Foods at farmers’ markets tend to be limited to in-season offerings. Some nutritionists suggest eating seasonally available foods is better for your body, because humans ate seasonal produce for thousands of years before shipping and refrigeration changed how people received the majority of their foods. In addition, many people feel that fresh, seasonal foods taste better than the alternatives.

One of the more beloved ways for thrill-seekers to spend a day off is to visit an amusement park. Amusement parks take many shapes. Some may be small, traveling carnivals, while others are large parks that draw visitors from all over the country. Amusement parks typically feature hair-raising rides, games of skill, tasty food, and gift shops. That means there’s something for everyone. Although they may seem like a relatively modern concept, amusement parks, fairs and carnivals actually have storied histories. In fact, historians say that carnivals and local fairs have been around since the Middle Ages. According to History.com, amusement parks, once dubbed “pleasure gardens” and “trolly parks,” sprung up across the United States and Europe in the 19th century.

THANK YOU, WALGREENS CASHIER! Went to Walgreens on Tuesday, July 28th, and Alex, the cashier was not only efficient, but kind, considerate, and patient with me. I had multiple orders, so I went to the check out three separate times. Each and every time, he did not rush me through my orders but was very helpful. As a customer, I really appreciate when a cashier is kind and considerate. Alex was accommodating to my needs, and he did so in a friendly manner. That means a lot to the customers.
SPYING In response to the person who complained about 11 cars parked in their neighbor’s driveway, I’d like to emphasize a few words you used in your rant. You said cars were parked in “his” driveway. Unmasked people were walking into “his” home. Your neighbor makes the rules on his property and in his home. Why are you spying on your neighbor anyway? Ever go to a store that you like to shop at, only to have a slow and unfriendly cashier have to check you out? I have, and it leaves an unpleasant experience in your mind. At Walgreens, in Brockport, I have never had that negative experience. So, Alex, thank you for being so attentive to the needs of your customers. THE PITTSFORD DAIRY What a fun, welcoming atmosphere to help cool down these hot days. Happy, helpful employees and they know how to make a shake! along the shoulder of the road. She was blowing all the grass and debris into the road on both sides. As I went by, I was peppered by grass and small stones. I looked to see if my car was scratched. Luckily, it wasn’t. I know it wasn’t intentional, but if my car had been scratched or dented, I would’ve gotten a police report and have had you pay to fix any my car. If you insist on blowing the grass into the road, at least stop as cars go by.
FOREVER GRATEFUL! On Friday, July 24th I took a hard fall in front of Aldi’s in Batavia. I just want to thank so many people who came to my aid that day. May God’s blessings fall on all of you for all you did on my behalf. I am forever grateful. Thank you; thank you! LIFESPAN’S LONG-TERM CARE OMBUDSMAN PROGRAM Lifespan’s Long-term Care Ombudsman program extends a heartfelt “thank you” to the 50+ volunteers who are trained to take pictures of children in a public place.
TOXIC NEIGHBORHOODS I am dismayed by all the pesticidetreated lawns. Grass lawns are the biggest mono crop in the US, covering more surface area, 40 million acres, than wheat and corn, and we douse it with pesticides year-round. Pesticides don’t magically become safe after application. Pesticide residues remain on the grass even if it’s dry. So far, we haven’t heard from the management. We feel we experienced price gouging! We won’t be going back to that place! BE NICE! Apparently, you think you own the public road you live on because it bears your last name. Please remember that your relatives were farmers who fouled up the intersecting state highway with manure, and no one in the neighborhood complained. My name is Theo. I am an about 13 years young orange tabby and have lived with my mom and dad since 2010. I am quite a conversationalist and love being with people, especially curled up on their laps. I am a good traveler, going with my snowbird parents south every winter. I sleep all day in my cat carrier and explore the hotel room all night. Then, I sleep again the next day until we arrive at our winter home. My favorite ritual, no matter where I am, is being brushed. Then you can hear me purr in the next county.

