‘tis the season Try something bold at brunch Popovers make a great addition to any brunch menu. Home cooks who want to get a little creative with their popovers can whip up a batch of “Popovers With Goat Cheese & Chile” from Linda Collister’s “Quick Breads” (Ryland, Peters & Small). Popovers With Goat Cheese & Chile Serves 4 to 6 1 cup milk (not fat-free) 1 cup unbleached all-purpose flour 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon wheat germ 3 extra-large eggs 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted 5 to 6 ounces goat cheese 1 medium-hot chile (or to taste), finely chopped 12-cup muffin tin, or flexible molds set on a baking sheet, well buttered - Preheat the oven to 425 F. - Put the milk, flour, salt, wheat germ, eggs, and melted butter in a food processor and run the machine until you get a smooth batter. - Cut the goat cheese into 12 fairly even pieces. - Pour the batter into the cups in the muffin tin so each cup is about half full. Add a piece of cheese to each and a little of the chopped chile. - Bake immediately for 25 minutes. Then, without opening the door, turn down the heat to 350 F and bake for an additional 15 minutes. Serve straight from the oven.

While the holidays are an inherently happy time, that joyful mood can be marred by the crooks who like to take advantage of people’s generosity, as well as their propensity to pay less attention to their surroundings as they do during less hectic times of year. Instances of certain crimes, particularly theft and identity theft, increase around the holiday season. Allstate Insurance advises that break-ins in residential areas may increase during the holiday season as well. That’s because thieves know that many homes are empty or cars are full of highpriced presents. Put the focus back on good cheer, delicious food, celebrations and gifting - protect yourself and your property this holiday season.

Thanksgiving Dinner Thanks I wish to praise the fantastic job the Dansville Rotary Club did with their Thanksgiving Dinner Program! I was a happy recipient of one of their delicious dinners, and it REALLY was delicious! My dinner arrived nicely HOT and was arranged beautifully. You really made my day! Thank you all, and I hope your Thanksgiving Day was as special as mine! ~ A senior citizen in Dansville Tribute to a Kind Neighbor Today Donna Cochrane from Honeoye came to pick up items for a Sunday school service project a mutual friend is leading, and mentioned that a fall earlier in the day landed the lady at urgent care with broken bones in her hand. Donna had already picked up our friend’s prescriptions and was likely on her way to provide dinner as well. This kindness reminded me of the many times Donna has recognized and quietly provided for people in the community. After a long career in the classroom, she is especially attuned to helping children in need - and I only know of the few I have helped her accomplish. She is a shining example of living the Golden Rule, and I am blessed to call her my friend.
Business Attitudes I tried to purchase a product locally and have it installed. The item was not in stock and it would take a couple weeks to have them order my particular item. I went online and ordered it, and it came in 3 days. Went to have it installed for just an installation fee and got an attitude for not purchasing it from them. Waiting a couple weeks or taking a substitute was not what I wanted. My suggestion is to call them first of your intentions; if you get an attitude, go elsewhere. No one cares about us We senior citizens are lonesome and left alone. Holidays are very depressing. Some of us are handicap in nursing homes. In today’s society, our kids, family, and supposed friends always say, “If you need us, call.” Well, this isn’t the case. Some of us need outside help: leaves to rake, a quick roof job... I could go on and on. All of today’s generations don’t care. The generations have to remember we raised them, put them through college, but they don’t think of all this. Why can’t you help us? Remember, we are still alive. Wake up, children, someday you will regret this and say “I wish Mom and Dad were here.” Too late. People in today’s society need to wake up and help each other like in the olden days. Where did the good old days go besides down the tube? - Sincerely, Senior Citizens

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Fatal Episodes of VFib Require an AICD Implant ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m an 88-year-old female who has been diagnosed with ventricular fibrillation (VFib). My cardiac electrophysiologist, who implanted a conventional pacemaker four years ago, has noticed several episodes of VFib (up to 30 seconds, read via a bedside monitor). They recommend replacing the current pacemaker with a combo pacemaker and defibrillator. I wonder about the history/success of this device. -- C.R. ANSWER: Most people have heard about atrial fibrillation (AFib), which is a common, chaotic electrical condition of the top chambers of the heart. Without regular electrical input from the atria to the ventricles, the ventricles beat irregularly, but blood flow from the heart still remains adequate. By contrast, VFib is a chaotic movement of the lower chambers, and the heart does not pump blood during VFib. Within a short time, 10 to 30 seconds at most, the brain will not have enough oxygen to keep you conscious. Unless VFib is rapidly treated or stops by itself (which is rare, but happened to you), VFib is fatal. A survivor of VFib definitely benefits from an automatic implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (AICD). Nowadays, they also have the ability to act as a pacemaker; they recognize and immediately provide a shock during episodes of VFib. AICDs first became available when I was in medical school during the 1980s, but current models are a huge improvement since they are smaller and last longer. The evidence is strong that people at a high risk for a “malignant” arrythmia like VFib live longer with an AICD than those who are only treated with anti-arrhythmic drugs. The rate of sudden cardiac death is reduced by about 50%. You are very lucky and should get this recommended device as soon as possible. They are common and effective. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2023 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

