HOST A SPORTS VIEWING PARTY TO REMEMBER
585.219.4053
Hundreds of millions of people across the globe enjoy sports, and many are fond of gathering with fellow fans to watch their favorite teams play, whether in-person or on television. Viewing parties are a great way to watch the big game with fellow fans, and such gatherings don’t have to require all that much effort on the part of hosts.

Make it a potluck affair. Potluck affairs make perfect sense for sports viewing parties, so don’t be surprised if guests offer to whip up some homemade guacamole or a buffet-style dish for the big party. Encourage this, asking guests to share what they’re bringing with other invitees so there are no duplicate offerings. Vary the food and beverage menu. Chicken wings and beer might seem like go-to foods and beverages for the big game, but even sports bars are increasingly recognizing sports fans’ desire for healthy foods. It’s still acceptable to serve staples like wings, nachos, chips, and pretzels, but try to provide some healthy fare like celery and salad as well. Even wholegrain pretzels might be more enticing to guests watching what they eat. In addition, provide alternatives to alcohol, such as water, soda and juice, for guests who are abstaining. Upgrade your television. Projection screens are go-to options for many avid sports fans, But projectors and screens may stretch some sports fans’ budgets. A 4K ultra-HD television can be an affordable option depending on the size of the television, and such devices provide incredibly crisp pictures that can make sports fans feel as though they’re inside the stadium cheering on their favorite players.

Purchase a sound system. Today’s televisions are sleek and thin. While that saves space and provides more aesthetic appeal than the bulky televisions of yesteryear, thin designs leave little room for sound tech. As a result, it can be hard to hear what’s going on in the game without a sound system. Sound systems are relatively inexpensive; just make sure to purchase one that is compatible with your television.

HOW TO REGISTER TO VOTE Election Day occurs every November, and it’s the duty of all eligible United States citizens to exercise their right to vote. Doing so is the easiest w ay Americans can actively participate in government. Participating in federal, state and local government can be done in many w ays, but few are as easy and important as voting. The follow ing are a few voting guidelines to consider as Election Day approaches. ELIGIBILITY: Only United States citizens can vote in federal, state and local elections. In many states, voters must be 18 years old to vote. How ever, some states do afford 17-year-olds the right to vote. Voter eligibility may also depend on the voter’s residency. Each state has its ow n residency requirements. To learn the requirements in your state, visit the United States Election Assistance Commission at w w w.eac.gov. REGISTRATION: Voters must register to vote before they can vote in an election. The National M ail Voter Registration Form is accepted in most states, and this form can be found at w w w.eac.gov. In addition to helping voters register, this form can be used to update one’s registration due to a change of name or make a change of address or register w ith a particular political party. North Dakota, Wyoming, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands do not accept the National M ail Voter Registration Form, w hile New Hampshire only accepts it as a request for an absentee voter mail-in registration form. Residents of these states or territories should consult their local state election office to learn how they can register to vote. Voters may also be able to register to vote in person at various public facilities. This varies from state to state, but such facilities may include the nearest Department of M otor Vehicles office, the local election office, public assistance agencies, armed services recruitment centers or any public facility that has been designated as a voter registration agency by the state. Some states allow voters to register to vote online. Contact your local state election office to learn if your state allow s online voter registration. The state registration deadlines vary from state to state as w ell. Contact the state election office no less than 45 days in advance of Election Day to learn the requirements in your state.

