News Media Professionals Honored at the Field of Thanks BY SCOTT WURTZEL Active Living 50+ ____________________12
Honoring heroes at a Field of Thanks
H
Auctions & Antiques ____________________13
eroes can come in many different forms. One is that of those who sacrifice and work hard for the betterment of their community. The Field of Thanks has been made to honor and memorialize those individuals.
The Field of Thanks took place from June 6th to June 13th, on the front lawn of St. James Episcopal Church in Batavia. The week-long event featured 70 American flags that were displayed to honor essential workers, first responders, and military veterans in the community. One of the flags displayed was bought by a patron to honor “News Media Professionals,” specifically WBTA, The Batavia Daily News, The Batavia, and your Genesee Valley Penny Saver. Dawn Mark is one of the coordinators of the event, and she shares an in-depth look on the event and why “News Media Professionals” were included. “This is the first time we have hosted a Field of Thanks, so these are all new heroes,” explains Mark, not that Phyllis Draycott conceived the project with the desire to bring the community together after a difficult 15 months. “There are 74 community members from all walks of life who were chosen by their neighbors for reasons ranging from appreciation for the simple, poignant love of a mother to heralding the bravery of one of the most dangerous of Army positions: the cavalry scout. Plaques reflect the grieving for creative lives cut short by COVID and by contrast, feelings of joy and victory felt by COVID survivors. The first responders and medical staff who are being honored worked many extra shifts to save lives and to keep our community safe and ticking along as normally as possible. Half of the plaques are military, ranging from WWI through those in active service. More than on Memorial Day or on Veterans Day, these plaques tell a bit more about the men and women behind the tribute. The pictures look like something out of a Hollywood movie. The bottom line is that there is a whole lot of love and pride reflected on this lawn, and that is the great unifier everyone involved has in common.” Mark also goes on to explain the circumstances leading to a patron purchasing a flag for multiple media outlets. “Each branch of the community media has its niche, and they are all vital,” she said. “The newspaper puts it in black and white in something you can tangibly hold, especially if you don’t have a computer and something as seemingly insignificant as the comics and puzzle section became something positive to look forward to every day.” Mark also praises online media for being a fast and accurate source of what is happening in “the now,” as well as the stability and comfort of voice that characterizes the daily routine of radio. “The Genesee Valley Penny Saver continued to provide the community a voice during the Pandemic. Each edition portrayed the struggle of businesses to survive, a hope of jobs to be filled, and a Hometown Happenings section that assured everyone of the resilience of the community to find creative ways to proceed with life in spite of restriction,” Mark noted. “Each media team was working together for the good of the community.” Discussing why she believes having a flag for the local media to be important, Mark explains, “The patron who recognized the News media appreciates the exhaustive efforts of anyone in the journalistic profession to obtain truthful and current information during this Pandemic in spite of all the political rhetoric. The ‘News’ was often a person’s only contact to the outside world, the only company for people locked in their homes. People glued themselves to these reports in hope that their county was faring better than the week before, that another local business didn’t close, that they didn’t see their best friend in the obituaries. The news became an obsession, and it was the media’s responsibility to ‘deliver,’ often at considerable risk to themselves.” The Field of Thanks was successful in the community, with many people coming to attend the closing ceremony at which every hero was recognized and given their flag and plaque. It was a refreshing site to see considering what the community had been through over the past year. Before, people could not gather and spend time with one another; now they were able come together and honor the heroes among them. Mark concluded by saying, “The Field of Thanks is giving everyone the opportunity to voice their many interesting reasons for their own definition of thankfulness. It is community thanking community.”