SPIRITUAL CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS Attend Mass Churches traditionally hold religious services on Christmas Eve and Christmas. These services are joyful expressions of faith, music and community spirit. But Christmas mass is not the only time to head to church. During Advent, the four-week period preceding Christmas, Catholics prepare and repent. Advent calendars help count down the days until Christmas. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * The ancient Romans used swan fat or donkey milk to soften wrinkles, while sores and freckles were treated with the ashes of snails. * Eskimos use refrigerators to stop their food from freezing. * Disney’s musical fantasy comedy “The Princess and the Frog” led to an unexpected salmonella outbreak in the United States. More than 50 children were hospitalized after the film’s release when they attempted to free handsome princes with a kiss from what turned out to be perfectly ordinary, definitely non-prince frogs. * Redheads produce more vitamin D than other hair colors. Christine and Clay Beeman Honor Their Son’s Memory with the Willie Bee Foundation BY SUZIE WELLS
T
he Willie Bee Foundation is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit charitable organization founded in 2017 to benefit local families with a child facing a life-threatening illness. The Willie Bee Foundation was founded in memory of Will Beeman, who lost his life at just under two years old after a courageous battle with AT/RT, an aggressive brain tumor. He fought for almost twenty months, enduring numerous surgeries, six rounds of high dose chemotherapy with stem cell recovery, and thirty proton beam radiation treatments. Will’s parents, Christine and Clay, were forever altered from the devastating experience. Christine, an English teacher at Churchville-Chili High School, says, “I became aware of a world I didn’t know existed before, and I watched my child show resilience, strength, courage, and happiness in the face of a devastating diagnosis.” Clay, an electrician at Billitier Electric adds that “As a father you want to provide for your family and keep your children safe. You are supposed to be the protector. To watch your child suffer and not be able to do anything to fix it forever changes you.” The Beemans and their friends and family created the Willie Bee Foundation to help support local families going through what they experienced. They explain, “Our love for Will is a love without end, and we miss him more than words could ever say. Throughout Will’s illness we experienced the difference that caring, compassionate, and empathetic individuals can make in a family’s life when they are facing the unthinkable.” Tricia Saltzberg, Will’s aunt and Christine’s sister, secretary of the Willie Bee Foundation, says, “Will has inspired so much generosity within friends and family,” and she hopes to honor him as she and the foundation “help channel the unending grief to continuous love.” The Foundation’s Creative Director, Chelsea Carl, says she will “always carry Willie Bee with [her] and remind the world to bee strong, bee kind, and bee courageous.” The Foundation’s mission is to make a difference one family at a time. By helping families with monetary, medical, and social support services they may not otherwise have access to, “We can show them that WE care and that they are not alone.” Clay explains, “This foundation [allows] Will to not be forgotten and for something positive to come out of a heartbreaking and devastating situation. We are so grateful for all the support we received on this long journey and hope to make a difference in other families’ lives in Will’s memory.”
GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111
The Willie Bee Foundation helps ease family burdens and helps the families create cherished moments. They listen carefully to families’ needs and offer tailored support, such as gifting iPad packages for children and their siblings during extended hospital stays, comfort care packages for caregivers, or end-of-life comfort care items. Willie Bee collaborates with Splatters Studio in Spencerport to gift families keepsakes. The foundation may arrange wheelchair-accessible van rentals, may cover travel costs for out-of-area treatments, and may grant families “mini-wishes.” They may coordinate winter plowing, summer lawn care, or house cleaning services so the families have one less thing to worry about. Catered meals throughout the year, holiday gifts and meals, and memberships to zoos, museums, and amusement parks bring joy during families’ difficult times. The Willie Bee Foundation may send families on special trips or to summer cottage rentals to provide treasured family time. Gift cards for groceries and restaurants ease family stress. The Beemans and the Willie Bee Foundation say, “It is our sincere honor and privilege to provide what we do for families. Every single child, sibling, and family we meet holds a special place in our hearts. We consider everything we do to be gifts Will is giving us.”

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Should an owner punish puppy after accident?
Princess is a 16 year old maltese, she and her Christmas pal are watching for elves and Santa.
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I bought a puppy a few weeks ago who was between 2 to 3 months old. Star is wonderful, and housetraining has been OK. But yesterday, he pooed in the hallway while we were out. My boyfriend says I need to push his nose into the mess and punish him. I don’t think that’s the right way to train a puppy. What do you think? -- Daria in St. Louis, Missouri DEAR DARIA: Your instinct is spot on, and you should trust it more. That’s the wrong way to train a puppy. It’s aggressive, negative and doesn’t teach the puppy anything -- except to be afraid. Young puppies are learning machines, picking up habits quickly -- both good and bad. They need to be constantly supervised to keep them safe and to correct them (not punish them) on the spot so they learn what they can and can’t do in the household. When they’re not supervised, I recommend placing them in a properly sized kennel crate. Think of it as a den for your puppy, a safe spot. Again, not a place to punish him. Furthermore, puppies need to pee and poo more frequently than adult dogs -- about four times daily at Star’s age, but sometimes more. It’s up to you to make sure their elimination schedule is adequate and that you are there to supervise them. Star couldn’t wait for you to get home, so he went in the hallway. That’s on you, not on Star. Clean up the mess (spray with an odor eliminator) and continue your training schedu

