GROWING TRENDS IN TODAY’S HOMES Smaller homes: Home sizes in the United States steadily increased for decades, eventually leading to an average of 2,453 square feet in 2014, according to U.S. Census figures. However, Realtor.com reported in 2015 that new construction homes have already begun to shrink by 40 square feet. There seems to be a slight trend toward more modest homes as people consider affordability and maintenance on larger properties. The National Association of Home Builders states buyers are now looking for smaller, more livable homes with flexible floor plans, energy-efficient appliances and plenty of storage space.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Surgery Is Valid Option for Severe Sleep Apnea ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: My son, who is 30 years old, was recently diagnosed with severe obstructive sleep apnea and currently uses a CPAP machine. He says does not want to use this for the rest of his life, therefore, he has researched surgery to correct his OSA. Recently he consulted with a sleep expert, and now has surgery scheduled with that doctor. My son will have a septoplasty and a palate expansion before a more radical surgery in a year called MMA. My son feels that these surgeries will give him the longest lasting cure for his OSA. I am very concerned about all of these surgeries. I value your objective opinion and hope you can give me some reassurance that these surgeries are worth the pain. -- G.M. ANSWER: Although CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure, which works by using air to keep the airway open) is the usual treatment for obstructive sleep apnea, surgery is another effective way to treat OSA. Surgery is most appropriate for those who wish a surgical solution (some people can’t stand the CPAP machine), those who have a surgically correctable problem (see below), and those who are good candidates for surgery; younger age makes surgery seem more reasonable to me. The specific surgery chosen depends on an individual’s unique anatomy. Surgery on the uvula (yes, the dangling thing at the back of the throat), soft palate and pharynx is the most common surgery, but maxillomandibular advancement surgery (MMA) has been shown to be successful in several well-known medical centers in the U.S., such as Mayo Clinic and Stanford. Success rates are high, and some studies have shown surgical cure of obstructive sleep apnea in over half of those who undergo the procedure. Not knowing your son and not being a surgeon, I can’t give an objective opinion for him in particular, but I can say that in appropriate patients, surgical treatment of OSA is reasonable.

Don’t just replace but upgrade your headlight bulbs. Bulbs that have started to dim need to be repla ced, but auto enthusiasts or maintenance-savvy drivers know they can upgrade their bulbs w hen replacing them. Indu stry experts recommend replacing headlamp bulbs every tw o years, and replacing them in pairs to make sure the vehicle’s lighting is equally balanced. But rather than sticking w ith the bulbs provided by the car maker, look for a bulb that makes it easier to see at night and during hazardous conditions. These headlights put more light on the road, helping to make up for poor w eather, dimly lit roads, aging headlights, and even the loss of n ight vision many drivers experience as they age. Capable of providing up to 100 percent more light than the stan dard halogen bulbs found on the majority of vehicles today, special headlights create a better beam patte rn that is dramatically longer than the standard bulbs, vastly improving driver vision and safety. Avoid hanging items that compromise visibility. M any drivers like to hang trinkets, fuzzy dice or personal photos from their vehicles’ rearview mirrors. Avoid hanging such items, w hich can prove distracting and res trict your view of the road.

* This tip will change your life when peeling eggs: After you have hard-boiled your eggs, drain and submerge in ice water. Put them back in the pot, put the lid on and shake. Shake in all directions for up to a minute. The eggs practically slip right out of their shells. Just rinse and prep. -- JoAnn
AVOID HOT WEATHER AUTOMOTIVE BREAKDOWNS
* “To mark the end on a roll of tape, save your bread tabs. Stick one on the tape end and it will be ready and easy to start the next time. If it’s a thick tape, you can use two clips -- one at either side of the tape. This way, it won’t split on you.” -- M.E. in Maryland
Plan ahead for potential summer breakdowns by bringing along water, snacks, sunscreen, and an emergency medical kit. Be sure mobile phones are fully charged and that the number of a tow service or roadside assistance crew is entered into your list of contacts in the event of an emergency.
* Use a flat iron to iron your collar if it’s rumpled. This also works to straighten out buttonholes that have crimped.

