Every year since 1947, the people of Oslo, Norway have given a Christmas tree to the city of Westminster, England. The gift is an expression of good will and gratitude for Britain’s help to Norway during World War II.

Shopping local means you get personalized service and products.

Waters Basement Services, Inc. At the holiday season our thoughts turn gratefully to those who have made our progress possible. The friendship of those we serve is the foundation of our success… Thank you for your support! Best wishes for a wonderful holiday and new year filled with happiness and success…

Good customer service can be hard to find at the big chain stores during the holidays due to retail employees often being stretched too thin in their work schedules. Some of the biggest perks of shopping local are the personalized customer service and the unique, hand-crafted items you come across.

Waters Basement Services LAST-MINUTE HOLIDAY SHOPPING TIPS Give something less traditional. Holiday gifts need not come from stores. Rather than spending their time shopping for gifts for loved ones who seemingly have it all, last-minute shoppers can give the gift of a donation in their loved one’s name. Last-minute shoppers who want to give something more tangible can create a homemade gift that’s both unique and heartfelt. If your DIY skills are lacking, give a loved one the gift of a night out on the town at your expense.

Hi! My name is

Gizmo! I’m 10 years old! I love getting lots of treats and attention when my mom’s clients come to get their hair done! Sometimes I sit on their lap to get some extra lovin!

Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

Long nails can be painful for dogs. The experts in holistic care at Dogs Naturally Magazine say that long nails that will come in contact with hard ground can push back up into the nail bed and cause discomfort. Long nails also may cause the toes to twist. Most dogs require their nails be trimmed every two weeks. This time period may be extended if the dog goes for long walks frequently.

Sponsored this week by:

SA V E Bi g O n Tree Servi ce GREAT GIFTS FOR SENIORS: TRAVEL GIFTS Many retirees love to travel, but not every senior has the means to take off for parts unknown. A 2013 survey from the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies® found that 25 percent of retirees admitted they wished they would have saved more for retirement travel. Holiday shoppers can light up seniors’ smiles by gifting travel gifts this holiday season. One idea is to transfer airline miles to an elderly loved one so he or she can get a free or discounted flight. If that’s not a possibility, consider some new luggage.

M any people may practice the “ love thy neighbor” creed, but w hen it comes to four-legged w ildlife su ch as raccoons, squirrels, and opossum that often seek refuge in yards and homes w hen outdoor temperatures dip and food sources become scarce, they are best kept at an arm’s length. As community development has thin ned natural habitats and forced these critters into residential areas and lessened their fears of people , the National Pest M anagement Association (NPM A) has found that many areas of the country continue to report incre ased encounters w ith nuisance w ildlife. “ W hile it can be a unique experience to spot w ildlife in neighborhoods, these animals should be disc ouraged from taking up residence,” advises M issy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs for the NPM A. “ Not only can they damage property, many are vectors of disease, most notably rabies.” According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 40,000 people are exposed t o rabies each year, a viral infection passed through the bite and saliva of an infected mammal. Raccoons, fox es, skunks, coyotes and bats are the most commonly reported animals infected w ith rabies. Because of the risks a ssociated w ith these pests, homeow ners should take extra precautions to protect against them.

Thank you, City Workers! On Dec. 4th, to the city workers of Canandaigua: Thank you for remaking two crosswalks on Main Street at Wood Library and at the Congressional Church. They are beautiful! I would also like to thank them for their conscientiousness as I was in a wheeled vehicle and they had to close off a portion of the sidewalk. I went into the street to carefully go around the trucks, and a worker moved the cones over so I would have more room to safely pass around them. Thank you for your awareness and consideration for my safety. Thank you, Town of Sweden! Thank you to the Town of Sweden for allotting funds to repair the town highway

department parking lot. The highway department workers did a great job! I especially love the new American Flag display. In these difficult times, it is important that we honor our flag in an appropriate way. Thank you again. - A White Road neighbor Juanita of Tops in Hamlin It is always a pleasure to go to your checkout line. Not only are you efficient in your job, but you are personable, which means a lot these days. When I get in your line, it is like having a chat with a friend. We share our laughs, and you also hear my grievances, not skipping a beat, while carrying on and ringing up my groceries. I know you will know who this is, but I

