One doesn’t have to be a famous movie producer or sports star to donate assets to charity in wills. Individuals sometimes make the choice to leave a portion of their estate to a favorite charity to create a legacy that helps the unfortunate. Such a decision may surprise family members, so it may be wise to discuss plans when drafting wills and ensuring that the correct method of bequeathing estates to charities is followed. When a will is written, it is typically in a person’s best interest to consult with an estate-planning attorney prior to making any decisions. When working in conjunction with a financial planner, an attorney can help you grow your estate and ensure your assets will be distributed according to your wishes.

DON’T MISTAKE A SHAMROCK FOR A CLOVER All shamrocks are clovers, but not all clovers are shamrocks. The home and garden resource The Spruce indicates that the term “shamrock” comes from the Gaelic word seamrog, meaning “little clover.” There is no consensus as to which species of clover is the true shamrock. However, many botanists agree that the white clover (Trifolium repens) is the shamrock. However, the lesser trefoil, or hop clover, the black medick and red clover all can be contenders. Four-leafed clovers of any variety are not shamrocks and should not be portrayed as such. That is because the shamrock is a three-leafed sprout that was believed to be utilized by St. Patrick to demonstrate the principle behind the Holy Trinity. St. Patrick, pointing to the three leaflets united by a common stalk, used this visual analogy to spell out the mystery of Christianity’s doctrine of three entities making up one Lord: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Therefore, for all of the purported good luck finding a four-leaf clover may bring - based on mythology imparted by ancient Celts called Druids - it cannot be passed off as a shamrock.

Churchville-Chili’s Churchville Elementary & Chestnut Ridge Schools Go All In for 2022 Kid’s Heart Challenge BY AMANDA PULEO

C

hurchville-Chili elementary school students once again took the American Heart Association’s (AHA) Kids Heart Challenge: learning how to develop hearthealthy habits. The challenge is a longstanding tradition for students at both Churchville Elementary School (CES) and Chestnut Ridge Elementary School (CRS). This year, each school celebrated a bit differently, but everyone had a great time. Thanks to the incredible generosity of the Churchville community, both schools raised impressive donations for the AHA that will benefit local friends and neighbors.

• At Churchville Elementary, students school-wide participated in special activities in physical education classes. A remarkable 158 students volunteered to fundraise for the AHA, and they surpassed the school’s $10,000 goal with a grand total of $25,420.98 – the school’s highest total in their 21 years of participation. • As Chestnut Ridge carefully launched its first Kids Heart Challenge since the pandemic began, activities were limited to grades 2-4. The gym was transformed for two weeks into the Kids Heart Challenge Fitness Center with a variety of special equipment. Students were offered “Challenge by Choice,” a concept that gave them full ownership of their own workout plans. They planned balanced workouts by focusing on the four components of health-related fitness: cardiovascular endurance, muscle endurance, muscle strength and flexibility. Students enjoyed the activities and by the end of the challenge, they had raised over $10,000 for the AHA. Chestnut Ridge School, like CES, has also taken part in the AHA campaign for over 20 years. In 2012, the school was the top fundraiser in the nation. This year’s campaign was managed by longtime organizers PE teachers Greg Kincaid and Brooke Elnicky. Elnicky said, “Kids Heart Challenge is a great service learning program. It teaches students that being active and having good habits can be fun and keep them healthy. They learn that they can help save lives in their own community by raising money to support research, education and services used by peers and local families.” Students at Churchville Elementary had an extra treat - a special assembly on Feb. 15 - to recognize their success. The school’s two honorary Heart Heroes, students Aubrey and Ellianna, were acknowledged: The two had inspired classmates with their personal stories of coping with difficult heart problems. AHA representative William Mitchell was on hand to thank students

for their efforts and hard work. Top fundraisers were also named, each collecting more than $1,000 for the cause: Madelyn will enjoy being Assistant Principal for the Day, while Principal David Johnson will cede his title (and office desk) twice, to first-place winner Emma and second-place campaigner Evelyn – Principals for the Day. The highlight of the assembly was the choosing of five students who lined up with whipped cream pies and happily pushed them into the faces of PE teachers and program coordinators Bethany Matsko and Chester Palozzi along with teacher Kristina Zito, Assistant Principal Kim Giancursio and of course, Principal Johnson.

