Hello, I am . I was born in the wild to a feral mom and was the only surviving kitten. I was 10 weeks old when my mom & dad took me indoors. I'm a busy boy, and like annoying my sister dog. My favorite toys are a foil ball, feathers on a stick, catnip mice and the window blind cords. I'm so fortunate to live in a loving home.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have a leopard gecko named Lenetta, and I wouldn’t trade her for the world. There’s a problem, though. I also have a cat, and that cat always finds a way into the room where Lenetta is kept, and spends his time chasing the crickets through the plastic “kritter keeper.” Sometimes it gets flipped over and the crickets escape. Then I have nothing to feed to Lenetta, and there are loose crickets all over the house. How do I get this cat to stop obeying his instinct to chase these bugs? Help, before any more crickets get loose! -- Josiah from New York DEAR JOSIAH: Ah, that’s the thing: It’s a cat’s instinct to chase small, hopping things. Cats think it’s awesome. Rather than try and teach your cat not to chase crickets -- a tough job that will require long-term commitment, daily training sessions and possibly some genetic manipulation to remove that hunting instinct -make it tougher for the kritter keeper to get turned over. Solution 1: Duct tape. One piece on each side of the lid, being careful not to cover the air vents. If you use a cricket shaker or something similar, take out the shaker tube and secure the lid. Solution 2: Camouflage. Make the cricket cage invisible. Put it on a shelf that the cat can’t reach. Cover it with a thin cloth (that air can get through) or place it behind other objects. Out of sight, out of mind. Solution 3: Keep the door to Lenetta’s room closed. This may be more difficult because your cat clearly has figured out how to get in. Think about other ways to discourage his entry. Good luck!

Bra measurements are hard to come by, no doubt thanks in part to the nature of getting measured in such an intimate area of the body. But considering undergarments set the foundation for all clothing worn on top, this is one of the more important measurements to verify. Enlist the help of a friend or family member to make measurements go more smoothly.

HOMETOWN WAYS TO IM PROVE INDOOR AIR QUALITY ALL YEAR LONG As w inter w ears on, it’s not uncommon for people living in cold w eather climates to experience some cabin fever. W inter w eather confines many people to their homes, making many antsy to get out once the first signs of spring begin to appear. In addition to contributing to cabin fever, w inter w eather can have a negative impact on indoor air quality. W hile air pollution is something most often associated w ith densely populated cities, the air inside homes is not immune to pollution, especially during long w inters w hen w indow s are often closed for months at a time. Though open w indow s in spring and summer can vastly improve indoor air quality, there are w ays to ensure that air stays fresh and healthy regardless of w hich season it happens to be.

Charles H. Sevor Sr. December 25, 2020 Charles H. Sevor Sr peacefully passed on December 25th, 2020 at age 87. Predeceased by his parents, Harvey and Florence Sevor; wife, Marilyn Sevor; brothers, Wayne Sevor, Cecil Sevor; brother-inlaw, Ron Verstaete. Survived by his son, Charles (Christine Yaskulski) Sevor Jr; daughter, Mary Shortbull; grandchildren, Kara (Martin) Close, Chandra Gilman, Michael (Aimee) Sevor, Angela Turner Leonard; great-grandchildren, Emily Sevor, Charlize Sevor; many other grandchildren and great-grandchildren through marriage; brother, Louie (Gail) Sevor; sisters, Wanda (Chuck) Rice, Bernice Verstaete; many nieces, nephews and family friends. The family would like to extend our appreciation to and acknowledge longtime close friends who would sit around the table, “shoot the breeze,” and always help at a drop of a dime. You know who you are. Charles served in the Army in Korea from 1953-1955 in the 10th Infantry division and was honorably discharged in 1956. He was a lifetime member of Albion VFW Post 4635. Charlie also served with the Orleans County Civil Defense Auxiliary Police Department. He worked at the Farm & Feed, Holley Cold Storage, Albion Landfill, and he retired from Kodak. Charlie was one of the founding members of the Clarendon Fire Company. Not only was he present at the first informal gatherings, he was asked to take the minutes at their first meeting and served as the first treasurer in 1956 when they became chartered. More information can be found in “Images of Clarendon Past.” He served many years at the Fire Company. Following Charles’ wishes he chose to make an anatomical gift to the University of Rochester Medical Center, therefore there will not be a service scheduled at this time. A celebration of life will be planned by the family for a later date. In lieu of flowers please send donations to Clarendon Fire Company, 16169 East Lee Road Highway, Clarendon, NY 14429.

