We are also a collection place for “Toys for Tots” Accepting new, unwrapped toys ($10 or above) as well as books.

GIFTS FOR PEOPLE WHO HELP YOU YEAR-ROUND Mailman Mail finds its way into the mailbox even when the weather outside is frightful. Mailmen spend much of their workdays outdoors braving the elements, so a gift that helps make their time outdoors more comfortable makes sense. But before gifting their mailmen, shoppers should know that there are rules governing the gifts that the mailman can and cannot accept. According to the United States Postal Service®, mailmen can accept gifts worth $20 or less from a customer per occasion. However, carriers are forbidden from accepting cash and cash equivalents. In addition, mailmen cannot accept more than $50 worth of gifts in a calendar year. Moisture wicking shirts can help mail carriers stay warm on cold days, and they’re designed to quickly move moisture away from the body to the outer layer of the shirt. Such shirts can be worn beneath carriers’ uniforms to keep them warm and dry on cold days. Shoe inserts, a basket of sunscreen and some healthy snacks that can be eaten on-the-go are other great gifts for mail carriers.

Boolean Box STEM Educational Computer Kit: Kids can learn coding, electronics and animation. This build-it-yourself computer kit was designed with input from thousands of girls in coding camps and classes. Ages 6+. Kano Computer Kit Touch: Make your own tablet. Kids learn to code with over 100 creative challenges and stories. Then they can use it to make art, games and music. Ages 6+. Tinkering Labs Electric Motors Catalyst STEM Kit: With the help of 10 challenge cards, budding scientists can build all sorts of robotic creations, create their own unique toys, power electric model cars and more. Ages 8+. Makeblock Starter Robot Kit: This DIY, 2-in-1, advanced mechanical building block kit provides a fun way for kids to learn robotics, electronics and programming while creating a real robot controlled by remote or smartphone. Ages 10+. This season, it seems, the holidays can be full STEAM ahead.

DID YOU KNOW? Data from the United States Department of Justice indicates that partner violence accounted for 20 percent of all violent crime in the U.S. in 2018. The World Health Organization defines intimate partner violence as behavior within an intimate relationship that causes physical, sexual or psychological harm. Such violence can include acts of physical aggression, sexual coercion, psychological abuse, and controlling behaviors. Violence perpetrated by both current and former spouses and partners falls under the umbrella of intimate partner violence. Domestic violence is so prevalent that the National Network to End Domestic Violence reports that it fields more than 19,000 calls on a typical day. Anyone who is a victim of domestic violence or suspects a loved one or acquaintance is being abused is urged to call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 (SAFE) or 1-800-7873224 (TTY) right away. POLL According to the National Weather Service, the Rochester region’s average snowfall totals between 70120 inches, depending on location. Last year, Rochester registered a total of 50.4 inches. As snow peaks into our local forecast, how do you prepare for winter? - I celebrate winter outdoors, planning more outings with family and friends - I keep my vehicle fueled and food and supplies well-stocked - I prepare everything as soon as flurries fly - I prep nothing until snow is a foot deep - I stock up on reading material and cozy jammies Poll ends 12-5-2023

TIPS TO FIND THE RIGHT LAWYER Contact your local bar association. According to the ABA®, bar associations in most communities will make referrals according to specific areas of law. This can ensure people without much or any experience hiring lawyers find one with the right experience and practice concentration. Local referral services also may help, and the ABA® notes that many, though not all, have competency requirements for lawyers who wish to be referred. When speaking with a referral service, ask if they have such requirements in place and how frequently they reevaluate lawyers they refer.

HOMETOWN

Planning pointers for holiday hosts Hosting is a significant part of the holiday season. From late November until New Year's Day, millions of people across North America welcome friends and family into their homes. Whether you're hosting a small gathering with locally based loved ones or welcoming distant relatives into your home for several days, the following are some planning pointers to ensure your home is ready and guests feel welcome this holiday season. • Hire a local cleaning service. The holiday season can be hectic. Holiday functions at school, office parties, community events, and more fill up social schedules between late November and early January. Busy social schedules leave little time for house cleaning, which is a must before welcoming guests into a home. A local cleaning service can clean the whole house for hosts welcoming overnight guests or focus on a few popular entertaining areas if party guests will be going home at the end of the night.

