DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Yesterday, our beloved corgi mix, Shemp, was laid to rest. I feel so guilty. He passed from heatstroke after being out in the backyard for just one hour. I never realized that just the heat outdoors could be deadly to dogs. I always was conscientious about dangerous situations; I never once left Shemp in a hot car or walked him on hot sidewalks. Yet a few minutes of inattention, and my Shemp was suddenly in great distress. I rushed him to the veterinarian, but he just didn’t make it. Please warn your readers to keep their dogs inside on hot days and to monitor them closely for signs of heat stress. -- Devastated in Houston

Dear Devastated: I am so sorry for the loss of your beloved Shemp. Thank you for warning other readers of the dangers of summer heat. Being outdoors during the extreme temperatures that we’ve experienced this summer, often passing 100 degrees in many states, is dangerous for dogs and other pets. Here are a few ways to keep them

safe from heat injury. -- Walk dogs before sunrise and after sunset. Under a hot sun, sidewalks can quickly burn a dog’s paws, and heat and humidity can take a toll on their health. -- Do not leave pets outside unsupervised. Even if they’re just in the backyard, you might not notice their distress until it’s too late. -- Provide a shelter from the sun. A shelter with open sides and a solid top allows airflow and protects from the sun when your dog is outside. -- Make water available all day, everywhere. Carry water on walks, keep their indoor bowl full and provide a water bowl outside.

RECOGNIZE SIGNS OF HEAT STROKE IN DOGS What are the symptoms of heat stroke? Dogs that are overheating and potentially suffering from heat stroke may exhibit a number of symptoms. Such symptoms are typically easy to spot, but dog owners still must pay close attention to their four-legged friends during summertime walks or play sessions in the backyard. According to the American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation, signs that a dog is overheating include: panting followed by disorientation and fast, noisy breathing, collapsing or convulsing, bright red or blue gums, vomiting and diarrhea. Vomit and diarrhea connected to heat stroke may contain blood. In addition, the eyes of dogs suffering from heat stroke may be glazed-over and such dogs may be unresponsive to commands, or their replies to commands may be slower than usual.

STAY SAFE WHEN SELLING YOUR CAR Millions of people across the globe sell their used vehicles each year, and many of those sales go smoothly. But selling to strangers carries some risk, and sellers must consider their safety when putting their vehicles up for sale. Arrange to meet prospective buyers in public. While it can be inconvenient to drive to a public place each time a prospective buyer expresses interest in your vehicle, sacrificing convenience for security is worth the extra effort. Many people would not invite strangers to their homes under typical circumstances, so it makes no sense to do so when selling a vehicle. If possible, invite buyers to meet you in the parking lot of your office. Or if the car you’re selling is not the car you drive to work each day, then arrange to meet with buyers in a mall or grocery store parking lot. Meet buyers with a buddy in tow. There’s safety in numbers, so bring a friend or family member along when meeting prospective buyers. Many buyers won’t pose a threat to sellers, but some may be criminals looking to steal a vehicle or cause harm to sellers who are complete strangers. Criminals are less likely to attack or take advantage of two or more people than one person. And should anything go wrong with a sale, having a witness around to back up your version of sale terms cannot hurt. Let prospective buyers know you want to see some identification. When prospective buyers respond to your ad, let them know you will want to see some valid photo identification before you allow them to take the car for a test drive. Letting prospective buyers know this in advance of meeting them can prevent an awkward, potentially confrontational situation when you meet in person. Don’t be afraid to turn away buyers who seem suspicious. While your goal might be to sell your vehicle as quickly as possible, don’t hesitate to turn away prospective buyers who make you feel uneasy. If they insist on seeing the vehicle, hang up the phone after informing them you intend to contact the authorities. Vacations don’t have to be taxing. Cut down on some of the stressful aspects of traveling by simplifying and delegating tasks.