think it is high time that I share my appreciation for your going above and beyond your job description. Thank you for your diligence in doing your job as well as for also making it a pleasant experience when someone needs to check out! Thank you, Laura! Thank you, Laura, for taking the time to deliver the package you found on County Road 37 that should have been delivered to County Road 40. Blessings due your way! Thanks for Breakfast! Many thanks to the person who paid for our breakfast at Brockport’s Golden Eagle on December 11th. The Christmas Spirit still abounds.

Driving Disaster Congratulations to the woman on [local road] the other day. I didn’t see you kill anyone, which is good, but I saw you weaving in and out of your lane. When I passed you, you had your head down looking at your lap. Shame on you! Then when you got up to the cutoff, you aimed for one road while staying in the left-hand lane. Unfortunately, there was a truck in your way. No problem for you. You went to the left of the truck in the grass and tore off a piece of your car in the back from hitting the guard rail. You got off at [local road] and continued straight with your driver’s rear end dragging. I hope I never see you again, and if I do, I’m getting off the highway and walking. It’s safer.

Five Ways To A Better Move (NAPS)—The next time you’re among the estimated 40 million Americans a year who move into a new home, heeding these five hints can help you stress less: 1. Know what’s happening when. Make a list of everything you need to do and when you need to do it. It should include budgeting, decluttering, hiring movers, buying supplies, and updating medical and financial records. 2. Keep all your critical move-related names, phone numbers and addresses in one document. You may want to store them in your smartphone and have a hard copy. Be sure you can easily access your moving contract, real estate and mortgage documents, as well as information you may need about utilities, banks and schools. 3. Have a first-night box. Once you’re in your new home, you don’t want to have to hunt for such things as box cutters, tools, device chargers, bed linens, shower curtains, toiletries—and the coffeepot. 4. Stay connected to what matters most—family, friends, Internet, Wi-Fi and TV. Arrange your services in advance of your move at CableMover.com. 5. Get help. For a one-stop, customizable way to stay organized, there’s the Moving Guide from CableMover, downloadable at www.cablemover.com.

CHRISTMAS TREES BRIGHTEN THE SEASON Decked out in tinsel, lights, ornaments, and garland, Christmas trees are enduring symbols of the holiday season that boast a rich history. Evergreen trees have been used to celebrate winter festivals for thousands of years, and eventually became associated with Christianity. Plants and trees that remained green all year held special meaning to ancient peoples, and were purported to keep away illness and evil spirits. Germans were credited with tying evergreen trees to Christmas celebrations. In the sixteenth century, devout Christians brought decorated trees into their homes. Martin Luther, the Protestant reformer, is believed to have first added lighted candles to these trees after he was inspired by twinkling stars in the night sky. While early Americans found Christmas trees an oddity, the tradition, brought over by German settlers, eventually caught on. Today, between 25 and 30 million natural Christmas trees are sold in the United States each year, states the National Christmas Tree Association. Trees are grown in all 50 states and Canada.

a festive table on a dime

YOU

C AN

DO

IT!

Presentation is king when it comes to setting a memorable holiday table, and it needn’t be daunting or expensive. Here are some essential tips that will garner rave reviews at your next gathering.

Mercury Glass It’s everywhere these days. From trees, to pumpkins, to candlestick holders, it’s timeless and transitions well from season to season.

Mix and Match Don’t be afraid to mix metallics. This gold flatware, purchased second-hand, is a standout.

Add Interest with Height A mix of faux and metallic pine trees give your table the height it needs. Be sure to place them strategically so your guests can easily see one another.

Start by scouring the house to see what you can mix and match to bring your table to life. Don’t be afraid to ask parents or grandparents for family heirlooms that they may be willing to part with. One of the best investments you can make is solid white porcelain dishes. You can get them for a steal at most places and they’ll take you through every season. For a fun twist, layer them with whimsical holiday plates. Solid red napkins add a pop of color, and when placed under the plates, there’s no need for a runner or placemat.

