IT PAYS TO USE CRATES WHEN TRAINING PUPPIES Many dog owners, particularly those who have never before had a dog, may hesitate to employ crates to train their puppies. That’s understandable, as on the surface it can seem cruel or inhumane to confine a living animal to a cage. However, the AKC notes that dogs are den animals that naturally seek out canine caves for security. That’s true whether dog owners provide crates for their puppies or not. So while humans may see crates as cruel, dogs very likely view their crates as secure places where they can go if they get scared or feel skittish. In fact, according to the AKC, dogs’ perception of crates is one reason why dog owners typically find it relatively easy to get their dogs to adjust to crates and ultimately enjoy them. ●

Invading Spiders Endanger Cat DEAR PAW’S CORNER: For some reason this winter, my new house has been invaded by spiders. They are building webs in every corner of the house and basement, and every day I’m knocking down another web with my broom. I’m worried about my cat, “Jameson,” being bitten by a spider. What do I do if this happens? Janine S., via email DEAR JANIE: I’m a huge fan of spiders, because they are one of nature’s best pest control services, trapping and disposing of many other tiny critters. They probably have much more to fear from Jameson than the other way around, because housecats see spiders as interesting prey. Still, a spider invasion is not much fun to deal with. Look for something that is attracting spiders to your home. Do you have wood or leaves piled up against the foundation? Are there cracks in the foundation? Is your basement or attic damp? How clean are your HVAC vents and ductwork? Addressing the source of the problem can cut down quite a bit on the number of spiders invading your house. As for Jameson being bitten by a spider -- if you are concerned, do the same thing you would do when checking for evidence of fleas or ticks. Every evening put Jameson on your lap and run your hand over his coat, backwards. This lifts the hair away so you can see his skin. A spider bite on a cat will look similar to a spider bite on a human. If you do see a spider bite on Jameson, the best thing to do is observe. If he is behaving normally, not distressed or pawing/licking the bite, he’s probably fine. If you have any concerns, contact his veterinarian. Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Rochester Artist Shawn Dunwoody Discusses the (Super) Power of Art with Byron-Bergen Students During Black History Day of Learning BY GRETCHEN SPITTLER

Shawn Dunwoody creates a collaborative mural design with Byron-Bergen students - Gretchen Spittler

Byron-Bergen students with inspiring original mural designs

A

s part of their Black History Month studies, ByronBergen fourth- and fifth-grade students created art projects with, and inspired by, acclaimed Rochester public artist Shawn Dunwoody. While Dunwoody has visited the school in past years, this year his presentation took place on an online meeting platform to maintain health and safety guidelines.

In his presentation to the fourth-grade classes, Dunwoody discussed murals and public art. In his own work, he has used murals to inspire in a variety of community spaces, from donut shops to waterfall viewing platforms. “The murals I’ve done in communities, I’ve wanted to get people excited about their community,” said Dunwoody. “I want “Shawn uses art to make people feel good to uplift urban about themselves and the communities and environment they are in.”

discuss social justice!”

Dunwoody then created a collaborative mural design with the students, discussing - Alyson Tardy, the artistic process as 4th Grade Teacher well as font design and placement. The completed design featured the words “U R Wonderful” in bright colors. Students then designed their own murals, using Dunwoody’s work as inspiration. Their finished projects included messages of support for environmental and social causes, as well as simple words of kindness such as “You got this,” “Love yourself,” and “You are awesome.” In a similar presentation to fifth-grade students, Dunwoody discussed his original comic characters, the Legion of Legends, which includes local historical figures Susan B. Anthony, Frederick Douglass, and George

Eastman. His characters fight villains like Trinity, a character encompassing racism, mis-education, and poverty. Life-sized cutouts of the superheroes stood behind him as he described his creative process. After creating a collaborative character with the fifthgrade classes, students created their own superheroes too, with special powers to fight for social justice. Among the heroes were those with the powers to fight for freedom and create peace. Their collaborative hero was “Super Miss Stephen” with the power of writing and the ability to make drawings come to life. Dunwoody’s presentations were part of a Black History Day of Learning organized by fourth-grade teachers Jenna Carney, Colleen Hardenbrook, Alyson Tardy, and fifth-grade teachers Taylor Haupt, Ken Rogoyski, (Super Miss) Kelly Stephen, Diane Taylor, Erin Varley, and Special Education Teacher Lisa Haller. “Shawn uses art to uplift urban communities and discuss social justice,” said fourth-grade teacher Alyson Tardy. “I’m extremely excited and grateful that he takes the time to share his talents with our students.”

EXPLORE THE HISTORY AND FACTS OF CROSSWORD PUZZLES

........................... Steve Harrison

Even though a type of word puzzle was found inscribed on the wall of an ancient Egyptian tomb, the first known crossword puzzles are credited to journalist Arthur Wynne, who designed his “word-cross” in 1913. Wynne’s puzzle appeared in a Sunday newspaper called New York World.

