THE HISTORY OF HOLIDAY LIGHTS The tradition of Christmas lights stretches back to early modern Germany when people used candles to decorate Christmas trees in Christian homes. Those candles were harbingers of what would come when electric lights replaced gas and other open flame illuminating devices that were commonplace prior to the 20th century.

May EVERY DAY Here’s hoping your season is filled with all the delights, both big and small, that make Christmastime so special. We really appreciate everything this community has done to help us through the challenges of this past year so we can be here to celebrate the season with all of you.

MAKE THE HOLIDAY SEASON MORE ECO-FRIENDLY Get rid of your old holiday lights. Still using the same Christmas lights you used in 1995? Such lights are likely incandescent bulbs that are considerably less efficient than today’s LED Christmas lights. The Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy notes that LED lights consume 75 percent less energy and last 25 times longer than incandescent lighting. In addition, the OEERE says that LED holiday lights are easier to install and that as many as 25 strings of lights can be connected end-to-end without overloading a wall socket.

APPRECIATING FRUITCAKE: A much-maligned holiday staple Certain foods are synonymous with the holiday season. Thanksgiving turkey. Holiday cookies. Fruitcake. While those first two make mouths water. fruitcake rarely inspires stomachs to rumble in anticipation. But fruitcake is more than just something to go ignored on holiday serving tables. Fruitcake can be chewy, crunchy and wholesomely rich, making it something holiday hosts will be proud to serve to their holiday guests, who might just come away with a whole new appreciation for fruitcake.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles

AARP Survey: We Want to Grow Older at Home We want to stay home as we age. That much is clear from a recent survey by AARP. The 70-question survey touched on all types of topics about home and community preferences, with responses broken down by age. Here are some of the answers from seniors age 50 and older: 77% of us want to stay in our own homes as we age. 79% of us want to stay in our communities as we age. 33% of us know we will need modifications to our homes so we can stay in them and be safe as well as independent. The number of households headed by seniors in the next 20 years is going to rise from 34 million to 48 million. We’re going to want smart home devices and bathtub grab bars (and a full bath on the ground floor), as well as voice activated gadgets, wider doorways and easy access through the front door. We’ll also want accessory dwelling units (known as ADUs), such as in-law apartments or additions, so others can be nearby but not living with us. (AARP and Lowe’s have announced a collaboration to launch Lowe’s Livable Home, which will include services and products to help us create and build what we need so we can stay in our homes. See its website at www.lowes.com.) Safety also is on our minds, and over half of us would move to another area if it’s safer. Nearly half would move if it lowered our expenses. But we want a nice community, too, with bike trails and fast internet, ideally a small town where stores and services are nearby. If you want to see the survey questions and compare your own answers, go to www.aarp.org and search for 2021 AARP Home and Community Preferences Survey. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

Make a household favorite more healthy Many beloved dishes might be enjoyed more often if they were only a little healthier. Author and former personal chef Michelle Dudash was once asked by a client if the she could make a healthier version of chicken parmesan. The result of that request is the following recipe for “Skinny Chicken Parmesan with Spinach,” which Dudash ultimately included in her book, “Clean Eating For Busy Families” (Fair Winds). The recipe was a hit with Dudash’s client and will surely be a hit at home cooks’ dinner tables as well.

Skinny Chicken Parmesan with Spinach Makes 6 servings For the sauce: 2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil 2 cloves garlic, sliced 1 28-ounce can whole tomatoes 1/4 teaspoon dried basil 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano 2 pinches salt 2 pinches freshly ground black pepper 1/2 teaspoon honey

Vote and make your voice heard when you visit www.gvpennysaver.com!

For the chicken: 3 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese 2 tablespoons whole-wheat flour 1/2 teaspoon salt, divided 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/4 teaspoon dried basil 11/2 pounds chicken breast, cut into 6 pieces, pounded to 1/4 inch 2 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided 4 cups baby spinach 1 teaspoon lemon juice 3/4 cup fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced into 6 medallions (or shredded) 6 cups cooked whole-grain thin spaghetti tossed in 2 teaspoons olive oil

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * A high-school principal once disciplined a student by making him sit in the basement while reading the U.S. Constitution. The punishment must have taken effect, because said student (who also memorized parts of the document) was Thurgood Marshall, who grew up to become the first Black Supreme Court justice.

