LEARN HOW TO WRITE A CLASSIC LOVE LETTER

Give & Take ____________________14

Today’s digital world has given rise to fast, stinted communications. According to the Pew Research Center, texting is the most widely used smartphone app, with 97 percent of Americans using it at least once a day. Across the globe, 8.3 trillion text messages are sent each year. That translates to roughly 16 million messages per minute. In addition to text messaging, social media posts are generally concise and short on depth. The written form of communication has changed dramatically in the last decade, as letter-writing and other forms of prose have all but faded away. But come Valentine’s Day, it can be special to dust off that pen and paper to express oneself via the written word in the name of love. Love letters are cherished keepsakes that can be kept for years. Such couples can illustrate a couple’s present-day love for one another and shed insight on their relationship years later. Here are some steps for writing a romantic love letter or note. • Jot down ideas and inspiration. Make a list of attributes and qualities in a spouse or romantic interest that you would like to highlight. Write down phrases and terms that come to mind. These words can serve as the foundation for the letter. • Categorize your thoughts into three areas. Jot down things that you like and love about the person, things that the person may do for you or your family that you appreciate, and various memories from throughout the years. • Write what you know. Do not feel pressured to make this letter more complicated than it has to be. The words will come when you write from the heart. While you can use other letters to spur ideas, do not lose your voice or try to mimic someone else’s work. • Make the letter personal and specific. Small details are important and make love letters more meaningful. Such details illustrate to a significant other that this letter was specifically written with them in mind. • Disregard length. The letter does not have to be a certain length. Whether it is a paragraph or several pages, the letter will be a successs if it says what you want to express. It doesn’t have to be long if that’s not your style. Writing a love letter can be a wonderful way to express romantic sentiments this Valentine’s Day.

VALENTINES TRADITIONS FROM AROUND THE WORLD In South Korea, men get to enjoy the spotlight on Valentine’s Day, as women bestow gifts of chocolate on them. In return, a month later men reciprocate with gifts for women on White Day. South Koreans take Valentine’s Day a step further on Black Day, which falls on April 14. This is an opportunity for all single people who may not have received Valentine’s Day gifts to gather at restaurants and eat a dish called “black noodles” as they celebrate their singleton status.

ROMANTICALLYNAMED LOCALES AROUND THE WORLD KISSING If kissing is what lovers have in mind, they might like to travel to the municipality of Kissing in the Aichach-Friedberg district in Bavaria, Germany. Kissing is a relatively small area with just around 12,000 inhabitants. Not too far away is Petting, another municipality in Bavaria.

Help Reduce Animal Overpopulation One of the easiest ways to prevent pet overpopulation is to spay and neuter animals. Cats can reproduce at very fast rates. According to the Cat Rescue, Adoption & Foster Team of Central Oregon, two uncontrolled breeding cats can create the following situation if they have two litters a year at a survival rate of 2.8 kittens per litter: 12 cats in the first year, 66 cats in the second year, and 2,201 cats in the third year. Cats reach puberty between 4 and 12 months of age. Female cats reproduce between January and September, and might come back into “heat” every 14 to 21 days until they have bred or daylight decreases considerably. Cats can give birth 60 days after they have bred.

* Save and thoroughly clean foam egg cartons for kids’ paint palettes. The wells keep colors contained, and the flat space on the lid side is great for resting brushes. They are easy to rinse off and just as easy to recycle if you are done with them. * To help insulate your home to prevent heat loss, build up a mound of snow about 3 feet high at the foundation. Snow is a terrific insulator! -- E.S. in Michigan * When topping a pie with meringue, make sure that it touches all the edges of the pie crust. Otherwise it will shrink.

