What a wild winter sound,— wild and weird, up among the ghostly hills.... I get up in the middle of the night to hear it. It is refreshing to the ear, and one delights to know that such wild creatures are among us. At this season Nature makes the most of every throb of life that can withstand her severity. ~ John Burroughs, “The Snow-Walkers,” 1866

HOME IMPROVEMENT

REMODELING MILLWORK CAN ADD APPEAL & A CLASSIC FEEL Between the 15th and 18th centuries, ornate millwork was largely reserved for royalty or the very wealthy. Skilled carpenters would hand carve each piece, taking weeks to finish most projects. Eventually, millwork became more commonplace. Distinguishing one property from another today could mean turning back to the more distinctive designs of the past.

BEAT CABIN FEVER WITH WINTER RENOVATIONS When the weather outside is frightful, homeowners and renters can turn their interior spaces into something delightful. Residents can banish feelings of cabin fever by using time spent inside to make subtle or even substantial improvements to their living areas. Individuals may find that winter is a great time to tackle delayed or unfinished projects or to put plans for major renovations in motion. Homeowners may find that they have some extra time on their hands when weather and early evening darkness reduces how much time they can spend outdoors. One of the easiest ways to transform the look of a room is with a fresh coat of paint. Painting a room or rooms is an inexpensive project that can be completed over the course of a single weekend. Painting in lighter colors can help illuminate dark spaces and make a home feel more vivid and inviting, especially during the winter. And painting need not be reserved for walls only. Homeowners may want to sand and paint furniture to give items a trendy arts-and-crafts feel. Address drafts and other inefficiencies. Colder temperatures alert homeowners to drafts, leaks and even insect or rodent infiltration. Homeowners can scout out rooms and remedy situations. Organize the home. Rainy or snowy days are great moments to address organizational issues, such as messy mudrooms or cluttered kitchens. Get a jump-start on spring cleaning before the warm weather arrives. Page 5

Congratulations to our

Winner, Joanne Mistler The year is new, the Past is gone, the best is yet to come. Out with the old, out with the bad now a lesson to learn from... You can't change the past, you can't stop the rain, you can't bring back the words... So let us all learn from the makings of God... the flowers, the creeks and the birds.... When the sun shines above, the flowers will grow, and the birds will all sing, and the creeks will all flow... So my dear friends, let us all learn from this... enjoy all the things with such wonderful bliss.... Tomorrow's not given, Today is part gone, The darkness will follow.... But so will the dawn.....

Thank you to every one that submitted an entry! Over 100 entries were received!

s e v Ra Thank you for your kindness! Thank you to the man who paid for our order after we let him in line in front of us. This was in the drive thru at the Dunkin Doughnuts in Batavia. Because we were in the drive thru, we never got the chance to thank him. This man did this even though he knew he wouldn’t

Sad & Mad To the people that leave their dog out in the freezing cold. At least you could put the small doghouse closer to your house for added protection. Doesn’t seem that you ever let the dog inside. Why do you even bother having a pet? All the extra straw/hay doesn’t really help. This has been going on for years. You should be ashamed. Nursing Home Terror I would like to know why a local college president hasn’t commented on condemning what the New York State Governor has done to our nursing home residents across

until we’d gone to a couple of other stores and got all the way home in another town, an hour later. She was frantic and couldn’t remember where she left it. Thankfully, the gentleman at Dogwood Trading Company not only kept it safe for her, but he had gone down the street to try to find us, also. When he couldn’t, he’d left a note on the door to let us know he had it in case we came back after store after hours. When I called, he said he’d even meet us to return it if

we couldn’t get back before the store closed. We were so thankful for his kindness and helpfulness. This type of thing wouldn’t happen in a big box store.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Another COVID Scam You know it’s getting bad when local police chiefs go on the nightly news to warn against scams. That’s what is happening in my area, and possibly in yours. Scammers are going all out to steal your information, money and identity, and they’re using the COVID vaccine as their tool. A few weeks ago, the scammers’ tactic was to claim we were eligible for a special COVID Medicare card. The card doesn’t exist. So many of us might have said that in response to the frequent phone calls that the scammers changed tactics. Now they claim to have an appointment for you to get the COVID vaccine. Here’s how it works: A scammer will claim to be calling from your doctor’s office, without actually naming the doctor. All they need from you, they say, is your Medicare card number and possibly your bank account or Social Security number “for identification.” Your best bet is to just hang up. But if you ask for the name of the doctor, they won’t know it. It’s the same with hospitals and clinics. If you’re not sure whether the call is fake, hang up and call your doctor, the hospital or clinic, and ask if they’ve tried to contact you. Scammers also are using different tactics: telling you they can fit you into a quick appointment, saying they’re from Medicare or your insurance provider, sending you an email that indicates you can get a fast appointment reservation by calling their special phone number, or offering you the vaccine at a “reduced cost” (the vaccines are free). Some of them actually offer to mail the vaccine to you. Don’t fall for any of these scams. If you need help signing up online for an appointment, call your doctor’s office or the senior center. Don’t give scammers any information, not even your name. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

