Memorial Day: Remembering our Fallen Heroes & Honoring their Sacrifice BY AMANDA DUDEK
I
t is no exaggeration to say we are living in tumultuous times. Some of those serving in our nation’s military are in combat even today. Meanwhile, others have found “battles” being waged on the home front. In fact, it has been said that we are “more divided than ever before.” But are we? Memorial Day, a hallowed day when we remember our nation’s fallen military men and women, has its roots in the American Civil War. This war between the states, in which brother took up arms against brother, was a truly divided time in American history. Thankfully, no matter how vehemently we may disagree with each other today, we have yet to draw battle lines, wage war, and amass combat’s tragic death count on our own soil. The Civil War was fought for many reasons, not least of which was the despicable and heinous practice of slavery which had to be forever abolished. At the same time, the impact of such a massive internal conflict devastated much of our country. It was in this devastation, on the battlefields littered with our dead, over the aching pain of their loss that unity slowly returned once again. General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, was the first to officially declare a Memorial Day in 1868. Taking place in Arlington National Cemetery, the first Memorial Day (then Remembrance Day) was a time to place flowers on Confederate and Union soldiers’ graves. In death, these soldiers were no longer enemies, only brave human beings who gave everything for what they believed in. But oh, the cost! With the advent of World War I, Memorial Day became an official national day of remembrance for every American soldier who gave the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedoms. One of those freedoms,

Freedom of Speech, is a right which demands tolerance, a tolerance that is necessary for the coexistence and peace of any diverse population. Our nation is beautifully diverse in so many ways, yet there are many issues which threaten to divide us, which threaten to engulf our nation in bloodshed, but if violence should come, what then? How many of our estranged neighbors, friends, and even family would no longer be enemies, only men and women who also paid a terrible price? Since World War I, other wars have come and gone, and our present conflict may be drawing to a close. Our valiant soldiers have laid down their lives in defense of a country whose many freedoms we all enjoy. This Memorial Day, may we remember our many ancestors and loved ones who paid dearly for these precious freedoms, and may we honor them always. As we gather together this weekend with our friends, family, and neighbors – especially those with whom we do not see eye to eye – let us remember our fallen heroes. May their sacrifice inspire us to seek peace over violence, to choose tolerance rather than anger, and to reject division in favor of common ground. Love to write? HOW TO CONSERVE WATER AT HOME
GENERAL CONTRACTING
Wash your car at a commercial car wash. Some vehicle owners may enjoy washing their cars at home in their driveways. But getting a car washed at a professional car wash can conserve substantial amounts of water. That’s because many new car wash facilities employ water reclamation systems that reuse water. According to San Diego Car Care, a professional car wash that employs water reclamation technology, each car washed at their facility consumes just nine to 15 gallons of water per wash. That’s a considerable savings compared to washing at home, as the State of Maryland’s Department of the Environment estimates that 100 gallons of water are consumed during a single 10-minute car wash at home using a garden hose.

Honestly assess whether or not you can finish the job. Do-it-yourselfers may have the abilities to complete a project, but they should not let their pride get in the way of their ultimate goal, which is the completion of the project. In addition to money, time or lack thereof, is often the culprit behind stalled projects. Homeowners with full-time jobs, families or both may not be able to find the time to complete a job in a timely fashion. If the project has been stuck in neutral and no sudden windfall of free time is on the horizon, start contacting contractors to finish the job for you.

DID YOU KNOW?
INVASIVE PESTS GO POSTAL: HOW TO KEEP THEM OUT OF THE MAIL
Introducing even one pest to a new place is dangerous. For example, if you mail a single mango infested with fruit fly larvae to a friend, and he/ she throws it into a garbage or compost pile, it could lead to a new fruit fly outbreak that could cost the United States millions of dollars. Before mailing that package of fruits, vegetables, seeds, plants, soils or plant-based handicrafts, remember these tips to keep invasive pests from spreading: • Check if you’re in a location that restricts the movement of the agricultural item you plan to ship. You may be in an area that is under federal or state quarantine for an invasive pest. Go to the “Pest Tracker” at HungryPests.com to see quarantine areas. • Hawaii and Puerto Rico have their own restrictions on what can be mailed to the U.S. mainland. Visit “Traveler Information” at the USDA’s website. • Before you ship or receive such items from foreign countries (including packages from family and friends), contact your USDA office to see if it’s eligible for entry (even if you’ve shipped or received it before). You could face a fine if you send prohibited items through the mail.

