EASTER SUNDAY A festive and celebratory day for Christians, Easter Sunday is a time for sharing the good news of Jesus’ resurrection. His body is discovered missing from the tomb, and Jesus appears to his followers again showing proof that He is alive. Typically, Easter Sunday is one of the most well-attended Sunday services for Christians. It also is a day to spend with family, and many families share large meals to mark the end of the Lenten season.

HOMETOWN Batavia First Presbyterian Church invites you to join us for in-person worship on Sundays at 10:00 am or on Livestream on Facebook Live. You can connect to the livestream (10:00 am) worship through our website at: https://fpcbatavia.org/ or by using this link:https://www.facebook.com/fpcbatavia/videos/ For the in-person worship at 10:00 am, we practice coronavirus courtesy.
THE MEANING BEHIND EASTER SYMBOLS Easter eggs: While Easter eggs may seem like a secular symbol of Easter, their connection to Easter dates back many centuries. CatholicCulture. org notes that the early Christians saw the egg as symbolic of the tomb out of which Christ emerged when he was resurrected. Early Christians even painted Easter eggs, much like parents do with their children today, and even had them blessed and gave them as gifts. Historians believe King Edward I of England, who ruled from 1272 to 1307, dyed boiled eggs and gave them to members of his royal household on Easter.

Homeowners who like to entertain outdoors may want to make their outdoor living spaces more private. Pergolas allow light to filter through but obstruct direct view of patio activity, especially when combined with some gauzy draperies hanging on the sides. An enclosed patio or threeseason room can be a worthwhile addition for homeowners who like to enjoy the great outdoors without being in the elements or on display for neighbors. Structures vary from screened-in porches to greenhouses to removable gazebos. Potted plants or trailing vines can soften the structural edges and help the privacy devices blend in with the natural surroundings. Page 8

INNOVATIVE SCHOOL IS A TRAINING GROUND FOR ARTISTS (NAPSI)—Art classes have slowly but steadily all but disappeared from public schools over the years. Lack of funding has been the culprit, but educators tend to agree that the arts play a crucial role in the academic and creative development of our children.
President
........................... Steve Harrison
One public school in Greenville, South Carolina is embracing a different model and provides a haven for young artists from across the state to discover, develop and hone their talents. The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities offers preprofessional training to its students in the areas of creative writing, dance, drama, music, and visual arts. As a public, residential high school serving juniors and seniors, it helps students refine their talents in a master-apprentice community while receiving nationally recognized academic education.
Vice President
................... Kimberly Dougherty Controller
........................Kathy Hammond Advertising Sales Manager
...........................Manuel Karam
The Governor’s School also serves as a resource to all teachers and students in South Carolina, offering comprehensive outreach programs designed to bring together artists, educators, community organizations, and schools.
Creative Director
.............................. Cristie Leone
The school is supported by its own foundation—The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities Foundation—by raising revenues to bridge the gap between funds provided to the school through government appropriation and the actual cost of the educational opportunities the school provides to its students.
Production Supervisor
................................. Jeff Wasson Circulation Manager
This extraordinary school recently captured the attention of Ovation TV, a cable and digital channel that is dedicated to the arts. Ovation and local cable provider Spectrum acknowledged the school’s contributions to the community and innovative approach to arts education and skills development with a $10,000 award via its Stand for the Arts arts advocacy initiative. SC Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities’ success provides a great lesson for communities across the country looking to support the arts and encourage the creative development of their youth.

S E V RA Pancake Angels Last week, we met two “Angels” at the Cartwright’s Maple Tree Inn. A great conversation ensued over the best buttermilk pancakes. It made our day special. When we went to leave, we found they had paid our check! Thank you to the two great Angels & safe travels! Elected Officials A village mayor sends out a letter endorsing 2 of 3 trustees up for election. One is elected and the one not endorsed is elected. You made it known you did not want the one as a trustee. I hope this letter was not mailed under taxpayer village dollars. I would not expect you to take such a political stance knowing this could backfire on you. It is up to the trustees to market themselves not you. As the mayor how do you do your job effectively now? We expect you to be fair and not hold grudges. Small towns have clicks but your job is to do what is right for everyone.
Easter Fun! On Saturday, March 27 the Riga Recreation Department held its annual Easter Egg Hunt. It looked a bit different this year as a parade was held instead. All egg hunters met at the Churchville Commons and were lead up Main Street by Grand Marshal “Easter Bunny” and then down Buffalo Road to the Village of Churchville’s Steedman Gazebo. There they were met by the Churchville LEO Club members and handed “goodie bags” filled with eggs. They then went and tried guessing how many jelly beans were in
What Teacher Vacation? In response to “Teacher Vacations:” Clearly you are not a teacher and have no idea what is going on with the schools. Most of the teachers are working even harder during this to make sure their students are getting their work done remotely. To say that school tax bills need to be reduced is ridiculous. Schools have had their aid slashed due to the state being almost bankrupt and have had to do so much more with less money. Of course, there probably are a few bad apples who are not really working during this, but isn’t that the case with every profession? If you want to be mad at someone, take it up with the state legislature and governor. Don’t blame the teachers and schools for this mess.
a gigantic water bottle! Arlene’s Costumes provided “Airbrush Tattoos” for those that wanted them. Thanks to the following organizations that made this a huge success: Village of Churchville, Town of Riga, Churchville Lions & LEO clubs, Erin Maysick & her Scout Troop, Arlene’s Costumes, and of course-THE EASTER BUNNY! Submitted by David Thomas, Supervisor of Recreation, Town of Riga
Educational System School employees need to get back to work or give me a refund on my school taxes! We have buildings and buses that are not being used and not to mention the non-use of heat and electricity! Hey all you taxpayers: your districts have big surpluses right now. Bet it would feel better in your bank account.

