The National Christmas Tree Association (NCTA) reports that millions of U.S. families plan to focus their holiday traditions around a real Christmas tree. That means that a lot of real trees will be sold this year starting in mid-November. NCTA also says that “about 23 percent of the consumers will purchase their trees from a ‘Christmas tree farm’ while about 62 percent will buy trees from a retail lot.” About 300,000 consumers will purchase their real tree over the Internet or by mail order. It is estimated that just as many households plan to use a new or used artificial tree this season. Real trees are in major competition with the plastic and aluminum versions.

COLD W EATHER W ILDLIFE IN HOM ES BOOSTS DISEASE AND PROPERTY DAM AGE RISKS M any people may practice the “ love thy neighbor” creed, but w hen it comes to four-legged w ildlife su ch as raccoons, squirrels, and opossum that often seek refuge in yards and homes w hen outdoor temperatures dip and food sources become scarce, they are best kept at an arm’s length. As community development has thin ned natural habitats and forced these critters into residential areas and lessened their fears of people , the National Pest M anagement Association (NPM A) has found that many areas of the country continue to report incre ased encounters w ith nuisance w ildlife. “ W hile it can be a unique experience to spot w ildlife in neighborhoods, these animals should be disc ouraged from taking up residence,” advises M issy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs for the NPM A. “ Not only can they damage property, many are vectors of disease, most notably rabies.” According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 40,000 people are exposed t o rabies each year, a viral infection passed through the bite and saliva of an infected mammal. Raccoons, fox es, skunks, coyotes and bats are the most commonly reported animals infected w ith rabies. Because of the risks a ssociated w ith these pests, homeow ners should take extra precautions to protect against them. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Lilies The flower most commonly associated with funeral services in the popular mind is the lily. Lilies are often interpreted as a symbol of the innocence that has been restored to the soul of the departed. A white stargazer lily symbolizes sympathy and any type of white lily expresses majesty and purity. Frederick J. NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Inexpensive gift idea: On the front of an empty photo album or scrapbook, print out and arrange color photos of your recipient in a collage. Glue the photos to the front of the album and cover with a decoupage glaze, like Mod Podge. Let dry and glaze again. You’ve just made a one-of-a-kind gift! * If you are a re-gifter, always document from whom and in what year you received a gift. Then re-gift it to someone who will have little to no contact with that person. For example, if Aunt Emily from out of town sends you a lovely soap basket that you would never use, you could re-gift it for your office party. * After-Christmas sales are a great time to buy not only gift wrap (look for solid colors that you can use all year long), holiday cards and decoration, but also next season’s winter wear. Things like scarves and gloves can be great bargains. And even coats can go on sale. Take advantage -- especially if you have kids -- and buy up. * “Recycle in the new year by using wrapping supplies to help store your holiday decorations. The cardboard tube from gift wrap can be cut into smaller pieces, which you can wrap strands of tree or house lights around. Boxes can be put to use to hold ornaments or other decorations, and ribbon and bows that are still in good condition can be tucked away for re-use next year.” -- E.F. in Oregon

Send out a little cheer the year we all can use it most. As 2020 comes to a close, our current climate still keeps us at a distance from one another, leaving a gap FaceTime can’t quite fill. Now, with little other choice, we’ve become reliant on the technology we may have taken for granted or wanted a break from, and perhaps bringing back some nostalgia right in time for the holidays is just what we need.
There’s no better feeling of holiday cheer than opening up a holiday card, and our team at Printing by Penny Lane is here to help! We have an array of cards for the winter months, be it for holidays including Christmas, Hanukkah, or general greetings. Call us at 585.226.8111 for a custom design or order online at www.printingbypennylane.com!

