Statins Do Not Increase Risk of Death by Suicide in Men Over 60

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have read that there is a correlation between the use of statins and suicide in men over 60, especially if they have suffered from chronic depression. Can you tell me if this has been studied more? -- K.M.

ANSWER: This concern has been studied extensively. An older class of cholesterol medication, the fibrates, was associated with a small increased risk of suicide and violent deaths, in several large studies. However, a very large study published in 2020 showed no increase in risk of death by suicide among those taking statin drugs. In fact, that study, as well as several others, have shown a decrease in depression risk among statin users. Statins have even been found to be (modestly) effective in treatment of drug-resistant depression.

Men over 60 are certainly at a higher risk from death by suicide, but statin drugs do not appear to increase that risk. Anyone with thoughts of hurting themselves should seek care from their doctor, a mental health professional, or the suicide and crisis lifeline at 988 in the U.S. and 833-456-4566 in most Canadian provinces. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 74. I have always been described as small-boned. I am on a statin, but otherwise, I’m healthy. I was recently diagnosed with osteopenia. I do not eat dairy, but I do take vitamin D. I am vegetarian and eat lots of tofu. I am very concerned about taking any additional medicines. Suggestions, please? -- F.M.D.

ANSWER: Osteopenia, or low bone density, is analogous to borderline diabetes or elevated blood pressure. It’s not a disease in itself, but it puts you in a range between the healthiest condition and one that can put you at risk. In the case of osteopenia, you are at a higher risk for developing osteoporosis, which, in turn, puts you at a high risk for a fracture, especially one of the spine or the hip. We do not normally treat low bone density with medicine. Lifestyle interventions to help slow loss of bone density include not only the calcium and vitamin D you are taking, but I especially recommend exercise. Weight-bearing, musclestrengthening and posture exercises are proven to help. Smokers should quit.

You should have gotten a T-score on your report, which compares your bone density for a given bone to a healthy young adult. The worse the T-score, the closer you are to osteoporosis, which is a T score below -2.5. Depending on how close you are to osteoporosis, the sooner your bone density test should be repeated. People with osteoporosis should be considered for medication. I understand your concern about taking more medicine than you need, but you really don’t want a hip fracture to occur.

STRUGGLING WITH ADDICTION?

TIPS ON FINDING QUALITY TREATMENT (NAPSI)—It can be overwhelming and confusing to know where to start if you need to find treatment for an alcohol or drug addiction. Addiction touches nearly everyone in some way, yet there is no one-size-fits all approach to effective treatment. With many addiction treatment options, finding a program that will provide the quality care you or your loved one needs to address their specific addiction issues can be challenging. These steps will help you know what to look for to find a treatment program that is high quality and tailored to your needs.

How Do You Find A Treatment Provider?

If you have insurance, a good first step is to contact your insurer. Ask about your coverage and whether they have a network of preferred providers. If you don’t have insurance, you still have access to quality care. Each state has funding to provide treatment for people without insurance coverage. Find out where to call for information about payment for services at: https://bit.ly/2Am4htd.

What Should You Look For In A Program Or Provider?

Quality treatment programs offer a full range of services accepted as effective in treatment and recovery from addiction. Keep these points in mind when weighing your options.

1. Accreditation: Make sure the treatment program is licensed or certified by the state. This ensures the provider meets basic quality and safety requirements. You should also check that the program is accredited, which means it meets standards of care set by a national, compliance organization. Be sure to ask the program to show you how people using their services have rated them.

2. Evidence-Based Treatment: Check to determine if the program offers effective and proven substance use disorder treatments, such as medication management, cognitive behavioral therapy, drug and alcohol counseling, education about the risks of drug and alcohol use, and peer support. Quality treatment providers or programs offer more than one form of effective treatment. Effective programs will also be mindful of or address mental health and physical disorders that will affect substance use treatment.