DEAR JESSICA: As long as the wound seems to
be healing, Rog should be fine. Check the area once a day and reapply antibacterial ointment. If it begins to appear puffy and red, or Rog seems very distressed by it, take him to the vet for further evaluation. Most minor scratches on a dog’s skin and paws can be treated at home using the household first-aid kit. You also can build a pet first-aid kit that is easy to access when you walk into the house. In addition to antibacterial ointment (avoid products with hydrocortisone), it should have antiseptic solution, water-based lubricant like KY (not Vaseline), clean towels, an empty squeeze bottle (like a ketchup bottle), tick-removal tweezers, a muzzle, small scissors and a disposable razor to gently remove fur. (Electric clippers are an even safer option.) To treat a small scratch or cut, fill the squeeze bottle with lukewarm water. Hold your dog securely, placing a muzzle on him to prevent bites if he gets agitated. Trim or shave away hair from the area. Gently clean the wound using the squeeze bottle of water. Pat dry. Dab the antiseptic onto the wound, then apply antibiotic ointment. Cover lightly with a bandage if possible; otherwise, prevent your dog from licking away the ointment for at least 10 minutes. Check and reapply ointment daily as it heals.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: The trend in pet owners feeding their dogs grain-free diet may have had some unintended consequences. There’s an epidemic of DCM (dilated cardiomyopathy) in dogs across the U.S., one that in many cases may be caused by a deficiency in taurine. The Food and Drug Administration and several veterinary organizations are working to increase the public’s knowledge about the problem. Please let your readers know about this issue so that they can make sure what they’re feeding their dogs contains the right nutrients to keep their dogs healthy. — Liz D., via email
We offer:
2176 Lake Rd., Hamlin 585.964.7955
DEAR LIZ: Thank you for raising awareness about this issue. As dedicated owners search for the best diets to feed their dogs, they are increasingly feeding them “exotic” diets (kangaroo meat and chickpeas, cited in a 2018 Tufts report) or buying dog foods labeled as grain-free. At issue is that some trendy diets, and unfortunately some retail dog foods, lack taurine, an ingredient in meat that is essential to maintaining a healthy heart in dogs. Taurine deficiency alone is not the only cause behind the rise in DCM, which is being seen in dog breeds where it was previously rare. Researchers are working to find additional causes of DCM, and in the meantime recommend that pet owners closely evaluate their pets’ diet. Commercial dog foods should have a good track record of nutritional quality and safety. Home-prepared diets should be supplemented with important nutrients; talk to your vet for exact details. Owners should also keep an eye on their dogs for early signs of heart disease: coughing, weakness, less ability to exercise, shortness of breath or fainting. Take a dog with these symptoms straight to the vet.

Price things reasonably It’s tempting to overprice items, but a good rule of thumb is to mark things for one-half to one-third of the original value. Be open to negotiation, but try to haggle with a “buy one get one” approach, rather than marking down the price considerably. After all, the goal is to get rid of as many items as possible, with financial gain a distant second.

Instead of giving away unwanted items that have gathered dust around the house, many people turn to garage and yard sales to transform their clutter into some extra money. Yard sales may not be a “get rich quick” scheme, but they present an environmentally friendly way to clean up a home. What’s more, they can be an ideal way to connect with neighbors and meet new people. Any money earned is an added bonus. Statistics collecting resource Statistics Brain says that roughly 165,000 yard/garage sales take place in the United States each week. Nearly 700,000 people purchase something at those sales, leading to millions of dollars exchanging hands.

