Solar electricity is generated through a process known as the photovoltaic affect. Sunlight shines on solar panels, which are mounted on the roof of the home or in another prominent location. Each panel typically has between 60 to 72 solar cells strung together. These photovoltaic cells use the irradiation in sunlight to stimulate the flow of electrons in the semiconductor material, which creates direct current, or DC, electricity. Systems that directly convert the DC to alternating current, or AC, the type of power voltage used in a house, do so by way of an inverter. The inverter feeds power to the circuit board.

WAYS TO MAKE HOMES SAFER
DID YOU KNOW? Modern cars are technological marvels, and it turns out drivers may value tech over all else, including their choice of automaker. A 2017 study from Autotrader asked 1,000 participants an assortment of questions about technology and car buying. Roughly 60 percent of millennial car shoppers and more than 40 percent of baby boomers indicated they would switch vehicle brands just to get the technology features they want. Drivers are even willing to pay extra for their preferred tech. The Autotrader study found that the average shopper would pay an extra $2,276 to get the right tech features.

IDENTIFY AND CONTROL BED BUGS The Environmental Protection Agency says many bugs that resemble bed bugs. Identifying bed bugs correctly is a critical first step to treating an infestation. Here are some of the more notable attributes of bed bugs: · Bed bugs are generally long and brown with a flat oval-shaped body around the size of an apple seed. Bed bugs that have recently fed will be balloon-like and reddish-brown in color. · Young bed bugs (nymphs) are smaller, and their color is a translucent white-yellow. · Bed bug eggs are pearl-white in color and the size of a pinhead. · Bed bugs have six legs and two antennae and they cannot fly. They cannot jump long distances, instead moving by crawling and climbing. They can climb heights and drop down from above onto beds to find a meal. Orkin of Canada says that, since bed bugs are nocturnal and small, detecting them can be challenging. Usually blood stains on sheets or black spots of dried bed bug excrement indicate an infestation even before bugs are seen. Bed bugs tend to be discovered in the seams of chairs and couches, between cushions, and in the folds of curtains. Bed bugs may hide in drawer joints or in electrical receptacles. They even can hide in cracks along the top or bottom of a wall. Bed bugs can survive and remain active at temperatures as low as 46 F, advises the EPA. Heat is what kills them most readily, and a room or area must be hotter than 113 F consistently to do so. Avoiding bed bugs requires diligence. Reducing clutter, inspecting secondhand furniture for bed bugs and vacuuming frequently can help. Check luggage racks and hotel rooms for bed bugs prior to remaining in the room. Cold and hot treatments may kill some of the bed bugs, but an infestation usually will require treatment by a professional exterminator.

Gardeners What do I need to start composting? Compost is organic material that can be added to soil to help plants grow. Food scraps and yard waste together currently make up more than 30 percent of what we throw away and could be composted instead. Making compost keeps these materials out of landfills where they take up space and release methane, a potent greenhouse gas. All composting requires three basic ingredients: • Browns - This includes materials such as dead leaves, branches, and twigs. • Greens - This includes materials such as grass clippings, vegetable waste, fruit scraps, and coffee grounds.
from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County • Water - Having the right amount of water, greens, and browns is important for compost development.

Your compost pile should have an equal amount of browns to greens. You should also alternate layers of organic materials of different-sized particles. The brown materials provide carbon for your compost, the green materials provide nitrogen, and the water I turned over the soil and chopped up the provides moisture to help break down clumps. S E V RA Random Act of Kindness! My 13 year-old son and two friends gathered together some change and took scooters over to Byrne Dairy for ice cream yesterday. As they were counting out their coins, two separate, kind individuals offered them a few dollars to help make up the difference. My son said afterward, “Mom, that kind of generosity makes me want to help other people like those folks helped us.” Thank you, whoever you are, for making a positive impression (and for the ice cream)! Money Well Spent! I would like to thank the beautiful young woman who handed me $5. She said I dropped it as I was cashing out at the Salvation Army in Batavia. Thank you so very much for your honesty! May all good and wonderful things come your way. - Mary Answered Prayers Prayers were answered on April 29th by a Batavia woman named Virginia. We were in need of a puppy stroller for our handicapped doxie named Symon. Virginia called us and said she had a stroller to fit Symon’s needs. On Sunday, we took a ride and met this awesome lady at a fast food place. She was very pleasant as she brought the stroller to us. In today’s world, there are still great and awesome people. God bless you, Virginia! Thank you so much. Symon really enjoyed it. Thanks again for your thoughtfulness! - Symon’s Mom