HEALTHY COOKING TECHNIQUES Trim excess fats. Prepare meats and poultry well by trimming the fat and skin to make the final product even healthier.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Childhood Vaccinations Still Mostly Effective --DEAR DR. ROACH: I am in my mid-50s and in good health (I don’t take any medications). I rarely get sick with colds or flu. I have been vaccinated with all the common vaccinations for our childhood. With all the immigrants coming into our country, I am wondering if any have been given childhood vaccinations in their countries. I fear that chickenpox, measles, etc., could re-enter this country. If so, do our childhood vaccinations still protect us from these diseases? Should seniors be re-vaccinated or is that harmful at our age? -- C.S. ANSWER: Legal immigrants into the U.S. are required to have all vaccinations as recommended by the Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices. Undocumented immigrants are more difficult to study, but what data there is suggests that vaccination rates are roughly the same in the countries of origin of many undocumented immigrants as in the United States. In fact, several Central American countries have higher vaccination rates than the U.S. currently. Analysis of outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases have suggested that most of these outbreaks have come from visitors (Americans or foreign visitors) from countries with high levels of ongoing transmission who spread the disease to others during their infectious period. Because there are some communities where there are enough unvaccinated people due to medical reasons, personal choice or ineffective vaccination to allow spread of the disease, there continues to be ongoing infection in the U.S. This is especially true of measles. People born before 1957 are generally considered to be immune to measles, and the vast majority have had chickenpox. People born between 1963 and 1967 (that might be you) are at risk for having had ineffective measles vaccination, and those at risk should check their immunization status and may need revaccination, especially those in an area near an outbreak. ***

ADVICE FOR BLOOD DONORS Unlike other marvels of modern medicine, quality blood is an important health component that cannot be created synthetically. Blood shortages continue to plague medical establishments across the globe. For those who require transfusions, blood from volunteer donors can be the difference between life and death. However, many people are apprehensive about donating blood because of their own unique fears of the unknown or from past poor experiences with the process. With a little knowledge and some preparation, donating blood can be made much easier. Confirming donors’ health: One of the first steps to donating blood is to determine donors’ eligibility. Potential donors undergo a short health screening and are asked various questions to determine their eligibility. The presence of certain illnesses or other disqualifications helps ensure that the blood will be healthy and that the blood drawn will not have a negative effect on the donor. The American Red Cross states that potential donors will undergo a pin prick on the finger to test for iron levels in their blood. This is to ensure that donors will not be made anemic from giving blood. Frequency of donation, weight and age also will be considered before prospective donors are allowed to donate blood. Many organizations urge prospective donors to avoid giving blood if they have had simple dental work done within 24 hours or major dental work in the past month. Dental work in general can dislodge bacteria, which can get into the blood stream and cause systemic infection. Preparing to donate: Potential donors are urged to eat a healthy diet full of iron-rich foods. It is adviseable to drink an extra 16 ounces of water or a nonalcoholic fluid prior to donating. A healthy, low-fat meal prior to donating also is recommended, as the Red Cross says fatty foods can adversely affect blood tests that check for infectious diseases, and the blood may not be used as a result. Needles are no big deal: According to Justin Kreuter, MD, medical director of the Mayo Clinic Blood Donor Center in Rochester, Minnesota, while the needles used to collect blood are slightly larger than those used for immunizations at the doctor’s office, the needles have silicone on them to make the process of donating more comfortable for donors. Donation duration: Donating blood does not take a long time. It may take between 15 and 20 minutes for donation center workers to extract blood. Donating plasma or platelets may require more time. Allocate at least an hour to undergo the medical exam and to rest after the donation. Post-donation: Donors are urged to rest for a few minutes after the donating and to enjoy the snacks and beverages being offered. The Red Cross says people should avoid performing any heavy lifting or vigorous exercise for the rest of the day after donating. It’s also adviseable to drink an extra four glasses of liquids and avoid alcohol during the day following a donation. Donating blood can save lives and reassure donors that they’re doing their part to help others.