HOMETOWN
Make this a safe fireworks season Fireworks displays are a hallmark of summer, and a frequent component of Independence Day celebrations and commemorative events that require a touch of flair. Aweinspiring pyrotechnics shows lure millions of spectators around the world each and every year. Many people experiment with fireworks on their own, but that can be dangerous. According to the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission, thousands of people are injured by fireworks in the United States each year. Whether purchased legally or on the black market, fireworks pose a considerable threat. Fireworks purchased on the black market may be especially dangerous, as they likely were not subjected to government regulations and inspections. While summer might be the season of fireworks, it’s important that people who intend to incorporate fireworks into their summer festivities keep safety in mind at all times. The following are a handful of ways to ensure this summer is both fun and safe. •
Attend a municipal firework display rather than hosting your own. Professionals follow certain safety protocols that private citizens are unfamiliar with, and there is often a considerable distance between audiences and professional fireworks displays.
•
Exercise caution if fireworks are legal where you live. Maintain a safe distance from fireworks at all times and never allow children to handle fireworks.
•
Read and strictly adhere to manufacturer’s instructions.
•
Light only one firework at a time, and never attempt to re-ignite a firework that doesn’t light the first time around.
•
Do not carry fireworks in your pocket.
•
Do not shoot fireworks out of metal or glass containers.
•
Always wear safety glasses when lighting fireworks, and keep water or a fire extinguisher around for emergencies.

Help! My Cats Have Started Fighting DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My two cats, Mitsy and Bitsy, got along well for nearly five years. Bitsy is 11 years old, about six years older than Mitsy. In the past couple of months, they squall and squabble with each other every time they’re in the same room. What is going on, and how do I stop it? -- Cara C., Albuquerque, New Mexico DEAR CARA: Take both of your cats to the veterinarian as soon as an appointment is available. Because the behavior just recently started after years of tranquility, a health issue could be at the root of their fighting. Senior cats are especially likely to develop conditions that cause them to be cranky or more territorial than usual. Pain from arthritis or other conditions can be a big factor in making Bitsy irritable, tired and just not in the mood to hang out with Mitsy. Likewise, Mitsy could be developing a medical condition; it’s best to rule out physical problems in both cats. Once their health has been assessed and treatment, if necessary, started, then the hard work of reconciling the two can begin. Keep the cats separated at first -- on opposite sides of the house, if possible, in closed rooms. Each day, reintroduce them by placing a small plate of food in front of each door and letting them out. If they calmly eat, then the next day, move both plates closer. Observe the cats as they eat; if they begin to growl or tense up, put both back into their rooms before they escalate -- fighting is very traumatic for them. Shift the bowls back a bit and try again.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Listen Up: Engage Your Brain With Podcasts Have you ever listened to a podcast? A podcast is a digital audio or video file that you can access from the internet. They’re often in a series that you can tune into one at a time, almost like radio on demand. They’re usually associated with a website where you can find out what’s available and a schedule for new ones. You can listen or watch on your computer, phone or tablet, but you’ll need an app (application) if you want to download and take it with you, unless your phone has one pre-installed. One way to find entertaining podcasts is to plug one of your areas of interest into a web browser and add “podcast” to see what comes up. Or as a place to start, look at AARP’s website (www.aarp.org/ podcasts) and see what it offers. Right now, there are podcasts about various scams, protecting your finances and high prescription-drug prices, all worth a listen. Scroll to the bottom of the page for instructions. If you search the internet for podcasts, you’ll find vintage radio programs, celebrities, financial information, stories from history, news, brain stretchers, sports themes, stress reduction and so much more. There must be hundreds of thousands of podcasts out there to choose from. Try a search for “podcasts for seniors” to see what surprises pop up. Another way to keep your brain stretched is with online classes, called MOOCs, which stands for massive open online courses. There are thousands you can audit for free, attending remotely without ever leaving home. You don’t receive credit for audited classes. Coursera (www.coursera.org) is your go-to source for online learning. (At this writing, it lists 1,782 free courses from 200 universities.) Or see Edx (www.edx.org), co-founded by Harvard and MIT, for information on their 3,000 classes to audit for free. For more listings, see MOOCs at www.mooc.org. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