Bumblebee Prejudice You know, why does everyone hate the bumblebees that are just starting to come out this time of year? I, personally, enjoy seeing the chubby things buzzing about the newest dandelions, sipping nectar and loading their leg pockets with pollen. I feel that too many people get the urge to lay a dust-rising stomp on those cute things when they see them buzzing about their business. Well, I have something to say to you, mister, mind your own beezness! Big Price Tag Our local library proposes spending an estimated $16.6M for a new building. I love the library and use it regularly, as did my children who continue to have a passion for reading, for which I am thankful. While we need to do something to expand the size of our library and its services, this proposal is not it. The community has not had the opportunity to review the “space study” behind the proposal. Additionally, the timing is poor. We are just coming out of a pandemic and facing record-high inflation. Now is not the time to raise the “Library Tax” from just over $800k to $2.5M annually. We need to do something to modernize our Library as well as to expand its size and the services it can deliver; however, I believe there are other options which would better serve our community. I will be voting “no,” but I still love our library. Paying Off Debt Will taxpayers please pay off my mortgage and car loan even though I did sign for them, accepting the responsibility to repay them? What a pile in Washington!

National FROG JUMPING D A Y WHICH FROGS ARE THE SAME? National Frog Jumping Day has turned into a tradition that came to life from the idea of a short story. Mark Twain, one of the most famous and celebrated authors in literature, published his first short story named “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” in 1865. The premise of the story is about a man named Jim Smiley, a compulsive better. He trains a pet frog he names Dan’l Webster and bets his frog can jump higher than all the other frogs in town. Inspired by this story, Calaveras County in Northern California started hosting a Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee during the third week of May. Their main event is the frog jumping competition. One frog named Rosie the Ribeter has held the jumping record at 21 feet, 5 3/4 inches since 1986.

Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

Cat pet parents must be especially diligent in their quest to squelch reproduction to help control cat populations. According to The Spruce: Pets, female cats that are not spayed will come into estrus (heat) as early as age four months. The animal health resource BondVet says a cat can go into heat as often as every two to three weeks. Generally, though, cats are seasonal breeders, indicates the United Kingdom-based RSPCA, which means heat cycles slow down in autumn. Another thing to note is that cats do not enter menopause like people and other animals. That means a female cat can continue to reproduce well into her senior years.

HOUSEBREAKING PUPPIES How often a puppy will need to defecate depends on the food being fed and when meals are offered. The American Kennel Club says that most puppies will need to poop shortly after a meal, anywhere from 15 minutes to a few hours.
Gold Standard Publication
Puppies typically can hold urine a little longer overnight, but probably won’t be able to go the entire night without a potty break. Many pups can last around six hours from the last time they’ve gone out. An early-morning bathroom break will be needed, or consider penning the dog with puppy pads to catch the mess until the dog gains greater control over its bladder.