MEN CAN GET MANICURES FOR THEIR WEDDING DAYS, TOO A variety of wedding day cosmetic preparations are geared toward the brideto-be. Gentlemen generally limit their wedding pampering to a haircut and possibly a self-tanning product to have a golden glow in their wedding photos. As social norms continue to relax and guys grow more comfortable and confident taking care of their skin, hair and bodies, the list of services men undergo in advance of special occasions may widen. One service that many men have already embraced is the manicure. Manicures neaten the fingernails and treat the skin and cuticles of the fingers and can be just as beneficial for men as women. In fact, male-geared hand and foot grooming have already sprouted a niche market, including the Hammer & Nails Grooming for Guys franchise that was featured on the popular show “Shark Tank.” Nail technicians can help guys achieve a clean look and alert men to possible underlying health issues present on their hands and feet. According to Dr. David E. Bank, a clinical professor of dermatology at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, technicians are trained to recognize possible fungus and other infections within the nails. Depending on his profession, a man’s hands may be on display and the appearance of those hands can help close deals or present a more professional look. Manicures can help men achieve that. They’re also ideal for special occasions like weddings, when guys want to be groomed to perfection. GQ magazine advises that the occasional professional manicure can offer nice, even nails without out-of-control cuticles - no polish or gel tips necessary. First-timers may be hesitant to give manicures a try. While salon services can differ, here’s what a typical manicure will entail. • Nails are cut and filed. • Hands will be soaked in warm water and/or oil to soften skin and cuticles. • Cuticles are pushed back or trimmed. • Moisturizer may be applied, and hands are given a brief massage. • Clear polish can be used if desired. However, a thorough buffing also can create a healthy shine to the nail. Men may want to visit nail salons during off-peak times if they are shy about requesting services. Page 3

STAY COOL THIS SUMMER WHILE LIMITING ENERGY CONSUMPTION Maintain air conditioners. Air conditioners contain air filters that, over time, can wear down and become dirty. The DOE notes that the relatively simple task of replacing and cleaning these air filters can reduce air conditioners’ energy consumption by as much as 15 percent. If the unit does not respond after routine filter maintenance, the DOE (energy.gov) lists issues with refrigerant, thermostat sensors and drainage as some common air conditioner problems. Homeowners who suspect these issues can contact certified professionals to inspect their units and perform any necessary repairs.

EXPLORE THE HISTORY AND FACTS OF CROSSWORD PUZZLES Even though a type of word puzzle was found inscribed on the wall of an ancient Egyptian tomb, the first known crossword puzzles are credited to journalist Arthur Wynne, who designed his “word-cross” in 1913. Wynne’s puzzle appeared in a Sunday newspaper called New York World. Since its inception, the crossword puzzle has become one of the world’s most recognizable puzzles, attracting enthusiasts from all over the world, and now appearing in virtually all newspapers. Crossword puzzles are word games in which the answers correspond to numbered clues. The words are put into a grid of horizontal and vertical squares to form completed, intersecting words. When all of the words are supplied correctly, the puzzle is complete. In North America and Great Britain, crossword grids traditionally have 180-degree rotational symmetry. The diagram, or placement of black squares within the grid, must be symmetric diagonally. This means that the pattern of the puzzle will appear the same if the puzzle is turned upside down. American crossword puzzles conform to a set of established rules made popular by publisher Simon & Schuster, the original crossword puzzle publisher. The standard puzzle grid size is 15x15. However, 17x17, 19x19 and 21x21 also are used. Smaller 13x13 also are accepted. Many crossword puzzles do not use two-letter words, and three-letter words are kept to a minimum. In addition, every letter square must be part of both an Across and a Down word. Crossword rules are different in other parts of the world. For example, in Japan, the corner squares of a crossword puzzle must be white. Despite once publishing a statement describing crosswords as a “sinful waste in the utterly futile finding of words the letters of which will fit into a prearranged pattern” in 1924, The New York Times routinely produces what many consider to be the world’s most challenging crossword puzzles. Stanley Newman is credited with completing a New York Times crossword faster than anyone in history. In 1996, Newman completed a crossword in two minutes, 14 seconds. Crossword puzzles appear in newspapers, magazines and kids’ activity books and are even used in school lessons to supplement vocabulary lessons. Doing these puzzles also may be good for one’s health. According to a University of California at Berkeley study, crossword puzzles may help in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers found that the more often someone engaged in mentally stimulating activities such as crosswords, the less buildup of beta-amyloid plaques in the brain, which are hallmarks of the disease. Doing crossword puzzles also may offer a distraction that helps people reduce stress. Crossword puzzles have a storied history. They are completed recreationally and in competitions, and cruciverbalists look forward to new puzzles in their newspapers every week. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
C. Diff Tricky to Treat, But Rarely Terminal ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: In December, I developed an abscess in my jaw from food getting caught in my tooth. I went to see a local dentist who prescribed clindamycin and metronidazole. I came down with a case of C. difficile. I have since found evidence that multiple antibiotics and clindamycin are causes of C. diff. I am getting mixed messages about my prognosis. Some medical people are telling me it’s not a big deal and to just wash my hands a lot. My primary physician, however, gave me the impression that this is basically a terminal diagnosis. She told me how sorry she was and that I had been a very healthy person but am not any longer. She told me that it will most likely recur, and every time it does it will be more difficult to treat until I become antibiotic resistant, and that people die from it. She also told me that she would set me up for the standard yearly appointment, but that I should come see her whenever I need to. I am paranoid about what my future holds and what, if anything, I can do. I would like your opinion of this situation. Any guidance you can give me would be greatly appreciated. -- Anon. ANSWER: Clostridium difficile (“C. diff”) infections are common but can be serious. As you correctly note, many antibiotics are associated with the acquisition of symptomatic C. diff infections, and although clindamycin is the best known, other antibiotics (quinolones, amoxicillin and related penicillins) are actually more common. The antibiotics kill off large numbers of healthy bacteria, allowing the unhealthy C. diff to take over. The cardinal symptom of C. diff is watery diarrhea, at least three loose stools in 24 hours. Abdominal pain and cramping, nausea and poor appetite are common. Fever is less common. Symptoms can start during antibiotic treatment or up to a month after completing antibiotics. Treatment is stopping the antibiotic if possible and if still being given. Antibiotic treatment against C. diff is with the newer drug fidaxomicin or with oral vancomycin; unfortunately, fidaxomicin is ridiculously expensive -- a course of fidaxomicin is $3,000 via goodrx.com in the U.S. at the time of writing. A course of oral vancomycin costs much less, often less than $200 through the same website. If neither of these is available, metronidazole is a less-expensive alternative. Fidaxomicin has the lowest risk of recurrence of the infection, and many experts will reserve it for a person who has recurred after oral vancomycin. For the unusual person who continues to recur after antibiotic treatment, fecal microbiota transplants (processed from stool of healthy donors) have been safe and effective. I am disturbed that you got the impression that C. diff is a terminal diagnosis. Although in rare cases, hospitalized patients can get so sick that they can die from C. diff, this would be very unusual in less severe disease, as in someone who is able to go home from the hospital. Handwashing is necessary to reduce infection to others. Avoiding drugs like Prilosec that suppress acid can help prevent recurrences. Finally, probiotics (live healthy bacteria) may be of use in reducing infection and recurrence. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Always practice summer sun safety When the weather is warm, many people take time to relax at the beach or poolside. While such relaxation can provide a welcome break from busy schedules, it’s important that men, women and children prioritize protecting their skin when spending time in the sun. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, basal cell carcinoma, or BCC, is the most common form of skin cancer. The American Cancer Society notes that each year there are more new cases of skin cancer in the United States than the combined incidences of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung and colon. Despite that prevalence, many people still engage in risky behaviors in the name of outdoor enjoyment. Being safe in the sun won’t take anything away from enjoyable outdoor activities, but exercising such caution will help summer revelers reduce their risk for skin cancer and other conditions.