Johnson said, “It’s wonderful to see our students take part in all the heart-healthy races and exercises and learn about citizenship and making a difference. But it’s astounding to see how seriously they take this opportunity to help others, and it is truly inspiring to see how our families support their efforts.” More than 3,000 schools nationwide participate in the Kids Heart Challenge programs. The events are fun, promote sports and fitness, educate students in the risks of heart disease and stroke, and help lay the groundwork for life-long community activism and volunteering. Both Churchville Elementary and Chestnut Ridge schools have participated for many years and consistently place in the top echelon of the state’s fundraising schools.

DID YOU KNOW? Thought they might be most often associated with dogs, ticks can affect cats as well. According to Blue Cross for Pets, cats are most likely to encounter ticks if they live near areas with lots of deer and sheep or in regions where other wildlife, such as hedgehogs and rabbits, are present. While ticks are active throughout the year, cats are most likely to encounter them between spring and autumn. That’s due in part to the climate during these seasons, which tends to be warmer and therefore more inviting to cats, compelling them to spend more time outdoors than they do in winter. Ticks, which are egg-shaped, are big enough to spot, so cat owners should conduct a careful examination of their cats’ fur each time they come into the house after spending time in the yard. Blue Cross for Pets notes that ticks feel like small bumps on a cat’s skin. Ticks are most likely to attach themselves to particular areas of a cat’s body. These areas include the head, neck, ears, and feet. Routine brushing, especially whenever cats come inside after time spent outdoors, can help cat owners spot and remove ticks from their cats. It’s important to recognize that indoor cats are not invulnerable to ticks, as other pets and humans can track ticks indoors. Periodic inspections and brushing of indoor cats’ can protect them from ticks and the diseases ticks carry.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT SAINT PATRICK Despite growing up in a family with strong ties to organized religion, Saint Patrick himself was not raised in a particularly religious household. Though his grandfather was a member of the clergy and his mother was a close relative of St. Martin of Tours, Saint Patrick’s childhood home was not especially religious nor was it one that placed a strong emphasis on education. In fact, Saint Patrick admitted later in life that his lack of formal education had long been a source of embarrassment for him. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

GENERAL CONTRACTING EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED WHEN RENOVATING Dirt and noise: Homeowners can count on dust, debris and noise throughout the renovation process. Dust appears when walls come down or go up, and construction teams typically erect temporary walls or tarps to contain the debris. Air filtering systems also can limit dust particles. Noise is unavoidable. If it becomes troublesome, arrange to be outside of the home when the bulk of the construction is taking place.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

February is merely as long as is needed to pass the time until March. ~J.R. Stockton

By Keith Roach, M.D.

