Shopping local means you get personalized service and

Good customer service can be hard to find at the big chain stores during the holidays due to retail employees often being stretched too thin in their work schedules. Some of the biggest perks of shopping local are the personalized customer service and the unique, hand-crafted items you come across.

GET CRAFTY WITH HOMEMADE ORNAMENTS

Handmade gifts, trinkets and treats help make the holiday season special. Although cookies and other baked goods are some of the most popular homemade creations this time of year, giftgivers young and old can put their talents to use with various craft projects. Ornaments and decorations are one such idea.

TRY A DIFFERENT TAKE ON TURKEY THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

Turkey is a holiday dinner staple in many families. While many might scoff at the idea of altering their holiday turkey traditions, others may embrace changing things up, feeling that the joy of cooking often lies in experimentation. Those unafraid to try something new might want to cook up a new recipe this year.

A much-maligned holiday staple Certain foods are synonymous with the holiday season. Thanksgiving turkey. Holiday cookies. Fruitcake. While those first two make mouths water. fruitcake rarely inspires stomachs to rumble in anticipation. But fruitcake is more than just somethingtogoignoredonholiday serving tables. Fruitcake can be chewy, crunchy and wholesomely rich, making it something holiday hosts will be proud to serve to their holiday guests, who might just come away with a whole new appreciation for fruitcake.

Decade-Long High Lymphocyte Count Isn’t a Cause for Concern

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a female and almost 75 years old. My vital signs are always normal, and I am active, but slightly overweight. I get quarterly blood draws, and every reading is in the normal range except for the lymphocytes. That count is higher, just outside the normal range (the lab’s range is 850 to 3,900 cells/uL, and my absolute lymphocytes are 4,377 cells/uL). This has occurred in the blood draws from the last two or three years, with the exception of one that was back in the normal range. About 12 years ago, after several abnormal results, I saw a hematologist, who reported nothing wrong after doing more extensive blood work. No reason could be given for it. I am concerned, but not obsessing over it. Is there any reason you can give for the slightly high lymphocyte count? -- S.M.

ANSWER: Lymphocytes are one of the two major types of white blood cells found in the blood (the other are the granulocytes, the most common of which are the neutrophils). High levels of lymphocytes raise suspicion for serious blood disorders such as some leukemias, lymphomas and related blood diseases, but there are other causes. Acute stress can do it, but you have been living with this for many years. Not having a spleen causes high levels of lymphocytes, whether you are born without one or have it surgically removed. Chronic infection is another reason.

I suspect your hematologist did a more sophisticated set of tests looking for blood disorders, and the fact that your level is the same after 12 years also supports my suspicion that this level is normal for you. Normal levels are generally defined as what is found in people without evidence of disease 95% of the time. So, by definition, 5% of normal people will have their result on any given lab fall outside of the normal range. Since yours is just outside of the normal range and, as I said, unchanged for years, I think you can relax your level of anxiety. Periodic blood tests do seem prudent, however, and further testing would be recommended in the event that the count starts getting higher or you develop any new symptoms.

PAW’S CORNER

A Handful of Dog Treats Help the Medicine Go Down

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have a tip for the owner who is struggling to give their dog eye medicine. Our dog had cataract removal surgery earlier this year, and we’ve had to give him drops ever since. We’ve got it down! All you need are high-value treats given before, during and a er the drops. Please feel free to share my suggestion. -Jenny H. Asheville, North Carolina

DEAR JENNY: Many thanks for the advice! Making “medicine time” less stressful and more positive is so important for pets. Folks, Jenny recommended a 100% meat dog treat, which is a great high-value snack. Look for a product like this in the pet store’s fresh food aisle. Peanut butter is another fave among dogs. One of my dogs is a huge fan of Doritos. (I have to hide them.)

Here’s some more tips for giving oral medication or drops to a dog or cat:

-- Work o some of your pet’s energy beforehand. Take the dog for a walk or have your cat play with a toy.

-- Make sure the pet is held safely. Place the cat on your lap and cradle your arm around their body, placing your hand on their chest. Have the dog sit or lie down at your feet (or in your lap), facing forward or to the side.

-- Stay calm and positive. Give your pet a small treat while being encouraging and petting them.

-- Give the medication as quickly as possible. Don’t force or rush the process, but gently open their mouth and pop the pill in as far back as possible, then rub the underside of their jaw and throat to encourage swallowing. If giving eyedrops, gently li one eyelid and put in the drop, then repeat on the other side.

How do you give your pet their medication? Let us know at ask@ pawscorner.com.

SENIOR NEWS

Workout Goals for 2023?

We love our new exercise coach. is is the young student who used us as guinea pigs for a college class project, graduated and has now been hired by the senior center as our permanent workout guru. It’s only been a month, and already we want to make him Employee of the Year.

Somehow he managed to convince the town to spend large dollars to out t a space in the rec center dedicated to workout equipment for seniors. But we haven’t just been turned loose with all that fancy new gear. Coach has required that we all have a personal session with him wherein he will instruct us on each machine and ll out our personal goal sheet with the weights and repetitions for each one. Periodically he will stalk through the room, instruct on posture, scrutinize someone’s goal sheet and ensure the machine’s weight is set correctly.

e bonus for us is that the cost per month is less than one-quarter the amount charged by the regular gyms in our area.

