585-349-4663 AUTOMATIC STANDBY GENERATORS CORNED BEEF & CABBAGE FOR ST. PATTY’S DAY Corned beef and cabbage might not be a part of many people’s diet regimens throughout the year. But come March 17, it’s not uncommon to find people from all walks of life indulging in this beloved meal. March 17 marks the celebration of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. Over the years, the day has also become a celebration of the Emerald Isle. Such celebrations tend to feature corned beef and cabbage, even though the dish may have little to do with Ireland (and even less to do with St. Patrick). The precise origins of the link between corned beef and St. Patrick’s Day remain a topic of debate, but some historians say the corned beef enjoyed today can be traced to New York City’s Irish immigrant population in the 19th and 20th centuries, who popularized a salted meat made from brisket that was then sold by Jewish butchers.

My sweetheart, Bambi

Murphy asks, “Is Football really over?”

Regardless of the authenticity of its link to Ireland, corned beef is delicious and many modern Paddy’s Day celebrants wouldn’t think of going without it on March 17.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Although you tend to bore easily and leave others to finish what you start, this is one time when you’d be wise to complete things on your own. Then you can move on to something new. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your indecision about a personal situation might come out of those mixed signals you’re getting. Best not to make any commitments until you have a better sense of how things are going. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A dispute appears to be getting out of hand. But you should be able to step in and bring it all under control soon. Be patient. News about a potential career move might be delayed. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Career obligations could interfere with important personal plans. But using a combination of common sense and compromise helps resolve the dilemma to everyone’s satisfaction. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) A stressful situation drains some of your energy reserves. But you soon bounce back in time to finish your tasks and enjoy a well-deserved weekend getaway. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) This is a good time to throw a party for friends and colleagues, and surprise them with your dazzling domestic skills. You also might want to reconsider that career move you put on hold. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A sudden change of mind by someone you relied on could cause a delay in moving ahead with your plans. But those whom you’ve helped out before are prepared to return the favor. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You start the week feeling too shy to speak up in front of others. However, your self-assurance soon takes over, giving you the confidence you need to make yourself heard. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) One way to deal with a pesky personal dilemma this week is to meet it head-on. Insist on an explanation of why the situation reached this point and what can be done to change it. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The creative Capricorn finds several outlets for her or his talents this week. Also note that while a romantic connection looks promising, remember to allow it to develop on its own. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) You stand out this week as the best friend a friend can have. But be careful that you don’t take too many bows, or you might see gratitude replaced with resentment. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) What seems to be an ideal investment should be checked out thoroughly before you snap at the offer and find yourself hooked by an expensive scam. BORN THIS WEEK: Your wisdom is matched by your generosity. You are a person who people know they can rely on. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

DID YOU KNOW? The Celtic cross is a symbol widely associated with Ireland, but many may not know the unique history and debate surrounding this unique and instantly recognizable symbol. The Celtic cross combines a cross with a circle surrounding its intersection, but other than that description, little can be confirmed about the origins of this symbol that some historians believe can be traced back to ancient paganism. Historical revisionist author and researcher Crichton E.M. Miller theorizes that the cross had more practical purposes than those subscribed to it today, serving as a navigational device used by ancient explorers and builders. One popular, though highly unlikely, theory regarding the origins of the Celtic cross is that it was introduced by St. Patrick, Ireland’s patron saint. This theory states that St. Patrick, or possibly St. Declan, combined the cross, which is the foremost symbol of Christianity, with the sun cross, a circular symbol traced to prehistoric cultures, in an attempt to illustrate the importance of the cross to the pagans he was attempting to convert. Though the exact origins of the Celtic cross and its meaning will likely never be known, there is no denying its endurance as a symbol and its ongoing association with Ireland.

Spencerport Chamber to Host Famous Author, Columnist and Former Presidential Speechwriter, Curt Smith

By Amanda Dudek

T

he Spencerport Area Chamber of Commerce has made it its mission to promote business, community, growth, and economic success throughout the Spencerport area. To that end, the Chamber, a nonprofit organization fueled 100% by volunteer efforts and driven by membership, does its best to offer valuable ways for its membership to get involved, be informed, and experience success. One such way is its annual awards dinner.

independent businesses and politics. His topic, entitled “2019: Donald Trump and the Democrats,” underscores his view. “My point will be that neither one of them, neither party, is really doing their job,” said Smith. Smith also intends to address business in New York State in particular. “Small business is not being represented,” he observed. Smith went on to say that a party concerned for local business should be “fighting tooth and nail in Albany for lower taxes, fewer regulations and a more competitive workplace” to give existing businesses “a more even playing field, enabling them to compete and thrive.” Curt Smith, well-known author, columnist, and former Presidential speechwriter