Most commercial products use odor as a deterrent, like sound which can be used as a deterrent, but over time they just get used to it. The same goes for motion activated sprinklers. They work well initially; then the deer get used to
the sound and to getting sprayed. I do like them though because they use a couple different senses to deter them, and it’s water, so the environment benefits from it. If you are at the point of giving up, build a deer fence or choose plants that they don’t prefer like daffodils. Both are methods gardeners choose to protect their plants from deer.

HOW TO HEAL FROM MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES THAT AROSE DURING THE PANDEMIC Embrace healthy behaviors. During the pandemic, many individuals, even those devoted to healthy living prior to 2020, found it difficult to continue engaging in behaviors and activities that promoted their overall health. Embracing these behaviors, which can include eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly and getting sufficient sleep, improves individuals’ ability to cope with stress. Re-establishing old routines also can return a sense of structure to daily life that might have gone missing over the last two years.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the American Cancer Society, the average age at the time of diagnosis of testicular cancer is
National Award Winning Paper
33. Young and middle-aged men are the most likely to be diagnosed with testicular cancer, though the ACS notes that 14 percent of cases occur in children, teens and men over the age of 55. The ACS estimates that roughly 440 men will die of testicular cancer in 2021. Though that’s troubling, testicular cancer can usually be treated successfully. In fact, the ACS notes that a man’s lifetime risk of dying from the disease is one in 5,000. However, the incidence rate of testicular cancer has been increasing in many countries, including the United States, for several decades. The reasons for that are unknown, though the rise in incidences underscores the need for men, especially young men, to discuss testicular cancer, including its risk factors and symptoms, with their physicians.

Gift auctions are a fun way to raise money for good causes. Organizing a gift auction requires a team of dedicated volunteers. * Establish the event date and venue. Before any gifts can be collected, set the date for the auction and secure a location. The location should be large enough to display all of the prizes. A school gymnasium or the party room of a firehouse or fraternal lodge may suffice. The date and time should be convenient for adult participants, as gift auctions are often to events that cater to adults. * Enlist day-of-event volunteers. Volunteers willing to work during the event can carry the prizes to the winning bidders and answer any questions guests might have throughout the auction.

HOW TO ROAD TRIP IN AN ELECTRIC CAR Find some RV parks along your route. RVs have required charging stations for years, so RV parks typically have these stations available for a nominal fee of around $50. RVs typically are Level 2, so EV drivers that require Level 2 charging systems should be able to charge their vehicles at RV parks. In addition, many RV parks now also provide charging stations for Level 1 vehicles, though drivers should confirm which parks have such offerings prior to embarking on their trips.

LEARNING GOLF CAN BE GOOD FOR YOUR CAREER (NAPSI)—Many women, looking to advance in their careers, have found the grass is always greener—on the golf course. As golf remains an important piece of business culture, it is important to empower women to feel confident on the course. Just knowing the basics of the game could encourage participation in key business decisions taking place on the course every day. Why Play Golf Consider these stats and facts from the Professional Golfers Association: • Executives who play golf make 17 percent more than those who don’t. • 54 percent of business professionals see golf as the perfect networking tool.
UNITED STATES ATTORNEYS GENERAL
• An estimated 90 percent of Fortune 500 CEOs play golf. • Sandra Day O’Connor, Cameron Diaz, Vera Wang, Celine Dion and Condoleezza Rice are all avid golfers. • Golf challenges women to go beyond their comfort zone for personal enrichment and a feeling of accomplishment and confidence. • Playing golf with someone gives you insights into his or her integrity, sportsmanship and personality. Empowering Women to Learn Golf: Lexus Teams Up With the MGA The best way to learn the game is in a supportive stress-free environment, such as a local clinic. Lexus recently hosted clinics throughout the tristate area with the Metropolitan Golf Association to help women gain the basic skills needed to get on the course. (Keep an eye out next season because they plan to host more in spring 2019.) It is important to look for clinics like the Lexus “Introduction to Golf” events that start simple and focus on basics like putting and chipping. You’ll also want an intimate clinic, so you get the one-on-one attention you need as a beginner. If a local pro will be there to speak to the group, even better! It’s great to gain inspiration from those who live and breathe the game. Golf experts such as former LPGA Tour player Tara Fleming; Liz Caron, a member of the winning 2004 U.S. Curtis Cup Team; and Kyla Basso, a highly talented amateur golfer, were present at the Lexus-hosted clinics. Among their advice: 1. Don’t let yourself be intimidated when you step onto the course with clients or colleagues—you’ll do better if you remain confident and calm. 2. Allow yourself time to become familiar with the sport. 3. Don’t expect to be a pro from day one. With a little practice and hard work, you’ll be reaping the benefits of golf in no time!

