HOST A SUCCESSFUL YARD SALE Price things reasonably It’s tempting to overprice items, but a good rule of thumb is to mark things for one-half to one-third of the original value. Be open to negotiation, but try to haggle with a “buy one get one” approach, rather than marking down the price considerably. After all, the goal is to get rid of as many items as possible, with financial gain a distant second.

One tool we can utilize is traps as a deterrent. The first one is to use burlap folded over and secured to the
tree to create an open suitcase or upsidedown V with the burlap. The caterpillars climb up the tree into the V suitcase and stop because they typically are not smart enough to crawl down the V and up again on the outside. We can then monitor and dispose of any found caterpillars in the trap. Another method is to use duct tape and to trap the caterpillars. You use the
tape to create a wide band around the tree and then create the V with the sticky side of the tape exposed so the caterpillars become stuck.

Hello, my name is . I’m a 3 year old Maltese and I only weigh 10 pounds. I love to wear whatever my Mom picks out for me. I’m very particular about my toys but I like using them to bait my friend into playing. My favorite thing to do is sit in my parents laps whether they are working, exercising, or just hanging out. Nothing stops me from trying to lay on them. I was born to snuggle.

Airbnb: A relative newcomer to the accommodations arena, an Airbnb is a residental property that hosts renters, often on a short-term basis. These may be private apartments, condos, homes, or vacation properties that owners temporarily sublet to travelers. While Airbnb is the name of a registered rental marketplace company (airbnb.com), the term often is used for any property that follows the same model, including options from companies like VRBO and HomeAway. Airbnb is an abbreviation that stands for “air mattress bed and breakfast.”

DID YOU KNOW? According to the American Cancer Society, the average age at the time of diagnosis of testicular cancer is 33. Young and middle-aged men are the most likely to be diagnosed with testicular cancer, though the ACS notes that 14 percent of cases occur in children, teens and men over the age of 55. The ACS estimates that roughly 440 men will die of testicular cancer in 2021. Though that’s troubling, testicular cancer can usually be treated successfully. In fact, the ACS notes that a man’s lifetime risk of dying from the disease is one in 5,000. However, the incidence rate of testicular cancer has been increasing in many countries, including the United States, for several decades. The reasons for that are unknown, though the rise in incidences underscores the need for men, especially young men, to discuss testicular cancer, including its risk factors and symptoms, with their physicians.

www.landltransmissions.com RIDESHARING SAFETY TIPS Ridesharing is a growing trend among travelers from all walks of life. Some proponents of ridesharing support the concept because they feel it’s an eco-friendly means of traveling, while others find it’s a great way to save money. Still others employ third-party ridesharing services as a responsible, affordable way to travel when going out for a night on the town. With a greater number of people sharing rides and interacting with strangers than ever before, safety while ridesharing is an issue to take seriously. While ridesharing trips often occur without incident, there have been some instances of violent altercations involving drivers and passengers. According to the Taxicab, Limousine and Paratransit Association, ridesharing companies use a background check service to confirm criminal convictions and to make sure drivers are legally able to drive. However, these services may not perform FBI fingerprinting checks conducted by law enforcement officials, whereas taxi drivers are subjected fingerprinting. So some ridesharing drivers who have committed crimes in the past but have never been caught may pass ridesharing background checks, but they might not pass tests that taxi companies would insist they submit to, such as fingerprinting tests. While ridesharing, whether it entails carpooling or using an established ridesharing service, can be convenient, passengers must take steps to ensure their own safety when sharing rides.