3. Medication: Confirm whether the program offers FDA approved medication for recovery from alcohol and opioid use disorders. However, keep in mind that currently, there are no FDA approved medications to help prevent relapse from other problem substances.

4. Families: Family members have an important role in understanding the impact of addiction on families and providing support. Make sure the treatment program includes family members in the treatment process.

5. Continuing Care: For many people addiction requires ongoing medication and supports. Quality programs provide treatment for the long term, which may include ongoing counseling or recovery coaching and support, and helps in meeting other basic needs like sober housing, employment supports, and continued family involvement.

Once you’ve identified a treatment program that meets the criteria above, call for an appointment. Many programs provide walk-in services. If they can’t see you or a family member within 48 hours, find another provider. (It is important that the provider or program connect you to care quickly). You can find more information about finding addiction treatment by visiting: https://findtreatment.samhsa.gov/ or calling the National Helpline at (800) 662-HELP (4357).

Gas Station Thanks

Thank you so very much for the young man and his daughter who paid for my gas on Thursday, February 3rd in Bloomfield. My sister and I started out to meet another sister for coffee when I realized my car was on empty. I stopped at the next gas station but was having difficulty getting my credit card to register when this gentleman put gas in my tank from his host. A very large amount of gas! Can you imagine such thoughtfulness! And I didn’t even get his name. Thank you again and bless your kindness.

Thank You Naples!

I was pleasantly surprised to find beautiful Valentines posted all along Main St. in Naples. Thank you to the organizations, businesses and individuals responsible. Made my day! Happy Valentine's Day!

Rural Road Rager

Last week I was sitting at the stop sign at the bottom of our rural and partial seasonal road, waiting for you, an oncoming car, to pass by before entering the County Rd. You decided to put on your blinker at the last minute, pull in front of me, stop, and roll down your window. You then proceeded to yell, claiming I am in your lane (not true) and ask "what am I doing?"! I said "I am turning" and sweetly said goodbye and drove off. This enraged you as you shouted expletives and laid on your horn. I thought you would come after me next, but didn't. Wow, what an angry and aggressive young man you are, triggered by something that was so nothing!

Mind My Own Business?

According to the CDC, obesity costs the Healthcare System $173 billion dollars each year. A cost we all pay in the form of higher insurance premiums. So your daily garbage plate is taking money out of my pocket. I'd say that makes it my business.

To The Anti Dog Woman

To the woman who lives on my street and hates dogs, STOP harassing me every time I simply walk by your house with my dogs. They’re NOT going to the bathroom in your yard. We are allowed to utilize the PUBLIC sidewalk. If you don’t stop I will call the police on you just like you do to everyone else on the street. Get a taste of your own medicine.

Thanks

I would like to thank all the folks who stopped and made sure I was alright on Friday morning when my Ford truck went off the road and into a ditch on Rt. 46 just before Rt. 21. I was pinned in the truck in the ditch. AAA got there three hours after it happened. I want to thank ALL who stopped to make sure I was ok. Kudos to the state trooper who also stopped.

Are ere Recalled Foods in Your Freezer?

How many food items in your freezer, refrigerator or kitchen cabinet are on recall lists?

I spotted a food recall alert on the news, but I only heard part of the announcement. On to the internet I went, looking for the information. And sure enough, for the rst time ever, I actually had a recalled food item. It was a bit unnerving to realize that I hadn’t been reading all the recall alerts I get in my email inbox.

While looking for more sites that provide alerts, I came across one I hadn’t known about: FoodManufacturing.com. Just in the past few weeks, they’ve put out alerts for a certain soup because of an error on the label, several brands of Vienna sausages, hot chocolate K-cups (it might contain peanut products), a pot roast meal, sprouts, frozen chicken entrees, popcorn, frozen manicotti, diced beef ... and more.

To look at their list, go to the site and click on the “Recalls/Alerts” tab. e Food Safety and Inspection Service arm of the Department of Agriculture issues alerts as well at www.fsis.usda.gov/recalls. Note the advanced search feature on the le side of the screen where you can lter by cause, risk level, states and more.