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Discounts on Phone and Internet Have you heard of Lifeline? Started many years ago to help low-income individuals with their phone costs, it’s been expanded to include internet at home, offering a $9.25 monthly discount. That $9.25 savings doesn’t sound like much, but if you’re like me, nowadays, you’re converting every dollar saved into food. That $9.25, for example, could turn into a loaf of bread and a gallon of milk, or even a pound of ground beef, a package of hamburgers buns and most of a can of beans. You’ll need to qualify for Lifeline. One way you do that is if you (or anyone in your household) receive benefits from Supplemental Security Income, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, veterans pensions, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Medicaid and others, or through having verifiable low income. (You’ll need paperwork to prove it.) You can sign up in a number of ways, such as by mail or online at nv.fcc. gov/lifeline. Scroll through the information on that page. Call 800-2349473 for more information or to ask that an application be sent to you by mail. But there’s more. In addition, if you qualify for Lifeline, you likely also qualify for an even bigger assistance: the Affordable Connectivity Program. ACP is new and can give you a $30 monthly discount on your internet. Once you’re in the Lifeline program, call your internet provider and enroll in ACP with them. There’s no need to fill out another application. There are hundreds of internet providers that are part of the program, including some big names like Xfinity, AT&T and Spectrum. In some cases, that $30 gets you internet without you having to pay anything additional. In other words, free internet. Get the details from your internet provider. For a list of providers by state, go to www.fcc.gov/affordable-connectivity-program-providers. Get more information on the Affordable Connectivity Program at www.fcc.gov/acp or call 877-384-2575. TAKING THE PAIN OUT OF LIVE EVENT MANAGEMENT (NAPSI)—Anyone involved in running a theater, festival, or a sporting or live music event knows all too well the difficulty of doing it on your own. Some event managers turn to third parties like Eventbrite or Ticketmaster to get help with critical ticket sales, but one of the biggest pain points is finding an effective ticketing solution that supports their brand. When ticketing, marketing, fundraising and donation activities are not synchronized, event managers spend more time managing their business rather than the event itself. This leads to lost profits and angry patrons. Rick Blair, co-founder of Artisan Center Theater in Hurst, TX, went through years of trying different ticket brokers to increase sales, but was put off by the high fees and lack of personal attention. He also found that the solutions he tried did not work well with his other tools. “I had separate platforms for ticketing, marketing, website updates and donor management. None of them talked to each other and the entire process was a mess,” he said. Two years ago, he discovered the Vendini ticketing platform. Now the theater has an all-in-one system to handle VIP alerts and online, mobile and box office ticket sales that integrates with e-mail, social and direct marketing. By using Vendini’s Patron Connect, Blair and his team are notified when a donor is coming to the show and where they will be sitting. “When I get the alert, I can rush to my office, write a thank-you card, and slip it onto the donor’s seat before they arrive. That has resulted in many new donations because everyone appreciates a personal touch. Patron Connect is one of my most powerful marketing tools.” Vendini makes event execution simpler and faster. Event managers can create an event, specify dates and times, set pricing, and start selling tickets in minutes. Vendini’s live event management software helps managers like Blair run events more easily and effectively. Learn More: For more information, go to www.vendini.com.