Diet Is Powerful Tool to Boost Heart Health --DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a strong history of premature heart disease in my family, and I have been having some unpleasant side effects of blood pressure medicine. I decided to try a completely plant-based diet: grains, vegetables, legumes, fruit, seeds and nuts. After about a month on the new diet, my total cholesterol dropped 44 points to 159, and the other numbers went from borderline to normal, as measured by my cardiologist. My blood pressure, which was often high in the mornings (typically 150+/90), was 118/68 this morning. I’ve only lost about 5 pounds in the past couple of months, and I’m probably still 8-10 pounds overweight. I am pleased with the results, but why didn’t any of my doctors recommend this? -- J.S.B. ANSWER: Diet is a powerful tool for improving overall health, especially heart health. I believe it is underemphasized by most physicians. Changing from a meat-based diet to a mostly plant-based diet often prompts improvements in blood pressure, cholesterol and weight. Your results are better than most, but by no means unheard of. You haven’t said how you feel, but many people feel more energetic as well. Many others are able to come off of some (occasionally all) of their medications, which of course reduces side effects. Why don’t physicians recommend it? I think it’s a combination of reasons. Some doctors don’t realize how powerful the effects of dietary change can be. A good deal of patients are highly resistant to making changes, so physicians are used to their dietary advice failing. Also, taking the time to get an accurate diet history is hard, personalizing dietary advice is harder, and writing a prescription is easy. It is not necessary to have a 100% vegan diet like yours to experience a benefit. A mostly plant-based diet has substantial benefits. It’s easier for some people to make incremental changes. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I’ve been taking Viagra for several years with good results for my wife and me. Recently my prescription drug coverage administrator has begun restricting my access to 12 pills every 30 days. I’ve requested an explanation from the company without success. My prescription is written by my heart doctor, and he is not aware of any reason to restrict my access to Viagra. Is there some danger in taking Viagra (sildenafil) on a regular basis? The literature supplied with the prescription, from Pfizer, does not indicate a limit on use. I’d appreciate your feedback on this, as it will affect my wife’s and my happiness. -- J.R. ANSWER: The insurance company isn’t worried about your safety: Sildenafil (Viagra) and similar drugs are safe for daily use in most people, and your cardiologist is certainly the right person to make that determination, not your insurance company. Instead, the drug limits are there to save money for the insurance company. People can make up their own minds about whether that is reasonable or not, but it is a near-universal finding now. One way many patients get around this (if they are taking 25 mg or 50 mg) is to get the larger-size tablet and cut it in half (a pill cutter can do this well), since the limit is on the number of tablets, not the number of milligrams. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. UNDERSTANDING DEMENTIA Dementia presents itself through various symptoms, and memory loss alone is not enough to lead to a dementia diagnosis. Dementia can affect thinking and social abilities, but the Mayo Clinic notes that some dementias may be reversible. The following are some common symptoms of dementia: • Trouble communicating or finding words. • Difficulty completing complex tasks. • Challenges with planning and organization. • Episodes of confusion and disorientation. • Memory loss, which is often noticed by a third party. • Personality changes that can include agitation, anxiety, inappropriate behavior and even hallucinations. Apart from Alzheimer’s disease, which is a progressive disorder most common in people age 65 and older, there are other types of dementia. The second most common is called “vascular dementia.” This results from damage to vessels that supply blood to the brain. This damage can be the result of stroke, smoking and other blood vessel conditions. Brain imaging can often detect blood vessel problems implicated in vascular dementia. Dementia with Lewy bodies, or DLB, is another dementia that laymen may mistake for Alzheimer’s disease. The Alzheimer’s Association notes that people with DLB often have not only memory loss and cognitive problems common in Alzheimer’s, but they also display initial or early symptoms such as sleep disturbances, well-formed visual hallucinations, slowness, gait imbalance or other Parkinsonian movement features, which can lead to misdiagnosis.

WALGREENS IS THE BEST! Mary Ann is always so nice and kind at the checkout counter. She was one of the main reasons why I started going to Walgreen’s in Brockport. She is very capable when it comes to voiding items that will not be accepted on my insurance card. Not only does she do her job very well, but she is always very pleasant. From what I have experienced since shopping at Walgreens for the past 10 months, they seem to train their employees not only to do an excellent job, but also to treat their customers the way customers should be
treated. Keep up the good work! It does not go unnoticed, and it is very much appreciated, especially during these difficult times. Thank you!
MUSIC My suggestion to the person who hates neighbor playing music is to re-locate in the country where you will not have to contend with anyone and anything. Do dogs barking bother you? How about children in a neighbor’s yard? You should be ashamed of yourself for complaining about such a trivial thing. There are so many more serious issues in this world. Consider yourself blessed if the worst thing your neighbors are doing is playing music. Perhaps if you listen to some music, it will bring you much needed relief for whatever is going on in your mind.

However, the next big thing is matte finishes on faucets, appliances and even in countertops. These less flashy finishes are prized for their warmth and elegance. While some high-end models with matte finishes have been available for several years, even less expensive models are now available.