NEW ENERGY STORAGE TECHNOLOGIES TO SUPPORT RENEWABLES POST COVID-19
Magic Maze – PEPPERS
(NAPSI) — Cleaner air can improve public health, maybe even save lives. Fortunately, renewable energy resources—wind, sun, hydropower and the like—are now producing more electricity than coal. That’s where innovative energy storage solutions come in. They help create a cleaner world, encouraging investment into clean, green, renewable energy. To help, engineers and policymakers are increasingly turning their attention to energy storage solutions. New bi-partisan efforts in states such as New York and the Trump administration are in alignment to support new energy storage technologies that drastically improve the economics of wind and solar projects. The global rise in electricity generation from renewable sources has led to increased demand for advanced batteries that can be used to firm up this intermittent supply. This requirement is particularly important in areas where grid connections may be tenuous, unreliable or even non-existent. Additional demand for advanced batteries is presented by grid applications such as peak-shifting and Transmission and Distribution (T&D) capital deferral. Energy storage systems provide many ways to manage the power supply for a more resilient energy infrastructure, and bring cost savings to utilities and consumers. Batteries allow the use of electricity whenever it’s needed, not only when it’s generated. However, traditional battery economics and performance have not proved helpful as utilities look to increase renewable penetration through long-duration energy storage. The Problem One of the challenges to growing a North American energy storage industry, however, has been a dependency on a supply chain of hardware components, metals and chemicals, many of which come from outside North America. As well, metals such as lithium and vanadium used in some batteries are impacted by price volatility and security of supply. An Answer Those same risks do not apply to zinc-air batteries. Zinc is abundant and inexpensive, with a significant North American supply. Its chemistry is robust and safe. A zinc-air battery has decoupled energy and power, making it one of the lowest-cost longduration battery storage solutions available. A safer, cleaner future requires less polluted air which means replacement of carbonbased power generation with renewable, sustainable sources of electricity. Longduration, low-cost energy storage systems such as zinc-air will be a key driver to a quicker path towards a greener future. A “bet” on energy storage is a wager that will deliver a cleaner planet that will thrive for current and future generations, suggests Ron MacDonald, president and CEO of Zinc8 Energy Solutions, the leader in zinc-air battery technology, a unique flow battery technology using zinc and air as fuel. Learn more : You can find further facts and stats on energy storage at www.zinc8energy.com.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Stimulus Payment Merry-Go-Round A third round of stimulus payments are on their way. But has your second one shown up yet? Next question: Did you file last year’s 2019 taxes on paper instead of e-filing? If so, that might well be the reason you don’t have your money yet. The IRS got behind on processing the paper tax forms we sent a year ago. If all had gone well, those who were eligible should have received a $600 stimulus check (the second one) by Jan. 29, 2021. The IRS has a specific page for you to check the status of your stimulus payment, but it’s only good for the third stimulus check. All information for your first and second stimulus money has been removed from their website. Confused yet? You’re not alone. Start with www.irs.gov/coronavirus/get-my-payment and scroll to Get My Payment. Click on it and fill out the information. You’ll go to a page that tells you the status of the payment you’re to receive now, the third payment. If it says that payment information is Not Available, it means you’re not going to receive a payment the easy way (and might be why your second payment is still missing). On the Get My Payment page, click on Frequently Asked Questions to see what applies to you. Even if you don’t normally file, you’ll need to file for 2020 (preferably e-file) if you want that stimulus money quickly. Look for Line 30 on the Form 1040 or 1040-SR. It’s called the Recovery Rebate Credit. If you received Notice 1444 or 1444B in the mail from the IRS, it will tell you what figures to use. If you did receive the money but your financial situation has changed and you should have received a different amount, click on Recovery Rebate Credit. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Penny Saver PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Sun Exposure Nearly Does in Guinea Pigs DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have two guinea pigs. Yesterday, I took them outside to get some sun. When I came back outside about 15 minutes later, they were both lying in their cage, completely stiff, as if they had been dead for hours. I thought they were dead. I brought them inside and was getting everything ready to bury them when one of them stirred very slowly, and then the other. Today, they are not as active, and they aren’t eating and only taking a little water when I give it to them through a dropper. What happened to them? Will they be OK? -- Analia R., via email
Hello! My name is Sunday. My parents named me after the best day of the week. I am a 3 year old pit bull mix, with a golden blonde coat and an adorable pink nose. I love to play with my pup brother Sheldon and have snuggle time with my family. My favorite treat is bananas in my breakfast bowl! Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.
DEAR ANALIA: Guinea pigs, also known as cavies, cannot regulate their body temperature very well. They should never be put into direct sunlight or a hot room. Your pets suffered heatstroke from being out in the sun, even though it was just a few minutes. This is most often fatal. I’m very surprised that they are both alive. They need to be treated very gently for the next several days. Contact their veterinarian (one who specializes in exotic pets), but do not bring them until the vet tells you to do so. Moving them can be very stressful. Continue gently giving them water through a dropper or syringe a few drops at a time. Place little bits of cucumber, lettuce or melon nearby; these have high water content and some nutrients. Cavies are extremely sensitive to sudden temperature changes, loud noises or rough handling. Be gentle with them and keep them in a comfortable location, out of direct sunlight. Send your comments, tips or questions to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