Keeping Our Promise: More than a Mission Part II BY AMANDA DUDEK
K
eeping Our Promise (KOP), the most comprehensive resettlement program for Afghan, Iraqi and Kurdish interpreters and support personnel in the United States today, is a Rochester-based program which assists with initial visa applications under the Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) Program. KOP Executive Director Ellen Smith and KOP Assistant Executive Director Laurel Prothero continue the struggle to not only bring these individuals and families to safety, but also to help them resettle with a solid foundation on which to successfully rebuild their lives. After all the families have endured, it cannot be easy. The work they did, even being associated with the United States or the former Afghan government, put them in danger. When American troops were withdrawn, the more progressive government fell. “The pace at which everything happened was very quick,” said Laurel. “The families didn’t have time to adjust or make other arrangements.” Ellen agreed. “All the sudden, the president left,” she explained. “Those associated with his government knew they had to try to get out.” Muzafar* worked with the Afghan Supreme Court, creating a docket system and working for women’s and children’s legal rights in Afghanistan. For this, of course, he would be targeted by the Taliban. His wife was educated, as well. She went to dental school in Turkey and came back as a dentist. If they had stayed, he probably would have lost his life, both because of his job with the Afghan government and because he was fighting the very things the Taliban supported. KOP helped bring Muzafar and his wife to safety in the United States. KOP first connected with Vares* in 2019. On the day Kabul fell, Vares was still at work. “He messaged me and said, ‘I am being left behind,’” said Ellen. “I told him, ‘I need all of your American contacts immediately.’ I called this retired army colonel, and I said, ‘You don’t know me, and this might sound crazy, but I need a letter of recommendation to get this man out of the country.’” Vares had worked with the United States, then for Mercy Corps before going to work for the Afghan government. He had 17 ex-military people supporting him, and it was clear how much his service meant to them. Thanks to KOP, Vares and his family have been welcomed to safety. Dalir* was a TV anchor. When KOP brought him safely to the United States, his goal was to continue to work in media. He took a job indirectly related to media at first and continued to work towards his dream. “He was very focused; one of the most persistent people I’ve met in a lot of ways, and he just really made it happen,” said Laurel. Now, Dalir is working for a local TV station. “His coworkers seem to love him, and he is very passionate about his work,” she continued. “It is amazing to see someone’s dream come true, to see how the supports we provide set them up to achieve.” Unfortunately, there are still thousands of individuals and families waiting to leave Afghanistan. Tareq* worked for an army captain who was from south of Rochester. Tareq was a journalist and was present during an airport bombing. The army captain called Ellen. “I had to get clothing descriptions for everyone in his family because I had to describe everything to identify them,” she recalled. “I even had them wave a brightly colored piece of clothing.” Unfortunately, Tareq’s passport was expired, and his father and youngest child did not have a passport. Now, finally, Tareq’s family all have their passports so they can travel to Qatar. They are still waiting in Afghanistan.

“Our Afghan families are stuck,” said Ellen. One Afghan gentleman told KOP, “It is really bad, worse than you can imagine. My family is fine, but the Taliban is now ordering young women to marry their fighters.” “I found the news article,” confirmed Ellen. “What do you say to that?” KOP plans to continue its efforts. “We rely on private donors to do what we are doing,” said Ellen. “The goal is to give these people a foundation through caring circles, a phone, a computer, eventually Wheels to Work. The issues are complicated. We can’t turn back time, but we can help these families.” “Our next steps will continue to be helping these people to come to this resettlement project in Rochester, creating continued support through community and policy, and to continue to bring the Afghans into our volunteering process,” added Laurel. There are many ways to support KOP, from helping with donation pickups to fixing furniture to participating in Caring Circles to donating funds or necessary home furnishings. KOP also encourages readers to call their Congress members, asking them to support the Afghan Adjustment Act which would allow certain Afghan evacuees to apply for permanent status after one year of being paroled into the U.S. Supporting these evacuees is the least we can do. “They are good people,” said Ellen. “They are coming in with skill sets and ready to work. They are running the clock all the way around, trying to rebuild their lives and take care of their families.”
“They lost their families, their country, and risked their lives.”
“They lost their families, their country, and risked their lives,” said Laurel, noting that U. S. military members are KOP’s biggest allies. “These people kept the United States safe, informed, and engaged. There is nothing more patriotic than helping them.” *Names have been changed for privacy. Enjoy this article? Check out this week’s other great stories online at www.gvpennysaver.com: • •

