LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY Crowd control: Local restaurants tend to be smaller and more intimate than many chain restaurants. This can translate into a calm dining experience. When crowds are small, the noise level inside the restaurant may be muted and service may be fast because there aren’t as many tables to serve. Furthermore, local establishments, although concerned about making a profit, may be less worried about table turnover rate, preferring to let diners linger if it means repeat business. Sw eet and Spicy Pork M ini-Kabobs (Family Features) Prep time: 15 minutes. Cook time: 8 minutes. Yesterday, our beloved corgi mix, Shemp, was laid to rest. I feel so guilty. He passed from heatstroke after being out in the backyard for just one hour. I never realized that just the heat outdoors could be deadly to dogs. I always was conscientious about dangerous situations; I never once left Shemp in a hot car or walked him on hot sidewalks. Yet a few minutes of inattention, and my Shemp was suddenly in great distress. I rushed him to the veterinarian, but he just didn’t make it. Please warn your readers to keep their dogs inside on hot days and to monitor them closely for signs of heat stress. -- Devastated in Houston Dear Devastated: I am so sorry for the loss of your beloved Shemp. Thank you for warning other readers of the dangers of summer heat. Being outdoors during the extreme temperatures that we’ve experienced this summer, often passing 100 degrees in many states, is dangerous for dogs and other pets. Here are a few ways to keep them safe from heat injury. -- Walk dogs before sunrise and after sunset. Under a hot sun, sidewalks can quickly burn a dog’s paws, and heat and humidity can take a toll on their health. -- Do not leave pets outside unsupervised. Even if they’re just in the backyard, you might not notice their distress until it’s too late. -- Provide a shelter from the sun. A shelter with open sides and a solid top allows airflow and protects from the sun when your dog is outside. -- Make water available all day, everywhere. Carry water on walks, keep their indoor bowl full and provide a water bowl outside. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

DID YOU KNOW? Modern cars are technological marvels, and it turns out drivers may value tech over all else, including their choice of automaker. A 2017 study from Autotrader asked 1,000 participants an assortment of questions about technology and car buying. Roughly 60 percent of millennial car shoppers and more than 40 percent of baby boomers indicated they would switch vehicle brands just to get the technology features they want. Drivers are even willing to pay extra for their preferred tech. The Autotrader study found that the average shopper would pay an extra $2,276 to get the right tech features.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Alarming Rate of False Positives Plagues Lung Cancer Screening --DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 74-year-old female who smoked a pack a day for 40-plus years, having quit smoking about 18 years ago. As a precaution, I asked my primary doctor to order a screening CT scan, knowing that I’m a candidate for lung cancer. The results showed a 3-mm nodule in one lung, and I was advised not to worry and that my doctor would order another CT scan in six months. I can’t help but wonder if this is cancer and if an oncologist, after six months, will ask me why I waited so long to see him. -- T.W. ANSWER: Medical professionals have been attempting to screen for lung cancer for decades. Chest X-rays proved insensitive: By the time cancer could be seen on X-ray, it was usually too late to do anything about it. CT scans are much more sensitive (maybe too sensitive; see below), and studies have shown that some lives will be saved with a screening program. However, the number of people who would benefit is relatively small. 256 moderate-to-heavy smokers would need yearly screening for three years in order to prevent one lung cancer death. There are two other significant concerns about lung cancer screening. The first is the issue you have now: an abnormal result and what to do about it. It’s extremely common. Almost 25% of scans will be abnormal, and 96% of the abnormal results will be false positives. But it will require multiple scans, and sometimes an invasive procedure, to prove it. This means a great deal of anxiety among people who get the type of result you did. The small size of your nodule means the risk that this nodule is cancerous is much lower than 1%. A follow-up scan is the usual recommendation, and if the nodule is the same size or smaller, the chance of it being cancerous is very close to zero. You should have had a careful explanation of the likelihood of false positive results before getting the scan. You also should have been warned of the possible need for a biopsy and the possible financial costs associated with follow-up testing. The second concern is that current smokers who consider screening should receive intensive advice and help in quitting smoking. A negative CT scan is not a “clean bill of health” for a smoker, and quitting remains to be the single most important thing most smokers can do for their overall health.
HOW TO SUPPORT A LOVED ONE WITH CANCER Prepare yourself. Caregivers may be so busy looking into what they can do to help a loved one diagnosed with cancer that they overlook or forget the need to prepare themselves. The ASCO recommends that caregivers process their own feelings about a loved one’s diagnosis before they begin caring for that person. This can ensure their focus is where it needs to be when their loved needs help. In addition, caregivers can do everything to learn about their loved one’s disease ahead of time. Many patients are not forthcoming about their disease, and even those that are may find it physically and emotionally exhausting to repeatedly share the details of their disease with friends and family. Learning the basics on your own can save the patients from these feelings of exhaustion.