In the spring I have counted one hundred and thirty-six different kinds of weather inside of four and twenty hours. ~ Mark Twain
WHAT IS COMMUNION? Christians believe that Holy Communion is the receiving of Jesus Christ through the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. The Eucharist is comprised of bread and wine, although some denominations believe that it is not necessary to receive the Lord’s body and blood in each, instead feeling that Christ is present fully in either the bread or wine. Catholics believe that through the process of transubstantiation the bread and wine before the priest becomes the body and blood of Christ. According to catechism and the liturgy, as soon as the Institution Narrative begins, the Lord is present in the elements of bread and wine. The institution of Holy Eucharist occurred during the Last Supper. As stated in 1 Corinthians 11:23-26, Jesus instructed His followers to use bread and wine to remember the sacrifice He was going to make when He died on the cross for people’s sins. While much fanfare is understandably afforded to First Holy Communion, Christians receive the Eucharist every day at church services all over the world. Receiving communion is not a singular act. People recognized that every time they gathered around a table to eat and drink, it provided an opportunity to recognize and thank Jesus. Adults can reinforce this concept to children by explaining that receiving Communion each week at Mass is just as special as receiving it that first time in spring. Holy Communion is an opportunity to enter into an intimate union with Jesus Christ, who Christians believe provides holiness and grace to all who are willing to receive Him.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF VEGETARIAN DIETS
By Keith Roach, M.D.
Many people change their lifestyles in an effort to improve their overall health. Changing the foods one eats is one of the more common ways people try to get healthy, and many people find adopting a vegetarian diet helps them realize their goals.
Strategies to Reduce Risk of Colon Cancer
Adopting a vegetarian diet can be a great way to improve personal health. Vegetarians may now find it easier to maintain their lifestyles than ever before thanks to the year-round availability of a variety of fresh produce and more vegetarian dining options offered at restaurants. Even premade vegetarian foods are more widely available at markets and grocery stores.
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 70 years old. I seem to be getting more polyps (which are removed). In the past five years, I have gone from one diverticulum to extensive diverticulosis throughout my entire colon. I try to have a high-fiber diet and use psyllium in my oatmeal daily. What more can I do? Eliminate red meat entirely and go vegan? -- J.D. ANSWER: Polyps in the colon confer a higher risk of colon cancer, and the more polyps a person has, the more frequently they should be screened, preferably with colonoscopy. There are some lifestyle changes most people can make to reduce the risk of polyps and of colon cancer. Regular exercise and eating plenty of fruits and vegetables are clearly shown to reduce colon cancer risk. Fiber has long been thought to be protective, but the results of trials have been contradictory. Among the many other possible protections to colon cancer, aspirin probably has the most benefit, but aspirin has other risks as well. People at high risk for colon cancer should discuss the use of aspirin with their doctors. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband and I are both 72 and of normal weight. I have fought high cholesterol and triglycerides for many years and have taken various statins for a long time. My triglycerides still trend high, but my other numbers are now normal. My husband eats a ton of processed meats, all the fat he wants and drinks three to five beers per day. His lipid panel results came back today, and his total cholesterol is 167, his LDL is 90, his HDL is 71, and his triglycerides are 29! He has never been on statin drugs. His only med is lisinopril for slightly high blood pressure. What I am concerned about is a CT scan done as part of a study we participated in. My husband’s results have mentioned calcification of heart arteries over the years, and the most recent says he has “SEVERE calcification of coronary arteries.” I want him to go to a cardiologist, but his family doc says that this is not a problem and as long as he keeps his blood pressure low, he can live a long time with this. He is satisfied with that answer. I’m really anxious to hear your thoughts about him needing to see a specialist. I hope you will be able to shed some light on the calcification and the reason why it happens with such good cholesterol readings. -- D.B. ANSWER: There are several important lessons in your story. The most important is that a poor diet increases the risk for heart disease even in a person with normal or good cholesterol results. Of people with a heart attack, 21% had cholesterol levels that would not trigger treatment with a statin drug. I suspect, but can’t be sure, that your husband has blockages in his coronary arteries; the severe calcification of the coronary arteries is an indicator that it is very likely. I would add my recommendation to yours that your husband see a cardiologist. He has a LOT of work to do at improving his diet, he is drinking more alcohol than recommended and because of the coronary artery calcification, I suspect his new cardiologist would be strongly considering medication treatment to reduce heart disease risk. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Approximately six to eight million adults in the United States eat no meat, fish or poultry, according to a Harris Interactive poll commissioned by the Vegetarian Resource Group, a nonprofit organization that disseminates information about vegetarianism. Many more avoid red meat while still eating fish and poultry. Although studies into vegetarianism long pointed out the potential nutritional deficiencies of such a diet, the tides have shifted, and many nutrition experts now note how eating plant-based foods offers sufficient nutrition and can reduce the risk for chronic illnesses. A vegetarian diet may offer protection against cardiovascular disease, some cancers, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. Data published in the Proceedings of the Nutrition Society found vegetarian diets are high in carbohydrates, dietary fiber, essential vitamins and minerals; offer an abundance of antioxidants; and are very low in saturated fat. However, switching to a vegetarian diet is not enough to lose weight or get healthier. Choosing the right type of vegetarian foods - including whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and proteinrich legumes - and controlling portions is key. Vegetarians may have low cholesterol, as well as fewer incidences of stroke and obesity and cardiovascular incidents than non-vegetarians. Whether this is entirely food-based, or because vegetarians tend to also embrace other healthy habits, has not yet been determined.