Fu n Fac t What is the meaning of ‘take a penny/leave a penny?’ The words ‘take a penny, leave a penny’ refer to the tray, dish, cup, or other container found in local stores, gas stations, and other places, where customers can leave or take coins for cash transactions, as required. ‘Take a Penny/Leave a Penny' can also be applied to a bigger picture, with 'penny' representing kind deeds and words. A person 'leaving a penny' is spreading good vibes all around, while someone 'taking a penny' is benefiting from another's goodwill. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

COMMON CAUSES OF TOOTHACHES
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
TMJ: Temporomandibular disorders can cause tooth pain. TMJ may result from injury or trauma to the jaw. Tooth grinding, also known as bruxism, can cause tooth pain.
By Keith Roach, M.D.
Smoking, Symptoms Biggest Factors in COPD Prognosis ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I was diagnosed with COPD a year and a half ago. I seem to be unable to get answers from my pulmonary doctor, as he is always busy. How fast does COPD progress? I’m 78 years old, I’m in reasonably good health, and I exercise regularly. I have chronic bronchitis with a slight amount of emphysema. I had been coughing a little during the day, had mucus in the morning and coughed at night for two to three hours after bedtime -- to the extent of having to use a rescue inhaler to settle down and get back to sleep. After he put me on Trelegy, all of those symptoms disappeared, and I feel perfectly normal except for shortness of breath. My other question is, what is the life expectancy of a person diagnosed with COPD? I’ve read answers to this all over the map, from two or three years after diagnosis to 15 or more years. I would presume that it depends on other factors such as physical condition, exercise, weight, etc. I would like some kind of guideline for someone in my condition. -- T.J. ANSWER: There are two major types of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: chronic bronchitis, where the primary problem is productive cough; and emphysema, which is destruction of the small airways. Shortness of breath is a common feature of all types of COPD. The most prevalent cause is smoking. I can’t answer your questions on rate of progression and overall prognosis without much more information, but it is certainly a good sign that many of your symptoms are well-controlled on treatment. The single biggest factor in rate of progression of COPD is whether you are a smoker, but not being able to exercise, being male and being very underweight are additional risk factors for faster progression. In someone with COPD, the decline over months to years can cause symptoms to occur first with exercise, and then when at rest. Once people have severe symptoms at rest, the prognosis becomes quite poor. No medication can reverse lung damage. Inhaled steroids reduce inflammation and can slow progression somewhat. Inhaled bronchodilators open airways and make breathing easier. Inhaled anticholinergics reduce secretions. Trelegy contains all of these medicines and is appropriate for people with severe COPD or those who do not have good symptom control with a less intensive regimen. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2022 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

