HOW TO KEEP OUTDOOR LIVING AREAS SAFE
Consider fencing. Fencing can make an outdoor living space more private and safe. Local laws may mandate that pools be enclosed with fencing, but even living spaces without pools can be made safer with the installation of a fence. Firepits are wildly popular, as more than 35 percent of homeowners who responded to the ICFA survey acknowledged their intention to purchase new firepits in 2021. Adding fencing around areas with firepits establishes boundaries, which is a must for homeowners with small children. Fencing also makes it harder for local wildlife to gain access to a property, which can decrease residents’ risk for tick-borne diseases like Lyme disease.

On September 15, 2003, author and illustrator of children’s books, Peter H. Reynolds released his book “The Dot.” In the story, Vashti felt like she couldn’t draw — but her art teacher wouldn’t accept that. “Just make a mark, and see where it takes you,” the teacher said to Vashti. So, she marked her parchment paper with a small dot. The next day, Vashti was surprised to find her paper with the dot on the classroom wall.
Vashti was so proud of her work that she started creating drawings with different kinds of dots.
International Dot Day, September 15, is celebrated by adults and children for boosting courage so that their creative potential is released. It is a great day to connect and collaborate, and also to celebrate self-expression.

I have what looks like mold on the soil of a Christmas Cactus, with no indications on the leaves or stems.HowshouldItreatit?
Assuming it is mold or fungus on the soil of the Christmas cactus, that usually indicates it is being watered too much so the soil remains moist, which allows mold to grow. It would help to see the mold to be sure. Contact your
local Cooperative Extension for analysis. An alternate possibility is that the area where the plant is located has high humidity which could also encourage a fungus or mold.

Come autumn, many foods seem to take on a unique flavor exclusive to the season. That’s thanks to the ubiquitous “pumpkin spice,” which each fall is a specially featured ingredient in everything from cream cheese to marshmallows. Naturally, pumpkin spice is also a key ingredient when preparing pumpkin pie. But just what does pumpkin spice contain? Pumpkin spice is a combination of several different ground spices. It typically includes cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and nutmeg. It also may include allspice. Pumpkin spice is the name given to the blend in the United States. In the United Kingdom, pumpkin spice is known as “mixed spice,” which is a similar but not exact blend as that used to create pumpkin spice. Both feature cinnamon as the dominant flavor.
(NAPSI)—The Department of Defense reports that 1.3 million Americans serve in the military. If you or someone you care about is ever among them and sent overseas, you may be glad to learn about an organization that’s been assisting members of the U.S. armed forces, veterans and their families since the early 1900s: the American Red Cross. It provides emergency communication services, resiliency programs and morale activities.
“We are committed to delivering critical services with a caring touch wherever and whenever they’re needed—24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year—for military members and their families at home and around the world,” said Koby Langley, senior vice president for Service to the Armed Forces at the Red Cross. Now, the organization is expanding support for U.S. military personnel in Eastern Europe with a new office in Romania.
In addition to aiding military members and their families, the American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to disaster victims; supplies about 40 percent of the nation’s blood; teaches lifesaving skills; and provides humanitarian aid. A not-for-profit organization, it depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public.