Shoveling or removing snow by various methods can be strenuous work, taking even those who feel they are in good shape by surprise. A 2011 study conducted by researchers at the Center for Injury Research and Policy of The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital found that an average of 11,500 snow-shovelingrelated injuries and medical emergencies were treated in U.S. emergency departments each year from 1990 to 2006. Lower back injuries, falls, injuries to the arms and hands and cardiac-related injuries account for many of the incidents sustained while removing snow. There’s also the risk of injury from collisions with pedestrians and snow plows. Plows and bobcattype devices can cause serious injury. Exercise caution when operating such machines.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Accessing Your FREE Credit Report For years we’ve been able to get one free credit report per year from each of the three credit bureaus. Right now, we’re able to get a free one each week until the middle of April. Why? Their generosity is likely due to the astronomical number of scams coming out of the COVID crisis. The number of unemployed crooks has surely gone up, making your good credit too enticing to pass up. Go to www.usa.gov/credit-reports to learn more about credit reports, scores, freezes and errors. If you want to try to get all three reports at once, call 1-877-322-8228 at the Annual Credit Report location. The others are: Equifax: 1-888-548-7878 or 1-800-685-1111; equifax. com. Experian: 1-888-397-3742; experian.com. TransUnion: 1-800-916-8800 or 888-909-8872; transunion.com. Once you get your report, either online or in the mail, study it carefully. Look for accounts that you never opened and the names of people you don’t know. Be sure all the information is correct. If you need to file a complaint, go to ftc.gov/complaint or call 1-877-FTCHELP (1-877-382-4357). (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

TIPS FOR REALIZING GOALS IN THE YEAR AHEAD
HOME FIRE RISKS INCREASE AS WEATHER COOLS
Expect setbacks. If realizing resolutions was easy, the success rate would be greater than 8 percent. Setbacks are inevitable, so don’t allow them to derail your efforts. Even if setbacks occur when you’re well on your way to success, regroup and get back on track without getting down on yourself.
(NAPSI)—The fall and winter seasons bring cooler temperatures, holidays, and images of cozy nights by the fireplace. Yet the change in seasons also comes with the chance of severe weather and an increase in fire risks. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, more home fires occur in winter than in any other season.
DIFFERENT WAYS TO HELP RESOLUTIONS STICK THIS YEAR
MAKE THE YEAR AHEAD CLUTTER-FREE Purchase furniture that doubles as storage. Storage ottomans and benches can help clear common areas and bedrooms of clutter such as blankets and bed linens that can make rooms feel more claustrophobic. Storage furniture might not get excess items out of the house, but such furnishings can create a more comfortable, welcoming environment.
Magic Maze
Practice self-control in all aspects of life. Some researchers believe that the self-control necessary to help people maintain their resolutions is like a muscle that needs to be exercised. When selfcontrol is revved up across many different activities, it’s easy to realize one particular resolution. For example, in an experiment at the University of Albany, researchers asked 122 smokers who were trying to quit to practice extra self-control for two weeks, either by avoiding sweets or by squeezing on a grip strengthener for as long as they could twice a day. Twenty-seven percent of those who were diligent about practicing their self-control exercise successfully kicked their cigarette habit in the following month, compared with just 12 percent of volunteers who didn’t maximize self-control.

