INFLUENTIAL JAZZ MUSICIANS
CHECK OUR FACEBOOK PAGE FOR HOURS!
Miles Davis (1926-1991): Compared to other jazz legends, Illinois-born Miles Davis was introduced to music rather late. It wasn’t until Davis was 13 years old that his father introduced him to the trumpet, an introduction that would dramatically alter the course of jazz music. Under the tutelage of local music school director Elwood Buchanan, Davis learned to play the trumpet without vibrato, which Biography.com notes marked a departure from the style of trumpet-playing popular at the time. A true pioneer, Davis is considered one of the most influential figures in the history of jazz and 20th century music.

IT PAYS TO USE CRATES WHEN TRAINING PUPPIES Many dog owners, particularly those who have never before had a dog, may hesitate to employ crates to train their puppies. That’s understandable, as on the surface it can seem cruel or inhumane to confine a living animal to a cage. However, the AKC notes that dogs are den animals that naturally seek out canine caves for security. That’s true whether dog owners provide crates for their puppies or not. So while humans may see crates as cruel, dogs very likely view their crates as secure places where they can go if they get scared or feel skittish. In fact, according to the AKC, dogs’ perception of crates is one reason why dog owners typically find it relatively easy to get their dogs to adjust to crates and ultimately enjoy them.

DID YOU KNOW? Car buyers may find some great deals by using offered rebates. Rebates can take place at any time of the year. Dealers typically use rebates in order to clear out a particular model year. Rebates may also be offered through the manufacturer. Dealerships may sell a vehicle for less when certain incentives are applied. Shoppers can rely on Edmunds. com to search for rebates and incentives by vehicle make and geographic location.
HINTS TO HELP YOU PROTECT YOUR KIDS IN THE CAR (NAPSI)—Keeping your kids on the road to safety when in and around a car can be easier if you take these steps: What You Can Do First, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), you should look for a car with these vehicle safety features:
• Transmission & Driveline Specialists • Differentials • NYS Inspections • Complete Clutch Repair • American & Foreign • 4WD Service
• Interior trunk release
100 Day pay option available. Check out our website for more details Transmission pick up and drop off available to local shops! Call for details.
• Side-impact air bags • Advanced frontal air bags • Push-down/pull-up window switches
in Genesee & Wyoming Counties
8781 Alexander Rd. (Rt. 98), Batavia, NY 14020 • Hrs.: Mon.-Fri. 8-5
• Automatic door locks. Next, the NHTSA says, you should always remember to: 1. Use a car seat for every trip—even when you’re just going down the street. Select the car seat based on your child’s age and size, and always follow the manufacturer’s directions. Make sure it’s compatible with your vehicle by checking the car seat manufacturer’s instructions. 2. Keep kids in the backseat at least through age 12. 3. Tell children not to play around vehicles. Before getting into a vehicle, check around and behind it, as well as the surrounding area, to ensure no children are present. 4. Buckle and lock any unused seat belts to keep kids from getting tangled up in them. 5. Never leave a child unattended in a vehicle, no matter how short the stop, or what the weather is, even if the windows are cracked. The car can heat up very quickly in almost all weather conditions. Even with moderate outside temperatures in the mid-60s, a vehicle’s interior can quickly heat up to more than 110° F. In addition, if the ignition is on or the keys are in the ignition, children can accidentally cause the vehicle to roll or even drive away. What Can Help To prevent precious cargo from being left in cars, one company has come up with an ingenious Rear Door Alert (RDA) technology. An industry first, the system was developed by two mothers who are also engineers at Nissan. It monitors when the rear door is opened and closed before and after the vehicle is in motion. The system responds with a series of notifications if a rear door was used prior to a trip but was not reopened after the trip. Once the vehicle is in park and the ignition is turned off, the system will first display a notification in the instrument panel and progresses to distinctive chirps of the horn to remind drivers to check the backseat.