Oakfield’s Susan Zeliff Shares Calling to Support Veterans & End Food Insecurity BY A M A N DA D U D E K
W
hat do the Warrior House of WNY, The Community Center in Oakfield, and The Goose Food Pantry have in common? The woman at the center of all three: Susan Zeliff. Since the launch of the Warrior House of WNY Inc., Susan Zeliff has felt a call to help others that has only grown throughout the last five years. When Susan Zeliff and her husband obtained farmland in Orleans County, it came with a house on the property. “We had no need of another house at that time,” shared Zeliff. “At the time, we were part of a circle which included several Veterans, and they mentioned how nice it would be to get a bunch of Veterans together to hunt on the property.” The idea struck a chord with the Zeliff family, and in 2016, the Warrior House of WNY Inc. was created and obtained 501(c)3 status. “There are many Veterans in my family,” said Zeliff. “It is really about humanity. Veterans are the ones who have given the most, and at the end of the day, when their job is done, it is still not over. I don’t feel people are always the most respectful about what they have given. Our Veterans often come back different people, affecting their mentality, their relationships, and their families.” Zeliff is pleased to see supporting local Veterans has made a positive impact on her sons. “They hear [the Veterans’] stories and make friends with them,” she explained. “I can see that they are getting it. I feel like this is what we have been called to do.” This has only been the beginning. In 2018, Susan Zeliff came face-to-face with another need, one she also felt called to meet. It began during Zeliff ’s first week substitute teaching at her children’s school. “That first Friday, I learned about the backpack program,” she said. “I wondered why certain kids were receiving these items.” Zeliff was told that this was all some children had to eat over the weekend. “For my kids, this is a 20-minute snack!” she exclaimed. “To think this was what they were going to have over the weekend broke my heart.” Today, Zeliff and her fellow volunteers supply snacks for about 160 students each day. “It transpired so seamlessly,” she said. “Our community has been amazing. They really stepped up! We serve 80 families, and we could not do it without our incredible volunteers and generous donors. They deserve all the kudos!” Initially started as more of a school closet, the food pantry moved to an outside location after COVID struck. However, as its new building is about 6,000 square feet in size, Zeliff plans to incorporate both a community center and a farmers market, as well, making fresh produce more accessible locally. For the Zeliff family, helping those around them is simply what they do. “My family—myself, my husband, and our four kids—have that farmer mentality that is all about giving back,” explains Zeliff. “My husband practices regenesis farming which focuses on putting back into the soil those nutrients which have been stripped for so long. We are not just here for ourselves; we are here to give back.” She contiuned, “I think everyone is called to do something,” she continued. “These are the pieces to which we feel called. Our ultimate goal is to teach our children that this is important. Just because an experience is

not happening to us or to someone we know does not mean it is not impacting us and people we know.” The Zeliff family is now planning a location in Wyoming County where Veterans and their families experience retreats which could double as an event space. “Our goal is to bring whole Veteran families together,” said Zeliff. “At the same time, we realize we have to raise funds. We figure people are already in need of spaces to rent for their events and meetings, so this would be a natural fit and benefit the community, as well.” In the meanwhile, the Zeliffs will host a grand opening for their Community Center in Oakfield at the same location that houses their food pantry: The Goose. “On June 11th, we are going to have our grand opening from 9am-3pm, and everyone and anyone is invited. We will hold a 50/50 and a big basket raffle for which our high school Honor Society is currently selling raffle tickets. We will also dish up free strawberry shortcake!” Both the middle and high school student councils hold food drives for The Goose, and several high school students will be on-hand to help with the grand opening. “I feel time is a greater commodity than the dollar,” she said. “I hope people consider donating even one hour a week to push that goodwill into their lives.” As for all those who volunteer with The Warriors of WNY Inc., The Community Center, and The Goose, Zeliff stated, “Not one person here is getting a paycheck. Every dollar you give goes directly to those in need. I hope everyone visits and sees how impactful giving their time can be.” Enjoy this article? TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Cause of Chronic Cough Has Doctors Stumped ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I picked up a cough while traveling in Europe more than two years ago. No other symptoms have ever presented. Since that time, I have received every test imaginable, including spirometry, multiple breathing tests, CT scans, X-rays and most recently a bronchoscopy. Nothing was discovered through any of these tests. Other than the cough, I am very healthy. The cough is driving me crazy, however. I have been prescribed every type of medication, and nothing helps. My doctors are at a standstill and have nothing further to offer. I don’t know where to go from here, but I know I can’t live my life with this cough. I avoid a lot of personal interaction because it is so disruptive to constantly be coughing. I would greatly appreciate your help with this, and any advice regarding what steps need to be taken next. -- P.M. ANSWER: Chronic cough (lasting more than several months) is most frequently a result of acid reflux, asthma or postnasal drip, although there are many more causes, including infection, which would be a concern given that you have a clear idea of when it started. Despite an extensive evaluation for cough, it is not that uncommon that people are left with no explanation but with a persistent cough. There are other, less-common treatments at this point, some of which your doctors might not have tried. The first is the medication gabapentin (Neurontin). This is used for a condition called laryngeal neuropathy, and I have had a few spectacular cases where the cough disappears entirely. People have written saying that their doctor prescribed the medication for them after reading it in the column and they also had relief, even after decades of persistent coughing, so I think this condition may be more common than I have ever thought. A second has been a cough suppressant. I am very cautious about using opiate drugs, and it is certainly not appropriate for some people, but cautious use of tramadol in selected patients has been successful in reducing, but not eliminating, cough. Just yesterday in the clinic, one of the residents I supervise had a patient with chronic cough who had dramatic improvement through the use of speech therapy. Looking it up today, I find trials showing significant improvement, if modest, with this approach, as well as several ongoing trials. Given the potential side effects of gabapentin and tramadol, I think I will be making more referrals to my speech and language pathology colleagues, and suggest you speak with your doctors about some of these options. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Unfortunately, there are no cures for progressive dementias that are linked to plaque tangles in the brain and changes in the way the brain processes the protein alpha-synuclein. Patience and various medications may be needed to help those with dementia live fuller lives. Cholinesterase inhibitors are mainstays in dementia treatment. These medications prevent the breakdown of acetylcholine, a chemical messenger important for learning and memory. Acetylcholine supports communication among nerve cells by keeping acetylcholine levels high. Physical therapy and cognitive therapy may be used in conjunction with medication to assist those with various dementias.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Finding the Cellphone That’s Right for You When it comes to buying a phone, there are so many choices that the decision can be difficult. Much depends on what you want to do with it and how much you want to spend. What can we do on our phones? Depending on the type of phone (and our skill level), we can make calls, get voicemails, look at maps, write shopping lists and notes, roam the internet, play games, receive and send text messages, take photos, have face-to-face meetings and more. Some of us, however, would rather keep it simple. We want to make and receive calls, period. If a phone comes with a few more features, that’s fine, but we probably won’t use them. How to choose: Decide what you need the phone to do. Ask a lot of questions, especially of tech-savvy family members. Think about whether you want to pay upfront for your phone or have a long-term contract. Decide whether the phone is only for emergencies or if you’ll use it daily. There are a handful of good phones out there if you search the internet for “phones for seniors.” You’ll find dozens of websites describing the various phones now available. Visit the phone stores near you, if possible. You’ll need to handle the phones to be sure you can read and press the buttons with ease. Smaller phones are lightweight, but aren’t necessarily the best if you can’t see the screen or the buttons are tiny. The bigger ones, on the other hand, might be too heavy. Look into the flip phones as well, the ones that fold in half for ease of carrying in a pocket. Look for discounts. For example, you might get a discount if you’re an AARP member. If you’re on Medicaid or SNAP benefits, see if you qualify for the Lifeline discount. And remember: Keep it charged!