Genesee County’s Holland Land Purchase Society and Holland Land Office Museum Face Financial Challenge EDITED BY AMANDA DUDEK
T
he year was 1894. Genesee County, New York, was growing and changing fast. Realizing the historical significance of area history could be lost, Mary Richmond founded The Holland Land Purchase Historical Society (HPHS). Its purpose? “The discovery, procuring and preservation of whatever related to the Holland Purchase lands, and all lands that had been owned by Robert Morris in Western New York.” For 126 years, it has done just that. Today, the HPHS is a 501c3 educational non-profit organization which oversees the operations of the Holland Land Office Holland Land Office Museum Museum (HLOM) and, impressively, its 15,000 artifacts. The HLOM mission is to preserve the past of Genesee County, Western New York, and The Holland Land Company for present and future generations. The HLOM features exhibits on Joseph Ellicott and early settlement, military history, agriculture and business, local artists, and other interesting topics. The HPHS/HLOM has been the overseer of Genesee County’s historical artifacts and the “telling of our history and culture” through education and programs. During this time, it survived two world wars, a depression, and the events that affected our ability to provide our community with “telling the story” of its history. Now, the HLPS and HLOM face serious challenges during the aftermath of 2020.

Gradually beat in flour mixture on low speed until well mixed. Refrigerate 4 hours. Heat oven to 350 F. Shape dough into 1-inch balls. Roll in confectioners’ sugar to completely coat. The HPHS has been deeply saddened by the restrictions of the COVID-19 virus and the resulting inability to hold many of our community events. However, the HPHS is not discouraged by the limited number of programs and fundraisers it can physically present to the public. Instead, the HPHS director has successfully accepted this challenge, developing programming through virtual presentations such as the Artifact Video Series, Java with Joe E., Virtual Guest Speakers, and Saturday Morning Children’s Program. Additionally, its Wonderland of Trees and basket raffle have gone forward, but without the annual fundraising gala. Unfortunately, HPHS was unable to hold its annual antique show, mystery dinner theater, its summer kids’ program, a variety of concerts and speakers, its senior bus tour as well as several other on-site fundraising activities. “Our members and volunteers have always been the bedrock of HPHS/HLOM,” said Don Burkel, HPHS/HLOM President. “Now more than ever, we need financial support to continue programming, virtual events, the preservation of our extensive artifact collection, and to continue representing or history and culture for years to come.” Burkel encourages area residents to generously consider a membership or donation.
