MOMENTS IN TIME • The History Channel

• On Jan. 21, 1950, in one of the most spectacular trials in U.S. history, former State Department official Alger Hiss is convicted of perjury in testimony about his involvement in a Soviet spy ring.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 76-year-old woman with diabetes. My body, as I have been told, is bad with arthritis, for which I have been prescribed Celebrex. I have been taking it for a few months now, and am definitely moving around with a lot less pain. I recently watched a program that devoted the entire hour to Celebrex. It scared me out of my wits upon hearing the side effects of the medicine. I am asking your advice about whether to stop taking the Celebrex. -- S.A. ANSWER: All medicines have risks, and in order to decide whether you should keep taking the medicine, you need to really understand what the risks are and balance them against the benefits you feel in your ability to move around more easily. In the case of Celebrex, we have a pretty good idea of what the risks are. Like all related drugs (including ibuprofen and naproxen), celecoxib (Celebrex) can damage the kidneys, so it isn’t recommended for people with kidney disease. There also can be allergic reactions, which may be related to allergies to sulfa drugs. A few people have had vision changes. However, the most concerning risk is heart disease -- both heart attacks and heart failure. These risks definitely are increased among users of celecoxib. However, the absolute risk is small: There were about two extra cases of all heart events, including heart attack and heart failure, per thousand people taking 400 mg once daily, and six extra events in people taking 400 mg twice daily. Those risks probably are higher if you are at increased risk for heart disease (which you probably are, because of your diabetes), but it still means less than 1 percent of people per year. If the medicine isn’t helping, the risk certainly isn’t worth it. However, only you can decide if the risk is worth the benefit. Drug companies get into big trouble when they try to hide the risks of their medications, and honesty demands that we admit that all drugs and supplements have risks. Only you can make that decision, but I think it’s up to us as doctors to have a frank discussion, especially about medications intended to be taken long-term. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 72-year-old female. My doctor told me four years ago that I would need a Pap test only every two years, which I have done. She told me recently that I would not need to have any more. My tests have always been negative. I am concerned, as I would rather be proactive and know early if I had cancer. What is your opinion, and what does the American Cancer Society say? -- B.L.S. ANSWER: All of the leading organizations, including the American Cancer Society, have recommended stopping screening at age 65 for women with no history of cancer and who have had adequate screening, meaning three negative Pap smears (or two negative combination Pap and HPV tests) in the past 10 years, with at least one in the past five years. The risk for cancer in this specific group is very low. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. Livonia Third-Graders Make a Difference in the Lives of Homeless Animals During the month of December, four third-graders put their passion for homeless animals and their plight to find their “fur-ever” homes to work by creating a campaign in conjunction with Livonia Central School to raise awareness of and bring in donations for Susie Q Dog ResQ and Hearthside Cats. Ultimately, they wanted to give pets a good Christmas even if they didn’t have homes. Sophie Beikirch, Gabby Peri, Aubrey Rivera and Molly Rowe researched several areas to donate to before coming up with Susie Q Dog ResQ and Hearthside Cats and then looked at the organizations’ websites to see what supplies the groups needed. After brainstorming their idea, they presented their plan to Principal Whittle who ultimately approved their idea. With the support of third-grade teacher Mrs. Willow Johnston, the girls worked hard on creating signs and making announcements to fellow students in the elementary school. Parents helped by posting the details of the drive on social media sites. Bins were put out in the school to accept donations of dog and cat food, cat litter, toys, blankets and towels, leashes and halters. They were able

Sophie Beikirch, Aubrey Rivera, Gabby Peri & Molly Rowe

to collect enough donations to fill the backs of two vehicles! Of course, without the support of their fellow students, teachers, administration and parents this would not have been possible. It was a true display of the meaning of small community support. The girls want everyone to know they can make a difference, too, by donating to these groups or even by adopting one of the many pets that are ready for adoption. Prevent stairway injuries Stairs are a necessity in many homes. While stairs serve a practical purpose, they also have the potential to be dangerous. According to the National Safety Council, more than one million injuries result each year from stairway falls. Staircase and stairway accidents constitute the second leading cause of accidental injury, second only to motor vehicle accidents. Each year, there are 12,000 stairway accident deaths. The Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation states that a large portion of Canadians who visit hospitals after a fall on or from stairs or steps in their homes are seniors (men and women age 65 years or older). However, many stairway falls can be prevented with some simple planning. · Install sturdy handrails. A common contributor to stairway falls is a failure to use handrails. Sturdy handrails can decrease fall rates. Even if a person slips, he or she may be able to prevent the fall by grabbing on to the handrails and regaining some of his or her balance. · Rely on highlighters or friction strips. According to a study titled, “Safety on stairs: Influence of a tread edge highlighter and its position,” by Richard J. Foster, fall risk may be reduced by using a highlighter positioned flush with the tread edge. This helps make stairs more visible, particularly for those with impaired vision. · Improve lighting on staircases. Failure to see steps may contribute to falls as well. Staircases should be well lit so that residents and guests know where to step. Subtle

