Hi! My name is
Don’t Forget to Provide for Pets in Your Will
Smores. I am two years old. I love to hunt, disobey my family, and get a lot of attention. Sometimes I cross the road and then mom yells at me. I love to take naps during the day and get attention at night. I enjoy going upstairs to snuggle with my favorite person, Kaylina. I live with my cousin named Smokey and we were born on the exact same day, April 2nd.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: As an attorney who helps clients prepare wills, I’d like to urge your readers to review their end-of-life plans and make sure that their pets are provided for. It’s so important to designate a new caregiver for their pets so that they are quickly rehomed to a person who will love and care for them. I own a lovable German Shepherd, and each year, I review my own life plan and adjust it if needed -- usually an adjustment in the amount I’ll give to his future caregiver to help with the financial aspects of taking in a pet, which can be substantial. -- Darren H., Philadelphia

DEAR DARREN: Thank you for this reminder. None of us likes to think about the possibility of dying, but as people who love and care for our pets, we need to do it for them, and make sure they will be loved and cared for. You can read more about how to include a pet clause in your will at this link: https://tinyurl. com/3yjbzmdx. What if you’re not in a position to make or update your will at this time? Put it on your to-do list, and in the meantime, make a list of trusted relatives and friends who you think would be good caregivers for your pet. Contact each of them to ask if they’d be willing to take in your pet if something should happen to you. This type of informal arrangement will give you some peace of mind. As soon as you’re able to do so, create a written will or review your existing will. This helps ensure that your pet will go to a loving home and minimize their stress and grief. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

That can be a problem for travelers who experience car trouble and end up stranded far away from auto body shops. Some flameless LED road flares can last for hours on end off of a single charge, providing drivers with some peace of mind should they be stranded and forced to wait awhile before a tow truck or mechanic arrives.

POST-WINTER GARDEN PREP Check for pests. Speak with a local gardening professional to determine if there are any local pests to look out for and how to recognize and remove these pets from gardens. Pests may hibernate in the soil over the winter, and such unwelcome visitors can make it difficult for gardens to thrive come spring and summer.

DID YOU KNOW? According to WorldAtlas.com, the largest city park in the world is Bosque de la Primavera in Guadalajara, Mexico. At 74,132 acres, Bosque de la Primavera is more than 14,000 acres larger than the world’s second largest city park, Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa. Bosque de la Primavera features the Rio Caliente, a geothermal river, and is home to a massive nature reserve inhabited by wild animals. The largest city park in the United States and fifth largest such park in the world is the McDowell Sonoran Preserve in Scottsdale, Arizona. The McDowell Sonoran Preserve includes 180 miles of hiking trails within its 27,800 acres. And while it might be one of the most recognizable city parks in the world, New York City’s Central Park is not counted among the world’s 20 largest city parks, despite estimates that it draws more than 40 million visitors each year. However, it is one of the most visited places in the United States. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Yellow Lenses to Rescue for Macular Degeneration ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I have an elderly friend who’s becoming blind from macular degeneration. After hearing of a particularly frustrating event she experienced due to vision loss, I remembered the great clarity that the yellow-lens (to reduce glare) glasses gave me, not just at night, but daytime also. So, I sent her a pair to see if it would help, as a lastditch effort. She called me crying, it had made such a difference! She has now had her prescription eyeglasses done with the yellow (blue-canceling?) lenses. Of course, we understand that this is just a temporary help, and won’t prevent the blindness from taking its course, but it has given her much better vision for a time. -- I.L.B. ANSWER: Age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss in industrialized countries. It is a degeneration of the central part of the retina, called the macula, which is responsible for fine detail central vision. The underlying cause is not precisely known, and the course is progressive. I was able to find a 2002 study that confirmed that yellow or orange lenses improved contrast sensitivity in people with early age-related macular degeneration, whereas red and gray lenses worsened it. Another study suggested that the perceived benefit (the subjective experience by the person) was enhanced, but that objective improvement in vision was not actually improved much at all. In my opinion, perceived benefit is still worth a great deal, and since there is little effective treatment for the more common “dry” form of ARMD beyond vitamins and smoking cessation, I am publishing your letter in hopes that some people will get improvements in their vision, as your friend did, from this low-cost treatment with essentially no risk of side effects.
MINIMIZE DARK CIRCLES UNDER THE EYES Undereye circles and swelling can be alleviated when people get to the source of the problem. A combination of treating the sources and masking the issue can help. In severe cases, individuals should visit their dermatologists.

Refresh Your Home for Spring Eliminate the extras While you’re freshening up the house, it’s the perfect time to purge unwanted and unused items, but remember that items in good condition can actually do good for those in need. By donating clothing, electronics, furniture, household goods and vehicles to be sold in The Salvation Army Family and Thrift Stores, you can help transform lives in your local community. A good rule of thumb: if you haven’t used it in the last year and it doesn’t have special sentimental value, it’s probably time to let it go.