• Expecting a package through an online purchase? Don’t assume items from foreign retailers are safe or legal to import. Shippers may not be aware of U.S. regulations regarding restricted items or care about your liability as the importer. Visit “Imports” at the USDA’s website. • If an item is seized by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, make sure it’s not sent again. If you purchased it from a foreign vendor, ask for your money back and don’t accept the vendor’s offer to replace the confiscated item. Mailing agricultural products is not the same as carrying them with you across an international border or through customs at an international airport, as different procedures may apply. Visit www.aphis.usda.gov/ travel to learn more. We each play an important role in keeping our packages pest-free. Whether you’re mailing agricultural items to others or having them shipped on your behalf, take care to follow these reminders, so invasive species don’t spread.

Once a term that dominated newspaper headlines and environmental discourse, “global warming” is now heard far less frequently. Many may assume global warming has been rebranded as “climate change,” but the two are not one and the same. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, global warming refers exclusively to the Earth’s rising surface temperature, while climate change includes global warming but also its side effects. Such side effects include the melting of the world’s glaciers and the growing frequency of drought and heavier rainstorms. Global warming is also used most often to refer to warming caused by humans, while climate change is a term used when discussing environmental changes that are human-caused or natural.

Hi! My name is
Hope. I was rescued in October of 2017 by my Furrever Mom. She took me home to meet my sister Cassie (also a rescue). I am quite the joker and love to hide and sneak up on my Mom & Dad or peek out at them from under the armoire (upside down of course). I bring them presents all the time, but I don’t think Dad likes the snakes very much. I drive my sister nuts chasing her all the time. I love my mom & dad very much, and am very glad mom found me.
NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * With the start of barbeque season, here are two tips straight from my local butcher about grilling meat: First, let meats come to room temperature before cooking. It allows the meat to cook more evenly, and you won’t end up with a cold center and a burnt outside. Secondly, when your meat comes off the grill, give it time to rest before serving. This allows the juiced to redistribute throughout the cut of meat, and you’ll end up with juicy goodness in every bite. -- JoAnn