“Holiday decorations, space heaters, generators, and fireplaces all present fire hazards if not properly used and maintained,” said Steve Hirsch, chair of the National Volunteer Fire Council. “Residents should be aware of the dangers and take the steps to make sure their families and homes are protected.” Follow these tips to minimize home fire and safety risks: • Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of the home. Test monthly to ensure they work. • Install carbon monoxide alarms and test them at least once a month. • Know where the gas, electric, and water main shut-off controls are and how to use them. • Place fire extinguishers in the kitchen, garage, and living room, and make sure all household members know how to use them. • Develop a home fire escape plan and practice it with the entire family. • Keep portable generators outside and away from the home. • Install a screen in front of each fireplace or wood stove. Store cooled ashes in a metal container outside the home. • Have chimneys professionally inspected and cleaned every year. • Keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from fireplaces, radiators, space heaters, or other heat source. • Never leave lit candles unattended, and keep them out of the reach of children and pets. • If using a live Christmas tree, keep it adequately watered and get rid of it after Christmas or when it gets dry. Residents can also take an active role in protecting their communities from hazards such as fires, medical emergencies, and much more. Fire departments across the country are looking for volunteers to serve as firefighters, EMS providers, and auxiliary members. “The majority of firefighters in the U.S. are volunteers—neighbors helping neighbors in an incredible and rewarding way,” said Hirsch. “We need more people to answer the call to serve.” Training is provided by the department, and volunteers can serve in a variety of roles, from providing life-saving emergency response services to conducting fire prevention programs and disaster preparedness planning. WHAT IS IMMUNOTHERAPY? Immunotherapy is a medical treatment that uses portions of the immune system to fight diseases like cancer. Immune cells and the substances they make travel through the body and protect it from foreign invaders, says the American Cancer Society. Immunotherapy includes a combination of treatments. Some boost the body’s immune system in a very general way. Others help train the immune system to attack cancer cells specifically.

No Cure, Just Treatment for Rare Skin Disorder ---
CHOOSING THE RIGHT CAREGIVER FOR YOUR PARENTS
DEAR DR. ROACH: My girlfriend has necrobiosis lipoidica. She suffers from this on her shins, as did her mother. She is not diabetic. We cannot find good information on how to rid her of this. The information we find is not about cures, but treatments that mask the symptom, such as steroids. We cannot even find a doctor that specifically treats this condition. Can you help? -- M.B. ANSWER: Periodically I get letters referencing a condition like this one that I know absolutely nothing about. Fortunately, I have the time to do a lot of reading, and I talked to several people with the condition. Here is what I found. Necrobiosis lipoidica is a rare skin disorder, usually but not always associated with diabetes. It occurs mostly in young adults (the average is 25 years old when associated with diabetes, 46 years if not), and is more common in women. It may also be associated with thyroid disorders and celiac disease. The cause is unknown. The diagnosis is made by skin biopsy. The appearance is usually of a large, variably colored and elevated patch of skin, most commonly on the shins, as your girlfriend’s is, but it can spread to other parts of the body, especially skin that has been scraped or damaged. Because necrobiosis lipoidica can occasionally transform to skin cancer, it needs careful surveillance. There is no cure for necrobiosis lipoidica. However, there are treatments that can reduce the inflammation. Steroids, either topical or injected, are the usual first choice. Topical steroids are more effective if they are given as ointment and covered with an air- and water-tight dressing. If topical steroids are not as effective, there are many other therapies that have been tried, including: the medication tacrolimus, which decreases the immune response; ultraviolet light A; antimalarial drugs (also used for autoimmune diseases); and others. The disease normally progresses slowly, then stabilizes, but it can spontaneously resolve in some people. Necrobiosis lipoidica may also ulcerate, at which point a wound care specialist may be of tremendous value. It may not be easy to find an expert dermatologist for this condition. I would start with a support group, as you can get expertise from others who have been living with this condition. I found one large group on Facebook. I read some tips on makeup and temporary tattoos for cosmetic improvement. I found two clinical trials recruiting subjects, one in Boston and one in Pennsylvania. You can find clinical trial information at clinicaltrials.gov. More good information is available at https://tinyurl.com/NLskin. ***