His Passion Toward Environmental Conservation and Hunting
BY SUZIE WELLS
National Hunting and Fishing Day is September 23rd this year. Al Fagan, District Manager for the Wyoming County Soil & Water Conservation District, shares his insights and passion toward environmental conservation as well as hunting/archery. He says conservation is an everyday concept for him and he greatly appreciates the land and natural resources in Wyoming County and Western NY.
Growing up, Al’s family was very much into the outdoors, hunting, fishing, camping, etc., and he knew he was headed toward a life in some environmental field. He earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Forestry from Paul Smith’s College in the Adirondacks and spent time in Acadia National Park before heading back home to Wyoming County. He admits he doesn’t do much with forestry anymore, but focuses on agricultural environmental conservation practices as well as invasive species management, water conservation, and aquatic habitats in Wyoming County.
Al loves Wyoming County for its rural natural spaces with proximity to urban centers. He says, “You can get whatever you need within a reasonable distance but get to come home.” He loves the small town feel with beautiful and diverse landscapes, from the long rolling slope along the Genesee River to the more hilly western parts of the county. “And hey, we have some of the best trout streams around right here,” he adds.
Al says he works with local, state, and federal resources to receive funding for grant-based projects around the county. He particularly notes working with farms on conservation practices that help prevent erosion and improve water quality, including manure storages, diversion ditches, cover crops, and everything in between.
Al moonlights as an archery technician at Drape’s Outdoors in Wadsworth, where he’s shared his passion with youth and adults alike for nine years now, helping people get their archery equipment tuned up. Al explains that responsible hunting is a necessary part of conservation.
e Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) hosts a youth turkey hunting weekend each April, a week ahead of the regular hunting season, to expose youth ages 12-15 to the outdoors and to the experience of turkey hunting before seasoned veterans get out there. Al describes the experience guiding the daughter of Featured Media’s own Kathryn Boor on her first successful youth turkey hunt. In the wee hours of the morning in the spring of 2022, Vivianne and her uncle, Jim, met up with Al in a turkey blind they set up a er scouting land. Shortly a er dawn broke,
then-13-year-old Vivianne successfully shot and bagged a tom turkey a er the group called for a short time.
Vivianne says, “Al’s experience and expertise in hunting were so helpful and it gave me a lot of confidence to know that I had people behind me making sure I was good and prepared. Al helped me to realize that it takes a lot of patience to turkey hunt. I love hunting. It helps me feel like I’m pulling my own. It’s good to be able to provide food and help keep balance of the nature that is all around us.”
Alsayso enthebiggestchallengeishumanssettingupclosetotheturkeys, who roost in trees at night, without alerting them. Turkeys are very smart, he says, and they o en notice and evade the hunters. rough stealth and successful calls and good marksmanship, hunters can successfully bag the turkeys. While Al enjoys hunting, he says he finds most enjoyment in helping others such as Vivianne call and harvest their own birds.
To aspiring hunters, Al advises: “Don’t be afraid to reach out to seasoned veterans for advice, but also don’t be afraid to try something new. ere’s no set way to do things, as long as you stick to the law of course, and sometimes the most outlandish strategies end up having the best results.”
To aspiring conservationists, he advises: “Be aware of where everything comes from, where the water comes from, how trees impact the ecosystem, environmental processes, and ask to shadow with experts. Don’t be afraid to ask for help or more information.”
And to all humans in Wyoming and other counties, Al says, “No matter if you’re in a village or out in the boondocks, there are things anyone can do to help conserve” our natural resources. He suggests simple things like not mowing with clippings directed into a stream or body of water, or planting trees on your property – seemingly small things that make a huge impact on the nature we share and enjoy. Al encourages all to contact your local Soil and Water Conservation district for more ideas for everyday ways you can help conservation efforts.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
By Keith Roach, M.D.
Suspecting and Diagnosing Hereditary Hemochromatosis
DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband was diagnosed with hemochromatosis 13 months before he died. I recommended that his blood relatives get tested so they can get treatment early, if necessary. Some doctors don’t know to check ferritin levels to make a diagnosis in a person with a family history of hemochromatosis. -- C.G.
ANSWER: Hereditary hemochromatosis (HHC) is a genetic disease of iron overload. In a person with HHC, the intestines absorb as much iron as they can all the time, even if the body doesn’t need it, whereas a person without HHC will simply stop absorbing iron if it isn’t necessary. The iron can go into and damage many organs, especially the liver, heart, bone marrow, hormone-producing glands and skin. The diagnosis should be suspected in close relatives of an affected person. Although checking ferritin levels is useful in making the diagnosis, iron tests, total iron-binding capacity tests and hemoglobin tests should also be ordered. If the family member has a recognized genetic mutation, such as C282Y homozygote or C282Y/H63D compound heterozygote, those genetic tests may also be useful in making the diagnosis. The diagnosis should even be suspected in people with vague symptoms, such as weakness and fatigue. I teach my students and residents to consider the possibility of iron overload, as it is common, easily tested for, and easily treated with phlebotomy (blood removal). Symptomatic HHC is more common at an earlier age in men than women, but it still should be considered in younger women.
A clinician should also consider iron overload in people with enlarged livers or abnormal liver enzymes, diabetes, changes in skin tone (bronze or gray), heart failure and some kinds of arthritis. Most people with these conditions do not have HHC, but initial testing is cheap and easy.
Treatment can be done by donating blood. My first patient with HHC donated over 100 units of blood before his blood levels came down to the target range.

