The Power of Shopping Local: Building Stronger Communities BY SUZIE WELLS

I

n a world dominated by big-box retailers and online shopping giants, it’s easy to overlook the importance and impact of supporting local businesses. However, the benefits of shopping locally extend far beyond individual purchases, reaching into the very heart of our communities. There are so many reasons to choose local businesses to help build stronger, more resilient communities. Local businesses are the backbone of a community’s economy. When you shop locally, a more significant percentage of your money stays within the community, circulating through various local businesses and contributing to the area’s overall economic growth. Supporting local businesses helps create jobs and fosters entrepreneurship, as it provides opportunities for individuals to start and sustain their ventures.

Community Involvement Local business owners are more likely to be actively involved in community initiatives and events. They sponsor local sports teams, participate in fundraisers, and contribute to the community’s overall well-being. Resilience in Economic Downturns Communities with a strong base of local businesses tend to be more resilient during economic downturns. The interdependence of local businesses fosters a supportive network that can weather economic challenges more effectively than areas overly reliant on external corporations.

Shopping locally gives the gift that keeps giving, with: Personalized Service One of the standout features of local businesses is the personalized and attentive service they provide. Local shop owners often have a deep knowledge of their products and customers, allowing them to offer tailored recommendations and a more personalized shopping experience. Deb Paul says, “By spending your money locally, you may find yourself in a heartfelt conversation about your holiday plans and favorite seasonal recipes, as opposed to the more commercialized alternative... with incessant sales pitches and half-hearted, corporate-mandated greetings.” Fostering Social Connections

Unique and Handcrafted Products Local businesses frequently offer unique and handcrafted products not found in mainstream stores. Whether it’s handmade crafts, artisanal foods, or locally-designed clothing, these items add character and diversity to the community. Environmental Benefits Shopping locally often involves shorter transportation distances for goods, reducing the carbon footprint associated with shipping. This contributes to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly way of consuming goods.

Local businesses often serve as gathering spots where people meet, connect, and build a sense of community. Coffee shops, bookstores, and local markets become hubs for social interactions, contributing to a more connected and vibrant community. In a globalized world, the choices we make as consumers have far-reaching consequences. By choosing to shop locally, we not only stimulate economic growth but also contribute to the unique fabric of our communities. The power to build stronger, more resilient neighborhoods lies in our hands every time we make a purchase. Let’s embrace the vitality of local businesses and nurture the communities we call home.

Community Character Local businesses contribute to a community’s distinct character and charm. They often reflect the local culture and values, adding to the neighborhood’s overall identity. A thriving local business scene can attract visitors and enhance residents’ quality of life.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Prepare Your Home for a New Puppy DEAR PAW'S CORNER: This Christmas, we planned to get a puppy, but it is too young to leave its mother yet. Instead of revealing the puppy on Christmas Day, we wrapped a big box that had a little note in it from Santa saying that a new puppy will arrive soon, and to write down their ideas for a name on the back of the card. Do you have any tips on how we can prepare the house for the puppy's arrival in a few weeks? -- Chet in Boise, Idaho

Sterling is a 1 year old Shih Tzu and the cutest RIT Tiger. He has two “girlfriends” and loves his walks and playing with his favorite toy, Monkey.

DEAR CHET: First, kudos to you for handling the Christmas announcement so well! That's a great way to surprise the kids during the gift-opening while not having to supervise a puppy who has no idea what is going on. And keeping the puppy with its mother until it's at least 8 to 12 weeks old is so important. Involving the kids in preparation for the puppy's arrival is important. Explain to them that puppies like to explore -- often with their teeth. So they need to put away their toys, clothing and anything that they don't want to get chewed up. Puppies can also get into foods and cleaning items that can be dangerous or deadly for them, so those items need to be lifted off the floor or removed from the house's common areas entirely. Talk to them about how they can help train the new puppy. This will prepare them for how to handle, talk to and correct the puppy from the first day of its arrival. Here’s a Tip * Before you use your grater to grate cheese, give it a quick shot of nonstick spray. It will keep the cheese from gunking up in the grate. If you need softened butter for a recipe, you can grate it from frozen and it will soften up very quickly, but not melt like in a microwave. * Clean your cellphone screen often. This is especially important if you have a smartphone. We use our fingers nonstop to touch the phone, then put it directly up to our face. It’s a germ’s paradise. Just remember: A quick swipe with an alcohol cloth might save you from getting the flu this season. Stay healthy! * When heater season is in full effect -- like now -- I keep a spray bottle of water to which I add two tablespoons of liquid fabric softener. I spritz the house from time to time, and it will add humidity as well as a pleasant scent, but it also keeps my carpets from making my kids little zappers (from static buildup when dragging their feet!). -- M.A. in Ohio (c) 2023 King Features Synd., Inc.