Is a gym workout in your plans for 2023? While you might not be lucky enough to have a personal coach and a brand-new dedicated-for-seniors exercise room at your rec center, you still might be able to join a gym near you.

Do you qualify for a low-cost SilverSneakers tness membership through your Medicare advantage or supplemental plan? Many plans have this bene t (standard Medicare does not), and over 17,000 gyms across the country participate.

If you nd a local gym (don’t forget about the YMCA), ask whether a tness expert will show you how each machine works and to generate an exercise plan for you. It’s o en included in the membership.

One bonus to signing up for a gym membership at this time of year is that gyms frequently o er discounts for the new year.

RESCUED TREASURES –

Giving Furry Friends the Gift of Love

The season of giving is upon us, and for many neglected and abandoned animals, there is no greater gi than that of a safe, loving home with a forever family. Local rescue shelters are exceeding capacity and rely heavily on community engagement to aid with supplying toys, food, and many other essen al supplies. Adop ng a pet from a local shelter is not only giving back to your community, but saving the life of an animal in need.

Rescued Treasures Pet Adop ons in Rochester is a network of over 100 fosters and volunteers. Their passion is rescuing abandoned and homeless pets. A non-profit, their caring, compassion, and desire to serve comes straight from the heart.

Avon na ve Jennifer Evere is a Rescued Treasures six-year rescue veteran. Using her wealth of knowledge, she educates fosters, prospec ve pet owners, and store volunteers. Balancing a fullme job and a busy schedule, Evere is available for guidance a er hours and on weekends.

Fierce dedica on like Evere ’s is not uncommon among Rescued Treasures volunteers who are driven to care for the well-being of our most vulnerable animal popula ons. Sadly, it’s a common mispercep on that shelter animals suffer behavioral problems. In reality, many of them were abandoned by pet owners who could no longer financially care for them, moved out of the area, or passed away.

One of the best ways to help is to foster. Rescued Treasures’ adoptable pets are at PetSmart via their loca ons in Greece and Baytown Plaza, Webster. The rescue has also opened its new Pawsi ve Cat Café on East Avenue in Rochester.

Evere con nues to support Rescued Treasures for a reason. “It’s clear they always want to do right by the animal,” she said. Like many, Evere feels rewarded by the drama c progress she has seen in shelter pets.

“One of my favorite ones was a li le black cat named Willow,” she recalled. “She had a li er, and she was fiercely protec ve of them. Although she didn’t seem to be feral, she wanted no part of anything with humans.”

Evere ’s solu on? Pa ence. “I just gave her me to come out of her shell,” she explained. “She was at my house for a year and three months. It took her that long to come out of any trauma. A wonderful couple adopted her. Her story is a testament.”

Fostering or adop ng a shelter pet means not only that you’ll save its life, but also the life of another animal that can then be taken in. Can’t adopt or foster? There are s ll many ways you can support your local animal shelter. Take a cue from our 12 Days of Christmas Pet Shelter Wishlist!

NOW HERE’S A TIP

* Use silicone caulk to make nonskid beads on the bottom of your pet dishes. They will stay in one place instead of getting scooted all around the kitchen.

* Need a quick iron job but don’t have the time to iron? Spray a clean kitchen towel with a mixture of water and a little fabric softener until damp. Pop it in the dryer with the item that’s wrinkled. It shouldn’t take more than 10 minutes to get all the wrinkles out and smell great to boot!

* While we’re on ironing tips, here’s a great one from T.C. in Alabama: “If you have mineral deposits on your iron, use a toothbrush and toothpaste (mild abrasive) to polish them off your iron’s face. Rinse with water, and next time, use distilled water for steaming.”

* “When driving a nail into a plaster wall, first put down a piece of tape at the spot where you will insert the nail. Tap the nail in right through the tape, then pull it away to discard. It often will keep the surrounding plaster from crumbling at the site of the nail.” -- W.L. in Oregon

* When your cabinet door magnet locks are too strong, try putting a piece of tape over the magnet. It decreases the strength of the magnet.

* If you paint your radiators, make sure that the paint you use is intended to be heat-resistant. To get the best finish, paint while the radiator is warm.

Shopping locally is a great way to benefit your community and, in many instances, your bottom line. When consumers shop locally, they help stimulate their local economies, creating jobs for their neighbors by helping local businesses grow and thrive. Shopping locally also saves shoppers long trips to the mall that can waste expensive fuel, especially if consumers don’t find what they’re looking for.

Shopping locally is especially important when the economy is struggling, as smaller businesses are not always as capable of bearing the brunt of a recession as larger ones.

DID YOU KNOW?