PAW'S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Loud, Stinky Dog Not What He Ordered DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Help! I’m in over my head. I wanted a dog just like a cute, white, fluffy one that I saw on YouTube, so I bought one online called a “Samoyed” and picked it up at the airport. “Mikey” is cute, white and fluffy, but he’s also hyperactive and loud! He barks all the time. He wants to run outside my apartment. He won’t hold still for pictures. He chews everything, he smells terrible and he poops everywhere. I did not pay for this! How can I get my money back? -- Bilked in Buffal DEAR BILKED: You didn’t get cheated; you got a dog. That’s exactly how dogs behave! They are energetic, communicative, living beings. They love to chew things. Their breath smells kind of funny, and their fur can smell funky after a run outside. They need exercise, training, food and love. Samoyeds like Mikey are especially energetic, because they were originally bred for hunting and as guard dogs. You’ll need to keep him on a leash outside, because he will chase smaller mammals, especially cats and rabbits. He’ll get bigger, too; Samoyeds are medium-large to large dogs. Don’t try to return Mikey or get your money back (if that’s even possible since you bought him online). The trauma you’ll cause him may be unrecoverable. Instead, if you have friends with well-behaved dogs, talk to them and get advice. Pick up a book on caring for Samoyeds. And schedule some sessions with a dog trainer. You chose Mikey to be your family member. He depends on you. He’ll do his best to make you happy, but you need to care for him and show him how to be a good dog. Send your comments and tips to ask@pawscorner.com. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Organize a tag sale: Garage sales, tag sales, yard sales, and flea markets are great places to find preowned items. Men and women who are both bargainand eco-conscious can organize their own neighborhood sales where several houses around the neighborhood pool their items for one large sale. Bargain hunters can then peruse the collected merchandise and feel good knowing their purchases are benefitting the environment.
KEEP CALM & DON’T BUG OUT ABOUT THE ASIAN GIANT HORNET by Dick Rogers, principal scientist and entomologist, Bayer Bee Care Program (NAPSI) — Scientific information can ease the fears of many people concerned about the arrival of the Asian giant hornet in the United States. What do we know? Hornets are found in many parts of the world and play a vital role in the balance of natural ecosystems through pollination, biodiversity and natural pest control. Unfortunately dubbed the “murder hornet,” the Asian giant hornet (AGH), the world’s largest, was sighted for the first time in the United States in December 2019. Who (or what) is at risk? While the AGH is large in size and has a big sting compared to other hornets, it is typically not aggressive with humans (Whew! That’s a relief). As always, those allergic to bee or wasp stings should practice caution and avoid contact with hornets in general. However, the AGH can pose a risk to honey bee colonies because it feeds on large insects, including wasps and bees. So far, they’ve only appeared in the northwest part of the United States, and monitoring efforts by the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) are underway to better understand these hornets and help educate beekeepers on how to protect their colonies. On top of this, our team at Bayer is taking action by organizing a first detection trapping program in North Carolina and Missouri, which will be deployed in early July. We will then share our results with the WSDA at the end of the season. While we do not expect to catch any AGH this year, early detection is key to an effective eradication effort if needed. You can be confident that the early introduction of the AGH in the United States and Canada is being closely monitored by professionals who have management plans in place should there be any future sightings. There’s no need to worry about catching a glimpse of these hornets in your yards or gardens, as they are not yet established in the United States. In fact, the only hornet that is established in our country, the European hornet, has been around since the late 1800s. How can we help protect the bees? It’s not only researchers and entomologists who can help protect honeybees. Everyone can support bees by getting outside to plant pollinator-friendly gardens or flowers. As pollinators play a vital role in our ecosystem, crop production and biodiversity, I recommend you stay calm and keep gardening to provide your fuzzy friends with the flowers and habitat they need to thrive. Learn more about how to plant pollinator-friendly gardens that help bees, monarchs and other important pollinators by visiting https://beehealth.bayer.us/home. Dick Rogers has been a professional entomologist for more than four decades and has been keeping and studying bees for over 40 years. He joined the Bayer Bee Care Program in 2009.