(NAPSI)—According to Pew Research, every day, 10,000 Americans turn 65 years old. And that will continue for the next 12 years, reaching 18 percent of the population by 2030. Americans 85 and older will triple in population by 2050. With a rapidly aging population living longer than past generations, caregivers are in high demand. A cost of care study by Genworth forecasts that there will be a shortage of more than 3 million home care aides in the next decade. To meet this demand, over the years there has been an explosion of home care franchises and independent home care agencies across the country. Yet, as many families discover, finding the right caregiver to meet your family’s specific needs can be a challenge. One innovator looking to solve the caregiver gap is a San Francisco− based company focused on modernizing and improving home care for older adults. By professionalizing its caregiver workforce and developing technology to improve efficiencies, it’s able to deliver more consistent and reliable care. Through its Honor Care Network, the company partners with home care agencies in multiple states, making quality care more accessible to more families. Called Honor, the firm suggests five things that families should consider when hiring a caregiver to ensure a safe and optimal care experience for their parents or loved ones: Important Questions to Ask Your Home Care Agency 1. How do you screen your caregivers for safety? A responsible, credible home care agency in California always conducts a thorough screening and background check of its caregivers before sending them into a client’s home. In addition to Home Care Aide (HCA) mandated certification and Department of Justice fingerprinting and background checks, the best home care agencies go further by screening for DMV driving records, drug testing, and abiding by strict minimum-age requirements. 2. How do you train your caregivers and verify their skills? Caregivers should have a solid foundation of training, such as how to use mechanical lifting equipment, basic knowledge of how to support clients living with Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease, and how to assist with daily living activities such as bathing, grooming and hygiene. Ask if the caregivers are tested on scenario-based skills and if any personality tests are conducted to check for temperament under stress or condition-related situations, such as “sundowning.” 3. What is your performance record for on-time arrivals and noshows? How promptly do you communicate schedule changes to your clients? Ask the agency how it manages late arrivals and last-minute cancellations by caregivers. Does it guarantee a replacement? How does it communicate with clients and how often? What is its policy if there’s an ongoing tardiness issue? 4. How do you manage caregiver performance? Ask how the agency motivates caregivers to provide the best care and client experience. Does it value and know its caregivers’ track record and does it continually train caregivers to ensure it has the best talent? Assessing personality and chemistry with clients is also important. 5. How do your caregivers communicate with each other about a client’s condition during shift changes? Your parent will likely have more than one caregiver to staff weekly schedules. Ask the agency how each caregiver is notified of a client’s daily condition, how that information is communicated to other assigned caregivers to ensure seamless care, and how families are notified, how often and when. Finding the right caregiver can be less stressful if you know the right questions to ask. Initiating a conversation at the start about what’s most important to you in finding the right caregiver can make all the difference. Learn More: For further facts and tips, go to www.joinhonor.com.

Saying Goodbye to Pandemic Stress 7 Tips for Better Self-Care in 2021 BY AMANDA DUDEK
It’s
no exaggeration to say that 2020 was a challenging year for many people. In fact, with its isolation, stress and anxiety, it is not a stretch to say it was a traumatic experience. Whether you were on the front lines as an essential worker, struggling with the isolation of extended quarantining, or somewhere in between, many of us have started this new year burdened with incredible emotional and physical fatigue. Now is the perfect time to focus on self-care with its oh-so-necessary renewal and restoration. Give yourself permission to take a break, refocus, and recharge your mind and body. Boost your wellness by incorporating something new (perhaps one of your favorite tips!) into your regular self-care routine.
1. Meditate: Meditation is an excellent means of reducing stress and restoring healthy function in the body. Practiced for thousands of years, studies show that meditation can be associated with the improvement of a variety of issues such as strengthening cognitive function, protecting against heart disease, stimulating the immune system, and reducing blood pressure as well as improving metabolism and breathing. Consider spending at least 15 minutes each day practicing mindful meditation, deep breathing, or yoga to help destress your brain.
2. Take advantage of Telemedicine: Whether you have a case of the winter blues or simply aren’t feeling like yourself, telemedicine can be a great way to see your doctor quickly and safely. The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology says telehealth, which is a broader scope of remote healthcare services than telemedicine, can utilize everything from videoconferencing, the internet, store-and-forward imaging, streaming media, and terrestrial and wireless phone communications. Also, according to the American Medical Association, nearly 75 percent of all doctor, urgent care and emergency room visits can likely be handled safely and effectively over the phone or via video. Those experiencing an emergency, COVID-19 testing and treatment, or other serious symptoms and concerns, are encouraged to seek in-person treatment right away. Want to give it a try? Call your doctor’s office to see if telemedicine is right for you.
3. Journal: Sometimes, committing your experiences and worries to paper can help you to leave them in the past and move forward. Journaling can also slow your racing thoughts, allowing you to identify and better manage concrete issues. Writing can also encourage out-of-the-box thinking and creative problem solving. Ready to write? All you need is a notebook, a pen, and a quiet, private place. Give yourself permission to jot down whatever comes to mind and resist the urge to self-edit.
4. Get up & get moving: Exercise does wonders for not only maintaining a healthy, fit body, but it also can improve mood. While this can mean visiting a gym several times a week, it doesn’t have to. Though walking might not provide the same level of intensity that fitness enthusiasts are accustomed to, the Arthritis Foundation notes the various ways walking benefits the body. Walking protects against heart disease and stroke, strengthening the heart and lowering blood pressure. It can strengthen the bones, improve mood, and in some cases, has been found to lower the risk for cognitive decline and even increase life expectancy. Always consult your