* “Bring a distinctive towel to a pool party so that you will know where your towel is. You can make an extra-large towel by sewing two smaller towels together, too.” -- U.A. in New York * “For a really fun take on kebabs, use fruit instead of meat. The kids especially love fruit on a stick. If you have some neat cookie cutters, use them to cut watermelon into different shapes.” -- M.M. in Michigan * The best outdoor tablecloths, especially on a windy day, are fitted single sheets. Simply fit the sheet over a standard picnic table, and it’s in place and ready. The elastic at the corners keeps it from flying away. You can look at thrift and discount stores for fun patterns or just plain colors! * To keep ants from invading your patio, draw a thick line of chalk (sidewalk chalk works great!) as a boundary. Ants don’t like to cross a chalk line and will leave your patio party alone.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Are Coyotes Really a Threat in Suburbs? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I bought a house in the suburbs last month. My next-door neighbor warned me that there is a coyote in the area and not to let my cat outside. I’ve read that coyotes are very shy and won’t bother dogs, and they aren’t fast enough to catch a cat. Should I just ignore the warning? -- Pet Dad in Marlborough, Massachusetts DEAR PET DAD: Coyotes have made a comeback in the U.S. and are present in many suburbs and even in the city. While coyotes are less likely to attack larger dogs, they’ve been known to go after smaller dogs. And cats are not necessarily fast enough to escape, either. So, if the neighbors are reporting a coyote in the area, take heed. Don’t let your cat or dog out in the backyard unsupervised. Even if you have a fence around the yard, unless it’s over 6 feet tall (and not all municipalities allow that height) it may not discourage a coyote from hopping it and nosing around. Coyotes are mostly looking for food. They’re opportunists. If there is cat or dog food left outside, for example, they’ll eat it -- and probably come back later, looking for more. This is one way that conflicts with coyotes (and other local wildlife) can start. If they have a reason to come onto your property to begin with, and then start to see your pets as another food source -- you’ve got a problem. To sum up: * Supervise pets when they’re outside. Stay out there with them. * Don’t leave their food or water outside unattended; bring it in each evening. * Consider wildlife-resistant fencing to keep coyotes and other unwanted critters out of your yard. Spring Tire M aintenance Salt, grim e and pot holes can take a toll on tires over the course of a typical w inter. Drivers w ill not get far this spring and sum m er w ithout tires in good repair, w hich is w hy tire m aintenance should be part of any seasonal repair checklist. BRAIN-HEALTHY HABITS TO EMBRACE Cognitive decline is a condition that is often associated with aging, but even middle-aged people can experience memory loss or cognition issues. The Alzheimer’s Association says that more than five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. By 2050, that number could rise to as high as 16 million people. More than 747,000 Canadians are living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, says the Canadian Alzheimer’s Association. Although there is no definitive way to prevent dementia, living a long, vibrant life may be possible by encouraging some healthy habits for the brain. It is never too late or too early to begin health and lifestyle changes. Exercise: Becoming more active can improve brain volume, reduce risk for dementia and improve thinking and memory skills. The journal Neurology found that older people who vigorously exercise performed better on cognitive tests than others of the same age, placing them at the equivalent of 10 years younger. Increased blood flow that occurs with physical activity may help generate new neurons in the hippocampus, an area of the brain involved with learning and memory. The Harvard Medical School says aerobic exercise may help improve brain tissue by improving blood flow and reducing the chances of injury to the brain from cholesterol buildup in blood vessels. Quit smoking: The Alzheimer’s Association indicates that evidence shows smoking increases the risk of cognitive decline. Smoking can impair blood flow to the brain and cause small strokes that may damage blood vessels. Eat healthy foods: Foods that are good for the heart and blood vessels also are good for the brain. These include fresh fruits and vegetables,
whole grains, fish-based proteins, unsaturated fats, and foods containing omega-3 fatty acids. Neurologists state that, while research on diet and cognitive function is limited, diets, such as Mediterranean and Mediterranean-DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), may contribute to a lower risk of cognitive issues. Consume caffeine: Caffeine may help boost memory performance and brain health. A Journal of Nutrition study found people ages 70 and older who consumed more caffeine scored better on tests of mental function than those who consumed less caffeine. Caffeine may help improve attention span, cognitive function and feelings of well-being. Information from Psychology Today also indicates caffeine may help in the storage of dopamine, which can reduce feelings of depression and anxiety. In addition, compounds in cocoa and coffee beans may improve vascular health and help repair cellular damage due to high antioxidant levels. Work the brain: Engaging in mentally stimulating activities can create new brain connections and more backup circuits, states Dr. Joel Salinas, a neurologist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. Working the brain through puzzles, reading and participating in social situations can stimulate the release of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a molecule essential for repairing brain cells and creating connections between them. A good way to combine these lifestyle factors is to take an exercise class with friends, mixing the social, stimulation and exercise recommendations together. Cognitive decline can come with aging, but through healthy habits, people can reduce their risk of memory loss and dementia.