HOW TO CREATE A ROMANTIC NIGHT AT HOME Dress up the bed: Create a warm and inviting bedroom with some luxury bedding. Splurge on sheets with a high thread count and a new down duvet. Fluffy new pillows and room accents can make the space even more inviting. This new bedding may inspire extra cuddling together under the covers.
COMMON GRILLING MISTAKES Too much direct heat: Food should not char on the outside before the inside has a chance to cook. A two-zone fire, according to food experts at Serious Eats, enables grillmasters to cook over high heat to sear and then move the food to a lower temperature to continue to cook evenly.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * M.F. in Washington writes: “For taking to a party: Melt vanilla chips in the microwave, adding by handfuls and heating for about 15 seconds at a time. After 15 seconds, stir and repeat until chips have melted. Then dip small clusters of green grapes into the melted vanilla chips.” * “I read your tips in a Rochelle, Illinois, newspaper. The paper is sent to me by a friend, and I love the tips. Here is mine: For homemade spray and wash, mix 2 cups of water, 2 tablespoons of white vinegar, 1 tablespoon of baking soda and 1 tablespoon of dish soap.” -- K.W. in Tennessee * When purchasing school supplies, remember that paper, pencils, etc., typically aren’t on sale mid-year, so stocking up is a good idea. Just make sure the deal you are getting is a good one. Then put it away for distribution later! * I lay out my school clothes and even my hairbrush and stuff to get ready. I put my shoes and socks by the front door. I am always ready before my sister, and I get to watch TV while she is running around. -- R.G. in Florida * Pint-size water bottles are great for refilling with milk. The milk boxes at the grocery store are so expensive, and this way, I can control how chocolatey the chocolate milk is. -- C.C. in Oregon

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Games for Brain Training Cognitive brain training can keep our cognitive abilities functioning better for 10 years. The Advanced Cognitive Training for Independent and Vital Elderly (ACTIVE) is not a new study, but it bears looking at for what it offers seniors in terms of cognitive abilities. The government-funded study followed 2,832 seniors with an average age of 73 after they completed 10 training sessions and four booster sessions 11 and 35 months after the initial training. Participants were divided into four groups: memory training, reasoning training, speed of processing training and a control group with no training. What the study aimed to look at was cognitive abilities and performance in everyday activities, and they collected updated data at the one, two, three, five and 10-year points in the study. What researchers concluded was that seniors reported less decline in cognitive abilities for 10 years in the reasoning and speed portions, not the memory, which dropped off after five years. All this in only 10 training sessions plus four booster sessions? Authentic brain training programs can be found online but generally require a monthly fee. There are others, however, that we can sample for free to create our own training program. Try the dozen brain games at www.mentalup.co/blog/free-brain-games-for-seniors to see if you like these types of challenges. Look online for “free senior brain games,” and you’ll find many sites with free games to play without having to give any personal information or pay a fee. The best “brain stretching” might come from doing a variety of games. Choose from crossword, jigsaw, sudoku, chess, mazes, word puzzles, logic and more, switching around from day to day. Or go to Amazon.com and look for puzzle books. Look at the sample pages to see if they look too easy or too hard. For a great challenge, look for online Scrabble games where you play against the computer! (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.
This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