doctor before starting a new exercise routine. Whether it’s a 10-minute stroll outdoors or several weekly workouts, keeping your body moving is a great way to release stress and improve your health.
5. Try something novel: Reading can be very calming, helping to reduce stress. By losing oneself in a book, worries can melt away, says research conducted in 2009 at the University of Sussex. Studies have also shown that reading can develop neural networks in the brain that can help readers understand more complex thought. It can also improve your vocabulary, even as you get older. Consider spending even 5-10 minutes each day reading. Don’t forget, it’s absolutely okay to quit and choose another book. If you are feeling particularly ambitious, start a virtual book club! 6. Don’t “break up” with nature: When many recreational options closed temporarily during the pandemic, people spent much more time outdoors. As indoor recreational facilities reopen, it is important not to leave nature behind. The National Institutes of Health and Harvard Medical School say that, in addition to providing physical benefits, simply spending time in nature in any form can improve mental outlook, boost creativity, elevate mood due to natural light, improve concentration, and reduce stress. It may even help you sleep better. As indoor recreational facilities reopen, consider maintaining favorite outdoor activities, even simply dining outside. 7. Stay Safely Social: While it is important to protect your physical health and continue to follow masking and social distancing guidelines, it is also important to protect your mental health by finding safe ways to maintain social connections. There are many safe options to help keep isolation at bay. Consider scheduling video chats regularly, either once or twice per week. Try arranging for a large group chat on holidays. Maintain a connection with your elderly and other vulnerable loved ones by putting together care packages of supplies and treats. Deliver them in person so you can see the smiles, even if only through a window. Send uplifting messages in personalized cards to loved ones at home and in long-term care facilities. Don’t forget to let potentially isolated friends and family know they are cared for and loved. We also welcome you to drop us a note, whether by mail or email, because we always love to hear from our readers!

* Kitchen tip: You can slice mushrooms in an egg slicer. * If your sneakers are smelly, try this: Stick a sheet of fabric softener in each one. Let them set overnight, and most of them time, the smell will be gone by morning. Of course, you should rotate your tennies to help them “breathe,” since wearing your shoes day after day can foster bacteria growth -- meaning your sneaks will be really stinky. * “To get sheets and towels to dry faster, try adding a tennis ball to the dryer. It bounces around inside while the cycle is going, and breaks up large items that tend to crumple into a ball.” -- C.L. in Illinois

* When you get near the end of a roll of paper towels, save it to put in your car. Pull together a kit to keep in the car with the following items: a small bottle of glass cleaner, a squeeze bottle of water, some wet wipes and the short roll of paper towels. You will always be ready for a quick on-the-road cleanup. * The kitchen and the bathroom are the worst places in the house to store medicines and vitamins. Humidity and heat can damage the properties of the compounds.