~Charles Dickens (1812–1870), Great Expectations

Since its inception, the crossword puzzle has become one of the world’s most recognizable puzzles, attracting enthusiasts from all over the world, and now appearing in virtually all newspapers.

........................Kathy Hammond Advertising Sales Manager

Crossword puzzles are word games in which the answers correspond to numbered clues. The words are put into a grid of horizontal and vertical squares to form completed, intersecting words. When all of the words are supplied correctly, the puzzle is complete. In North America and Great Britain, crossword grids traditionally have 180-degree rotational symmetry. The diagram, or placement of black squares within the grid, must be symmetric diagonally. This means that the pattern of the puzzle will appear the same if the puzzle is turned upside down.

.............................. Cristie Leone Production Supervisor

American crossword puzzles conform to a set of established rules made popular by publisher Simon & Schuster, the original crossword puzzle publisher. The standard puzzle grid size is 15x15. However, 17x17, 19x19 and 21x21 also are used. Smaller 13x13 also are accepted. Many crossword puzzles do not use two-letter words, and three-letter words are kept to a minimum. In addition, every letter square must be part of both an Across and a Down word. Crossword rules are different in other parts of the world. For example, in Japan, the corner squares of a crossword puzzle must be white.

Despite once publishing a statement describing crosswords as a “sinful waste in the utterly futile finding of words the letters of which will fit into a prearranged pattern” in 1924, The New York Times routinely produces what many consider to be the world’s most challenging crossword puzzles. Stanley Newman is credited with completing a New York Times crossword faster than anyone in history. In 1996, Newman completed a crossword in two minutes, 14 seconds.

Crossword puzzles appear in newspapers, magazines and kids’ activity books and are even used in school lessons to supplement vocabulary lessons. Doing these puzzles also may be good for one’s health. According to a University of California at Berkeley study, crossword puzzles may help in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers found that the more often someone engaged in mentally stimulating activities such as crosswords, the less buildup of beta-amyloid plaques in the brain, which are hallmarks of the disease. Doing crossword puzzles also may offer a distraction that helps people reduce stress.

Crossword puzzles have a storied history. They are completed recreationally and in competitions, and cruciverbalists look forward to new puzzles in their newspapers every week.

HOW TO SUPPORT BUSINESSES DURING MANDATORY RESTRICTIONS Recognize that more than food is available for takeout. In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York announced relaxations on laws governing what can and cannot be obtained via takeout, allowing takeout on goods that were previously restricted in regard to takeout. For example, Cuomo announced that the New York State Liquor Authority intended to temporarily relax regulations regarding the takeout and delivery of alcohol. Utilizing such services can be a great way to support local businesses while still adhering to recommendations designed to slow the spread of COVID-19.

HOW TO ENCOURAGE KIDS TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR TEETH

