Vets advise that dog owners should be able to easily feel and count dogs’ ribs when they run their fingers across the side of the animal. Pets viewed from above should display an hourglass figure that includes an indentation near the midsection. The absence of this “waist” may indicate a problem. When observing a pet from the side while he or she is standing, a slight upward slope of the stomach should be visible. A low-hanging abdomen means abdominal fat may be present.

INDICATORS IT’S TIME TO CHANGE AIR FILTERS Vehicle maintenance can protect drivers’ investments and help their automobiles run efficiently. One area drivers should pay particular attention to is their vehicles’ air filters. When operating at optimal capacity, an air filter improves fuel efficiency while ensuring vehicles accelerate smoothly without taxing the engine. But when air filters are clogged, fuel efficiency is reduced and emissions are increased, a 1-2 punch that costs motorists money and hurts the planet at the same time. Drivers can check their owners’ manuals to determine the recommended intervals to replace air filters, but the following are a handful of indicators that suggest it’s time to change them. Gas mileage: Unless you just purchased your vehicle, you likely know how many miles you can drive on a full tank of gas. If that gas mileage is suddenly slipping and you find yourself visiting the filling station more frequently, then it might be time to replace your air filter. Engine light: Drivers may be alerted to engine issues when the “Check engine” lights up on the vehicle’s dashboard. This light may come on to indicate a problem with the air filter, as clogged air filters reduce air flow to the engine, resulting in an imbalanced air-fuel mixture that adversely affects the engine. Starting and idling problems: Vehicles sometimes don’t start up as smoothly as they once did, and drivers may also notice vehicles are not idling smoothly. These symptoms may indicate misfiring spark plugs that are being polluted (and made less effective) by a dirty air filter that is reducing the flow of air to the engine. Acceleration difficulties: Automobiles that are operating at peak capacity accelerate quickly. But dirty, worn out air filters adversely affect acceleration. Drivers who notice that their cars are struggling to accelerate when stoplights turn green or on highways may need to replace their vehicles’ air filters. Dirty air filter: Perhaps the biggest indicator that an air filter needs to be replaced is the filter itself. If you cannot find the air filter on your own, consult your vehicle owner’s manual to determine where it is. Once you find the air filter, examine it in broad daylight. Clean air filters are white, so if the filter has darkened, it may need to be replaced.

Ways to Become More Active Every Day In addition to working toward at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week, it’s important to avoid being sedentary, when possible. You can do that by making choices that build activity in your day. Some examples include: • Taking the stairs • Printing to the printer farthest away from your desk at work • Getting off the bus or subway one stop early • Parking in the farthest space from the door • Walking around while you are on the phone or having walking meetings

HOW TO ENCOURAGE KIDS TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR TEETH
When someone with celiac disease eats gluten the body mounts an immune system response that attacks the villi, which are small fingerlike projections that line the small intestine. The villi, when damaged, cannot properly absorb nutrients from food. Untreated celiac disease also may lead to the development of other autoimmune disorders like type 1 diabetes and multiple sclerosis.
Parents of young children know that getting kids to brush their teeth can sometimes feel like pulling teeth. Kids have a long history of disliking dental care, which can frustrate parents who know the importance and long-lasting benefits of proper dental hygiene. While many youngsters may never excitedly run to the bathroom to brush their teeth, parents can try various approaches to get kids to embrace proper dental care. Start early. Parents should not hesitate to begin cleaning kids’ teeth once the first tooth appears. The earlier dental care is part of a child’s routine, the more likely he or she is to accept it as part of everyday life. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends using a softbristled brush with a small head. Ideally, use a toothbrush designed for infants, brushing teeth once per day at bedtime. The AAPD advises taking kids to visit a pediatric dentist when the first tooth appears, or no later than the child’s first birthday. Make it a group effort. Young children love to imitate their parents’ actions and behaviors, and moms and dads can use that adoration to their advantage when trying to get kids to brush their teeth. Brush teeth together as a family, making it seem like an enjoyable twice-daily activity. Get down on kids’ level and show them how to brush. If kids are resistant, engage them in conversation while brushing so they don’t even realize they’re cleaning away. Involve kids in choosing their dental care products. While parents should be mindful of the type of toothbrush their children use, always sticking with products recommended by their child’s pediatric dentist, let youngsters choose their toothbrush and toothpaste. Kids might prefer a particular flavor of toothpaste, and a colorful toothbrush with a favorite film or television character might make kids more enthusiastic and less fussy about brushing. Compliment kids after positive dental appointments. When pediatric dentist appointments go well, compliment children and express your pride in them for taking dental hygiene as seriously as they do.
The intestinal damage from eating gluten often causes diarrhea, fatigue, weight loss, bloating, and anemia, and can lead to serious complications. Following a strict gluten-free diet can help manage symptoms and promote intestinal healing.