For the filling, first sauté the mushrooms in the sesame oil in a large nonstick frying pan over medium-low heat until just softened. Remove from the heat and set aside. In a large bowl, combine the rest of the filling ingredients with the mushrooms. Mix together using your hands, really breaking up the short rib meat to make a uniform texture. For the dumplings, line a couple of baking sheets with parchment and set aside. Fill a small bowl with water. Unwrap the wonton wrappers and cover lightly with a piece of clingfilm to keep them moist. Lay a wrapper on a clean work surface and put 1 ounce of the meat filling in the center. Dip a forefinger into the water and run it along the edges of the wrapper to moisten the surface. Now bring the open edges to the center, and pinch where the edges meet each other, creating four seams in a cross shape. Set aside and cover with clingfilm or a damp tea towel while you shape the rest. Repeat with the remaining wrappers and filling, making sure the dumplings are not touching on the baking sheets. To a medium saucepan, add the vegetable oil and heat to 340 F (170 C). Working in batches, place the dumplings on their sides in the pan in a single layer without crowding. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes until golden brown. Transfer the fried dumplings to a wire rack or kitchen paper-lined plate to drain. Repeat with the remaining dumplings. If you don’t plan on cooking them straight away, you can freeze them on the baking sheets, then bag them up and store in the freezer. Top with some of the silgochu and curly spring onion and serve immediately with the sriracha. Page 15