Look for this weekly column! Your questions answered by the local Cornell experts.
Master
Gardeners Should I prune my rose bush now? Always prune after your plants bloom (deadheading) except if your rose bush forms lovely rose hips that are also a feature of some species and varieties. Cut flower roses lie hybrid teas and many modern hybrids considered ‘everblooming’ will require faded flowers to be removed. Those flowering stems are best reduced by half to stimulate a second and third set of flowers throughout the season. Why is my lawn is turning brown while my neighbors aren’t, even though neither of us irrigate? On any given turf area or in a neighborhood, we can see a wide variety of responses to the current drought. Following is a list of factors
from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County that will affect how fast a turf shows droughty symptoms or dormancy: • Species: Tall fescue is one of the last to show drought symptoms, many days to weeks following bluegrass or perennial ryegrass. Since dormancy is a survival mechanism, Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass tend to survive drought better • Mowing height: Higher the mowing height, deeper the roots and the better the ability to find water lower in the soil, but the higher mowing height has to be established in the spring • Compaction/heavy soils: Compacted soils force shallow rooting • Sodded lawns tend to show drought faster
than seeded lawns because sod tends to have less root density than seeded lawns of the same cultivar and species, primarily due to soil texture differences between sod field and lawn • High fertility or heavily irrigated will show drought symptoms faster • Spring fertilizer vs heavy fall fertilizer: Better rooting with heavy fall fertilizer • Shade from an abiotic source like a building tends to keep area cooler and turf will retain
color longer • Shade from a biotic source like a tree will compete with turf for the water and turf always loses • Heavy traffic areas tend to show dormancy faster • Thick thatch leads to shallow rooting in the thatch and very rapid drought symptoms • Insect (grub) feeding or patch diseases also enhance dormancy symptoms

WHAT TO DO WHEN A PROJECT STALLS Be mindful of permits. Some home improvement projects require permits, and these permits often have expiration dates. Homeowners must keep permits in mind when projects start to stall, recognizing that they may need to reapply for permits if projects go unfinished for especially long periods of time.

A child’s school-aged years are filled with many different lessons and experiences. While in school, kids have the opportunity to broaden their horizons and meet new people. Many students will attend various schools before moving on to college, and therefore they must learn how to adjust to new schools. While many students attend elementary school together for years, students may not know their classmates once they make it to middle school, which tends to boast larger student bodies than elementary schools. That’s because many middle schools’ student bodies are a combination of several elementary schools. Making the transition from elementary school to middle school or junior high can spark anxiety in students, but that does not have to be. The National Education Association says a common element of a successful middle school experience is a smooth and positive transition from elementary school. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

PAVING & SEALING
STAY COOL THIS SUMMER WHILE LIMITING ENERGY CONSUMPTION Maintain air conditioners. Air conditioners contain air filters that, over time, can wear down and become dirty. The DOE notes that the relatively simple task of replacing and cleaning these air filters can reduce air conditioners’ energy consumption by as much as 15 percent. If the unit does not respond after routine filter maintenance, the DOE (energy.gov) lists issues with refrigerant, thermostat sensors and drainage as some common air conditioner problems. Homeowners who suspect these issues can contact certified professionals to inspect their units and perform any necessary repairs.

ROOFING MATERIALS TRANSFORM THE LOOK AND FUNCTIONALITY OF A HOME When renovating a home, homeowners may not give ample thought to the roof unless there is a leak or another sign of damage. It’s easy to forget about the roof when materials are working properly. Some people put off replacing or repairing a roof simply because of the costs of such undertakings. However, the right roof can improve the appearance of a home and provide protection against the elements, potentially preventing damage to a home’s interior as well.