MAKE THE YEAR AHEAD CLUTTER-FREE REAL ESTATE SECTION

Adopt an “out with the old, in with the new” mantra. Resolve to discard old items after purchasing new ones or receiving birthday or holiday gifts. Hanging on to old items because they can still function and serve some utility is a recipe for a cluttered home. Anytime you or a family member brings a new item into your home, make sure the item it’s replacing finds its way out the door.

Magic Maze ENDING IN “AGE”

FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE INVESTING IN REAL ESTATE Condition of the property: Product shortages were another trend to emerge during the pandemic, and disruptions to the supply chain will not necessarily go away anytime soon. In addition, the cost of various products associated with home improvements, including lumber, skyrocketed during the pandemic. The National Association of Home Builders noted that while lumber prices declined in 2021, the price of lumber packages quoted to builders remained high. That means real estate investors who invest in properties that will need work could be forced to pay a lot to fix these properties. And ongoing supply chain issues could extend the time it takes to renovate a property. Investors must be able to bear these costs and lag times to make the most off their real estate investments.

STATISTICS ABOUT MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

The National MS Society estimates women are two to three times more likely to develop the disease than men.

By Keith Roach, M.D.

Estrace Cream Is Safe to Use in Woman Who Had Melanoma ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 70-year-old woman who has been using Estrace vaginal cream weekly for several years. I am in excellent health, work out daily, run half-marathons and have my own business. I take 10 mg of atorvastatin daily. Ten years ago, I had melanoma removed from my arm. My concern is the use of Estrace. My gynecologist recommended that I use it after a Pap smear, but my primary care physician is not of the same mind. I would appreciate your opinion on this. My mother had breast cancer in her 80s, my sister had uterine cancer, and my brother passed away from bladder cancer. -- C.S. ANSWER: As far as the safety of using estradiol (Estrace), the bioidentical hormone to major natural estrogen, I am definitely of the same opinion as your gynecologist. When used topically, it works on the vulva and the lining of the vagina, keeping the tissue healthy. Without estrogen, the tissues that line the female perineum can become atrophic (thinned), predisposing a woman to discomfort, infections and incontinence. The Pap smear may have resulted in a finding that was suggestive of vaginal atrophy (increased neutrophils). Without treatment, the labia can even fuse together. With long-term use, the estrogen levels in the body are only slightly higher in women who use topical estrogen compared to those who do not, so the absorption into the body is minimal. The only case where I get concerned is with someone who has a personal history of an estrogen-sensitive tumor, such as endometrial cancer and some breast cancers. In those cases, I discuss options with both the patient and their oncologist. ***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. TAME STRESS AND IMPROVE HEALTH Stress can affect people of any age. While small amounts of stress may stimulate adrenaline responses and help people power through difficult projects or solve problems, chronic stress can impact the mind and body in harmful ways. WebMD defines stress as any change in the environment that requires the body to react and adjust in response. The body may react to stress physically, emotionally and/or mentally. Positive stress, called eustress, can take the form of getting a new job with greater responsibilities. However, it’s the bad stress - distress - that can cause tension and other negative consequences. Money, health and relationships are some of the common contributors to stress in the United States. Seventy-seven percent of Americans regularly experience physical symptoms caused by stress, and 73 percent experience psychological symptoms from stress. Statistics Canada indicated that, in 2014, the most recent year for which data is available, 23 percent of Canadians ages 15 and older (6.7 million people) reported that most days were “quite a bit” or “extremely” stressful. Stress can have many implications. When the body is stressed, muscles tense up and chronic stress can cause the muscles in the body to stay taut and tense for long periods of time, says the American Psychological Association. This may lead to tension headaches and musculoskeletal disorders. The Mayo Clinic advises that stress can cause fatigue, changes in sex drive, stomach upset, and difficulty sleeping. Stress also affects mood, potentially resulting in lack of motivation or focus, anxiety, sadness, and/ or angry outbursts. Healthline links chronic stress to behaviors such as overeating, not eating enough, alcohol or drug abuse, and social withdrawal. Reducing stress is a priority for many people. Although it is not an easy undertaking, slowly removing stressors from one’s life and taking steps toward changing one’s responses to stressful situations can help. There are many stress-management strategies, and not every one is right for all individuals. However, the following techniques may be helpful. • Exercise: Regular physical activity can help reduce stress. • Meditation: Mindful meditation, deep breathing, yoga, and tai chi are ways to focus the brain away from stressful situations. • Socialization: Talking and spending time with friends or family can relieve stress. • Hobbies: Crafts, hobbies and other engaging activities can direct attention away from stress. • Talk therapy: Seeing a therapist may help some people work through stress and discover additional techniques to change how they respond to stress. • Situation changes: Changing a job, residence or a condition that removes a source of stress may be handy. Many people suffer from stress, which can be very harmful if not dealt with healthily and readily. Page 14

Each year, roughly one million revelers gather at the intersection of Broadway and Seventh Avenue, so anyone planning to attend the celebration should aim to get there long before midnight if they want to see the famed ball drop.