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * The maddening but addictive Rubik’s Cube was created by accident. Professor of architecture Erno Rubik built a twistable box with colorful rows of labels on each side in an attempt to design blocks that could move without collapsing the entire structure. After rotating a few rows and mixing up the colors, the real challenge began: realigning the hues! It took Rubik about a month to restore his cube to its original condition. S E V RA God bless volunteer firefighters! On May 8th, 2021, our worst nightmare happened. Five townhouses in Penfield caught on fire. The Penfield Fire Department, along with seven other companies, responded around 5AM to the fire. By then, it was at least a 5 Alarm fire, burning like an inferno. The firefighters worked so hard and risked their lives to save our homes. Three of the townhomes were a total loss, and two, including ours, were heavily damaged with smoke and water. In the following weeks, a lot of people, some neighbors and some we don't know, have rallied around us with donations of clothing, personal products, laundry products, and gift cards. There are many hugs and meals being offered. I have been a volunteer firefighter daughter and wife. Now my son is a 3rd generation volunteer firefighter. I have served as the fire dispatcher. I have never been the on the other side, and now that I have, I have a better appreciation for the men and women who serve this community. Thank you, Penfield Firefighters!
Drones It makes me sick that it is legal for anyone to fly drones equipped with cameras over private property. Parents have no way of knowing who may be taking pictures or videos of their children, and there’s nothing to be done about it. It’s illegal to block the drones’ signals but not for them to surveil private property and families.
Enough Trump A man on a road I travel on had a Trump 2021 sign that was put up in his front yard AFTER the election. He recently replaced that with a Trump 2020 sign that he had up before the election. It’s time to take down all Trump signs.
Political signs Let’s stop the back and forth about the Trump signs. Some people will leave their signs up forever! Let’s enjoy having who we have in the White House.
Fundraiser disappointment A dinner fundraiser was advertised at a local school, which I get every year. The ad said you could either buy a pre-sale ticket or tickets would be available at the door. After driving there, I was told they had sold out. Very disappointed.
Beautiful Downtown Hats off to the Avon Garden Club and Avon Village Crew for planning, planting and maintaining our beautiful downtown gardens. Always a pleasure to drive around the circle and take in all the islands and the blooms of the season. To all those who plant, weed and water, your efforts are truly appreciated.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Help With COVID Funeral Expenses
No one wants to think about it, but it’s a fact of life. People are dying of COVID. They’re leaving behind families that, in many cases, are already struggling with financial worries. Add in the cost of a funeral, and many will need help. The Federal Emergency Management Agency is stepping in with funding. Under the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2021 and the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, FEMA is offering financial assistance for funeral expenses incurred after Jan. 20, 2020. FEMA has started an assistance phone line (844-684-6333) that’s open Monday-Friday, 9am-9pm ET. Its representatives will help get applications completed. The call will take about 20 minutes, so they can get all the details right. Have all your information in front of you before you call. Once you’re given an application number, you’ll need to send supporting documentation to FEMA, typically by fax or mail. To learn more, go to the FEMA website: www.fema.gov. Scroll down the front page to the item dated April 12, 2021, Funeral Assistance FAQ. There are a number of criteria to see if you’re qualified for help. You must be a U.S. citizen, noncitizen national or qualified alien. You must be the one who paid the funeral expenses. Funeral homes cannot call for you. If several of you contributed to the expenses, tell them at FEMA, but typically there needs to be one application. There are a number of categories of funeral expense that might be covered, including headstone, casket, clergy services and more. A warning: Scammers are always looking for the next way to con people out of money. Now they’re calling people (possibly those who were listed in funeral notices) and offering to help fill out the applications for assistance. Don’t fall for it. FEMA is not going to call you. TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Meniscal Tear in Knee Might Not Need Surgery ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: While chasing my cat, I dove to the ground and both my knees took a beating. They were bruised but felt fine. A few days after this, my left knee started to bother me. I put on a brace to see if that would help (as it usually does), but it didn’t. I went to my chiropractor a few days later and had an adjustment and deep tissue massage. The next day, I was walking my dog and had to stop, as I couldn’t move my knee. About 13 years ago, I had a torn meniscus in the same knee, and it healed without surgery with the assistance of my chiropractor, massage therapist and acupuncture. I called my doctor’s office, and he was out of town. His nurse suggested that I go to an urgent care facility to have an X-ray of my knee, which I did. The doctor said that nothing was broken but that I should follow up with an MRI. I saw my doctor a few days later and brought my X-ray, etc. He said I don’t need an MRI. I am not looking for knee surgery, but wouldn’t an MRI indicate if it is a torn meniscus, pulled ligament, osteoarthritis, etc., so I could get the proper treatment? What would that be? -- R.Z. ANSWER: The menisci are ring-shaped cartilage structures that sit on top of the tibia and provide stability and shock absorption to the knee. Given the mechanism of injury and your prior history, a meniscal tear is a very likely possibility. Symptoms that support a tear in the meniscus would include a locking of the knee or a giving sensation while walking, often associated with pain. A careful physical exam can usually make the diagnosis of a meniscal tear. A suspected meniscal tear does not usually require an MRI, as most will heal with conservative management. (I refer nearly all to physical therapy rather than the treatments you used, but I won’t argue with your success.) I reserve the MRI for people in whom surgery would be contemplated. Since surgery is no better than placebo for many people with a torn meniscus (based on a fascinating 2017 study from Finland), I am particularly careful to refer only people who have not gotten better with a good trial of conservative management. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2021 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