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Here’s How to Reduce Risk of Heart Disease ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 70-year-old female who had a stress test, echocardiogram and carotid study. I passed all tests. My cholesterol is 173, with my HDL 56, LDL 95.6 and triglycerides 108. My blood pressure is 110/64. The cardiologist put me on 5 mg of Crestor. He feels this will help my numbers. He also has me taking CoQ10 and vitamin D3 in case my legs start aching from the Crestor. I’ve been taking everything now for two weeks, and my legs are starting to ache. Is it really necessary to stay on Crestor? -- J.S. ANSWER: I put all your numbers into the standard risk calculator at www.cvriskcalculator.com, and your risk for heart disease or stroke in the next 10 years is 6.8%. That is in a range where medication therapy is not usually recommended. Of course, I can’t tell you to stop taking the medication your doctor has recommended. He may know something about you that I don’t. It’s possible you have a less-common risk factor your cardiologist may not have told you about. Some people with very good cholesterol and blood pressure numbers have high levels of C-reactive protein, for example, which confers an increased risk for heart disease. That’s true even in people with desirable cholesterol levels, and people in that situation would clearly benefit from taking Crestor or a similar medicine. All of these medicines have the risk of muscle aches, although the risk of serious muscle damage is |very small. Nearly everyone can reduce their heart disease risk by having a diet with very little meat but high in vegetables, legumes and nuts, along with whole grains and fruits. Regular moderate exercise is as important as diet. Keeping stress levels low, having good close relationships and sleeping 7-8 hours daily are underappreciated beneficial factors to reduce heart risk as well. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. COVID-19 CAN CAUSE KIDNEY INJURY, YET MOST AMERICANS DON’T KNOW IT (NAPSI)—According to a recent Harris Poll, too many people don’t know all they should about the dangers of coronavirus—particularly how it can affect the kidneys. COVID-19, it seems, attacks more than just the lungs. In the new National Kidney Foundation-Harris Poll Survey on COVID-19 and Kidney Health, the findings show low levels of awareness on both the risk of developing an acute kidney injury as a result of COVID-19 and of the long-term effects of kidney damage. “A significant number of patients going into the hospital to be treated for COVID-19 are coming out as kidney patients,” said Kevin Longino, CEO, National Kidney Foundation and a kidney transplant patient himself. “We believe this may be a looming healthcare crisis that will put a greater strain on hospitals, dialysis clinics and patients, for whom chronic kidney disease will be a lasting remnant of the coronavirus crisis—even after a vaccine is, hopefully, found.” Acute kidney injury Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a sudden episode of kidney failure or kidney damage that happens within a few hours or a few days, and is happening in about 15 percent of all hospitalized coronavirus patients, many of whom now need dialysis. If a patient ends up in the intensive care unit (ICU) their odds worsen; reports indicate that one in five intensive-care patients have lost kidney function. COVID-19 will likely result in a higher number of Americans with chronic kidney disease and/or kidney failure than before the pandemic. Once kidneys fail, dialysis or a transplant is needed to survive. Hospital shortages Hospitals aren’t prepared for the expected increase of kidney patients. In hot spots of the outbreak there are shortages of dialysis equipment, supplies and nurses properly trained to administer dialysis in the ICU. Most Americans, according to the Harris Poll, are concerned and want the federal government to step in. Further, the Harris Poll found that the vast majority of Americans want the federal government to provide more resources toward diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of kidney disease, and significantly increased funding for kidney research because of kidney-related illness from COVID-19. More poll results The poll also found: • Only 17 percent Americans are aware of acute kidney injury as a result of COVID-19; • Only 46 percent of Americans are aware that COVID-19 will likely increase the number of Americans with chronic kidney disease or kidney failure; • 58 percent of Americans are aware that COVID-19 can cause acute respiratory failure; • 54 percent know it can cause pneumonia; • 52 percent of those surveyed know COVID-19 can cause acute respiratory distress syndrome. SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles
Pants on Fire! The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has put out a timely warning about fire safety, especially for seniors. The main statistic is grim: We seniors make up about 16% of the population, but account for a whopping 77% of all clothing fires. Cooking heads the list of dangers, with fires from the stovetop and oven. Closely following are fires from smoking and being outside burning trash and debris. Space heaters are on the list, of course. The advice from the experts: • Don't cook when you're wearing a bathrobe or anything with long, wide sleeves. Any loose clothing can catch fire if you're too close. • If you burn debris and trash outside, stay back from the fire. A better idea, however, is not to do any outdoor burning yourself. • Don't smoke in bed, ever. • Keep an eye on your space heater. It's far too easy to be too close to a space heater and not notice that your pants or robe are about to catch fire. • If the worst happens and your clothes catch fire, don't run! Drop to the floor and roll, and keep rolling until the fire is out. Grab a blanket if it's necessary to put the fire out. Call 911 and put cool water on your burns until help arrives. • Do you have a fire extinguisher? Did you know that the chemicals inside can expire? They will typically last from five to 15 years, so be sure to check yours.