Exerciseisagreatwaytomaintain a healthy mind and body. Many people begin a new year by making resolutions to lose weight or build muscle. Too often, however, men and women get stuck in an exercise rut, following the same exercise routine week after week. Not only can this be boring, fitness experts advise that it’s necessary to change an exercise routine periodically to continue to see results. It’s one reason why many fitness clubs unveil new classes every few weeks. Just when you master the choreography of a class, it’s time to change! With repetition, the body adapts and grows accustomed to the routine, using less energy as a result. That can affect your ability to lose weight. Changing your workout forces your body to work harder, producing better results. If you exercise with a trainer, discuss ways to modify your normal routine to surprise your body. Increased intensity, interval training, adding sprints to running, taking different classes, or even increasing the frequency of your workoutsmaydothetrick.

Girl Scouts Rock!

A BIG shout out to the local Girl Scouts. I work at Temple Hill Cemetery and had worked a couple weeks blowing and lining up leaves. Then one day about 20 Scouts came by and did an amazing job of collecting leaves and hoisting them into the big town dump trucks. These ladies were like a swarm of bees! All business and nonstop high speed action. I was impressed and proud of our younger generation of women! Thank you for your service.

Shout Out for Dollar General in Retsof, NY

I ran in to Dollar General in Retsof on 11/19 to pick up a few items and had that dreaded "chip malfunction" on my credit card! I asked the clerk if she could cancel transaction so I could run to my car to see if I had cash. The guy behind me said, “Don't cancel, I don't mind waiting.” which was very nice! So I hurried out and returned very quickly to pay. The clerk handed me my bag and said “you’re good to go!” Of course I was amazed, it was the cashier who paid for my purchase, would not accept my money and said “Happy Holidays!” I was so surprised I didn't even say "I will pay it forward" to another unsuspecting person. Thank you for your generosity and making my day! #thebestdollargeneral

Thank you, Marc Mingoia!

Thanks to the great generosity of Marc Mingoia with the Howard Hanna Pittsford office. We all devoured this pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving specially delivered by Phillip Lane who actually delivered 2 of them in person to us for my grandson to have at his dinner. After a tough year and a half because of the loss of his dad, we appreciated the generosity. We were greatly surprised with the pies and we appreciate the goodness that still comes around in this world. The pies were deliciously made from Special Touch Bakery at 1999 Mt. Reed Boulevard. Making it even more special was it was my birthday! God bless everyone.

HOMETOWN PHOTOS

Cats

On a daily basis, I see responsible dog owners walk in our neighborhood. They keep their dogs on leashes. They clean after them. They license them. On a daily basis, I see cats, both feral and peoples’ pets, wander wherever they please. They are unlicensed. No one cleans up after them when they come into our yards to do their business. They are free to multiply unchecked. Why is it that cat owners do not have to follow the same rules as dog owners? Why do people continue to feed the feral cats? Wouldn’t it be better to take them into your homes? You could feed them, keep them warm, and have them spayed.

A Roof!

A roof! A pretty simple solution for the Bills stadium, especially as they plan for a new billion dollar arena that we will be partly paying for. The Bills/Browns game being moved to Detroit (Ford stadium complete with a roof.) robs Buffalo and Orchard Park of some significant revenue to boot. It’s certainly not too late to consider a roof for the Bills and for those fans who think real football is played in whatever Mother Nature throws at us, I’m sure given the choice, you’d rather be out of the elements and enjoy an NFL game that showcases talent on the field without weather distractions. And, as happy as we all are now that the Bills are in the conversation of elite status in professional football, there wouldn’t be as much pressure that they remain there if their fans could easily enjoy a football game inside.

Thanksgiving Heartbreak

To my neighbor who put a food pantry Thanksgiving food box into this morning’s trash, your wastefulness has broken my heart. I don’t know your circumstance, but I do know that there’s a Little Food Pantry just around the corner. That’s where I’ll be taking the 2 cans of green beans, 2 boxes of stuffing mix, 1 box of cornbread mix, 1 jar of apple sauce, 1 bottle of pancake syrup, 1 butternut squash, and 1 bag of potatoes, all unopened and untouched. You should be ashamed of yourself.

Chicory & Toby

Chicory is a golden doodle and Toby is a beagle corgi. Chicory is almost 3 years old and Toby just turned 1. Toby recently joined the family in January! We love to play and fight over toys. We drive mom and dad bonkers, but they love us with all their hearts. Chicory is the sassy older sister and Toby is that pesky little brother. We love each other and we’re inseparable. We love car rides, walks with mom, and playing with friends, family, neighbors and other dogs. We’re a handful!

DID YOU KNOW?

Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, andretirementagecanarrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.

STAY SAFE WHEN STRINGING HOLIDAY LIGHTS

Lighting displays are one of the many things that help make the holiday season a special time of year. Often awe-inspiring, holiday lighting displays present a perfect opportunity for communities and individuals to showcase their festive sides.

Safetyshouldalwaysbeaprioritywhenstringingholidaylightsbothinside and outside a home. The National Fire Protection Association notes that, between 2009 and 2014, fire departments in the United States responded to an average of 210 home fires that started with Christmas trees per year. Lighting displays strung on home exteriors also can pose safety risks if homeowners do not exercise caution. Following some simple safety procedures when decorating with lights can ensure everyone enjoys a safe and happy holiday season.