Be Resourceful Think outside the box. These heavy metal pinecones are confiscated from an old cuckoo clock. Add some freshly clipped greens and you’re good to go.

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Wooden reindeer, real pinecones and mixed greenery take the textural feel to the next level. Snips of spruce or boxwood trees from the yard up the texture, and best of all are free. Details make all the difference. Adding personal placecards is a great touch that makes everyone feel special. How about adding a surprise lottery ticket to the bottom of a random plate? Sometimes a winner, and always a hit!

Page 13

Experiment Pinterest is a great place to get ideas. Take a stab at different napkin folding techniques and see what suits your fancy.

Where to splurge This dining room table is a restored farmhouse table. It seats 22 people when all leaves are in. If you’re going to go all out, do it here and know that it will be enjoyed for generations to come.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Prostate-Shrinking Medicines and Cancer ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I’ve had low-grade prostate cancer for several years and am presently on “active surveillance.” My PSAs have been high but steady, running around 7.8 to 9.2. I have a greatly enlarged prostate, which I believe contributes to the high PSA numbers. I would like your opinion regarding finasteride (Proscar), as I am considering taking it. I see one of its side effects is that it increases the risk of developing a very serious form of prostate cancer. Since I already have this cancer, am I at an increased risk of mine growing more aggressive? -- D.N.W. ANSWER: A 2013 study showed that although finasteride reduced the overall risk of prostate cancer from 15% to 10% in men followed up to 18 years on finasteride, there was a small increase in high-grade, aggressive prostate cancer, from 3% to 3.5%. However, there was no increased risk of prostate cancer death among treated men. Several follow-up studies have suggested that the apparent small increase in aggressive prostate cancers reflected an easier ability to find these cancers, since finasteride shrinks prostate tissue, making it easier to both biopsy and read the results. My view is that the apparent increase in aggressive prostate cancer is unlikely to represent a real danger in taking finasteride. There is no evidence to suggest that finasteride would change the behavior of an existing tumor. ***

Colder Weather: How To Manage Your Blood Pressure & Health High blood pressure means that the force of blood pushing through your body is too strong. That pressure puts a strain on your arteries, which carry blood from your heart to the rest of your body. In colder weather, blood vessels constrict more than normal, which raises blood pressure. • Practice healthy habits: Being physically active, eating healthy & limiting alcohol can be critical to managing your high blood pressure year round, especially during fall and winter. Try to get up and move for at least 30 minutes each day. As the weather changes, modify your exercise routine to include raking leaves, shoveling snow or walking indoors at a mall. • Measure and monitor your blood pressure regularly. Blood pressure monitors are inexpensive and can be purchased at pharmacies and other stores. Many supermarkets and pharmacies have machines that take and record your blood pressure. More than one in three Americans have high blood pressure. To measure, monitor and maintain your blood pressure all year round and learn more about this disease, please visit MeasureUpPressureDown.com.

INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY IMPROVES PATIENT EXPERIENCE FOR WOMEN UNDERGOING BREAST CANCER TREATMENT (NAPSI)—A mother, a sister, a friend…many of us know someone who has been touched by breast cancer, the most common cancer among women, affecting an astonishing one in eight women in the United States. Thanks to technological advances in detection and new treatment approaches, women diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer can opt to keep their breast with less invasive surgery and with breastconserving treatments. In fact, the American Cancer Society estimates that 59 percent of women with an early breast cancer diagnosis (Stage 1 or 2) undergo breast-conserving surgery (lumpectomy) versus 36 percent of women who decide to have a total mastectomy. Research has shown that breast-conserving surgery followed by radiation therapy is as effective as a mastectomy in decreasing the risk of local cancer recurrence for most women*. “One way that breast-conserving surgery is now easier is due to a new innovation in breast cancer treatment—SAVI SCOUT® Radar Localization. This resolves one of the most difficult aspects of breast conservation surgery by eliminating the need to place a wire inside of the breast tissue to locate a tumor,” said Dr. Barry Rosen, Chairman of Department of Surgery at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, Chicago; and Assistant Professor, University of Illinois College of Medicine. “Many of my patients who have undergone a procedure with SCOUT® are impressed with the benefits, including shorter procedure times and decreased anxiety.” Prior to 2015, surgeons generally relied on wire localization to locate a tumor during a lumpectomy procedure. With wire localization, a radiologist guides a thin, hooked wire through the skin and into the tumor on the day of surgery. The surgeon then uses the wire to identify the area of tissue targeted for removal. This resulted in long days of surgery for women, with two procedures performed on the same day. With SCOUT, a tiny reflector, the size of a grain of rice, is placed at the tumor site at any time during the patient’s treatment and well in advance of surgery. The SCOUT Wire-Free Radar Breast Localization System uses safe, nonradioactive, radar technology to provide real-time and precise surgical guidance during the surgery. The ability to precisely locate tumors increases the probability of complete cancer removal and reduces the likelihood of needing follow-up surgery, allowing any additional treatments to occur sooner. In addition, the ability to strategically plan the incision may result in better cosmetic outcomes. SCOUT is also used to effectively localize lymph nodes and tumors prior to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (chemotherapy administered prior to surgery) and can be used with any type of imaging over the course of a patient’s care. More than 350 hospitals have implemented the SCOUT System, and to date, over 45,000 women have had a wire-free localization experience. SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Getting Through Winter Cold weather is here ... joining the coronavirus and the flu. Such a wonderful trio of events all at the same time. The Old Farmer’s Almanac says that temperatures this winter will be a bit warmer for much of the country, at least for the eastern portion. The other Farmer’s Almanac divides the country in a different way, with the north half of the country seeing the cold. We didn’t want to go outside anyway, did we? This winter especially we need to do all we can to stay healthy. If you live in an especially cold area that’s likely to get a lot of snow and ice, find someone to take care of it and be sure you’re on their storm list. Arrange for prescriptions to be sent by mail from the pharmacy. Stock up on batteries for flashlights. Remember to keep your cellphone charged at all times. Try to stock up on heavy or large items from the grocery store, ideally from curbside pickup. A box of canned goods and extra toilet paper will keep you from having to scramble at the last minute. Don’t try to save money by keeping the temperatures in your house too low. Seniors especially can get into trouble with hypothermia before we even know it. Aim for indoor temperatures of 68 F to 70 F, and put on a sweater! One of the biggest things you can do to stay safe this winter is sign up with the seniors daily check-in, a phone call you’ll receive either from the town or senior center to make sure you’re OK. Or create your own phone tree with friends to check in every day.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

You’re a Mean One, 2020!

Bring Back These 5 Victorian Traditions & Keep your Inner Grinch at Bay By Amanda K. Dudek “2020 Stink Stank Stunk” one ornament read, with the Grinch’s hand holding a bauble for effect. While blessed to have suffered only minor inconveniences from the pandemic, I understand this sentiment. It is nearly New Year’s Day, and many of us are looking forward to closing this chapter and moving on to the next. Nevertheless, the holidays await. How can we find our Christmas spirit at the end of a year which, for the most part, has been anything but holly or jolly? Approximately 90% of Americans celebrate Christmas, many of them as a secular holiday. In fact, much of what we associate with the holiday today came from the Victorian Christmas traditions introduced in the 18th and 19th centuries. After a year that would make Ebenezer Scrooge look like Santa Claus, perhaps trying one or more of these classic holiday practices will revive your Christmas spirit and boost your holiday cheer! When selecting gifts, go small: Resist the draw of the largest items during your holiday shopping. The first Nativity centers around the giving of the most meaningful of gifts. Our present day Christmas tradition of gift giving has been tied to this small but powerful gift as well as to the three gifts of the Magi for centuries. During the Victorian Era, gifts evolved from fruit, nuts, candies, small handmade items and trinkets to larger, more expensive, store-bought luxuries. While the former had typically been hung from Christmas trees, the latter had to be placed on the floor, thus giving rise to the tradition of placing presents beneath the tree. Mak I Moder: Consider browsing your local shops and boutiques for unique luxuries which are both attractive and small enough to decorate your tree. You’ll be supporting community businesses and beautifying your home at the same time! Send holiday cards by mail instead: Social distancing is still a factor, and many of us are experiencing digital fatigue. Give yourself a much-needed break. Unplug, skip the email and social media posts, and mail your loved ones real cards they can hold in their hands. Christmas cards’ existence and quick rise to popularity in the mid-to late-1800’s was likely a combination of social-economic factors and the ingenuity of Sir Henry Cole, often credited with commissioning the Christmas card. Sir Cole, an Englishman, did so in an atmosphere of much wider acceptance of Christmas celebrations in England. This is thought to be largely due to the marriage of England’s Queen Victoria to German-born Prince Albert. Germany had embraced Christmas celebrations centuries earlier. Less expensive color printing methods and dropping postage rates shortly followed. Mak I Moder: Henry Cole’s original Christmas card depicted three generations of the Cole family. Echo it by using family photos in your Christmas cards to make them truly, uniquely your own!