S E V RA Our Deepest Gratitude On behalf of the team of people who put on the second annual chicken BBQ for the Trevor Irby Memorial Scholarship, we would like to thank you for your support. The amount of love and generosity from everyone surrounding the fundraiser filled our hearts during such a challenging time. Thanks to the success of the BBQ and all the giving donations, we were able to make a generous contribution towards the Trevor Irby Memorial scholarship. This is a cause that is very near to our hearts. During such trying times in our personal lives and in current events, it is difficult to remember that there is still so much love and compassion in the world. Thank you for helping to make this day so positive, for all the generosity towards the scholarship, and for showing such compassion and grace. You are appreciated. A special thank you to the Stewart family, a constant support and pioneer of this fundraiser. Also, a special thank you to Dr. Aguirre, Faith Gates, and Paul Teed for making all this possible. - The Warner Family Kindness to a stranger On August 27th from 10:30PM to 3:30AM, I was waiting to be taken care of at UMMC Emergency Room for injuries sustained due to a fall. A young mom with a sick two-year-old boy was also waiting to see a doctor. Having left my home in a hurry, I didn’t have any cash with me, and they didn’t allow my wife to wait with me. Using hand signals, I asked the woman to please get me a bottle of pop, and she got me a root beer. In the excitement, I neglected to make arrangements to pay her back. I would like to pay her back and let her know how much I appreciated her kindness in helping a thirsty 88-year-old man caught without any cash.
Another natural area lost Construction has started on a new low-price store in Hemlock even though there are 2 other stores of the same name within 6 miles. At the site, there was a field full of flowers that attracted many butterflies and bees and a nice little pond alive with turtles, frogs and dragonflies. Then one day, the bulldozers cleared the field, ripped down trees and filled the pond, snuffing out all life. What an absolute shame! When are we going to stop destroying our natural areas for the sake of convenience, cheap goods, profit, and a few low-paying jobs? Demand Social Security changes Those who work and have Social Security deducted should be outraged that the government uses our money for their “slush funds.” It’s our money to be used when we are retired, disabled or for family hardships. Why aren’t taxpayers demanding our Representatives manage S.S. money as it was intended? Don’t forget, they work for us, and if they aren’t representing us, they should be voted out. This abuse has been going on for many years, but still they “pickpocket” our money without taxpayer permission. Everybody should be contacting their representatives from the bottom to the top. With computers, it is easy to contact our representatives. No more rocks Why are we painting trite messages on rocks (“be kind”) and then leaving them around on the ground outside? I don’t like it. Leave the rocks alone.

Free Chronic Disease Self-Management Classes Come to Genesee County BY SCOTT WURTZEL The peer leaders are trained to help people learn self-management. “I went through a training in June of 2016 to become a chronic disease self-management peer leader,” Becker said. “I did a very extensive four days of training in Syracuse. In our trainings, you learn how to be a peer leader to your audience, the people in your class, and we have very strict guidelines we have to follow because the program itself is created through Stanford University.”
Covid has been at the forefront of everyone’s mind for over a year now, but that doesn’t mean other diseases just cease to exist. A type of disease that has certainly not gone away is chronic disease. Chronic diseases are those that persist over long periods of time. They generally cannot be prevented by vaccines or cured by medication. Therefore, it’s up to the individual to care for themselves. Luckily, there are people out there who want to help those that suffer from chronic disease. Independent Living of the Genesee Region is offering a free, six-course program about chronic disease selfmanagement. Donna Becker, assistant to the Director at Independent Living, is a peer leader for the chronic disease classes. Becker shared more detail about self-management. “The first thing we need to stress is that we are not medical professionals,” she explained. “We need to let everybody know that so that they are not coming in expecting us to help cure a problem. Selfmanagement means we help them cope with whatever chronic disease they may have. Let’s say someone has COPD. We may tell them, ‘You know what, get out there, get in a little bit of walking.’ We always stress to follow up with your provider if you have any symptoms that are not normal. We stress that throughout the whole workshop.” “The ways we help people with any chronic disease, whether it’s diabetes, arthritis, COPD, an eating disorder, or asthma, is that we have different techniques,” Becker continued. “These techniques may include relaxation by listening to CDs or getting out there and walking. We do a lot of brainstorming in our class, so it’s very interactive with our participants that are in there. We actually reach out to them.” Healthy eating is naturally one of the important topics covered. “We discuss healthy eating. This includes the plate method, explaining which parts you divide the plate up into, and how to make healthy choices when eating food, that type of thing,” shared Becker. “We also do weight management, medication management, making sure you are on the right medications, and being an advocate for yourself. We don’t tell you how to cure a problem. We just help them cope with that problem.”