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Try Rescue Network for Breed-Specific Adoptions DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read your recent column about using caution in the purchase of specific breeds of dogs or adopting from a shelter. Please advise your readers that there is a third option. Almost every breed is assisted by a rescue group, usually handled by breeders. Locating such a group for a specific breed can be done by contacting the American Kennel Club (AKC). We had a wonderful Bernese Mountain Dog that was too small to be a show dog, and a Sheltie whose father was a champion but was still too large to be a show dog. This gives adopters the breed they want and dogs who otherwise would end up in shelters -- and possibly be put down -- get a family instead. -- Kathy F. DEAR KATHY: Thank you for highlighting this excellent option. The AKC Rescue Network pulls together over 450 rescue groups, dog breeders and specialists in rehabilitation and rescue to save dogs that would otherwise be placed in shelters or euthanized. Find more information about their work at www.akc.org/akc-rescue-network. Breeds are listed alphabetically to make them easier to locate. Fostering and rehabilitation of dogs through the network is somewhat unique in that dogs stay in the foster/rehab until they are rehomed. Breeders and dog fanciers are among the most enthusiastic participants in fostering and rehabilitating dogs. They take on the expense and time commitment to work with specific breeds and prepare them for a loving family. But they also get to know the dogs, their temperament and their needs -- so that they’re matched with the right people. Check out this network and the work that they do. Thanks again, Kathy. Send your questions, tips and comments to ask@pawscorner.com.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * “Planning a new roof? Choose a light color for cooling benefits. Also check with your home-insurance company to see what discounts it might offer for different styles or options, like upgraded hurricane clips or fire-retardant materials.” -R.E.W. in Tennessee

* Cut a cord of firewood in the spring, and cure it yourself. Store it away from the house and properly care for the wood by stacking it where it will have access to the sun and wind to dry it. Let it season for six months or longer, and you’ll have firewood ready when the temperatures drop again.
* “Place a bit of clear tape over the spot where you are going to drive in a nail to prevent the nail from cracking drywall. It will go right in. Also, if you’re nailing into wood, drag your nail through some soap (bar soap is fine) before striking it. This does the same thing -- it will keep the wood from splitting. You can even keep a travel-size bar of soap in your nail apron for just this purpose.” -P.K. in New Jersey * Shopping for bagged frozen vegetables? Give them the squeeze test: If the vegetables feel hard and solid, they have thawed and refrozen. Choose another bag. * Keep musty smells out of your linen closet by stashing a box of baking soda on one of the shelves, just as you would in the kitchen. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

CONSERVE ENERGY AROUND THE OFFICE Conservation methods can help save energy and preserve natural resources, but business owners may also be intrigued by the potential cost-savings of conservation. Utility costs vary depending on the size of a business, but the U.S. Small Business Administration notes that prospective business owners must estimate and include such costs when seeking loans to start their businesses. Estimated utility costs can be intimidating, especially for those owners who have never before owned their own businesses. Traditional conservation methods like recycling and reusing are great ways to conserve and save around the office, but business owners also can embrace some other ways to lower their office energy costs while benefitting the planet at the same time.

DID YOU KNOW? According to KidsHealth.org, more than one-third of child injuries and deaths happen at home. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that most incidents at home occur where there is water, such as in the bathroom or kitchen; heat or flame, like in the kitchen or around the grill; toxic substances, like those found in medicine cabinets or beneath kitchen sinks; and in places where kids can fall, such as on staircases. Individuals change jobs for many reasons, including greater professional satisfaction, money or a change of location. The financial experts at The Balance say that people change jobs more frequently than many people may think, noting today’s average worker changes jobs 12 times during his or her career. It is not uncommon for workers to change careers several times in a lifetime. The notion that the job a person starts out in directly after graduation is the one that he or she will have for the rest of his or her life - or at the very least, several years - is no longer the norm. Many younger workers migrate between jobs for greater compensation and fulfillment. Older workers, too, are faced with career stagnation. A survey from the University of Phoenix School of Business found 59 percent of working adults say they’re interested in taking the leap of a midlife career change. Once the idea for a career change has been planted in a person’s mind, he or she may be anxious to jump right in. However, career coaches and other experts say that it is better to take the transition slowly and confirm that changing careers is truly the path to take. Finding the right time for the transition is equally important.

Wedding insurance can provide couples who are about to tie the knot with some peace of mind on their big days. Many wedding venues require couples carry liability coverage in the case of accidents, injuries or incidents. But wedding insurance policies may even surprise couples with regard to what they cover. Each policy is different, and couples may be able to customize wedding insurance policies to cover a host of items. Many policies cover couples in the wake of cancellations or postponements due to weather, damage to the facility or even a change of heart on the part of the couple holding the policy. But some policies may provide coverage for couples should their photographers and/or caterers fail to appear. Policies may also cover lost, stolen or damaged items, including equipment rentals, bridal growns, jewelry, and/or gifts. Couples should speak with their wedding venue representative to determine if the venue offers extended coverage and ultimately compare those offerings to policy estimates they receive on their own.