Removing Gallbladder Didn’t End Gallstones --DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband had his gallbladder removed many years ago. In the past few years, he has had six ERCPs to remove gallstones from his bile duct, as he is still making them. He has been told to drink lots of water but that there is no preventive remedy. Do you have any suggestions for how to prevent these gallstones from forming? -- B.A.P. ANSWER: Ordinarily, removing the gallbladder stops new gallstones from forming. Having a gallstone left after surgery is not uncommon, but it is very uncommon for people to make multiple new stones years after surgery. One possibility is a diverticulum of the common bile duct. The common bile duct drains bile from the liver and gallbladder into the small intestine; it drains pancreatic fluid, too. A diverticulum is a blind pouch. It’s possible for a stone to form there, so you should find out if he has one. They should have seen it on one of the ERCPs (a special endoscopy that looks at the bile and pancreatic ducts). If present, a diverticulum can be removed surgically. I asked my colleague at Weill Cornell, Dr. Arun Jesudian, for his expertise, and he said he has seen multiple stones in the liver due to parasitic infections, often in Asian patients. That may require surgical treatment. He also discussed doing a sphincterotomy, which is a procedure to open the end of the common bile duct, to let stones pass through easily. Your husband may benefit from expanding it. Finally, there is a medication to reduce gallstones, ursodiol (Actigall), which Dr. Jesudian feels had no real downsides and might well help. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a female, 53, who suffers from and is being treated for IBS. I have a history of colon cancer in my family. My family members and I go through regular screenings and so far, we’ve been clean. Once in a while, I wake up feeling a sharp, stabbing pain in my rectal area that lasts no more than 20-30 minutes before going away. These pains occur no more than once a month, sometimes every few months, but the pain often happens while I’m asleep and wakes me up. Luckily, there have been no bloody or black stools or urine following this, much to my relief. I’ve talked to my gastroenterologist about it, and he’s as clueless as I am. I do exercise and watch what I eat. Could it be gas? At least the pain is short-lived, so it doesn’t interfere with my daily activities or routine. -- A. ANSWER: Irritable bowel syndrome is a common problem, found more frequently in women, that ranges from annoying to lifechanging. Although it does not predispose to cancer or reduce life expectancy, IBS can have dramatic effects on a person’s social and work lives. The hallmarks of IBS are bowel changes (diarrhea, constipation or sometimes both, alternating) and abdominal discomfort. The discomfort is usually described as cramping, but it is not unheard of to be described as sharp or stabbing. I believe a colonoscopy is appropriate to be sure IBS is not actually a different problem, such as inflammatory bowel disease. Black or bloody stools would be concerning for IBD not IBS. Your symptoms are not typical for colon cancer, which often has no symptoms until it is quite advanced, making regular screening so important. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. ochester Accessible Adventures, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, is responding to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic with an ambitious inclusion training movement. Rochester Accessible Adventures Promotes Inclusion of People with Disabilities in Recreation & Sports with Ambitious Online Training Movement During Covid-19. The #WeWillInclude movement connects youth ages 6+ and adults to free 3-hour online training which promotes knowledge and skills for creating inclusive recreation and sports settings. Rochester Accessible Adventures has set the goal of training 2,020 youth and adults in 2020. “In the face of the Covid-19 pandemic, it is imperative that we do not lose the momentum we have gained towards creating a community that is inclusive of youth and adults with disabilities,” said Anita O’Brien, executive director of Rochester Accessible Adventures. “We are very excited about new partnerships we are forming which will foster whole communities of Inclusion Ambassadors to promote inclusion and work with us to remove physical and social barriers which keep people with disabilities from accessing recreation and sports alongside their family members, schoolmates, peers, and work friends.” The #WeWillInclude movement has two components: a way for corporations and philanthropic giving groups to financially support the effort, and online training that is perfect for this extraordinary time when people are staying close to home and learning to rely on their screens for unique learning opportunities for themselves and their families. A number of groups that typically spend time in person during the summer are utilizing the online training for their staff and participants who continue to meet virtually. “Girl Scouts of Western New York values diversity, equity, and inclusion and is proud to join in the #WeWillInclude movement as a way to expand efforts to build a community of young leaders who promote inclusion,”said Alison Wilcox, CEO of Girl Scouts of Western New York. “We look forward to exploring ways our troop leaders, camp counselors, and girls can continue to build these principles of inclusion throughout all of our programs across Western New York as we conduct Summer Camp At Home and future Girl Scout programs.” A video about the ways to be involved in the movement is circulating on social media and outreach networks that have extended across the country, appealing to summer camp programs, schools, social and leadership groups. SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles
Getting Up Off the Floor With aging, we lose muscle. With all the staying home we're doing now, we're losing more muscle. We have to fight against that. One serious result of losing muscle at our age is the simple task of getting up off the floor. It can happen to anybody our age: You look for something at the back of the bottom shelf of the refrigerator, and suddenly there you are, sitting on the kitchen floor, unable to get up. Even if you can reach the phone to call for help, think about what happens next. The EMT crew will show up, but they won't come rushing in. Not nowadays. Now they want to determine whether or not you're likely to have the COVID virus. If there's any risk at all, they're likely to suit up with all their biohazard gear before they even come in the house. The best way to avoid all that drama is to not lose those muscles and to know a few techniques for getting up again. Put these search words into YouTube or even your browser: "seniors get off floor muscles." Some specific YouTube channels you can search through for helpful exercises and techniques are "Eldergym Fitness for Seniors," "Ernie Schramayr" and "Bob & Brad." (These last two guys are physical therapists with a great sense of humor. In fact, click Videos and look through all their offerings.) When you find something you like, bookmark it. Then, when you have the muscles and the technique, test it once a week. Get down on the floor, get up. Even if you're certain you'd have no problems, test it anyway. With aging you never know.
This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