Food Safety (www.foodsafety.gov) provides information on the safe handling and storage of food.

Recalls.gov is another good site for recall notices. Click on the “Food” tab to see your online choices.

And what should I do with that recalled product I found in my freezer? I’m going to take it back to the store for a refund, of course.

On a sad note, did you see the Consumer Reports research on the amount of lead and cadmium in our favorite dark chocolate bars? Go to ConsumerReports.org and put “Lead and Cadmium Could Be in Your Dark Chocolate” in the search box.

STRANGE BUT TRUE

* Rose DeWitt Bukater’s fabulously expensive pendant, “The Heart of the Ocean,” featured in James Cameron’s “Titanic,” was not completely fictitious -- it is believed that a rather large sapphire went down with the ship that fateful night.

* There is a company called Little Miss Matched that sells packs of mismatched socks.

* Syphilis was a major problem in the late 19th and early 20th century. Doctors found that the bacteria that caused it was sensitive to heat, so they thought giving a patient a fever could help get rid of it. How did they induce said fever? With malaria injections! While effective in curing syphilis, some patients unfortunately died from -- you guessed it -- malaria.

* Before mercury, brandy was used to fill thermometers.

Don’t overlook deals on automobiles. Certain holidays, such as Presidents’ Day, provide opportunities for consumers to find great deals on new vehicles. Scout out the deals being offered on the car or truck you want.

NOW HERE’S A TIP

* “It can be tricky to add new keys to a key ring, especially if you don’t have much of a fingernail. I have found a foolproof way to get the key started. Just use a staple remover. It works wonders!” -- T.R. in Indiana

* If you find that you have small scratches in your wood furniture, try this old trick: Rub a walnut over dings to cover them up. Or find a matching brown crayon, rub it lightly into the scratch, and finish with a hair dryer held 10 inches away for about 10-15 seconds. It melts the wax of the crayon, and then you can buff it with a soft rag. Any excess is swept away and the color remains.

* Got small kids? If your little one keeps rolling out of his bed, here’s a tip: Use a pool noodle tucked under the fitted sheet, lengthwise along the edge of the bed. It’s just enough of a bumper to send a sleeping child back to the center of the mattress.

* “If you have many mismatched frames that you would like to use, you can try spray painting them all the same color. I had several that were different colors and a little bit beat up, but I wanted to use them in one big group. I painted them all glossy black, and they look great!”

* Hanging shoe racks are a wonderful organizational tool, especially the ones made of plastic that have see-through pockets. You can use them on the back of your bathroom door for small towels and toiletries, or how about on the back of baby’s door as a diaper organizer?

My favorite use is on the back of my garage door to hold all the cleaning bottles and solutions with other supplies. They are nice and high, and out of reach of little hands.

The Night I Slayed My Enemy in a Church Parking Lot then Learned to Live by The LORI Factor

o without me. Suicide is on the rise. Too many people feel lost, lonely, and hopeless, and su er in silence as I did.

I found it imperative to reinvent myself and reclaim my life. I have learned to heal from the pain and not bury it. I have learned to forgive myself and the people who have hurt me. I know how to love and value myself now. I realize that life is God’s gi to us, and how we live our lives is our gi to God. at Lori who was drunk under a truck in a church parking lot is gone.

I embarked on a journey of rebirth, discovering and developing myself to become the best version of myself. is transformation resulted in extraordinary gi s emerging through faith, awareness, and belief. No longer was I under the dark spell that had me sleepwalking through life.