KEEP CALM & DON’T BUG OUT ABOUT THE ASIAN GIANT HORNET by Dick Rogers, principal scientist and entomologist, Bayer Bee Care Program (NAPSI) — Scientific information can ease the fears of many people concerned about the arrival of the Asian giant hornet in the United States. What do we know? Hornets are found in many parts of the world and play a vital role in the balance of natural ecosystems through pollination, biodiversity and natural pest control. Unfortunately dubbed the “murder hornet,” the Asian giant hornet (AGH), the world’s largest, was sighted for the first time in the United States in December 2019. Who (or what) is at risk? While the AGH is large in size and has a big sting compared to other hornets, it is typically not aggressive with humans (Whew! That’s a relief). As always, those allergic to bee or wasp stings should practice caution and avoid contact with hornets in general. However, the AGH can pose a risk to honey bee colonies because it feeds on large insects, including wasps and bees. So far, they’ve only appeared in the northwest part of the United States, and monitoring efforts by the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) are underway to better understand these hornets and help educate beekeepers on how to protect their colonies. On top of this, our team at Bayer is taking action by organizing a first detection trapping program in North Carolina and Missouri, which will be deployed in early July. We will then share our results with the WSDA at the end of the season. While we do not expect to catch any AGH this year, early detection is key to an effective eradication effort if needed.
Family of 1 $29,928 Family of 2 $39,144 Family of 3 $48,360 Family of 4 $57,564
752
You can be confident that the early introduction of the AGH in the United States and Canada is being closely monitored by professionals who have management plans in place should there be any future sightings. There’s no need to worry about catching a glimpse of these hornets in your yards or gardens, as they are not yet established in the United States. In fact, the only hornet that is established in our country, the European hornet, has been around since the late 1800s. How can we help protect the bees? It’s not only researchers and entomologists who can help protect honeybees. Everyone can support bees by getting outside to plant pollinator-friendly gardens or flowers. As pollinators play a vital role in our ecosystem, crop production and biodiversity, I recommend you stay calm and keep gardening to provide your fuzzy friends with the flowers and habitat they need to thrive. Learn more about how to plant pollinator-friendly gardens that help bees, monarchs and other important pollinators by visiting https://beehealth.bayer.us/home. Dick Rogers has been a professional entomologist for more than four decades and has been keeping and studying bees for over 40 years. He joined the Bayer Bee Care Program in 2009.

LAWN & LANDSCAPING THE BENEFITS OF BACKYARD KOI PONDS Koi ponds can make for beautiful additions to backyards or home gardens. While many people are drawn to koi ponds because of their aesthetic appeal, there are many additional reasons for homeowners to consider installing koi ponds in their backyards. Ponds and water gardens can transform yards rather quickly. Ponds can add appeal to otherwise mundane yards and provide eye-catching, relaxing spots to sit and enjoy the scenery. Koi ponds have recently fallen into a favor with homeowners in North America, but these popular water features date back several centuries to Asia. Centuries ago, Chinese rice farmers began keeping carp in their rice paddies, and that practice eventually caught on in Japan. The fish started to breed and form slight color variations. Koi, often referred to as “Nishikigoi,” are actually descendants of the common carp, though the koi of today are more brightly hued and ornamental fish than carp. Koi can become a lowmaintenance family pet. These fish tend to grow accustomed to having people around, and will often interact with visitors at the surface of the water. It’s not unusual to have koi beg for food or take food from a person’s hand. They also may tolerate some light handling. Koi ponds also provide some psychological benefits. The sound of the water can be soothing and relaxing. Sitting by the pond may help alleviate stress, as unwinding next to a pond and watching the fish swim by can help individuals decompress.