More companies are producing glutenfree foods and stores are carrying them in greater numbers. In addition, there are a number of new baking flours available that provide alternatives to traditional wheat-based formulas. People with celiac disease or gluten intolerances can use these specially designed flours to make homemade items. Certain flours also may be billed as one-to-one alternatives, meaning they can be substituted for traditional flour in recipes without adjusting the measurements.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Paraplegic Battles UTIs ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a paraplegic due to a spinal cord injury back in 1979. I battle one UTI after another, and I am becoming immune to most antibiotics. Why the constant infections? My urologist just ordered a CT scan, but seems uninterested in me as a patient. I am sick of being sick. I straight catheterize four times a day usually. It’s getting very hard for them to match the antibiotic to the culture. At times the infections are so bad I get “foggy headed.” These times I am in misery. The last time I went to the ER hoping it wasn’t sepsis. They gave me antibiotics. I can’t keep running to the ER. My copays are too much. Maybe I need a doctor who specializes in working with people who have a spinal cord injury. -- Anon. ANSWER: Regular drainage of the bladder with a “straight catheter” is the most effective way to reduce the risk of urine infections in a person with a spinal cord injury, but it is not perfect. People may still get bacteria in the bladder. Although it may be worthwhile to review your catheterization technique with an expert, it’s possible to get infections even with perfect technique. You haven’t become immune to antibiotics, but the frequent use of powerful antibiotics will make you colonized with resistant bacteria, so that if you do get an infection, it’s likely to be with a difficult-totreat organism. The CT scan is a good idea to see whether there is an anatomic reason for recurrent (or persistent) infections. I am disappointed to hear your urologist does not seem to be doing his or her best for you. Recurrent infections are dangerous. Becoming foggy headed is a sign of serious systemic infection, and sepsis (a dysfunctional body response to infection) is life-threatening. Some people take antibiotics to prevent infection. Often, these are rotated to reduce resistance. A urologist experienced in spinal cord injury, perhaps in consultation with an infectious disease doctor, would be ideal.

Golisano Foundation Awards Additional Funds to Wyoming County SPCA BY MARCIA HUDSON
PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Why the U.S. Ban on Dog Imports?
A
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’ve been
“Kitty Nursery” will soon be installed at the Wyoming County SPCA, thanks to a $5,000 Golisano Foundation grant through Bailey and Friends, a division of the Golisano Foundation. According to Julie Long, President WCSPCA, the grant partially funds the purchase of the nursery. Total cost of the unit is $6,151. The SPCA will announce a fund-raising event to pay for the balance of the cost. “The nursery will provide a safe place for the tiniest of kittens—those under three to four weeks old— until they are sturdy enough and steady enough to be safe in a conventional housing unit. The unit follows what’s known as a ‘Fear Free’ design, with soft closures, vertical bars on the doors and warm fiberglass construction. This design will give the mother and babies a quiet, comfortable place for the babies to begin their journey through life,” elaborated Long. The organization has approved the final drawings, and plans to have the completed nursery delivered by September of this year. Remarkably, this winter many animals found their forever homes, largely because COVID stay-at-home mandates gave homebound families more time at home to train and care for a pet. Currently however, the shelter is at maximum capacity with kittens and adult cats that are ready for adoption now and in the future. The shelter, which has been open by appointment during COVID, is now open for walk in visits Thursdays 1-4 PM and Saturday 1-4 PM and other afternoons by appointment. In order to serve the public better the shelter is currently seeking afternoon volunteers in order to have two staffers in the center during open hours. If you wish to volunteer with WCSPCA, apply online at www.wyomingcountyspca.org. The shelter is located at 808 Creek Road in Attica. The grant from Bailey and Friends will help Wyoming County SPCA fund the resources needed to maintain the high standards of safety and care for its animals, particularly critical now, as this time of year is the season for newborn kittens. Bailey and Friends, named for Tom Golisano’s rescue dog Bailey, is dedicated to supporting animal welfare in Western New York and Southwest Florida. This new initiative, launched in 2019, is committed to working with shelters, rescue groups, veterinary clinics and other lifesaving programs to promote wellness, ensure safety and keep family and pets together. Wyoming County SPCA, founded in 1905, is funded solely by donations, fundraisers and grants. It is the only shelter in Wyoming County that has the capacity to house and care for both dogs and cats and the only shelter that spays or neuters and microchips all animals before they leave the facility. WCSPCA is a non-profit organization operated largely by volunteers.