www.landltransmissions.com SAFETY IN NUMBERS: WHY IT PAYS TO REPLACE HEADLIGHT BULBS IN PAIRS Why replace bulbs two at a time? In an effort to promote the importance of changing headlight bulbs two at a time, Philips developed the “Change In Pairs” safety campaign, which aims to educate motorists about the dangers of dimming lights while promoting the many reasons that changing bulbs in pairs makes the road safer for all travelers. To support this safety initiative, Philips also packages its Upgrade Headlight Bulbs in pairs. Though replacing two headlight bulbs when only one is dimming may seem unwarranted, maintaining a consistent light output in both headlights makes the road safer for drivers, their passengers and oncoming motorists. When only one bulb is replaced, the resulting light output can be both unbalanced and unpredictable, providing inadequate lighting that can compromise driver visibility. In addition, oncoming motorists may experience difficulty seeing vehicles with just one headlight operating at full capacity, and some may even mistake oncoming cars and trucks for motorcycles, creating positioning issues for drivers on both sides of the yellow line.
Nissan’s RDA is easy to configure and can be temporarily or permanently turned off through a menu in the cluster display. Already available in the Nissan Pathfinder, for model year 2019, RDA will be standard equipment on eight other Nissan cars, including the best-selling Rogue and the all-new Altima. By model year 2022, it will be standard on all the company’s four-door trucks, sedans and SUVs. Learn More: For further information, go to www.NissanUSA.com and www.NHTSA.gov. AUTOMOTIVE

STAY COOL THIS SUMMER WHILE LIMITING ENERGY CONSUMPTION Install ceiling fans. Cool people in a given room by installing ceiling fans in areas of the home that might be warm but not too hot during the summertime. Modern ceiling fans with the ENERGY STAR® logo can be as much as 75 percent more efficient than older models, and ceiling fans typically consume far less energy than air conditioners. Install fans that can rotate forward and in reverse, as the direction the fan is rotating can actually heat or cool a room. Why does my maple tree have black spots on its leaves, and they are progresses. Small, black, tar-like raised dropping all over my yard? structures form on the upper surface It is called maple tree tar spot disease or within these yellow spots. The black spots Rhytismataceae. Coccomyces dentatus continue to grow in diameter and thickness is a species of fungus in the family to the point where it looks like someone Rhytismataceae. A widespread species, splashed tar on the leaves. Symptoms tend particularly in temperate areas, it colonizes to be more common on trees growing in the dead fallen leaves of vascular plants moist, sheltered locations. Impact: This and is commonly found on oaks, chestnut disease is usually a cosmetic problem and maples. Symptoms: Tar spot is one and does not affect the long-term health of the most readily visible and easiest of the tree. Heavy infections can cause maple diseases to diagnose. It’s also one premature leaf drop – a circumstance of the least damaging ailments on its that causes great consternation to host. The first tar spot symptoms usually homeowners because lawns are littered show up in early summer as small, light- and must be raked before autumn green to yellowish-green spots. The spots typically arrives. Management: Since tar enlarge and color intensifies as summer spot fungi overwinter in fallen leaves, the
most effective management technique is to rake and destroy leaves in the fall. This will reduce the number of overwintering “spots” that can infect new leaves the following spring. Neighbors should also rake and destroy infected leaves to be effective. Mulching leaves will destroy many of the spots before they mature, but the mulch pile should be covered or turned before new leaves begin to emerge in the spring. Applications of fungicides
are possible when high levels of infection become unacceptable, but control of tar spot is challenging, especially on mature maples. In addition, if others in a neighborhood setting are not managing the disease on their trees with fungicides or proper sanitation, the act of spraying may be a waste of time and money. EXPLORING THE ORIGINS OF LABOR DAY Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summertime fun and a day when thousands of people gather across the country for their final big barbecue blowouts. Labor Day has evolved into a holiday about relaxing with friends and family, and that has led to its origins getting somewhat lost in the celebratory shuffle. Created by the labor movement in the late 19th century, Labor Day was established to highlight the achievements of American workers, both from a social and an economic perspective. Labor Day highlights one of the main benefits of being a citizen of the United States, the ability to have professional freedom and contribute to the prosperity and strength of the country through gainful employment. Labor Day became a federal holiday in 1894. Celebrated annually on the first Monday of September, it is believed that Labor Day was first promoted by the Central Labor Union and the Knights of Labor, which also organized the first labor-related parade in New York City. Although the true fathers of Labor Day remain a topic of debate, some historians maintain that Peter J. McGuire of the American Federation of Labor put forward the first Labor Day proposal in May 1882 after witnessing a labor festival in Toronto, Canada. Labor Day was largely celebrated in the past with parades, speeches and a day off of work for the country’s workers. Similar festivities occur to this day, with the gradual introduction of other events that mark the unofficial end of summer.