Data from the United States Department of Justice indicates that partner violence accounted for 20 percent of all violent crime in the U.S. in 2018. The World Health Organization defines intimate partner violence as behavior within an intimate relationship that causes physical, sexual or psychological harm. Such violence can include acts of physical aggression, sexual coercion, psychological abuse, and controlling behaviors. Violence perpetrated by both current and former spouses and partners falls under the umbrella of intimate partner violence. Domestic violence is so prevalent that the National Network to End Domestic Violence reports that it fields more than 19,000 calls on a typical day. Anyone who is a victim of domestic violence or suspects a loved one or acquaintance is being abused is urged to call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 (SAFE) or 1-800-7873224 (TTY) right away.

Village of Brockport Selected for Empire State Trail Town Program BY PARKS & TRAILS NEW YORK
A
s an Empire State Trail Town, Brockport will harness visitation to the Erie Canalway Trail to support and advance economic development. Parks & Trails New York also announces the release of Bicyclists Bring Business: A Handbook for Attracting Bicyclists to New York’s Canal Communities to help Brockport and other communities market to and benefit from cycling tourists. Parks & Trails New York, the New York State Canal Corporation, and the Village of Brockport are excited to jointly announce that Brockport has been selected as the pilot community for the new Empire State Trail Town program. The program will help Brockport benefit from its location along the Erie Canalway Trail/Empire State Trail.
within a stone’s throw of the very best recreation opportunities that New York has to offer. This new pilot initiative will usher in a new chapter for the trail and make the Village of Brockport a premier destination for cyclists and tourists alike while bolstering the local economy and quality of life for the community. By continually reinventing the experiences and partnerships along the Canal corridor, we are providing fresh opportunities for New Yorkers to experience every corner of the Empire State.”
As part of the program, PTNY staff will provide technical assistance and resources to help the community attract and profit from the growing bicycle tourism market, improve the trail and infrastructure for those that walk and bike in the Village, and establish a strong community identity tied to the trail. By promoting and supporting Brockport as a premier destination for cyclists, the program seeks to create longterm economic, health, and quality of life benefits for the entire community and surrounding area.
Margaret Blackman, Mayor of the Village of Brockport, said, “Brockport is proud to have been selected as the Pilot Town for the new Empire State Trail Towns program. We look forward to discovering new ways to connect our downtown businesses to Empire State trail users and see our already strong connection to the Erie Canal benefit from this collaborative project.”
PTNY will work with the Village to establish a diverse Trail Town steering committee consisting of representatives from local businesses, organizations, institutions, and community groups. The steering committee will assist PTNY staff with data collection efforts and research to document existing conditions in the Village, and use these findings to create a detailed action plan that includes both short and long-term goals and recommendations. The action plan will help guide planning efforts, and will help foster collaboration between Village stakeholders and the general public on event planning, advocacy, stewardship, and marketing. With the completion of the Empire State Trail in 2020, the Erie Canalway Trail— the east-west leg of the statewide system— is growing in popularity. An economic impact study completed by PTNY in 2014 showed that the ECT attracts nearly 1.6 million annual visits and generates over $250 million in annual economic impact. Trail use figures from 2021 estimated that the Erie Canalway Trail drew over 3.1 million annual visits, including over 58,000 visits to the trail in Brockport. The popularity of the Erie Canalway Trail is increasing as is, presumably, its economic impact. Communities along the Canalway Trail system, like Brockport, are in the perfect position to build on the national publicity of the Empire State Trail. The Empire State Trail Town Program will be modeled after the successful Great Allegheny Passage Trail Town program established by the Progress Fund in 2007. A recent study estimated that tourism along the 150-mile Great Allegheny Passage resulted in over $121 million in economic impact in 2019, including an estimated $19 million in tax revenue. Robin Dropkin, Executive Director of Parks & Trails New York, said, “We are thrilled to be working with the Village of Brockport as the first Empire State Trail Town. Brockport already has a great reputation and a lot to offer outdoor enthusiasts. We look forward to helping the Village build strong partnerships, create safer streets for bicyclists and pedestrians, and improve connections between the Erie Canalway Trail and Main Street businesses.” New York State Canal Corporation Director Brian U. Stratton said, “Over the past two years, the Empire State Trail has brought bikers, hikers, and walkers and more