Used items go on sale every day, whether they’re preowned cars or used clothing. Saving items from landfills prematurely reduces the number of new things that need to be manufactured, saving energy as well as money. There are so many ways to make the most of used merchandise and find the things you need. Some ways men and women concerned about the environment can look to preowned items to benefit the planet and their pocketbooks include organizing a tag sale and scanning local advertisements.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

For Cats, Keyboards Are Just Unbearable

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m writing in regard to the article on the keyboard-loving cat. My cats often react as if they’re disturbed by many specific sounds: voices from my phone speaker, noise from the radio or iPad, or clicking from typing on the keyboard. My cats are uncomfortable and confused. I believe that the sounds are not pleasant to them. When they paw at the phone screen or at me, I think it’s an attempt to stop, control or try to understand these noises that are bothering them. I’ve found that if I wear earbuds when using my cellphone or iPad, my cats don’t react. I silenced the “clicky” sounds when writing a text message on my phone. When I need to type, I put the cats in another room with a tasty treat to hold them until I’m finished. Our kitties are trying to adjust to our lifestyle, with all the technology we use today, and much of it is antithetical to their way of being! We need to compromise a bit and make adjustments that help them to be more comfortable. Thank you for your informative column each week -- Patricia D.W., via email DEAR PATRICIA: What a great observation! Most of us think that when a cat walks across our keyboard, they are just seeking attention. But it may be something more. With their keen hearing, all that clickety-clacking may be driving them nuts -- and they’re jumping onto the keyboard to put a stop to it. Your solution speaks to the importance of observing our pets and their behavior to learn what is normal for them versus what makes them anxious or annoyed. Observation can give us the answer to many problem behaviors. Send your pet care and training tips to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Animals, Not Men Suffer Irritable Male Syndrome ---

To improve schools for kids at all income levels, states can implement education savings accounts. Families get public funds to use on the public or private school they choose, suggests Dr. Martin Lueken, Director of Fiscal Policy and Analysis, EdChoice. Learn more at www.edchoice.org.

DEAR DR. ROACH: Is there such a thing as irritable male syndrome, similar to PMS in women? If it is real, does it cycle yearly or monthly? My husband is negative and blames others for things at some times more than others. Also, is there a cure or ways to manage it? -- Anon. ANSWER: The term “irritable male syndrome” was coined in 2002 in a review of animal behavior, among male animals with a strictly seasonal breeding pattern. After mating season in these animals, testosterone levels drop markedly, and the animals exhibited symptoms of nervousness and irrationality. In humans, low testosterone has a set of common symptoms, including low libido and low overall energy. Loss of body hair and decreased muscle mass happen after prolonged time without testosterone. Psychiatric symptoms, such as depressed mood and anxiety, are less strongly tied to low testosterone levels. Most experts do not believe that the findings in animals are analogous to what healthy men experience. While it is possible that your husband has low testosterone, and that this level may be causing a degree of irritability, it is much more likely that his behavior has a different underlying cause than loss of testosterone. By contrast, premenstrual syndrome, where there are dramatic shifts in hormones, is clearly associated with mood swings, irritability, anxiety and depression. As the hormone changes are cyclical, so the symptoms are cyclical as well. No such cycles exist in men for testosterone. I have certainly known many irritable males, however, and anybody can be more irritable one day compared with another. I would note that, especially in men, irritability and being easily angered can be a sign of depression, among many other possibilities.

“To prepare for a future in which the right skills are in short supply, companies need to invest in upskilling their employees,” explained Adam Miller, CEO of Cornerstone, a global human capital management leader. Learn how and more at https:// hr.cornerstoneondemand.com/5for20.

EAT HEALTHY ON GAME DAY Game day gatherings are a great way to make sports more fun. But they also can compromise people’s efforts to eat right, as traditional tailgate fare is not always so healthy. Thankfully, there are ways to eat healthy on gameday. Light beers typically contain around 100 calories apiece. A half dozen chicken wings typically come in at just under 700 calories, though that number will increase when dipping the wings into sauce. Understanding how high in calories these staples can be may compel you to opt for healthier fare. If you want to limit how much you eat while watching the big game, make a conscious effort to track your consumption, even making a small snack bag before the game begins and eating only that once it starts. When you make your own food for game day, you control what you’re putting into your body. Homemade snacks that are low in calories and don’t contain much sugar can help you stay the dietary course.