FOUR IDEAS FOR HEALTH CARE PLANNING IN RETIREMENT (NAPSI)—The Employee Benefit Research Institute estimates that a typical 65-year-old couple will spend a total of $265,000 in health care costs over the remainder of their lives. This staggering amount of money has the potential to derail even the best-laid retirement plans. Vanguard and Mercer recently developed a new framework, “Planning for Health Care Costs in Retirement,” that identifies practical tips for forecasting your health care expenses. Here are four top ideas: 1. Personalize health care costs. Start by understanding how your health history and current health status will influence expenses. Even your geographic location, marital status and age at retirement will impact your forecasts. 2. Plan for long-term care. This is a tough one to assess because half of retirees won’t even incur these costs, but on the other end of the spectrum, 15 percent of retirees will spend more than $250,000. Consider potential long-term care options, such as unpaid care from family and less-expensive available facilities. 3. Create a hedge in your budget for other expenses. Research shows that retirement spending in virtually all categories other than health care tends to decline with age. By forecasting steady spending in other expense areas, you may create a buffer in your budget to deal with rising health care expenses. 4. Forecast costs in annual spending. There are so many variables involved in estimating health care costs in retirement that trying to plan around a total lifetime budget can be overwhelming. Experts recommend that you focus on annual spending plans instead, provided that you understand costs will rise as you age. For seniors who are struggling to find cash in their retirement budgets to offset unexpected health care expenses, it may be a good idea to take stock right now of all your assets. Many seniors are surprised to learn that one potential asset for generating immediate cash is a life insurance policy. You should review your life insurance policy from time to time and determine whether or not it’s still needed. A life insurance policy is considered your personal property, so you have the right to sell it anytime you like. When a consumer sells a policy—something called a “life settlement” transaction—the policy owner receives a cash payment and the purchaser of the policy assumes all future premium payments, then receives the death benefit upon the death of the insured. Candidates for life settlements are typically aged 70 years or older, with a life insurance policy that has a death benefit of at least $100,000. If you own a life insurance policy you no longer need or can afford, you may be able to generate immediate cash to pay your health care expenses by selling that policy for immediate cash. To learn more about life settlements, visit www.LISA.org or call the LISA office today at 888-921-3793.

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A TEAM PLAYER The ability to communicate, interact and work collectively with others is both a professional and personal asset. But in certain ways, the reliance on technology has made working as a team more complicated. People have grown accustomed to spending large quantities of time alone working at computers or on phones and tablets, potentially compromising their ability to work directly with others when the need arises. According to Monster.com, when it comes to choosing a candidate for a new job or promotion, employers consistently say they want a team player. That means it’s advantageous for professionals looking to further their careers to brush up on their team-building and social skills.