According to WorldAtlas.com, the largest city park in the world is Bosque de la Primavera in Guadalajara, Mexico. At 74,132 acres, Bosque de la Primavera is more than 14,000 acres larger than the world’s second largest city park, Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa. Bosque de la Primavera features the Rio Caliente, a geothermal river, and is home to a massive nature reserve inhabited by wild animals. The largest city park in the United States and fifth largest such park in the world is the McDowell Sonoran Preserve in Scottsdale, Arizona. The McDowell Sonoran Preserve includes 180 miles of hiking trails within its 27,800 acres. And while it might be one of the most recognizable city parks in the world, New York City’s Central Park is not counted among the world’s 20 largest city parks, despite estimates that it draws more than 40 million visitors each year. However, it is one of the most visited places in the United States. GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Biggest Raise in Decades for Social Security? Don’t count your money before it’s in hand, of course. But word is that the Social Security increase we see in January could be as much as 6.1%, the largest since 1983. For the average benefit recipient, currently receiving $1,543, that could amount to $94 per month. It’s a few years too late for a serious increase, but certainly better than the 1.3% bump we saw for 2021 and the 1.6% the year before. Social Security is calculated by the cost-of-living adjustment in the third quarter each year. For 2021, they calculated that a 1.3% increase should be plenty. We know that was wrong, as prices of everything had climbed. It’s all in how and what they calculate. They use the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W), which measures prices on certain goods and services. But we’re not wage earners, and we don’t work in offices. We spend our money on different things. We wonder why they don’t use the index for the elderly (CPI-E), which takes into consideration the things we do buy, such as medical care, medical services, housing and health insurance. (There’s a bill in the House of Representatives -- H.R.4315 -- to do that very thing.) We spend less than the CPI-W group on transportation, food, clothing, entertainment, education and communication. The Federal Reserve Bank did a midsummer survey on what consumers are expecting for the rest of 2021. The expectation of responders is that we’ll see a 4.8% increase on top of what we’ve already seen this year. Keep an eye on the news in October, when the rate of next year’s Social Security increase is finalized. Meanwhile start planning for next year as soon as you can. Look for savings everywhere you can find them. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Living with Atrial Fibrillation? TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Reader Seeks Alternative to Rx Antidepressant ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I suffer from depression. It comes and goes, but I’ve been feeling sad, worried and angry, as well as irritable, for the past four months or so. I force myself to function. My family doctor prescribed a 37.5 mg dose of Effexor once a day to start and after one week, twice a day. I looked up the side effects and what I read scared me. Instead, I’ve been taking 1,000 mg of St. John’s wort daily for almost three weeks, and I have noticed no discernible effect. I told my doctor I would take the Effexor after three weeks if the St. John’s wort hasn’t helped. Should I take his advice? Are there better alternatives? I am middle age and take zero prescription drugs. -- S.M. ANSWER: St. John’s wort, Hypericum perforatum, is a yellow flower that has been medicinally used for centuries. Initial studies suggested benefit in people with mild to moderate depression, and several substances in the flower have been shown to have pharmacologic effects on serotonin receptors, among other effects. However, other trials have shown it to be no better than placebo. It does have important drug interactions, fortunately not an issue for you (as long as you let the St. John’s wort wear off before starting Effexor), but for some people the potential interactions are dangerous. Side effects are not common, but include gastrointestinal upset, dizziness and confusion, fatigue, dry mouth and sexual side effects. It can make people more sensitive to sunlight, and may decrease fertility. The studies that did show a benefit lasted four to 12 weeks. It is possible you might not have had benefit from it yet, and waiting a little longer -- say another week -- wouldn’t be unreasonable to really give the St. John’s wort a chance. However, I seldom recommend this herb due to lack of consistent benefit in trials, the potential for drug interactions and a concern about poor regulation of supplements in terms of amount and purity of the ingredients. For people who want to avoid prescription medicine, I have often recommended S-adenosyl methionine (SAMe). The evidence is better and the side effects and drug interactions fewer. Effexor may be a good choice for you. Prescription antidepressants have been shown to be better than placebo, but they certainly do not work for everybody. If Effexor isn’t a good choice, there are several others. However, I would strongly recommend you consider nonpharmacologic treatment for depression whether or not you decide to take additional medication treatment. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2021 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