For millenia, people around the world have commemorated the arrival of a new calendar year by adhering to various traditions. Once such tradition is making resolutions for the year ahead. Resolutions are promises to oneself geared around personal fulfillment and betterment. Resolutions are widely practiced, but some people may not understand the origins of New Year’s resolutions and why they have become the norm. Some historians tie the practice of making resolutions to the ancient Babylonians. More than 4,000 years ago, the Babylonians celebrated the New Year in March rather than January. The spring harvest was in March, and a festival called Akitu, which lasted 12 days, was celebrated. An important part of the festival was the crowning of a new king. Special rituals also affirmed a connection to the gods. The Babylonians made promises to the gods, which included vows to return borrowed objects and pay outstanding debts. Resolutions can also be traced to ancient Rome. The Romans were instrumental in creating a more formal calendar, and the start of the new year was moved from March to January (January and February were added to the Roman calendar under the rule of Numa Pompilius). Julius Caesar wanted to honor January’s namesake, Janus, the Roman god of beginnings. Janus’ two faces enabled him to look back into the past and forward into the future. Sacrifices to Janus were made, and worshipers exchanged gifts with one another. A custom of setting resolutions began during this period as well, with Romans promising to be good to one another. Eventually, these resolutions were funneled into prayers and fasting when Christianity was adopted by the Roman Empire. Other religious parallels include the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, which is a day of atonement and reflection as celebrants examine their wrongdoings and seek forgiveness and to behave better moving forward. Yom Kippur follows Rosh Hashanah, Judaism’s own new year. Resolutions also may be loosely tied to Medieval times. During this time, knights took a “peacock vow” at the end of the Christmas season. Each year, these knights would reaffirm their commitment to chivalry. Today New Year’s resolutions are largely a secular tradition, but they’re still connected to a desire to be a good person and put one’s best self forward.

Big thank you Thank you to the people who bought my dinner last Saturday night at a local restaurant. It’s a hard season for me since my husband and I were married Christmas Day. He passed from Agent Orange in 2011. It was so nice of them to treat me to dinner. I hope they have a very blessed Christmas and a prosperous New Year. Thank you again for being so thoughtful and generous to someone they didn’t know.

Courteous Drivers I’d like to give a shout out to the Henrietta drivers who show such courtesy and caution when cyclists are going through intersections or crossing the crosswalks. They wait until the cyclist is completely through the intersection or over the crosswalk before making their turns. Thank you for truly sharing the road.

Not Playgrounds Please let us remind you that senior apartment buildings are not playgrounds. You need to be more respectful of the elderly that live there. Take the children outside to play or to a playground where it's more suitable and safe for the tenants. Appointments I’m furious about, mostly medical offices, when they call to reschedule an appointment that you’ve been waiting months for. They want to reschedule for sometimes 2 to 3 months, if not more, out further. How about “bumping” others that haven’t been waiting so long. If it’s not your fault that the appointment is cancelled but it seems you’re the one that inconvenienced. You have no heart To all the people that dump their animals, you are the lowest. Do you even care that as you drive away, they are thinking what they did wrong? Take them to a shelter so they are warm and fed. How can you even sleep at night.

RELOCATING FOR A NEW JOB Rent your first home. The Allied survey found that 31 percent of respondents indicated the most challenging part of relocating for a job was finding a home, while 29 percent felt acclimating to their new community was the most challenging aspect of their relocation. Adults who rent their first homes upon relocating can remove some of the pressure to find the perfect home, knowing full well their first home in their new community will be temporary. If possible, rent in a location that makes it easy to immerse yourself in your new community, which should make the adjustment easier. In addition, place items that are unnecessary for day-to-day life in storage. Having some of your possessions already packed should make your next move less stressful.

HOW TO SUCCEED WITH YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION Expect setbacks. Just like it’s important to be patient, it’s equally important to recognize there will be setbacks. Men and women who resolve to save more money and have set specific monthly savings goals should not allow one monthly shortfall to derail all of their efforts. An unforeseen expense such as an automotive or home repair might compromise your ability to meet your monthly savings goal. Such setbacks are inevitable regardless of your resolution, so don’t be discouraged when they happen. Just commit to getting back on track in time to meet your next goal.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Jan. 2, 1981, the so-called Yorkshire Ripper, Peter Sutcliffe, is finally caught by British police. For five years, investigators had pursued the serial killer who terrorized Northern England. Sutcliffe had been interviewed nine times but always convinced detectives that he wasn’t involved.