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

CT Scan Unlikely to Miss Advanced Lung Cancer --DEAR DR. ROACH: Is it possible for X-rays and a CT scan to miss advanced lung cancer? My brother worked two days before he died. He went to the hospital, was admitted to hospice and died the next day. I wonder if he knew at least a year ago, but didn’t tell anyone. He said his scans showed pneumonia. His son was called to the hospital and spent the day with him until he died. During his last day, my brother told him that he had lung cancer and that it was not diagnosed earlier. -- N.W. ANSWER: I am very sorry about your brother. Lung cancer, especially early lung cancer, is often missed on a regular chest X-ray. Pneumonia can accompany early lung cancer, and the pneumonia can hide the cancerous mass, but experienced radiologists should be able to see something. Also, experienced clinicians should check an X-ray weeks after a pneumonia to be sure there is no cancer in a person at risk, such as a current or former smoker. Advanced lung cancer is only very rarely missed on X-ray, and should essentially never be missed on a CT scan. While I can’t say it’s impossible, it’s much more likely that a year ago he was told that he had lung cancer and did not say anything, perhaps to spare his family’s feelings, or perhaps he didn’t want the sympathy and attention that accompany a diagnosis such as advanced lung cancer. DEAR DR. ROACH: What does a person do when symptoms are vague and hard to explain? I am an 82-year-old woman. I started feeling discomfort in one breast about three weeks ago. It felt like irritation from a bra. I did all the things I thought I should, and three weeks later the symptoms are the same or slightly worse. Nothing looks or feels different when I touch it. Do I see my primary doctor (he’s never seen me naked), or find a gynecologist? How do I present this issue? I feel like a fool. -- V.B. ANSWER: Both clinicians should be able to appropriately evaluate this concern. You should go to whoever you are more comfortable seeing. What you should not do is ignore it. In your particular case, it’s unlikely that your symptoms are because of something serious. Breast discomfort is common and only rarely due to breast cancer, which is what you must surely be concerned about. You should NEVER stop yourself from seeing your doctor for fear of not being taken seriously. Primary doctors like me and gynecologists are very familiar with women coming in with breast symptoms, and we take them seriously. Clinicians know how justifiably concerned women are about breast cancer. Most often, a woman can be reassured with a careful history and physical exam; other times, a mammogram or ultrasound may be ordered. You don’t want to regret missing that visit to the doctor. It is often said that the only foolish question is the one that is not asked. This situation is analogous: It would be foolish for you not to go. While the overwhelming likelihood is that you will be reassured, in the unlikely event there is something wrong it’s far better to know about it earlier than later. ***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2021 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Parents of young children know that getting kids to brush their teeth can sometimes feel like pulling teeth. Kids have a long history of disliking dental care, which can frustrate parents who know the importance and long-lasting benefits of proper dental hygiene. While many youngsters may never excitedly run to the bathroom to brush their teeth, parents can try various approaches to get kids to embrace proper dental care. Start early. Parents should not hesitate to begin cleaning kids’ teeth once the first tooth appears. The earlier dental care is part of a child’s routine, the more likely he or she is to accept it as part of everyday life. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends using a softbristled brush with a small head. Ideally, use a toothbrush designed for infants, brushing teeth once per day at bedtime. The AAPD advises taking kids to visit a pediatric dentist when the first tooth appears, or no later than the child’s first birthday. Make it a group effort. Young children love to imitate their parents’ actions and behaviors, and moms and dads can use that adoration to their advantage when trying to get kids to brush their teeth. Brush teeth together as a family, making it seem like an enjoyable twice-daily activity. Get down on kids’ level and show them how to brush. If kids are resistant, engage them in conversation while brushing so they don’t even realize they’re cleaning away. Involve kids in choosing their dental care products. While parents should be mindful of the type of toothbrush their children use, always sticking with products recommended by their child’s pediatric dentist, let youngsters choose their toothbrush and toothpaste. Kids might prefer a particular flavor of toothpaste, and a colorful toothbrush with a favorite film or television character might make kids more enthusiastic and less fussy about brushing. Compliment kids after positive dental appointments. When pediatric dentist appointments go well, compliment children and express your pride in them for taking dental hygiene as seriously as they do.

Put an empty basket in a central location, using it to gather stray items scattered around main living areas. Once everything has been collected, items can be returned to their rightful place. • Make the bed. One of the easiest ways to keep a room looking neat is to make the bed each day. Store clean linens in a pillow case so the entire set is together and ready to go. • Purge closets and cabinets. There’s no point allowing old, stained or damaged items to take up space. Set aside days to clear expired medication from the bathroom cabinet, discard ripped or ill-fitting clothing from the closet, or to dispose of broken toys in a nursery. • Write things down. Tasks seem more manageable when they are written down in black-and-white and can be crossed off as completed. Writing things down also helps make the mind feel more organized. • Exercise caution before buying. Don’t buy more than you need; otherwise, you’ll have to find space for extra items. Also, keep inventory of food and supplies in the house so you’re not unwittingly buying duplicates. • Sort mail and paperwork. Establish different categories for papers so they can be sorted and discarded as needed. These may include bills, invitations, school papers, and junk mail. Reduce paper clutter by opting for digital correspondence when possible. • Make one repair at a time. Tackle that source of stress by focusing on one repair and seeing it through to completion. • Delegate the work. If kids want to help organize, let them. It can be a fun project for an adolescent to rearrange the pantry or offer their ideas for corralling messes. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

CARPET/FLOORING MAKE FLOORS SHINE LIKE NEW Restoring shine to flooring involves making sure the floor is clean. Dirt and grime can diminish the color and look of flooring. Homeowners are urged to use products designed for their particular flooring material, such as wood, laminate, stone, or vinyl. Products oftentimes are not interchangeable. Begin by thoroughly sweeping or vacuuming the floor. Clean along all surfaces of the floor, including under furniture where dust and dirt tends to accumulate. Use the hard-floor setting on a vacuum to avoid having the brush rolls scratch or damage the flooring. Laminate can scratch easily and hardwood flooring is not impervious to dings and scratches. Quite often a dry mop or a static-charged mopping cloth effectively picks up debris left behind on many flooring surfaces. Although many commercial cleaners can clean flooring, homemade mopping solutions are sometimes just as effective. Keep in mind that wood, laminate and vinyl should not be soaked in water. A little liquid can go a long way on these surfaces. Water and other liquids can seep between laminate and wood boards, potentially contributing to swelling and damage over time. Also, resist the urge to use too much soap. Soap can leave behind a residue that dulls the finish of the floor. Vinegar-based solutions can work well on a wide variety of flooring types and help cut through any sticky residue left behind from cooking, cleaning and the activities of daily life. Many wood-flooring cleaners and polishes are oil-based to condition the wood in the process. Whenever making one’s own solution, test a small amount in an inconspicuous spot to make sure it will not damage the flooring.