Make sweets & treats more fun with Christmas Crackers: It seems this Victorian tradition is alive and well in Great Britain, and it just might be one worth importing! Invented in the 1850’s by London confectioner Tom Smith, Christmas Crackers are made up of cardboard tubes wrapped in brightly-colored, festive paper twisted at both ends, resembling the bonbons with which they were once filled. Traditional Christmas Crackers contain a paper crown, intentionally corny jokes, and small gifts, candies, and other treats. These little bundles are called Christmas Crackers because they open with a bang when pulled at both ends. Traditionally, guests around the Christmas table are meant to hold one end of their own Christmas Cracker in their right hand while the person to their left grabs the other end. At the same time each guest must cross their left hand over their right to grab the other end of the cracker belonging to the neighbor on their right. This creates a sort of crisscrossed arms “chain” around the table. Then, family and friends all pull the Christmas Crackers at once, creating a chorus of pops and flurry of gifts. Mak I Moder: Choose from a surprising variety of Christmas Crackers, ranging greatly in content and expense. It is worth noting that some are designed for children while others are geared for adults. Make Yourself a Bowl of Wassail: First, it’s simply fun to say! Wassail, pronounced wah-sul, was a hot, spiced or mulled beverage - typically hard cider, ale, or wine - served to guests, especially after caroling, to warm them from the winter chill. It was not uncommon to flavor the wassail with spices such as nutmeg, ginger, and cinnamon sticks while sweetening it with brown sugar and whole baked apples. Mak I Moder: When preparing wassail for your next holiday get together, be sure it is both warm and spiced when selecting a recipe. For a tropical twist, combine cider, dark rum, and baked pineapple chunks, and for a family-friendly wassail, skip the spirits and use only regular apple cider instead. Do a little Christmas jig: Believe it or not, dancing has a long association with Christmas celebrations. Families, friends, neighbors, and even businesses would throw holiday parties which commonly included food, drink, music and dancing. Guests might dance the waltz, the Polka, a country-dance or any number of other popular options. Mak I Moder: We certainly will not be throwing any holiday dances or get togethers this year. However, with many families staying home on Christmas, this is the perfect opportunity to crank up the holiday tunes and join in with your kids in some sweet dance moves for a family rock around the Christmas tree. After all, it’s a Christmas tradition! ° µ ¾ À É ° ° É Ì Ñ Ò Ñ Ò Ó °

