Students in the ADEPT program at Fairport High School show the three barrels of food they collected as part of a food drive to help support Foodlink, in December.
Students in Ms. McGrath’s and Mrs. Burgess’s ADEPT (Accessing and Developing Employment, Personal and Transitions skills) classes at Fairport High School (FHS) recently hosted a food drive for the Foodlink BackPack Program. As a result, the class was able to donate three full barrels of food and was awarded third place during the Tops Markets Food for Families Weigh-In Challenge this month to help support tens of thousands of children in the 10-county service area who receive free or reduced-price meals at school. “Our students were amazing as they created and displayed posters all over the school, were part of the morning announcements each day

publicizing the project and encouraging donations, along with collecting and graphing the food we collected,” said FHS Special Education Teacher Assistant Julie Vaisey. Vaisey said students will be visiting Foodlink in early 2017 to help assemble the backpacks in an effort for students to see the process from start to finish. Foodlink is a regional food hub and the Feeding America food bank serves 10 counties around the region. In the 2015-16 school year, the BackPack Program served more than 4,000 children and distributed nearly 45,000 bags of food.

(NewsUSA) - Tip #1 for Renting * Look at the numbers. Renting might not be the best option. If you’re going to lose money each month, it might make more sense to sell, even if you won’t get your asking price. Consider all potential costs, including property taxes, income taxes on your tenants’ rent, maintenance, and the normal wear and tear your property will experience. Remember that you won’t be able to pocket all of the rent money; you will have to put a portion of it back into the property.

The 2011 Food and Health Survey, commissioned by the International Food Information Council Foundation (IFICF), found that approximately half of Americans perceive their overall diet as at least “somewhat healthful,” the World Health Organization ranks the United States as 18th (out of 153 countries) in the world for obesity and 28th in the world for cases of diabetes.
DEAR DR. ROACH: Could you please explain the difference between irritable bowel syndrome and irritable bowel disease? What is the treatment for each? I saw in a health magazine that there is a blood test to determine which one someone may have. -- ES ANSWER: Although the two names are very similar, the conditions are very different. Irritable bowel syndrome is a common condition, more frequent in women than in men, of abdominal discomfort and bowel changes, such as diarrhea and/or constipation. It is managed by diet (such as the low-FODMAP diet I have recommended several times), stress management and sometimes medications. It can cause significant changes in one’s social life, in addition to pain and discomfort. IBS is a clinical diagnosis, and there is no blood test to confirm it. Primary-care doctors manage IBS, and severe cases may benefit from the care of a gastroenterologist. Irritable bowel disease -- of which there are two types: ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease -- is a potentially life-threatening condition of the GI tract. In ulcerative colitis, there is inflammation that’s limited to the colon, whereas in Crohn’s disease, the inflammation can be in any part of the GI tract, from the lip to the anus, though it is most frequent in the far end of the small bowel and the colon. IBD should be managed by a gastroenterologist, preferably one with special expertise in these diseases. IBD usually is diagnosed by colonoscopy or other endoscopy with biopsy. Many blood tests can be abnormal in IBD, but only the pathologist’s report is definitive. Most people with IBD will need medication treatment, although symptoms and therefore treatment may change dramatically across time. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 83 and recently began having sciatica pain down my right thigh. My doctor recommended using a hotwater bottle. Are there any painkillers I can use? Are there any other products I can use? -- G.L.B. ANSWER: The sciatic nerve is a very large nerve that runs down the back of the leg. When the nerve is pressed on in the back -from a herniated disk in the back or from spinal stenosis -- there can be intense pain that feels like it is coming from the back, or anywhere from the top of the thigh to the foot. Since other nerves besides the sciatic can be affected, the condition is called lumbar radiculopathy. A herniated disk is when the shock-absorbing material in between the vertebrae comes out into the space where the nerve root is, on its way out of the spinal column toward the leg. Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the bony canal through which the nerve travels. In most cases, people get better within four to six weeks. Standard pain medications, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen, can be helpful. If pain is severe and not responsive, there are other treatments, including a short course of steroids and narcotics, which should be given only during that initial period of pain. Pain that persists for a longer period of time, or pain with weakness, especially with progressive symptoms, needs expert evaluation. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. Having fun in the first snow of the season!
Helen Nguyen and Michael Dawe in front of Genesee Brewery’s clever Christmas keg tree.
My name is Duncan and I found my parents when I was only 10 weeks old. They have shown me just how “cool” life can be when there is unconditional love. Besides lying in bed and snuggling with mom & dad, I love playing in the snow, so much that my mom and dad bought me my own coat and boots so I don’t get too cold playing outside…just don’t tell them I lost a boot! Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it as the “POW.” Featured pets will be entered in the Pet of the Year Contest and become eligible to win a gift. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. For return of photos, please include a selfaddressed, stamped envelope. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

Assistive devices help people remain mobile Disabilities affect people from all walks of life. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that around 55 million Americans have a disability of some kind. Of these people, 33 million have a disability that makes it difficult for them to carry out some daily activities. Statistics Canada states that, as of 2012, 13.7 percent of the population age 15 years or older reported having a disability that could impact daily life. People with disabilities may need assistive devices to reclaim some measure of their independence. For example, millions of people rely on wheelchairs or walking aids to get around. These are called assistive technology and rehabilitative devices, which include tools, equipment or products that can help people with disabilities get around more easily. These devices may be as small as magnifying glasses for reading to as large as wheelchairs. The National Institutes of Health state that 2.2 million people in the U.S depend on wheelchairs for day-to-day tasks and mobility. More than six million use canes, walkers or crutches to assist with mobility. The following are some of the common types of mobility devices available for purchase. · Canes: Canes are handheld devices that provide a little extra stability or support to weakened limbs. Canes are easily transported and can assist those who need only a little help. · Standard walkers: Also known as medical walkers, standard walkers offer substantial support and must be lifted
MOMENTS IN TIME • The History Channel • On Jan. 14, 1942, President Franklin Roosevelt issues Proclamation No. 2537, requiring aliens from World War II-enemy countries -- Italy, Germany and Japan -- to register with the Department of Justice. Under increasing pressure from California politicians and others, Roosevelt also signed an executive order to remove all Japanese Americans to internment camps.