2.

• Get an early head count. Ask party invitees and prospective overnight guests to RSVP early enough to ensure you can accommodate everyone's needs. Additional seating may be required for holiday parties, while hosts may need to arrange for extra bedding for overnight guests. The earlier you know who's coming, and potentially staying, the more time you have to ensure you can accommodate everyone.

3.

• Rent items from a local party supply store. When hosting large gatherings, a local party supply store can be the place to go for decorations, seating, food trays and utensils, and more. Such establishments also may rent specialty supplies like outdoor heat lamps for cold weather parties or tents and outdoor tables and chairs in areas where the weather is warm during the holiday season. Hosts can typically rent everything they need to host the party, saving them the expense of buying items that may just sit in storage the rest of the year. • Arrange for transportation. Whether guests are flying in from distant lands or local friends, relatives or neighbors stopping in for the night, hosts can arrange for transportation to and from their homes to ensure everyone arrives safely and makes it home without incident. Pick overnight guests up at the airport so they see a friendly face upon arrival. When hosting gatherings with local family and friends, encourage others to share how they intend to get home and recruit designated drivers if you intend to serve alcohol. Hosts can take heed of these planning pointers so guests feel welcome and have a good time this holiday season. TF23B455 GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Here’s a Tip On internet memes, they call them “life hacks,” simple tricks to save you perhaps time, money or simply frustration. Here’s mine: Place a bowl near your entryway. Place your keys in the bowl when you come home. They stay there until you leave. No more lost keys. Now more life hacks for your tip file. -- JoAnn Put a dryer fabric softener sheet on the back of a fan. It sticks and will distribute a fresh scent through your room. -- T.I. via email Put an apple in the potato bag to keep them from growing buds. Check often. -- E.W. in Oregon Sharpen your scissors by cutting through aluminum foil. All you have to do is fold a piece over on itself and use your dull scissors to cut strips. Seasonal Tree A big thank you to the person(s) who decorate the evergreen tree at the corner of Cheese Factory and Quaker Meetinghouse Roads in Honeoye Falls. We always look forward to seeing the latest decorations as they change to celebrate the current holiday/season. You have consistently brightened this corner for years and have brought a smile to many faces. Please know your hard work is appreciated very much!

Merr Christma!

Don’t Eat Then To the person who felt the need to bash your local farmers over….. mud…. you reamed out farmers over mud. Farmers are under more than enough pressure already, with an alarming percentage of American farms going out of business year after year after year. Only a small percentage consistently make a profit. If you want them to get out and pick up dirt, expect to pay them more for it. If you still don’t get it, grow your own. Quit being entitled, eat the food they grew for you, and be grateful. More Being Added I see more junk and vehicles are being added to the Historical Area? I am not sure why this is OK. I know of many people that have contacted the village about this area. Is anything being done? As some residents are afraid to say anything because of the connections involved. When people are driving thru the area this is what they are seeing. Do we want this to be seen as a junk area? Are there any regulations regarding storing vehicles, boats, RV’s, containers? When the village board is asked, they say they will look into it, but never give a response on why this area is OK to be treated as a junkyard. Some residents take pride in their surroundings and village, while others say they do, but take advantage of their so-called liberties. Can we please clean up the historical site? Garbage is garbage no matter who or what it is!!

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * A high-school principal once disciplined a student by making him sit in the basement while reading the U.S. Constitution. The punishment must have taken effect, because said student (who also memorized parts of the document) was Thurgood Marshall, who grew up to become the first Black Supreme Court justice.