Get along? We all know the traffic congestion on the west side of [local town] gets really ugly. Traffic comes to a halt due to construction, but must we lay on the horns and curse at each other while we all sit in traffic? I can’t believe how nasty drivers have become all because there’s construction. F-bombs and horns are blowing with no one able to move. People have changed for the worst. This is no longer a sweet town with sweet people. You anger someone in a car, and you’ll get flipped off or crashed into or cussed out. Why? Please stop this behavior. We are all stuck in traffic, and no one is going to move any faster with swear words and horns.

Tailgating I’m so sick of tailgaters, especially in the early morning. I do the speed limit or maybe 5 mph over. With all the deer this time of day, you would think drivers would back off a bit. Nope, right on my “butt.” If a deer runs out and I have to hit my brakes, guess what’ll happen? If the speed limit is too slow for you, just pass. What ever happened to common sense?
Be quiet! It’s summer and people’s windows are open at night for air. So, when you and your buddies decide you want to go on a fishing trip at 3:30am, you should keep that in mind when you’re having the utter disregard for your neighbors and waking them up with your hollering and laughing. It’s bad enough your old boat makes enough noise pulling out of the driveway. So rude!

Thank you Werner’s Farm Market The individual attention you give to your customers is the reason I keep coming back. It’s nice to know that the satisfaction of the people who patronize your place of business is important to you. That is not the case with all businesses, and is refreshing to see.

Here’s what’s happening at your local library… DID YOU KNOW? Dogs are wildly popular pets. The American Pet Products Association says there are 63.4 million households in the United States that have a dog, and with the exception of 2002 and 2015, that number has steadily risen since 2000. Certain breeds remain especially popular among dog owners. In August 2021, the pet insurance provider Trupanion released the most popular dog breeds of 2020, and the top five breeds were: 1. Labrador retriever 2. Golden retriever 3. Goldendoodle 4. German shepherd 5. Labradoodle GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

BRICK HOMES FIGHT FIRES THE LONGEST (NAPSI)—Firefighters report that it takes about an hour and a half for a fire to breach a brick home-as compared to fiber cement in under an hour and vinyl siding in just minutes. Choosing brick exteriors to protect their own firehouses, firefighters say brick homes help slow the spread, offering the extra few minutes to help save lives and property as this brief video shows. While the International Residential Code (IRC) does not require cladding on singlefamily homes to have a fire rating, the International Building Code (IBC) acknowledges that fired-clay brick has tested to provide a minimum one-hour fire resistance rating alone, regardless of backing material. This is something that synthetic materials—such as fiber cement—cannot claim. Primarily made of clay, brick is classified as a noncombustible material that will not burn, melt or combust. In a one-hour severe fire test conducted independently for the Brick Industry Association (BIA), vinyl siding burned after only 18 minutes, fiber cement failed within one hour and fired-clay brick withstood the flames after one hour. The test was conducted in accordance with ASTM E119, the Standard Test Methods for Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials. Learn More: BIA is the nationally recognized authority on clay brick construction representing the nation’s distributors and manufacturers of clay brick and suppliers of related products. Catholic Charities’ Home Visitation Program Receives $65,000 from Rochester Area Community Foundation BY LAURA E. JACOBS

atholic Charities has received a $65,000 grant from the Muriel H. Marshall Fund for the Aging of Rochester Area Community Foundation to continue to support Genesee County residents through its Home Visitation Program, which provides weekly visits to homebound adults 60+ who live independently or with family. Catholic Charities has been receiving funding since 2010, when it first launched its Home Visitation Program. The purpose of the program is to bring a sense of connectivity and friendship to program members. Volunteers engage in friendly conversation, partake in hobbies and special interests such as reading, crafts, baking or card games. Visits also may include phone calls. This grant is for a one-year period. “Due to physical restrictions or one’s shrinking social circles, seniors are more likely to become socially isolated and experience loneliness and depression,” said Linda Chadderdon, program manager for Catholic Charities’ Home Visitation program. “Thanks to the continued support from the Muriel H. Marshall Fund for the Aging, we are giving seniors throughout Genesee County a chance to feel connected again through weekly visits, conversation, and friendship.” Rochester Area Community Foundation engages philanthropists and community partners to improve its eight-county region by promoting philanthropy that helps to create an equitable community and strengthen the region’s vitality. Since 1972, the Community Foundation has awarded more than $590 million in grants and scholarships. For more information, visit racf.org. For more information about Catholic Charities’ Home Visitation Program and if interested in participating or becoming a volunteer, please call the Batavia office at 585-343-0614. HELP WANTED
Look for ways to be more efficient. Interactions with coworkers can make work more enjoyable, but working parents should not spend too much time shooting the breeze with their fellow employees. Doing so wastes time and only contributes to work-related stress. Commuters who don’t drive themselves to work can be more efficient by using their commutes to read emails, arrange meetings or catch up on projects. Doing so allows for more time to get work done while in the office, which can make it easier to go home on time.