Act of kindness A huge thank you to the kind lady who paid for my order at Dunkin’ Donuts on Saturday the 28th in Batavia. I was having a tough morning, and you made my day. Many blessings to you and your family, and I will definitely pay it forward! Kudos to feeding the birds How petty! I can’t believe someone would be asked to leave a parking lot over feeding birds! I am an animal lover, especially fond of birds, and I applaud the kindness you have shown by caring for the seagulls. Can’t believe that the world has become so cynical and harsh that
someone would be yelled at, or asked to leave, over feeding a bird! Keep up the good work!
getting my hair done, I paid for my appointment and left. To my surprise, when I went to pay after my next visit, they told me that the gentleman on my previous visit had paid for my appointment. Keep up the great work! Thank you, Penny Saver, for What a lovely surprise and how your great magazine! I’ve been very kind of him! Thank you so reading it for almost 30 years. much! Keep up the great work! Now getting my granddaughter to enter contests! Merry Christmas & Happy New Year! Stay safe! Sherri
Loser To the loser who stole the World War II Veteran’s Flag I put on my Dad’s grave at [local cemetery] in [local town]: I can’t even say you should be ashamed of yourself, because losers aren’t. To think a veteran or active military member would risk their life for some sad, pathetic grave robber like you is beyond words. It did not blow away, nor did an animal carry it off, other than the two-legged loser that stole it.
Beauty shop blessing I go to the beauty shop every week. On my last visit, I noticed a gentleman sitting in a chair waiting for his wife. After
SAVE TIME WITH EASY MEAL HACKS Look for recipes with as few ingredients as possible. Dishes that include longer ingredient lists typically require more legwork in the kitchen, which usually involves additional prep steps and sometimes longer cook times. Plus, you’re more likely to already have the necessities on-hand for recipes that call for 5-10 ingredients rather than lengthy lists.

Buy pre-cut vegetables to trim time spent on prep work. One of the processes that can surprisingly consume more time than you realize is cutting, chopping and dicing veggies prior to even really diving into a recipe’s instructions. If you’d still prefer prepping your own fresh produce, try completing your work the night before when it doesn’t interfere with quality time spent with family. Stock your pantry with the basics to make cooking quicker and easier. From condiments and canned goods to seasonings and spices, keeping the essentials on-hand means less time scrambling for a quick run to the store and more moments spent at home. (Family Features)