In winter the stars seem to have rekindled their fires, the moon achieves a fuller triumph, and the heavens wear a look of a more exalted simplicity. ~ John Burroughs, “The Snow-Walkers,” 1866

Thanks for the rescue! Thank you so much to my veryy kind kind neighbor for digging my front tire tire out when I accidentally drove into the mud. We really would have stayed stuck without your help. Thanks again! – Your new neighbor, Amanda COVID silver linings Got some long-standing chores done fixing up the house and yard, that I never had time for. I have become a better, smarter shopper. Less traffic on the roads. Fewer airplanes too. More animal sounds can be heard. Wildlife has been free to thrive and came back into our neighborhoods, great for the grandkids to see. Spent more time with the kids and grandkids. Do not have to wear makeup anymore, mask covers it up, great for a

teenager with acne embarrassment. Also, masks keep your face warmer in the wintertime. I kind of like the 6’ rule. fewer flu cases, and pink eye and all kinds of contagious stuff avoided. Never liked a shopping cart bumping my heels from behind anyways. Clean shopping carts are wonderful. Was able to let my hair turn gray naturally. Sweet Christmas ornament I want to thank the anonymous person who sent me the cute little stuffed dog Christmas ornament in the mail on December 22nd. It made my day. It was so sweet. I have put all other ornaments away but have left this adorable ornament out. I smile every time I see it! Thank you again! Honoring Treaties I am so glad that President Biden is honoring the rights of the Lakota Nation by respecting their sovereignty in stopping the Keystone XXL pipeline through their native lands. What a fight they have had! As a newcomer to Canandaigua, it has been most

impressive for me that a treaty is signed yearly with the City Officials and the native people of this area: the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois Nation). What a respectful and demonstrative example you are to these First Nations and to so many other outsiders! While so many other native peoples who are spread out across this country have been so demoralized by unkept treaties, the Canandaigua community shows its high ideals to the ancestors of this great nation, whose example became the precursor to our Constitution.

HEMP HAS SIGNIFICANT HEALTH BENEFITS FOR PETS

FACTS ABOUT FEBRUARY

(NAPSI)—NaturVet’s veterinarian-formulated pet supplements have progressed over the last 25 years to keep up with the ever-changing needs of pet parents. NaturVet’s newest Hemp for Health product line includes four top products—Allergy, Calming, Immune and Joint— that are now available enhanced with Hemp Seed Oil and Hemp Seed Powder, sharing the same great original base formulas that pet parents have relied on for years.

February was named after an end-of-year celebration called “Februa,” also known as “Februalia” or “Februatio.” Februa was a Roman festival of ritual purification and washing - a spring cleaning of sorts. This festival was later incorporated into Lupercalia, another Roman celebration that has ties to Groundhog Day. January was actually added after February and was named after Janus, the Roman god of beginnings and endings.