Bicyclists Bring Business Handbook In order to help communities along the corridor benefit from their proximity to the Canalway Trail and take advantage of the economic benefits of bicycle tourism, Parks & Trails New York has also released an updated version of Bicyclists Bring Business: A Handbook for Attracting Bicyclists to New York’s Canal Communities. The new guide provides background data on the economic benefits of bicycle tourism, and walks communities through the strategies that community leaders and business owners can use to attract bike tourists and tap into the bicycle tourism market. The guide presents the essential steps of how Canalway Trail communities can benefit from trail users, including strategies to attract bicycle tourists and provide them with a positive experience. The 40-page guide features data from background research on bicycle tourism and provides numerous examples of successful strategies employed around the country. BRAIN-HEALTHY HABITS TO EMBRACE Cognitive decline is a condition that is often associated with aging, but even middle-aged people can experience memory loss or cognition issues. The Alzheimer’s Association says that more than five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. By 2050, that number could rise to as high as 16 million people. More than 747,000 Canadians are living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, says the Canadian Alzheimer’s Association. Although there is no definitive way to prevent dementia, living a long, vibrant life may be possible by encouraging some healthy habits for the brain. It is never too late or too early to begin health and lifestyle changes. Exercise: Becoming more active can improve brain volume, reduce risk for dementia and improve thinking and memory skills. The journal Neurology found that older people who vigorously exercise performed better on cognitive tests than others of the same age, placing them at the equivalent of 10 years younger. Increased blood flow that occurs with physical activity may help generate new neurons in the hippocampus, an area of the brain involved with learning and memory. The Harvard Medical School says aerobic exercise may help improve brain tissue by improving blood flow and reducing the chances of injury to the brain from cholesterol buildup in blood vessels. Quit smoking: The Alzheimer’s Association indicates that evidence shows smoking increases the risk of cognitive decline. Smoking can impair blood flow to the brain and cause small strokes that may damage blood vessels. Eat healthy foods: Foods that are good for the heart and blood vessels also are good for the brain. These include fresh fruits and vegetables,
whole grains, fish-based proteins, unsaturated fats, and foods containing omega-3 fatty acids. Neurologists state that, while research on diet and cognitive function is limited, diets, such as Mediterranean and Mediterranean-DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), may contribute to a lower risk of cognitive issues. Consume caffeine: Caffeine may help boost memory performance and brain health. A Journal of Nutrition study found people ages 70 and older who consumed more caffeine scored better on tests of mental function than those who consumed less caffeine. Caffeine may help improve attention span, cognitive function and feelings of well-being. Information from Psychology Today also indicates caffeine may help in the storage of dopamine, which can reduce feelings of depression and anxiety. In addition, compounds in cocoa and coffee beans may improve vascular health and help repair cellular damage due to high antioxidant levels. Work the brain: Engaging in mentally stimulating activities can create new brain connections and more backup circuits, states Dr. Joel Salinas, a neurologist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. Working the brain through puzzles, reading and participating in social situations can stimulate the release of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a molecule essential for repairing brain cells and creating connections between them. A good way to combine these lifestyle factors is to take an exercise class with friends, mixing the social, stimulation and exercise recommendations together. Cognitive decline can come with aging, but through healthy habits, people can reduce their risk of memory loss and dementia.
HOW SMALL BUSINESSES CAN MAKE THE MOST OF LOCAL MARKETS Don’t overdo it. A cluttered stall at a festival or marketplace may make it difficult for consumers to browse or find what they’re looking for. NFIB® advises business owners to fill the space without it making it appear cluttered. Keep extra inventory on hand to restock displays as sales are made throughout the day.

Antique things have an appreciation and worth. Something can be old, but it can be timeless; therefore, it becomes an antique. If this antique is preserved and deemed precious, it could be passed down as a family heirloom. ~CeeLo Green

Brides-to-be devote plenty of time to thinking about their wedding gowns, and some women spend months scouring stores for their ideal designs. But what if the perfect gown is already tucked away in a family member’s closet? Some brides view a hand-medown gown with a degree of skepticism. After all, people may poke fun at dresses passed on by well-meaning friends and family that feature styling that is out-ofdate (think 1980s shoulder pads). However, in most cases, dresses can be altered and turned into something that fits the new bride’s style and physique. Wearing a hand-me-down gown is something many brides consider, especially if the dress has sentimental meaning or is a family heirloom. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Treasure Hunting Safety Tips For The Savvy Yard Sale Shopper Second-hand items, especially electronics, building supplies, appliances and helmets, may carry certain risks if damaged or used. If you are planning on reselling consumer items, check the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s Web site for a guide on things that can and cannot be sold, and for product recalls. CSA Group, a leading certification and testing organization, offers these safety tips for yard sale shoppers. Second-hand items: Avoid electrical or gas products if a label from a recognized certification organization, such as CSA Group, is missing. Look closely at the mark to ensure it matches the design and colour of certification marks from the same organization on other similar products.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * For moister and softer cookies, use honey as a substitute for a third of the sugar in your cookie recipe. * And speaking of honey, did you know it has antibacterial properties? Yep! Try rubbing a bit of it over a small cut for faster, more natural healing. * “Keep venetian blinds from sticking to one another and discourage dust by rubbing them down individually with a sheet of fabric softener. This effect will last at least a month, in my experience.” -- S.F. in Alabama * “Have a headache? Try drinking a couple of glasses of a sports drink. This works for my friends and me. Maybe we just need to be drinking more water, but the sports drinks get us back on track more quickly than medicine most times.” -- E.L. in Colorado * “This time-tested tip will keep your houseplants in the green while you’re away from home: Set plants in the bathtub in an inch or less of water. If your flowerpot does not have drain holes, get a short length of cotton rope and feed it from the topsoil to the tub. This will keep plants alive and thriving for a week or more.” -- D.R. in Florida * “Having a hard time cutting out soda? Try this: Every time you reach for a glass of soda, drink a full cup of water first. You will find that your thirst is sated better, and you are not as “thirsty” for that sugar water!” -- F.E. in South Carolina