I ran from religion and rituals into the arms of God. When I let go of God, it led to destruction. My relationship with Him and seeing myself as God sees me restored my mind, body, and soul and restored my health.

sidewalk in a rage until I came to a liquor store. How can I numb this intense pain? Forcing a smile and hiding my tears, I purchased a big bottle of liquor.

ere was a cold chill inside my mind and body. Brown bag in hand, I walked back to my car oblivious of my surroundings. Sitting in the driver’s seat, I unscrewed the bottle and let the alcohol pour into me, hoping to numb the pain. e enemy consumed me and took control. I was going nowhere in my parked car. e only thing driving now was the alcohol as I stumbled out of my car and fell onto the stones. I crawled until I passed out drunk under a truck in that church parking lot.

Prior to that night, I believed I would bring love and hope to others when I signed up for the ministry training class at that church. Instead, darkness fell upon me and opened doors from my past that I thought were closed. Each week, the instructor covered topics including death, divorce, abusive relationships, alcohol abuse, addictions, domestic violence, and more.

What happened to me that night in the parking lot was the culmination of what the instructor said and the years of hurt buried inside me. My own experiences were triggered, including my parent’s divorce and witnessing domestic violence. I looked out the tiny basement window and saw a rainstorm brewing. I was about to encounter the storm brewing in my mind, which was much worse. I had a beautiful loving home with a good husband and two wonderful sons. I loved my family. I was living the life I wanted. Unexpectedly, the darkness of my past crept in and devoured my happy home.

My father le our home when I was about thirteen and that was one of the hardest things to accept. I made poor decisions, looking for love in all the wrong places.

One night during class, the instructor asked me to leave instead of showing compassion. e weight and humiliation of banishment broke me into a million pieces.

e hurt was so intense. at is how I ended up a broken, intoxicated mess passed out drunk under his truck in the church parking lot that ominous night.

e shame ate me up, and engaging in toxic relationships became my norm. I attempted to end my life. I thought everyone would be better

is transformation lled me with hope. at’s when people began to call me the Queen of Hope. What I do now is celebrate myself, my wins, and stay thankful. Laughter, fun, and travel are essential for mental and physical health.

I love this quote by Les Brown: “When life knocks you down, try to land on your back. Because if you can look up, you can get up.” I got up and am living life by what I call e LORI Factor.

L – LOOK through the Lord’s loving eyes to see a larger vision of your life and create a vision of yourself beyond your circumstances and mental conditioning.

O – OPTIMISM: Have an optimistic spirit and retain the possibility that you can change your life.

R – REINVENT yourself. Be willing to make radical changes in your behavior to live a purposeful life.

I – INVEST in yourself. Bet on you. You’re an asset to the planet. You have something special. You have greatness in you. You’re a masterpiece because you are a piece of the Master.

I wrote a book about it. Beyond that, I enjoy showing others how to live the life they were born to live. My hope is that my story empowers others and saves lives.

DESIGN

WITH

HEALTH AND ERGONOMICS

IN MIND

(NAPSI)—Whether you’re among the 50 million Americans over 65 (90 percent of whom hope to continue to age at home), the 60 percent of families with children at home, have other ability issues or safety concerns or think you could someday, incorporating ergonomic elements that promote a seamless experience in the kitchen can make it a more comfortable place for everyone for many years to come.

Smart Sinks Given the amount of time spent in front of the sink, selecting one that considers your lifestyle and how you cook should be a priority. Details such as the durability and hygienic qualities of a sink’s material along with its style and size can impact efficiency and comfort.

For example, the latest sink from BLANCO, a manufacturer of finely crafted sinks, is designed to enhance workflow and accommodate all users. A first of its kind, the IKON® 33” Apron 1 3/4 Bowl with Low Divide sink is made with the brand’s exclusive SILGRANIT granite composite material. Easy to clean and scratch resistant, patented SILGRANIT material is a repellent, nonporous surface that eliminates the need to use harsh chemicals when cleaning.

The IKON sink also has a convenient low divide that sits just 5 1/2” from the sink bottom, making it easier to handle large pots and baking sheets while still dividing the sink into cleaning and prepping bowls. The apron front or farmhouse design, minimizes the need to lean over as much and so helps reduce strain.