Although marijuana and hemp come from the same cannabis family, the plants are completely different in function, cultivation and application. Hemp is grown specifically for agricultural purposes and has been used for hundreds of years in textiles, body care products, paper products, industrial products and building materials. Most importantly, hemp is nonpsychoactive and cannot get your pet high. Hemp has significant health benefits for pets. Hemp is high in fiber; a great source of plant-based protein; is rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids; and contains phytonutrients, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and 20 amino acids. Hemp Seed Oil and Hemp Seed Powder work synergistically with other active ingredients to help provide support for allergies, stress and anxiety, joints, aches and discomfort, the immune system, and overall health and wellness. HOW CHOCOLATE BECAME TIED TO VALENTINE’S DAY Milton Hershey dabbled in commercializing chocolate. Hershey began as a caramel maker, but experimented with covering the caramels in chocolate in 1894. Hershey would go on to develop one of the most successful brands of chocolate in the United States, which included the famous Hershey bar. In 1907, Hershey launched production of tear-drop shaped “kisses.” (The chocolates were given their unusual name because of the “smooching” noise made by the chocolate when being manufactured.) The kisses became wildly popular and made for affordable chocolate gifts on Valentine’s Day. Many other chocolate manufacturers soon began packaging their chocolates in special boxes for Valentine’s Day. Russell Stover and Whitmans are two such manufacturers who have long specialized in heart-shaped boxes or other decorative Valentine’s gifts.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles New World, New Ways of Getting Things Done We’re in a whole new world now, and unfortunately it looks like it’s not returning to normal anytime soon. So many things have changed, and we need to make some adjustments to how we take care of ourselves. Timing: Whatever you need to do, do it earlier than you think you should. If you’re going to apply for Social Security, don’t wait until the last minute. Staffing might be lower than normal, with fewer workers to take up the slack. If you need an appointment, such as for an oil change for your car, do it sooner than you normally would, for the same reason. If you’ve been ordering groceries for pickup or delivery, you might notice a renewed slowdown in available time slots as stores, in many cases, have fewer clerks. Taking care of business: Even if you eligible to receive the COVID vaccine, don’t assume you can get one just by walking in. Make an appointment. Ask about parking and physical distancing. Although the shot is free to all Americans, bring your insurance card to help the provider pay for administering the vaccine. Be proactive: Do you know when your credit card expires? In the past you were likely sent a new one just before it expired, with instructions to cut up the old one. Now, with quite a few things slipping through the cracks, you might not notice your card has expired until you try to pay for a grocery order. Check your card and anything else with an expiration date, including the date of the tag renewal for your vehicle. (Note: I learned the hard way that my state is no longer sending out notices of tag expiration.)

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

Caledonia Library Renovations and Expansion Highlight Importance of Community Libraries BY AMANDA DUDEK

F

or centuries, libraries have long been regarded as bastions of learning and education, and the Caledonia Library, affectionally referred to as the “stone library,” is no exception. The Caledonia Library Association has been updating and renovating its existing building and is set to finish this first phase of its update and expansion plan this spring. These extensive and needful efforts, coupled with the nation’s current social atmosphere, have only served to highlight the importance of libraries in our modern world. The Caledonia Library, an historic site, was built around 1826 by General Gad Blakeslee, featuring load bearing stones from a local quarry. Throughout the years, the building housed a store, an apothecary, a bank, a post office, and gas company offices. In 1910, the Ladies Circulating Library purchased the residence, making use of the entire building around 1919. Always civic-minded, the community utilized the library for the Red Cross during WWI and WWII. As a structure nearly 200 years in age, the need for updates was pressing. One of the most essential updates was the asbestos removal and abatement. “The asbestos abatement was a lengthy project, and the library was closed for a significant period of time for safety,” said library board member, Dick Thomas. “This was a more complex situation than usual. For example, there was asbestos tape on the inside of ductwork which then had to be completely removed from the existing library because it could become a public health issue over time. We are very pleased that we took the extra time and money to completely remove all asbestos.” The abatement work resulted in new floors and carpets, as well. The library also updated and expanded its electrical system to respond to the increase in technology and electrical devices, hopefully eliminating computer cords run across high traffic areas and overloaded circuit breakers. The library’s back windows were replaced, and its pipes and fixtures were updated. New bathrooms, compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, are planned for the new addition. Its stone walls were re-pointed by a father-and-son masonry team to address crumbling mortar, ensuring integrity while keeping moisture and insects at bay.

The historic Caledonia Library “We are near completion of all our current renovation plans with the last significant project being to put on a new roof this spring,” shared Thomas. “The roof sealant was fixed already, removing sealant which had asbestos in it. The new roof will merge with the roof line of the planned addition.” This planned addition is, in fact, part of the Caledonia Library’s major expansion project which will add nearly 3,200 square feet, essentially tripling the library’s existing space. Planned additions to the existing library include a Community Room for library and public use, a new Children’s Room to promote literacy and fuel young imaginations, a New Library Space for growing resources, a Reading Room for quiet study, a West Room as a multipurpose space, and a Library Lounge featuring a fireplace for peaceful enjoyment. According to Mr. Thomas, the timing couldn’t be better. “Libraries are our centers of knowledge, the number one source of facts,” he reflected. “A modern library, such as the one we want to provide, will have online access and current, accurate reference material to help people make their own educated decisions in a time when there is so much