Did You Know? Though vaccines are usually associated with childhood or foreign travel, older adults may need certain vaccinations as they age. Even those who received immunizations as youngsters may need refresher doses or vaccinations tailored specifically to the over 50 crowd. foot-level lighting can be installed to make it easier for people who frequently use steps at night. · Use slip-resistant materials. Slip-resistant surface material acceptable for normal floors should work on stair treads. Loose rugs should not be placed at the top or bottom of the landing. Outdoors, rough finishes are recommended, particularly on stairs that are subject to getting wet. · Improve step geometry. If slips and falls frequently occur on a particular staircase, consider the relationship between the rise and the run, advises the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety. The National Building Code of Canada says that, within a staircase, treads should have a uniform run and tread depth that does not vary more than 0.5 to 1 cm. Steep steps with high risers and/or short treads can increase the risk of falls. · Clear away clutter. One easy way to prevent falls is to keep stairs free of clutter. This means removing shoes, toys and other belongings that may be left on stairs or landings. Many falls on stairs can be prevented by being mindful of certain risk factors.

A big Thank You to Gretchen, Tammy and all the other amazing moms who put on the annual Gift away at the Brockport Elks Lodge! Because of you, hundreds of children will have gifts for the holidays. A special thanks to everyone who donated! I want to thank the people who volunteer their time and resources for the many needed activities in our communities. Also, those who work diligently to cover end of the year vacations in any business, seasonal staff who often work long and sometimes thankless hours, and our emergency and road crews who work through the night to keep us safe, a big THANK YOU! For at least 20 years I have avoided going to the dentist because of fear. Needless to say I needed a lot of dental work done. I was having a lot of pain, and that’s when I found White

Spruce Dental. They were professional and caring, but most of all they did not criticize me for neglecting my teeth. I am no longer afraid of going to the dentist, which is huge for me! This year, I was diagnosed with a form of leukemia. I have encountered many wonderful service providers along this journey that have been so kind to me during this time. From receptionists, doctors, customer service people at my insurance company, to my hair stylist who helped me cut my hair since it was falling out. I have been treated better than I ever have in my life. While I really appreciate people’s caring nature and friendly ways, I challenge this mindset at the same time. I shouldn’t be treated any differently because I have a disease. We are all fighting a battle of some sort in our lives. Your battle may not be my battle, but it’s important whatever it may be. Being kind to others is a selfish act for me since my diagnosis. I challenge you to see if you feel the same.

about abuse of animals by psycho killers who progress to committing these crimes on humans.

How long does it take to repair the bridges? This work has been going on for months and still isn’t totally completed yet. It seems that there is a mini crew taking their time on this job. Traffic is backed up due to lane closures all along this route and sometimes no work is even taking place at all. It sure seems like this small crew of workers is taking their sweet time with little regard to the motorists trying to get to work or home after work. Everyone knows we can avoid offensive sites, but there is one thing I don’t understand. A site I used to enjoy has so many beautiful photos of flowers and my greatest love, animals. I was browsing baby animals and the most gruesome photos were included in this pin. It only took one to get me weeping and turning off my computer, although there were many more. Cruelty is not normal. We all know

To the person who vented in the last Penny Saver about having to spend $0.02 for an envelope and $0.46 for a stamp to pay your High School tax: If you are leaving NYS because of $0.48 it sounds like you have a first world problem. Also it seems that you are paying all of your bills with checks since you emphasized that you didn’t get a return envelope as you do with your other bills. Welcome to 2016 where we have this thing called the internet. You’re squawking about paying $0.48 and threatening about being the next one to leave NYS... Feel free to leave. Trust me... the money you pay for your high school taxes and $0.48 to pay the bill to send in your archaic check won’t be missed. Ciao! Can the village and water / sewer please fix the manhole covers? The last paving by the village added too much material without having the manholes covers raised. My car will be out of alignment or someone will swerve and hit oncoming traffic.

Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer’s day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time. ~J. Lubbock

A Down-to-Earth Guide to Home Heating and Cooling A better way to heat and cool is right under your feet (Family Features) Increasing energy costs have many homeowners looking for new ways to save money. According to the Department of Energy, the average homeowner pays about $1,900 a year on utilities, most of it going toward heating and cooling bills. Adding insulation and sealing ducts can help, but what can be done to make some significant, long-term savings? A growing number of homeowners are finding savings in their own back yards by utilizing the earth’s natural energy to heat and cool their homes. It’s called geothermal energy - and it can save you some green while you’re going green. Geothermal Energy Geothermal systems - also known as ground source heat pump systems (GSHPS) or geothermal heat pumps (GHPs) have been around for decades but are just now coming to the attention of many homeowners. The Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency have both endorsed ground source heat pump systems as among the most energy-efficient and environmentally friendly heating, cooling and water heating systems available. How It Works The temperature of the earth below the surface - from a few feet to hundreds of feet down - is moderate and fairly constant. In many places it stays in the mid- to upper-50s all year. Instead of burning fossil fuels, a geothermal heat pump absorbs the energy stored in the earth to heat a home in the winter. In the summertime a heat pump rejects the heat from the space and transfers it back into the earth - making it extremely efficient and costeffective. To make it work, you need three basic elements: an underground loop system, a geothermal heat pump, and an air-delivery system. • Loop System: This is a system of high-density polyethylene plastic pipes buried in the ground. They are filled with fluid, a mixture of water and antifreeze, that circulates throughout the pipes. Open-loop systems circulate water drawn from a well. • Geothermal Heat Pump: The geothermal heat pump extracts heat from the fluid within the loop using a vapor-compression refrigeration cycle. This heat is then sent into the home. In the summer, it extracts heat from the indoor air and transfers it to the fluid, which cools as it circulates through the loop. • Air-delivery System: Most geothermal pumps use an electrically driven fan to distribute the air through ducts in the home. A residential system can also be equipped to heat household water, as well. According to the International Ground Source Heat Pump Association, a geothermal system has efficiencies 50 to 70 percent higher than other heating systems, and cooling efficiencies 20 to 40 percent higher than available air conditioners. That means direct savings on home utility bills. High-density polyethylene plastic pipes buried in the ground are filled with circulating fluid that absorbs the ground’s heat and brings it indoors.

Answering Questions About Continuing Education Adults go back to school for a variety of reasons. They may have personal accomplishment goals or their motivation could be purely financial. Unemployment has recently led many individuals back to the classroom. Many colleges and universities report that re-entry or adult students are the new majority on campus. Adults ages 25 to 69 are increasingly enrolling in courses around the country. Going back to school is a serious undertaking. Not only is it an investment of time, but it is also an investment of money. For those thinking about going back to school, consider these questions. 1. Is now the right time? Those going back to school because they think it might provide better job prospects or yield higher salaries could be mistaken. Many employers are cutting continuing-education grants and scaling back on hires with advanced degrees. That’s because companies are feeling the heat of the recession as well. Advanced degrees generally mean having to pay an employee a higher salary, something many companies are not in a position to do right now. Therefore, an advanced degree might prove a hindrance in today’s job market and not become the financial windfall some students expect. If this is the case, delaying an advanced degree for a few years may be a more financially sound idea. 2. What are your goals? Individuals need to examine their long- and short-term goals regarding education. Goals should include whether time is available to complete the degree. Some degrees can take months or years to finish, depending on how many credits a person already has. Is the goal to receive a completely different degree and begin a new career? If so, adults should put it down on paper so they have a definite goal in sight. 3. Are the finances available? Attending school is no small undertaking. Whether a public, private or online school, tuition can cost several thousand dollars per year. Tests taken to be accepted to school can cost money, and books will be needed for coursework. If money is tight right now, continuing school may not be the best option, especially if high-interest loans are the only viable means to continuing education. However, if the finances are there and school won’t detract from other bills, then school might be the right choice. 4. What is the right school? Those who have a full-time job can look into a school that offers evening or weekend classes. Many schools now offer online courses that allow individuals to take classes remotely. There is a growing interest in schools that specifically specialize in online degrees. Such schools enable students to take classes on their own time and complete assignments in a manner that’s less time-specific. Continuing students who may not have a spouse or children can move around to the school of choice. Once again, finances figure to play a major role when deciding on a school. 5. Is a college degree really necessary? For many, continuing education doesn’t mean heading to a college campus. It can involve taking certificate programs and vocational training.