Gardeners Would you kindly tell me why my hydrangeas will not bloom? I have a blue one - it had two flowers this year. I did give them the proper food to turn them blue - and they were blue. I also have a pink and red one. They have not bloomed in a number of years. I do leave the wood until the following spring. I do not trim them back in the fall. My oak leaf hydrangeas bloom beautifully. Any suggestions? They are in the front of the house and face west. Thank you! - Lisa D.
from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County
Your problem with a non-blooming macrophyla (big leaf) hydrangea is common. This plant has hardy roots, but the buds are not very hardy. They get frozen during the winter or are sometimes munched off by deer. Fluctuating temperatures during the winter have made this problem worse. Sometimes, these plants bloom for the first few years then the blooms diminish. You can try surrounding it with a wire cage, then filling it with mulched fall leaves to provide more winter protection. The website Hy-
drangeasintheNorth.com illustrates group. Your Oakleaf hydrangea is a different method of pruning which from another hardy group: Hydrangea may increase your blooms. You may Quercifolia. consider replacing it with a more reliable bloomer, including one from the Hydrangea Arborescens group, or a macrophyla bred to include some of the hardy genetics of the Serrata

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * The first webcam was created to check a coffeepot! In 1993, researchers in the University of Cambridge’s computer science department really didn’t like getting up from their chairs to check the coffeepot just to find it empty, so they wired a system that would stream three images per minute from the Trojan Room, where the pot was kept, to the internal computer network. By the end of that year, the stream made it onto the new World Wide Web, endowing the Trojan Room coffeepot with international, if brief, fame. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

SHOPPERS SAVE BIG ON GROCERIES WITH HEALTHY SAVINGS® POWERED BY AARP FOUNDATION
Gates Historical Society September program - PROGRAM CHANGE - The September program of the Gates Historical Society will take place on Monday, September 21, 7pm in the Gates Town Hall Annex, 1605 Buffalo Road. Gary Newman will be presenting a program entitled “The French and Indian War In New York State”. Gary will come in uniform and bring some items for Show and Tell and will tell us how battles were fought, massed troops vs. frontier style as well as other little known facts about this war. There is no admission fee but masks and social distancing are required. This facility is handicapped accessible.
Catch a vista of maples in that long light and you see Autumn glowing through the leaves.... The promise of gold and crimson is there among the branches, though as yet it is achieved on only a stray branch, an impatient limb or an occasional small tree which has not yet learned to time its changes. ~Hal Borland
(NAPSI) — Good nutrition is important at any age. But for older adults on a tight budget, regular access to nutritious foods can be limited—and expensive. A new program aims to change that by making it easier to get healthy foods at the local grocery store for an affordable price. With Healthy Savings® powered by AARP Foundation, shoppers pay a small fee of $4.99 per calendar year for a card that can save them up to $200 a month on groceries. The program is part of AARP Foundation’s work to help people over 50 with limited income eat more nutritious foods, ultimately improving their well-being. Research shows that more than 10 million older adults don’t get enough nutritious food on a daily basis, most often because they can’t afford it. Eating healthy is about more than affordability, however. Not only does Healthy Savings reduce costs, it also identifies healthy options in the store. All products available through Healthy Savings are scored against the USDA’s Healthy Eating Index to make sure they qualify as nutritious. The index makes it convenient to choose the healthiest foods, which include lean meats, eggs, yogurt, whole grains, and a wide range of other options. The typical over-50 diet scores low in key food groups like whole grains and dairy. By encouraging the purchase of more of these nutrients through coupon discounts, Healthy Savings can help older adults: • Lose weight or maintain a healthy weight. • Reduce the risk of developing chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease. • More easily manage a chronic disease. • Increase or maintain energy levels. Shoppers who sign up for Healthy Savings receive a card in the mail and can download a mobile app, both of which can be used at 22,000 grocery stores across the U.S. for instant savings at checkout. The savings come on top of any from store loyalty cards and manufacturers’ coupons (so long as coupons don’t add up to more than the price of the item). Each week, new coupons are automatically loaded onto the card and app—no coupon clipping required. Over the course of a year, Healthy Savings can save shoppers as much as $2,400. More information, including recipes and tips for shopping smart, is at aarpfoundation.org/save.