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Planned extension of the Caledonia Library misinformation, including material which is more opinion than fact. We are often led down different paths by what we see and hear through various media and from public figures.” The library’s commitment to presenting facts and guiding patrons to the most reliable information is one service Thomas finds invaluable. “I can’t think of another time in our nation’s history when libraries, which serve as the center of information and facts so people can make educated decisions, have been so important,” he said. “Access to such a resource is crucial.” “We are at a time in our nation’s history when it is so important to be educated on issues before we agree or disagree and become involved in the decision-making process,” he continued. “In a library, one can do one’s own research and come to his or her own conclusions. It is a place to find and share that information, rather than a place for debate. The modern library encourages people to get together and discuss ideas towards a common cause, promoting communication without aggression.” There are many additional benefits to expanding the Caledonia Library, as well. “This expansion will help us offer internet access to the over 25% of Caledonia residents who do not have it at home,” he said. “It will provide space for meetings, be a resource for local business owners and a centerpiece which attracts - Dick Thomas, visitors to our village. Patrons Caledonia Library will also be able to find practical resources, health facts as well Board Member as insurance forms, taxation information as well as forms for filing taxes, business insurance information as well as details about government regulation. This major expansion would help us become a resource for everyone down to the very last person.”

“The modern library encourages people to get together and discuss ideas towards a common cause, promoting communication without aggression.”

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT RETURNING TO SCHOOL Adults who hope to return to school might be surprised to learn that the educational landscape has changed considerably since they were last in a classroom. College students are no longer just young men and women who begin pursuing degrees right out of high school. In fact, the number of adults returning to the classroom has increased considerably, often making younger students the exception rather than the rule, says the college financial planner Straighter Line. According to the U.S. Department of Education, college students 25 years or older comprise 40 percent of all students enrolled in college. Adults who are thinking about returning to school are urged to fill out the free applications for student aid to see if they qualify. Grants and scholarships may be available, and some workers find that employers may match funds or offer some assistance to finance job training courses. Many schools now offer online courses that make it easier for working adults to pursue their degrees. Many working adults are returning to school to pursue new or advanced degrees, as more colleges and universities are facilitating such pursuits. Page 19

GROWTH OF THE SOLAR EMPLOYMENT SECTOR According to the Solar Foundation’s National Solar Jobs Census 2016, there were 260,077 solar workers working at 8,601 solar companies in the United States in 2016. The census also found that the five states with the most solar jobs in 2016 were California, Massachusetts, Texas, Nevada, and Florida. Twenty-eight percent of state solar workers in 2016 were females, making women the largest demographic in the solar industry. Latinos and Hispanics (17.2 percent), Asians or Pacific Islanders (9.1 percent), and veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces (9 percent) rounded out the top four demographics employed by the solar industry. Of the 260,077 solar industry jobs in 2016, more than 137,000 were classified as installation jobs that paid a median wage of $26 per hour. With roughly 38,000 jobs in 2016, solar manufacturing was the next biggest employer of workers in the solar industry.

MAKE CUT FLOWERS LAST LONGER What would Valentine’s Day be without a beautiful bouquet of flowers? In addition to chocolate, cards and dining out, flowers - particularly roses are among the most popular gifts. According to a survey by the National Retail Federation, 58 percent of American men and 16 percent of American women were projected to buy flowers for Valentine’s Day 2016, spending a total of $1.9 billion. Similar spending is predicted for in 2017. Flowers of all shapes, sizes, colors, and aromas can make popular gifts this February. Prolonging the life of beautiful blooms is a priority for those who want their Valentine’s Day arrangements to endure for as long as possible. Keeping Valentine’s Day flowers looking fresh and vibrant takes a few steps. By being diligent, that floral arrangement can last for several days.