High Schools Sports Resume; Children to Benefit BY SCOTT WURTZEL

L

ocal high school sports are resuming; what do they need to do to stay open? Dr. Steven Schulz, a pediatric medical director for Rochester Regional Health, discussed the benefits of resuming these sports, and how to stay safe moving forward. February 1st was the first day local, high risk, high school sports being allowed to compete. During that day, Dr. Schulz answered multiple questions that pertained to the risks and benefits of student athletes being able to compete again. What are risks that come with lack of socialization? “We do know we are social beings, and socialization does benefit children,” Dr. Schulz stated. “Obviously, we have had our limitations with that because of Covid but there are smart and safe ways to allow that to resume, and we are definitely seeing concerns with mental health from kids who have been struggling, but these guidelines and updated recommendations reflect our improving rates of Covid in the region and the state.” What are mental and emotional benefits of resuming these sports? “Besides just the socialization and the positive self-esteem comes from doing well with sports, we all know with exercise we release endorphins that help our well-being,” says Dr. Schulz. “Hopefully kids will be sleeping better with some of those activities as well. We know from the physical side of things inactivity leads mostly to problems with obesity and bone density and all those sorts of things. We’ve seen weight increase throughout the pandemic, as folks have not been as active. Again, as this is all done safely, increasing physical activity and allow sports to resume can have a beneficial impact.” Dr. Schulz also explained that these benefits are possible because of how schools are handling safety. “We know the schools have been doing that safely: because they are using the screening protocols, because kids are staying home when they are sick, because kids are being identified quickly if they are not, because everyone is wearing masks, and following proper social distancing, making adjustments to classroom sizes and lunchroom sizes, and those kinds of things.”

“All sports are not the same in terms of risk, so that’s something else we definitely need to keep in mind,” Dr. Schulz pointed out. “The closer the contact, the more concern there is for potential spread of Covid. Indoors are of higher concern than outdoor activities. The more spectators, teammates, and people involved, the higher risk as well because the higher the chance any one person might be infected with Covid. There is definitely still risk there. There are new variants of the Covid virus out there in the community.”

Dr. Steven Schulz

Dr. Schulz followed it by saying, “With the precautions, the American Academy of Pediatrics has recently come out with updated guidelines on youth sports and the CDC has as well. One of the biggest things is that we are now recommending that all student athletes—with the exception of certain sports—wear a mask during competition.” Dr. Schulz went into further detail about minimizing risks. “During these competitions and during these practices, it’s really important that we limit who is there only to those who really need to be there, and that any kind of training that can be done without physical contact is ideal, and socially distanced as appropriate.” Spectators at these events also have rules to minimize risk. “There are regulations around spectators as well, limited to only two per athlete. The spectators should be masked, socially distanced, and staying home if they are not feeling well.”

We know that we can do this safely!

As for whether he has any advice for student athletes - Dr. Steven Schulz resuming sports, Dr. Schulz replied, “Some student athletes have been out of condition for a while. We can’t just jump in and expect you to do what you did a year or two ago, when you were training regularly.” He also mentioned, “There is going to be some buildup and it’s important to continue with stretching and following with coaches and trainers that are available to make sure you are doing everything in a safe way. Start small and build your stamina and endurance and your strength over time to prevent muscle injuries.”

With the effort the schools and students are putting in, there is data that reflects the reduced rates of COVID-19 in the area. “Schools have been successful in keeping Covid rates low,” Dr. Schulz says. “We recently just looked at the period from January 6th through the 22nd with the return of school, and the rate with orange zone testing in Monroe county schools was only 0.72%, compared to that of the population at 7.3%. We know that we can do this safely, and the hope now is that we can extend that to sports in addition to what the schools have been doing safely thus far.” What are risks that people should be aware of and how do they minimize those risks? As long as COVID-19 is still a factor, there are still risks to be on the lookout for when it comes to these high school sports.

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

In regard to student athletes who have gotten Covid after Dec 4th, Dr. Schulz explained they “should have an evaluation with their pediatrician or primary care physician to ensure that there are not any potential cardiac issues that would preclude them from returning to sports and that would prompt a more additional work up.” Dr. Schulz concluded, “It’s up to each person involved to do their part to maintain safety for everyone.”

February’s birthstone is the amethyst, which symbolizes piety, sincerity and spiritual wisdom.

Snow forms when water vapor in the atmosphere freezes into ice crystals. Snow falls as snowflakes, which come in a variety of shapes. However, according to Mental Floss, snow also can precipitate as graupel or sleet. Graupel are pellets of opaque ice particles that fall through freezing cloud droplets. They are not the same as sleet, which are drops of rain that freeze into small, translucent balls of ice. Snowflakes are generally small and accumulate to form visible snow coverings. However, snowflakes can be large. The largest snowflake on record was reported to be 15 inches across and eight inches thick. According to “The Guinness Book of World Records,” this giant snowflake was discovered at Fort Keogh, Montana, on January 28, 1887.