BAKED ONION, GOAT CHEESE AND SUN-DRIED TOMATO DIP
HOW TO HEAL FROM MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES THAT AROSE DURING THE PANDEMIC Ask for help. The pandemic was proof that it’s impossible to go it alone through difficult situations, so individuals should not hesitate to rely on loved ones as they recover. MHA notes that social support is crucial when healing from trauma and touts the value of sharing one’s story. Such sharing enables individuals to process their thoughts and feelings.
Prep time: 20 minutes Cook time: 20 minutes Servings: 6 1 jar (16 ounces) Aunt Nellie’s Holland-Style Onions nonstick cooking spray 2 tablespoons chopped oil-packed, sun-dried tomatoes, divided 1 large clove garlic, minced 4 tablespoons sliced fresh basil, divided coarse ground black pepper, to taste 1 tablespoon oil from sun-dried tomatoes or olive oil, divided 1 log (8 ounces) goat cheese 1/2 teaspoon Mediterranean herb seasoning (optional) crackers (optional) flatbread (optional) pita chips (optional) Heat oven to 350 F.
PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Pet’s First Visit to the Veterinarian DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m planning to adopt a cat soon. This is my first pet, and I’m looking forward to caring for it. The local shelter gave me a few instructions to follow, pre-adoption, including making an appointment for a veterinary checkup. Is there anything I should know about my cat’s first vet visit? -- Kara L., Buffalo, N.Y.
Drain onions well; pat dry. Spray shallow, oven-proof dish (34-cup size) with nonstick cooking spray. Place onions in dish. Press with spatula to flatten and crush. Sprinkle with 1 tablespoon tomatoes, garlic, 2 tablespoons basil and black pepper, to taste. Drizzle with 1/2 tablespoon oil. Cut goat cheese into 6-8 rounds. Arrange over onion mixture. Sprinkle with remaining tomatoes; drizzle with remaining oil. Sprinkle with herb seasoning, if desired. Bake uncovered 20-30 minutes, or until cheese is soft and mixture is bubbly. Sprinkle with remaining basil. Serve warm with crackers, flatbread or pita chips, if desired.
DEAR KARA: Congratulations on deciding to accept a cat into your life! It will be a rewarding experience. I’m also glad that you’re doing your homework ahead of time to give your cat the best start on a new life. Here are a few tips that will help with your first veterinary visit: * Research local clinics ahead of time. Is there one that specializes in cats? * Purchase a cat carrier that best fits your cat (in terms of size, not decor). This will make transporting the cat from the shelter and to and from the vet much easier and safer. * Keep all paperwork from the shelter in a folder and bring it with you. * You should be able to be present during the exam. It’s a great time to ask questions about caring for your cat. Be ready to take notes. * Listen to the vet as he or she gives you information about your cat’s general health. Vets or their assistants often talk to you throughout the process, telling you what they’re checking for and the result. * Follow the vet’s instructions. If a follow-up visit or more tests are needed, make sure you do it. Write down special instructions like how much and what type of food to feed your cat, or instructions on giving medication. And don’t be afraid to ask for clarification if you don’t understand something. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