* Make your own gift wrap from everyday items like newspaper (think color comics) and children’s drawings, which can be glued together along the edges. For a really unique wrapping, try inexpensive fabric. * Cookies are so fun to make (and to eat). To save some of your favorites for the new year, simply place dough balls on a cookie sheet and freeze. Pop into a freezer-safe bag, and you can have freshly baked cookies pretty much anytime! -- JoAnn * “I have two carafes that I use for my breakfast bar. I keep coffee in one, and the other holds milk or cream. On holiday nights, I prep the cream carafe and put it in the fridge. In the morning, while the first pot of coffee is brewing, I fill the coffee carafe with hot water and let it sit until the coffee is ready. It keeps the coffee hot longer. Then guests can serve themselves some coffee while the next pot is brewing.” -- D.A. in Ohio * “Wine: Nobody I know is wasting it. But if you’re done before the bottle is, pour the leftover wine into ice-cube trays to save it. You can use it later in recipes or (my favorite) to chill a glass of wine!” -- E. in Florida * A can opener’s crevices can be cleaned by “opening” a length of waxed paper. Kitchen scissors can be sharpened by folding a piece of aluminum foil and cutting through it with the scissors.

Preheat oven to 375 F and coat the bottom of a 9 x 13-inch pan with olive oil spray. To make the sauce: Heat a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add oil and garlic and cook gently for 30 seconds. Do not brown. With your hand, squeeze each tomato into the pan and add basil, oregano, salt, pepper, and honey. Reduce to medium heat and simmer for 20 minutes, lowering the heat as needed. To make the chicken: Combine parmesan cheese, flour, salt, pepper, and basil in a medium dish and coach chicken with cheese mixture. Place a large skillet over medium heat and add 2 tablespoons of oil. When oil is shimmering, add chicken, rounded-side down, and cook until golden on one side, about 5 minutes. Arrange chicken in a baking pan. Pour remaining 2 teaspoons of oil into skillet and add spinach. Cook spinach for 1 to 2 minutes until wilted and swirl in lemon juice. Gently press spinach to release water and divide spinach on top of chicken. Spoon sauce around and over the chicken, place mozzarella on top, and sprinkle with 1/4 teaspoon salt. Bake for 15 minutes until chicken is cooked through. Serve over spaghetti. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Downtown Avon What a beautiful job the downtown Avon merchants have done decorating their storefront windows for the Christmas season! Cheers also to Assemblyman Marjory Byrnes as well. Nice job, everyone!

RPO Gala Holiday Pops So lucky are we to have the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra! The Gala Holiday Pops was sensational and such a panacea for this hectic time we’re going through. Jeff Tyzik led the ensemble through the hymns of the season, and performed some songs with his own personal arrangements that made them more memorable and fun. Another year off for the orchestral choir made up of high school students from our area, hopefully as Tyzik noted, they’ll be back next year. Jeff does such a nice job of introducing each song and many times along with a story. Such a nice addition to the wonderful music we heard! He also noted that the arts, and of course music, can lift our spirits and souls in our times of need. The Rochester Philharmonic continues to give us the gift of wonderfully performed music. Thanks RPO!

Christmas thanks Thanks so much to the Rushville Lions Club who delivered wonderful Christmas food boxes which included Ham & the trimmings for a lovely meal along with some cupboard staples and even a pretty Christmas pillow. Your generosity is greatly appreciated! Thank you and Merry Christmas!

Christmas lights Thank you to every single family throughout Livingston County and neighboring counties who adorned their homes and yards with Christmas lights and decorations. Whenever my family drives anywhere, my children enthusiastically look for these homes and enjoy them so much. You have brought so much joy to this season. Thank you!

Wanda’s is wonderful! Where can you go to eat where the owner comes around with a tray and passes out Christmas cookies and snacks to the diners? Wandas in Livonia! Many thanks to her for such a nice place to meet and eat! Thank you! To Polly Hanna who owns Rush Inter Pet, Inc. Pet Cemetery: Thank you for taking care of our animals. People should drive through it. It is open to everyone. It is better taken care of than most cemeteries. Thank you. - T.L.D. Adams Cobblestone Hall, featuring the Churchville-Chill School District’s singing group, Varsity Vocals, lead by conductor Mr. Erik Reinhart. The Riga community was treated to outstanding vocalizations of holiday favorites. The true essence of Christmas was captured by this wonderfull group of singers and their teacher. We have here one more example of the young people and staff of CCCSD that we are very proud of. Merry Christmas! - David T.

DID YOU KNOW ? Exercise is a great w ay to maintain a healthy mind and body. M any people begin a new year by making resolutions to lose w eight or build musc le. Too often, how ever, men and w omen get stuck in an exercise rut, follow ing the same exercise routine w eek after w eek. Not only can this be boring, fitness experts advise that it’s nec essary to c hange an exercise routine periodically to continue to see results. It’s one reason w hy many fitness clubs unveil new classes every few w eeks. Just w hen you master the choreography of a class, it’s time to change! W ith repetition, the body adapts and grow s accustomed to the routine, using less energy as a result. That can affect your ability to lose w eight. Changing your w orkout forces your body to w ork harder, producing better results. If you exercise w ith a trainer, discuss w ays to modify your normal routine to surprise your body. Inc reased intensity, interval training, adding sprints to running, taking different classes, or even increasing the frequency of your w orkouts may do the trick.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Blood-Pressure Goal: How Low Should It Go?