The annual Spencerport Area Chamber of Commerce awards dinner celebrates business owners in the community and provides business and community members alike a chance to meet and mingle and be inspired. There are four awards: the Citizen of the Year award, the Joyce Lobene Business Person or Business of the Year Award, the Civic Beautification Award and the Member of the Year award. The Chamber selects keynote speakers whose topics it believes will be of interest to attendees. This year’s guest speaker, Curt Smith, is a well-known author, columnist, and former Presidential speechwriter. Among his 17 books is his newest, The Presents and the Pastime: The History of Baseball and the White House. Prior books include George H.W. Bush: Character at the Core; Voices of the Game; and Pull Up a Chair: The Vin Scully Story. A talented communicator, Mr. Smith wrote more speeches than anyone else for George H. W. Bush during and after his Presidency, including Bush’s Pearl Harbor Address, Just War speech, and eulogy to Ronald Reagan. The former Gannett Company reporter and Saturday Evening Post reporter has written for, among others, Sports Illustrated, The New York Times and The Washington Post; appeared on ABC’s Nightline, CBS This Morning, and FOX News. He has been named to the Judson Welliver Society of Former Presidential Speechwriters. He is a senior senior of English at the University of Rochester, an Associated Press award-winning radio commentator, and a GateHouse Media columnist who has hosted series for the Smithsonian Institution, National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, and XM Satellite Radio. While active on an international level, Mr. Smith is particularly fond of Upstate New York, having grown up locally in Caledonia. Smith describes Caledonia and towns like it as “wonderful small towns – the backbone of this country.” Smith is also a SUNY at Geneseo graduate who lives with his wife Sarah and their two children in Gates. “I came back to Upstate from Washington, D.C. because I love it here,” Smith explained. “I could have stayed there, but I love this region. This is where I was born and raised.” Curt Smith’s local background and political experience have given him a unique perspective on the connection between local

Sadly, Smith does not see this happening. He said towns like his native Caledonia are withering on the vine. “Kids are leaving,” added Smith, who teaches at the University of Rochester. “They are going to the cities. We lose something important when that happens. What we are seeing is a result, in large part, to being ignored – even mocked in a sense – by leaders in Albany and Washington who have forgotten that small towns exist.” Smith said he has much more to share and hopes that those who attend will thoughtfully consider his remarks. For more information, visit www.spencerportchamber.org. The Spencerport Area Chamber of Commerce Awards Dinner will be held on March 21st at 6pm. Guests must register by March 15th. Have something interesting you’d like to share with our readers? Perhaps an original story, a personal experience, community happening, or school event? It had fallen out of my bag. I was so VERY GRATEFUL!! It was so encouraging to see the help that she gave, along with the help that Hegedorn’s had given by calling my phone also. I will be sure to respond, in the future, when I see a need.

Last Saturday when I was at Hegedorn’s in Webster, I realized that I had lost my phone. I went to the service desk to see if someone had turned it in. No one had turned it in. I started to retrace my steps in the store, when a very nice lady who overheard the conversation, said that she would call my phone and we could listen for the ring. When we didn’t hear it in the store, she suggested we go check my car. It was there!

It’s refreshing to see and read, and then realize that there’s someone at the “Genesee Valley Penny Saver” who respects and cares about the English language. Whether you call it “copy editing” or “proofreading,” the publication has an expert professional who knows a lot about correct spelling, syntax, and grammar. Easy on the eyes and brain, even though we’re talking about advertising here, your publication presents an errorfree reading experience!

To the Venters sick of line budgers - Those are our “privileged” shoppers, and we deal with their “I’m in a hurry” daily. Some customers are extremely impatient, and when the lines are long, the quiet remarks and huffing and puffing aren’t going to change a thing. They realize that but continue to complain anyway. Also, why customers feel that it’s no big deal to rip open packaging and leave merchandise everywhere is mind boggling. We’re talking adults here. Working retail was difficult this holiday season. Some customers are so miserable that I feel sorry for them. They are wasting a beautiful life being that way, but they shouldn’t take it out on the cashiers.