HOW SMALL BUSINESSES CAN MAKE THE MOST OF LOCAL MARKETS Balance engagement with patience. NFIB® recommends that business owners tone down their sales efforts without coming off as disengaged. Warmly welcome visitors to the booth or stall and express a willingness to discuss products customers appear interested in. But keep in mind that many people attend festivals and marketplaces to browse, so give them space after welcoming them to the booth. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Daena Ford: A 31-Year Journey with Braddock Bay Raptor Research BY SUZIE WELLS

F

or over three decades, Daena Ford has dedicated her life to the world of raptors through her involvement with Braddock Bay Raptor Research (BBRR). From her early days as an intern to her current role as the organization’s president, Daena’s passion for these majestic birds has shaped her career, leading to significant contributions in education and conservation. Daena’s journey with BBRR began in 1992 when she joined as an intern during her junior year at SUNY Geneseo, where she studied biology. Intrigued by every aspect of BBRR, including hawkwatch, raptor banding, and education, Daena became hooked on the world of raptors. Over the years, she evolved from intern to BBRR’s education director, spearheading the acquisition of raptors for educational purposes, developing and implementing programs onsite and throughout the community. In pursuit of her passion, Daena returned to school, earning a teaching degree and secondary science education certification from Roberts Wesleyan University. She taught middle school science in Hilton for six years, continuing her volunteer involvement with BBRR. Since 2001, she has held leadership roles within the organization, currently serving as its president, overseeing all operations, including field research and education programs. Daena’s fascination with raptors goes beyond their beauty; she says she sees them as symbols of strength and grace, playing a crucial role as environmental barometers, “helping us keep tabs on the health of the ecosystems we share with them.” Raptors, with their “wow factor,” captivate people’s attention, offering a unique avenue for people to connect with nature. For her, raptor migration is a marvel, and witnessing the spectacle at Braddock Bay sparked a deep passion. She says, “Seeing hawks, sometimes hundreds or thousands at a time, swirling overhead as they pass you by is just amazing. Learning about where they travel, and how they survive these journeys has been fascinating, and there’s still more to be discovered.” In 2016, BBRR revived its education raptor program, and Daena played a pivotal role by building enclosures on her private property to house four education Photo credit: Diane W. Dersch raptors – a Red-tailed Hawk, Great Horned Owl, Broad-winged Hawk, and a Merlin. These birds, unable to survive in the wild due to injuries, now serve as ambassadors for their species, contributing to BBRR’s educational outreach. Over the past few years, Daena has conducted nearly 500 programs, reaching over 25,000 people across 12 different counties. From formal presentations in schools and Scout groups to participating in festivals, Daena and her team have covered extensive ground. Notably, her involvement in bringing education birds to the City of Rochester’s recreation centers underscores her commitment to broadening the reach of environmental education.

biggest migration days of over 40,000 raptors, seeing a rare Swainson’s Hawk banded at our station, and helping to fit a snowy owl with a transmitter. Above all, she says the best part of her work with BBRR out in the field with wild birds or working with the education raptors, is being able to share activities and birds with various audiences as well as watching students have their “first” moments during field trips, spotting their first bald eagle or first owl in the wild. Daena enjoys bringing the birds to schools and recreation centers in the city of Rochester, providing urban children the opportunity to experience wild animals in a unique way, and introducing them to species they could see on their own even in the city. Every year since 2017, Daena brings the birds to the 5th grade art classes at Manor Elementary School in Honeoye Falls. Students observe and sketch the birds and then fine tune their art pieces. Finished artwork by several students goes on display at BBRR’s annual Bird of Prey Days festival in the spring. Daena emphasizes the importance of raptors as indicators of ecosystem health. With some species facing population declines, she encourages people to take small steps, such as planting native plants, avoiding harmful pesticides, installing nest boxes for cavity nesters, and cleaning up trash, to support these essential predators. Increasing awareness is key to fostering a connection with the natural world. Daena’s life extends beyond her work with BBRR. As a former naturalist and conservation educator, her involvement in the Hawk Migration Association of North America and her passion for birding and hiking showcase a lifelong commitment to environmental conservation. Her family, including her two children and beloved rescue dogs, adds another layer to her rich and fulfilling life. Daena Ford’s remarkable journey with Braddock Bay Raptor Research encapsulates a lifetime of dedication to raptors, education, and environmental conservation. Her tireless efforts have not only enriched the lives of those she encounters but have also left an indelible mark on the world of raptor research and education. As she continues to inspire and educate, Daena invites everyone to explore the wonders of nature and join the cause for raptor conservation. Check out Braddock Bay Raptor Research at www.bbrr.org and on FB and IG.