working for months to purchase a purebred dog located in Ukraine. Today, the transaction was put on hold by the breeder, who said that dog imports are being banned by the U.S. What is going on? -- Nadiya in NYC DEAR NADIYA: What happened is that dogs are being imported into the U.S. with rabies certificates that are fraudulent. After at least 450 imported dogs were found to have fake certificates, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention took action in June and temporarily banned the import of dogs from more than 100 countries* with a high rabies risk, including Ukraine, for at least one year. According to the CDC’s official notice, in 2020 it identified a significant increase in the number of imported dogs that were denied entry into the U.S. from high-risk countries. Due to reduced flight schedules, dogs denied entry are facing longer wait times to be returned to their country of departure, leading to illness and even death. Why did the number of fraudulent rabies certificates rise so quickly? In a word, the pandemic. During lockdown, demand for dogs (and cats) soared. Worried about the risk of animals being abandoned when their owners went back to the office, many shelters drastically raised fees and other requirements for adoption. Demand for imported dogs rose. Unfortunately, there are no options for those who intend to purchase or adopt a dog from one of these countries. If you try to import the dog anyway, or even hand-carry it across the border, it will be denied entry and shipped back home at your expense. It’s a bummer, but necessary to reduce the risk of rabies spreading in the U.S. *For a map showing banned countries, go to www.statista.com and search for “CDC bans dog imports.” To read the official notice, go to www.cdc.gov and search for “high-risk dog ban.” Send your tips, comments and questions to ask@pawscorner.com.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
No, Life Has Not Returned to Normal A recent survey concluded that we seniors are ready to go back out into the world, to resume our former pre-COVID activities. I suspect the poll questions weren’t asked of seniors in my part of New England. We are not, for the most part, ready to get back to what we were doing before. We learned to talk to family and friends on internet conferences and managed the software quite well. We explored new hobbies with materials that arrived by mail since we weren’t going into stores. We mastered complicated recipes (with ingredients picked up curbside at the grocery), and we renewed our interest in chess and other games, playing online. We explored parts of our state we hadn’t seen before because we could safely drive around -- as long as we didn’t get out of the car. Our senior center is still holding the men’s Monday lunch in the parking lot, socially distanced, of course. The French language class still isn’t meeting because it didn’t work out well trying to hear and speak French while spaced out across the parking lot with cars going by. The art classes are still done remotely because it’s difficult to do watercolor painting outside with the breeze blowing, and no one is ready to go inside the building. A few fast phone calls revealed that, no, the American Legion hall still isn’t open. The auto dealership is trying to restrict potential buyers to test driving only three cars because each one has to be sanitized after customers take one out for a spin. The deli on Main Street is still taking orders only at the front window and doesn’t know when it will open for indoor eating. If a poll were done here, I suspect it would conclude that, no, we’re not ready to come out yet. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Keep a pretty basket by your front door for anything you need to take along when you leave. This can be store returns, backpacks, exercise gear for the gym, your sunglasses, whatever. When you leave the house, check the basket! * “Necklaces can be stored together without tangling if you thread each one through a straw. You can cut the straw to a shorter length for choker-length necklaces or bracelets. No knots!” -- I.A. in Arizona * If you have a little bit of touchup paint left in your gallon can, transfer it to a mason jar. Write the exact color and brand on the lid, and it will be much easier to store. * “Our basement was dark and a little claustrophobic. My husband painted it a lovely sunny yellow and that helped, but it needed something else. I took a photo of the spectacular view at our son’s house in Montana, and had the photo blown up. We mounted it on the wall with some dummy curtains! It’s perfect, and it reminds me of him.” -- R.W. in New York