Many years ago, I bought 2 acres from a farmer who raised cows. We had a very enjoyable 12 years there. We had great neighbors. Yes, we had 2 to 4 days each year that we could smell the natural fertilizer being spread, when the wind was blowing in the right direction. No big deal. 363 days had air quality so pure you can’t find it anywhere in the city. We also had unchlorinated water that contained natural calcium. The worst noise pollution was on the very hot nights when we were trying to sleep. Boy, the crickets can be loud! My advice to anyone buying a house near a farm is to perform due diligence. Think about it. If a couple of days of odor will ruin your life, don’t buy near a farm. For all others, I

Neighbors happen out of our choices! I am grateful to have nice neighbors, but on top, our next-door neighbor is really like our lucky charm. Moving from TX, I bought my very first home, with a 200+yard driveway in beautiful SUMMER, forgetting about WINTER. I was confident I could learn it all despite being female and foreigner and being housetrapped with 2 kids was not in my imagination. Well, either this is the worst winter in a while, or it’s me experiencing the homeowner reality... The 1st snow storm, my John Deere was still in summer mode. The 2nd storm, without chains it could barely move. The 3rd storm, I got snow tires instead. The 4th storm, it finally works! Every time, our driveway is magically cleared because a

lovely neighbor “quietly” sent the elves over!!!

My husband and I go to a local restaurant for a fish fry. Last Friday, February 23rd, we went and the hostess came and asked us for our drink order, but most important is, she took extra time getting ready for work that day. She was dressed in long black pants and a real nice black top, very professional. Kudos, young lady. Stop by and see for yourself at Gunsmoke Restaurant. Diane & Norm Thank you to my wonderful neighbor Bob for keeping my driveway cleared out. It is appreciated.

say, enjoy! If life hadn’t interfered, we would still be in that house and on that land. This is to the person who complained about being wished “a happy holiday”. You need to think before making such a comment. Not everyone celebrates Christmas. Some are Jewish and celebrate Hanukkah; others may celebrate other religious holidays. Bottom line, not everyone celebrates Christmas. So as not to offend those whodon’t and because you may not know what they celebrate, wishing them “Happy Holidays” is very appropriate and considerate. To the person who wrote that wishing others a “Happy

Holiday” is insincere: There are a handful of holidays in December, some that are far older than Christmas. To insist on wishing one and all a “Merry Christmas” is insensitive and disrespectful. It becomes all about you. Wishing others a “Happy Holiday” indicates a generosity of spirit and an enlightened mind. It is an acknowledgment that other’s holidays are just as important to them as Christmas is to you. It is no more and no less valid than any other. Further, treating everyone equally does not indicate an attack on Christmas. Whatever holiday you are celebrating, I wish you a happy and safe one.

SIGHTS, SOUNDS AND SYMBOLS OF ST. PATRICK’S DAY St. Patrick’s Day celebrants who are not of Irish descent and/or those who have never visited Ireland may not know it, but the live music they may hear when entering a pub on St. Patrick’s Day is an integral part of the fabric of Irish culture. An Irish Seisiún typically finds a group of musicians gathered in a pub to play traditional Irish music, oftentimes while seated at a table among their audience. While many pubs reserve stage areas for their musicians on St. Patrick’s Day, the spirit of seisiún is still present, as musicians often interact with the audience. SPORTS QUIZ By Chris Richcreek 1. Age Healthier With These Five Tips (NAPS)—As your wisdom grows with age, so can the number of pill bottles in your medicine cabinet. For those “young-at-heart” seniors, sticking to healthy habits is the key to aging well. With some simple steps, you can keep a healthy routine that also gives you more time to do the things you love. Joe Koren, pharmacy manager at Walgreens, shares his top five tips for managing your health with a busy schedule: 1. Consult the experts You know to go for regular checkups with your general practitioner, but don’t forget that pharmacists can also be accessible experts to answer questions about your health. In fact, your pharmacist is a licensed professional who provides different health care services including immunizations and can help you understand why and how to take your medications to support effective treatment. Some pharmacies offer extended hours, and 24-hour chat with pharmacy staff is available whenever you need it. Many locations also have health care clinics to treat minor injuries and illness, which can be a convenient and cost-efficient alternative to a doctor’s visit. 2. Let your smartphone help you With a packed list of to-dos, friends to meet and grandchildren to watch, medication routines can easily slip the mind. Luckily, your mobile phone is a helpful tool to keep track of your medications, right in the palm of your hand. For example, the Walgreens app can help you set daily pill reminder notifications, so you never miss a dose. You can also find closeby health care providers and arrange a video call for a face-to-face consultation with a physician or specialist through the app. If using your smartphone comes with its challenges, ask one of the pharmacy staff or a family member to help set it up for you. 3. Simplify your prescription refills Multiple prescriptions can mean multiple trips to the pharmacy each month. A trained pharmacist can recommend convenient refill options such as aligning multiple refill trips to one single date, switching to 90day refills or having eligible prescriptions sent directly to your home. All these services can make it easier to stay on your medication schedule and help save time. 4. Find perks in your Medicare D plan So you’ve signed up for your Medicare Part D plan, but are you using it to save money? Fortunately, many prescription drug plans include Walgreens in their preferred pharmacy network, which could mean a convenient way to lower your co-pays. A little bit of research into the right combination of plan, provider and pharmacy can go a long way to help you save money. Walgreens pharmacies even conduct senior days, giving you extra advice on health care topics and special offers. 5. Maintain a healthy lifestyle They say age is only a number, and when you’re in control of your health, that’s very true! With the time and money you’ll save from these tips, think about how you can embark on and maintain an even healthier lifestyle. Why not challenge yourself to walk for at least 30 minutes a day, connect with friends and family, or take the time to prepare nutritious meals? These five small steps can all contribute to a healthier life, and free up time and head space for the things you really love. For additional information on tools to make medication management more convenient, visit www.walgreens.com/pharmacy. Your pharmacist may have more ways to save you time and money than you realize.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