---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I just read another sad story about a woman who had breast cancer, fought it and seemed to win, but after five years, it came back and took her life. The same sequence of events happened to my wife two years ago. She fought the second round of cancer for a year and a half, but it was just about everywhere. What is this connection between the initial breast cancer occurrence and it coming back five or six years later even more widespread throughout the body? Is screening stepped up during that period? -- Anon. ANSWER: I am very sorry to hear about your wife. With most cancers, no evidence of disease five years out from diagnosis usually means a cure, that the person will not have a recurrence of that particular cancer, although people who’ve had one cancer are at a higher risk of developing a second, unrelated cancer. Breast cancer is one of the exceptions. Late recurrences (after five years) are possible, even very late recurrences. I have seen 20 years afterward, and there are reports of even longer. Although the reasons why breast cancer seems to hide for many years are not known precisely, we do know some risk factors for recurrence: Larger tumors are more likely to recur. Those with positive lymph nodes are at high risk, and women with estrogen receptor positive, progesterone receptor positive and HER2 negative tumors are more likely to experience recurrence. Screening is absolutely appropriate in women who have had breast cancer. There is not a consensus about the type and frequency of screening, but many experts choose yearly mammography. Breast MRI has been considered, but it has not been proven to be better in women with a history of breast cancer. A healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise, a diet with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, abstinence from smoking and minimal alcohol intake, has been shown to reduce cancer risk in women with a history of breast cancer. ***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2021 North America Synd., Inc., All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Stomach pains, bloating and trouble with digestion affect people on occasion, particularly after a rich and heavy meal. However, when symptoms of gastrointestinal upset are prolonged or occur frequently, it may be a sign of irritable bowel syndrome, also called IBS. IBS, according to the Mayo Clinic, is a common disorder that affects the large intestine. Symptoms can include abdominal pain, gas, diarrhea or constipation, bloating, and more. Between 3 and 20 percent of Americans experience IBS symptoms, and the condition affects more women than men. While some people may experience minor, manageable symptoms, others may deal with side effects that affect their daily lives. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease says doctors are not sure what causes IBS. Muscle contractions in the intestine that are stronger than normal can play a role. In addition, the Mayo Clinic notes that abnormalities in the nerves that impact the digestive system can cause greater than normal discomfort from the abdomen stretching from gas or stool. As a result, poorly coordinated signals between the brain and the intestines can cause the body to overreact. Furthermore, inflammation and changes in gut microflora also can play roles in IBS. Doctors will look for a certain patterns in symptoms to rule out other conditions before diagnosing IBS. Women who experience IBS tend to have symptoms around the time of menstruation, or they may have more symptoms during this time, offers the health and wellness guide Healthline. Symptoms may be triggered by hormones.

WHAT IS IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME?

A series of treatments is typically prescribed to help people with IBS experience less discomfort. Individuals may have to avoid certain foods and beverages. Increased stress can lead to flareups of IBS, so finding ways to reduce stress also is key. Routine exercise, eating small meals and taking probiotics also may go a long way toward taming IBS symptoms. The symptoms of IBS are unpleasant but manageable. Men and women with intestinal issues are urged to bring those issues to the attention of their physicians. Page 11

DEBUNKING MYTHS ABOUT IRISH CULTURE The Irish are not enamored with leprechauns. Come St. Patrick’s Day, leprechauns are purported to be mischief makers who can rev-up the fun. But within Ireland, the only places you’re liable to find leprechauns is in tourist gift shops. In fact, while the origins of leprechauns may date back to ancient Ireland, many people now believe the image of the fighting, illtempered leprechaun is offensive to the Irish people.

OVERCOME YOUR PADDY’S DAY HANGOVER Consume electrolytes. According to Merck Source, alcohol interferes with the liver and pancreas, which can result in an imbalance of electrolytes. Electrolytes affect various parts of your body, including muscle function and other important processes. The medical resource Everyday Health notes that consuming electrolyte-rich beverages, including sports drinks, can restore the salt and potassium lost as a result of consuming alcohol.

I hear the sparrow’s ditty Anear my study door; A simple song of gladness That winter days are o’er; My heart is singing with him, I love him more and more.... Oh, Spring is surely coming, Her couriers fill the air; Each morn are new arrivals, Each night her ways prepare; I scent her fragrant garments, Her foot is on the stair. ~John Burroughs (1837–1921), “A March Glee,” c.1902

M aintain tire balance and alignment for a smooth ride Balancing tires involves equalizing the w eight of the combined tire and w heel assembly so that each tire spins smoothly on the road. Tires are mounted on the w heel assembly, and the chances of this assembly having precise w eight distribution is nearly impossible w ithout a little help. According to Discount Tire, the slightest imbalance in the tires, even as little as half an ounce, can be felt by drivers. Unequal mass can make tires w obble, causing noticeable vibrations. M echanics w ill test tire balance by putting it on a balancing machine. The machine w ill spin the tire and determine the tire’s heaviest point. Counteracting w eights w ill be placed on the tire hubs to create a more uniform balance of w eight. Lead w eights are often used, but some are being phased out for other metals, such as zinc, because of the medical and environmental implications of lead. Tires that are not balanced w ill not only cause vibration, they also can lead to uneven w ear.