LeRoy’s Natasha Sutherland of Stein Farms Shares her Dairy Farming Passion BY AMANDA K. DUDEK
J
une is Dairy Month, and no one is more aware of this than LeRoy dairy farm owner, Natasha Sutherland. Natasha’s family, the Steins, have been dairy farmers in Genesee County since in the 1950s and are still going strong. Filled with both challenges and incredible advancements, dairy farming continues to be Natasha’s passion. “Stein Farms, LLC is a third-generation dairy farm founded by my grandparents in 1956,” said Natasha. “My dad is one of 42 first cousins, so there are many Stein family farms in the area.” Having a lot of family around is one of the things Natasha most appreciates about working on the family farm. “I love that I have the gift of working with my family every day, although we all go to our separate homes at night,” she said. “I get to see my mom, dad, uncle, cousin, and brother often. My grandmother still lives a quarter mile from the farm, and I see her almost every day. That family connection is a gift.” In fact, 98% of dairy farms are family owned according to the American Dairy Association North East. “There is no such thing as a factory farm,” she stated. “Everyone’s terrain and management are different. Every cow is an individual and needs to be treated as such.” Stein Farms, LLC, a family business with four partners in ownership and 18 staff, continues the longstanding Stein tradition of self-reliance. “We raise all our own forages and do some custom harvesting for neighbor properties,” explained Natasha. “We have such a strong can-do attitude that we also ran our own steel fabrication business, RS Fabrication, for almost 30 years.” Natasha also enjoys life on the farm where she is the “Herd Mama.” “I spend all day with my cows. That is my joy for absolute sure!” she said, adding that Stein Farms currently boasts 1,000 mature cows as well as 800 young cows. “I make sure the cows are healthy. I have a ‘special needs’ group, as well. One cow in the group is a special needs girl who gets bullied all day if she is out with the other cows, so she stays pretty close to me. Knowing that I made a difference in their life, that they are happy and healthy, that reward is so worth it.” Incredible developments in technology are making this individually attentive care even more possible. “There is a new device that is like a Fitbit for a cow,” explained Natasha. “It is swallowed, but not passed, by the cow, and it hangs around in her stomach, giving us very accurate information about many things including her temperature, how many steps she takes, how many times she chews her cud (ruminates), and more. Right away, I receive an alert if something is not right with a cow or a whole pen of cows. This tech shows us the individual’s needs even though they live in a herd setting.” “It is amazing to see where big tech is going with Ag,” Natasha continued. “They are helping us realize new ways we can use technology.”
agricultural community as well as milk prices which are determined federally. Nevertheless, she feels local farmers are essential to their communities. “Every dollar we earn, we triple out into our community,” said Award-winning Stein Farms, LLC Natasha. “We enable this beautiful green landscape to flourish, but we don’t just exist here, we spend here. The economic impact we have is epic.” She encourages neighbors to think of the scent of manure, not as an odor, but as the smell of sustainability. “What we earn goes right back out again into some commodity we purchase locally like diesel, fertilizer, gloves, and tractors. We are the breadbasket of New York, and milk is one of the most locally sourced foods in our entire nation. When you drink milk from here, it hasn’t traveled more than two days from farm to table.” It is, in part, in the flexibility and diversity of dairy products that Natasha sees its place in the future. “A boom is coming to our population,” she said. “We are the ones who are going to feed the world. Milk protein is easy to transport anywhere in dried form, and we are becoming more efficient at producing it.” In spite of the difficulties facing local dairy farmers, Natasha says dairy “Dairy is here is here to stay, thanks in no small part to stay!” to local dairy processors who create - Natasha Sutherland products like cheese and yogurt. “We thrive on a challenge,” she said. “We will be here in spite of these things. We will find a way to be here. Western New York is beautifully filled with Right to Farm communities, and we appreciate our neighbors for that courtesy and support.” Want to support your local farm families? Natasha says it’s as simple as buying a gallon of milk and supporting your local farmers market. In fact, as the weather warms, ice cream sounds just perfect! Enjoy this article? TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
CPAP Machine Can Help With Sleep Apnea ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: How are sleep apnea, sighing and heart failure related? Recently, I was told that I have severe sleep apnea and that I must use a CPAP machine. I have noticed that during the day I frequently take a spontaneous deep breath. Is that sleep apnea while awake? I have coronary heart disease and have three stents. Will the CPAP machine help me in any way? -- A.P. ANSWER: It’s complicated. By far, the most common type of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea. This happens in people who are overweight, or in people whose neck anatomy predisposes them to the condition. During sleep, the upper airway collapses, preventing proper inspiration. This can be noticed by a sleep partner as choking, gasping or just not breathing for a prolonged time. The person eventually will wake up enough, due to lack of oxygen, to be able to take in a good breath, but will then fall back asleep. The process may happen hundreds of times a night, with the person often unaware. Sleepiness during the day (from never sleeping properly at night) and snoring are the most common symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea. CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure), which uses high pressure to keep the airway open, is the most common initial treatment for obstructive sleep apnea. In severe sleep apnea, the oxygen level in the blood can be so low for so long that the heart and lungs can be damaged, eventually leading to a type of heart failure of the right side of the heart. However, the situation is even more complex. People who have other kinds of heart failure, such as from repeated heart attacks, can develop the less common form of sleep apnea, central sleep apnea. Although this also may be treated by CPAP, it is critical to treat the underlying heart failure as well. Your doctor can tell you whether you have central or obstructive sleep apnea. Spontaneous deep breaths, sighs, are a part of normal human physiology. Sighs have several purposes, but the most important is to help keep the lungs properly expanded. Sighs might be more common in people with heart failure, but I do not know of any correlation with sleep apnea. ***