APPRECIATING FRUITCAKE: A much-maligned holiday staple Certain foods are synonymous with the holiday season. Thanksgiving turkey. Holiday cookies. Fruitcake. While those first two make mouths water. fruitcake rarely inspires stomachs to rumble in anticipation. But fruitcake is more than just something to go ignored on holiday serving tables. Fruitcake can be chewy, crunchy and wholesomely rich, making it something holiday hosts will be proud to serve to their holiday guests, who might just come away with a whole new appreciation for fruitcake.
STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * St. Lucia is the only country in the world named after a woman. Originally called the Island of the Iguanas by early Carib settlers, the name was later changed after French seamen were shipwrecked there on Dec. 13, the feast day of St. Lucy.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Holiday Decorations Can be Dangerous DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My aunt was admiring the wreath I made from natural materials, and during the conversation she mentioned that the berries might be poisonous to my cat, “Darwin.” If this is true, should I remove them from the wreath? -- Katie V., Boise, Idaho DEAR KATIE: Unfortunately, yes. If the wreath is accessible to your pets and an ingredient on it may be toxic, you will need to remove that ingredient and replace it -either with a nontoxic alternative or a silk or plastic equivalent. Dogs and cats alike can be at risk from certain plants, berries and leaves that are common during the holiday season. Holly, mistletoe, lilies and amaryllis all are toxic to pets. Cats are especially known for being attracted to lilies, and they can climb to just about any point in a house, so it’s important to avoid having these around at all. Artificial decorations can also pose a danger. Tinsel is the biggest no-no in a pet household; cats that ingest the sparkly strings can suffer intestinal blockage. Plus, it’s not great for the environment. Breakable ornaments, especially those thin glass bulbs that cats love to bat around, can shatter and cut their paws. And if a cat or dog ingests the broken material ... well, I don’t want to think about that. Candles can singe curious noses and wayward tails; use electric or battery-powered instead. Strings of lights pose a tangling and choking risk; place them up high, in a hard to access spot, and attach them securely using staples so a pet can’t pull them down. Coil extra electrical cord and fasten with a twist tie so pets don’t get tangled. Keep your holidays safe for pets, and they’ll stay merry, just like you. Send your tips, comments and questions to ask@pawscorner. com.

The Little Free Pantry: Neighbors Feeding Neighbors BY AMANDA DUDEK
Y
ou are probably familiar with this old riddle: How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. When Batavia’s Jenn Noon asked herself, How do you feed a city, the answer was clear. One neighborhood at a time. It all started one hot afternoon last August. Two Batavia business owners threw a great afternoon for kids on State Street, complete, with free popsicles, sidewalk chalk and more. Noon, who spends a lot of time volunteering since her decision to go back to college, described the State Street neighborhood as one of Batavia’s more challenging areas. “I wanted to participate, so I set up tables with free snacks for the kids,” she explained. Just like that, The Little Free Pantry was born. “I didn’t have a vehicle or anything like that, so I was walking to and from stores a lot,” Noon recalled. “Marianne Skye, owner of Blue Pearl Yoga, was a lifesaver. She would pick me up, drop things off. She even had a refrigerator donated to us! She has just been amazing.” Skye had gotten involved with the Pantry, which started out as a repurposed entertainment center, quite by accident. “Marianne had overplanted one of their fields,” Noon remembered. “She told me about the farm, and I told her about the Pantry. Then, vegetables started flowing in. I remember they gave us daikon radishes, and you couldn’t even get those in stores!” After the addition of a refrigerator, the question of where it could be successfully hosted naturally arose. “I was turned down by several businesses, but the Dr. Kubiniec and his wife, Sharon, wholeheartedly agreed to host the Pantry right outside their dentist’s office,” said Noon. “They sponsor the electricity every month, as well.” It wasn’t long before the community embraced the idea. Keanon Sean of Batavia, built an enclosure around the refrigerator at its new location, including pantry shelves on the inside. He also installed hooks which Noon has used to offer coats to anyone in need. “Neighbors began talking to neighbors maybe they hadn’t before,” shared Noon, adding the Pantry has been called a blessing. “One gentleman came in on my birthday, and I believe he is a Veteran,” she said. “I had seen him frequently during the summer, and we would greet each other and have short conversations. He came up and handed me some money. I could tell by the look in his
eyes it really meant a lot to hm to give back. He said the Pantry had literally helped him survive, and he didn’t know what he would have done this past summer without it.” As the demand grew, so did Noon’s resources. She soon met with some of the ladies from Schwab Farms at the Genesee Country Farmers Market in Batavia. “They allowed me to come down several days a week to volunteer with them in exchange for produce for the Pantry,” said Noon. “It was amazing the kinds of things we received: apples, pumpkins, whatever the market had all season.” The Little Free Pantry is quickly growing. “The goal is obviously to be there to help those in need, but we also want to fight food waste and food insecurity,” stated Noon. “Almost half of all food in the United States goes to waste, and we would like to connect more area