Just Kings Strengthens
and Inspires Batavia Community
BY AMANDA DUDEK
I
t started as a peaceful march for equality on June 7th. However, it quickly grew into something more: a group which is deeply enriching the City of Batavia and beyond. Beginning with ten men of color, Just Kings was established to better the Batavia community. The origin of their group name is inspiring. “We sat down and pondered what to call ourselves,” said Haven Armstrong, brother to one of the men who organized the march. “We chose Just for behaving according to what is good and right, or ‘just.’ ‘Kings’ is a term of high respect among black males.” Members began interacting with the community in many ways. “We get involved in pretty much everything from coaching kids to addressing community tensions to helping people addicted to drugs or alcohol,” stated Armstrong. They also held an event to help children have the things they needed for going back to school. “We held it in Austin Park rather than any particular neighborhood because we do not want to embarrass or offend anyone. My brother, owner of Royals, came out and gave haircuts to those in need, as well. Color, sex, religion, politics, or anything else didn’t matter. We just wanted to support these kids.” The group is quickly finding its footing. They have a community to reach, and they are connecting with other places to help out. They are also in the process of becoming a nonprofit. “We haven’t narrowed down exactly what we will focus on yet,” explained Armstrong. “Many people are reaching out to us such as Mayors and the Chief of Police, so we are helping around the city.” Recently, Just Kings chose Victor Thomas, who also organized their initial march, to be the group’s spokesperson and sit on the Police Reform Committee for Batavia. “We have all been subject to the system in one way or another, and while it is a bit better now, there is obviously a lot worldwide that needs to be reformed,” Armstrong explained, adding that Just Kings has had a lot of interaction and cooperation with the Batavia Police. “Growing up, we only saw the police for bad things,” he recalled, encouraging officers to be in their communities often, get to know the people, and help out. Batavia resident Sharena Majors believes the Batavia community is so fortunate to experience Just Kings’ involvement. “From the start, one of Just Kings’ missions has always been to stand up for the black community,” she said. “The Kings continually work towards educating our youth, members of our community, and members of neighboring communities as they mentor and set positive examples. It is amazing to see an organization of well-respected black men who are great fathers, brothers, and friends from our very own community. They are passionate, dedicated, strong and have such big hearts.” In keeping with their leadership mindset, Just Kings held the historic, first Juneteenth event ever to take place in Batavia, drawing congressmen, city officials and others to participate. “We saw that the knowledge we had gained over the years wasn’t being spread through the Black community,” said Armstrong. “It wasn’t until nearly 100 years after the first 4th of July celebration that we were actually free. So, we made up pamphlets about what it was and why we should celebrate it both in the African Community and the country as a whole. For our culture not to know what Juneteenth was – that was upsetting to us.” Educating and supporting area youth are of key importance. “In Batavia, there is little constructive to do,” shared Armstrong, a self-described ‘troubled kid’ who credits the army for saving him. “People lack education. I have a GED, and I do nothing but read and educate myself and my children. I like to have

conversations with anyone about anything at any time. Knowledge is a constant progression.” For Armstrong, education is largely self-education. “We see how our history is often portrayed in our schools,” he said. “My son came home and told us about our history starting with slavery, but our culture existed long before that. We have to educate young black students on what our culture actually was. Educating my children uplifts them and gives them a perspective on what had been accomplished so they can hold their heads up high.” Just Kings hopes to combine education with understanding. “We are not looking for apologies nor for people to be overly sympathetic, rather just an acknowledgement of what happened and what the system has been – and empathy,” said Armstrong. “Put yourself in our shoes and realize we need total reforms. Embrace what we are doing right now.” Violence, however, is unacceptable. “We should not be so vicious that we justify why people are being killed,” Armstrong explained. “The fact that a person was killed should make you feel some type of way, and if we have gotten to the point where we can justify that, that’s not okay. At the same time, while we do not want confrontation, we are not shy to expose or call out wrongdoing on the spot.” This bold, positive leadership inspires Majors. “It’s amazing to see them actively turn the wheel of change and bring about a new level of positivity and understanding,” she said. “The Kings always strive to bring our community together while providing knowledge and awareness and caring for our kids. That is huge because our children are the future. Just Kings plans to continue to bring positivity, knowledge, love, opportunity, and change to our community and the surrounding area.”