View all of our Body & Mind ads online at gvpennysaver.com WHAT’S YOUR ADVANCE CARE PLAN? (NAPSI) — No matter your stage of life, it’s always a good idea to have a long-range care plan in place. A good way to begin is to talk candidly with your family and friends. By starting the conversation, you can express your views on treatment, relay your care preferences and communicate who will make decisions on your behalf. This process of advance-care planning can help ensure your wishes are carried out and bring peace of mind to those you love. Build your advance care plan • Durable financial power of attorney: This document authorizes a person to make legal or financial decisions on your behalf if you are incapacitated. • Durable healthcare power of attorney: This document authorizes a person to make healthcare decisions on your behalf if you are unable to do so. • Advance-care directive: This document specifies how you receive care in the event you are unable to make those decisions on your own. • Long-term care insurance: This is an insurance product that pays for long-term care services in a variety of settings. Documents and requirements may differ by state. Please consult a legal or financial advisor to ensure use of the correct forms. Make the Federal Long Term Care Insurance Program (FLTCIP) part of your plan As you make plans for the future, consider the potential need for long-term care and the effect it could have on you and your family. Long-term care is the ongoing aid you need if you can no longer perform everyday tasks by yourself due to chronic illness, injury, disability, or the aging process. This type of care is expensive but there’s a way to get help paying for it. Applying for long-term care insurance coverage under the FLTCIP may be a smart choice for you. The FLTCIP is designed to reimburse for qualified long-term care services and can help lessen or eliminate your reliance on a loved one to provide hands-on care. The FLTCIP offers you a choice of caregivers. Informal care provided by friends and family members is covered, as long as the caregiver isn’t your spouse or domestic partner and doesn’t live in your home at the time you become eligible for benefits. (Benefits for care provided by family members is limited to 500 days.) Care provided in an assisted-living facility, an adult daycare, or a nursing home is also covered. If home care is your preference, the stay-at-home benefit includes a range of services that support care in your home, helping you maintain your quality of life in familiar surroundings. Taking the next step The FLTCIP is sponsored by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, insured by John Hancock Life & Health Insurance Company, and administered by Long Term Care Partners, LLC. Many college students are struggling to graduate without accumulating substantial student loan debt. Data compiled from Market Watch, an economy and investing resource, has found that nearly 70 percent of bachelor’s degree recipients leave school with considerable debt. It’s estimated that America’s student loan debt grows almost $3,000 per second. The Institute for College Access & Success has listed the average American student debt at $29,000. The Canadian Federation of Students lists the average debt at $27,000 for Canadian students. The burden of debt may cause graduates to accept the first job offer that comes along and/or impede their ability to buy houses or make other large purchases. Only about 40 percent of borrowers are paying down their debts after landing a job. Graduates should realize that many loans only have six-month grace periods before repayment begins. Those who feel that student loan repayment may be difficult can speak to a financial advisor to go over loan consolidation, refinancing or extending the repayment period to make monthly payments more manageable.

HOW COLLEGE STUDENTS CAN CUT LIVING EXPENSES The cost of college tuition is a concern for many college-bound students and their families. The cost of a college education continues to rise, but it’s not just tuition and room and board that students and their families must account for. College students may underestimate cost-of-living expenses when planning their school-year budgets. But such expenses can be substantial, catching even the most well-prepared students off guard. Fortunately, there are several ways for college students to save money on living expenses and still make the most of their time on campus.
STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Those apples you buy at your local market aren’t all that fresh. They’re typically plucked between August and November, then covered in wax, hot-air dried, and sent to cold storage before landing in stores six to 12 months later.