Summer health and beauty guidelines Get a healthier glow. Many people equate health and vitality to tan skin. However, spending time outdoors in the sun or using indoor tanning beds that expose you to UV rays can increase your risk of skin cancer, including dangerous melanoma. The American Cancer Society says melanoma will account for more than 73,000 cases of invasive skin cancer in 2015. Melanoma accounts for more than 9,900 of the roughly 13,000 skin cancer deaths each year. Sunless tanners and bronzers can give skin that sun-kissed look without the downside of exposure to UV rays. Those who must go out in the sun should wear a wide-brimmed hat and limit their exposure between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun’s rays are at their strongest.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Pets Shell-Shocked by Nightly Fireworks DEAR PAW’S CORNER: What is with the constant setting off of loud fireworks almost every night for the past year? My two dogs are so stressed out that they are sleeping with me at night. -- Larry H., via email DEAR LARRY: I experienced similar nightly fireworks throughout the pandemic. There are many theories as to why fireworks were so popular, but I prefer to go with the most obvious: Some people had little else to do, and no regard for their neighbors. My pets are not too fazed by the occasional crackle of firecrackers, which still goes on here even though the pandemic restrictions are mostly lifted. But some of our neighbors had much bigger fireworks and enjoyed setting them off around midnight or later, with no warning. My pets came flying into the bedroom when these were set off. As a pet owner, it’s frustrating to see our companions suffer from someone else’s carelessness. Even worse, authorities haven’t seemed interested in enforcing noise or fireworks regulations. As we head into the Fourth of July weekend, plan ahead to make things easier for your pets. Create a safe space for your dogs to go to when fireworks go off. Some dogs absolutely need this and can’t be comforted by a hug or treats. A friend of mine created a little den in the corner of her mudroom using scrap plywood, putting bedding and old clothes inside so her giant mutt “Ollie” can hide from loud noises. Talk to your dogs’ vet as well about medication to keep them calmer through the holiday, which may help them better deal with the trauma caused by fireworks. Send your questions, comments and tips to ask@pawscorner.com.

