vegetarian diet is not enough to lose weight or get healthier. Choosing the right type of vegetarian foods - including whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and proteinrich legumes - and controlling portions is key. Vegetarians may have low cholesterol, as well as fewer incidences of stroke and obesity and cardiovascular incidents than non-vegetarians. Whether this is entirely food-based, or because vegetarians tend to also embrace other healthy habits, has not yet been determined.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Social Security Gets Big Benefits Bump The news is in. Our Social Security benefit for 2022 will increase by 5.9%, slightly less than the 6.1% estimate the government put out this summer. Still, that’s much greater than the 1.3% increase we saw for 2021 and the 1.6% the year before. The average monthly dollar increase will be $92, making the average benefit $1,657 per month for a single person. For a couple, a $154 increase would come to $2,753 per month. The official mail on the cost-of-living adjustment will come out in December. I’ve done my calculations for next year, and once again I shake my head. We’ve been notified already that I’ll have a rent increase. Heating fuel is likely to go up 47%. We all know what has happened at the grocery store. Medicare Part B is sure to go up, maybe a $10 per month increase. There is one worrying note, and we need to think about how it will play out for us individually. The question is: Will that increase move us into a higher tax bracket? It depends on our provisional income. That number is any income (pension, wages, dividends and more) not from Social Security, plus half the amount of Social Security. Those of us who come in under $25,000 won’t have a federal tax put on our Social Security. If that number is between $25,000 and $34,000, there will be a tax on half of our Social Security income. Over that and it goes up to a tax on 85% of our Social Security income. If your situation for 2022 is likely to put you in the category of having to pay taxes on your Social Security benefit, you can elect to have them take money out of your check each month. If you want to learn about that, call the IRS at 1-800-772-1213 and ask for IRS Form W-4V. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

MAKE THE HOLIDAY SEASON MORE ECO-FRIENDLY Create an eco-friendly party theme. Many holiday parties have themes. For example, “ugly sweater parties” have become so popular that many clothing manufacturers now intentionally produce colorful sweaters that might otherwise draw the ire of fashionistas. Hosts planning to throw an ugly sweater party can easily transform such festivities into something more eco-friendly by encouraging guests to purchase their sweaters from thrift stores. A Christmas tree planting party is another eco-friendly party theme that can benefit the planet and revitalize local forests at a time of year when they might be depleted due to the demand for natural Christmas trees.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Realizing that surgical antiseptics were marketable to just a small group of professionals, the makers of Listerine began to market the product as a floor cleaner -- as well as a cure for gonorrhea. While we won’t necessarily vouch for the latter, in a pinch, just add a capful for every gallon of water and mop away. Other uses include dandruff elimination, deodorant, a numbing agent for toothache pain and tick removal. * A 1938 issue of “Mademoiselle” magazine had a handy bit of advice for college gals seeking suitors: have your mom send you some flowers to trick all the boys into thinking they have competition. No word on whether it worked. * Ferdinand Demara, aka “The Great Impostor,” posed as a surgeon aboard a Navy destroyer in the Korean War, where he was forced to operate on 16 people. He proceeded to speed-read a textbook on general surgery and was able to successfully perform all the operations without losing a single patient. EMPLOYMENT

* On average, a 4-year-old will ask 400 questions in one day.
NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * You can cut the bitterness in some varieties of greens by soaking them in ice water for roughly an hour before serving. Use a salad spinner to get all of the water off. * “Place an ice cube (or ice chips) in carpet divots left behind by furniture legs. This will help the fibers “plump up,” and the spot will disappear!” -- A.I. in Utah * Remove the annoying sticky residue from price tags with WD-40 or baby oil. This is for use on hard surfaces only. If you are unsure, test in an inconspicuous spot first to make sure the oil doesn’t leave a stain where the tag was. * “To help repel the dust on baseboards between cleanings, wipe with a used dryer sheet. To make this even easier, you can put the dryer sheet over a Swiffer-type floor cleaner. This way, you don’t even have to bend down.” -- M.E. in Alabama * Felt circles are great for putting under small appliances on the kitchen counter. They are easier to move around, and they won’t scratch the countertops. You can find them at the hardware store, or make your own by cutting out what you need from a piece of felt and attaching it to the bottom of your appliance with double-stick tape ... or even a drop of glue! * Running a washing machine that isn’t full not only wastes energy and water, it also wastes money because you’re paying to run more washes. Always fill the machine -- but remember not to overload it! This applies to your dishwasher, too.