DID YOU KNOW? Pizza continues to remain a popular comfort food and go-to staple for quick, family-friendly meals. Statistics Brain reports that 93 percent of Americans eat at least one piece of pizza per month. Five billion pizzas are sold worldwide each year, and the United States accounts for three billion of those pizzas. The average person will eat 46 slices of pizza each year. The world can thank Raffaele Esposito for creating the first pizza that resembled the pizza the world knows today. Esposito created the pizza for Italy’s Queen Margherita when she visited Naples in 1889. The crust was garnished with tomatoes, mozzarella and basil to represent the national colors of Italy: red, white and green.

HOW TO PREP YOUR YARD FOR SUMMER PARTIES Protect your guests from insects. Insects like mosquitoes can quickly turn a swinging soiree into a nuisance, so purchase some decorative citronella candles to repel mosquitoes. Tiki torches along walkways and around the patio furniture may also prove effective insect repellants. In addition, if there are any areas around your property where water has gathered, such as bird fountains or puddles from recent rains, do your best to get rid of that water. Water attracts many insects, which lay their eggs in the standing water. The less standing water around your property, the less likely any uninvited insect guests are to appear. Page 22

Embrace eco-friendly activities. Various activities, from organic gardening to planting trees to beach cleanups, provide a great way to get outdoors and help the planet at the same time. Men and women who grow their own vegetables can take solace knowing that the vegetables they’re eating each night did not require the depletion of any natural resources to go from garden to table. Signing up for beach cleanups can prevent trash, including harmful plastics, from making its way into the world’s oceans, and such cleanups provide a great excuse to go to the beach.

Our magnolia tree is dropping some kind of black residue on the ground. Wondering if it has a fungus problem? What should be done to eliminate it? - Pam M. Yes, your Magnolia tree does have a problem but it is not a fungus. Rather, the problem is an insect called “Magnolia Scale.” This is an insect that starts out as a small, six-legged crawler in early spring which finds a tender spot on a branch, attaches itself and begins feeding on the sweet sap of the Magnolia tree. As it feeds, it grows a protective shell or covering which looks like a scale and turns whitish. The scale insects
excrete excess sap called “Honey Dew” which drops down on lower leaves and on anything below the tree. A fungus called “Sooty Mold” grows on the coating of honey dew and turns black. While the black residue is sticky and unsightly, it is usually not harmful. The scale infestation, however, can weaken the tree and cause limbs to die back.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: “The greatest weapon against stress is our ability to choose one thought over another.” -- William James
ORANGE GALETTE WITH BEET GORGONZOLA SALAD Recipe courtesy of Momma Cuisine
Prep time: 30 minutes Cook time: 15-20 minutes Servings: 12 jar (16 ounces) Aunt Nellie’s 1 Sliced Pickled Beets nonstick cooking spray 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, approx. 16-by-11 inches 1 tablespoon olive oil, divided 4 navel oranges, segmented 4 ounces crumbled Gorgonzola or other blue cheese, divided 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt (opt’l) 1/4 teaspoon dried basil 2 cups mixed baby salad greens 1/4 cup chopped pecans, toasted if desired Heat oven to 400 F. Drain beets well; set aside on paper towels to absorb remaining liquid. Discard liquid or save for another use. Spray large sheet pan with nonstick cooking spray. Gently place puff pastry sheet on pan. With pastry brush, gently spread 1/2 tablespoon olive oil on pastry sheet. Place about half the orange segments in two rows on top of pastry sheet, leaving 1-inch margins on all sides. Fold edges of pastry sheet to create border. Sprinkle 2 ounces crumbled Gorgonzola over oranges. Sprinkle with salt, if desired, and basil. Bake until golden brown, about 15-20 minutes. Remove from oven; cool on wire rack. Coarsely chop beets. In large bowl, toss together remaining orange segments, salad greens and chopped beets. Drizzle with remaining olive oil; toss gently to combine. Cut cooked galette into 12 pieces. Top with beet salad. Sprinkle with remaining cheese and pecans.