ADVICE FOR BLOOD DONORS Unlike other marvels of modern medicine, quality blood is an important health component that cannot be created synthetically. Blood shortages continue to plague medical establishments across the globe. For those who require transfusions, blood from volunteer donors can be the difference between life and death. However, many people are apprehensive about donating blood because of their own unique fears of the unknown or from past poor experiences with the process. With a little knowledge and some preparation, donating blood can be made much easier. Confirming donors’ health: One of the first steps to donating blood is to determine donors’ eligibility. Potential donors undergo a short health screening and are asked various questions to determine their eligibility. The presence of certain illnesses or other disqualifications helps ensure that the blood will be healthy and that the blood drawn will not have a negative effect on the donor. The American Red Cross states that potential donors will undergo a pin prick on the finger to test for iron levels in their blood. This is to ensure that donors will not be made anemic from giving blood. Frequency of donation, weight and age also will be considered before prospective donors are allowed to donate blood. Many organizations urge prospective donors to avoid giving blood if they have had simple dental work done within 24 hours or major dental work in the past month. Dental work in general can dislodge bacteria, which can get into the blood stream and cause systemic infection. Preparing to donate: Potential donors are urged to eat a healthy diet full of iron-rich foods. It is adviseable to drink an extra 16 ounces of water or a nonalcoholic fluid prior to donating. A healthy, low-fat meal prior to donating also is recommended, as the Red Cross says fatty foods can adversely affect blood tests that check for infectious diseases, and the blood may not be used as a result. Needles are no big deal: According to Justin Kreuter, MD, medical director of the Mayo Clinic Blood Donor Center in Rochester, Minnesota, while the needles used to collect blood are slightly larger than those used for immunizations at the doctor’s office, the needles have silicone on them to make the process of donating more comfortable for donors. Donation duration: Donating blood does not take a long time. It may take between 15 and 20 minutes for donation center workers to extract blood. Donating plasma or platelets may require more time. Allocate at least an hour to undergo the medical exam and to rest after the donation. Post-donation: Donors are urged to rest for a few minutes after the donating and to enjoy the snacks and beverages being offered. The Red Cross says people should avoid performing any heavy lifting or vigorous exercise for the rest of the day after donating. It’s also adviseable to drink an extra four glasses of liquids and avoid alcohol during the day following a donation. Donating blood can save lives and reassure donors that they’re doing their part to help others. Page 17

By Lucie Winborne * “Prison Inside Me” is a hotel of sorts in South Korea where people pay to be locked away in solitary confinement for 24 hours. “Jail mates” wear matching uniforms, sleep on the floor in 54-square-foot cells and are forbidden to speak to each other. Meals are minimal -- a steamed sweet potato and banana shake for dinner and rice porridge for breakfast. Like any good getaway, the prison stay comes with a souvenir: a certificate of parole upon completing one’s stint in solitary confinement! ●

DID YOU KNOW? The terms “hospice” and “palliative” are not interchangeable. Hospice care is a form of palliative care geared toward patients with terminal illnesses facing their final months or weeks of life. Palliative care, according to WebMD, aims to ease pain and provide help to people confronting a serious illness, even if it’s not necessarily life-threatening. Palliative care may include assistance for those with cancer, kidney disease, multiple sclerosis, or any number of conditions. Illnesses can make it difficult to live life fully, and palliative care is used in conjunction with other treatments to improve quality of life. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