POLL The 2020-2021 school year has been quite a challenging year for students (and teachers). Do you feel it was a lost year academically?
Experience: Many people have embraced gifting an experience instead of an item to their loved ones. Some companies even facilitate such gifts to newlyweds. Websites like Traveler’s Joy allow couples to establish honeymoon registries, building them with activities and experiences they hope to enjoy on their trips. Loved ones can then gift money toward those activities, providing a win-win situation for people who would prefer to gift an experience and ensuring couples’ honeymoons will be that much more memorable.

The program runs for 16 weeks and culminates in a celebration of their accomplishments on October 14, 2021. Included in the program are opportunities for professional development, networking, and developing skills as a leadership volunteer. “Together with our community we are transforming cystic fibrosis from a deadly childhood disease to the best story in medicine,” said Patty Schwarzweller, AED of the WNY Chapter. When the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation was first founded, children with CF typically did not live long enough to attend elementary school. Today, people with CF are achieving milestones like going to college and starting families of their own. We are making incredible progress, but we can’t do it alone. We invite everyone in the Rochester community to help us make “CF” stand not for cystic fibrosis, but for “Cure Found”.
About the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is the world’s leader in the search for a cure for cystic fibrosis. The Foundation funds more CF research than any other organization, and nearly every CF drug available today was made possible because of Foundation support. Based in Bethesda, MD, the Foundation also supports and accredits a national care center network that has been recognized by the National Institutes of Health as a model of care for a chronic disease. The CF Foundation is a donor-supported nonprofit organization. For more information, please go to www.CFF.org.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Staying Hydrated in Summer Heat If there is any mantra we need to repeat this summer it’s this one: drink more liquids. A university study revealed that 80% of heat-related deaths were in people over the age of 60. We need to do everything we can to avoid dehydration when the weather is hot. As we age, many of us don’t have the same body temperature regulation. Poor circulation and lack of thirst can make us vulnerable to the effects of heat. Of those, lack of thirst is the easiest to address, and drinking more water doesn’t need to be a chore. Find out from your doctor just how many ounces you need to drink in a day. Some medications, such as diuretics, might change how your body reacts to heat and dehydration. Ask whether you need an electrolyte-replacement drink for added potassium and sodium. By the numbers: Buy several smaller water bottles and fill with water as many as you need each day to reach the required number of ounces. Keep them on the kitchen counter, where you’ll see them. Keep oranges, strawberries and watermelons handy, or make your own fruit popsicles. Keep an eye on the TV news and weather. Know what temperatures and humidity are expected during the day, especially early afternoon. If you walk for exercise, try to go in the morning. Make a few calls and find out about any cooling stations near you, or air-conditioned spaces such as a mall, if you don’t have air conditioning at home. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Clifton, New York 14428
Dear Community Members, The Clifton Fire Department has made the difficult decision to cancel our 2021 Parade and Carnival scheduled for August 6th and 7th. Since 1935 this annual event has been important to our community and members. This year we are celebrating our 86th year of service to our district and surrounding neighbors. Even with the New York State guideline changes and the pandemic slowly subsiding, our priority continues to be the health and safety of our members and loyal supporters. Our annual carnival is our largest fundraising event. Therefore, we will feel the loss of this income from our annual budget. We are and will continue to look for other possible fundraising events. The Clifton Fire Department annual fund drive letter will be sent out to our fire district residents in the coming weeks. If you are not a district resident and would like to make a tax deductible donation, you can mail a check payable to the Clifton Fire Department Inc., 53 Wheatland Center Rd., Clifton, NY 14428. Thank you all in advance for your continued support. Please be assured that in the event of an emergency, we will be there. Stay safe and healthy. We look forward to seeing you at next year’s carnival when we can gather with family and friends to continue making great memories. Sincerely, The Members of the Clifton Fire Department and Ladies Auxiliary

* There’s been a lot of talk at my house about kitchen gadgets that do double duty, especially since I have made whipped cream for the first time -- in my coffeemaker! I have a French press that I rarely use, until now. Add heavy whipping cream and a bit of sugar to the pot, and use the screen to whip the cream by rapidly pumping it up and down. Magic! -- JoAnn
For the in-person worship at 10:00 am, we practice coronavirus courtesy.