Here’s a Tip Zip-top bags are essential when our family packs for holiday visiting. We use gallon-size bags for the kids’ outfits -- top, bottoms, underclothes, etc. -- and each bag holds one complete set. There is no suitcase chaos, as the bag comes out, and yesterday’s clothing goes in, ready for laundry day when we get home. Happy traveling. -- JoAnn After Christmas sales are a great time to buy not only gift wrap (look for solid colors that you can use all year long), holiday cards and decoration, but also next season’s winter wear. Things like scarves and gloves can be great bargains. And even coats can go on sale. Take advantage -- especially if you have kids -- and buy up. A great storage container for fancy ornaments is a liquor box, which you can get for free outside of package stores. They have cardboard separators that make it easy to store glass bulbs. -- W.F. in New Mexico (c) 2023 King Features Synd., Inc.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * The blue whale is earth’s largest living creature, surpassing even most dinosaurs. Not only can it reach over 100 feet in length and weigh more than 100 tons, but its heart can tip the scale at 1,300 pounds and is the size of a small car, while its arteries are big enough for a full-grown human to swim through -- not that we recommend you go for a swim and attempt it. * In 2007, Iran claimed 14 squirrels found near the nation’s borders were actually spies. * The record for most times being hit by a baseball pitch -- a whopping 287 -- belongs to Hughie Jennings, who finally got smart and retired in 1918. DOS AND DON’TS OF HOLIDAY SAFETY DON’T underestimate the things that can and will go wrong when hosting for the holidays. Take a deep breath, assess the situation and stay calm through any hiccups.
[T]hat old September feeling... of summer passing, vacation nearly done, obligations gathering, books and football in the air.... Another fall, another turned page: there was something of jubilee in that annual autumnal beginning, as if last year’s mistakes and failures had been wiped clean by summer. ~Wallace Stegner
HOBBIES FOR DIFFERENT PERSONALITY TYPES Men and women who have experienced great success in the world of business can pursue a host of low-stress opportunities with a goal of sharing their experiences with the next generation of business leaders. Teaching a course at a local college or university is one such avenue, and executives can even offer to work with high school students interested in pursuing careers in business. Teaching and mentoring might be less traditional hobbies than crocheting or woodworking, but they still provide a way for adults to pursue their passions away from the constraints of the office.

a festive table on a dime
YOU
C AN
DO
IT!
Presentation is king when it comes to setting a memorable holiday table, and it needn’t be daunting or expensive. Here are some essential tips that will garner rave reviews at your next gathering.
Mercury Glass It’s everywhere these days. From trees, to pumpkins, to candlestick holders, it’s timeless and transitions well from season to season.
Mix and Match Don’t be afraid to mix metallics. This gold flatware, purchased second-hand, is a standout.
Add Interest with Height A mix of faux and metallic pine trees give your table the height it needs. Be sure to place them strategically so your guests can easily see one another.
Start by scouring the house to see what you can mix and match to bring your table to life. Don’t be afraid to ask parents or grandparents for family heirlooms that they may be willing to part with. One of the best investments you can make is solid white porcelain dishes. You can get them for a steal at most places and they’ll take you through every season. For a fun twist, layer them with whimsical holiday plates. Solid red napkins add a pop of color, and when placed under the plates, there’s no need for a runner or placemat.
Be Resourceful Think outside the box. These heavy metal pinecones are confiscated from an old cuckoo clock. Add some freshly clipped greens and you’re good to go.
Wooden reindeer, real pinecones and mixed greenery take the textural feel to the next level. Snips of spruce or boxwood trees from the yard up the texture, and best of all are free. Details make all the difference. Adding personal placecards is a great touch that makes everyone feel special. How about adding a surprise lottery ticket to the bottom of a random plate? Sometimes a winner, and always a hit!

Where to splurge This dining room table is a restored farmhouse table. It seats 22 people when all leaves are in. If you’re going to go all out, do it here and know that it will be enjoyed for generations to come.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Between 1970 and 1973, four Israeli fighter pilots held as POWs in an Egyptian prison passed their time by translating J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit” from English into Hebrew. The book was sent to them by their family members via the Red Cross. The pilots’ version was published commercially in 1977 and is still considered by many to be one of the best Hebrew translations available. EMPLOYMENT ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

HOW WOMEN CAN KEEP THEIR CAREERS GOING FORWARD Define career expectations. Defining career expectations early on can be beneficial in various ways. Such expectations can guide career choices and provide a road map that women can utilize to stay the professional course. This can help women make decisions about their careers when they come to forks in the road. For example, if a path to promotion seems blocked, women can examine their established career expectations to help them decide if it’s time to seek new employment. Defining career expectations also can help women effectively communicate with mentors about their goals, and mentors can then use that information when offering guidance. Expectations need not be concrete, and it’s likely they will change over time. But they can serve as an important foundation for anyone from young female professionals to experienced executives looking to make changes or determine the next step in their careers.