GEORGIA ON MY MIND

MUST-HAVES FOR YOUR PADDY’S DAY PARTY When it comes to St. Patrick’s Day, cuisine, hosts should not overlook the importance of providing some staples that people have grown to expect on March 17. Corned beef and cabbage might not be the most authentic Irish meal, but it’s become synonymous with St. Patrick’s Day celebrations and therefore earned its place on your Paddy’s Day menu. Hosts can start the day off right by whipping up a pre-parade traditional Irish breakfast, complete with eggs, Irish bacon, white and black pudding, and brown bread. Hosts need not feel beholden to cuisine exclusive to Ireland or those that have become synonymous with St. Patrick’s Day, but making sure at least one such dish is available is guaranteed to please your guests. S E V RA Above & Beyond While my husband and I were at Maple Tree Inn this past weekend, we happened to witness a business that went above and beyond for a customer who was in great distress. They didn’t have to do what they did, and most businesses wouldn’t have. It was very heartwarming to see, and I for one applaud them. A great example of customer service and compassion. My Fair Lady Cheers to the Rochester Broadway Theatre League for bringing to Rochester the musical “My Fair Lady.” What a wonderful show it was, and I liked it even better than the original movie! It was that good! March Madness What a wonderful time of year it is for all of us hoop fans - it’s March Madness! Shout Out! Shout out to all of the fire, EMT, and other emergency responders for their hard work during the wind storm on Sunday. You are appreciated!

No Denying I’m confused regarding this back and forth about global warming. Who’s denying it? We all know it’s changing. The only question is how much does man really impact these changes? Sure, there’s a lot we can do to lessen our impact, but the changes of warming and cooling have been proven over and over again to be a part of our planet’s history. So, who’s denying it? Local Dog Walker It is great that you pick up after your dog when you walk our local neighborhood. However, it would be really great if you also took that little black bag back home with you! Today while walking, one of the people in the neighborhood put your 10 bags (yes 10 bags), in the middle of the sidewalk and this from just a short distance of a walk for most of us. We are all looking for you, and when we find you, the local police and dog warden will also know you. Why is it so hard to take the bag back home with you like a responsible person? The people’s lawns that you leave the little packages on are really tired of them. There is a law, you know, and you are not above it. We know it is from one person, and everyone is on the look out for you. Clean up and take your bags home. This is also your neighborhood, but you are not a good neighbor, that is for sure. Choices In response to Choose One: No, we should use either paper or plastic, metal or glass wherever appropriate. Paper bags, plastic cars? Yes, I hate to see a tree come down, but trees (and wood and paper) are renewable resources; oil is not. Paper is biodegradable; plastic is not. It’s that simple. We should choose the ones that are least damaging to the environment case by case.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

He stands like a warder stout and strong, In the open gate of the year... ~J.J. Britton (1832–1913), “March”

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Lettuce will last longer if you store it in the crisper drawer in a clean paper bag. * “Try using an empty glass wine bottle (remove the label) for rolling out pie crust or any dough. It is the best thing I’ve ever used ... nothing sticks to the glass, unlike my wooden rolling pin, which is now in the back of my cabinet for good after using it for decades!” -- L.F. in Texas * Peas, spinach, sweet potato, squash and carrots can be pureed and added to baked goods to increase fiber and nutrients. They are especially useful in soups to thicken a broth without adding fat. You can sneak some veggies into unexpected places, too -- like cookies, pancake batter and pasta dishes, or make a flavorful sandwich spread. * “When you get a new pair of running shoes, treat the insides with spray starch. We have always done this, and it keeps them fresher longer.” -- S.M. in Indiana * Tubes make it easy to access toothpaste when they are full, but it’s sometimes hard to get that last bit out. Here’s a tip from C.W. in Oregon: “To get the last bit of a tube of toothpaste to come out, run the tube under warm water for a few seconds. Surrendering a Pet DEAR PAW’S CORNER: When my grandmother passed away last fall, she left behind two beautiful cats. No one else in the family wanted to take care of them, so I took them in. However, I’m financially unable to care for them long-term, and the apartment complex I live in does not allow pets. I’m on borrowed time (and money) at this point, and praying that my apartment manager doesn’t find out about the cats. I contacted a shelter nearby to find out if they will accept the cats. They said there is a “surrender fee” of $200. No way can I pay that; I’m on a fixed income. What alternatives do I have? -- Sherrie R., via email