to move. That requires upper body strength, which can be difficult for some to maintain on long trips. · Rolling walkers: Rolling walkers are similar to standard walkers. But rolling walkers have wheels, either on the front only or on both sets of legs. They are somewhat less stable than standard walkers. Rolling walkers with wheel-locking devices may offer stability when needed. Some rolling walkers are called “rollators.” · Wheelchairs: Standard wheelchairs must be powered by the person in the chair or by someone pushing it from behind. This can be difficult for people with minimal upper body strength. Mechanical wheelchairs are powered with a lever or button. Some people may opt for motorized scooters over bulkier wheelchairs when possible. Assistive devices can be highly effective, but only when they are used properly and safely. Assistive devices should be measured for each user. Many walkers are height-adjustable. The width of a device also is important. A walker or another device that is too wide can affect mobility or require modifications to be made around the home. Weight is another consideration. The device should be lightweight so it can be maneuvered, but also weigh enough to provide enough stability to keep users upright. Users should proceed slowly and favor their stronger sides when relying on canes or walkers. Devices should not be used to climb atop other items like step stools. Children should not be allowed to play with or ride on assistive devices. If there are safety belts or locks on any assistive technology, they should be put in place before use to prevent further injury.

What a blessing it was to have the Classical Conversations group visit the Genesee County Nursing Home. The residents thoroughly enjoyed the caroling, cards and poinsettia pins. Thank you for spreading Christmas cheer! My car was stuck in a snow bank last night in absolute awful weather. Even though seeing right in front of you was difficult, two people stopped and made sure I was okay. When we live in a world where everyone has a cell phone, we often think not to stop – how much more are we going to be able to help this person when they have probably called someone and are getting help already? Well, I will think to stop next time because it was reassuring, especially since I was out on rural roads with nothing nearby. Thank you to all who stop and offer to help when they see someone stranded as well as those who tow out our cars and brave the storms to help others. You are all appreciated! Nicole Darrow, Holley To the Caring Residents and Businesses of Avon – Thank you for all the support you give to the Avon Food Pantry! A big thank you to Jennifer, who is now heading the operation, and to Chris for the work she has done. There are so many businesses and residents who give so much to help the ones less fortunate. I’ve lived in Avon for 78 years and have seen how caring the community is – what a blessing! Also, thank you Lions Club, for your gracious support. Thank you everyone! You know who you are! Merry Christmas & God Bless You All! Louie To Merri Mathes, Thank you for your dedication, caring, hard work and enthusiasm in making the Adventures 4-H Club AMAZING every year! The Palmer/Rusin Family!
I love this time of year. Laughs are less about being nervous and more about genuine joy. Hugs are given with a harder squeeze. Thanks are said with meaning and not just to be polite. Surprises are found hidden in candy-filled Christmas mugs. More hands are lent to those in need. Don’t stop, you kind & wonderful people, keep bringing happiness and encouragement. It’s contagious. ~Anonymous I want to thank the Good Samaritan who brushed all the snow off my truck this morning. It was a pleasant surprise after all the snow we had received the night before. Thank you again for your kindness! May you have the happiest of holidays and a blessed new year. A heartfelt thank you to the Livonia Ambulance, Livingston County EMS Medics, Noyes Memorial & Strong Hospital Emergency Departments along with the all the staff of the 6th floor 1200 unit at Strong Hospital for the care provided to our mother Diane Dillon on her recent stay. May you all have a blessed holiday season and Happy New Year 2017! Lynn, Ron & Jason Forrester A special thank you to everyone who helped put on the Christmas party at the Community Free Library in Holley on December 2nd. It was a special event and we love our library! What a wonderful blessing it is for the community!

Call 226-8111, 343-3111, 393-1111 or 637-5100 BE SAFE, HEALTHY AND HAPPY IN THE WORKPLACE WHILE PREGNANT Under the Family and Medical Leave Act, women in the United States are entitled to 12 weeks maternity leave. Women can choose to use a portion of that maternity leave even before their children are born if physical limitations are making it challenging for them to continue working. Women should put their health and the safety of their unborn children ahead of their responsibilities at work. In addition, women should not hesitate to speak with their employers about their comfort levels while pregnant. If an issue arises, speak with your boss, who deserves the benefit of the doubt. In some instances, breastfeeding also is protected by law at job sites or at the office. It is best for women to familiarize themselves with breastfeeding policies ahead of time so they can make the proper accommodations. Pregnant women should discuss with their doctors which work activities are permissable and which should be avoided at particular times in the pregnancy. Every effort should be made to avoid toxic substances, and pregnant women should not lift heavy items or engage in any potentially risky physical activity. For more information about workplace rights, visit the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission at www.eeoc.gov.
It doesn’t matter how many times you fail. It doesn’t matter how many times you almost get it right. No one is going to know or care about your failures, and neither should you. All you have to do is learn from them and those around you because... All that matters in business is that you get it right once. Then everyone can tell you how lucky you are. ~Mark Cuban