Optional accessories further enhance comfort and workflow. A floating grid provides an extra level within the sink so handling hot and heavy pots can be safer and easier. A Floating Cutting Board that fits right on top of the sink instantly creates another workspace beyond the countertop.

Faucets Semi-professional and pull-down faucet models help make clean-up more efficient with their easy-to-maneuver design and powerful dual spray features. To make washing hands, food and dishes easier, consider a faucet with sensor technology such as the BLANCO SOLENTA™ Senso Semi-Professional Kitchen Faucet that lets you turn on the water with a wave of your hand. You don’t have to touch the faucet with your hands to get them clean—or if they’re full. Other ways to enhance the ergonomics in your kitchen include:

• Use drawers instead of cabinets for storage so there’s less reaching

• Install different countertop heights to accommodate various users

• Raise the height of the dishwasher and oven if you can

• Select nonporous counter materials like quartz that are easy to keep clean

• Use LED lights for more brightness from less energy and that are cool to the touch

• Consider an easy-to-clean induction cooking surface—it can reduce energy costs, too Learn More: For further facts about sinks and faucets that can make your kitchen safer, more efficient and even better looking, visit blancoamerica.com.

Exercising outdoors in winter can be exhilarating, but athletes must prioritize staying warm and safe for the duration of their workouts.

PAW’S CORNER

Should I Buy a Pet on an Online Marketplace?

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I was scrolling through my social media account and an ad popped up showing a really cute puppy for sale. What are people’s experiences buying pets online? -- Curtis, via email

DEAR CURTIS: e short answer is, don’t. It’s unlikely that what you saw was an approved ad, because most social media companies do not allow pet sales or advertising for the sale of pets. Probably, someone created a post and made it public.

Avoid responding to the post, even if you think you know the person who posted it or think you know the location. Chances are it’s either a scam to part you from your hardearned money, or you will receive a puppy that is not the one advertised or is very ill and needs a lot of medical care. I’ve heard too many stories from owners who got scammed from such online transactions.

If you just want a cute animal companion, adopt a pet through your local shelter. You’ll be able to see and interact with a potential pet, and the shelter will help you evaluate whether you’re ready for a dog at this point. ere is a cost involved with adoption, but those fees are upfront. And I guarantee it is substantially less than what you will pay a shady pet dealer (or pay out in medical bills later on).

If you absolutely want a speci c breed of dog, do the homework required. Find nearby breeders who specialize in the breed you’re interested in. Read up on the breed. Find out the nancial requirements to match with, purchase, train and care for that dog.

No matter which path you pick, know that pets are an investment of money and time. e dividend is a healthy, happy pet that adores you. Don’t take a shortcut.

Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com.

Maintain tire balance and alignment for a smooth ride

Balancing tires involves equalizing the weight of the combined tire and wheel assembly so that each tire spins smoothly on the road. Tires are mounted on the wheel assembly, and the chances of this assembly having precise weight distribution is nearly impossible without a little help. According to Discount Tire, the slightest imbalance in the tires, even as little as half an ounce, can be felt by drivers. Unequal mass can make tires wobble, causing noticeable vibrations.

Mechanics will test tire balance by putting it on a balancing machine. The machine will spin the tire and determine the tire’s heaviest point. Counteracting weights will be placed on the tire hubs to create a more uniform balance of weight. Lead weights are often used, but some are being phased out for other metals, such as zinc, because of the medical and environmental implications of lead.

Tires that are not balanced will not only cause vibration, they also can lead to uneven wear.

STEPS INVOLVED WITH ESTATE PLANNING

Medical directives. In addition to a will, estate planning includes your wishes if you become incapacitated or suffer from a serious medical condition that precludes you from making decisions about your care and finances. Spouses can be named to make important health decisions, but you may want to indicate other information, such as life support measures or organ donation, as well. If you have strong opinions on treatment, medical directives and living wills are a necessity.