REASONS TO SHOP FARMERS’ MARKETS Foods at farmers’ markets tend to be limited to in-season offerings. Some nutritionists suggest eating seasonally available foods is better for your body, because humans ate seasonal produce for thousands of years before shipping and refrigeration changed how people received the majority of their foods. In addition, many people feel that fresh, seasonal foods taste better than the alternatives.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Aug. 29, 1942, the Red Cross reveals that Japan refused free passage of ships carrying food, medicine and other necessities for American POWs held by Japan. Japan allowed just 10% of what POWs elsewhere received.
DID YOU KNOW? Broadening one’s horizons through crafting can be a worthwhile pursuit. Crafting can serve as a relaxing pastime and provide an opportunity to learn rewarding skills. Learning to crochet is one way for men and women to combine creativity and practicality. Crochet is a form of handwork using yarn and a crochet hook. According to the Crochet Guild of America, there’s no way to know just how old the art of crochet is. However, crochet expert Annie Potter has said the modern form of the art originated in the 16th century, primarily in France and England. Others surmise crocheting traces its origins to Arabia before it spread westward through various Mediterranean trade routes.

S E V RA Lovely cemetery A big Thank You goes out to whomever lovingly cares for the Union Hill Cemetery. The monuments are trimmed around and the grounds are mowed regularly. There are no tall weeds to wade through when visiting deceased friends and family. Your efforts are very much appreciated and deserve recognition! Thanks to so many! On Sunday, August 8th, I was involved in a rollover accident on 5&20 at Bragg Street. Thanks to so many that stopped to assist: Harley rider Bill and his girlfriend; Nurse Meredith and her son; EMT Mary and others that I didn’t get their names. Your help was greatly appreciated and has renewed my faith that people are kind and good. I owe you all a beer! - Sharon K.
Updated commandment Thou shalt not steal, whilst thou hath not to giveth back. Common courtesy We’re in obvious unchartered waters these days, but for those of you who bother to apply to the many open positions and agree to an in-person interview, not show up without so much as a phone call for explanation is beyond bad manners. Please have the common courtesy and decency to at least call and say you’ve decided not to waste the would-be employer’s valuable time! A new stadium As I looked at the rendering of the new multi-billion dollar stadium, I found it hard to see any difference from the present stadium. A field, seats, luxury boxes, etc., are pretty much what we already have and have paid for. They’re even going to build the new stadium in [local town] where the team has been for years. I’m a fan, just not a fan of this new stadium when the old one is just fine.

Do Cats, Goldfish Mix? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My daughter received a goldfish for her last birthday, and true to her word, she has kept the fish healthy and happy. Now, for her 9th birthday, she wants a kitten. I feel that she’s old enough to care for a cat, but am worried that the cat will stress her goldfish. What are your thoughts? -- Judy G., Seattle

DEAR JUDY: As a parent, your instincts are important and this one is worth thinking about. Cats are fascinated with fish tanks and can often be found watching the fish inside with rapt attention -- if not actively trying to get a paw into the water. Discuss your concerns with your daughter. At age 9, she’s old enough to consider this problem as well. Is there a way for her goldfish to remain healthy and stress-free while bringing a kitten into your home? There are strategies for doing this successfully, including training that diverts a cat’s attention from the tank and placing the tank out of sight or reach of the cat. Caring for pets is a way to help children develop empathy for all living things. It can help them learn about responsibility, too -- but only when parents are actively involved in the process. You’re doing a great job of helping your daughter understand the importance of caring for pets of all kinds. Having second thoughts about bringing another pet into the house is exactly the kind of thinking parents should do. But you also have the opportunity to guide your daughter and have her be part of the decision as to whether a kitten is a good idea at this point, or whether she should wait another year. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