Bravo, Teachers! I would like to recognize Alexander CSD teachers, essential staffing and all employees for the amazing job done during a challenging and uncertain school year resulting from COVID. Without your dedication and flexibility, our children would have suffered. Your efforts do not go unrecognized by the community. Thank you for all you do for the children! E. W.
Regarding a recently published article regarding proper display of the flag— I have some additional information to add to that. The flag should not be displayed at night unless lighted, nor should it be displayed during “inclement weather.” The flag should be properly disposed of when damaged or worn out (contact your Legion for details). The entire code is available on the American Legion website. Also, no drawings should be done on the US flag. This, to me, includes the superimposing of various images, animals, sports insignia, human portraits, etc. Also, personally, the use of the flag as a political statement and changing the colors on the flag is disrespectful. This is not the flag for which millions have made the ultimate sacrifice. If one wishes to show support for another organization, all of them have insignia that could be displayed on a plain banner.
Petty Rant Shame on you for your rant against our law enforcement officers. Those parking laws are in place in case of a fire or terrorism incident, and it doesn’t matter if the building is vacant. Do you think our police officers can choose which laws to enforce and when to enforce them? It’s all about public safety. Be a good citizen and follow the rules.
Neighbor’s Noisy Truck In the [local] area we have a neighbor with his very large truck that he revs out loudly on purpose and goes down the road all hours of the day and night. It’s extremely loud, and we are all afraid someone will get hit eventually. Everyone complains, but it just goes on and on. Please be considerate of your neighbors. The village is not the place for the noise or speeding, especially when you are by a school.
Hamlin Post Office I want to say that I appreciate the attention and service I get from the employees when I go in for my stamps. Sherry was kind enough to put my stamps in a large plastic sleeve to keep my five books of stamps together. It really came in handy with the large number of stamps that I purchased. With all that is going on in the world we live in, it is always nice to be treated kindly. Hamlin Post Office is the best!

GET ON THE FAST TRACK TO BEING ORGANIZED • Keep a cleanup bin handy. Put an empty basket in a central location, using it to gather stray items scattered around main living areas. Once everything has been collected, items can be returned to their rightful place. • Make the bed. One of the easiest ways to keep a room looking neat is to make the bed each day. Store clean linens in a pillow case so the entire set is together and ready to go. • Purge closets and cabinets. There’s no point allowing old, stained or damaged items to take up space. Set aside days to clear expired medication from the bathroom cabinet, discard ripped or ill-fitting clothing from the closet, or to dispose of broken toys in a nursery. • Write things down. Tasks seem more manageable when they are written down in black-and-white and can be crossed off as completed. Writing things down also helps make the mind feel more organized. • Exercise caution before buying. Don’t buy more than you need; otherwise, you’ll have to find space for extra items. Also, keep inventory of food and supplies in the house so you’re not unwittingly buying duplicates. • Sort mail and paperwork. Establish different categories for papers so they can be sorted and discarded as needed. These may include bills, invitations, school papers, and junk mail. Reduce paper clutter by opting for digital correspondence when possible. • Make one repair at a time. Tackle that source of stress by focusing on one repair and seeing it through to completion. • Delegate the work. If kids want to help organize, let them. It can be a fun project for an adolescent to rearrange the pantry or offer their ideas for corralling messes.

DISCOUNTS AVAILABLE TO THE OVER 50 CROWD: Movie tickets: The cost of going to the movies has skyrocketed in recent years, as today’s theaters now offer an array of amenities and, thanks to bigger screens and better technology, a better viewing experience than the theaters the over-50 crowd grew up visiting. While film lovers may need to wait until they turn 60 to cash in on discount movie tickets, many chain movie theaters offer discounted tickets to older patrons.

Roller coasters are a staple of amusement parks, and even though the first patent for a roller coaster was issued to LaMarcus Thompson in 1885, it’s believed modern roller coasters descended from winter sled rides made popular in the 17th century in St. Petersburg, Russia. Called “Russian Mountains,” these thrill rides took place on icy hills that may have reached as high as 200 feet in the air.

JOBS FOR STUDENTS PROFICIENT IN MATH Engineer: Mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering and civil engineer go hand-in-hand with math. Engineers in various fields perform a host of tasks, including designing equipment and evaluating the adaptability of materials.
The number of women entering the professional fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is slowly growing around the world, but there is still a sizable gender gap in these professions. According to the College Board, which produces many standardized tests, only 27 percent of all students taking the AP Computer Science exam in the United Science are women. Similarly, just 18 percent of American computerscience degrees are attained by females. However, this is not the case elsewhere in the world. A paper by Gijsbert Stoet and David Geary published in Psychological Science noted that women who live in countries with traditionally higher gender inequality tend to choose STEM professions more readily. Algeria, for example, has one of the highest ratios of women in STEM professions, at 41 percent. Stoet and Geary surmise that women in these countries may be choosing careers with the strongest path to financial independence. According to a U.S. Department of Education report, students studying science or math in college have a higher employment rate and salary than other majors after graduation. STEM majors typically earn an average of $15,500 more annually than nonSTEM majors. Engineering and engineering technology tends to pay the most. Women eager to secure competitive, stable and well-paying jobs should carefully consider the opportunities available to them in STEM fields.