SOY FOODS PACK A POWERFUL PUNCH The Cleveland Clinic notes that soy foods provide a host of nutritional benefits. Plant protein, including soy, can provide cardiovascular benefits, including helping with people with high blood pressure lower their blood pressure to healthier levels. While many people rely on animal-based proteins to get their daily recommended intake of protein, soy foods are naturally free of cholesterol and low in saturated fats. That makes soy foods more heart-healthy sources of protein than animal products. The Cleveland Clinic says substituting soy foods for animal-based proteins a few times per week can reduce a person’s risk for cardiovascular disease. Soy foods also can be a great source of dietary fiber, though the U.S. Soybean Export Council advises consumers that not all soy products are the same. The USSEC notes that foods like soy milk and tofu contain very little fiber. People who want to utilize soy beans as a source of dietary fiber should look to foods that utilize the whole bean, such tempeh, soy flour and textured soy protein. The USSEC also notes there’s some confusion in regard to the connection between soy foods and iron, though the group admits research is ongoing. While a 1/2 cup serving of cooked soybeans contains four milligrams of iron, the phytate and soy protein present in soy foods reduce iron absorption, meaning that the body won’t really benefit from the iron. However, the USSEC recommends consumers purchase fermented soy foods, including tempeh and miso, because the body might absorb more iron from these foods than it will when consuming other types soy foods. In the spring I have counted one hundred and thirty-six different kinds of weather inside of four and twenty hours. ~ Mark Twain Page 17
NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Save the peels from your oranges, and dry them at a low temperature in the oven. You can add them to a pot of coffee or tea for a flavor boost that is refreshing and delicious. * “If your tomato garden is experiencing caterpillars, try planting dillweed close to your tomatoes. It can provide a diversion, allowing your tomatoes to grow pest-free!” -- Y.F. in Florida * “Cure your color in new garments (especially dark- or bright-colored) by soaking the item in cold, salty water before washing. Make sure that the fabric will allow this! * “Take good care of quality paint brushes, and they will take care of you! Wash thoroughly in soapy water and rinse very well. After the brush is washed, combine enough water to cover the bristles and add two tablespoons of fabric softener. Swish for a minute or two, being sure to get it in the brush good, then hang to drip dry. Before you use the brush to paint, simply rinse the fabric softener away.” -- M.E. in Washington * Baking soda can be used as a tooth scrub. It’s particularly effective against stains, as it is a mild abrasive. * “When you are dusting, don’t forget the light bulbs. Dusty light bulbs can contribute to less-bright lighting and can shorten the life of your bulbs. Turn lights off when you are not using them. You will save electricity that way.” -- A.L. in Oklahoma

Loud Obnoxious Neighbor! I’ve enjoyed my porch for 20 years. Four years ago, enter my new neighbor’s wife, who seems to enjoy screaming every sentence that comes to mind, including yelling at her 2 year old and yelling into the telephone like it was two tin cans connected by a string. Guess what? Your neighbors don’t want to hear it. I no longer enjoy sitting on my porch as I can’t stand the constant yelling that has replaced the birds chirping.
S E V RA Teamwork After last Saturday’s event involving farm equipment and electric lines (and cable lines and telephone lines) in Oakfield, I wanted to put in a good word about how all the agencies involved worked diligently together for safety, protection, and repair during this incident. Although our services were off for a bit, the agencies involved responded quickly and efficiently. Having a bird’s eye view of this provided first-hand knowledge of all that was involved and the extent it took to repair and return full service to the residents of Oakfield. In present times, it is hard to justify the rising cost of just about everything, but to witness the manpower, the equipment involved, and to see how these people worked together as a well-oiled machine, (and it is dangerous work), I can understand where at least some of the money goes when paying for these services. So, I would like to say thank you again [to these people] for all they do. Lab Visit I just went to get my blood work done. I have bad veins and am always nervous when I have to get blood drawn. I love going to [local] labs because they cater to my individual needs and always do a good job. This time I got [name]. She had a beautiful personality. Although she had trouble getting my blood to go in the syringe, she [did] get the job done. She had to stick me twice. I always tell people that they get just one chance with me. After she had trouble with the initial stick, I told her that I would come back. For her to talk me into [trying] again was, in itself, a miracle...I want to thank her for getting me through the process. Hats off to her. See you [again next time]. Helpful Staff Thanks to Avon Officer Hall and the Landpro driver who each stopped to see if we needed help after driving over an object that left a gash in our tire.