RAVES Big Thank You A big thank you to the civic minded person who gave money for a new American flag! We are looking good at Little Lakes Community Center! Thanks to the person who donated money for our new flag and the landscape volunteers who spread 75 bags of mulch and cleaned up the flower beds! Thanks for the dog bags! Thank you to the person that put dog poop bags on my porch with a note. I must’ve missed one while walking more than one dog! Sorry if my pup ruined your green grass. I know how much you love dogs! Livingston Murals Not only do I enjoy seeing all the new murals when driving into work, but love the uniqueness behind each design and that they are all painted by local aspiring muralists. I hope to stop by them all sometime soon.
Pedestrian Crosswalks I think it’s time for some driver education. Drivers don’t seem to know that pedestrians have the right of way at these crosswalks. I watched a little boy on [local road] trying to cross at a marked crosswalk at this intersection. Nobody stopped to let him cross. I was waiting to make a right turn onto [local road], waiting until this little boy safely crossed. The driver behind me was honking angrily. Finally, an adult male came to his rescue and made sure he crossed safely. I see this law being broken all the time. Disrespect I do not understand the disrespect in today’s world. My husband was not a Veteran, but he was always very patriotic. He passed away a few years ago. He loved pinwheels, seeing them blowing in the wind. I found a large 16” red, white, and blue pinwheel with white polka dots, which was 36” tall and placed it at his grave for the last two years. It did not cost a lot of money but was worth millions in memories to my family. It disappeared! There was no windstorm to pull it 10” out of the ground and blow it away. And nothing else in the whole cemetery was disturbed. So, I know someone took it! I hope every time you look at it you remember where you got it and how you got it. Such disrespect stealing from a grave! We all share the Canal! We always love seeing other boats enjoying the Canal when we kayak from [local town] to [local town] and back, but we would appreciate it if power boaters slowed down when passing smaller boats and when approaching wildlife, like groups of ducks and geese, and especially those with young. What’s the rush? Slow down, enjoy the scenery, and you’ll be surprised at all of the amazing things you’ll see. We all share the Canal. Please be respectful.
Festivals are back! I love seeing all the festivals and events happening again! Of course, I understand the risk of covid-19 is still here and we should take precautions. Even if I don’t go to the events I love that we are getting back to fun this summer! From the Oatka Festival in LeRoy, to the Dansville Balloon Festival to the West Sparta OldFashioned Day and everything in-between! Disc Golf Course A few years back, the town I live in installed in a disc golf course and I cannot tell you how much we enjoy it and use it. Thank you to everyone that had a part in that. I know my family appreciates it!

THE RIGHT WAY TO UPDATE A RÉSUMÉ Put your own voice in the résumé. Rather than using standard verbiage on your résumé, personalize what you want to say. Hiring managers want to hire a human, not a machine. When speaking about yourself, be sure to use strong action words that define your skills even further. HR professionals cite terms like “managed,” “achieved” and “improved” as examples of positive, assertive words.
JOBS FOR STUDENTS PROFICIENT IN MATH Game designer: Mathematics is involved in game theory, and programmers regularly utilize trigonometry, physics and calculus. The same can be said for movie or television animators.
EFFICIENCY AT WORK People with multiple hobbies recognize there are many great ways to spend one’s time. But even people with plenty of ways to pass their time may find themselves wasting time each day, a phenomenon that seems to be growing. In its 2014 “Wasting Time at Work” survey, Salary.com found that 89 percent of participants acknowledged wasting time at work each day. That marked a sharp increase from a year prior, when 69 percent of workers surveyed reported wasting time at work. Thirty-one percent of workers surveyed admitted wasting roughly 30 minutes per day, while another 31 percent estimated they waste around one hour each day. Perhaps the most surprising finding from the survey was that 4 percent of participants admitted they waste four or more hours, or at least half a typically eight-hour workday, at work each day. Some people might be wasting time out of sheer boredom, but many may be able to trace all those squandered minutes and hours to inefficiency. EMPLOYMENT

DID YOU KNOW? According to data reported to U.S. News & World Report from 711 ranked private universities (“ranked” schools meet certain criteria established by U.S. News & World Report), the average tuition and fees for private universities during the 2015-2016 school year was $32,599. Among the schools that reported their figures to U.S. News & Report, Vassar College in New York charged the most at $51,300, narrowly exceeding another school in the Empire State, Sarah Lawrence College, which charged its students $51,034 for the 2015-2016 school year. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Berea College in Kentucky charged just $870 in tuition and fees during the 2015-2016 school year. But that extraordinarily low tuition is somewhat misleading, as Berea College provides every admitted student the equivalent of a four-year, full-tuition scholarship. American college students might be surprised to learn that the burden of college tuition is perhaps not as burdensome for students born overseas. For example, the most expensive university in England, the University of Cambridge, will charge its domestic and European Union students the maximum tuition fees allowed for the 2016-2017 school year. That translates to £9,000, or just more than $13,000, for one of the world’s most highly regarded institutions.