By Fifi Rodriguez 1. MOVIES: What is the name of the department store where Kris Kringle works in the 1947 “Miracle on 34th Street”?

---

DEAR DR. ROACH: My sister, 75, is taking only two drugs for the past three years, and they are both for high blood pressure. Now she finds that her blood pressure is 110/70 and wonders why she can’t take less of her medications as an experiment. For instance, if she cut her pills in half and still has her blood pressure under 120/80, would there be any problem with this? -- R.I. ANSWER: The optimum goal of blood pressure treatment is still not known; however, evidence is accumulating that it might be lower than the less than 140/less than 90 that is has typically been the target. At least in higher-risk people with high blood pressure, a large trial found that a goal blood pressure of less than 120/less than 90 had better outcomes than the traditional goal. A more recent follow-up study showed that risk of dementia was also lower in the group that had the lower blood pressure. Not everyone can tolerate a blood pressure that low: Side effects of medications can be problematic. But it’s reasonable to aim at 120/80 or less. In your sister’s case, she is a little bit below that. It wouldn’t be unreasonable if, after discussing with her doctor, she tried reducing the dose of one of the medications. If her blood pressure remains lower than 120/80, she could continue that lower dose. However, if she feels perfectly well on her current dose, there is not a reason to reduce the dose. In either case, don’t reduce the dose without a discussion, nor cut the pill in half without checking with the doctor or pharmacist. Some pills shouldn’t be cut in half.

2. LANGUAGE: What is the English equivalent of the Latin phrase, “Cui bono”?

Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus FRANCIS P. CHURCH (1839-1906)

no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

Dear Editor: I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, “If you see it in The Sun, it’s so.” Please tell me the truth; is there a Santa Claus? – Virginia O’Hanlon

V

irginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s, are little. In this great universe of ours, man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measuredby the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge. Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. No Santa Claus! Thank God, he lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood. – The New York Sun, September 21, 1897 Thanks Faith Trimble, for recommending this beautiful column.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Last year, pandemic lockdowns, job losses and financial instability caused many families, along with their pets, to experience food insecurity. Because groceries are a higher priority for families than pet food, many pets got less to eat or lived off table scraps, which can be unhealthy over the long term. In 2020, local shelters, businesses and other groups came together to collect donations of food or money to purchase food and supplies for pets. These were a great help. However, we’re not out of the woods yet. Rising prices due to inflation and supply chain issues, plus continued financial instability, means that many pets will go hungry again this year. Can Paw’s Corner readers rise to the occasion again this year and help neighbors and their pets to stay fed and healthy? -- Shelter Volunteer in Wichita, Kansas DEAR VOLUNTEER: You’ve done just that, and I thank you! This holiday season, I know my readers will make the effort to help pets through donations of food, supplies and cash. But maybe you’re a new pet owner or have never donated before. Maybe you don’t even have a pet right now, but want to help. There are so many choices out there. My advice is to pick just one way to help, because no contribution is too small. Pet food supplier Chewy has a great article on its website with ways to help: https://be.chewy.com/ pet-food-banks/ Local shelters often do community outreach to help feed pets so owners can keep their pets and not surrender them. Contact the nearest pet shelter, either by email or phone, and ask what type of donations they need. Your contribution will go directly to that shelter, so you’ll know the impact you’re making. Send your questions, comments or tips to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Research the job market. Look into the industries for the field you are considering. Is it the right time for success in this field? Industries tend to ebb and flow. Do not leave a job only to find the next career has few, if any, openings. Job growth projections are available through resources like the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

WORKING PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE Many working parents struggle to maintain a healthy balance between their responsibilities at work and their obligations to their families. An inability to maintain that healthy balance can have adverse effects on men and women’s careers as well as the relationships they have with their families. A 2015 survey of more than 2,000 adults commissioned by the workplace solution provider Workfront found that 38 percent of survey participants have missed life events because of a bad work-life balance. Access to technology that means work is never too far away might contribute to poor work-life balance, as 57 percent of respondents also acknowledged feeling that technology has ruined the definition of a family dinner. Finding a healthy balance between work and life at home may require a concerted effort on the part of working parents, but there are ways to successfully juggle a career and family.

Employees who care about their teams consistently meet their deadlines, making things easier for their fellow team members as a result.

Conservation methods can help save energy and preserve natural resources, but business owners may also be intrigued by the potential cost-savings of conservation. Utility costs vary depending on the size of a business, but the U.S. Small Business Administration notes that prospective business owners must estimate and include such costs when seeking loans to start their businesses. Estimated utility costs can be intimidating, especially for those owners who have never before owned their own businesses. Traditional conservation methods like recycling and reusing are great ways to conserve and save around the office, but business owners also can embrace some other ways to lower their office energy costs while benefitting the planet at the same time.