INFLUENTIAL JAZZ MUSICIANS Bessie Smith (1894-1937): While there are female instrumentalists in the genre of jazz, in the early days many, such as Bessie Smith, were vocalists. Born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Smith would come to be known as “Empress of the Blues” thanks to her powerful voice. By the 1920s, Smith was among the highest paid black performers. Tragically, Smith’s life was cut short when she died from injuries sustained in a car crash on her way to a show in Memphis in 1937.

Although it appears white, snow is actually clear and colorless. The National Snow and Ice Data Center says the complex structure and many facets of snow crystals results in visible light being reflected. Light is absorbed uniformly over the wavelengths of visible light, which gives snow its white appearance. Even though snow is more common in northern elevations and cold regions, snowfall is not exclusive to frigid climates. In the United States, snow has fallen in cities most often associated with sun and warmth, such as San Diego, Miami and Hawaii. The southern Italy town of Capracotta received 100 inches of snow in 18 hours on March 5, 2015. In spite of its location, Capracotta has been known to receive enormous one-day snowfalls. While snow can fall even in warm climates, the world record holder for the most snow belongs to a northern area. Mt. Baker ski resort in Washington state experienced 1,140 inches in the 1998/1999 winter season. Snow can fall at temperatures well above freezing. According to ScienceBits.com, snow can still fall at temperatures as warm as 46 F. For snow to fall when temperatures are warm, humidity has to be very low. Even though there’s a common perception that no two snowflakes are alike, this isn’t completely accurate. A scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research found two identical snow crystals in 1988. Also, similar results have been produced in laboratories. Snow is an interesting form of precipitation. It can be scarce or plentiful, and may feature tiny snowflakes or extremely large ones. Snow also may take on the color of its surrounding environment.

STATISTICS SHOW JUST HOW BIG SMALL BUSINESS IS Small businesses have such a big impact on their communities, and the world at large, that it might be time to reconsider refering to them as “small.” According to the World Bank, small businesses have a major impact on the world economy, especially in emerging countries. In such nations, small and medium enterprises contribute up to 60 percent of total employment and up to 40 percent of national income. Small businesses figure to frame their economies in emerging countries in the coming decades, and they’re already doing so in developed nations, such as the United States and Canada.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Neighbor’s Dog Is Giving Him the Eye DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My neighbor’s dog, every day since I moved into this house in rural New York, has a habit of coming up to the property line when I go out to check on my garden. She will stand right at the edge, lift a paw, bark at me, then turn around and leave. What’s up with that behavior? -- Jim G., via email DEAR JIM: That sounds like a well-behaved, well-trained dog. Or, your next-door neighbor has, or had, a low-power wire along the property edge that delivers a shock to a dog when it crosses the line. Whatever it is, she was trained not to cross into the neighbor’s yard. I like that you noted her body mannerisms. Raising a paw is a signal that she is alerted and checking you out. A nonaggressive bark is an attention signal. It’s something like, “I see you, and I want you to know that I’ve got my eye on you.” And her turning back after that bark is a good sign. She doesn’t see you as a threat. She’s said her piece, and now she’s off on her way. Being aware of a dog’s body language and barking is important even if you don’t own a dog. A bark followed by a growl (or vice versa) is a warning signal meaning “back off.” A raised paw and an intent stare at a specific object is typical of an alert and energetic but calm dog. A dog that charges and stops is being aggressive and there’s a good chance that behavior can escalate into an attack. If you get the opportunity to meet your neighbors, compliment them on their dog’s good behavior. Send your questions, comments or tips to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

* Empty tissue boxes have so many uses. Try lining one with a plastic grocery bag and keeping it in your car for stray trash. Or you can use it to corral all of those plastic grocery bags until you need them -- just stuff them in one at a time. Lastly, and probably my favorite: Cut out doors and windows to use as houses for kids’ toys. Imagination makes the possibilities endless. -- JoAnn * “Jazz up your pancakes by adding pureed frozen blueberries or strawberries. It turns the mix either blue or red, and it’s fun for the kiddos.” -- V.R. in Florida * “We are always prompted to choose strong passwords, but a random collection of letters, numbers and special symbols can be hard to remember. I make a strong password by using a coded phrase, like “My three boys are No. 1,” which might be “MY3boysR#1.” Just thought I’d share my trick, but not my password!” -- R.W. in Iowa * Keep a bottle of club soda handy for spot stains on carpets or upholstery. It’s good for more than just drinks.