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Waiting Out COVID
An unscientific poll of senior friends and neighbors revealed just what we’ve accomplished during the past two years of this pandemic. The answer: not much. Mostly, it seems, we’ve been waiting. Waiting for it to be safe to shop in person. Waiting for our clubs and meetings to start up again. Waiting for a visit from family across the country that has feared bringing COVID to our door. Waiting for all the vaccines and boosters to do what they were supposed to do. Waiting to be unafraid again. In the beginning we were all for following the rules. We seniors are a tough bunch, and we know a lot. We have coping skills that got us through any number of crises life has thrown at us. But this pandemic has brought many of us to our knees. Each person in my humble survey could, when queried, point to the exact time when the tide turned in their mental health. It was the omicron variant and the additional vaccine booster, when it became apparent that COVID wasn’t going away soon. For me, a daily to-do list has come in handy. On a sheet of paper I have two columns: one work, one play. In the work column there are household tasks such as doing one load of laundry. In the play column are things like wiping the dust off the piano and learning a new song each week. On the back of the page are two more columns. One is a list of names, and somebody gets called every day. In the other column is an ever-lengthening list of things that are going right. This one is sometimes hard to fill out, but it gets done, even if it’s only notes like: Completed a crossword puzzle in seven minutes. Try it. Make your lists, especially if you’ve felt yourself sinking under the weight of this never-ending pandemic. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.
This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

Angry Recently, it seems many are hung up over the price of gas. Hey folks, there are harmless people dying and families forever being torn apart, and you are complaining about having to pay a bit more for fuel? We are one of the richest nations on earth with the lowest gas prices. I certainly don’t like it, but it is a tiny price to pay compared to the horrible situation befalling many others! I’m angry.
S E V RA It’s spring! Just a friendly reminder that it is spring, and soon the animals out there will be having babies. Many will be out looking for food to feed their babies. Watch out for them because, if they are killed, you will be killing the babies, too, since they will starve to death. Also, with the deer, if a deer crosses in front of you, stop and watch for a baby. Many times the baby is lagging behind mom. I even do this when more than one deer are up ahead of me because you never know how many more are coming. I watch the sides of the road for any animal. By doing all of this, I have never hit or killed a animal. Have a great spring!
Hair? They spent our tax money on hair style discrimination? We can’t afford food, gas, or utilities, yet our lovely government spent weeks – and our money – discussing hair? I guess they want us middle class folks weak and dependent upon our government. Thank God I still have my right arm to work...and vote.
Bags for you! To the person who wrote a few weeks ago about paper versus plastic bags: Why not use a reusable fabric bag? They are not a new idea, and I would be happy to pass on any number of the reusable bags I’ve collected. I collect, wash, and dry them, and they’re ready for a new home. I’d even be happy to sew you your very own reusable fabric bag and created an email account just for you: isewbagsforyou@gmail.com. Drop me a note and I’ll happily sew you a bag. Just promise me that you’ll actually use it (more than once)!
Kudos, Avon Lions Club! Rain or shine (or snow!), the Avon Lions Club puts on a chicken barbecue every spring, and our family looks forward to it each time. Club members are always there in good spirits and with smiling faces, even when the weather doesn’t cooperate. Thanks for the great meal and your commitment to the community!

How thoughtful! To the kind lady at Eastview Mall with her grandkids: it was so nice of you to purchase a carousel ride for the little girl who looked to be all of three years old. You can only ride the carousel if you have dollar bills, and her mother only had a credit card. Kudos!

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A TEAM PLAYER The ability to communicate, interact and work collectively with others is both a professional and personal asset. But in certain ways, the reliance on technology has made working as a team more complicated. People have grown accustomed to spending large quantities of time alone working at computers or on phones and tablets, potentially compromising their ability to work directly with others when the need arises. According to Monster.com, when it comes to choosing a candidate for a new job or promotion, employers consistently say they want a team player. That means it’s advantageous for professionals looking to further their careers to brush up on their team-building and social skills.