Puzzle Answers This Week

By JoAnn Derson * B.B. in Massachusetts writes: “I have a rubber disc (used for taking covers off jars) that I keep in my shower. When showering, I put the disc over the drain so the water can accumulate, then I soak my feet at the same time.” * To save yourself some time and aggravation, make a safety set of keys that match your current set exactly. You will never have to go looking for your keys when you are in a hurry, and you won’t have to determine if the key you need is on the ring. It is! * “Re: your recent tip about storing heirloom quilts in a cedar chest: No, no, a thousand times no! Nothing is worse for quilts -- heirloom or otherwise -- than storing them in cedar chests. Acids will not only stain them but break down the fabric over time.” -- B.R. in Washington. Thanks B.R. Although my grandmother did store quilts and other fabric items in her cedar chest, according to sources at the National Quilters Circle, the best place for an heirloom quilt may be on a bed. You can stack them, but rotate so that no quilt gets too much sun. -- JoAnn * “For squeaky door hinges, forget about graphite, WD-40 or any of those other messy lubricants that may last for only a few months. Pull the hinge pins, wipe them clean with a dry rag, and then apply a thin coating of Vaseline with your finger. Properly done, your hinges should remain free of squeaks for at least a year.” -- F.B. in Colorado

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: This year, we are only going to have a few family members over on Christmas Day. In past years, I’ve put our dog, cat and rabbit in the back of the house with plenty of water and beds to sleep in, so the noise and lights and strange people don’t stress them out. I feel like we can safely keep the pets in their usual spots this year because there will only be eight people here for dinner and presents. What do you think? Cheryl in Lake City, Florida DEAR CHERYL: That’s your call. You know your pets. In addition to the size of the gathering, you should consider the personalities of your guests: Are any of them timid or afraid around pets, and would anyone be upset if your dog starts barking? The big question here is how many strangers each of your pets can handle. Rabbits, for example, are very susceptible to stress and should be kept in a quiet spot and not handled too much by visitors. A calm, well-socialized dog may be able to handle the influx of people. Same with your cat, who will simply disappear to a hiding spot if things get a little overwhelming. Even though it’s a smaller crowd this year, make a plan and share it. How much time should the pets spend with visitors around? When should they be placed in a separate area? (During dinner or when presents are opened, for example.) If a pet shows signs of stress, such as barking, yelping, meowing, hissing or growling, who will grab them and take them to the quiet spot to calm down? When everyone knows the strategy, they can act quickly to keep the party calm and pets healthy and safe. Send your tips, comments and questions to ask@pawscorner. com. BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Eat a productivity-friendly lunch. If afternoons are when your productivity really starts to drop off, it might be time to reconsider what you eat for lunch. The body, which converts the foods we eat into glucose that energizes our brains and promotes alertness, processes different types of foods differently. So the food you eat for lunch may affect your energy levels for the rest of the day. For example, eating pasta provides a quick burst of energy because pasta releases glucose quickly. But that burst is often followed by a noticeable downturn in energy levels sparked by fading glucose levels that make it difficult for the brain to focus. In contrast, fruits and vegetables aid in the production of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that helps the brain stay motivated and engaged. Including some fruits and vegetables in your lunch or snacks may just lead to a more productive workday. Page 24

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Cellophane, invented in 1908, was originally intended to protect tablecloths from wine spills. DID YOU KNOW? While it might be synonymous with Santa Claus and cold weather, the North Pole is actually much warmer than the South Pole. That’s because the North Pole sits at a lower elevation than the South Pole, and it is located in the middle of an ocean. The South Pole, on the other hand, is located on the continent of Antarctica, which is covered in ice. But Santa fans mulling a trip to the North Pole to visit jolly old St. Nick might want to think otherwise, as temperatures at the North Pole are less than welcoming. Summertime temperatures at the North Pole, for example, hover right at the freezing point. In addition, because of the way Earth rotates, the North Pole experiences just one sunrise and one sunset each year. However, because the sun is always above the horizon in the summer and below the horizon in the winter, the North Pole actually experiences 24 hours of sunlight in summer and zero hours of sunlight in the winter. While children in North America know the North Pole as home to Santa Claus, that’s a relatively recent addition to the legend of Santa Claus, a story that some historians suggest traces its origins all the way back to the third century. Historians credit famed 19th century caricaturist and editorial cartoonist Thomas Nast with being the first to link Santa Claus and his workshop to the North Pole. However, many Nordic countries continue to say Santa Claus lives in their territories.