Daena says she has too many favorite memories to recount, including exciting encounters with wild raptors, such as finding her first ever Northern saw-whet owl in the wild, witnessing one of our

Vitamins for Macular Degeneration Coincide With New Cramps ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been told at the age of 70 that I am in the early stages of the eye disease macular degeneration. The doctor told me to take PreserVision AREDS 2 vitamins. He said that I will be taking them for the rest of my life. I started them immediately, and a few nights later, I started having severe left leg cramps to the point where I woke out of a sound sleep to jump out of bed and shake off the cramp. Is this typical? -- C.L. ANSWER: For the dry form of age-related macular degeneration, the AREDS and AREDS2 vitamins are the usual treatment. Although they are not a cure, they do slow progression of the disease. My experience with these has been that they almost never cause side effects, and muscle cramping is not a reported side effect by the manufacturer. The timing, however, certainly is suspicious. You can try stopping them for a few days, then restarting them to see if the cramps are truly affected by the vitamins. If they are, you have two choices. The first is to deal with cramps the same way that people who get them at night for no particular reason deal with it, which is by getting regular moderate exercise and stretching the calf and hamstring muscles before bed. Having weight on the toes is a trigger for many people, so very light bed covers that aren’t tucked in can be surprisingly helpful. I’ve had a few readers come up with devices to keep all weight off of their toes in bed. Your second option is to discuss an alternative with your eye professional. The AREDS and AREDS2 formulas were shown to be helpful, but some eye professionals only choose a few components of the formula.

THE DANGERS OF BELLY FAT What’s so bad about belly fat? Seeing belly fat as a merely cosmetic concern overlooks the effects it has on overall health. According to the Mayo Clinic, belly fat is not limited to the extra layer of padding just below the skin known as subcutaneous fat. Belly fat also includes visceral fat, which means it extends to deep inside the abdomen and surrounds internal organs. Johns Hopkins Medicine notes that visceral fat in the belly is very close to the liver, which can turn it into cholesterol. From there, the fat goes through the bloodstream and may collect along the walls of the arteries, potentially contributing to a hardening and narrowing of the arteries known as atherosclerosis. The complications of atherosclerosis depends on which arteries are affected, but they can include an assortment of diseases that affect the arteries and a greater risk for aneurysms and chronic kidney disease. Johns Hopkins Medicine notes that visceral fat is just as harmful for the heart as high blood pressure and smoking. So while efforts to reduce belly fat may initially be embraced to improve appearance, individuals should know that reducing fat in their midsections also can reduce their risk for a host of conditions, some of which are deadly.

Leaves cascading dow n from trees indicate the arrival of autumn. How ever, colorful and aw e-inspiring autumn leaves can be a hazard if left to lie on the ground too long. When visiting a grocery store without a shopping list, shoppers are bound to forget items, necessitating follow-up visits to the store, and waste time wondering what they need. Without schedules in an office environment, workers may allow time to idle away because there are no deadlines motivating them to complete projects.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

ppy Jumping puppy sing is embarassing his owner DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Every time someone comes to visit or says hello at the park, my puppy, Jake, jumps up and tries to lick their face. It’s embarrassing, and I don’t know how to stop it. Can you help? -- Sean in Providence, Rhode Island DEAR SEAN: Jumping up is a common problem for dog owners (for dogs, not so much; they love it). So much so that it’s one of the first things a trainer addresses with an owner. What you’ll need to do is to improve Jake’s overall response to commands as well as train him not to jump on people. Here’s how you do it, step by step: 1. Train the “sit,” “stay” and “come here” commands every day, at home and at the park. Teach him to walk on the leash calmly at your side. 2. Work with a companion who will ring the doorbell from outside, while you command Jake to sit after the bell sounds. 3. Put Jake on a leash. Answer the door to the companion; when Jake tries to jump up, tug the leash once and command him to sit. Remember to use positive reinforcement during training -- lots of praise, with a treat when he follows a command correctly. Avoid negative enforcement like scolding, yelling or hauling on the leash. Jake will not be perfectly behaved for some time; you should keep his leash attached at home when you expect visitors. If he gets overexcited when a visitor arrives and he won’t sit, take him to his crate or another room until he calms down. Even after he masters the training and is better behaved at home and on the leash, you’ll need to train him regularly so that he doesn’t slip back into his jumping-up habit.