WOMEN AND STEM The number of women entering the professional fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is slowly growing around the world, but there is still a sizable gender gap in these professions. According to the College Board, which produces many standardized tests, only 27 percent of all students taking the AP Computer Science exam in the United Science are women. Similarly, just 18 percent of American computerscience degrees are attained by females. However, this is not the case elsewhere in the world. A paper by Gijsbert Stoet and David Geary published in Psychological Science noted that women who live in countries with traditionally higher gender inequality tend to choose STEM professions more readily. Algeria, for example, has one of the highest ratios of women in STEM professions, at 41 percent. Stoet and Geary surmise that women in these countries may be choosing careers with the strongest path to financial independence.

siblings. Limit cycling excursions to a reasonable amount of time so youngsters’ health is not compromised. • Focus on fun. Consider what kids will get out of the trip and gear the afternoon around that. Choose a path that circles a scenic lake or leads to an ice cream stand. Make your cycling excursion more of an afternoon out than a marathon biking session. • Take frequent breaks. Little legs may not be able to keep up, and adults will need to
anticipate stopping along the way. • Know the terrain. Stick to routes you have ridden before. Leave the more intense courses that include extreme climbs and dips for those times when kids are not in tow. Stick to lightly trafficked routes, or travel during off-peak hours. SMART WAYS TO SAVE FOR YOUR FUTURE (NAPSI)—According to the Federal Reserve Board, four in 10 adults, if faced with an unexpected expense of $400, would either not be able to cover it or would cover it by selling something or borrowing money. If you’re ever among them, or the 78 percent of American workers who live paycheck to paycheck, you can assist yourself. It can pay to consider these six hints that can help you save: 1. Know your numbers. Keep track of where you spend your money. Include groceries, gas, utilities, entertainment, housing and debts. 2. Make tough choices. Distinguish between things you need (utilities, debt payments and rent) and things you want (vacations, eating out). Subtract what you have to spend on “needs” from your monthly income to determine what you have left for “wants.” 3. Pay yourself first. Have a percentage of each paycheck routed automatically into your savings account. Saving needs to be a priority—consider it a “need.” 4. Expect the unexpected. No matter how well you budget, life may throw the unexpected at you. 5. Keep your stuff in shape. Similarly, keeping major appliances and vehicles in good condition can help you save. 6. Comparison shop for financial products. Take the time to compare insurance policies, bank accounts, savings accounts and credit cards. For instance, there’s the new Unlimited Cash Back Bank Account, by Green Dot Bank. With this account, Green Dot pays its cardholders a 3 percent cash back bonus when they make online or in-app purchases. People spend lots of money online at various websites and buy through apps, such as ride sharing, video streaming and meal delivery services, so getting an additional 3 percent cash back on the things you normally buy anyhow can add up. What’s more, you can earn 3 percent annual interest when you save your money in the Green Dot Bank HighYield Savings Account (Member FDIC)—higher than what many banks pay in annual interest. It’s free with the app and the interest earned is automatically added to your annual Cash Back Bonus amount. To sign up for the account or learn more about it, go to the Green Dot app or www.GreenDot.com.