3 SIMPLE WAYS TO A HEALTHIER HEART
Heart disease is a formidable foe. According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, accounting for approximately 800,000 deaths every year. The Government of Canada notes that heart disease is the second leading cause of death in that country, annually accounting for tens of thousands of deaths. (Note: Canada’s population is slightly more than one-tenth the population of the United States.)
While heart disease exacts a devastating toll on the United States and Canada, its reach extends far beyond North America, as the American College of Cardiology notes that cardiovascular disease accounts for 31 percent of all deaths across the globe.
In spite of the prevalence of heart disease, men and women are not helpless against it. In fact, there are many ways for men and women to reduce their risk for heart disease.
1. Maintain a healthy weight. The American Heart Association reports that between 60 and 70 percent of Americans are overweight or obese. Carrying around extra weight takes a toll on the body, increasing a person’s risk for heart disease and stroke. Overweight or obese men and women can work with their physicians to develop a plan for effective, long-term weight loss, a plan that will likely include a combination of diet and routine exercise.
2. Understand and manage blood pressure. The AHA notes that high blood pressure, a common condition affecting roughly one in three Americans, is often referred to as “the silent killer” because it does not necessarily produce symptoms. Blood pressure measures the force pushing outward on the walls of blood vessels as they carry blood oxygen to the body’s organs, and the force created as the heart rests between beats. Over time, the arterial walls of people with high blood pressure may become stressed and develop weak spots or scarring that makes them vulnerable to the buildup of plaque. Plaque buildup can increase the risk of blood clots and stroke. Blood pressure can rise as a person ages, so managing blood pressure involves routinely checking it and making certain changes, such as eating healthier foods and exercising more often, if it is high.
3. Control cholesterol levels. High levels of low-density lipoprotein, often referred to as “bad” cholesterol, can increase a person’s risk for heart disease. The AHA notes that excessive amounts of cholesterol can be deposited into the arteries as plaque. When that happens, it leads to a condition known as atherosclerosis, or a narrowing of the inside of the artery walls. That narrowing leads to an increased risk for heart attack and stroke. Men and women should get their cholesterol levels checked at least once every four to six years beginning at age 20. Men and women who have been diagnosed with high cholesterol should recognize that cholesterol is only found in animal products, so a diet that is rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains and low in animal products can provide a simple way for men and women to lower their cholesterol. A more thorough and detailed plan to lower cholesterol levels should be discussed with a physician.
More information about heart disease and how to combat it can be found at www.heart.org.

DID YOU KNOW?
Modern technology has forever transformed the classroom. As calculators replaced abacuses, mobile phone apps have now replaced calculators, and suchadvancementscontinuetochangehowstudentslearn.Onewayschools are notably different from those of the past is through the absence of a once major component of the classroom layout. Chalkboards are either missing or completely retrofitted in modern learning environments. In the 1800s, slate blackboards were the new technology, replacing handheld tablets of wood or slate. Within the last few years, schools have increasingly opted for cleaner “whiteboards”or“smartboards,”whicharedigitallyconnectedtocomputers and offer touch interfaces similar to those on tablets and smartphones. As ebooks replace textbooks and more assignments are handed in via digital documents, lockers may be the next to vanish.