* “To save money on electricity costs, hang jeans and other heavy clothing to dry first. White or light towels and garments especially love the sun. When they’re mostly dry, pop in the dryer to fluff. * “I love to eat pancakes, but I don’t have time to make them every morning. I make a very large batch on Sundays and reheat them through the week. In order to recreate that fresh-from-the-pan crisp (which you don’t get if you microwave them), I put them in my toaster.” -- P.E. in Ohio * “I use an extra coffeepot to brew a pot of hot water. I use the water for both tea and instant oatmeal packets in the morning.” -- M.S. in Nevada * “Before I go to the beach, I freeze an ice-cube tray full of lemonade. HOMETOWN PHOTOS Yard salers beware! So much work goes into setting up a yard/garage sale. Ours was last Friday & Saturday in [local town]. Sales were very slow, and on Saturday, we had a thief visit us. When picking up, we noticed a $10 item was missing. Someone was low enough to steal it. It must have been someone without a conscience. Thanks a lot! So everybody, watch all the people you let into your sale. Like I said, sales were very slow, and it takes so much work to put things out and pack things up afterwards only to have someone do this, too.
S E V RA St. Martin's Sale Thank you to everyone who supported the St. Martin Lutheran Annual Garage Sale, either through your donations or purchases. Proceeds go to support underprivileged children in our area. Unexpected generosity This past week, I ran into Penfield Wegmans to pick up a few things we needed for Dad's Day brunch. When I went to check out, I couldn’t find my wallet. I carry a huge purse which makes finding things a challenge. While I was still searching, a woman came up out of the blue and offered to pay for my groceries. I thanked her for her generosity. I am a firm believer in paying it forward which I will do in some fashion! Clean up thanks! To all those - Village Crew, Law Enforcement, Fire Department, Utility Crews & more - who helped clean up the village and restore power to Avon after the storm on Monday: thank you! Your hard work is very much appreciated! Play ball! It was great to have Avon Little League back this year! Thank you to all of the parents who made it possible, taking care of everything from organizing to coaching!
True Colors Flying the American Flag means freedom for all Americans. Freedom means freedom of choice, freedom to live your life as the best you can, freedom to let other people live their lives regardless of color. Too many times lately, people are only looking at the color of someone’s skin but not what is in their heart. The color of a person’s skin does not define the kind of person they are. To those who only look at skin color: shame on you! Social Security Theft From every paycheck since I was 15, the state of NY has taken out taxes and social security. For 40 years, I have been paying Social Security and have been receiving an annual letter detailing what my Social Security benefit will be based on what I earned and paid into it. I could not opt out of it and use that money for the here and now. So, it is my Social Security. It was established by FDR in 1935 to give the working class some financial security as they reached retirement age. It’s not for the politicians to spend or for the offended-by-everything generation to spend. It’s mine. It’s your parents’ and your grandparents’, not yours to denounce as not our right to recieve. If you want it abolished, go ahead and lobby for its end, but don’t you dare tell us 50+ individuals that we are causing the deficit. We paid into it and deserve what we were told was coming to us. What you are suggesting is the equivalent of stealing, and you should be ashamed of yourself.
Thank you, neighbors! Thank you to all our neighbors for helping us pick up our fallen tree limbs and to the people who stopped to see if we were okay! We live in such a great community!

WORKING PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE Look for ways to be more efficient. Interactions with coworkers can make work more enjoyable, but working parents should not spend too much time shooting the breeze with their fellow employees. Doing so wastes time and only contributes to work-related stress. Commuters who don’t drive themselves to work can be more efficient by using their commutes to read emails, arrange meetings or catch up on projects. Doing so allows for more time to get work done while in the office, which can make it easier to go home on time.
When leaving a job, professionals should always be courteous and considerate toward their current employers.

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A TEAM PLAYER The ability to communicate, interact and work collectively with others is both a professional and personal asset. But in certain ways, the reliance on technology has made working as a team more complicated. People have grown accustomed to spending large quantities of time alone working at computers or on phones and tablets, potentially compromising their ability to work directly with others when the need arises. According to Monster.com, when it comes to choosing a candidate for a new job or promotion, employers consistently say they want a team player. That means it’s advantageous for professionals looking to further their careers to brush up on their team-building and social skills.