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * “Mbuki-mvuki” is a Bantu word for the irresistible urge to strip off your clothes while dancing. * The Saturday falling closest to April 1 is International Tom Hanks Day. * There are more English speakers in China than in the United States. * In 1994, a man was arrested for dressing as the Grim Reaper and standing and staring into the windows of a home for the elderly.

DEAR SHERRIE: I’m sorry to hear about your predicament. You have extended your home and finances to care for two cats in need, and I salute you for it. But you’re right: the current situation is not ideal for you or the cats. When preparing to surrender a pet, the receiving shelter will request that you try every possible option first. Many shelters will provide advice and limited assistance for pet owners going through this. One option would be for you to contact family members and friends directly (not on public social media posts) to ask if they would be able to adopt the cats. If a surrender to the shelter is the last resort, contact your family to see if they can chip in for the surrender fees. After all, you’ve already taken on the cost of food, supplies and maybe medical care for them. You’ve taken on the risk of losing your lease, too. Speak calmly with your relatives about sharing the cost. Best of luck. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles

Before You Sign Up for Senior Discounts We all want to save a dollar every place we can. Discounts aimed at seniors are a good way to get our attention, but now and then it’s just not a good idea to sign up. For example, if you’re low income, Amazon Prime offers a reduced-price membership. With Prime you get free shipping, access to movies and music, and more. Your membership is only $5.95 per month -- after you furnish an image of your Social Security, Medicaid (not Medicare), TANF or SNAP card. You’ll need to renew this every year to keep getting the discount to ensure you’re still on the program. You can stay on this reduced rate for four years. The dilemma is that you’re providing your personal information -- Medicaid number, Social Security number and so on -- to people you don’t know. Where does that information end up? If you cancel your membership, is that information destroyed? Reduced prescription costs are available at certain drugstore chains, but generally on a limited basis, perhaps one day per month. One chain will offer to let you link a new account with them to your existing AARP membership. With another one, should you prefer not to give them your email address, they’re more than happy to take your name and phone number instead. A number of phone companies have reduced plans for seniors. But they do verify your age. With two of them you need to go into the store with a valid ID. With another they’ll use the information they already have on file from when you started your original service with them. How

securely have they kept that information? Before you snap up a senior discount deal, consider what you need to give up to get that discount. Think about whether the information you give can be used for identity theft. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts from Money, CNN and The Motley Fool advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.

Current business owners and prospective owners can save substantial amounts of money and avoid wasting energy by giving ample thought to how much office space they truly need. Large office spaces may not be necessary for businesses that recently downsized staff, while those starting out may want to start in small spaces before upgrading to larger spaces if and when their businesses expand. Small business owners leasing their office space can speak with their leasing agents to determine if they can include a clause in their lease that allows them to move into larger spaces if the need arises before their existing leases expire. POLL How likely are you to give money towards Ukraine relief for food, clothing & shelter? • Yes! • No! Poll Ends 03-15-22 Poll Ended 03-08-22 Some say the United States should not send troops into the Russia-Ukraine conflict because allegedly Ukraine is of strategic importance to the United States, many Americans do not want a war, and the danger of a superpower confrontation. Considering the fragile state of Ukraine and in light of the already senseless loss of life with further atrocities expected from the Russian military, should the United States become involved militarily to defend Ukraine?

42% Yes! 58% No! We love hearing from you! Vote and make your voice heard when you visit www.gvpennysaver.com!