Becker also talked about the reasoning for why they started offering the program in the first place. “We found that there are a lot more people out there with chronic conditions, and they don’t know how to manage their health problems,” Becker explains. “Yes, they can go to their doctor, and sometimes they feel like the doctor is not really listening, so we found that there was a need. There are people out there who just want to learn more, to learn how to manage their own problems. I think people now are getting to where they just want to try to live healthier lives. We are there to just help encourage them and give them some tips on how to do it.” With so much effort being put into this, why is it being offered for free? It comes down to cost, not for the company, but for the consumer. “A lot of people probably wouldn’t come if there was a cost because they might not be able to afford it,” Becker stated. “We want to make it available to all the people in the community. We don’t want to have to charge. We did our training, and again, there are a lot of people out there who maybe couldn’t come if there was a fee.” “These workshops, two and a half hours for 6 weeks, give people quite a bit of information in each class,” Becker concluded. “It’s just nice to see what people take away from the class and what they learned.” Classes will be held at the Genesee County Office for the Aging, 2 Bank St in Batavia. COMMON GRILLING MISTAKES Too much direct heat: Food should not char on the outside before the inside has a chance to cook. A two-zone fire, according to food experts at Serious Eats, enables grillmasters to cook over high heat to sear and then move the food to a lower temperature to continue to cook evenly.

The cost of a college education continues to rise. The College Board says the average cost of tuition and fees for the 2015-2016 school year was $32,405 at private colleges, $9,410 for state residents at public colleges, and $23,893 for out-of-state residents attending public universities. The high cost of education compels many students to find ways to finance their education. For many, that means exploring available scholarships.

HELPING KIDS FIND HOBBIES Much like adults can benefit from participating in hobbies, children can reap rewards from engaging in hobbies. According to the Child Development Institute, hobbies give children a chance to express themselves. The CDI also notes that hobbies can play an important role in children’s self-discovery and boost their self-esteem. Some children may discover hobbies on their own, requiring little if any assistance on the part of their parents. For example, some kids may display an interest in music that parents, even those with no such musical inclination, can foster by purchasing certain instruments. But some children may need a little more prompting, and parents of such boys and girls can take certain steps to help their youngsters find rewarding hobbies. Involve kids in your own hobbies. Kids look up to their parents and often want to emulate what their mothers and fathers do. If possible, involve children in your own hobbies. Gardeners can teach their youngsters how to grow and tend to a garden, while painters can host family painting nights where everyone is encouraged to create their own masterpiece. Parents whose hobbies are more adult-oriented, like woodworking, can still involve their children. For example, work with children to design a new item, then show them how the item goes from paper to finished product; just avoid allowing them to use any unsafe tools or machines. Let kids choose an activity. While some children might take to hobbies their parents favor, others might need to be given some freedom to find their own activities. Afford youngsters this chance, recognizing that it might take some time before kids find an activity that genuinely sparks their passion. Be a source of encouragement. Some hobbies may prove more difficult than kids first imagined, requiring some perseverance before they can be enjoyed fully. In such instances, observe youngsters while they engage in the activity. If they appear to be enjoying themselves but are periodically frustrated, encourage them to keep trying. If kids appear to be disinterested in overcoming any struggles, then they might benefit by pursuing another hobby. Don’t hesitate to focus on fun. Hobbies can teach kids valuable lessons and provide a sense of fulfillment, but it’s important that parents not overlook the importance of fun in regard to their children’s hobbies. Hobbies can provide children with the same respite from busy schedules that they do adults, and that break should be as fun as possible. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

ADVICE FOR A SUCCESSFUL CAREER CHANGE Individuals change jobs for many reasons, including greater professional satisfaction, money or a change of location. The financial experts at The Balance say that people change jobs more frequently than many people may think, noting today’s average worker changes jobs 12 times during his or her career. It is not uncommon for workers to change careers several times in a lifetime. The notion that the job a person starts out in directly after graduation is the one that he or she will have for the rest of his or her life - or at the very least, several years - is no longer the norm. Many younger workers migrate between jobs for greater compensation and fulfillment. Older workers, too, are faced with career stagnation. A survey from the University of Phoenix School of Business found 59 percent of working adults say they’re interested in taking the leap of a midlife career change. Once the idea for a career change has been planted in a person’s mind, he or she may be anxious to jump right in. However, career coaches and other experts say that it is better to take the transition slowly and confirm that changing careers is truly the path to take. Finding the right time for the transition is equally important.