In Hydration Game, Coffee Counts ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I drink a lot of coffee, about 80 ounces per day. I feel no ill effects and have no stomach discomfort, but my wife says water is better. A kidney specialist basically said, “fluid is fluid” and that as long as I am hydrated, coffee is fine. With studies showing that coffee has antioxidants and reduces certain cancers, what should I do? -- M.K. ANSWER: People with long memories may recall that in the early 1980s, coffee was linked to an increased risk of pancreatic cancer. However, the study has become a textbook example of poor design, and further studies have suggested that coffee drinking may be associated with lower risk of breast, prostate and oral cancers. I wouldn’t recommend drinking coffee just for this reason, as the effect size, if it really exists, is pretty small. As far as hydration goes, your kidney specialist is completely right. The caffeine in regular coffee is perceived as a diuretic (a substance that makes you urinate excessively), but that turns out to be myth as well, at least in regular coffee drinkers. One potential ill effect of caffeine is that it minimally decreases calcium absorption. However, this amounts to the equivalent of calcium in a tablespoon or two of milk, so it is unlikely to affect overall calcium balance significantly. Eighty ounces of coffee is a lot of caffeine, and some people will get jittery or have sleep disturbances. It also can have variable effects on gut motility (that’s a delicate way of saying that it commonly causes diarrhea, but it also can cause constipation). All that said, if you aren’t having any ill effects from drinking so much coffee, coffee is fine -- though I still think that, as your wife says, water is better for many people.

*** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 64-year-old male. I had a stroke and lost vision in my right eye in 2005. I am right-handed. I had very high blood pressure at the time, and it’s now under control with drugs. Since then, I can no longer wear polarized sunglasses. I have light-sensitive eyes, but most over-the-counter sunglasses are polarized. My ophthalmologist and other eye specialists tell me they’ve never heard of my problem occurring. With polarized glasses on, I see in 3-D. Blue lines in the roadway and sewer lids or any metal covering appear to be 3-D to me. I have to be careful stepping over the handicap space lines because they look like curbs. Have you ever heard of this, or am I unique? If I can locate nonpolarized lenses, then I have no problem. Thank you. -- J.O. ANSWER: While everyone is unique, this is a condition I have heard of before. In fact, I know people who deliberately watch television with one eye in order to enhance the 3-D effects. Polarized light does tend to accentuate lines and edges, so it doesn’t surprise me that with your one working eye you have an accentuated 3-D sensation -- your brain has learned to use cues that people with two working eyes might miss. In your case, the brain has interpreted things so strongly that you are having some optical illusions. Sadly, I don’t have any practical advice beyond finding nonpolarized lenses. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Failing to get adequate sleep can have an adverse impact on your career. According to the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School, failure to get enough sleep, even for just one night, can impair a person’s ability to function by affecting his or her ability to focus and access high-level cognitive functions. A panel of experts from sleep, anatomy and physiology, as well as pediatrics, neurology, gerontology and gynecology convened by the National Sleep Foundation in 2015 recommended adults between the ages of 26 and 64 get between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. Make a concerted effort to get more sleep if you’re falling short of those recommended guidelines.

DEBUNKING MYTHS ABOUT IRISH CULTURE The Irish are not enamored with leprechauns. Come St. Patrick’s Day, leprechauns are purported to be mischief makers who can rev-up the fun. But within Ireland, the only places you’re liable to find leprechauns is in tourist gift shops. In fact, while the origins of leprechauns may date back to ancient Ireland, many people now believe the image of the fighting, illtempered leprechaun is offensive to the Irish people.