www.landltransmissions.com SAFETY IN NUMBERS: WHY IT PAYS TO REPLACE HEADLIGHT BULBS IN PAIRS Why replace aging headlight bulbs? Few drivers include headlight bulb replacement in their vehicle maintenance routines. But old headlight bulbs can drastically compromise visibility at night, when drivers’ visual acuity is naturally reduced by as much as 70 percent. As headlight bulbs age, the effects of exposure to sunlight, ozone and pollution can significantly reduce their light output. According to Philips Automotive, a leading manufacturer of vehicle lighting components, headlight bulbs begin to project significantly less light within two to three years of their initial usage, producing dimmer light outputs that compromise the safety of drivers and their passengers. For example, new headlight bulbs capable of projecting 240-foot beams in front of a vehicle may see that projection dwindle to just 160 feet within two to three years.

Mr. Glass Fax Resume to 271-1279 or Email: alex@mrglassfix.com THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB Salary: Of course everyone would love to earn more money when changing jobs, but there is more to changing jobs than just improving your bottom line. As you begin your job search, consider how much you currently earn and if that allows you to live a life you love. If so, don’t overemphasize finding a new job that pays considerably more than your currently earn. On the flip side, young professionals who want to start a family in the years ahead should consider the costs associated with such a decision and how the salaries they earn at their next jobs may affect what they want down the road.
HOW TO NEGOTIATE (AND GET) A SALARY INCREASE Don’t share why you want the raise. When discussing a potential raise, keep it about business and avoid personal reasons. You’re more likely to get the raise if you keep personal reasons (i.e. bills piling up, school expenses, family vacations) out of the mix. Maintain your professionalism during the discussion. Otherwise, you may risk losing your boss’s respect.

By JoAnn Derson * Cooking a recipe with garlic and onions to start? Invite me to dinner! But first, remember to let the onions cook to nearly translucent before adding the garlic, which cooks much faster. If you put both in at the same time, the garlic will burn before the onions have a chance to deepen their flavor. * Automatic toilets are great for not having to touch the handles, but they can be scary for kids -- and some adults too, if I’m being honest. Try putting a sticky note over the sensor so that it will not flush until you take it off, giving you some control.

NOW HERE'S A TIP
* “For chores, I write tasks on sticky notes and put them up on our family board. The kids choose the things they want to do, and when they are done to my satisfaction I sign their ticket. At the end of the week, they can bring me the tickets to pay out. This is for extra money, so they don’t have to do it; I don’t have to chase them, and I don’t have to keep track of it either.” -- E.L. in Montana * Every so often, use a very diluted bleach solution to rinse out your reusable water bottles. Put them on a bottle rack to air dry completely before sealing them back up. * “I use the same grip tape that my son uses for his baseball bat on my hand tools, like my hammer and pry bar. I also have used it on my lawn tools. It makes a nice barrier that stays put.” -- C.R. in South Carolina * Things you should wash with soap and water more often than you think: hairbrushes, eyeglasses (and sunglasses) and keychains. Think about how often they get handled and how infrequently they get cleaned.

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A TEAM PLAYER The ability to communicate, interact and work collectively with others is both a professional and personal asset. But in certain ways, the reliance on technology has made working as a team more complicated. People have grown accustomed to spending large quantities of time alone working at computers or on phones and tablets, potentially compromising their ability to work directly with others when the need arises. According to Monster.com, when it comes to choosing a candidate for a new job or promotion, employers consistently say they want a team player. That means it’s advantageous for professionals looking to further their careers to brush up on their team-building and social skills.