The George Eastman Museum receives $70,470 grant award from the National Film Preservation Foundation
T
he George Eastman Museum recently received a grant award for $70,470 from the National Film Preservation Foundation (NFPF) to preserve three rare, endangered nitrate feature films from the museum’s collection. The 35mm prints of The Country Beyond (Irving Cummings, US 1926) and The Millionaire Vagrant (Victor Schertzinger, US 1917) are likely the only versions of the films that still exist. The single reel from The Gold Rush (Charles Chaplin, US 1925) is the only material for this legendary film that survives with original tinting. Due to nitrate decomposition in all three films, this is the last chance to save these unique prints. The Country Beyond, The Gold Rush, and The Millionaire Vagrant are all currently housed at the George Eastman Museum in optimal conditions but are nevertheless deteriorating. All of Chaplin’s major works, silent and sound, were originally released in black and white, with the exception of some early shorts (tinted in the night scenes). The Gold Rush is known for being Chaplin’s favorite film and the one for which he hoped audiences would remember him. A fourth nitrate film in the Eastman Museum collection, The Oath of the Sword (Japanese American Film Company, US 1914), will be preserved under a separate NFPF grant awarded to the Japanese American National Museum (JANM). The JANM will work in collaboration with the Eastman Museum to preserve this silent film made in the United States with an all-Japanese cast. Founded in 1947, the George Eastman Museum is the world’s oldest photography museum and one of the largest film archives in the United States, located on the historic Rochester estate of entrepreneur and philanthropist George Eastman, the pioneer of popular photography. Its holdings comprise more than 400,000 photographs, 28,000 motion picture films and three million archival objects related to cinema, the world’s preeminent collection of photographic and cinematographic technology, one of the leading libraries of books related to photography and cinema, and extensive holdings of documents and other objects related to George Eastman. As a research and teaching institution, the Eastman Museum has an active book publishing program, and its L. THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB Salary: Of course everyone would love to earn more money when changing jobs, but there is more to changing jobs than just improving your bottom line. As you begin your job search, consider how much you currently earn and if that allows you to live a life you love. If so, don’t overemphasize finding a new job that pays considerably more than your currently earn. On the flip side, young professionals who want to start a family in the years ahead should consider the costs associated with such a decision and how the salaries they earn at their next jobs may affect what they want down the road.

BE SAFE, HEALTHY AND HAPPY IN THE WORKPLACE WHILE PREGNANT The first thing pregnant working women should know is that they have the right to work while pregnant. In the United States, it has been illegal to discriminate against pregnant women in the workplace since 1978, when the Pregnancy Discrimination Act was passed. But in spite of those laws, some employers may be less receptive to their female employees’ pregnancies, with some insisting they harbor good intentions, such as the woman’s safety. Businesses cannot fire employees for being pregnant, and many courts have ruled that decisions about the safety of the woman and fetus are up to the employee and her doctor, not her boss. On the same token, a company cannot refuse to hire a person simply because she’s pregnant.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * There actually aren’t “57 varieties” of Heinz ketchup, and never were. Company founder H.J. Heinz thought his product should have a number, and he just happened to like 57. * Cataract surgery was possible as early as the 6th century B.C. * Barbie’s physical appearance was inspired by a German doll named Bild Lilli, created in 1952 and based on a high-end call girl named Lilli who was featured in the comic strip “Bild-Zeitung.” She was sold as an adult novelty in bars and tobacco shops -- definitely not as a children’s toy. Barbie inventor Ruth Handler saw the doll while vacationing in Europe and brought it home. * Sunsets on Mars are blue. * Mob boss Vincent Gigante would wander around New York in his bathrobe to convince the police he was insane, and thus avoid capture.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * If you keep a couple of crackers in your sugar jar, they’ll keep the sugar from caking. * Cucumber is a speedy diuretic. Try snacking on slices for a cool treat. Or deseed slices and slip a few in your glass of cold water. * “When we go to the doctor with our youngest, we bring a few crayons. She’ll lie down on the exam table paper, and we draw her outline. Then she can fill in her face and other details. This usually calms her while she is waiting. The doctor even has used the outline to talk about her body to her.” -- E.S. in Georgia * “In older houses, you might have a problem with cracking drywall when trying to hang pictures. You can solve this by placing a bit of clear tape over the spot where you’re going to drive a nail. It goes right in. If you’re nailing into wood, drag your nail through some soap (bar soap is fine) before striking. It does the same thing, keeping the wood from splitting.” -- P.K. in New Jersey * To prevent garbage cans from filling with water during rainstorms, drill several holes in the bottom, near the sides. This also will help bags to come out of the can easier. * Boost your metabolism by drinking green tea ... hot or cold. Try it over ice with honey and a sprig of mint.