Note Left on My Car
To whoever left a note on my car under the windshield wiper, you have done the right thing. You said, “I accidentally backed into your car. I’m so sorry. I checked everywhere on both cars and it appeared there was no damage.” and you left your phone number. Thank you! We need many more people like you in the world - people who are respectful of others’ property and take responsibility for their actions when they have an accident. You could’ve just as easily ran off, but you took responsibility for your error and did the right thing. By the way, I checked everything and there was no damage.
Thank you!
The Sunday before Labor Day, I had a fish dinner and coffee for lunch in the Canal View Restaurant in Newark. When I asked for my bill, I was told the couple at the table next to my booth had paid it. They had already left so I couldn’t thank them. Hopefully they will see this and know how much I appreciate it. Thank you so much! How thoughtful!
Youth Football
Hey youth football team. Want to know why your numbers are down? You might want to look internally at the coaches of these kids. They do not make it fun and they are obviously only coaching for their own kids. They are more concerned about statistics of YOUTH FOOTBALL players and making highlight films and posting these so -called stats on social media touting how great they are. What about the other players, the average players or the players who are on the fence about playing.? This is what youth football should be about, making a connection with ALL the players. Is the board really afraid of the coaches? Is this why they will not speak up? Bring back small town football......please!!
Refused service at local Urgent Care
To the women at the local Urgent Care, you are clearly in the wrong profession. My daughter was laughed at and mocked (thankfully she has a witness) when all she wanted to do was be seen and receive an x-ray!
All you wanted to do was gossip and make fun of those who need help!? You have been reported!

CORNER
How long do rabbits live?
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have a pet rabbit, Brownie, who is nearly 10 years old! He’s a Holland Lop, I think. He doesn’t do much at this age but sort of half-heartedly flop around his cage and the porch, then he settles onto the raised shelf in his cage and nibbles on carrots. He seems healthy, just slow. How much longer does he have le ? Do you think he’s lonely? --
Vicky R., Macon, Georgia
DEAR VICKY: First of all, wow! Ten years is quite a lifespan for a Holland Lop. It’s a testament to how well you care for him.
While the average lifespan of this rabbit breed is six to eight years, I have heard of H-Lops reaching 10, 12 or even 16 years of age! Care and comfort are really important for rabbits at any age. ey need a secure hutch, stable temperatures in summer and winter, fresh water always available, and good nutrition. ey also need things to gnaw on so their front teeth don’t grow too long, as well as plenty of fresh vegetables.
Introducing a new rabbit to the mix can be risky. ey might not take to each other, and fighting with another rabbit can cause stress, which can be deadly.
It sounds like Brownie is doing really well for his age. I recommend checking in with his vet if you notice any changes in his behavior or ability to get around. It sounds like you’re a little concerned that he isn’t moving around as much. Contacting the vet within 48 hours is a good rule for any changes in behavior, diet or activity for rabbits and other small pets.

DID YOU KNOW?
Brief breaks during the work day can dramatically improve one’s ability to focus on a task. A 2011 study published in the journal Cognition found that brief mental breaks can improve focus on a prolonged task. The study’s authors tested participants’ ability to focus on a repetitive computerized task for 50 minutes under various conditions. The control group performed the task without breaks or diversions. The switch group and non-switch group memorized four digits before performing the task and were directed to respond if they saw one of the digits on the screen while performing the task. The switch group was the only group to be presented with the digits twice during the experiment, and both groups were tested on their memory of the digits at the end of the task. Most participants’ performance declined considerably over the course of the 50-minute task. However, the performance of those in the switch group did not decline at all, as the two brief breaks to respond to the digits allowed them to maintain their focus throughout the experiment. The researchers behind the study concluded that the switch group’s performance was steady because the brain is built to detect and respond to change, and its performance will actually suffer if it must maintain prolonged attention on a single task without taking a break. Professionals with a lot on their plates may see their performance improve by taking frequent mental breaks throughout the workday.

STRANGE BUT TRUE
By Lucie Winborne
* The maddening but addictive Rubik’s Cube was created by accident. Professor of architecture Erno Rubik built a twistable box with colorful rows of labels on each side in an attempt to design blocks that could move without collapsing the entire structure. After rotating a few rows and mixing up the colors, the real challenge began: realigning the hues! It took Rubik about a month to restore his cube to its original condition.