The Least Intelligent Recently, we heard of another mass shooting. This shooting was caused by what I consider the least intelligent type of person. That is, those who are prejudicial. Prejudicial people seem to believe that they had a choice in who their birth parents were. If people had that ability, then everyone would probably be wealthy and belong to a loving family, the same race, gender, and ethnic background. We would be so much alike that nobody would be able to tell us apart. That is not the case, and any intelligent person knows that. I thank God for our differences because it is those differences that make life more interesting. Lazy Jogging Pet Owner I was standing at the front door and checking out the start to a beautiful Sunday when I saw a woman jogging with her white dog through my front yard. I didn’t mind until the dog stopped for a bathroom break and proceeded to poop on my front lawn. I opened the door and made eye contact with the woman. She started pulling her dog and jogging away. Seriously, carry dog poop bags and clean up after your pet! It’s just rude, and I would have given you a bag! Busted To the couple who swiped my geraniums off my porch Saturday night: you’re on video! Enjoy my Mother’s Day flowers from my kids.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles A Trip to the Museum
A local art museum, lacking many patrons because people are still avoiding crowds due to COVID, came up with a great idea: open the place to seniors. Those of us who’ve been locked down for too long, turning up our noses at proposed activities at the senior center, thought this was a swell idea. We did, however, decline the offer of a van. Instead, we all drove in our individual vehicles to avoid being breathed on by others. The museum was ... lovely. So excited was staff to have real and actual patrons that they pulled out all the stops for us. Young docents-in-training hovered, but not too closely, as we spread out in the large, high-ceilinged rooms clutching our brochures. Spend more than 10 seconds in front of a display of Mediterranean antiquities, and a docent would appear, many steps away, to tell us about the artifacts. Squint at the detail of a Winslow Homer painting, and there would be a docent offering a magnifying glass and talking about brush work. Look at the artistry of the Native American baskets and wonder how they got all those varied colors, and a docent would know. It didn’t hurt our feelings at all to be told later that these docents-in-training were students at a local art school and would get extra credit for their participation. They did a fine job. The senior center staff did too, surprising us with a bagged lunch on the museum grounds after our visit. There were enough picnic benches for us to spread out in the sunshine, and a male spouse was commandeered to tote around a cooler of iced drinks to hand out, along with a wide variety of chips for us to trade like school children. It’s a good thing I had my checkbook in my purse. Before I left, I purchased a membership as a Friend of the Museum. I’ll be back. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT RETURNING TO SCHOOL
STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Plane exhaust kills more people than plane crashes. Approximately 10,000 people die annually from toxic airplane pollutants.
Adults who decide to return to school after a long layoff are following a popular path. According to the education resource Education Corner, a growing number of career colleges and vocational training schools now offer bachelor’s and graduate degree programs geared toward working adults. People return to school for various reasons, including the chance to learn new skills or further develop their existing skills. Some return to school because they are changing careers, while others may have lost a job or desire a promotion and feel that attaining a higher level of education or new skills can make reaching that goal more likely. Adults who hope to return to school might be surprised to learn that the educational landscape has changed considerably since they were last in a classroom.

WHY IT’S WISE TO HIRE VETERANS WITH DISABILITIES (NAPSI)—“Today, nearly 4 million Americans have a service-connected disability. At a time when many employers are struggling to fill positions, hiring veterans with disabilities can boost diversity and inclusion efforts,” explained Jeff Hall, national employment director for DAV (Disabled American Veterans). For example, Dave Ellis found it difficult to get a job after receiving an honorable discharge from the Army. “I had a severe back injury, but I also carried mental scars from active duty,” he said. After six months of searching, he was able to find a supportive company that understands and values the traits that come from military training, including job-ready skills, tested leadership abilities and a mission-focused work ethic.

Puzzle Answers This Week
For others, however, it can be a struggle. In fact, a survey in The Journal of Vocational Rehabilitation found that 57 percent of veterans with disabilities transitioning to the civilian workforce feared hiring discrimination due to their disability. “The reality is that many of America’s businesses, big and small alike, recognize the importance of hiring veterans with disabilities, but often don’t know where to begin,” added Hall.
NORMANDY
To address this need, DAV has published “The Veteran Advantage: DAV Guide to Hiring and Retaining Veterans with Disabilities.” This free, comprehensive guide is the result of more than four years of study about what the veteran community contributes to the workforce and how hiring veterans, especially disabled ones, can improve a company’s bottom line. The 36-page publication, which can be downloaded at http://dav.la/jobs, offers best practices and helpful tools for employers. But it goes further, helping to correct misperceptions and inspire more organizations to hire from this talent pool. Content includes statistics about veterans with disabilities, in-depth onboarding and retention strategies, a practical checklist for employers, and explanations of financial incentives, tax credits and other support. The Guide also highlights powerful testimonials of veterans thriving in successful careers, and case studies from employers who benefit from having disabled veterans in their workplace. Nationally respected companies such as First Data and USAA apply the findings within their own internal human resources departments and hiring teams. There are also free and helpful resources that veterans themselves can take advantage of to help with the transition into a civilian career. For example, DAV holds free career fairs throughout the country for veterans and their spouses. Details are available at http://dav.la/jobs. “While our nation’s veterans, particularly those who have been injured in service, are faced with unique challenges, they also offer the skill sets, loyalty and dedication needed to help successfully power America’s economy,” said Hall.