HOW TO M AKE OLDER HOM ES M ORE ENERGY EFFICIENT Add insulation. M any older homes are poorly insulated. But according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, adding insulation can reduce energy costs by as much as 50 percent. Installing insulation can be tricky, especially if insulation w as not originally included in your home, as is sometimes the case w ith older homes. Insulation can become damp and prove ineffective if installed improperly. Damp insulation also may contribute to mold grow th and rot in the home’s framing. Older homes may be lacking adequate insulation around attics, craw l spaces, basements, heating and cooling ducts, and w ater pipes. Cover your w ater heater w ith an insulated w ater heater blanket so the heater retains more heat and consumes less energy to heat the w ater.

THE CONNECTION BETWEEN BEER & LENT In the weeks leading up to Easter, practicing Christians commonly commit to a period of fasting and abstinence known as Lent. This commitment commemorates Christ’s 40-day journey into the desert, and the sacrifices modern day Christians make are meant to replicate those made by Christ during that period. Many Christians abstain from alcohol during Lent, but those who do may not realize that beer played a significant role in helping a small community of 17th century monks survive the Lenten fasting season. Monks from the Order of St. Francis of Paola, often referred to as “Paulaner monks,” fasted from all solid foods throughout the season of Lent during the 1600s. According to the Paulaner Brewery, the monks, originally from southern Italy, relocated to Bavaria, once an independent country but now a southern state in Germany, in the 1600s. Their strict religious orders forbade the monks from consuming solid food during Lent, but they still needed nutrients to sustain them. So the monks concocted a strong brew loaded with carbohydrates and nutrients. The monks must have liked the beer, as they continued to brew it and even began selling it in their community. An early doppelbock, the beer was one of the first offerings from the Paulaner Brewery, which opened its doors in 1634 and remains open today.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * In 1960, during a period of high tensions between Havana and Washington, a Cuban cow got hit by a chunk of a falling U.S. satellite. Islanders got a dig in at their American neighbors by parading another cow through the streets sporting a sign that read, “Eisenhower, you murdered one of my sisters!”

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Need a quick fix for tarnished brass? Look in your fridge. Ketchup, applied liberally then buffed off, will remove tarnish in a pinch. * Use a sticky note to clean the cracks in your keyboard. First hold it upside down and shake to remove crumbs. You’d be surprised how much comes out. Then run the sticky strip of the note paper between the keys to pick up dust and any other crumbs. * “Many people play drinking games with movies and alcohol, but here’s my drinking game: I work at an ‘office’ job (although we are remote now), and every time I get an email notification, I take a sip or slug of water. It’s got me surprisingly hydrated!” -- P.J. in Florida * If your marker is nearing the end of its life, you might revive it by setting it tip down in a little bit of rubbing alcohol. * “Schedule important doctor’s checkups, like your annual physical and dental cleanings, in the same month each year so you will know when they are coming up. I use my birth month. My mom always has hers done in February.” -- E.D. in Massachusetts * Use a cotton swab to clean out the tips of your earbuds!

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles COVID Isolation Affects Our Mental Health, Too COVID hits seniors hard. Many of us have underlying medical conditions that make a diagnosis of COVID very risky in terms of recovery. But the lockdown from the pandemic has another risky side: mental health disorders. Whether we’re living at home, in a retirement center or a care facility, our isolation has been very stressful. A survey conducted in June concluded that seniors were less negatively affected than other age groups when it comes to mental health. They say we have better emotional regulation, which means we don’t react as strongly to negative events. But the study was done when we were only a few months into this new way of living. (Even the study mentions that as a caveat.) Now eight more months have passed. Holidays without family. Missed doctor appointments. We’ve had to take a crash course in online chat to be able to see and talk to friends and family. Our regular meetings and social outings are canceled. The news has been a daily onslaught of the increasing numbers of positive cases and deaths. A more recent study from Portugal unearthed the truth, however. After reviewing 41 pieces of research from around the world, scientists concluded that “anxiety, depression, poor sleep quality and physical inactivity” have been prevalent among seniors during our lockdowns. If you’re struggling, ask for help. In some communities, hotlines have opened up to deal with this kind of stress. Look online for “mental health hotline” and your state. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention set up a web page in December. Search online for “CDC Coping with Stress” and look at all the offerings on the page. There is a national helpline at 1-800-662-HELP (4357). Or you can just pick up the phone and dial 211. It’s a referral for community services. Stay safe. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.
